Development Watch: 575 5th Avenue Coming Along

All the construction netting on the Fifth Avenue Committee's supportive housing project on 5th Avenue and 16th street has come down, and it's now possible to see progress on the corner of the structure. The rendering above shows how it's supposed to turn out.

omf! crackheads get balconies now?!
just kidding, this is a good thing. i think they should leave the cornered balconies open space and now window it.. having an open space balcony would actually be psychologically beneficial for people in supportive housing, versus having to look out thru thick paned glass reminiscent of hospitals, jails, and rehabs.

They are doing good and steady work over there. The building actually looks nicer in person than what the photos and the rendering show (not that the photo or rendering are bad in any way.) Some folks still miss the parking lot that was there, but I rarely saw more than 3 or 4 cars in it at any given time. And the ones I did see belonged to the folks who were employed as delivery drivers for the Dominos across the street.

I miss the police station that was there. They housed people who needed rehab, a full circle in 30 years,

Grumpy, do you remember what precinct that was?
Posted by: altervoce at November 20, 2009 3:42 PM
I think it was the 72. Yes, confirmed with family members who were guests, the 72 it was.

that is so ugly. could they try a little harder?
Posted by: flatbushed at November 20, 2009 4:08 PM
no., they cant try a little harder. what money do you think gets this built? sorry but i'd rather see this built with my tax payer money than something beautiful like the taj mahal built with with diamonds encrusted if it means it will be cheaper and service a part of our world that needs help?

I saw the 575 Project in person...not so bad. The Fifth Avenue Committee claims the 575 Project will be marketing to seniors, youth aging out of foster, and Brooklyn CB 7...I still wouldn't mind obtaining one of those affordable studio apartments for myself. But it seems so impossible; has anyone been interview yet?
Best of luck to those lucky candidates.

Hello, I was wondering what effect you think this will have on the neighborhood? I know South Slope has been growing in new construction and housing prices. What do you think will be the effect on the surrounding blocks, safety wise and pricing wise.

Anyone notice how architectural renderings always look better than the real things? But at least they are trying here with the decorative brickwork.

Imagine this was a commercial condo development on 4th ave. This is no better nor worse than the rest.
