ROUBINI SAYS THE RECESSION IS OVER.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at October 27, 2009 9:17 AM

2 complaints...1st - why when barely raining to people insist on crowded sidewalks to use those huge umbrellas...and then talk on cellphone on same time ?

last evening after working out at Y, I'm leaving shower room and this guy is bringing his (estimated) 4 year old girl into steam room. Now you folks that have or had little girls, at what age do you not bring thru mens locker room and what kinda idiot brings a child into steam room (unsafe)- and with more possibly naked men sitting around.
The sight of some these guys naked is enough to scare me...
what about a young girl?

Posted by: Petebklyn at October 27, 2009 9:19 AM

Can anyone tell me who this Lally or Lolly woman is who writes for the Post or the Daily News??? I can't seem to dig up her name and I met her last night at a function at the Metropolitan Museum.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at October 27, 2009 9:20 AM

Can anyone tell me whose legs Shane Victorino is wearing on the NY Post cover?

Posted by: northsloperenter at October 27, 2009 10:37 AM

Dave, I recall Dr. Doom's prediction about a year and a half ago calling the recession to be over around this time. Even he said that speculating that this was going to be the next Depression was delusional.

So, do tell us all about this Met function.

Can anyone tell me whose legs Shane Victorino is wearing on the NY Post cover?

Posted by: northsloperenter at October 27, 2009 10:37 AM

pete- that's really surprising- not just for her health. Very creepy and I am surprised the place allowed it.

Posted by: bxgrl at October 27, 2009 10:38 AM

Testing, testing...is this thing on??? Seems like there was a breakdown at Brownstoner this morning. I suspect it was the rush of enthusiasm for another curb cut post.

Today's NY Post cover is hilarious. DIBS, have you seen it?

Posted by: benson at October 27, 2009 10:42 AM

Yeah something was up with Brownstoner this morning. Couldn't get into any posts. Seems to be fixed now.

Posted by: Kensingtonian at October 27, 2009 10:45 AM

I'm with bxgrl, pretty surprised and I'm kind of uncomfortable with that idea.

Posted by: cobblehiller at October 27, 2009 10:46 AM

bxgrl, they didn't allow really. I told the locker room attendent and they told him out. Just curious at what age people thought little girls don't belong in men's locker room.

Posted by: Petebklyn at October 27, 2009 10:46 AM

Pete your radar went off with good reason.

That is unacceptable. Frankly, if I had been one of the guys in that room I'd have said something to the management.

Posted by: TownhouseLady at October 27, 2009 10:49 AM

I grew up in a household that wasn't super uptight about nudity so I don't think that merely seeing a naked person is something to be shocked about. HOWEVER, there's a time a place. I think taking a kid in to go to the bathroom is one thing. Taking them in to 'tour' the facilities is another.

Posted by: TownhouseLady at October 27, 2009 10:52 AM

Recently we discussed some weird cultural aspects of Japan. You know what is the weirdest to me? Japanese families take a bath together at night. That's right: mom, dad, and the kids all take a bath together. I just can't imagine it....

Posted by: benson at October 27, 2009 10:53 AM

I can imagine a situation where a father might need to take a little girl in to use the bathroom, but otherwise — not something I'd like to see happening.

Posted by: cobblehiller at October 27, 2009 10:53 AM

SUCCESS....I bet you're all glad to see me. I was having withdrawal.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at October 27, 2009 11:02 AM

It has a ewww factor. And at that age, isn't a steam room a bad place to be? It's tough on adults, but a 4 year old is way too small to handle those conditions. they dehydrate really quickly.

Posted by: bxgrl at October 27, 2009 11:03 AM

What? Oh, yeah...sure (psst- cobble! Who's this dave guy?)

Posted by: bxgrl at October 27, 2009 11:04 AM

I was wondering the same thing Bxgrl...

Posted by: TownhouseLady at October 27, 2009 11:05 AM

benson--the family bath is Clinton Hill tradition too. At least in my house it is. I don't know how old my oldest will have to be for it to become inappropriate but at these young ages it is fun for the kids and for me too.

Posted by: wasder at October 27, 2009 11:06 AM

Wasder;

In the case of Japan, the kids often continue to bathe with the parents up until about age 16 or so. Not saying there's anything wrong with it, it's just really outside my comfort level.

Posted by: benson at October 27, 2009 11:08 AM

The Met affair last night was a book introduction by one of our partners for his art collection. He threw a huge party and we got a private showing of the Robert Frank photography exhibit.

His book on his collection can be viewed here.

[BURSTS THROUGH BARRICADES]

My God, I thought I'd NEVER get in here today! Morning all. I'd say "Good" morning, but it's not off to a good start since people who shall remain nameless [Pete] kept hitting me with their oversized umbrellas whilst talking on their cell phones and using their BlackBerries.

Posted by: CGar at October 27, 2009 11:09 AM

I think today's NY Post cover has it right about Philadelphia Philles. And Shane Victorino is a loser.

Posted by: East New York at October 27, 2009 11:11 AM

Posted by: brownstoner at October 27, 2009 11:20 AM

The NY Post cover is funny.

It will be even funnier when Shane goes 3 for 5 tomorrow and scores the game winning run.

I think Yankees fans have officially crossed the line from "confident" to "so completely over confident that the look of despair and confusion on their faces if they lose will be much more funny than touching".

Posted by: northsloperenter at October 27, 2009 11:20 AM

rob, do you guarantee that they will poop????

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at October 27, 2009 11:20 AM

As the father of a young girl, toilet okay (in a stall), steam room definitely not okay.

Posted by: the chicken at October 27, 2009 11:20 AM

LOL, *rob*. Y'know, I'm sure if you posted that on Craig's List, you'd get replies from celebrity wannabes if not celebrities. "Dog Walker to the Stars"

Does anybody know the old NYC/Brooklyn greeting?

Posted by: benson at October 27, 2009 11:33 AM

Hi everyone!!!! I've missed you guys!!! Been pretty busy and very stress out!!! I hope everyone is doing well.

As a mother of a six year old girl, I definitely agree that taking a little girl into a steam room full of men who might be naked is very creepy and inappropriate.

Posted by: faithful at October 27, 2009 11:35 AM

oops!!! I meant "stressed."

Posted by: faithful at October 27, 2009 11:36 AM

"I think today's NYP cover is their funniest ever. Ya gotta admit, sometimes their brand of journalism is just laugh-out-loud funny."

No question, Benson. They are the absolute best at headlines and covers. I remember when years ago when the Post covered complaints from housing complex' residents about noisy ice-cream trucks. In the article, Tom Carvel told Mayor Bloomberg he would take care of it.

The headline? "Mr. Softee Pledges Cones of Silence."

Posted by: East New York at October 27, 2009 11:36 AM

faithful- welcome back!! Mm and I wondered where you've been.

Posted by: bxgrl at October 27, 2009 11:37 AM

Ignore away, THL. I won't even correct you. (Though I might make a crude comment today if you awaken from a nap surrounded by pussies.)

Posted by: CGar at October 27, 2009 11:38 AM

Agree, ENY. It's a shame about the rest of the newspaper though.

Posted by: bxgrl at October 27, 2009 11:39 AM

LOL, fair enough CGar!

Faithful! Good to have you back.

Posted by: TownhouseLady at October 27, 2009 11:40 AM

CGar- behave. THL is thinking for 2 these days :)

Posted by: bxgrl at October 27, 2009 11:41 AM

"It will be even funnier when Shane goes 3 for 5 tomorrow and scores the game winning run."

Yeah, he's going to get three hits off of CC. Not!

"I think Yankees fans have officially crossed the line from "confident" to "so completely over confident that the look of despair and confusion on their faces if they lose will be much more funny than touching".

The collective countenance of the Philadelphia fan base, post-Series loss, will be neither funny nor touching. It will be ugly. And then the blame cycle will begin.

Posted by: East New York at October 27, 2009 11:43 AM

Bxgrl- It's more along the lines of not thinking. I'm an ADD poster child these days. I retain a thought for 10 minutes tops. Then if it's not completed or written down it's gone into the ether.

Posted by: TownhouseLady at October 27, 2009 11:44 AM

Yeah, the rest of the paper is crap, bxgrl. However I did some freelance reporting there in the 1990s, and at that time anyway, they paid well.

Posted by: East New York at October 27, 2009 11:44 AM

This yankee fan is not over confident. I really think this series is going the distance. Anybody who thinks that the Yanks are going to shut down a line up like the Phillies is dreaming. Its actually surprising how similar these teams are in some fundamental ways--strong line-ups 1-9, strong veteran starting pitching. Yanks should have bull pen advantage and of course home field advantage is huge in a series like this. Really should go 7.

Posted by: wasder at October 27, 2009 11:46 AM

"of course! and ill even make sure some dumbass steps in it before i scoop it up!

Hey that was funny, Rob!

Posted by: East New York at October 27, 2009 11:46 AM

Call the NYP what you will, but I wonder if Charlie Rangel would agree with that assessment. The Post has been way out front on ole' Charlie's shenanigans. Why, if it were not for the NYP, Charlie would still relaxing in his beach-front villa, the rental income from which he paid no income taxes.

Posted by: benson at October 27, 2009 11:51 AM

faithful, weren't you suppose to show up to one of the gatherings a while ago with a cute single latina friend? :o)

Posted by: Kensingtonian at October 27, 2009 11:54 AM

It's a rag. They lie and make up stories that destroy people's lives. My organization and the people I worked for went through it. I know whereof I speak. And the NYP had to post a retraction. But the damage was already done, his reputation was in tatters and the organization lost so much money to lawyers it had to shut down. So don't get me started on the "journalistic integrity" of the NYP. It has absolutely none.

Posted by: bxgrl at October 27, 2009 11:57 AM

The Post, surprisingly, also covers media (Keith Kelley's column), business and state politics very well. It's also unfortunately a part of the Murdoch media empire, which is clearly "right-leaning," but personally I don't rely on any one source to formulate my political beliefs, so it's no big deal to me.

I was definitely offended by the "dead monkey" cartoon a while back, which I thought was quite clearly targeted at the President. But then again considering The Post is again a Murdoch's paper, that wasn't much of a surprise.

Nobody responded to my trivia question above.

The old NYC/Brooklyn greeting was "How's tricks"? It basically had the same meaning as "Howyadoin" does today. I have no idea of the origins of this expression.

Posted by: benson at October 27, 2009 12:03 PM

"How's tricks"

I thought it was "stupid bastard," that's how my Brooklyn-born relatives always addressed me...

Posted by: Joe from Brooklyn at October 27, 2009 12:06 PM

benson--i say how's tricks all the time but never associated it specifically with Brooklyn.

Posted by: wasder at October 27, 2009 12:08 PM

CGar, so this ID change is permanent or you're now 1 of those multi-ID posters?

Posted by: more4less at October 27, 2009 1:54 PM

m4l, I couldn't log in this morning using my regular screen name. I couldn't reset my password. Nothing worked. The site finally let me create a new profile, so I used CGar. I'll probably go back to CarrollGardened, but I figured everyone would still know it's me.

CGar? What have you done with my e-hubby. This had better not be one of those alien abduction things or you'll hear from my government!

Arkady, I emailed him twice, once about the site being down, and then when the site came back, but I still couldn't log in. I felt just like Fred Flintstone after the cat locks him out of the house. Got a nice email back, too.

I don't Facebook either. My blog is my Facebook. I spoke to someone I went to H.S. with. She had her husband who is a cop find me (abuse of power says what?)!

She said, "Sooooo many people are wondering why you don't Facebook." I said, "who?". She said, "About 70% of your graduating class!".

That right there is why I don't Facebook. I want 70% of my graduating class knowing what I'm up to? Oh hell to the nizzo! I don't even remember that many people. It's just kinda weird to me.

I said to her, the few people I kept up with (all of 2) know where to find me. Other than that I'm incognito! I think she was offended. Tough shit stalker.

He's right. The depression has begun. Even in his words, with regard to the price of gold, he hints that we might be headed for a depression.

"...it can’t move up 20-30 percent unless we end up in a world of inflation or another depression. I don’t see either of those being likely for the time being. Maybe three or four years from now, yes. But not anytime soon." - One-on-one w/ Seeking Alpha 10/23/09

"Maybe three or four years from now..."??? "...yes"???!!! That's what a depression is, a long ass recession (but officially called a 'depression') three or four plus years out.

Thanks, DIBS. The sooner we get through this thing, the better. I don't want us to lose more than one decade like Japan is.

Link to me on LinkedIn, that's what it's for! Facebook is real friends and family only. I have 42 friends. I know people with 175+. Really? You speak to them often? You call them for birthdays? They're your friend? BALONEY! 95% of them are your acquaintance or you worked with them for a bit. I hate all this FAKE friendyness.

Posted by: cobblehiller at October 27, 2009 2:48 PM

BTW I posted a forum topic (see below)
Anyone out there that has ever done a restoration/reno this is a questions for you! I noticed that on the This Old House: Brooklyn edition when they were taking down walls, picking up floor boards there were no sign of either rodents or insects. Was this stuff cleaned up before it went on camera? What's in the walls/floors of a 100-year-old house? From Forum

Anyone know? I think Rob was curious about 100-year-old roach feces...

Posted by: Joe from Brooklyn at October 27, 2009 2:54 PM

I've done a lot of invasive work on my house & have never seen any vermin. One very rainy summer I had a couple of mice come in from the garden - as did neighbors. Oh, the joy of cats!

Posted by: Arkady at October 27, 2009 2:58 PM

I use facebook primarily as a professional tool and have a page for my business. Like or hate it, for me it has been a very useful too. I do however have a bunch of random and unwanted people from high school and college on my friend list but still...on balance I am glad I am on facebook. For the people I do want to keep up with personally it has proven to be a bonus, reminding me of my friend's birthdays and allowing me to see in a snap what they are up to if I so desire. Yes there are highly annoying and philosophically dubious aspects to it but it has been more good than bad for me.

I use both Facebook (for personal and business), LinkedIn (business)and Twitter (business) but certainly understand how/why people don't or won't use either. I don't think either is essential to any particular function of living. And yeah, the friendyness is mostly fake, but that's not much different from a lot of life "offline" if you think about it. Your frenemies are just a bit closer.

However, I do refuse to post on the What's site. I have enough trouble finding time to post here. Enough already!

I have a plain vanilla Facebook page. I was dragged kicking and screaming onto Facebook by a few relatives, and I actually like it for reconnecting with people - not people whom I was never friendly with, but friends whom I'd inadvertently lost touch with (long before cell phones and email). I also like to be able to access friends pages to look at their photos, and it's a nice way to keep up with those friends you don't see or speak with regularly (like out of town friends). I have no interest in posting a play-by-play of my day, or reading what my friends are doing moment-by-moment - we have the OT for that.

Posted by: CGar at October 27, 2009 3:05 PM

Joe;

I gutted out an entire 6-room apartment in my previous house. No vermin traces found. Interestingly, I did find a newspaper under a stairwell from August 1928, which is when the house was built. Only problem was that as soon as I handled it, it broke up into a million different pieces.

it is weird seeing people so many years later. almost every chick i went to high school with it got super fat and squeezed out like 2 kids each and even most of the men turned out super ugly. for the most part everyone you knew was gay back then is gay now and eh, you see how life screws you over. most of the people who were dumb in high school seem the most successful now and the nerds back then are now all dead and/or screw ups!

Joe;

I thought of you this weekend. My wife and I went to Marco Polo on Sunday. After seeing your post a couple of weeks ago, I figured I would give it a try. I haven't been there in years.

Sorry to say, but that place still leaves me scratching my head. It strikes me that the place can't decide what it wants to be: old-school, red-sauce Italian or a fine dining establishment. Even the decor is exactly like that. I had their prix-fixe meal and went with the broiled sole in lemon-wine sauce. Frankly, it wasn't much better than Olive Garden.

Perhaps their specials are good. Next time I good (will probably be a LONG time) I'll ask you for advice.

Posted by: Kensingtonian at October 27, 2009 3:22 PM

THL;

Here's my rule:

-when I'm in NYC and some parts of Jersey, I wouldn't get caught dead in places like Olive Garden. Of course, I stick to good local places.

-outside of these areas, especially in places like Dallas or Georgia, I stick to Olive Garden. May not be my mom's cooking, but it's better than alot of "Eye-talian" that the local places there try to serve you.

Posted by: benson at October 27, 2009 3:22 PM

I actually really like that soup, salad, breadstick deal they have. It's good.

That commercial has always just cracked me up though. Seriously Olive Garden, you're a chain restaurant. No-one is bringing cousin Luigi from the old country in for authentic dining. Don't even try to play like that!

Posted by: TownhouseLady at October 27, 2009 3:24 PM

did you use valet parking at Marco Polo? - wasn't the owner caught up in some sort or scandal last year or something.
I am going to my 3rd meeting today (all which I hate) - and
only reconfirms my suspicion that management is so bogus and all they do is throw around buzzwords and really have no conception of what they are doing. (I work in IT). Promoted because they can make good smalltalk.

Posted by: Petebklyn at October 27, 2009 3:24 PM

I'd agree w/ the second half of your 3:22 post, Benson. But when I'm not in NYC (or someplace like Philadelphia) I just resign myself to the fact that I'm not going to get any good Italian food in that city. Still not going to Olive Garden. I just can't wrap my head around the concept of mass-produced Italian cuisine.

Posted by: East New York at October 27, 2009 3:26 PM

True Benson. I used to travel to Georgia or work very frequently and we used to hit up the O.G. every so often.

Usually though, I like to go to the places that I can't go when I'm here. Unfortunately a lot of those great southern places can get a little bit "heavy". So we'd mix it up.

So far the best red-sauce place I have found in the greater PS area is Cucina Napolitana on Columbia Street between Union and Sackett.

If you want to go futher afield, I recommend La Palina on Ave O between West 4th and 5th, in my old neighborhood. Place has been around for over 80 years.

Actually, La Palina has an interesting history. It used to be located near the Navy Yard, at which time it was a BIG mob hang-out. Since it moved to Gravesend, it's just regular old-timers.

"benson, we got to go to Saraghina some night"

DIBS;

You're on. Maybe in a week or two. Better if we get ENY to come.

Posted by: benson at October 27, 2009 3:48 PM

M4L:

I do believe it. The fighting around here has been slim pickin's lately! The fights that do come up aren't even worth it because they seem to be with people who are missing some chromosomes or something. Not a fair fight really.

I guess it's just a slow time on Bstoner for now. I'm not feeling super riled up about anything at the moment, otherwise I'd try to give you a little more to work with.

I saw the fight with you and antidope, and you held your own. Antidope seems ok though...good for stirring the pot and he/she likes to find facts more than others around here, which I do appreciate.

re: LXTV - I'll never tell. :)

Posted by: 11217 at October 27, 2009 3:48 PM

Wow, they really are beating up on *rob* pretty bad in the Pediatrics Office thread.

Garlic salt and margarine = garlic bread, LOL. I've had that served to me before.

Posted by: CGar at October 27, 2009 3:48 PM

rob can hold his own, even if it doesn't make any sense.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at October 27, 2009 3:50 PM

yeah they are pouncing on me hard in there. they must have a lot of pervert doctors in their families or something.

*rob*

Posted by: Butterfly at October 27, 2009 3:52 PM

Rob, you've been throwing antagonistic comments out for a while now hoping someone would bite and spar with you. Now you're complaining that they''re being meanies? Oh stop it!

Posted by: TownhouseLady at October 27, 2009 3:54 PM

How about pizza in Binghamton? big squares of french Bread, Canned spaghetti sauce and American cheese. Grilled. Thank goodness NYC pizza finally made it up there.

Posted by: bxgrl at October 27, 2009 3:55 PM

"rob can hold his own"

I'm guessing thats exactly what he does when the logic has gone

Posted by: dittoburg at October 27, 2009 3:55 PM

If you end up like Tom Hanks in Castaway, you'd better be able to hold your own

Posted by: CGar at October 27, 2009 3:57 PM

ben and gem,

...I take a different approach. I always eat at the Olive Garden or a comparable chain restaurant.
That way I'm spared the anger and resentment of traveling somewhere and being disappointed by the food.
;)

Posted by: Legion at October 27, 2009 3:57 PM

Bxgrl- Don't even talk to me about pizza. I'm 15 minutes from NYC and it took us 3 months and at least 10 pizza places till we found a good one that would deliver to us.

Most Prescient Post of the Day

Posted by: Biff Champion at October 27, 2009 4:04 PM

I must admit, I think Olive Garden salad dressing is not half bad. In my defense, lest anyone think I've never tasted anything decent in my life, I did also eat at Per Se last month.

Posted by: dittoburg at October 27, 2009 4:04 PM

my wife loves olive garden. I relayed ENY's msg that she would be deemed a loser for loving it and I got smacked on side of head so I too am loving olive garden. ENY, that decision is a wise outcome of the cost benefit analysis

Posted by: more4less at October 27, 2009 4:09 PM

Hola losers! Busy day here. Had to tell you this about food...in Louisiana my cousins and I discovered a place called Dodge's Chicken. It's really a gas station that sells gas (duh!), fried chicken, various fried pies (the spicy fried sweet potato pie was off the hook!), beer, candy, soda, cigs ($4 per pack or $7.25 for 2 packs!!!), tires, motor oil, Western Union services, passport photos and a bunch of other things I can't recall right now. Their current deal is if you buy at least $10 worth of gas, you get a 3 piece chicken dinner for $3. Talk about multi-tasking!

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at October 27, 2009 4:13 PM

Thanks a lot, M4L. Because of you, Ms. M4L will probably kick me in the ass if we ever meet.

Posted by: East New York at October 27, 2009 4:14 PM

Gotta give *rob* credit for knowing how to start a row - one comment from him, and there are 80 posts and counting on the 4th Avenue doctor's office thread

Posted by: CGar at October 27, 2009 4:14 PM

11217 - you're a douche and al di la sux!

just kidding - have you been to the vanderbilt yet?

Posted by: dirty_hipster at October 27, 2009 4:16 PM

Biff - Benson also predicted the OT thread on that day being all men in the morning (no homo) and all cats in the afternoon.

So Benson - what's your take on the current dip in the DOW?, should I buy more mutual funds with my spare 401K cash or wait another month until things get even cheaper?

Posted by: dittoburg at October 27, 2009 4:19 PM

ENY, I got your explicit approval to relay to her lovers of olive garden are losers.

DH, I think etson and jester liked the Vanderbilt. Where they at? Etson? Jester?

Posted by: CGar at October 27, 2009 4:22 PM

DH, what are you doing here man? shouldn't you be still packing up the delicate & fancy china

Posted by: more4less at October 27, 2009 4:23 PM

Ditto;

Please give a few more days on that. I'm developing a new "composite market index" that considers in all the key factors: my dust-ups with Bxgrl, Rob's rant of the day, the number of cat posts and finally, 11217's vacation schedule.

Posted by: benson at October 27, 2009 4:24 PM

What if the offer a corn on a cob deal? Maybe then you buy that and can fill up the car with your own gas. We can consider that 2 for 1 deal.

COUNT ME IN.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at October 27, 2009 4:30 PM

Truly, DH. Seems like a place for a gathering. There was another new place they mentioned nearby, but the name escapes me, and they're clearly being no help today.

How goes the packing?

I love it. You can fill both your empty tanks and end up with gas in both!

Posted by: Biff Champion at October 27, 2009 4:54 PM

snappy,
all kidding aside, I've been picking up an italian sandwich at a gas station/quickie mart in Canarsie recently and it is better than my local italian deli. I don't know if it's the bread or the ham or what. But for $3.99, you cannot beat it.

Posted by: Legion at October 27, 2009 4:57 PM

etson, WHERE have you been hiding out?

Biff, I'm slightly shorter than Lurch, but "You rang, Mr. Addams" is one of my favorite lines.

Posted by: Kensingtonian at October 27, 2009 4:59 PM

Benson - thanks -will remember Columbia Street!
I admit guys - I love Olive Garden
they had tasty wines and I like the bread sticks - so what!
and their tomato sauce is actually really good
not like am going in there ordering fettucine alfredo with sausage topped with Tirmiasu
I know ENY thinks am wack - but it's fine - it is what it is
I DEF don't like Red Lobster except those cheddar cheese biscuits are unreal!
hahaha!

I will report back tomorrow. I've heard very very good things from the couple people I know who have tried it so far.

or at least I was 13 then and my taste buds weren't that discerning

Posted by: Legion at October 27, 2009 5:10 PM

The original Sbarro's was on the corner of 17th Ave and 65th Street in Bensonhurst. That was the real deal, before they went and franchised the concept.

Posted by: benson at October 27, 2009 5:11 PM

Cool 11217 - enjoy

Posted by: dirty_hipster at October 27, 2009 5:13 PM

etson, don't forget you have a minimum 3 hour/week posting obligation here on the OT (more stringent than the Park Slope Food Co-op).

Posted by: CGar at October 27, 2009 5:16 PM

sbarro is better than grimaldi's, that overrated tourist trap

Posted by: dirty_hipster at October 27, 2009 5:16 PM

I guess that means I'll have to write every other post when I am back properly, following co-op 'death spiral' rules re penalty shifts.

Posted by: etson at October 27, 2009 5:20 PM

DH, are you talking about Grimaldi's near the Fulton Landing? I have to say, last time I was there, the pizza we ordered was not very good - wet and soggy, and our topping was pepperoni

Posted by: CGar at October 27, 2009 5:21 PM

That's what I'm sayin', etson!

(We put the "P" in pathetic today for sure - not even going to break 300 posts in the OT, though that Pediatrics Office post . . . )

Posted by: CGar at October 27, 2009 5:27 PM

you got it cgar

a friend from out of town insisted on going as they read somewhere it was the best in NYC. I grudgingly accepted, as I had already written Grimaldi's off 4 years ago. After a 45 minute wait outside, and another 20 inside, Our pizza arrived, soggy and burnt to a crisp. Usually I'm not one to complain, but when I brought it to the attention of our server, he started lecturing me how I must not have ever had real NYC pizza before - that this is how it was supposed to be served. I laughed in his face and wished him luck ripping off tourists from Missouri

Posted by: dirty_hipster at October 27, 2009 5:30 PM

We must have waited an hour outside and a half-our inside for our soggy pizza. Totally not worth it. I don't get the lines. I don't get the raves. I brought out-of-town friends too. Close to home, after some trial and error, I order brick oven pizza from Sal's on Court (not their regular pizza which I find doughy and tasteless). It's thin, crisp, not soggy, fresh ingredients. Haven't been disappointed yet.

Quite OK, Gemini....I am not by any means the final arbiter of taste. Olive Garden doesn't work for me, but that's just a personal thing.

Posted by: East New York at October 27, 2009 5:45 PM

So what's worse...Olive Garden or Red Lobster? :-)

"Quite OK, Gemini....I am not by any means the final arbiter of taste. Olive Garden doesn't work for me, but that's just a personal thing."

If the tour of italy was called 'tour of yankee stadium' you'd love it!

Posted by: dirty_hipster at October 27, 2009 5:55 PM

Snappy - I'd have to say Red Lobster in that they serve food which appears to be made from rubber, whereas Olive Garden food is actually edible.

Posted by: dittoburg at October 27, 2009 5:56 PM

"So what's worse...Olive Garden or Red Lobster? :-)"

Red Lobster is a good value, as it seems every meal comes with a free colon cleansing (no homo)

Sarah Palin has forgiven David Letterman, but one restaurant chain will never forget. Olive Garden has announced that they are pulling their ads from "The Late Show With David Letterman" following his jokes about the Alaska Governor.

Following a week of back and forth between CBS late night comic David Letterman and Sarah Palin over a crude joke he told about the Alaska Republican governor's daughter, the Olive Garden restaurant says it is canceling all of its scheduled ads on Letterman's "Late Show" for the rest of the year.

In an email obtained by Politico, a spokeswoman for the chain told a Letterman-criticizing pasta fan that "there will be no more Olive Garden ads scheduled for 'The Late Show' with David Letterman in this year's broadcast schedule."

"We apologize that Mr. Letterman's mistake, which was not consistent with our standards and values, left you with a bad impression of Olive Garden," wrote Sherri Bruen, the company's guest relations manager.

An official statement is coming soon, according to the Christian Science Monitor.

Olive Garden may feel some loyalty to Palin. During the campaign, her running mate ate there with Sens. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) and Joe Lieberman (I-Conn.).

"When I saw them come in, I was like wow -- John McCain is at Olive Garden," the group's waiter said at the time.
