Jonathan,
I wish your team could avoid linking to the Fort Greene NY Times blog's crime entry just because it's there and it's easy. Doesn't the Brooklyn Paper have a crime blotter that covers all neighborhoods?
In other news, it's a lousy, rainy day. A NYC bad hair day!

And the crime blog is on a Fort Greene - Clinton Hill blog, so kinda interesting that Clinton Hill was omitted...granted I didn't review each crime to see which hood it fell in.

Just a suggestion for the blogwrap later:

"10/25: Woman, 53, said she left a wallet on the counter of a McDonald’s on the Flatbush Avenue extension when she went outside to see if a bus was coming. When she came back inside, she said the wallet, with $640 inside it, was gone."
Shouldn't this lady be awarded some sort of prize?

What is it about reporting crime in Ft Greene that so incenses so many Brownies? I don't understand it. If it is happening, and it appears that no one is making it up or lying, why not provide this information so people can take extra measures to prevent becoming a target or having their home broken into?
On a different note, did anyone else find it annoying and odd to the point of wackiness, the word/verb choices used in this article? "Swatted" (as in "she was SWATTED in the head with a statue); "clobbered"; "whacked"; "pummeled" and so on. I began to feel as though I was watching Road Runner and Friends or something equally silly. Perhaps 'beaten', 'clubbed', 'smashed' and so on would better convey the violent, vicious and criminal nature of these crimes that sent many to area hospitals. Just sayin'.

BrooklynGreene, Holy moley!
I am seriously loving those cut-out pieces of art. They would make a phenomenal gift for someone deeply loved (given they aren't exactly inexpensive!)
Thanks for that.

Sorry if this has been discussed before, but I've got a question. RE: the city buying failed/stalled condo developments and converting them into affordable housing - How is this supposed to be worked out? Is it being proposed that the city pay these developers their current asking price for the condos that are finished and not selling and then the city sells them to folks at a discounted rate? If so, is there any concern about the city essentially losing money here? (I know, I know, affordable housing is important and money isn't always the primary focus, but everything is a business.) Or, is the city to buy these finished units at a (relatively) deep discount and then sell them off as affordable units? If the latter is the case, what about that 'price floor' I've heard some of you talking about (what the banks will allow the developer to sell for)? With regard to the stalled developments that remain unfinished, is the proposal for the city to step in and make a loan for the $$$ necessary to complete the projects and then as a condition of the loan make the developers sell all or some of the units as affordable? If so, where is the city to get this $$$? Selling bonds?
(To anyone who is kind enough to answer my questions, I beg of you to do so in *plain* English and not technical terms...I am so not a finance/numbers person. If I were a man I'd have to get naked to count to 21!)

I want one of those cut-outs!!! But not for 550 bones :-(

Took the F shuttle bus this past weekend and it was tons better than the train actually. There were shuttles almost every 5 minutes throughout the day. I think I will kind of miss the shuttle.

Paris Cutout is only $250.
Why not a lot "of love" for that "city"?

someone bought the cutouts yesterday

CG_ups, I also did the F Train Shuttle with the Champs a couple of times in the last week and it was great each time. You even get a free ride if you only need to go between Jay Street and Church Ave.
Posted by: Biff Champion at October 28, 2009 9:14 AM
As far as getting a seat and having polite fellow passengers the F train is the best train I've used. It was never fast but that's why you can get a seat! I usually choose to stay on and snooze in my seat rather than catch the faster and very crowded A train @ Jay street.
Posted by: Joe from Brooklyn at October 28, 2009 9:20 AM
I did find the shuttle both pleasant and scenic the first weekend. I noticed You can see the houses on 9th street better when you're viewing from the height of a bus rather than a car. the following weekend I wa ssick of it already.
Posted by: Joe from Brooklyn at October 28, 2009 9:23 AM
so it is you that falls asleep across 3 seats and makes me stand!
Posted by: Petebklyn at October 28, 2009 9:26 AM
Pete, do what I do and shove his @ss over and take a seat :) Sorry if I bruised you Joe :-)

You must not be on the F during rush hour. After 7:40am it is packed! And coming home too. And usually it's one of the older, dirtier trains, not like the new J/M/Z or 4/5/6 trains. That said though, people are pretty mellow on the F relative to other trains. I literally never get a seat though unless it's late at night, though admittedly the A/C at is much more crowded. The boro hall transfer is like a scene from a japanese subway cartoon mashup. Oof!

Think about how sick and upset that lady was with herself after coming back and noticing the wallet was stolen. I know I'd be.
Oh, and ditto on Nokilissa's point. Just b/c you're protective of Fort Greene doesn't mean crime doesn't happen there.
Posted by: tiptoe at October 28, 2009 10:15 AM
Why is it called 'theft' when you walk away from your wallet like that? I call it 'giving it away.' No one deserves to lose money like that, but come on people. Common sense!
Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at October 28, 2009 10:35 AM
Snappy - its still theft - no-one writing here would take it would we?
But she still should get an award for stupidity going above and beyond the call of duty.
Posted by: dittoburg at October 28, 2009 10:38 AM
I know it's still technically theft, but damn...I wouldn't walk away from $5 let alone $640. Darwin award perhaps?
Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at October 28, 2009 10:50 AM
So snappy- can I tell you which cut-out I want for Xmas- seein' as I convinced MM to give you her MOST FAVORITE and PRECIOUS cat you now have??? :)
Posted by: bxgrl at October 28, 2009 10:50 AM
Sorry Bxgirl...the cut out has been sold! If only I had gotten to it first, you would have been quite happy this holiday season! :)

She probably just cashed a check and was carrying it with her for the rent due this weekend. Lots of people don't have checking accounts, I've learned.

ha. good point. i actually do the same, i cash my check at the bank normally but if it's closed i cash it at a check cashing place, since i pay my rent in cash. not sure why i pay my rent and bills and cash, but i always have and it feels right. well in any case, i wish i had her rent

I'll never forget, about 18 years ago when I had just moved here from the Midwest, I did something similarly stupid. I worked for a State Senator at the time and had community meetings in Harlem fairly frequently. One night after a meeting, I went to a bar with some colleagues and left my purse unattended at my bar stool to take a shot at pool. My back might have been turned for 40 seconds. I discovered about 5 minutes later that 500 bucks in cash had been lifted from my wallet. Rent was due the next morning. I nearly vomited. I also NEVER walked about with that kind of cash in my wallet again (always, always on me somewhere) and never again left my purse unattended at a bar.
