Bed Stuy house tour was great. Very nice to see that there's more than one way to restore and renovate a brownstone. Saw Amzi, too, and met his lovely mother.

Snappy, Cgar, i only just got your texts yesterday. I was home doing nuttin on saturday night when you guys texted me but i had lost my phone the night before, along with my faux pod, fur coat, pony head, and tarot cards at a bar in williamsburg. union pool to be exact. i totally do not even remember being there, but whatever. at 530 am someone texted a bunch of people in my contact list saying lost phone at union pool. my dumb ass thought it was union hall so i went there twice saying someone texted from there on my phone saying it was there and they were like sorry no one left a phone here. so all of saturday and sunday morning i was completely perplexed until i got this message..( Hey I have also sent you this message at Facebook and perhaps that person you talked to at union pool didn't know that your phone was still in your jacket and didn't check there, leopard skin looking jacket, that and other stuff that the bartender told me are still in union pool...pick it up asap since they're not really responsible for it.) and as i was reading union i had the card from union hall and was like im such a moron.
on a weirder note i had the craziest dream last night im trying to figure out what it means. mary kate and ashley olson's MOM called me. i was like who is this? and she says it's judy. (no clue if that's there mom's name but that's the name she gave) and she was like, i have tons of their clothes to donate to you. i was like great ill be right there to pick it. there were bags and bags full of clothes and nothing really fit me but there 100 dollar bills in all the pockets!!!

denton, I just emailed you.
Good morning, all.

DH, I know the bartender dude! ha ha ha. BTW, there is no bar in Tatiana so that was totally made up but the outside and the inside filming when they are all sitting behind a table was at the restaurant. There is also no alley behind the restuarant so that was filmed somewhere else.
Also, I am not a fan of curb but last night's episode was pretty funny.
Posted by: Kensingtonian at October 19, 2009 9:44 AM
Haha Rob - shocking the bartenders at Union Pool did that. They are typically douchebags.

QUESTION RELATED TO UNION HALL NIGHT:
Why did I text "Artisan" to myself??? Who asked about it and what does it mean??? I didn't think I had that much to drink to forget the meaning of a text.
PHILLIES WIN TOO

The Yankees bore me, and I was a big fan growing up. Anytime they need someone, they just write a ten million dollar check. Or fifty million. You turn on the TV, don't even recognize half the players from one day to the next. Between steroids, luxury boxes, cable charges, it all makes me just yawn.
I did get in one of those luxury boxes a few weeks ago and did a nice stitched panorama...

when i went in yesterday there was only one bartender and one person who also i think worked there, they were actually pretty nice. it's funny cuz i offered the person who found it a 10 dollar reward. they said they knew who was texting people from my phone about the lost stuff, and the guy goes "oh she doesnt need a reward she's going back to serbia tomorrow" serbia or some country that sounds like it.. haha whatever that meant!

I enjoyed the Bed Stuy House tour, as well. I knew one of the homeowners, and it was good to see her and her family, whom I haven't seen in years. She did some amazing work in her house since the last time I saw it. I thought it was interesting that so many of the houses are out past Stuyvesant on blocks that even 3 years ago on this blog were automatically written off as being in the hinterland. Most of the houses this year were in Stuyvesant Heights and beyond. It was a nice long walk on a chilly day. Kudos to the Brownstoners of Bed Stuy for another good tour. 31 years is a long time, so it's a good thing Bed Stuy is so huge. There were some repeats, and also some interesting new places.

While I'm not a huge fan of baseball. I do occasionally watch it if my partner or friends are. I watched the last half of Saturday's game.
When the Japanese (sorry don't know his name) Yankee player hit the ball and ran to first base, they then replaced him with someone else so he can run. That's when I said, this game (sport) is bullshit!!
so one guy hits the ball and another (faster) guy comes in to do the running???
If you can't do everything that the sport you're in demands, and getting paid millions of dollars doing, then why bother?!?!?
Can't these guys train to run also? Geez, Pathetic!
Oh, and a lot of them should lose some weight....chubby doesn't make an athlete.

"If you can't do everything that the sport you're in demands, and getting paid millions of dollars doing, then why bother?!?!?"
It was the end of the game - this frequently happens at the end of games when teams are trying to manufacture a run to win. Hideki Matsui is a good hitter, but slow around the bases. The trade off is the guy they put in is fast, but not exactly a threat at the plate. So it's a fair tradeoff.
Posted by: dirty_hipster at October 19, 2009 10:37 AM
*rob*, I thought you were on the 3rd floor? I just remember buzzing and buzzing your apartment last time, but none of the names looked familiar and didn't really want to wake all your neighbors. If we'd known you were on the 1st floor, we would've just broken in.

"The guy from RTH(rent to high) was right on message. When asked what he could offer NYrs, he just said "rent to damn high"."
I signed his petition once back in like 05 or 06 when I saw him outside the junction on Nostrand and Flatbush. He had a bullhorn and was yelling, "Rent is too damn high!" as he sat behind a card table. Seems like a broad-based issue people could really rally behind! If I were a candidate, I would steal that message.

Posted by: Montrose Morris at October 19, 2009 10:53 AM
brown, while I may not like things about it, I understand the game. Players can be pulled out and replaced with other players for various reasons (back in the day there were never even relief pitchers). The manager is taking a calculated risk with a pinch-runner, since the original player, once pulled, cannot come back in the game. If a pinch-runner is inserted for a good hitter like Matsui, Matsui is out for the duration. So if somehow the other team ties the game, the mamager has the services of a light-hitting pinchrunner instead of Matsui. Part of the chessboard strategy that goes on in any sport, and particularly baseball.

2 serious questions....
1. Do you smarty folks think that price of oil will go over 100 bucks a barrel this winter? I want to hear opinions since winter seems like its going to be a cold one and our co-op is spending shit load on heating costs.
2. Are prices in BK Home Depot and Manhattan HD same for basic items such as masks, nails, electrical testers, wiring and such? I work half a block from 23rd street HD and if it's more expensive, I'll just to a BK one.
Posted by: Kensingtonian at October 19, 2009 11:00 AM
Ok, so now I'm regretting not tossing my tenants' copy of the voting guide. That RTH guy might be onto something (ssshhhhh!).
Meanwhile, it's gonna take a lot for the Knicks to win back my heart. Isaiah managing and coaching the team and making one stupid trade after another and pretending he had a plan was bad enough. But how could any self-respecting corporation of that magnitude doing business in NYC botch its legal affairs so badly? Any coach who called a play as wrongheaded as letting the Anucha Brown Sanders case go to trial without settlement would be fired before the first post-game interview and fined to boot. That bad is on ownership. And as for salary cap management, couldn't they find a decent accountant in NY? I've lost so much respect for what's left of that franchise. Going to a 12-step meeting and saying "Hi, I'm NYK and I've been Isaiah free for 14 months" ain't enough for me. It's gonna take a while.
Posted by: slopefarm at October 19, 2009 11:05 AM
Kens, does the fuel oil supplier offer commercial customers the ability to prepurchase for the heating season?? I can do this, and did do it, for oil for the P-Town house and Bucks County.
You prepurchase oil at current price plus a small premium and lock in the cost. Typically if it goes down you still get the benefit. But this may only be a residential thing. Not sure if my Brooklyn neighbors do it. I have gas here.
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at October 19, 2009 11:07 AM
I'd vote for oil staying under $90 a bbl for the next few months. But no one knows. Israel drops a few bombs on Iran all bets are off. You can easily hedge using UCO or other ETFs, but I don't think a coop board should mess around like that...

Need more computer advice.
We recently discussed buying new computers and the release of Windows 7.
Some techie in my family suggested waiting a few months after the October 22 release date to be sure Microsoft has worked out all the kinks.
Do people agree with this?
Posted by: Biff Champion at October 19, 2009 11:09 AM
Generally I would agree with that Biff. Better yet, buy a Mac. It has all the Microsoft software you will need for $99 additional.
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at October 19, 2009 11:10 AM
"Some techie in my family suggested waiting a few months after the October 22 release date to be sure Microsoft has worked out all the kinks."
Yes, Biff. Also my techie brother's recommendation.

I second a Mac Biff
and it will match your converse.
Posted by: dirty_hipster at October 19, 2009 11:12 AM
hey biff, that's a pretty conservative strategy, but W7 has been pretty well beta tested. If you elect to wait, the time to buy would be when the first Service Pack (SP) is released.
I wouldn't wait personally, remember Windows updates itself automatically on a weekly basis. Not likely to be so bad that you'll have a horrible experience on a new laptop with a modest amount of peripherals.

Posted by: dirty_hipster at October 19, 2009 11:15 AM

Yeah - macs are more expensive but they effin WORK!!
Posted by: dirty_hipster at October 19, 2009 11:16 AM
Kens, HD is usually pretty competitive on the bigger more expensive items and not so on the smaller items. you might have better pricing getting your list of stuff at a local hardware store but then you're spending the coop's dime so is it worth it not to go to HD near you
Posted by: more4less at October 19, 2009 11:17 AM
Biff- agreed. Although the reviews from the tech mags nad reviewers have been great. It's still always better to wait a bit.
MM- I cry where are the granite countertops, all stainless steel appliances and tub spa? Where is my free lunch???? Until then Neither I nor my cats will deign to pay rent on our domicile. Instead we shall be picketing outside. Should my guy win your life is so over :-)

"ENY, what happened to Bernie Williams?"
What kind of dumb question is that? What do you mean what happened to Bernie Williams? He's retired. He won four world championships while with the Yankees. He's now a successful musician. Why don't you Google him?
Yeah, the Giants got whupped. The Saints had a bye week to prepare and were ready to go off. The Giants just didn't play well. But it's a long season, and we'll see how well the Saints do when they have to play in some snow and cold. It's a bit early to declare a "best team int he NFL," although the Saints are certainly one of the top contenders, no question.
Hey Dave, how did McMabb do yesterday? At least the Giants can beat Oakland!
Posted by: East New York at October 19, 2009 11:19 AM
PCs work too, DH. The whole world runs on them, outside of the arts. However I'd agree with your first para, which is why Biff should do it now. He won't have to wait for 6 months.
Posted by: denton at October 19, 2009 11:21 AM
DH, do think Saints is better than Indy but Indy is only team who can debate it. Vikes might be undefeated but they don't look good enough to debate it.
Posted by: more4less at October 19, 2009 11:22 AM
ENY, you know the Yankees treated him like sh*t.
Posted by: denton at October 19, 2009 11:22 AM
Thanks so much everyone for the computer advice. I think I'll wait until early January, all things considered, given I do still have a functioning desktop at home.
Follow-up: can one buy a Mac even if one is not prepared to wear tight jeans, a scarf, knit cap and thick black framed glasses while sitting in a coffee shop for at least 10 hours each weekend pretending to be doing something important on it?
Posted by: Biff Champion at October 19, 2009 11:24 AM
denton- I have a pc and have no problems with anything in the arts. It's what I do. I wanted a mac but it was too expensive to get the one I needed. and I love pcs anyway. But I always get the snob thing- oh, you're a graphic artist and you USE PC??? Yep- the end result is the real test, not the hardware.

"ENY, you know the Yankees treated him like sh*t. "
Yeah. They paid him $87 million over six years in his last contract. Then they wouldn't re-sign him at the end of the contract, asking him to work out if he wanted to stay on the team. He didn't want to do that, and stayed home. It didn't stop them from having him come back to the stadium for special events and the Yanks even did a "Centerstage" interview and a special on Bernie's music and life after baseball. He seemed to be pretty happy throughout. Yeah they really treated him like sh*t. Too bad the Yanks didn't treat Bernie as well as the Red Sox treated Nomar Garciaparra. Or the Mets treated Tom Seaver.

ENY, to be fair, Yanks (albeit treated Bernie Well) didn't give Bernie same respect as other core players. Bernie had to threaten signing Red Sox offer before Yanks gave him that contract

mac viruses are rare because they have a much smaller share of the market. As it gets more popular, hackers will begin writing more mac viruses. But they are out there. Mac users are also vulnerable to spy and malware if it's web based.

Well, now what?

Mac vs. PC is sort of like other "issues" we've discussed. Each of us is comfortable w/ what he's "always used" & no minds are going to be changed by discussion. (See AY thread above.)

bx,
At least you guys aren't resorting to ad hominems and such. Aggressive arguing on both sides, but you are behaving.
Sometimes you guys remind me of Ackroyd and Curtain on SNL Weekend Update doing Point/Counterpoint.

Hello AWAY. Enjoyed what, and what food was great where?? And which PLUSA?? My God, I'm more confused than usual.
Posted by: CarrollGardened at October 19, 2009 12:06 PM
That's true M4L. But Bernie wound up with the Yanks in the end, correct? He talked about the entire episode in his "Centerstage" interview. Hey, I didn't say there weren't bumps in the road. But if Bernie felt so disrespected, how come he's come back to the Yankee "family?" In fact, Bernie's number will be retired in Monument Park eventually. Bank on it! It's nothing like Nomar and the Red Sox. Nomar had Jeter-like status as a Red Sox, and they basically kicked him out of town!

Posted by: Asian Women at Y at October 19, 2009 12:10 PM
I don't know about that arkady - I'm sure there are others like me who have one type at work and the other at home.
I gave up on a personal PCs when time came to buy a new one because of viruses, malware etc etc, haven't had a single problem in 3 years with the Mac and i don't do anything regarding securirty. As for work, we use PCs and they are fine - but we've got an IT team keeping them fine and updating etc. All that costs money. When one calculates a Mac for home use is expensive, one should take into account any security measures and software also needed to be purchased.
Posted by: dittoburg at October 19, 2009 12:10 PM
slopefarm- lets be clear- I don't use ad hominem atacks. I respond to how someone treats me. I'll attack an issue or an argument, not the person- unless that person attacks me first. I'm not the one who made it personal with MM, BRG and THL.
Posted by: bxgrl at October 19, 2009 12:10 PM
Thanks for the advice guys! I am going to look into fixed prices for the heating costs as we were given that option last winter when oil went up to 147 per barrel.
M4L, my HD advice was for me and not co-op but thanks. I'll stick to the Brooklyn one and support local micro-economy.

Is there a way to search for rentals on Property Shark?
Posted by: dirty_hipster at October 19, 2009 12:14 PM
ditto- I've worked on both and since I love computers, my idea of happiness is to have both kinds and a Linux to boot. I haven't had a problem with pcs because I am a nutjob when it comes to security- I'm sure at some point I will eat those words, but most people get viruses because they get careless, especially with email. Corporate computers are so complicated and sophisiticated, and the needs are so great, I wonder if they were mac would the situation be any easier?

HOBOKEN...if the market goes down 3-10%, when will you get back in?? If it goes up after that (you think??) you're not likely to catch the bottom anyway and you will be buying at higher prices.

DIBS i see where you are coming from but if I held last year I would have gotten killed.. I use the technicals to make my buys.. The friday that we closed around 1025 was a good day to buy because if I recall we rallied at the end of the day to close just above the 50 day avg.. I will be looking for a similar sign.. I really want close to a 10 percent correction to jump in.. I must admit I have missed some of the upside... Not because of my trading technique but because I took a couple of months off to have some fun with the family..

What happened last year is incomparable to a 3-10% correction. No one times the latter perfectly.

Mac forums are to teach users new things. The lines at Mac stores are because people are buying things.
There are no pop ups, no viruses bothering Mac users. I know because I'm posting on my laptop right now as my office desktop has been overrun with viruses.

Ditto, I pay 16 bucks a month but I had a membership for like 10 years. First 3 years I paid like 40-50 a month and there after I get yearly renewals for $192 a year. It's a fixed rate every year so far. They have an option to raise it but haven't done so far.

cgups, you seem confused. There are people with some money who have made it themselves. There are people with some money who have inherited it. And no doubt many are a mix of the two.
People with no money like rob, or people who have made it all themselves, tend to be more critical of inherited money.
Ironically, it is conservatives who are always claiming AMerica is a meritocracy. Yet they're the ones always whining about 'death taxes'.

my point is you can blame the world for being born poor instead of to a rich family, or for being born ugly instead of beautiful, but plenty of people who come into money are perfectly decent people who work hard and are not spoiled brat monsters ruining new york for all. one of the hardest working guys i know comes from crazy money and you'd never know it. i just think it gets tired for people to hate on the idea of inheritance when it's part of people's motivation for saving and preserving things to pass on to the next generation. i mean give me a break, i don't think someone living in the middle of park slope qualifies as indigent quite like a family living in a shelter or people getting their only hot meals from a soup kitchen.

or rather it's about as useful to blame the world for being born poor instead of rich or being born ugly instead of beautiful, but these are things that we need to accept. to spend your like fighting it it to waste your life. plenty of poor people end up doing great things with their life and better society with little to no fanfare and no financial gain because they didn't sit on their ass whining about it.

Yeah, ditto, it was pretty gross. 1/2 eaten sandwiches, leftover meals, you name it.

ditto, you're right. Nevertheless it is entirely possible to go without if you use some common sense. Anyway part of it's kinda the tweaker esthetic that if you grew up with PCs become fun. Ya know, replacing your own CPU, flashing your BIOS, adding a hard drive or two... and yes, comparing anti-virus software.
Arkady, it's a simple anti-virus/malware scanner. Right now, it's the best. Altho I run the full version of AVG it pickup up a coupla things, and it's also bailed me out at work where some of my good employees have gotten infected.

That may be the case, CG ups, but there are plenty of us who live paycheck to paycheck (or unemployment check to unemployment check). Personally I don't think money makes you better or worse as a human being. I think it does make you more secure and gives you the freedom to do things poorer people can't. I know quite a few people with money who I would trust with my life. Same with some poor folk. But this is brownstoner, after all. You know we're gonna make blanket statements and stereotype wherever possible :-)

the 50's leave it to beaver idea of americana is no longer a reality (maybe it never existed), and so has the american dream evolved. the wealth gap is larger than ever but there is still huge opportunity in this country via education and plain old hard work. it's always been hard to rise into the next socioeconomic class, but in a way there is constant progress/evolution.

very true. the american dream can and does exist in the form of reality tv show tho. one can become rich simply by being themselves, or playing on on tv. it does always irk my man buttons when you find out that some reality tv contestants dont NEED the million dollars and stealing a spot away from someone who does need it.

hard work is necessary - but it has to be to the right end if what you want in life is to earn a lot (often at the expense of other things).
Plenty of hard work leads to a small pay check at the end of the week, month after month and year after year. One has to be careful when just saying "hard work", the converse being the implication that you're poor because you don't work hard, which is often completely false.

I also agree. Cleverness, hard work, tenacity and innovative ideas will deliver you to the promised land. Of course, not everyone is going to go the "Super Bowl" of success, but it's more likely to happen for the average person here in the U.S. than in any other country. For an example, look no farther than Mr. Brownstoner' blog. He created something where nothing (of its type) previously existed.

have the balls to be direct. nobody (i certainly was not) implying that everyone has the same opportunities. the point is that there is opportunity, people seize it and do manage to succeed. there are people that had amazingly difficult circumstances growing up and have grown to be successful (and well adjusted) people. many of the kids at the school i work with are from families below the poverty line. some of them move on to "just get by" in life. some of them have done really well. one of my students is on his way to beomcing a teacher via a rockefeller fellowship. another one is becoming a nurse and the first college graduate in her family. or some of them are even upper middle class white kids that live in brooklyn and rise to the top of their field. who knows, there may even be hope for you.

The American Dream is definitely there but two things: it is extremely easy to get sidetracked. I could more or less sleepwalk through life and end up ok, I had many advantages. And second, the aspirational aspect of the american Dream is not very strong for native-born americans I don't think.

All a question of definitions, and of what period to which compare. Social mobility is still very possible but likely to come by different means. Harder to just join one giant company at the bottom rung and spend one's entire working life there any more. It also feels like social mobility works both ways more now - easier to start off middle class and end up poor. Not sure if that's anything that requires a big change in social policy though.
The cost of education here is a big hurdle.
(From what I recall re brownstoner posters there is not a big difference between the educational background of the allegedly wealthy and the allegedly poorer. Most went to pretty good colleges).

Believe it or not, I worked my way through college and put myself through grad school. Neither one was Ivy League but grad school was Northwestern. Yes, it was a lot less expensive back then and so too were houses. The latter were much more affordable as a % of income than they are today.
Being older, I just got an earlier start that's all.

It also depends on how you define success in your world. For some success is having enough money to pay the bills and hang out with their buddies. Others need much more in their life in order to feel like they've accomplished something.
Everyone's needs vary.

Ha ha, 100% true. I don't work hard enough, that's why you'll never see me bitch about not making enough money :o). I got a sweet offer to go back to the dark side (corporate law) about a couple of weeks ago but I would definitely give up posting on brownstoner and be miserable at work but I would me making more money. I denied the offer. I love my job and that's partially why I am willing to live on a smaller income but if I had a family to support or felt like I need more money to pursue hobbies/interests or whatever, I would look for a better paying opportunity.
Don't even get me started on American Dream. I will debate till I turn blue. As M4L once said, immigrants just see too many opportunities in this country and the notion of self entitlement just astounds us sometimes.

*sitting mouth agape in complete shock*
I'd just cook it up and then lay the strips out on a cutting board and slice them into long strips or into little bits.
Really you could wrap anything in it, chicken strips, veggies but without melted cheese to bind it together I don't know how successful it'd be. Unless you rolled them and then packet tightly into a pan. You'd have to pour sauce of some sort over it so that the pasta didn't dry out when you baked it.

Maybe this is a stupid question but: Do I need to cook the eggplant, squash, zucchini, etc. before layering it into the lasagna?
it's not going to burn or get crispy when I bake it cause there's no cheese?

Posted by: Joe from Brooklyn at October 19, 2009 3:02 PM
Rob,
When I was in college I'd swipe extra everything. Ketchup packets, salt, pepper, sugar, napkins you name it. When I'd cook I'd season the food with all my freebie packets of soy sauce hot sauce etc. I also swiped rolls of toilet paper when I'd visit my friends that still lived in the dorms.
I figure if I could save $2 by not buying ketchup that was one more 40oz. for the weekend.

Pete, as I've ranted on now for well over a year, brownstones are not coming down to what many would consider "cheap."
I might have sunk $1.2MM into a place in Boerum Hill had in been available when i first started looking in early 2007 but there was nothing available a those prices that didn't need work.
Now things are different and it still seems that nothing is really avaialable at those prices and in this environment I would not be willing to spend that amount of money given the risks to the economy that this may be a prolonged timeperiod of low returns, the huge move in the market from march notwithstanding.
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at October 19, 2009 3:05 PM
BJ- If you cut the veggies thin enough then there's no need to cook them. You should put sauce in the bottom of them pan and also pour it over the noodles. If you're rolling a lot of veggies in the noodles I'd also put some sauce in the roll itself. The sauce will bake everything without letting the noodles dry out.
Posted by: TownhouseLady at October 19, 2009 3:05 PM
BJ, I take the easy shots if I can.
Smegma it is then.
Posted by: dittoburg at October 19, 2009 3:05 PM

hahhah thl. one ghetto thing i am not proud of that i used to do, mostly just in college but i did it for a few years afterwards, was going around to those big clothing drop off bins and literally fishing for bags of clothes. i guess one could look at it as stealing from the poor, but i figured i was poor so it evened out.? i wish they had those bins in nyc. the last time i saw one was a very very very long time in chelsea. did they do away with them? the ones i used to raid were usually located in jersey mall parking lots. my friend used to drive us in the middle of the night and we'd come back with a whole new wardrobe!

Dave, aren't a lot of Asian-Americans lactose intolerant? I only know this because I was lactose intolerant for some time and my doctor told me that it's pretty common in Asian cultures and with some eastern europeans because they don't consume large dairy amounts at homeland and then come here and start consuming pizza, cereals, etc. growing up and develop lactose intolerance. Sometime the body adjust (Like in my case) and sometimes it doesn't.

generally yes, cook the vegetables 1st... as in if making a eggplant parm you fry the eggplant 1st b4 bake in casserole.
Tofu won't kill you and will absorb the flavor of the sauce..slice like you were slicing mozzerella. If someone served it to you , you wouldnt even know it.(of course I like plain greek yogurt...none of the flavored junk in the dairy case).

So glad to hear so many still believe in the American Dream- I had gotten embarrassed to tell people that anymore. Although I am probably in the middle becoming poorer class, I have to say I believe I can turn things around and am working on stuff to do so. For some of us life happens in a big bad way and knocks you off course. It may never work out for me, but in this country I still believe I have a chance at it.

The lactose intolerance and diabetes thing has more to do with allergies that come from not getting enough REAL dairy and instead being exposed to thing like formula which is basically corn syrup and water, it increases your chances of allergies, obesity and diabetes like 10 times.

Slope, they do but definitely not as much as in American culture. I got it pretty bad when I came here. I could eat hard dairy like cheeses but the minute I would have milk with cereal, I had the worst stomach aches. It got really bad at one point that I couldn't even put a little milk in my coffee. The GI that I went to back then (this was about 10 years ago) told me that it was common amonst Eastern Europeans and Asians. Told me that I will adjust and gave me lactaid pills just in case. It took about 5 years or so but I am much better. I still avoid milk in pure form like with cereal or just a glass of milk. That's just too dangerous for me but I can tolerate pretty much everything else.
Posted by: Kensingtonian at October 19, 2009 3:23 PM
Lactose intolerance is very real in many Mediterranean people & Asians. It's scaled from 1 to 100 - average intolerance is 50. One friend of mine has a 2 & can't even have French bread made w/ a TB of milk.
I can't eat (or think about) smegma w/o getting a rash.

Arkady, I am not sure of the names as I always try a couple and point to the one I like and pick up a can or small tray. Beluga is a red one correct? I get the red usually for about 16-25 per lb depending where it's coming from or how good it is. Is Osetra the black caviar? Not sure what Sevruga is?. I can go to the store and check for you for sure but I am about 95 percent positive I can get it cheaper at a Russian market than any distributer or store that you may be getting it in (unless they are Russians as well).

the regular bahn mi at hanco's is awesome. though i have to say, i like baoguette just a smidge better bc of the sloppy bahn mi, mmmmm delicious. it's worth a trip into the hellhole of grammercy/murray hill for that sandiwch. mmmmm. and the sloppy bahn mi is only $7, the regular pork and pate bahn mi is $5 (i think about the same price as hanco).

THL, I haven't had tuna in a long time because the second I break out the can opener, Pia is right there howling at the top of her lungs and climbing my leg to get at it. I'm a big ole sucker.

"What about peanut butter? Tuna? Collard greens? Potatoes? LUNCH MEAT!!!???"
Snaps - Jif (sometimes creamy, sometimes crunchy); Bumble Bee (all white in water); Potatoes (any and every way possible); Lunch Meat (Hebrew National salami, pepperoni, genoa)
*rob* - I could eat Hellman's out of the jar (though I gather you OD'd on it)

ugh joe don't get me started on those stupid 10 dollar bags of white people cheese doodles that are essentially the SAME thing as good old Wise only a fool buys their snackfoods at organic grocery stores!
hmm i was curious
they really ARE from Wise! OMFG look at the Name of the family that Invented Cheez Doodles LO!L
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Jump to: navigation, search
Cheez Doodles are a cheese-flavored corn snack produced by Wise Foods, Inc. that are similar to Frito-Lay's Cheetos, which debuted several years after Frito-Lay's snack in the 1950's. Originally manufactured by the Yohigh family, and brokered by Dave Birdie, it became the prevalent cheese puff in the East Coast. In the mid 60's the company was acquire by Borden and assigned to the Wise potato chip division. Cheez Doodles remain one of the strongest brands marketed by Wise.
Like Cheetos, Cheez Doodles came in many varieties. The currently available versions include:
Cheez Doodles Puffed - the original baked snack version
Cheez Doodles Puffed White Cheddar
Cheez Doodles Crunchy - the hard, crunchy fried version
Cheez Doodles Crunch, Reduced Fat
Croc-o-Doodles- Crocodile shaped cheese doodle snacks
Wise recently made their Crunchy Cheez Doodles "cheezier." Their less intense cheese flavor has been replaced by a slightly more powerful flavor. The new flavor is much more akin to Cheetos'. The original Cheez Doodle has a new less "cheezier" taste.
They have recently entered pop culture as the preferred snack of ESPN NBA analyst Stephen A. Smith.[1]
They are also mentioned in many of the Stephanie Plum series books written by Janet Evanovich as a favorite snack of the main character Stephanie Plum. She can eat all she wants and never get fat.

I was saying how we'd done quite well considering our upbringing. To which my friend replied "20% of the world survives on less than a dollar a day. We didn't realise it but we grew up with riches that we took completely for granted. Schools, libraries, running water, public transportation."

Growing up my Mom only bought/used Helmanns, in fact my grandfather used Helmanns as his salad dressing of choice, often cutting iceberg lettuce into wedges, served with sliced beefsteak tomato and then spreading it all with mayo. I recall a few years ago that he once asked specifically for Helmanns in a restaurant. When he was told that only the typical salad dressing options were available to him , he was adamant that he be provided his mayonaise. He let our waitress know that he was nearing 90 years of age and was getting to NY and out to restaurants less and less. She brought him his mayo.

I agree, Miracle Whip is better on some things.

Best Foods on the West Coast. Best Foods owned Helman's but it stayed Hellmans on the East Coast. Best Foods was owned by Corn Products Company (CPC International). Not sure who owns the brand now but it is what I was raised on and the only mayo I will eat and I will never eat Miracle whip.

I actually didn't know it until I was driving in Englewood a year or so ago and passed by the bakery and was like WTF is Balthazars doing in such remote location then I learned that they do all their baking there and then deliver to the city locations and whomever orders their stuff. Looks like the have an onsite retail location so maybe you can pick up some yummy stuff there. Or maybe you can call and they can tell you if they deliver their breads to some locations in Jersey City. Their stuff is oh so good. The cranberries, raisin, walnut bread is to die for.

Denton - I haven't had it in years but crave it once in a while as a nostalgia thing. (Except when I was young it only built bodies 8 ways...)

Knicks are undefeated

Biffers - It's too late to stick the tompion in if you're already bugged! And apparently you are about my response to your flattering remarks.
Posted by: Arkady at October 19, 2009 5:46 PM
Geez, it's already the end of the 4th inning.
At this rate, I'll only be able to catch the last three hours of the game.

Dipster - I query the use of the word "many".
Posted by: Arkady at October 19, 2009 5:48 PM
Ya know, I'm enjoying this light-up ring pop and I'm starting to wonder what asshole thought this was a good candy for kids. I almost bit the candy part off and then realized that if I do, I will most certainly bite into the light that is making candy flash in the first place. Perhaps the bodega sold me recalled candy? WTF?
Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at October 19, 2009 5:50 PM
Ahhhh, got it now Arkady.
It's all good. I'm not bugged at all.
I still (heart emoticon) Arkady.

Arkady - enough that I can't count them on one hand, which is too much.
Posted by: dirty_hipster at October 19, 2009 5:51 PM
