Closing Bell: Yellow Hook?

yellow-hook-1109.jpg
Pardon Me For Asking dug up this old map of the Brooklyn waterfront. Of particular interest to us was the existence of an area called Yellow Hook to the south of what was, and is still, known as Red Hook.

Wasnt Bay Ridge known as Yellow Hook? and not Sunset Park.

Posted by: guikazoid at November 17, 2009 4:07 PM

It's actually Bay Ridge that was called Yellow Hook, I think for the yellow clay ground. The name was changed in the 1800's because of fears that people would associate the area with Yellow Fever.

There is still a bar in Bay Ridge called Yellow Hook.

Holy right on, Batman!

Posted by: Expert Textpert at November 17, 2009 4:12 PM

What Batman said. "Hook" was an Anglicization of the Dutch term for point of land - cf. Corlears, Sandy, et al.

Incidentally, the food at Yellow Hook Grill in Bay Ridge really sucks. Would enjoy seeing more Bay Ridge ROTD's so that we can review them...... please, Mr. B?

Posted by: bowl of dicks at November 17, 2009 4:26 PM

The confusion between Bay Ridge and Sunset Park may have come from the entire area once being called Bay Ridge.

Posted by: bestviewinbrooklyn at November 17, 2009 4:29 PM

Given time, one neighborhood may yet swallow the other in a demonstration of real estate Darwinism.

Posted by: DitmasSnark at November 17, 2009 5:11 PM

I second BOD's request to see more Bay Ridge ROTDs. There are plenty of great restaurants in this nabe, and they should be discussed here.

Posted by: imfromhere at November 17, 2009 5:16 PM

Oh and, yes, Yellowhook is Bay Ridge.

Posted by: imfromhere at November 17, 2009 5:20 PM

And the first resturaunt to be reviewed should be Piatti on 4th ave and 99th. It might be the best place I've eaten in Bay Ridge so far. And the gelato is probably the best I've had in the states.

Then Petit Oven. Those are my two recs. I could go on but diner is burning on the stove.

And I agree. Yellow Hook food sucks.

Posted by: italiana71 at November 17, 2009 5:51 PM

Oh and don't forget Yellow Hook Homes. There was a story about a couple who recently purchased one of these homes in the NYT The Hunt features about three weeks ago. They are on 74th st.

Posted by: italiana71 at November 17, 2009 5:55 PM

BOD -- Have you seen that article? Do you know that couple?

Posted by: imfromhere at November 17, 2009 6:16 PM

imfromhere - ?????????

Posted by: bowl of dicks at November 17, 2009 6:22 PM

I think you mean me infromehere. I don't know the couple I just remember the article from three weeks ago or so. I would link it but Brownstoner does not allow links anymore. Simply go back a few weeks to the real estate section of the times. Its a weekly feature called "The Hunt" or maybe it was "Habitats" One of the two.

I just ate at Yellow Hook last Friday and acually thought the food was great. We just got bar food, nothing special, but thought it was delish. Just my opinion.

Posted by: Streetwise123 at November 17, 2009 7:59 PM

First and last time I ate at Yellow Hook, my friend ordered a hamburger with blue cheese on it; and it was delivered with blue cheese salad dressing on it. NO BUENO!

Posted by: bowl of dicks at November 17, 2009 9:03 PM

Brooklyn, the land of hookers.

Posted by: Minard Lafever at November 17, 2009 9:20 PM

Italiana, is the gelato from that guy in Bensonhurst who's supposed to be like a gelato genius?

Posted by: HmmWhichNeighborhood at November 17, 2009 9:20 PM

Heartily agree with the recommendations made above for Petit Oven (on Bay Ridge Ave) and Piattini, both wonderful.

Posted by: mictat at November 17, 2009 11:51 PM

Oh, Italiana, what about Tanoreen, the um is it Turkish restaurant, in Bay Ridge? That is one of the best New York restaurants. I'd been meaning to try it for years, and finally went for lunch after ordering linoleum, of all things. Was very good. Definitely worth a trip. I might have noticed they don't have alcohol, though, not sure. That's a drawback.

Posted by: mopar at November 18, 2009 12:00 AM

tanoreen is already in the ROTD. Along with only 2 others, one of which isn't even open anymore (ChipShop).

Come on Mr. B, start listing some Ridge restaurants!

Posted by: bowl of dicks at November 18, 2009 6:29 AM

Hey guys -- I handle the daily restaurant reviews and I welcome your suggestions! Any recommendations besides Piattini and Petit Oven?

Thanks! As soon as I get down to Bay Ridge and snap some storefront photos, you'll start seeing these as ROTDs.

Posted by: Kara at November 18, 2009 8:30 AM

Yes the Gelato is made by the very same guy. And he has a bar set up in the front so you can go and just eat gelato. And the best part? Its still BYO!!!

Posted by: italiana71 at November 18, 2009 8:51 AM

Don't forget to visit Grand Sechzuan, which received nods from Village Voice (years best) and The New York Times this past year.

Posted by: italiana71 at November 18, 2009 8:54 AM

Screw this historical crap. There's too much of it on this blog.

Some really good choices here for restaurants in Bay Ridge!

I haven't tried Grand Sichuan, but I will now. Thanks Italiana.
And my mouth is watering for a slice of Nino's Grandma right NOW!

Posted by: Expert Textpert at November 18, 2009 9:13 AM

Definitely there should be more ROTD's in Bay Ridge. Featuring Mr. Wonton baffles me when there are so many real restaurants not mere chinese takeout in Bay Ridge and elsewhere. It's like the site is making the statement every restaurant in Park Slope is worth serious consideration. When not really. We really like Areo in Bay Ridge. The food is great and we enjoy watching the older, wealthy Italian men to whom the waiters speak Italian and pay a great deal of respect. I'll let you speculate who and what they are. I would also suggest more ROTD's in Williamsburg. Every restaurant we try there is really good and often have unique concepts.

Posted by: traditionalmod at November 18, 2009 9:34 AM

Mmm, Williamsburg restaurants. I think Williamsburg has a great restaurant scene. I would much rather eat there than in Manhattan. Traditionalmod, what are your favorites?

Posted by: mopar at November 18, 2009 10:19 AM

We haven't even made a dent in checking out the restaurants in Williamsburg but loved every place we've tried, nothing's been bad. So far we've gone to Pies n Thighs, Fada, Sweetwater, Marlow and Sons, Rye, Zenkichi. Also, we haven't been able to figure out which restaurant we stumbled onto years ago there with some friends but it was the first Williamsburg restaurant we tried and it was amazing. I remember it was in a more isolated area and I think in its own older building. Large covered outdoor seating area. Expensive. Anybody know what it might be?

Posted by: traditionalmod at November 18, 2009 12:37 PM

Why is the stereotyping of Americans of Italian descent still acceptable?

Posted by: the Magnificent Arturo Bandini at November 18, 2009 1:25 PM

Oh and an important one: Turqua Grill.

Posted by: italiana71 at November 18, 2009 5:14 PM

Thanks, Traditionalmod. Someof those places we havnt tried yet. Re the first one you tried, sounds like Dumont. The prices have gone up and the chef is now at Rye, so sadly it's not as incredible as it used to be.
