Co-op of the Day: 160 Henry Street, #1B

160-Henry-1B-1109.jpg
While this ground-floor co-op at 160 Henry Street is a far cry (both in terms of price and vertical feet) from its more famous upstairs neighbor, it's still an attractive apartment in a great Brooklyn Heights location. It's also a decent-sized one-bedroom with a reasonable maintenance, given that this is one of the premier doorman buildings in The Heights. What do you make of the $509,000 asking price.

If possible, I'd ditch that wall between the dining room and the kitchen (and that ridiculous door) and make it one large eat in kitchen. As it stands now, the refrigerator is in the hallway. Ick.

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at November 23, 2009 12:49 PM

Great empty nest or DINK apartment. Don't know the building, but would guess it will go within 10% of ask.

Posted by: Brokedeveloper at November 23, 2009 12:51 PM

Thought you said you were going to keep their address private, Mr. B?

You need the clicks that bad on today's COTD?

Posted by: 11217 at November 23, 2009 12:51 PM

Oh, didn't notice the refrigerator thing. At least it's kind of in a nook. Still looks like nice airy comfortable place to me. I don't care for first floor, but, of course, that's good for many people. Price and maintenance seem reasonable for BH.

Posted by: Nomi at November 23, 2009 1:02 PM

"Thought you said you were going to keep their address private, Mr. B?"

11217, I'm confused. Maybe I'm just missing it, but where is there any mention of who bought the upstairs apartment in this story or the one on the link?

Posted by: Biff Champion at November 23, 2009 1:03 PM

Biff...

The part about the "famous upstairs neighbor..."

He specifically said in another post he wasn't going to publish their address, but then puts a very nice little hint in there today so that anyone who has heard anything about this, certainly knows what/who he's referencing...

Whatever...I don't care. I'm just in a bad mood today. Sorry.

Posted by: 11217 at November 23, 2009 1:06 PM

Perfectly nice. Seems like good light considering it's the ground floor. Only thing I don't like are the green kitchen counters - are those granite or faux granite Formica? Snappy, the front of that dining room also double as a foyer and a hallway for the rest of the apartment. I agree with BD that it goes for within 10% of ask. Hey, 11217.

Posted by: CarrollGardened at November 23, 2009 1:07 PM

"The part about the "famous upstairs neighbor...""

While it's true that I'd prefer know one knew I'd bought the Penthouse, it was bound to get out eventually. There, now you all know.

Posted by: CarrollGardened at November 23, 2009 1:09 PM

I thought it sounded as though he were personifying the apartment, not outing its buyers. Which you actually just did, 11217. Go get yourself something sweet to nibble, and a cup of coffee. You'll feel better almost instantly :)

Posted by: Nokilissa at November 23, 2009 1:10 PM

Foyer schmoyer! I want a real kitchen that can fit more than one person and doesn't have the fridge in the hallway. Down with that wall!

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at November 23, 2009 1:13 PM

Thanks Nokilissa...You might be right about that, but clearly since those of us who read this blog know the story, that little morsel didn't have to do with the "famous apartment" on its own.

Going into kitchen now to scavenge. :)

Sorry, I won't shit on this very lovely apartment thread any longer. It looks great, and price looks good too.

Posted by: 11217 at November 23, 2009 1:14 PM

Oh, and I would probably preserve what I could from the kitchen, but demolish it and move it to what is now the dining room. I would open up that wall btwn living room and current dining room, and turn the existing kitchen into a second bedroom.

Posted by: Nokilissa at November 23, 2009 1:15 PM

i dont do 1st floor apartments

Posted by: aj at November 23, 2009 1:18 PM

11217, thanks for clarifying. As everyone knows, I read this blog pretty darn regularly and still didn't consider the above prose an "outing" but I'm likely much more oblivious than the average person. I'm sure Mrs C. would wholeheartedly agree with that, anyway.

Posted by: Biff Champion at November 23, 2009 1:20 PM

aj, I used to say the same thing . . . until I lived on the Garden and Parlor floors of my Brownstone. I think it would be perfectly nice overlooking the rear garden here, assuming the listing is accurate.

::taps into psychic part of brain::

it's Jessica Tandy's apt isnt it?

*rob*

Posted by: Butterfly at November 23, 2009 1:21 PM

Yeah, I thought he was talking about the penthouse apt itself too. Now I'll have to storm that place and find out who exactly is in it and it'll be your fault, 11217. Will you visit me while I'm incarcerated?

Posted by: Nomi at November 23, 2009 1:23 PM

Rob, that's way too sophisticated for you . ..

Posted by: Nomi at November 23, 2009 1:24 PM

"I read this blog pretty darn regularly"

QOTD. RAOTFLMMFAO to your entire 1:20 post, Biff.

Posted by: CarrollGardened at November 23, 2009 1:39 PM

The reference was lost on me, and I've been scientifically tested as being in the 99th percentile of obliviousness.

Posted by: infinitejester at November 23, 2009 1:40 PM

Ok ok fine. I guess I'm the only one who pays attention around here. ;)

And I'm sensitive to this one in particular, since I was the one who tipped Brownstoner off, and asked that the address remain private.

Sorry again.

Posted by: 11217 at November 23, 2009 1:45 PM

"::taps into psychic part of brain::"

Psychic *rob*, I'm waiting for my reading!! I hear you've become legendary.

Posted by: CarrollGardened at November 23, 2009 1:46 PM

"I guess I'm the only one who pays attention around here"

11217, I also got it as soon as I read it, but I think you'd really have to read the blog regularly to make the connection.

Posted by: CarrollGardened at November 23, 2009 1:49 PM

O.K. Now that it's been outed, who is it?

Posted by: Arkady at November 23, 2009 1:49 PM

give me a break. so you fed the blog a "blind item" then completely absolve yourself of any responsibility now that it's common knowledge and been reported widely on this and other websites? wtf. i remember things well, and i remember that you're the one who started the whole shitstorm. i'm pretty sure much as people like either of the two individuals, that most people could not give a rat's ass where they live and weren't dropping little anonymous tidbits to blogs about them.

Posted by: CG_ups at November 23, 2009 1:53 PM

I had no idea...I thought he was simply speaking of the grandeur of the other linked apartment (size, etc.). It wasn't until you mentioned it that I knew what you were talking about!

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at November 23, 2009 1:53 PM

if you have respect for someone's privacy but absolutely need to share it, then talk about it with your friends at a coffeeshop, don't send a blind item to a blog.

Posted by: CG_ups at November 23, 2009 1:56 PM

"that most people could not give a rat's ass where they live and weren't dropping little anonymous tidbits to blogs about them."

Actually, I brought it up casually in a post about BH and people started guessing, and I said I wouldn't say who it was. It was supposed to be fun.

Then Mr. B emailed ME to take his guess and was correct and I told him to please do some research first before posting it and because of the circumstances, I didn't want to mention how I knew or the address.

You sound like a fun one, CG ups.

Posted by: 11217 at November 23, 2009 1:57 PM

And since I do love Brownstoner, and something like this would eventually leak out anyway (perhaps not the exact address but the move itself to the neighborhood) then why shouldn't I want the blog I read most and care about to get the scoop on it first knowing that everyone and their mother will pick it up later?

I don't understand your beef.

Without tips to Brownstoner, this blog would not have nearly the content it does. You do realize that, correct? Lots of the stuff you see here and post about are from tips sent in from readers.

Posted by: 11217 at November 23, 2009 2:00 PM

please, i'm not the one who is a desparate little attention whore.

Posted by: CG_ups at November 23, 2009 2:00 PM

"please, i'm not the one who is a desparate little attention whore."

Do you realize how stupid you sound? I'm an anonymous person who has met no one on this blog with the name 11217, and Mr. B wrote ME about this after I casually mentioned it and then proceeded to use the news on a handful of posts.

How exactly am I getting attention for this?

You sound like a real D&CK!

I was just trying to protect the privacy of someone yet still mention something which might be interesting to some folks and seemed like fun neighborhood gossip.

Posted by: 11217 at November 23, 2009 2:05 PM

my beef is that you are whining about Mr. B making a oblique reference to the famous occupants of this building when you're the one who started this whole thing becoming public. you are the first one to mention it somewhere publicly, from that very thread, it was picked up on curbed and the brooklyn heights blog. i'm saying that you are a hypocrite for snarking on this site/Mr. B for the same thing you did. yes people were going to guess, and it may have been amusing, but obviously people were going to find out. nobody has any privacy in the age on the internet. so if you really respect their privacy, then my point is that you don't brag about knowing a secret about celebrities on a website because people will find out. you played a part in it. that is my point.

Posted by: CG_ups at November 23, 2009 2:05 PM

Well, sure is beautiful weather today.
To get back to our salad *Martha Stewart reference* this is a lovely looking apartment, but a bit pricy for a 1 bedroom.

Posted by: Maly at November 23, 2009 2:07 PM

And clearly you missed this part of my earlier post, CG ups...

"Whatever...I don't care. I'm just in a bad mood today. Sorry."

But continue with your rant about me. Looks fun.

Posted by: 11217 at November 23, 2009 2:10 PM

Think it would be possible to put a second door on that bathroom (from the hallway) so as to avoid people traipsing through the bedroom to get there?

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at November 23, 2009 2:12 PM

I like the apartment - agree with Maly re price.

Also agree with CG_Ups that most people won't much care that the famous folks live here.
(Actually had never heard of one of them, and the other one can defend themself pretty well!).

Posted by: etson at November 23, 2009 2:13 PM

so who is it?

does their name rhyme with *HORK* ??

Posted by: dirty_hipster at November 23, 2009 2:14 PM

I still have no clue who lives there.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at November 23, 2009 2:15 PM

"and the other one can defend themself pretty well!".

Posted by: etson at November 23, 2009 2:13 PM

Etson, that was pretty funny.

I can see making this into a 2 bedroom with a kitchen/living room combo. Just would need to break one wall and move the kitchen. Will be a bit of a price tag associated with that move but will make a more decent apartment IMO.

Posted by: Kensingtonian at November 23, 2009 2:17 PM

DH, yup and their significant other lol.

Posted by: Kensingtonian at November 23, 2009 2:18 PM

50% down hurts it, but otherwise I could like it. Perfect for downsizers, as broker says. This board is not for the faint of heart (or wallet).

Posted by: Ringo at November 23, 2009 2:19 PM

Nor would you care, Dave. Truly. This has been blown entirely out of proportion and I thought it was over till CG ups got her panties in a bunch and started attacking me for being an attention whore for attempting to protect someone's privacy. Silly me.

Anyway...we should get back on topic. This is one of the nicer 1 bedrooms listed here lately, and I do apologize for being overly sensitive to the "famous neighbor" issue. No one cares, I get it.

Posted by: 11217 at November 23, 2009 2:19 PM

Sorry, been out setting up for Gifted and just getting caught up...actually, Noklissa had it right: We were just referring to the fact that the penthouse was a high-profile, expensive listing, but given the eventual buyer we suppose it was a poor choice of words...
