Federal investigators in the Galleon Group case have requested trading records from a hedge-fund manager who once worked for Steven A. Cohen's SAC Capital Advisors and who employed a cooperating witness in the insider-trading case announced last week, people familiar with the matter say.

The subpoena sent to the hedge-fund manager, Richard Grodin, doesn't suggest wrongdoing. Nor does it suggest that Mr. Cohen -- one of the nation's most well-known and successful hedge-fund managers -- has been implicated in any way, or that he knew about any trading by Mr. Grodin that the U.S. is seeking to examine as part of its continuing case.

The subpoena, sent in the past week, is the first indication that the circle of trading being examined in the case is broadening.

It also illustrates how traders engulfed in the alleged insider-trading ring had many personal and professional ties, and signals a potential avenue investigators may be following in the burgeoning case. In this instance, Mr. Grodin also employed a former employee of an investor-relations firm who prosecutors say passed along inside information in the case about Google Inc., according to people familiar with the matter.

Mr. Grodin didn't return calls for comment on Friday.

An SAC spokesman said Mr. Grodin left SAC in January 2004 and that Mr. Cohen didn't invest in Mr. Grodin's most-recent fund. Spokesmen for the Securities and Exchange Commission and the Justice Department's U.S. Attorney's Office in Manhattan declined to comment.

In criminal and civil cases, the U.S. has alleged that Galleon hedge-fund founder Raj Rajaratnam was part of an insider-trading ring that also has ensnared a number of corporate executives and employees -- an alleged conspiracy in which Mr. Rajaratnam and executives at blue-chip firms including International Business Machines Corp. and Intel Corp. allegedly connived to profit on Google and other big-name stocks. Mr. Rajaratnam and others involved in the case have said they are innocent.

Mr. Cohen has claimed a special place in the $1.2 trillion hedge-fund industry. He has received $1 billion in pay in some years and he has gained a following for producing annual returns of roughly 15%.

Mr. Cohen runs SAC's main hedge fund and has invested money on behalf of his investors as well as his own money in funds run by former SAC managers. Over the years, Mr. Grodin has worked as a portfolio manager for SAC, as well as a division that invested SAC investors' money. He also ran a separate independent fund in which Mr. Cohen was an investor.

It is unclear which specific trades of Mr. Grodin's and their timing are being sought. The 6-foot-5 Mr. Grodin, 40 years old, took time away from his hedge fund this summer to play in a basketball tournament in Israel, a person familiar with the matter says.

Raj Rajaratnam, shown with Asha Rajaratnam, is being investigated for his alleged involvement in one of the largest cases of insider trading.
Mr. Grodin and Choo Beng Lee, who has been identified as a cooperating witness in the government's case, have ties that stretch back to the late 1990s when the two worked for SAC, people familiar with the matter say. Mr. Grodin was a portfolio manager and Mr. Lee was an analyst that worked with him.

Several years later, Mr. Grodin broke away from the main SAC fund to work at Sigma, an SAC division, where Mr. Grodin continued to work as a portfolio manager and Mr. Lee continued to serve as an analyst for him. Mr. Lee's lawyer declined to comment.

Mr. Grodin later launched a hedge-fund named Stratix outside of SAC's sphere, in which Mr. Cohen was an investor. At Stratix, Mr. Lee worked for Mr. Grodin for several years, according to people familiar with the matter. Mr. Grodin closed Stratix in December 2007.

Mr. Lee formed his own fund, Spherix with Ali Far, who also has been identified by people close to the probe as another of the government's cooperating witnesses in the case. SAC never invested in Mr. Lee's and Mr. Far's fund.

Around the same time, Mr. Grodin opened another fund, Quadrum Capital. He closed that fund in recent weeks, people close to the situation say. Mr. Far didn't respond to requests for comment.

In March 2009, Messrs. Lee and Far closed their fund, which had posted returns of around 10% for the year, people familiar with the matter say. Some rival hedge-fund managers said shutting the fund amid such good returns aroused suspicions that something was amiss. In the weeks following the closure, Mr. Lee approached Mr. Cohen about rehiring him and was rejected, a person familiar with the matter says.

Another individual who worked as a low-level assistant for Mr. Grodin and with Mr. Lee at Stratix was an individual whom prosecutors now allege passed along inside information regarding Google.

That individual, identified by people familiar with the matter as Shammara Hussain, left Stratix in May 2007 to briefly work for Market Street, a small San Francisco investor-relations firm.

A lawyer for Ms. Hussain, 23, who hasn't been named or charged by prosecutors, said her client intends to cooperate and that she "didn't ask for or receive money in connection with conversations about Google. Whatever happened was a naive mistake," the lawyer says.

Since former mayor David Dinkins has been discussed here, to his detriment, and Guiliani is picking on him again, the NYT offers today a balanced view of his administration.

All right, I think rob's had the final word on the global war on terrorism.

Meanwhile, good post, denton. We live in a very different city than we did in 1989 or 1975. NYC is far better run than it was 30+ years ago, due to the efforts of the last four mayors (and they all deserve some credit here). Bloomberg has continued to professionalize the way things are done, to his credit, but it is wrong to think that a different mayor will undermine those or the previous mayors' efforts. For example, crime, does anyone really think Thompson will lay off thousands of cops or make them stop using comstat, or that the amount of crime is solely a function of who is mayor? The 20-year decline in violent crime was a national trend on which NYC was a leader, but not an exception. There are good reasons to vote for either candidate, but let's keep things in perspective.

DIBS asked about the Brownstoner sweatshirt in the Martha video. A couple of years ago we took some orders and got a batch made, so there are 10 or 12 floating around out there, though we've never seen anyone sporting one on the street. If peeps are interested, we can do another batch. Think they were about $50, because they are American Apparel sweatshirts with the lettering actually sewn on.

dibs,

The good reasons include reasons that others have posted, but you disagree with them. Some people disagree with his policies on development, or take issue on term limits, etc. I don't want to get much into my views of either candidate. My larger point was that the bad old days argument is an unrealistic view.

Rudy Guiliani was the most divisive, arrogant, petty, and vindictive mayor this city has had in living memory. I don't understand why he is given god-like status by people. First of all, to this day, he's never gotten past the fact that Dinkins beat him to become mayor in the first place. He started ragging on Dinkins before the swearing in, and hasn't stopped yet. The Times article is a fair accounting of an administration during a tougher than usual time in our history. I think it's telling that Dinkins, who never has gotten a fair assessment for his anti-crime initiatives, hired Ray Kelly as police chief, something Bloomberg was smart enough to repeat. Rudy fired Kelly because Rudy doesn't share the spotlight well, and hired Bernard Kerik. Kerik's biggest skill was in currying favor with the boss, and letting him get all the glory. Kelly's programs were already in place, and were getting results. We can all see how well Bernie's been doing. Oh, yeah, he's in jail. I'm sure he called Rudy's office for some help. I'm also sure Rudy said, "Bernie who? I don't know anyone named Bernie Kerik."

Good morning everyone. I’ve made it back to Brooklyn. Things are still a bit emotionally off kilter, but I wanted to pop in and share something with you all. As you know, my gramma passed and I headed off to Louisiana for the services. Whenever traveling around the country, I’m always taking note of different customs and traditions of various people and places. Everyone has always said that true southern peoples are the most polite and respecting people in the country. Having visited the deep south many times in my life it was something I always believed as well, but was really struck by it over the last few days. Southern tradition demands that the ultimate respect is always shown for a life lost and the grieving family left behind. After the funeral we did the typical funeral car procession to the burial site. As all of our cars followed the hearse down the winding roads and highways from the church to the grave, every single car on the opposite side of the road pulled over and stopped. The men in those cars took off their hats and they all bowed their heads. Radios were turned off, cigarettes put out, children in the back seat immediately stopped yelling. All of these cars did not start up again until our entire procession had passed, as they feel it is the ultimate disrespect to drive by a family proceeding in grief. It sounds so simple, so natural, but it touched me. I felt like every person along those roads were saying that they felt our pain and wanted to be sure that I and my family knew that we would not be the only ones praying for my gramma’s soul. I love the south :-)

And, on a lighter note, I was also struck by funny character of my fellow New Yorkers. On my return flight, I had a short layover in North Carolina. When we finally began to board the plane in NC to come back to LaGuardia, I could tell that most passengers were New Yorkers. I heard fewer “yes ma’am” and “no sir” and very few southern accents. But the funniest part was that one guy on the plane about 2 rows behind me would not turn off his cellphone so that we could push back from the gate and head over to take off. The flight attendant kept asking him to shut it off, but he would not listen. Finally, the flight attendant got on the loudspeaker and announced to the rest of us that we were going to be late because that one guy was still talking on his cell. The New York accents suddenly came out and the plane was filled with a chorus of “GET-CHO-AZZ” as in:

GET CHO AZZ OFF THE PHONE SO WE CAN GO HOME!

IF YOU WANNA TALK ON THE PHONE WHY DON’T CHOO GET CHO AZZ OFF THE PLANE?

YOU BETTER TURN THAT DAMNED PHONE OFF BEFORE I COME BACK THERE AND GET CHO AZZ!

Rofl! I love New York :-)

That price isn't bad for a good quality sweatshirt hoodie, with costomized logo and personalized names, sewn on, not glued on or heat stamped. Considering price of shirt, costomization, shipping and handling and some profit for Brownstoner for his efforts, it's not bad. I used to have to figure these things out for a living. It's possible to get this done for much less but only if you order about 1000 units, or more, and have it done in China. Where's the Brooklyn in that?

Snappy, I'm sorry to hear about your grandmother. I know it's been a rough time for you. That Southern tradition is one of the best parts of that part of the country. At least in death, one gets some respect, it seems. People upstate NY were also more respectful of funeral processions. Here, you're just in the way of commerce. The plane story was great.

Re: Giuliani,

I went to a dinner party Friday and a friend was telling me about how Giuliani used to go to some cigar bar in Midtown every afternoon. My friend was there once when Giuliani came in. After a while, my friend went to use the bathroom.

Giuliani came in a few moments later and stood next to him at the urinals. "Hey, how you doing?" my friend said.

"Don't talk to me," said Giuliani.

Posted by: infinitejester at October 26, 2009 10:27 AM

Denton NY Times piece on Dinkins isnt balanced - its RIDICULOUS.

I love how revisionist historians give Dinkins credit for a tiny drop in crime in his last 2 years (7% - from insanely high numbers and I believe when he left office the homicide rate was STILL above Koch's final year (with all the same social ills that Dinkins faced).

Further any discussion of the Dinkins administration that doesnt directly discuss his abject failure related to the Crown Heights Riots and his disgusting silence regarding the Korean Grocery Store Boycott is a total white-wash (no pun intended)

Posted by: fsrg at October 26, 2009 10:30 AM

Thanks Montrose. You are so right. I've seen people actually honk repeatedly at slow funeral processions here in NY. Eeek! It's beyond rude.

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at October 26, 2009 10:30 AM

Don't know about NYC but I thought it was bad bathroom etiquette anywhere to talk to anyone at the urinals that isn't your friend.

Posted by: the chicken at October 26, 2009 10:31 AM

Well, nice try at some revisionist NYC history here.

Shall we now talk about some facts?

Who now remembers that moment when Dinkins's mayoralty was killed and by whom? Why, it was April, 1993 and it was done by none other than Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan, an ardent liberal of the old-school type. The event was a luncheon speech before The Association for a Better New York, and Moynihan was the featured speaker. Dinkins was in the audience, and everyone expected him to deliver the standard boiler-plate speech about how the federal government should do more to help poor old NYC.

Well, Moynihan was not going to have any of it. Moynihan considered himself to be a true liberal in the old FDR/LaGuardia sense, and he was livid about what the then-current crop of liberals(Dinkins, Messinger, Mark Green and that crowd) had allowed it to evolve to. Moynihan, who usually was scholarly in nature, tore into Dinkins and his brand of liberalism, and what it had down to NYC. The speech was truly remarkable, in that it expressed the frustration of so many New Yorkers. Moynihan's speech focused on two things: a) the inability for liberalism to accomplish anything anymore. He went through a list of great public works that were built under FDR and LaGuardia. At one point, he noted that the Bronx-Whitestone Bridge was built in 13 months, and then looked up at Dinkins and shouted at him: "Things WORKED then, Mr. Mayor, they WORKED". The brunt of Moynihan's speech, however, was an expression of his disgust at Dinkins' lax attitude towards crime. In this part of this speech, he coined a term "Defining Deviancy Down" that become famous, and he later wrote a book about it.

The speech made huge headlines. Moynihan sent out the word to MANY old-time democrats and liberals that their disgust with Dinkins was well-founded. This speech gave a major boost to Giuliani, and he then went on to beat Dinkins. Moreover, the revisionists above conveniently forget that the disgust of Dinkins was so palpable, that after Moynihan's speech the LIBERAL party decided to nominate Giuliani for mayor to run on their line. That endorsement gave Giuliani the edge to beat Dinkins, and go on to save the city. At that time, the Liberal party was #3 on the ballot.

Finally, concerning Montrose's rant above. The most disgusting racial moment in this city was the boycott of the Korean grocer on Church Ave, in which the police were ordered to do nothing for DAYS. That happened under Dinkins' watch.

Dinkins tenure was a disaster and a biased Times article cannot help him or his failed record. I recall the old City Hall Park under David Dinkins, prior to the Giuliani refurbishments. The park was a symbol of Dinkins malaise , filthy, dangerous and unkept. One thing to Dinkins credit, however, is that under him the Downtown Manhattan homeless population was somewhat well groomed. Reason being that they would bath in the City Hall fountain on a daily basis. I recall one afternoon a citizen of liesure approached the fountain with a bar of soap and a scrub brush, waded into the fountain and began his bathing ritual in front of hundreds of lunching downtown workers. He methodically lathered up , shampooed , rinsed and repeated. He was by far the most hygenic vagrant in all of Manhattan. Dinkins really did "clean up" downtown.....Just another Dinkins memory...vote carefully.

Hahaha... My parents moved to Georgia. My mom told me she likes how polite the southerners are with all their "ma'ams" and such. As a true northerner, she did say it was a bit disarming at first and took her a while to realize what's happening. For example at a shop trying to return something or a gov't office, they are being just as difficult, assholish, and/or obstructionist as anyone in the north... the difference is that they are really polite about it!!

So basically you're being dicked around, but it doesn't feel that bad. no homo.

Benson, I hardly think the worse racial moment in this city was the Korean store boycott. Please. If you don't like Dinkins, fine. He was mayor at a time when this city was pulling itself out of a deep hole, financially and culturally, and he had the misfortune to find himself at the helm when issues of race and culture exploded. Did he handle everything well? No. No mayor handles everything well. The Korean boycott was based on some messy truths, prejudice on both sides, and a lot of resentments, some justified, some not. Sounds like just about every issue that comes up. But the worst racial moment? I can think of a few body counts that were much worse. If it had happened under another administration, you wouldn't have even mentioned it.

Posted by: Montrose Morris at October 26, 2009 11:14 AM

Biff

I'm hopefully done with TWC for the time being. The problem seems to have been that instead of TRANSFERRING my account when I moved, they closed my old account and opened a new, unrelated one, which resulted in losing the e-mail address I'd been using for most of this millennium.

THEY did not figure this out.

I had a hunch this is what some idiot did and when I finally got someone to listen to me and check what happened, they confirmed it was the problem.

I'm really hating them right now.

Took 3 installation trips and 6 phone calls before they could find understand I lived in Park Slope not Williamsburg.

Then it took 8 phone calls to get my e-mail address back, and for my trouble I was offered: (1) one month free HBO, (2) 3 months free Showtime/TMC, and (3) waiver of installation fees.

The one month free HBO lasted 4 days. Based on this, I expect Showtime/TMC to last another 8 days.

I'm also expecting to see additional charges on my bill for multiple installation visits and phone tech support (plus charges for 1 month of HBO and 3 months of Showtime/TMC).

The local cable monopolies really really need to be broken up.

Posted by: brownjokester at October 26, 2009 11:23 AM

Montrose;

I repeat my assertion that the Korean boycott was the worst racial incident in the recent history of this city. I am well-aware of other incidents (such as Bensonhurst, Howard Beach, Crown Heights, etc) in which the body count was higher. However, in those other incidents, NO ONE from the city government or other positions of responsibility supported the ugly, prejuidiced POV. People spoke out against what happened, and the perpetrators were brought to justice.

In the case of the Korean boycott, the ugly racially-motivated death threats against that Korean grocer were openly stated, on TV. I saw it with my own eyes, and the reason for their death threat was openly stated: "They don't look like us". The reaction from City Hall? Nothing, for days and days..

Snappy, if you just put the flower in a shadow box; it'll dry up and wilt and eventually fall off the stem. The leaves will turn brown and crumble and you'll be left with nothing but dust.

Use the heavy book method. It works. I have a pressed rose from 15 years ago.

Posted by: East New York at October 26, 2009 11:34 AM

Benson- Thanks alot. Did you have to mention Ruth Messinger before lunch....now I am also recalling Margaret Hamilton's most well known role....

That boycott was officially permitted harrassment led by a well known convict who was a violent and dangerous radical. It is a mark on Dinkins failed record that can never be justified or explained away. He will NEVER live it down. The fact that the repeated harrassment by the convicted radical and his seemingly "liesure class" followers, who showed up day after day to protest, I guees due to independent wealth/income of some kind??, was condoned by Dinkins led to the ruination of a hardworking, taxpaying immigrant & his family.

Posted by: Crescent Hill at October 26, 2009 11:35 AM

I think someone has to have some pretty screwed up ideas of what "worst" is- why don't you ask the families of Michael Griffiths and Yusef Hawkins, benson? May I also be offensive enough to point out that both of them were killed in heavily Italian-American neighborhoods, by Italian-Americans (and Irish-American, in Howard Beach). Yet you think a Black boycott of Koreans- where no one died- was worse. Go figure. I would say you are either in serious denial or you suffer from a problem of perception.

THIS IS NYC, NOISE IS EVERYWHERE.

Posted by: brownjokester at October 26, 2009 11:45 AM

"saying they couldn't find our address in their system"

Someone with a southern accent repeatedly told me my address "wasn't in their system" and kept trying to tell me I lived somewhere else.

I said, "no, you are talking about Williamsburg -- I live in Park Slope".

Further conversation revealed that the strange terms "Williamsburg" and "Park Slope" meant nothing to her.

And the worst part was every time I called, whoever I ended up talking to had to go through their little "script" before they would even LISTEN to me for 1 second.

I really wanted to bludgeon "Jose" who kept responding to my comments that had nothing to do with whether or not I had INTERNET CONNECTIVITY with assurances that my modem was working fine. "Jose" also took down my phone number, promised to escalate the issue to his superior, swore that someone would call me back later that day, and disappeared from my life forever.

I find I don't miss him, but I regret not being able to hurt him in some way.

It seems my interactions with Time Warner have poisoned my soul.

Someone needs to update The Banality of Evil.

Just curious Bxgrl, why are you going after just me?? FSRG and Crescent Hill spoke up too.

I have to go out, but would love to continue this Dinkins fest later.

Amazing how the point of view changes depending on who's viewing.

I think the "liesure class" remark is totally out of line, btw. And being driven out of business, as indefensible, and unfair as it is, is a far cry from being driven into the highway to die. I would think that being dead is much worse than being ruined.

I do agree that the draft riots during the Civil War were the worst racial incidents this city ever had.

Rob, it was much more complicated than that. If no one explains, we can discuss in about an hour.

Can we just step away from using terms like "the worst".

How about using one of the worst.

There's always going to be something that another thinks of as worse than what you mentioned. So now instead of people saying "yes, that was terrible." People look at your definitive comment and say, "You think that was the worst? What's wrong with you? This was much worse!".

I'm going to go Google now to find something much worse than what any of you have posted!

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at October 26, 2009 12:09 PM

No, Crescent Hill, you are making a not so subtle jab at a bunch of black people who boycotted everyday, presumably because they didn't work, and were therefore, presumably, unfairly sucking at the public teat. Therefore, in contrast to the hard working grocer, their reasons for boycotting are rendered null and void.

Sorry, saw through that one.

The boycott was much more complicated than that, and no one smelled like roses. I'm not defending some of what happened, but it didn't happen in a vacuum, and there is plenty of blame to go around to cover just about everyone, from the mayor's office on down to the street. However, a fair discussion of the events does not begin and end by pointing the blame on Dinkins, or an activist, whether he has a criminal record or not.

Posted by: Montrose Morris at October 26, 2009 12:09 PM

Michael Pirone, Jason Ladone,James Povinelli, Thomas Farino,Salvatore DeSimone and Harry J. Buonocore were all convicted on either second degree manslaughter or other related charges for the howard Beach incident in 1986, benson. what was that about those who write revisionist history?

Maybe you should look these things up before you talk.

Nicholas Minucci was convicted for the baseball bat attack on 3 young Black men in 2005.

Non- inflammatory? Benson- people with blind spots like yours made my married life hell just walking down the street with my husband. You blow off the deaths of people who simply made the mistake of walking into the wrong neighborhood as not as important as a boycott of Korean grocers? Oh right- I see it now. An overpriced produce vendor is worth so much more than a life. FTR- Crescent hill elaborated on the korean incident- he didn't call the the worst racial incident in the city's recent history. Dinkins bashing is fair game- what you said not only do I disagree with, I thought it was offensive, insensitive and erroneous. Now I'm done and you can revise all you want.

About the most sensible comment I've heard today.

NSR, Kens is right. If you think Time Warner is bad, try Cablevision. I've had both, and they combined to drive me to satellite.

But then again, I don't think the fact that cable TV service sucks is news to too many people.

Ooops! But in 7 or so years, that building owner has never complained or demanded that it be removed.

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at October 26, 2009 12:12 PM

Crescent Hill- when a vendor offends you and overcharges you, you have the right to boycott. And the assumption none of these people worked is a little over the top. Ever think some were retirees, housewives, students, or whatever? Why asssume the worst about them and the best about the Korean grocer?

Posted by: bxgrl at October 26, 2009 12:13 PM

"instead of TRANSFERRING my account when I moved, they closed my old account and opened a new, unrelated one, which resulted in losing the e-mail address I'd been using"

NSR, like Snappy, I abandoned TW for DirecTV years ago. Still, Verizon did the same thing to me when I moved. I lost all of the email addresses that I'd been using for years. And they neglected to credit a payment to my "old" account (when I didn't know I had "old" and "new" accounts), so the "old" account ended up being delinquent, which Verizon then turned over to a collection agency, and I recently found out (when applying for mortgage pre-approval) was reported to all the credit bureaus! So my credit scores are through the roof, but for a $90 Verizon bill that was "subject to collection". Hail bureaucracy!

Ok, everyone chill out a bit. Not saying Dinkins was a great mayor, but before you hold him responsible for crime, look at the linked chart. Murder rate kept going up rapidly throughout the 80s, peaked in '90 (DD's first year in office) and then immediately began declining precipitously, beginning with the final three years of DD's term. Rate of decline looks about the same under DD as under RG and MB. Note that the line on the chart does not change direction much during the RG and MB years, but follows the downward path at more or less the same angle as the final 3 years of DD. Some of that is policing and some is social factors, local and national. But DD did not create the crime wave he inherited, and he did respond to it.

Thanks for the votes of confidence in being able to get the dish installed without damaging the roof DIBS & CGar.

I just got Comcast to renew my new customer Triple Play rates for the 3rd time so I'll wait until they expire again.

For anyone who has tried calling their cable co. to get them to give you lower rates it's worth the phone call. I happened to have seen a segment on the Today Show where they said most cable co.'s were open to renegotiating fees due to the economy. SO one day for shiggles I called and claimed financial hardship. First they offered to reduce my services (getting rid of premium channels) and I said is there any way you could grandfather me into the new customer package rates? She did it right on the spot no questions asked.

I'm saving $48 more or less a month.

Give it a shot.

First: I stand corrected that no one of those convicted in Howard Beach were Italian-Americans. I remember the two principals: Scott Kern and Jon Lester. My mistake, and once again, I stand corrected on the factual point.

Having said that, I take exception to the personal attack and baiting above, by the same usual folks (including those who sit by silently in their complicity).

THL, I appreciate your point, to a degree. However, I clearly stated above that this was just my assertion. Clearly we are talking about opinion, and that is mine. I know that these issues are touchy, but I had thought that they can be discussed. My mistake, I guess. Frankly, I think that if I had taken your advice, the same reaction would have occured.

Bxgrl/ Montrose- Everything I said is true and I stand by it all, Dinkins and his failed record deserve to be bashed. In all honesty I can't recall the details of these other incidents you seem to be quite familiar with. Were they backed by City Hall and condoned by the mayor...as was the daily torture and ruination of the Korean immigrant who was driven to insanity....
Discussing a politically condoned boycott of the late 80's .... Bxgrl references a modern day hoodlum named Nick Manucci?? and how is this related to the boycott discussion, nice try.

I find really loud noises annoying. This argument comes up all the time on here..."if you don't like corn stalks on the sidewalks, this is nyc..." i don't really think it's an actual argument. It basically says, if you don't like something you should leave, instead of stand up for yourself and what you feel is appropriate, or try to work out a compromise. I don't get it, why should I leave just because I don't like something, or just suck it up and deal with it?

Kens I'm smack in the middle of a row with no balconies. I was pretty much resigned to the fact that if I got a dish it would puncture and cause leaks on my 'rubber' roof.

it's nice to know it still might be a viable option. Heck, I could probably pay for the repairs in a few months given how much cheaper the service is.

Posted by: TownhouseLady at October 26, 2009 12:31 PM

Slopefarm: you go F*&(N chill out!!!! We can disagree on this site all we want. Why don't you call out those who always try to make these disagreements ugly???

Montrose: Why don't you come along, as you have done before, and tell me that I'm taking this personally???? Let me hear that shit from you again. Your buddy comes along and tells me that I'm the type of person who was responsible for her failed marriage, and somehow, I'll be told that I just take things too personally.

I sooo tried. Didn't work for me. Cablevision told me to pay up or go screw myself. I tried with 4 different reps and a supervisor and said I would cancel and they told me to go right ahead. Freakin rip-offs. I know if I cancel for like 2 months, they would call me back (as they did with few of my friends) and offer me the triple package again but I can't switch to Direct TV or Dish since my building doesn't allow or has Dish connection and doesn't want antennas on the roof and FIOS doesn't service the building yet so either I have Cablevision or go back to dial up. SUCKS!!!! I am debating of just keeping internet and cancelling cable all together. Maybe I'll read more and actually learn how to write well.

Posted by: Kensingtonian at October 26, 2009 12:37 PM

Rob they didn't ask me about being there another two years. if they had I'd have said yes regardless. What are they going to do force me to stay?

Posted by: TownhouseLady at October 26, 2009 12:37 PM

THL, if you've been with a service company for a while, it's always worth calling them up and threatening to leave them. They all have large customer-retention departments and anyone talking about leaving gets escalated up to them straight away - these are the people that have the power to say yes.

This is the way that I got my telephone (including international calls), Internet and TV package for $35 a month and my mobile plan (200 minutes and 200 texts) for $7 a month.

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at October 26, 2009 12:43 PM

Does anyone know...

When we first moved into our house we screwed the existing cable that was in the house directly to the back of the TV and we got cable channels 2-70.

Within two weeks of living there we then ordered the full cable/phone/internet package deal and have one cable box in the living room but just use the existing cables in the bedrooms where we still get channels 2-70.

Would we still get those channels if we canceled or service completely or would they be blocked? Did they just not get around to blocking the service in the first couple weeks we lived here?

I'm wondering based on Kens current situation. If he canceled could he still get the basic channels by screwing the cable directly into his set?

"it had to be installed on the vertical part of the peripet wall"

THL, dont know if things changed per this migration to digital but in the analog days, cable would need to send someone out to change/block your service at the manhole or something like that outside of your house. for that reason, folks often file the cable feed to be still live - ie as they move into a place. cable companies were being lazy and just hoped the new resident would simply sign up for service vs sending a rep out to block svc than once again to unblock svc when new resident asks for svc

benson - I think you're under a lot of stress at work at the moment and you may be shooting a bit too easily from the hip! When you say the "worst racial incident" in the history of the city, people are immediately thinking - who ended up dead? In that sense it deosn't compare. Parsing through the posts it seems to me what you are saying is - that the city's Response itself was the "worst" for any raical incident, especially considering how the Mayor and the elected officials as well as the public clearly and actively responded to those awful ones mentioned by bxgrl. I think the city's leadership failure with regard to the Korean grocery incident was telling, but I could never say it was the worst incident when at the same time people lose their lives because of their race.

Posted by: TownhouseLady at October 26, 2009 1:34 PM

A coupla points on the Italian thang... I was surprised during that time, while listening to either WLIB or another Black-oriented call-in station, to see what was up, that an apparently elderly woman called in and made the same point about Italian-Americans being the cause of a lot of racial problems, that the commentator immediately shut her down and stated they couldn't allow anything to be said against a race or ethnicity. In fact I was so surprised I still remember it.

Posted by: denton at October 26, 2009 1:34 PM

Ditto;

Well, we'll just have to agree to disagree on this one.

I fully concede that it all depends upon what one's criteria is when making a judgement about what is worst. Moreover, I early on in the debate (while it was still rational) conceded that if the criteria is body count, then the Korean Boycott is certainly not the worst in recent history.

My criteria was that the Korean Boycott was the worst because, out of all the incidents discussed, it was the only one condoned by City Hall (though the Crown Heights riot may fall in that category too). To me, it is a very frightening thing when racially-charged violence as a means of protest is condoned by the government. I respect your right to disagree on that point.

Finally, I want to go back to one other point from the recent ugly dust-up. I was not the first to use superlative terms in that debate. Allow me to reprint Montrose's post from this morning:

"Rudy Guiliani was the most divisive, arrogant, petty, and vindictive mayor this city has had in living memory."

I'll believe that I get a fair shot on this site when some of the advice that I receive is thrown the way of those who have the amen choir.

Actually, I agree with this. In a restored period home, there shouldn't be a visible TV in the living room and dining room areas. Find a room to devote to the TV apart from these. I've had panelled cabinets built into walls in my obsession to be able to cover that big blinking box from the 18th & 19th C furnifhings.

I just noticed the typo in furnishings and decided to keep it as being the more 18th C appropriate style of writing the s in the middle of the word.

fsrg- no one is comparing racial incidents. benson was comparing a boycott and deaths due to racism. Freddy's was a horrible incident, stupid and stoked by anti-white comments by Sharpton, who ignored the Black Church that asked for the eviction in the first place. No one denies racism affects all of us and it works both ways.

The last thing I am going to say on this issue is if protesting racist remarks is "political correctness" then I intend to be as politically correct as I can possibly be. And I will always speak out against ignorant, venal comments. Don't like it benson? Take your own oft-given advice. Don't read my posts.

I sincerely hope that others do not fall into the deflective trap being set up here, I know I won't. The discussion of a Dinkins condoned boycott is being compared to isolated criminal acts/hate crimes which were not comparable ( not politically /officially condoned acts). It is unfortunate that the goal of the original baiting poster is being slowly met and some posts may take a petty turn.....
Discussion of why Dinkins failed the city and it's taxpayers does not equate to media hyped race related murders in NYC in the late 80's. That "telling" boycott and it's notorious activist perpetrators are indefensible. What happened to that store owner was an abomination.

I'll tell you my own theory on the Crown Heights disturbances and the Korean boycott. I have not a shred of evidence to support it, of course. Well, maybe a few shreds, see below. Other than the fact that Dinkins consistently denies telling the NYPD to 'hold back'.

My theory is that the NYPD deliberately and intentionally did nothing so as to embarrass Dinkins, whom as we all know was hated by them.

Can we remember the famous NYPD police riot in which Dinkins was referred to as a 'washerwoman' on the steps of City Hall? Rudy aided and abetted the riot.

From the Washington Post:

"A 600-page report from the state's commissioner of criminal justice detailed numerous instances of breakdowns in communication between police at the scene of the rioting and top brass, mishandling of 911 calls and inexplicable delays in moving to quell violence."

"INEXPLICABLE". Yup.

"Do you have a boot scraper out front"

Dave, one day when I was working in the garden, I unearthed an antique boot scraper (no idea how old) in the form of a Daschund.

Believe it or not, we have a wrought iron CAT boot scraper in Philly, the real antique one where the tail is up and that bolts to the house.

Look at bodhi being back in OT and at full posting mode.

Denton, I actually need the same thing as Snappy. got some very old photos from parents of my grandparents and I want to scan them somewhere and be able to make good quality copies of them. If you find someone who does this sort of thing in BK, I would love to hear it. I might need to get them resized as well so good quality scan job will help me greatly.

The Daschund had originally been bolted down - it was still attached to old masonry when I unearthed it. I didn't reattach it though, and kept it when I sold the house.

G10, on the OT she's either CGar-dog, or CDog for short. Check your email for her name (seriously). Yeah, I get the sad look all the time, and I would do anything to make her feel better, but there's not much I can do, especially if I can't get her to take her pain meds (and I've tried everything).

Is anyone else creeped the EFF out when Tony Dungy is commentating? He is extremely awkward and gives the camera a death stare when he isn't speaking. I'm sure I wouldn't appear anymore comfortable on national television, but it's really distracting.

I love Dungy though - he seems like a really nice, awesome dude.

I guess its ok to bash Dinkins but not ok to bash Guiliani. Guess freedom of speech and the right to an opinion is only allowed to some people.

Crescent Hill- any racial incident is an abomination- don't you agree? And wouldn't you agree that a boycott, as nasty as it was, is not the same as murder? Not to mention, Fred MacKray, a Black teacher broke that boycott. As for Al Sharpton- ugh. I have nothing good to say about him or what he did.

"Montrose: Why don't you come along, as you have done before, and tell me that I'm taking this personally????"

Benson, you are taking this, like you take ALL arguments, personally. For the record, bxgrl was talking about being called names while walking down the street with her black husband, during the Howard Beach incident. How that equates with YOU ruining her marriage is up in your head somewhere, not hers, not mine. She said, and I quote, "people with blindspots like yours made my married life hell..." I don't see where she said "Benson, you are one of those SOBs responsible for......" That would be personal. This is clearly not.

Further more, if you can comment till the cows come home about how awful Dinkins, Obama, and anyone else is, and you do it any chance you get, then I am just as entitled to vent my opinion of Giuliani, or anyone else, as is everyone else here. Only in your mind, where everyone is picking on you, or no one respects your opinion is that a personal attack. Perhaps its because Crescent Hill, fsrg, Legion, and others don't take every difference of opinion as a personal affront, and get all huffy about how awful everyone else on Brownstoner is for not sticking up for you, or complain about some non-existent conspiratorial "amen choir", that I can argue with them, and it's not a big deal. We don't agree. So what. I also stand by my remarks about Giuliani, too.

"This argument comes up all the time on here..."if you don't like corn stalks on the sidewalks, this is nyc..." i don't really think it's an actual argument. It basically says, if you don't like something you should leave, instead of stand up for yourself and what you feel is appropriate, or try to work out a compromise. I don't get it, why should I leave just because I don't like something, or just suck it up and deal with it?"

Quote of the Day to Bodhi.

Take it to an extreme: Someone decides to run a jackhammer all day in the apartment above you for 24 hours a day. Do you tell yourself it's New York, expect to deal with noise?
Or a friend gets mugged or assaulted on the streets. Do you say, "it's New York, it happens"? Of course these things are far worse than helicopter overhead and, if it's the worst thing one has to deal with all day, one must have a pretty great life. But the point is, as Bodhi said, we don't have to just accept it. I've noticed too the copters are now becoming a constant presence in Brooklyn Heights and people have a right to be pissed about it and try to do something to lessen the disturbance.

"

Yes, I agree. He is obviously extremely astute when it comes to football, but he seems so stiff and wooden he creeps me out. Also he is an anti-gay religious type (which not everyone knows) and I don't like that, either. But no doubt he knows his football.

Posted by: East New York at October 26, 2009 2:32 PM

"Can they stabilize it- the photo itself is in great condition."

Now I guess you're talking about restoring and preservation. That's different than taking a photo scanning it and retouching the file, and out-put of restored image.

For restoring and preservation, I know there companies that can attach an acid-free backing and glue to the image to support the original paper, and can recommend ways to store them to reduce further deterioration, I just haven't worked with any, so cannot recommend. [My experience is limited to original artwork - drawings, paintings] You could also try calling Talas, and ask if they recommend anyone. Failing any of that, I can call a book restorer I know and ask him who he might know.

http://www.talas-nyc.com/

Whatever you do, do not use tape on it or glue it to anything. And try to avoid putting it in one of those regular photo albums with the plastic sleeves, the image itself may lose/flake off onto the plastic. Use archival board or paper to store it. That's the limit of my understanding in terms of photography.

Posted by: cobblehiller at October 26, 2009 2:33 PM

DIBS -- it is not a formal house. What the seller was shaping up as an open kitchen/dining room was probably one bedroom and a bathroom. And we hadn't contracted for a period renovation. We had contracted for filed work renovated to code. He just didn't want to do it. He said we should be carrying candles up and down the stairs at night like they did back then, and he was only half kidding. As you know, we ended up in court.

Posted by: benson at October 26, 2009 3:18 PM

gemini....don't try to time the market especially with a 401k...your investment decisions on that should be based upon age and point of retirement.

As for investing in this market, It is hard to tell.. If the government takes away the stimulus , I would jump ship in a second...If they keep the printer flowing , than investing in the market is the way to go... But you have to have a fast finger..

PS - have actually done pretty OK in my 401K thus far and am pretty happy with even my basic knowledge of what and how to invest in it
so am all good!

Gemini;

In addition to the book that CH recommends, I would add a book that is published yearly by Dun and Bradstreet called "Guide to Your Investments". It is meant for the novice, and provides a great perspective on the whole topic.

My last piece of advice: When something sounds too good to be true, it IS too good to be true.

Posted by: benson at October 26, 2009 3:30 PM

I had not ditto, but being the intelligent guy I am just looked it up on Urban Dictionary. I suspect it's just a rest stop on the highway to Gay Town.

DIBS sounds like a mutual fund manager.. Long term investing has killed many investors.. Don't do it with all your money... If you are too busy to invest your own money than get a advisor.. Don't just dump money into a 401k...

Posted by: dittoburg at October 26, 2009 3:40 PM

ok so hubby and I went to check out a condo open house in Park Slope and were told by the brokers that the developers were entertaining ALL offers. The broker is like - "put in any offer and the developer will consider it" -Ps the bldg is more than 50% full
so that being said - should I offer a price that's $150K off what they are asking - it's a 2br in the mid 600K range

Posted by: gemini10 at October 26, 2009 3:40 PM

ok now I get kibitzing.. Holding any investment long term is crazy.Unless you do your homework and think the investment is still a smart one.. 401K's are a good tool for tax purposes and for a good retirement..But mutual funds are not allowed to hedge.. I think in this market it is a must... ASK DIBS WHO RUNS A HEDGE FUND...

Posted by: HOBOKENROCKS at October 26, 2009 3:47 PM

it can't hurt gemini. If you like it. That said, read the thread today on the woes of the new development in Williamsburg. I reiterate my rant...Do Not buy into a new development unless the developer has a long record of sound buildings. I think that generally speaking, condo conversions of old buildings face far fewer potential structural issues. A lot of these issues are things that will not be evident to an inspector like the seals on windows deteriorating, roof leaks that occur after a year or the curtain wall of the building (facade) starting to fall offf or settling issues

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at October 26, 2009 3:48 PM

Why not G10? What do you have to lose? The worst they'll do is refuse your offer and not counter. Happened to me this summer on a greatly overpriced co-op. I made a strong and serious offer, but well below ask (about 20%); the seller, who has never occupied the apartment, wouldn't counter, and it's been sitting on the market for 13 months and counting with no price reduction. I'm patient. I can wait. Or I'll find something else. As I said, you have nothing to lose.

Posted by: more4less at October 26, 2009 3:52 PM

Thanks all! - totally - we want to make sure anything we buy is a sound and smart investment, also oneof the key things we are concerned with is a building's reserves and the overlying mortgage on the bldg...

I agree 1000%.

Posted by: benson at October 26, 2009 4:01 PM

M4L-
the asking price is $679K - we were going to offer $500K but ask for closing costs to be paid in full(as broker said the developer would also be willing to do that as well) AND ask for the parking spot at half of what they were asking

Posted by: gemini10 at October 26, 2009 4:02 PM

Isn't it a bit silly to say that all new construction should be avoided? DIBS gives good advice: just make sure you are dealing with a reputable sponsor/builder.

Posted by: benson at October 26, 2009 4:03 PM

G10- Now is the time to make lowball offers. After you do that, as you noted be concerned with the reserve fund and/or investments of the corporation as well as the existing mortgage note, if any. Be keenly aware of the percentage of your overall shares in the corporation and ask for a copy of the proprietary lease ( Rulebook) to review prior to more serious consideration. All of the above will help in making a well informed, happy cooperator out of you.

Dibs no one can time the market perfectly.. But people can see which direction the market is heading... Especially when you get a double top.. MORE4LESS is 100 percent right.. The only guys that have made money in the stock market over the past 10 years are the guys who work in the companies that do the trading of the market.. Not the investors that pay these idiots.. You ever wonder why these fund managers are not out there playing their own money.. I would have no problem playing other people's money...

i think a lot of people like to hate on new construction merely for the fact that they can't afford it. some people like new things. if someone gave you a pair of roach feces vision goggles and stuck you in an old brownstone, your mind would boggle beyond belief. hundreds of years of roach feces are inside those walls.

Some of the 16th st. condos look weird to me, but at the end of the day, whether or not the bldgs will hold up matters far more than exterior aesthetics.

If we are discussing aesthetics, I really like The Heritage on 2nd St. btwn 4/5 and that Classic Modern bldg on 5th btwn 15/16. I saw some of the apts in the Heritage in person and my only complaint (besides price) was the small size of the living rooms.

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at October 26, 2009 4:29 PM

"Chows are not particularly nice dogs, nor particularly intelligent."

ENY, you're here! At the risk of sounding like an overprotective "parent", my Chow is a particularly sweet and very smart dog. I never knew they had bad reps until after I took mine in from my sister, whom I credit for doing such a great job socializing her. People stop me constantly and can't believe she's a Chow because she's so friendly.

Posted by: CarrollGardened at October 26, 2009 4:33 PM

Gem, I haven't been inside the Classic. The lowest level apt has the grass backyard. I don't like the size of those bedrooms in that place but love that backyard and the front of that building. I'm in love with very angular things!

Snappy, we both like big butts and we both have asthma, so we are bonded, sister. Don't sweat it. However, we must part ways on kickball and Scooby Doo. I'll bet Scooby Doo probably PLAYED kickball!

One of my dreams is to crash a hipster kickball game by snatching the ball (with my HANDS) and bolting off as uncoordinated kickball-playing hipsters chased me in vain (being hipsters, they could never catch a guy like me). Then I'd take the ball, find Scooby Doo, and wing one off that miserable mutt's ASS! That would make my day. I just may do that.

Posted by: East New York at October 26, 2009 4:36 PM

Rob;

The Rigas is a rental building and was designed that way from the start. I agree with you that it is fugly. That building (on President off 4th Ave) was one of the catalysts that sparked the downzoning of PS. Notice how much higher it is then subsequent buildings.

ENY, now that I've said my peace on Chows . . . I freely admit that, except for skiing and other individual sports, I pretty much fall into the category of "completely uncoordinated, sport-ignorant people", LOL. Did I SOUND like I was kidding? Check this out (from Wikipedia):

"The Chow typically shows affection only with those it has bonds to, so new visitors to the home should not press their physical attention upon the resident Chow as it will not immediately accept strangers in the same manner as it does members of its own pack. Inexperienced dog owners should beware of how Chow Chows encounter those it perceives as strangers; their notoriety is so established that many homeowner's insurance companies will not cover dogs from this breed."

AND

"They rank 76th in Stanley Coren's The Intelligence of Dogs, being of the lowest degree of working/obedience intelligence."

I'll bet Scooby Doo is actually a Chow. A Chow who plays kickball!

"DIBS sounds like a mutual fund manager.. Long term investing has killed many investors.. Don't do it with all your money... If you are too busy to invest your own money than get a advisor.. Don't just dump money into a 401k..."

HR, I usually agree with you, but not today. First thing, what adviser? Pls tell me how many advisers got their clients in cash somewhere around 10/8/2007? How many avoided the NASDAQ bubble? How many did both?

You may be good at short-term trading but for the vast majority of people that's a fools game.

Hardly any 401ks give you good options anyway. You can't trade individual stocks, buy options, short, or any of that good stuff. And in fact most people don't want to do that and can't do that.

Long term investing will still work if you use the proper asset allocation. While the 10 year return on equities is still around zero, if you had 30% or more in bonds like most people should, you'll be ahead of the game today.

Speaking of advisers, the best advice I can give is to avoid them like the plague. Put the equities portion of your 401k in an S&P index fund. You gonna argue with me on that???

Last but not least, whenever you leave a job, ALWAYS take your 401k with you and roll it over into an acct with Fidelity, Schwab, etc, where you can play with some or all of the money if you see fit.

I was just kidding about Chows, really. I pretty much like all dogs (except Scooby Doo). Heather, that's a good point about the food thing....never thought of it that way. However, French bulldogs have an air of class and self-confidence that has never been attached to the Chow, and in addition are truly friendly dogs. Not so for Mr. Chow.

Posted by: East New York at October 26, 2009 4:56 PM

ENY, not a problem. I can't argue with their bad reps. I can only say my Chow defies the breed in terms of both personality and intelligence. That line about "not immediately accepting strangers" totally does NOT apply to her. She can't pass someone on the sidewalk without doing a U-turn and trying to go meet them, and then all she does is wag her tail and try and jump up on the person and lick their face with her black tongue. I personally think it all depends on how a dog - any dog - is socialized, though there are clearly more typical breed-specific characteristics.

ENY, you AntiScooby-ite! LOL

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at October 26, 2009 4:59 PM

Most people are afraid of Akitas. I had one when I lived in Chicago. He weighed in at around 140 lbs. Lots of people were afraid of him to a certain extent. He was however great at his main job when we were walking , which was to get to meet new people, mainly guys!!!

When I moved to NYC there was another big one near me on East 54th Street. I came around the corner one morning and ran into him being walked and he jumped on me with paws over my shoulder and began licking. Had I not had an Akita myself I think I would have freaked. They are not always so good with other dogs though.

"bubble-butt investment bankers who get together every spring and try to play in softball leagues?"

I'm surprised at you, DH. As a knowledgeable sports fan, you know full well that even the fattest, most bubble-butt guy is capable of being an EXCELLENT baseball/softball player (Kirby Puckett....Rick Reuschel...David Wells...I could go on). The point is softball takes some athletic skill. At the least you have to have enough hand-eye coordination to hit a softball - not easy at any time. KICKBALL only requires you to do kick a (comparatively) huge ball with your foot - you'd have to be a f-kng moron not to be able to do that! Sorry, I'm not buying. Unless you are a kid, you look like a complete fool playing kickball!

Isn't it cruel to keep chows where it's hot? Like NYC in the summer? I hear they are cold weather dogs. Maybe that's why they walk around looking pissed all the time.

Pete, I finally figured out the show I had confused with "Outrage", the one with the hot guy on the posters all over the subway. It's "White Collar", which premiered on USA on Friday.

Very true ENY - but have you ever partaken/watched one of these games? Its an elaborate scheme to leave work early one day a week - fuck around for a few hours, and drink at Brother Jimmy's (east or west side) on the company dime.

I'd rather see people take a non-serious sport seriously then a bunch of douchebags fuck around playing a real sport!!

I'd like to see corporate MMA leagues started though. there's a few old bosses i'd like to hit with a sagat-style flying knee.

I happen to agree w/you. Basketball is a lame sport that was invented solely because some Canadian guy got bored.

Yes, gemini...I posted on here about Hachiko a year or so ago....The Wikipedia story about him is very thorough. A really amazing and heart warming story.

Did you know that he is in some museum now in Tokyo, stuffed!!!

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at October 26, 2009 5:12 PM

Dave, your experience with your Akita (and the one you ran into on the street) sounds similar to mine with the Chow. She doesn't like other dogs much; she mostly ignores them - small dogs yapping and jumping at her leave her puzzled, and if large dogs get in her face or sniff too closely, the worst she'll do is growl.

Denton, I have a great groomer, who shaves her undercoat in warm weather but leaves her top layer of fur, so she's not too hot but still looks like a Chow.

Posted by: CarrollGardened at October 26, 2009 5:12 PM

The story of Hachiko made me cry when I first saw it. I literally sobbed.

Animals are incredible.

Many different coats. Mine was black/grey and white. Hachiko was white. Most in the US are brown and brown white.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at October 26, 2009 5:17 PM

bxgirl, the names and logo won't matter, as long as they are hand-embroidered on organic cotton shirts, in Brooklyn, by legal residents

"Maybe we need a brownstoner sports team"

bxgrl, please see my 10:41 post. We're assembling a Brownstoner kickball team. ENY volunteered to be team captain, and our mascot will be a Chow.

Damn it ENY - I thought I'd get you all angered up on that one

Posted by: dittoburg at October 26, 2009 5:17 PM

It's 40 weeks Rob. So it really works out to 10 months. Think of it this way you have to get to the END of the ninth month.

Since, THL brought up the subject of stupid things done wrt food, I'll admit that on Saturday (before i started drinking) I sliced the tip of my finger off with the mandoline. It bled for a good hour and a half!!!!!

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at October 26, 2009 5:22 PM

Dibs - I saw a piece on TV about Hachiko and the dog they were using was red - sorta like a Shiba-inu color

ahhh Shibuya!

"Very true ENY - but have you ever partaken/watched one of these games? Its an elaborate scheme to leave work early one day a week - fuck around for a few hours, and drink at Brother Jimmy's (east or west side) on the company dime."

I'm sure you're right DH. That definitely fits the investment guy paradigm. However the last company softball team I was on was based in Jersey (I was working in Secaucus) and those guys weren't fooling around. Like me, they all took their softball pretty seriously and we had some real battles. One guy almost got thrown out of a game! But you're right - for a lot of guys softball is merely an excuse to get tanked. And corporate MMA is a TERRIFIC idea!

Posted by: East New York at October 26, 2009 5:23 PM

Owww, Dave! That's why I don't trust myself with a mandoline. I barely trust myself with knives and Cuisinart blades. You don't need stitches?

Posted by: CarrollGardened at October 26, 2009 5:25 PM

Shibuya, yes. For any of you who have never been to Tokyo, think of the lower east side all consisting of 10 story high rises with bars on EVERY floor and brighter than Ginza.!!!!

CGar- get the kind with the guide that holds the food. This way no fingers lost.

Posted by: TownhouseLady at October 26, 2009 5:30 PM

The chow can be the team mascot but the logo has to be a cat. If we make the cat the mascot we run the risk of the logo eating the mascot. Can the uniforms be tight in the bubble butt? Team colors? Black, white and red (works on so many level) ;)

And C Gar- you get to dress up in the chow suit to do the cheerleading section.

Posted by: bxgrl at October 26, 2009 5:30 PM

I like Dino. I never watched Scooby Do and the guy looks like a hipster now that I think of it.

"Hahah ENY - something tells me you're super competitive no matter what you engage in!"

Pretty much. I just can't help it. My wife, who is from Jamaica (and also lived in South Florida, two undeniably laid-back places) constantly complains about it.
