Streetlevel: New Fulton Restaurant Has a Name

The new restaurant venture at 946 Fulton Street at Cambridge Place is coming more into focus. Earlier this week a sign with the name Buka went up in the window. There's a spot by the same name in Washington, D.C. that serves African food, so maybe that's what's in store here as well.

I hope it's good, and I'll certainly support it. If it's like the Buka in DC and Atlanta, the reviews suggest it'll fit in with what already exists on Fulton. Not exactly pushing the envelope though.

If you go to the link Brownstoner posted, you'll see that the review says the place in DC serves "African" food. The place called Buka in Atlanta says it serves "Nigerian" and "all A-F-R-I-K-A" food on its MySpace page. So I think it's fair that Brownstoner says it could serve "African" food versus a specific African country's food based on the information out there.

Africa is a continent. It has dozens of countries and dishes that range from dishes based on food harvested in semi-desert or rain forest, from Muslim to French and European-influenced fare to jungle-based crop cuisine to poached bush meat dishes to bags of UN-supplied grain to cattle blood mixed with milk.

Saying that it may be an African restaurant gives as much information as saying that it will serve vegetables.

I agree with you that Africa is a complex continent with a huge range of cuisines, BUT Brownstoner is just giving readers some idea of what they might expect to find when it opens. Like, you're more likely to find thiebu djeun there than sushi or spaghetti or burritos.

And please, he's only reporting on what he found at websites of other restaurants called Buka. Maybe you should leave messages for them. I bet they'd love to be enlightened about the food they're serving.
