Today's Throwback Thread of the Day is the first Forum Post from last year inviting Brownstoner fans to the First Annual End of The World (Or Maybe Not) Party.

A number of long-time, hardcore PLUSAs were involved in the discussion, which was just over a year ago.

Just a few of the things of note:

- I think this might have been Rob's first post ever (10:43AM - it's towards the bottom as he posted it the day after the thread was first put up). He basically introduces himself and didn't yet include the patented *Rob*.
- Cobble's Better Half aka Chad was referred to as "my 6'5" body guard"
- DIBS was already longing for a throwback to the "hot son of the contractor who demolished the party wall who was sitting in the backhoe" thread. Not only that, but check out his post at 3:48PM!!!
- The What's post at 2:47PM shows how tight he and I have always been.

Biff, is there any chance you were running this morning around 7am? (Don't laugh at me for asking)

Posted by: CarrollGardened at October 14, 2009 9:20 AM

A shout out to benson and our other Italian posters.

Al Martino, famous crooner most noted for his Volare and appearance in the Godfather passed away.

On a related note, I ate at Saraghina last night and one of the things they had on their ever-changing menu was polpette!!!!!!

Not meatballs as we know them here but luscious small balls of beef, pork and maybe veal. Typically not served with pasta in Italy, Saraghina did serve them with tomato sauce for the American palette.

"- The What's post at 2:47PM shows how tight he and I have always been. "

You write this knowing the sort of people who post on the OT? I can't wait til dibs sees this! :-)

Posted by: bxgrl at October 14, 2009 9:23 AM

Were you chasing him, CGar???

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at October 14, 2009 9:23 AM

Ah, the good old days...I'm just glad I still have my body guard!

Posted by: cobblehiller at October 14, 2009 9:25 AM

No, Dave, but the dog was!

Posted by: CarrollGardened at October 14, 2009 9:25 AM

did biff look particularly criminal this morning?

Posted by: bxgrl at October 14, 2009 9:27 AM

And, Cobble, now you have a Gar-dog, too

Posted by: CarrollGardened at October 14, 2009 9:27 AM

More cucina news: Times today has a big piece on pasta - not adopted from the orient post-Marco Polo, taken from the Arabs about 200 years earlier.

Posted by: Arkady at October 14, 2009 9:28 AM

Si, CGar! Now I just need a bunker! ; )

Posted by: cobblehiller at October 14, 2009 9:29 AM

Times not reliable info source - especially when they try to discredit the Chinaman's history on noodles

Posted by: more4less at October 14, 2009 9:29 AM

No, bxgrl, Biff looked no more criminal this morning than he does any other day

Posted by: CarrollGardened at October 14, 2009 9:31 AM

Hey, that gives me an idea, maybe I should make a blog...Cobbleville? ; )

Posted by: cobblehiller at October 14, 2009 9:31 AM

I suppose that explains Ramendan

"Biff, is there any chance you were running this morning around 7am? (Don't laugh at me for asking)"

No, in the word's of Shaggy, "It Wasn't Me". I did walk rather briskly over the bridge today around 7:15 though.

Posted by: Biff Champion at October 14, 2009 9:33 AM

Cobble, that would be fun but I would prefer a blog called Margaritaville.

Posted by: Biff Champion at October 14, 2009 9:34 AM

ditto- LOL!

Oops- in the interest of keeping all my future apartment possibilities open- everyone knows noodles were invented in China!

Posted by: bxgrl at October 14, 2009 9:35 AM

cobble, will you have Troll Spray???

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at October 14, 2009 9:35 AM

Hmm, on second thought, maybe I should start a blog called Rehabville!

Posted by: cobblehiller at October 14, 2009 9:36 AM

Nice throwback, biff. Some reminders in there that we were in the middle of election season, then. I remember discussing Joe the (unlicensed) Plumber with Master (the licensed) Plvmber and Smokeychimp at Union Hall. We've definitely lost some folks -- there was a big presence of brownstoner regulars who were not OT regulars. I think a lot of those folks have fallen by the wayside as part of the PLUSA social scene.

Posted by: slopefarm at October 14, 2009 9:37 AM

I'll have something I like to call Troll-Off.

Posted by: cobblehiller at October 14, 2009 9:37 AM

Dave and all;

The next time I go to my company's Milan office, I am going to check if this term "polpette" is "corrente" in Italy. "Corrente" literally means "current", but it is hard to convey its true meaning, which kind of is "really used in the language".

Just because it is an Italian word, one should not assume that it is used there. For instance, the phrase "Fettucine Alfredo" is "Non corrente" in Italy, even though it was indeed invented at a restaurant in Rome called Alfredo's. Some American movie stars (I forgot whom) came upon it and made the phrase popular here, but it is virtually unknown in Italy (though the dish certainly exists).

Another example is the common salutation among Italian-Americans of "cin'(t)ann", which is supposed to mean "live a hundred years". When I first tried this in Italy, they looked at me as if I had said the equivalent to "To your horse's health". The expression doesn't exist there.

I have a feeling that the term "polpette" is not used in Italy - I simply don't recall coming across it in my time there. However, in the interest of peace, I'll say that I might be wrong on that, and so I'm going to check it out next time I go there.

An apartment on the 68th floor of One Conduit Road in Hong Kong just sold for HK$439 MM (US$57 MM) or HK$88,000 psf...US$ 11,354 psf.

The developer is asking HK$ 100,000 psf for the two penthouse units.

I'd like the nominating committee to know that I am still anxiously awaiting my statuette for yesterday's Great PLUSA Truce of '09...I've already cleared a spot on my display shelf. Ahem....

Mornin' folks!

(thanks for shutting off the lights again last night Cargar)

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at October 14, 2009 9:41 AM

"English muffins" are unheard of in England.

Posted by: dittoburg at October 14, 2009 9:42 AM

No prob, Snappy, but did you see *rob* try and get me in trouble with you by turning them back on and leaving them on?

Posted by: CarrollGardened at October 14, 2009 9:42 AM

Benson - Kudos!

"I'd like the nominating committee to know that I am still anxiously awaiting my statuette for yesterday's Great PLUSA Truce of '09...I've already cleared a spot on my display shelf. Ahem...."

Snappy, I suggest we wait at least a day before bequeathing you the award. Truce's have been known to be, how shall we say, short-lived around here. Keeping fingers crossed, however...

Yes, Cargar...I say we put him in the corner today. Which is best since he's sick and we can't have him tossing germs all willy nilly around the OT. Did he clean up the clam chowder?

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at October 14, 2009 9:44 AM

i wanted to state this yesterday in the 1500 rentals thread but it was too late in the day when i read it.

anyway i have beef with the 1 and 2 months free baloney. why you ask? because they still do the "you must make between 40 and 45 x the rent" thing.

they stated in the apartments... 1700 a month, but after the free months and concessions and stuff it works out to 1300 a month. here's the sphinctitious part of it that i do not like. someone like me could perhaps quality for a 1300 dollar apartment, but NOT the 1700 dollar one, even tho you pay 1300 dollars a month. and the free months rent is stupid. why not just make it 1300 a month to begin with? so one or two months a year i dont have to pay the rent? but when you are paycheck to paycheck like a gazillion people at there, scrounging to pay 1700 a month is annoying when in reality it's 1300.

i know the owners, developers only do the free month thing so that when the economy picks up they can jack the rent up to 1800 instead of 1400.. it's just f'ed up and im thinking about starting a citizens lobby to petition this renting practise which i believe SHOULD be illage.

Biffers - When you post the party on the Forum today, why don't you give a call-out to some of the Forum regulars by name to try to entice them?

Posted by: Arkady at October 14, 2009 9:45 AM

btw, you can order chinese beef meatballs at all the places that serve dim sum here in NYC, HK, and probably most metro cities in china

Posted by: more4less at October 14, 2009 9:45 AM

Biff! Don't be a kill-joy! I'd like to think this truce will at least last through the week.

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at October 14, 2009 9:46 AM

"Sphintitious" - great coinage, Rob!

Posted by: Arkady at October 14, 2009 9:47 AM

benson, like I said the other day, our definition of meatballs is not what is available in Italy, supporting your original statements.

I understand your concer on the origins & usage of the word "polpette."

I just thought it very coincidental when I saw it last night at Saraghina. It was not there the week before. Additionally, they were not served with pasta like they would be here in the US.

I had the tagliatelle with meat ragu.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at October 14, 2009 9:49 AM

Arkady, perhaps, although people already think many of us are already being exclusionary. Are you coming tomorrow?

"I'd like to think this truce will at least last through the week."

You are very optimistic, Snappy! :-)

Posted by: Biff Champion at October 14, 2009 9:53 AM

Biff, we had the Non-PLUSA you'd like to meet category on the ballot! Just sayin'...

Posted by: cobblehiller at October 14, 2009 9:55 AM

Okay, anyone who makes over $100k go take the survey! Just joshin'...

Posted by: brownstoner at October 14, 2009 9:55 AM

Shall we set up a betting pool on this issue: How long will the PLUSA truce of October 2009 last?

Posted by: benson at October 14, 2009 9:56 AM

So I guess your advertisers don't care about us poorer folk?

Posted by: bxgrl at October 14, 2009 9:57 AM

Oops, Cobble/Arkady, I guess I misunderstood. I thought Arkady meant to mention PLUSAs by name to get them out. I would definitely love to have some first-timers and Forum regulars attend. I don't hang out in the Forum much. Can you two suggest who you would consider "the regulars" there?

Posted by: Biff Champion at October 14, 2009 9:58 AM

no benson, why don't we all just drop it already? It's old. Really old.

Posted by: bxgrl at October 14, 2009 9:59 AM

It'd be nice to think that the truce could be as enduring as some of the topics from last year's pre-party postings. It *could* happen if people make an effort to be unprovocative.

Posted by: Arkady at October 14, 2009 10:00 AM

I think the PLUSAs are on the road to mending their differences. It's a slippery slope and people will fall off the wagon with the slightest provocation but I'm optimistic.

Posted by: Arkady at October 14, 2009 10:03 AM

i don't know why the meatball thing annoys me so much. i can't help it, but i grew up in an italian neighborhood in NJ and thought i was italian. so much so that the first time i saw another ajin kid in school, i was like wtf? and when they had big trays of food and stuff, there was always a big tray of meatballs. not over spaghetti, just meatballs. not all beef, mixed ground veal and pork and maybe beef. along with baked ziti, eggplant parm and other stuff. these were pretty old school italian people too. so maybe it's a regional thing or something. but i will wait until benson gets back from italy.

If they've been reading the OT, I can't imagine why they would want to come. It hasn't been pleasant.

benson- I know that but it doesn't help. We seemed to have worked through a lot yesterday and now we're already saying it won't last. What's the point? The damn thing was stupid to begin with.

Posted by: Arkady at October 14, 2009 10:12 AM

Ok, here are my other contributions toward fostering the new peace. Two parts, one an apology, the other a response to Montrose's post late yesterday on the OT:

1) I apologize for using the term S____ V_____. I have a wife and daughter, and I certainly would not want anyone directing this term against them. Straight out, I apologize.

2) Montrose, you are indeed correct that I do not promote the concept of political correctness. My beef is that there is a one-sided political correctness on this site, and it has multiple dimensions. I think I've tried to point it out numerous times, so no need to go into details. I thought about it last night, and I suppose that some of it is inevitable when you have an overwhelming number of folks who tend to think along certain lines (which is the case on this site, folks). However, one cannot set oneself up as the sentinel against every ocassion where this pops up. So,I'll try to be less prickly in this regard.

OK folks, there you have it. That's my penance.

Posted by: benson at October 14, 2009 10:12 AM

OK OK, it's me who makes over 500K. Now who wants to be my friend?

Did my duty, Mr. B. I don't know whether it is comforting or disconcerting to think I read much better to advertisers demographically than I am actually worth to them. I guess that's good for you.

Also, I agree with DIBS that the media choices were constrained.

btw, that reminds me, DIBS, we had some discussions here with BRG a while back about the Barnes Foundation. Slate has an article today critiquing the proposed new home for the collection on the Ben Franklin. Looks like there is a fair amount of time left to see it in its original habitat since they haven't started the new building yet -- a must-see if you haven't done it yet.

Snappy, the Peace Prize is being handed out tomorrow night at Union Hall. If you're not there, it will go to the next most deserving person. I believe CG_ups was quite involved in the peace negotiations yesterday...hint, hint...

"Benson gets the Noble Prize"

That Borsalino does make him look noble.

Posted by: dittoburg at October 14, 2009 10:34 AM

Eeek! There should be an accent over the "e" in lame - I wasn't referring to your gimpiness!

Posted by: Arkady at October 14, 2009 10:35 AM

Benson, thank you. Apology accepted, 'nuff said.

In the immortal words of Verdi, "pace, pace, pace mio Dio, pace mio Dio." If you've ever heard Leontyne Price or Renata Tebaldi sing this, it is peace indeed, and powerful stuff. It's from La Forza del Destino.

Snappy - I might out myself if I gave you his name, its quite distinctive.

He was pre-named. He was an alley cat and the kids who gave him to us as a kitten told us it was a street gang name where they came from (meheho).

Posted by: dittoburg at October 14, 2009 11:23 AM

All,

I have an honest-to-goodness cat question. I hung out with a friend of mine in W'burg Friday night and discovered he is a hoarder and cat collector, with 7 cats. The guy is pretty destitute and yet he spends $13 a night on cat food. The original pair of cats bred and now there is a whole family.

I asked him how you're supposed to get rid of cats, and he said all the shelters are full. He is a friend of mine and he is in no shape to be laying out this kind of money when he has to worry about his rent all the time. He said he knows, he knows, but he can't just turn them out on the street.

Posted by: infinitejester at October 14, 2009 11:23 AM

jester. to start with, he needs to get those animals spayed/neutered ASAP. secondly. try BARC. they are in williamsburg and might be able to help, if not with housing the cats then with resources. also the mayor's alliance for animals may be able to help as well. lastly, tell him to watch animal cops on the animal planet channel. he will see that animal hoarders have a lot of love in their hearts for animals but truly end up doing more harm to themselves and the animals than good.

Posted by: CG_ups at October 14, 2009 11:27 AM

Wish I was swimming right now...a deep, vast clear sea. Can't you just hear the rushing of the water, spilling over therocks and shore?

Posted by: infinitejester at October 14, 2009 11:37 AM

Jester, the ASPCA has mobile vans that go to different lower income neighborhoods on Saturday's for spay/neutering for cats and dogs. Their schedule is on their website. If one is on public assistance, the fee is $25 per pet. It's $75 if you are not. Considering my vet charges at least $75 for me to sit in their office, this is a great deal. The downside is you have to get up at dawn on Saturday to be in line, outside, by at least 6:15-6:30. They say 7, but if you aren't in the line and have one of the first 24 pet spots, you won't get in. They go by cages, not people, and many people bring two pets.

You end up in line for a couple of hours, leave the pet, and come back at 4 to pick them up. It's a great service.

Posted by: Montrose Morris at October 14, 2009 11:37 AM

If he's honestly spending that much per day on cat food then he is seriously over feeding the little furballs. I buy a premium brand of cat food and it costs me $20 to feed two cats for about 1 and a half month's worth of food.

The Kirkland dry cat food at Costco is the best. It looks and smells like Science Diet, and the ingredients are comparable. It is low ash. I also had a cat with UTI. Best of all, the 25 lb bag costs $17, and lasts forever. That's about the same price as a 6 lb bag in the pet or grocery store. My guys scarf it down, and a little bit satisfies them.

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at October 14, 2009 12:28 PM

Arkady;

Actually I like the BJ's in East NY. I was just kidding Montrose because sometimes her pal Mr. B. rants about big box stores.

Posted by: benson at October 14, 2009 12:28 PM

I've never been to that BJ's - don't want to pay for 2 memberships but I've heard they have better selection.

No, Snappy, cats aren't allowed chocolate but the environment they're brought up in - odd eating habits by owners - have a lot to do w/ idiosyncratic behavior.

Posted by: Arkady at October 14, 2009 12:31 PM

Ok, so I just had to go again. I must have been backed up.
At what age does a man have to start going in the middle of the night (assuming he's not taking some bladder control meds)? I'm really dreading that.

How much do they cost?

I prefer the BJs in Brooklyn Heights.

Posted by: Biff Champion at October 14, 2009 12:32 PM

I go at least 3 times during the night. Of course I also drink almost a full gallon of water each day. Really gotta stop doing that. Ugh.

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at October 14, 2009 12:33 PM

Benson, back off on the Costco finger wagging - that's exclusive territory of CMU

Posted by: more4less at October 14, 2009 12:34 PM

Ok, then if we are blaming the owners then I guess I'm at fault for Pia's cheese puff fetish. She licks off all the cheese and then it becomes a toy to scoot across the kitchen floor.

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at October 14, 2009 12:34 PM

used to go to costco and now with BJ. go mainly to the one in middle village queens

Posted by: more4less at October 14, 2009 12:36 PM

Biffers - Shouldn't be an issue until mid-50s. Recent diet can have an immediate, temporary impact. Even room temp. But if you're worried, ask your doc at next check-up.

Posted by: Arkady at October 14, 2009 12:37 PM

Thanks Arkady. It hasn't happened yet, but it can't be far off. Definitely drinking a ton before bed doesn't help...unless it's a ton of booze, in which case I just pass out and pee in the bed.

Bloomberg gave the world's worst answer when Thompson began accusing him of perverting the will of the people by running for a third term. Bloomberg said, "People have been urging me to." Weak, weak, weak!

Bloomberg has been perverting the will of the people while others have been willing to be perverted people.

Posted by: Biff Champion at October 14, 2009 1:53 PM

As much as many of you hate what Bloomberg did with the term limits (and apparently legally according to the courts), the majority of the people seem to be in favor of him over anyone else.

I've liked a lot of what Bloomy has done (w/ some reservations) but what bothers me about his altering of term limits is that it's similar to other autocratic dicta he has made. Thanks goodness, though, Rudy wasn't able to make the same change.

"You live in a tent."

Actually, BJ, it's a teepee.

Posted by: CarrollGardened at October 14, 2009 2:06 PM

Benson, I'm sure Mr. B. has been seen in both Costco and Ikea. Even people who hate the idea end up there eventually. I don't go to Costco often, as I don't have a car, but they do have some things that are a real bargain - Kirkland brands: cat food, clear and kitchen garbage bags, for example. At Christmas time, I will stock up on cookie and cake ingredients, cuz I can't buy presents this year, and I always get a gallon jug of virgin olive oil that lasts quite a long time. Most of the rest of those mega size foods are not for me, it's just too much, and I don't have unlimited storage room, and it just doesn't make sense. I do prefer the Costco out on Rockaway Blvd over the one on 3rd, but that's too far to go most of the time.

Posted by: Montrose Morris at October 14, 2009 2:08 PM

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at October 14, 2009 2:14 PM

I'm not pissed at Bloomy, I'm more pissed at previous New Yorkers voting to make the system less democratic by telling you who you cannot vote for. Good job the previous New Yorkers didn't vote for doing away with voting all together.

But seeing as I can't vote, who cares what I think.

Posted by: dittoburg at October 14, 2009 2:15 PM

I think Boomie has done a lot of great things, but he lost me on two issues - the Crown Heights homeless intake center and term limits. The intake center is him at his most paternalistic and dictatorial, he just shoved it in our face, without a thought to the people of Brooklyn, or the homeless. He was only thinking of Manhattan and his cronies' real estate and development plans. He is much too Manhattan-centric in general. Term limits - they were voted on twice and passed for a reason, the people wanted them. It was a very self serving, dictatorial and imperialistic thing to do. It is classic Emperor Bloomberg.

That said, Thompson is not my favorite for several reasons, and I don't think he's going to win, but he's got my vote because not voting does not send a message, it just enables the status quo.

I don't know who to vote for. Probably either a grudging vote for Bloomberg or a protest vote for one of the minor candidates. Kind of feel like Guiliani had already done a lot of the hard work.

i dont believe in term limits. what's the point? i dont vote, cuz i dont care, but apparently some people care and like to vote, so let them vote for who they want, even if it's 10 terms in a row. and personally i think a good businessman is much better for a big city, especially in an economic crisis. i dont like him personally at all, and dont agree with a lot of his policies, but the people who vote do, so let them sing and dance away. ill just go with the flow and not worry about such trivial things like politics

I am on Silver's side, and against Bloomberg, on congestion pricing (i.e. against it). Very glad it got put off, even if it was rather underhanded. Just another stealth tax.
Term limits themselves aren't the issue in my mind, as much as the way in which they were overturned.

MM, I know, and there are usually cops standing idly by when I (along with a dozen others) jaywalk by Grand Central every day, but it annoyed me that he tried, and threatened to issue tickets, and I still don't like the barricades on 6th Avenue.

Posted by: dittoburg at October 14, 2009 2:45 PM

i think the thing with giuliani is that he tried to attack the cause of problems rather than dealing with the aftereffects. i think it's more effective in the long run but often less politically palatable. honestly even though i jaywalk, i highly recommend if people cross against the light, at least do it at the crosswalk. having driven and biked in the city i have to say that people really don't see you until the last second and it may be difficult or too late to react. and you will end up in more pain than the person in the car. also to the stroller people, please don't jaywalk with strollers. pet peeve. agh!

Posted by: CG_ups at October 14, 2009 2:47 PM

CarGar, what about those lights in the middle of the block, like on 3rd Ave in the 50's. They were supposed to stop jaywalking by making the crossing midblock, therefore safer for pedestrians, but instead, people crawl over the gating, and cross at the curb anyway. I used to drive our company car in that area, back in the 9-5 days, and that intersection was a mess.

Montrose;

re: the term limits issue - I think this is a red herring. The courts have found that his actions in this case were legal. Moreover, he did make himself dictator. He still must win the vote of the people.

Moreover, I think alot of the organizations who are running around screaming about democracy are being disingenuous. NYC is far from a functioning democracy. Most of our elected officials are decided at the time of the Democrat party primary. Most people have become apathetic and don't bother to vote, so these primaries are decided by the real people who run NYC: public-service unions, machine politicians, "non-profit" social-service organizations, etc. The result is typical of any one-party rule situation: stooges in the City Council who are both corrupt ane at the beck and call of the civil-service unions. The only thing putting a stop to that is a strong, independent mayor, which is why both Giuliani and Bllomberg were elected. Thompson is a political hack machine politician who will bring us back to the bad old days.

Lest you think I'm just being partisan, note that this system is the inevitable result of any one-party-rule situation. Nassau County used to be a one-party government and in that case it was the Republicans. At least over there the folks wised up after the corruption became obvious and they gave the Democrats a seat at the table. It's amazing to me that NYC'ers, who like to think they are sophisticated, allow themselves to be ruled like a banana republic.

Posted by: benson at October 14, 2009 2:49 PM

Funny ditto. Think you're from London, where it was adopted and seems to be accepted. I'm from Manchester, where it was voted down with 75%+ against.

Posted by: etson at October 14, 2009 2:49 PM

Bloomberg has sown the seeds of his own potential destruction by hijacking the democracy to extend term limits. He didn't like the rules, so he rather hypocritically changed them. Typical rich-guy tactics at a time when heavy-handed CEO behavior is quite out of fashion. I'm not saying he'll lose, but it is ironic his corrupt bargain could possibly trigger his defeat.

Posted by: East New York at October 14, 2009 2:49 PM

MM - lights in the middle block are intended to alleviate the traffic backup from turning vehicles by moving the pedestrian flow away from the corner. whether it works or not is up for debate, but that is the intention.

I don't know about hijacking democracy, its Bloomberg who was elected Mayor of the city but its Silver who decides what projects will or won't fly for this city (West Side Stadium, congestion pricing etc etc). The idea that Bloomberg is somehow making a power grab when most of the power was grabbed long ago by backroom dealers in an undemocratic system is just hot air.

Posted by: dittoburg at October 14, 2009 2:59 PM

That may well be so, guys, and I'm realistic enough to agree with much of what you say, Benson and DIBS. Not enough people do vote, (see rob, above) and we get what/who we get. I think part of the problem is that the choices are so limited. I mean, who really wants to be saddled with the problems of the MOST IMPORTANT CITY IN THE ENTIRE KNOWN UNIVERSE? You'd almost have to be either a political hack with the support of the many factions of NYC's back rooms, or a megalomaniac control freak. If you think about it, we either get one or the other, and occasionally both at once.

Someone without his $$$ would not have been able to do this.
It was outrageous although apparently legal.
Nobody is irreplaceable. Guiliani tried pulling that at end of his last term.

I've been looking for the thread, I think back in January, when you, what and everyone else were going at it with the team bull/team bear stuff and I asked for everyone's predictions for where we would be within a year. I think you had the dow breaking 11k at some point in or before Jan. 2010. I think what had it around 6k, but i'm not sure. I don't remember the case-schiller predictions. I may be wrong, but I think it was a Jan. 09 thread, or maybe Nov. or Dec. '08, but I don't recall whether it was an OT, HOTD, 6 month later, or one of what's nuclear forum posts. Maybe biff can find it, or maybe a PLUSA earmarked it somehow for revisiting. Would be interesting to look at as we get closer.

Well, I'm not a "retard," but it sounds like you'd certainly qualify. I've never said anything like "Snitches get stitches." That's the corniest, dumbest thing I've ever heard. In fact, I've lived in Brooklyn my whole life and I have NEVER heard anyone utter that phrase. Sounds like something you read on MSNBC.com.

Let's me make this clear. I come from a family with several members in law enforcement. Although I would never go out of my way to set someone up (like this jerk who makes $$ outting cigarette tax cheats), I would have no problem helping police to solve a crime, if I happened to have some information that would help. Selling bootleg cigarettes is illegal, to be sure, but it's not on my list of serious crimes, sorry. To me, there's a difference. I think you friend is a slimy little weasel, OK? And I will be sure to out him to my bodega guy (who is a pal of mine) if I even SUSPECTED he and I were in my corner store at the same time. You moronic jerk.

benson, maybe they use 'meatball'. After all, we use words like pesto, parmesan, etc.

What's up with this 'peace' sh*t? I got home late yesterday and didn't read 'Stoner'. Guess I have to go back.

Bloomberg is the greatest mayor ever in my lifetime. Guilani was a jerk. I think Bloomberg is being characterized unfairly by being called 'Manhattan-centric'. He tries mightily to reach out to the other boros, imo.

I'd love to rip down those damn fences Guilani put up. Especially the ones by the Manhattan Bridge. What an ass. Bloomberg tries to make the city more pedestrian and people-friendly, and bike friendly. Guilani built fences to pen in pedestrians and give the city back to the out-of-towners in cars. Wonderful.

I look forward to congestion pricing, hopefully it will be back. Plenty of ways to get around Manhattan without driving.

ROFL, Dave. I want to see the stats about how often respondents check Brownstoner.

shaving sprouts kinda kinky.. could get you arrested.

Posted by: Petebklyn at October 14, 2009 3:51 PM

Well let's not pretend that a Peace Treaty means that there will never be any cyber jousting here. It's always been a part of this site (and most other blogs) and always will be. Expecting it to never get ugly is unfortunately a pipe dream.

This should be the name of the Official PLUSA Cocktail

"I don't need any of you guys to defend me. He can say whatever he wants on the Internet. I can bet you any money he'd never say that to my face."

Hey eny, I'm sure you don't but sometimes a community has to show that certain things are unacceptable. At least that's how I feel. To me that kind of talk is fuc*ed up. Anyway I hope you come to the meeting. I have one or two things I'd like to say to your face. Mainly about riding between subway cars :-)

to be honest, i think bigger finance bonuses will affect manhattan pricing (and westchester/fairfield county) much more than brooklyn. honestly, the number of wall street folks who live in brooklyn is pathetically small.

Chill out, everybody! I'm not going to destroy the peace process. That line is from "Feed the Tree" by Belly:

Take your hat off boy

And be there when I feed the tree."

All-purpose comeback I've been saving up for some time now for people who never let up. I never even considered the race angle.

Posted by: Biff Champion at October 14, 2009 3:56 PM

Infinite - as someone who wasn't born here and was previously culturally unaware about that particular expression until I came here, I must say its difficult to believe that an American could be ignorant of the import of that.

Posted by: dittoburg at October 14, 2009 3:57 PM

They should call it the Barack.

A lot of spas won't wax the sack cause it's very sensitive.

Panties in a Twist

I drink Stoli straight, so I'm not the best mixologist, but clearly it will have a twist.

Anyone?

Posted by: CarrollGardened at October 14, 2009 3:58 PM

m4l, yes, even so. wall street types are as much creatures of habit as any other people. most of the bigger money peeps are not in brooklyn. in fact, i would guess that more are in NJ than in brooklyn, though overwhelmingly most are manhattan/westchester/fairfield county as a percentage of the big earners.

Posted by: CG_ups at October 14, 2009 3:58 PM

I think "twisted polpettes" would be a better expression.

Posted by: brownjokester at October 14, 2009 3:59 PM

It's no sideshow to me, ditto. I'm not talking about Sheldon Silver, OK? I'm talking about Michael Bloomberg. I'm a registered Democrat, and I actually voted for him the first time around. Furthermore, I happen to agree he has done some really great things. But this is NYC - it's full of capable, talented people. No one person, I don't care how spectacular he/she thinks he/she is, is indispensible. The city will continue to go on. When Bloomberg went back on his word and engineered himself an opportunity to become mayor again, he directly disregard for the expressed will of the people for his own selfish purposes. To me, this was a keen insight into his character, and I don't like what I see. I guess you and I just disagree on this issue.

Posted by: East New York at October 14, 2009 3:59 PM

Panties With a Twist is like that 50/50 male-female split that Brownstoner mentioned this morning. Not my thang, really.

Bloomberg is an ass. He will not get my vote simply because of the term limits thing. I refuse to reward Bloomberg's antics with a vote that people fought and died for me to have. Jackass.

"Whats more, what Bloomberg did is legal, unless he bought the judge."

Yes, it was definitely legal. It was also disingenuous, sneaky and it reeks of a back-room deal, which is exactly what is was. Covert subversion of the democratic process. It was, to paraphrase the supporters of Andrew Jackson, a "corrupt bargain."

as bad as that post by jester sounded, I'm not sure if he meant the racist angle. his post history doesn't support it nor do I expect him to have balls to say such a thing to ENY whom albeit claims to look like Eddie Murphy but I suspect is a much bigger dude (plus he sounds like type who handles his business).

In a sad commentary on present NYC, Mr. B.'survey had neither "engineering" nor "industrial" in the list of fields.

Glad you had a chuckle CG-

In truth, Dinkins was/is a very refined man. A true gentleman. Unfortunately he was the wrong man at the wrong time and the socio-economic fabric of the city began/continued to unravel. His term was a disaster for much of NYC and he is widely regarded/ remembered as an ineffective sub par mayor. I fear that Bill Thompson will bring forth much of Dinkins failed ideology. In contrast, Mayor Bloomberg is beholden to no man, and to no group. The choice needs to be made, and to me, Bloomberg is the only reasonable option.

Posted by: Crescent Hill at October 14, 2009 4:26 PM

"That line is from "Feed the Tree" by Belly"

Now I get it. You probably got that "Snitches get stitches" crap from that garbage rapper Belly. Unlike you, I don't have to sample phony MC's to obtain access to street credibility. I'm from the streets. And no, M4L, I'm not a big guy or a bully, but I grew up in a much rougher Brooklyn than most of the folks here, and dealt with lots of actual tough guys. And I'm still around. i like mike. overall, he remains a businessman at heart not a politician which i think has been his greatest strength. the whole term limits thing is douchebaggy but overall when weighing the merits, i feel that he is quite effective. and he likes parks, the arts, and puppies. ok, i don't know about puppies. but still, overall he's the guy for the job right now. nyc certainly does not run itself, don't underestimate the negative fallout that would come with an ineffectual mayor.

Posted by: CarrollGardened at October 14, 2009 4:49 PM

benson- I was out visiting my 101 year old uncle, otherwise I would have engaged you on the Bloomberg/republican/democratic issue :-)

I must be the only one who thinks Dinkins never got a chance to prove himself. Our first Black mayor he was scrutinzed and practically demonized the second he walked into Gracie Mansion. They even made an issue out of his bedroom furniture. I will say he was no match for Giuliani's nasty temperment.

As far as this being a one party town, well look around. Almost every state in the union is either one or the other and the bigger issue is why don't the Republicans make a stronger showing in NYC? And maybe its because they aren't addressing the things Nyers want addressed. Face it, it is a liberal town- at least more liberal than North Dakota. there is a wide range of political philosophies, but with the republicans making no attempt at hiding the contempt they feel for us, and misreading what the public is saying, I don't see it changing anytime soon. And benson is right- its not good for NY to be this way, but you still have to ask why. And don't put it off on demonizing liberals o.r democrats, or complaining about the unions. Get a message people can agree with, or one that can convince them the Republican party offers better choices

Posted by: bxgrl at October 14, 2009 4:50 PM

bxgrl, I think this paints Republicans with too broad a brush - and I say this as a registered Democrat (though I may re-register as an Independent). Kens, look at the ticket carefully to see what they hit you up for. A buddy of mine got one crossing holland tunnel (from NJ into NYC) and going to just pay the massive amt (200+) but chose to fight it when he realize it was deemed "reckless driving" which is a 5 pt offense (ie next violation gets your license suspended). Lucky for him the NJ DA rep at the court settled with him, think like $125 for some no pt violation.

Ok, DIBS, but only if they're UNsalted.

Posted by: cobblehiller at October 14, 2009 5:06 PM

Yawks! Egad! By my trothen!

Posted by: Arkady at October 14, 2009 5:06 PM

Well, that's just lovely Snappy!

I'll pull out the cute new cocktail napkins!

Posted by: cobblehiller at October 14, 2009 5:07 PM

Oh, and whatever happened to our clambake? I think we should have a cocktail/appetizer potluck clambake.

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at October 14, 2009 5:07 PM

I typed "worm off" in Google and it suggested piperazine tablets for de-worming your chickens

Posted by: dittoburg at October 14, 2009 5:07 PM

Dave, the fact that you want Black & Tan is a given :)

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at October 14, 2009 5:08 PM

Kens' sister (if you're reading this), you just got tip on his Xmas gift - bluetooth ear piece

Posted by: more4less at October 14, 2009 5:08 PM

I'll have a Big Girl's Blouse on the rocks, but hold the tequila worm off

Posted by: dittoburg at October 14, 2009 5:09 PM

Cocktail napkins? Now it's a party!

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at October 14, 2009 5:09 PM

I don't think our chicken has worms - he's boxing today (or has boxed) (or was boxed) but I doubt he wormed off.

Posted by: Arkady at October 14, 2009 5:10 PM

I'll have a Big Girl's Blouse in my bed.

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at October 14, 2009 5:11 PM

I heard DIBS has a bluetooth codpiece

Posted by: dittoburg at October 14, 2009 5:12 PM

I know! It's amazing how a simple little thing like cocktail napkins can dress a place up!

Posted by: cobblehiller at October 14, 2009 5:13 PM

ditto.....I love gusanos de maguay. they make the best beer snacks when the'yre fried up crunchy with a little salt. Mmmmmmmmmmmm

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at October 14, 2009 5:13 PM

Posted by: dittoburg at October 14, 2009 5:14 PM

im getting frustrated this afternoon about having been prescribed a NEW-ish drug for people with severe asthma when i dont even have asthma. since taking it i keep having these little bouts where i feel like i cant breathe! wtf? is my doctor an idiot?

*rob*

Posted by: Butterfly at October 14, 2009 5:17 PM

"is my doctor an idiot?"

When you were in his office was he sitting behind his desk with a stethoscope around his neck or was he sitting in the corner with a pointy hat having a big "D" on it?

Posted by: dittoburg at October 14, 2009 5:19 PM

rob - Advair is really good. I did the announce show on it & recommended it to friends when I'd learned how it works.

Posted by: Arkady at October 14, 2009 5:20 PM

Yes, but Rob, bad bronchitis can bring on an asthmatic reaction. Depending on the drug he gave you [Advair?] is can take some time to work. Unless he gave you a bronchiodilator which gives you pretty instant relief if your breathing is tight.

Posted by: cobblehiller at October 14, 2009 5:20 PM

Rob, after years of smoking you may in fact have asthma. I didn't always have it. It came upon me from being a total jackass and continuing to smoke. But I will tell you that Advair is a nasty med. I refuse to take that anymore. I do a regular inhaler or nebulizer for emergencies and Flovent for daily use to keep the ole breathing bags in check.

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at October 14, 2009 5:20 PM

rob- tell your doctor immediately! You could be having a bad side effect. Most drugs can do that- it depends on your matablolism and physical condition.

Posted by: bxgrl at October 14, 2009 5:21 PM

Isn't Advair a steroid? I avoid them myself, too.

Posted by: cobblehiller at October 14, 2009 5:22 PM

It isn't all that new - I think the show was in '97. Usually it's recommended for really severe breathing difficulties - if taking a deep breath is like inhaling through one of those little, plastic cocktail straws.

Posted by: Arkady at October 14, 2009 5:24 PM

And Arkady scores 600! Don't mind me. Resume Advair and cocktails.

Posted by: CarrollGardened at October 14, 2009 5:27 PM

Advair made me absolutely loony (yes, I can be loonier!). I felt like I was going crazy and had the shakes like a crackhead. Very bad stuff. Even after I stopped taking it, it took my body 3 days to calm down again. That was like smoking a really really bad and powerful bag of weed.

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at October 14, 2009 5:28 PM

Congrats Arkady! You were 600!

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at October 14, 2009 5:28 PM

CarGar - Couldn't you just have left it at: "Arkady scores"?

Posted by: Arkady at October 14, 2009 5:30 PM

Geez, I need a drink now, must be a bottle of Pinot Gris under [rattle rattle tink] here somewhere. AHA! There it is!

Posted by: cobblehiller at October 14, 2009 5:31 PM

Yippee!

Posted by: Arkady at October 14, 2009 5:31 PM

Oh, how I want beer! Cobble, tip your glass for me!

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at October 14, 2009 5:32 PM

Arkady!! Not every joke with numbers is about your age!

But speaking of age...I saw a photo of myself today, in which, I looked like MY MOTHER!!

Holy mother of g*d, it's HAPPENING!!! NOW! It thought I might have a few more years...but as it turns out, no.

Posted by: cobblehiller at October 14, 2009 5:33 PM

ROFL, Arkady! Sorry. Next time.

Cobble, I hate when you drink on the South Verandah without me!

Snappy, loonier? Than what I witnessed? Really?

Posted by: CarrollGardened at October 14, 2009 5:34 PM

"Cobble, I hate when you drink on the South Verandah without me!"

Ah, CGar, I didn't know you were home from work yet! I have to talk to the butler, he's supposed to ring me!

Posted by: cobblehiller at October 14, 2009 5:36 PM

Cobble, it's nature's payback for the hard time we give them in our younger years...we wind up looking *and* acting exactly like them :) I catch myself using some of my mother's well-worn phrases all too often lately.

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at October 14, 2009 5:36 PM

Yup, Cargar, I can be worse!

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at October 14, 2009 5:37 PM

When my hair gets long, and I'm carrying my extra cubicle weight, I look like my father, and that's NOT a look I'm going for!

Posted by: CarrollGardened at October 14, 2009 5:39 PM

" it's nature's payback"

Cripes, Snappy, don't I know it!!!

I've given up on not sounding like my folks, they just spit right out of my mouth all day!

Posted by: cobblehiller at October 14, 2009 5:39 PM

Hmmm. Everyone who knew my mother wishes I were more like her: moderate, even tempered, voice of sweet reason...

Posted by: Arkady at October 14, 2009 5:41 PM

Sigh. I am my mother's child. Sigh.

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at October 14, 2009 5:42 PM

I would kill for a sazerac right now

Posted by: dirty_hipster at October 14, 2009 5:42 PM

My mom was here last week - people always tell us we have the same facial expressions.

Posted by: etson at October 14, 2009 5:43 PM

Oh well. Dinner time! Later asshats :)

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at October 14, 2009 5:44 PM

My father was a real teetotaler, so clearly I don't take after him. When my brother and I were well beyond drinking age, and the waiter would come to take our drink order, before either of us could say anything, my father would automatically turn to the waiter and say, "The boys will have Cokes."

Posted by: CarrollGardened at October 14, 2009 5:46 PM

Sazerac for DH, here you go....

Posted by: cobblehiller at October 14, 2009 5:50 PM

TTFN!

Posted by: Arkady at October 14, 2009 5:51 PM

Gott go make applesauce! [To go with the pork chops, yes, really!]

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at October 14, 2009 7:07 PM

Thanks a lot, Snappy! I just walked in the room, couldn't see a damn thing and knocked over the PLUSA trophy case!

Posted by: Biff Champion at October 14, 2009 7:23 PM

*sneaks in thru the sky light*

*fumbles around hopped on Advair, Soma, and a 40*

*ouch*

*turns on the lights*

*steals the cream cheese*

*exits sky light*

*ouch*

*rob*

Posted by: Butterfly at October 14, 2009 8:21 PM

*turns lights off AGAIN*

dammit

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at October 14, 2009 11:20 PM

Oh, and a warning: The next person to come in here and leave the lights on will be getting a hot pot of grits in the face and several b.b. pellets in square in the ass!

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at October 14, 2009 11:25 PM

Pathetic losers...
