Good morning everyone!

Jo san. That's goood morning in cantonese. It has nothing to do with you, Joe. :)

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at October 9, 2009 9:25 AM

A Nobel price? Really?! The value of that prize just tanked.

Posted by: BSD at October 9, 2009 9:39 AM

Do you think the value of the prize was that high to begin with?

Posted by: the chicken at October 9, 2009 9:43 AM

The handing out of the prize does seem a bit hasty and not very well thought out. I like Obama, but damn. 8-9 months in and he gets a Peace Prize? It's time to stop over-glorifying, or perhaps even deifying a person.

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at October 9, 2009 9:44 AM

Morning peeps! Commie here who wants to tell all the poor to go screw themselves and die on welfare while taking up all of those brownstones in Crown Heights. YEY!

Posted by: Kensingtonian at October 9, 2009 9:45 AM

Chicken, you're behind on the scorecard vs DIBS. here's the round by round scoring so far:
round 1 - Chicken
round 2 - DIBS
round 3 - draw
round 4 - DIBS

Mkt looks like it'll do the YE rally bs that DIBS was talking about.

Posted by: more4less at October 9, 2009 9:46 AM

Pipe down you commie! LOL How's it hangin Kens?

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at October 9, 2009 9:46 AM

premature - he might well be an excellent candidate for it in a couple of years. He's probably embarrassed by getting it so soon.

Posted by: dittoburg at October 9, 2009 9:47 AM

Damn commies

Posted by: dirty_hipster at October 9, 2009 9:48 AM

Snappy!!!!!! How you feelin? Can you eat solid food yet? We gotta do lunch again soon (with or without margaritas).

Posted by: Kensingtonian at October 9, 2009 9:48 AM

Let's recap:

Is Iraq any different??
Afghanistan is definitely worse, as is Pakistan
Venezuela is re-arming
The Middle East is, well The Middle East
Israel has increased anti Iran rhetoric and Iran has stated abilities for a nuclear weapon.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at October 9, 2009 9:48 AM

Good morning all;

The Nobel Peace Prize is already old news. I advise that you run for a fallout shelter. Nuclear war is upon us.

Posted by: benson at October 9, 2009 9:49 AM

I'm feeling better Kens. Still not 100% well, but getting there. Yes, we must lunch again soon...no margaritas this time!

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at October 9, 2009 9:50 AM

time will tell M4L.

As for the Peace Prize, my point was whether Mandela is any more revered or Arafat any less reviled because they won the prize before?

Posted by: the chicken at October 9, 2009 9:51 AM

Kens, that was close man. that post nearly included me in there and there would be a brawl btwn the 2 commies here - you got saved by the "brownstones" reference (ie my crown heights pad aint in a brownstone).

Posted by: more4less at October 9, 2009 9:51 AM

DH, sometimes when people preach national healthcare, equal living for everyone, same pay, etc., I feel like I never left the motherland. If you really want that, there are plenty of communist countries that will accept you. As lech says it best....>>>> line forms to the left.

Waiting for attacks to start but thankfully my lazy ass is working only a couple of hours today so I wont be on here to hear it.

Posted by: Kensingtonian at October 9, 2009 9:52 AM

THL snuck into enemy territory and launched a depth charge while we were all over there drinking our depth charges and Manhattans.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at October 9, 2009 9:53 AM

Oh, and Ghandi never won the Nobel Peace Prize....

Posted by: the chicken at October 9, 2009 9:53 AM

M4L, here's property for you:

http://tinyurl.com/yk784dr

You gotta give the listing agent props for including the down and dirty pics. What would it cost to get that baby up and running again?

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at October 9, 2009 9:53 AM

$137 psf!!!! That's a beauty, Snappy.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at October 9, 2009 9:56 AM

M4L, I'll share brownstones with fellow commie immigrants. We will lie, cheat and screw the system anyway we can or just work hard and actually earn it :o).

Posted by: Kensingtonian at October 9, 2009 9:57 AM

Morning All! At the risk of being pummeled, I just want to join those who are suggesting that Obama's Nobel was a bit premature. I voted for Obama (though I'm a devout Hillary supporter) and I want him to succeed, but WTF? Say what you will about Jimmy Carter (and I for one rarely have anything nice to say about him), but he brokered peace between Egypt and Israel. Al Gore? Championed the environment for years. Obama? A Nobel for 9 months of smiling and giving speeches. Really? OK. I guess I don't get it because I never drank the Kool-Aid. Carry on.

Posted by: CarrollGardened at October 9, 2009 9:59 AM

All immigrants from Asia need to be processed first. Line forms to my rear.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at October 9, 2009 10:01 AM

nobel prize jumped the shark

Posted by: DeLepp at October 9, 2009 10:01 AM

CGar...did you steal that "Carry on" from somewhere over there>>>>>>>

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at October 9, 2009 10:02 AM

snappy, if you believe the renov quotes thrown around on this blog, that fixer would cost you easily 300k and tons of time & headache. personally, I dont like to deal with massive fixers on a frame house - much higher risk to encounter material structural issues than with a brick house

Posted by: more4less at October 9, 2009 10:02 AM

Kens launches the broadside and then says waiting for the attacks? don't play all innocent just cause woke up on wrong side of bed.

Posted by: Petebklyn at October 9, 2009 10:02 AM

Wow guys, I'll remember this when you receive your Nobel Prize.

Did you listen/read the statement as to why he was given the award? Someone has to be a leader and at least make the attempt to lead the world into better relations after so many years of ill will towards the US.

I'm kind of stunned by your comments.

Posted by: cobblehiller at October 9, 2009 10:03 AM

dibs, a hottie mexican at the bar we were at last night. henry between atlantic and pacific. bones, bones and more bones.

Posted by: DeLepp at October 9, 2009 10:03 AM

CGar - I was a big Hillary gal as well. But I guess Obama's win makes me happy because it means that the world likes us again. Also, the fact that the Taliban even was reachable for comment (didn't deserve it) makes me somewhat hopeful for an improved dialog. And maybe it was just a slow year for peace.

Posted by: jessibaby at October 9, 2009 10:03 AM

BTW, who did Obama beat out for this price? was some real legitimate candidate got stiffed for the award?

Posted by: more4less at October 9, 2009 10:05 AM

Yeah, he's freakin' escalating the war in Afghanistan! Bill Maher on other liberal equivalents of Rush Limbaugh better watch out, if the progressives are for real your gonna have Lefty tea party pretty soon...

Posted by: Joe from Brooklyn at October 9, 2009 10:05 AM

Customer or employee, DeLepp????

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at October 9, 2009 10:05 AM

CGAR and all;

It's even worse than that. This selection was made about 6 months ago - it was just announced now.

Hey DIBS, you're the financial guy: could you check which commodity is losing value faster: the dollar or the Nobel Peace Prize.

Back to the fallout shelter!!

BTW: I just gotta give props again to Kens. A true Brooklynite, keeping it real.

Posted by: benson at October 9, 2009 10:06 AM

Kens, play nice. No one advocated any of the things you said, and even if they did, it's a blog where people throw their opinions into the ring, and the interaction begins. It doesn't mean much in the scheme of life, they are just opinions. It's how we treat each other that counts. I, for one, respect you greatly, and appreciate that you have lived in a country and within a system that none of us can really imagine. Some of us have had experiences that most of the rest of us can't really understand, but hopefully we can be empathetic, and at least respectful. No one, I'm sure, meant to do anything but express their opinions. Let's just have a good Friday.

Posted by: Montrose Morris at October 9, 2009 10:06 AM

I miss Horror Show friday.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at October 9, 2009 10:08 AM

Oh please kens, that's so extreme. No one is suggesting communism. Spewing knee-jerk republican platitudes is really weak.

Posted by: cobblehiller at October 9, 2009 10:08 AM

Pete, I am really just kidding.

MM, Love yaaaaaaaa! You know I am just messing around :o).

DIBS, you mentioning Asians and not Latin Americans? tisk tisk.

Posted by: Kensingtonian at October 9, 2009 10:10 AM

Cindy Sheehan just moved to D.C. to remind the country why they elected Obama in the first place.
I wonder what she has to say about all this...

Posted by: Joe from Brooklyn at October 9, 2009 10:11 AM

M4L, fixed up, what would that property be worth? Is it better as a tear-down and start from scratch?

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at October 9, 2009 10:11 AM

Cgar,

No pummeling from me (glancing over left shoulder). I like Obama a lot (although, like you, I voted for Hil in the primary), but this is clearly an aspirational award. The Nobel folks are trying to give a little worldwide boost to his efforts to change the tone of things. Think Cairo speech, baby steps with Russia and Iran, etc. But nothing has happened for me to get up and applaud this as well-deserved. It's way too soon. Here's hoping he earns it after the fact. Here's also hoping that this doesn't devolve into an OT foodfight.

Posted by: slopefarm at October 9, 2009 10:11 AM

How'd the Phillies do last night Dave?

Posted by: East New York at October 9, 2009 10:15 AM

I say that we return to that riveting debate about peanut butter!

Let's go through brands.

Skippy man here!

Posted by: benson at October 9, 2009 10:15 AM

I'd like to congratulate President Obama for winning the Nobel Peace Prize. He won because he has inspired the world, and because he is a voice of calm and reason, and a marked change from the man he replaced. Good for him.

Who else is in the running? Sad to say, there's not much peace or attempts at peace in the world, especially on a global level. No, he's not perfect, and he's made some dubious domestic choices, but I still trust that the country is in good hands, and the world is safer with him in charge, instead of Bush, or McCain. The Nobel committee can give the award to whomever they choose. They chose him. Deal with it.

Posted by: Montrose Morris at October 9, 2009 10:15 AM

Nevermind DH...I got it! (sometimes forget that this blog has other pages!)

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at October 9, 2009 10:16 AM

Oh yeah - HAIL TO THE CHIEF!

Posted by: East New York at October 9, 2009 10:17 AM

"Did you listen/read the statement as to why he was given the award? Someone has to be a leader and at least make the attempt to lead the world into better relations after so many years of ill will towards the US."

Cobble, I read the statement. And I'm all in favor of mending diplomatic fences (I never liked Bush's cowboy diplomacy) and working multilaterally with other nations, allies or not. My only point was that, after only 9 months in office, I think it's premature to give the man a Nobel.

Posted by: CarrollGardened at October 9, 2009 10:18 AM

Cobble, you know I love you. I am really half joking. My life in Russia wasn't peachy and neither was it for my parents or grandparents and when I hear some of the things discussed here, it truly scares me to no end. I really really mean it from the bottom of my heart.

Benson, thanks. Hopefully will see you at one of the get togethers and we can discuss some more authentic Gravesend and Bensonhurst things. Funny enough I always thought of Avenue P and Kingshighway (up to McDonald Ave.) as Midwood but it really is technically Gravesend.

Posted by: Kensingtonian at October 9, 2009 10:19 AM

East of Malcolm X, m4l, but your number is right.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at October 9, 2009 10:21 AM

Montrosse, well said.
I think the Nobel Committee, which has been accused of an anti-American bias in the past, is showing the world that it endorses American attempts at diplomacy and hopefully is strengthening Obama's international creds. Its not every world leader that has a Nobel medal on his or her mantle.

Posted by: Minard Lafever at October 9, 2009 10:21 AM

Jessi, yes, I agree and meant to direct my last post to you, too.

"But nothing has happened for me to get up and applaud this as well-deserved. It's way too soon. Here's hoping he earns it after the fact."

Slope, that's all I'm saying. I agree with you, too. I applaud his efforts and, again, I hope he succeeds. I get the aspirational aspect of the award, but I would've preferred a "wait and see" approach. I hope giving Obama the Nobel isn't like the "curse of the Oscar".

Posted by: CarrollGardened at October 9, 2009 10:22 AM

ENY,, it's tied at 1-1, essentially as if the first two games never happened. Makes it tighter but no one is ahead.

Dugout heads never seem to be able to grasp that concept.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at October 9, 2009 10:22 AM

Thank you MM, I can't EVER seem to get the words out as wonderfully as you. We need more positive leaders with the energy to take pro-active steps towards getting people to think about ways to improve relations around the world. Whether or not he is successful in his efforts, the INTENTION and ACTION is inspiring to me.

signed, Human being, over and out.

Posted by: cobblehiller at October 9, 2009 10:24 AM

So at 289k and 300k reno costs to only come out at 500k value doesn't seem worth it for investment/rental purposes but could be good I guess for someone looking to make it their primary residence for the long term. I found this property running a search for single fam homes in BK under 500k. There were surprisingly plenty to choose from. Drinking the B'Stoner kool-aid can leave a real estate newbie thinking that there is no such thing.

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at October 9, 2009 10:25 AM

"Who else is in the running?"

How about General Petraeus, who finally brought some semblance of peace to Iraq?

I know, politically incorrect answer.

Posted by: benson at October 9, 2009 10:26 AM

I am more a Peter Pan fan myself. Name has a better ring.
I mean seriously, would you want to go through life called Skippy or Peter.

Posted by: Petebklyn at October 9, 2009 10:27 AM

cobble and montrose--I am with you. Pretty sour comments for our President from this gang. All of the issues that folks are holding against him are things that he inherited upon arriving in office. And I for one am pleased to have a president that is engaging with the world rather than threatening it.

Posted by: wasder at October 9, 2009 10:27 AM

It'd make a beautiful home and it's not that bad of a block. Contrary to what the opposing viewpoint on brownstoner is, it will be worth a lot more than $500,000 in a few years.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at October 9, 2009 10:27 AM

Minard is right, and the Committee said as much. They are hoping that supporting his lead will INSPIRE others to work towards the goals of encouraging peace and better relations throughout the world. Someone has to lead the way, and who better than the leader of the FREE world.

kens, there is no way that this country is going "commie". It's not what this country is founded on, it's not how we vote. It ain't happening, so calm down and try to look at your perspective a bit. It feels to me like it's clouded by your personal experience. Let's try to be a little more realistic here. Pretty please?

Posted by: cobblehiller at October 9, 2009 10:28 AM

Minard--thanks for the dutch translation in the AM Links.

Posted by: wasder at October 9, 2009 10:29 AM

"Makes it tighter but no one is ahead."

Yeah, OK. Tell Pedro not to catch a cold out there in Colorado. It'll be 20 degrees at gametime.

Posted by: East New York at October 9, 2009 10:31 AM

Bush- Bailouts for the banks
Obama- Bailout for the banks

Bush- Thousands of dead civilians killed by U.S. Bombs
Obama- Thousand s of dead Civilians killed by U.S. Bombs

Hate to be the sour puss here but I find it very surprising that so many intelligent people think this guy is any different...

Posted by: Joe from Brooklyn at October 9, 2009 10:31 AM

For a house like that, would it be possible to get a mortgage that also rolled in reno costs? (I know, the ad says cash only, but I'm curious)

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at October 9, 2009 10:32 AM

Snappy, that ppty is asking for all cash deal too and the block doesn't look as good as many of the nearby blocks. So on top of the massive renov in store, I say this is a bad deal. 100k would be a good deal - ie although the finished product is not that much diff than other comparables in mkt but owner would know exactly the quality of the renov put in behind the sheet rock and place is done to his/her taste.

Posted by: more4less at October 9, 2009 10:32 AM

"I for one am pleased to have a president that is engaging with the world rather than threatening it."

Wasder, I agree with this sentiment, which is what I said above. I'm not sure who you're referring to, but speaking for myself, I'm not holding anything against Obama and know all too well what he inherited. (Hell, I even got over the nasty primary battles between him and Hillary.) I will just say again, that in my opinion, awarding him the Nobel now is premature.

Posted by: CarrollGardened at October 9, 2009 10:33 AM

Benson, no dis against the General, who is top notch, but why would a peace prize go to an active participant in a war? Kinda cancels out the "peace" part of the Peace Prize, doesn't it?

Considering that during said war, thousands of civilians have been killed or maimed, and an entire country is in rubble, much of it still without basic necessities, giving him a peace prize is like giving a prize fighter a peace prize for being the last one standing.

Before you start in, I am in no way casting aspersions on General Petraeus in any way. I think he is a fine officer, and a great American, and did the best he could do, following orders for a war that should never have been fought where it was.

Posted by: Montrose Morris at October 9, 2009 10:35 AM

Bush - Oil company executive; Haliburton (war contractor) investor, war profiteer.

Obama - Ex-community organizer.

Posted by: East New York at October 9, 2009 10:36 AM

cobble I am with you but all of our thought process and reasoning is clouded by our personal experiences. That's what makes us who we are, right?

I know we don't vote communist and I know it's not going to turn to traditional communism (like Russian or China) but the thought process is very similar. Government should regulate first this then that then another that and we will all have equal access to everything. Truth is, even in Russia it didn't work and what ended up happening, few rich who controlled everything (even tough technically it was gov't owned and regulated) and a lot of poor.

cobble, you know me. I don't fight with anyone. I disagreed with Montrose and Biff but we kept it civil. Me and Benson agree on a lot but disagree on a lot too. We keep things VERY civil. I am not going to fight with anyone on the blog. MM said it right, we all have different opinions and that's what makes us great. No need for animosity.

Posted by: Kensingtonian at October 9, 2009 10:36 AM

I think Joe Biden should have gotten it.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at October 9, 2009 10:37 AM

I agree with CGar and with MM, wasder, cobble. I, like the Nobel folks, applaud the tone, direction and efforts, but still think the award is premature.

Posted by: slopefarm at October 9, 2009 10:38 AM

Posted by: CarrollGardened at October 9, 2009 10:39 AM

from the posts so far, it sounds like he might've been the best candidate from which to choose from. If a price is given out each yr and he happens to be the relative best of the bunch, I see nothing wrong with that

Cargar! Get in the corner! (thanks for outting me dude!)

I happen to agree with everything that's been said by all sides. I don't think any of you are disagreeing on any essential parts. It's just the nature of B'Stoner to keep going at it while missing the fact that there is no real disagreement taking place. I figure I've said my peace and I'm done!

Posted by: cobblehiller at October 9, 2009 10:47 AM

M4L, maybe Cgar is taking advanced training from Lech and we are not aware. I wouldn't put all your money on me just yet. I am a bit rusty. I think we need to organize a Weekend trip to Poconos shooting range one of these days. I know Lech will be up for it in a jippy.

"I'll refrain cause you are cool peoplezzzz"

Love you too, Kens. No homo.

Posted by: CarrollGardened at October 9, 2009 10:47 AM

AND...since you got me going, General Petraeus was dealt a bum hand in the first place by not having enough troops and enough protective equipment to do the job. The civilian morons in the defense dept, and we know who they were, insisted on running the war as if no one was going to fight back, or that the mere sight of American might was going to chase the insurgents into the streets in surrender. There was absolutely no long term after fighting planning. The suits acted like this was an away high school football game in Texas, where the opposing team comes in, wins, drinks a few beers, and goes home. In this case, the team was bussed into the wrong town, beat the wrong team, which retaliated at the after party, and has been kicking their asses ever since.

The Iraq war will be used as a lesson on how not to wage war in the classrooms of colleges and at West Point for the next 200 years. Not the general's fault - his bosses'.

Posted by: Montrose Morris at October 9, 2009 10:49 AM

Kens reminds me of my dad, who was (and still is) one tough Brooklynite, from the old school.

When I was about 10, we went for Pizza at the famous Stromboli Gardens. Seated next to us was a group of 3 teenagers (about 18) talking out loud about their previous night's exploits with their girlfriends. My father went over to them and politely told them to knock it off, as my mom and sister were with us. They quieted down for about 15 minutes. Soon thereafter, they started up with the talk again.

My dad didn't miss a beat. He got up, at age 42, and took on 3 teenagers single-handedly. After he gave them a few lumps, he threw them out of the place. The place erupted in applause.

My dad should have gotten the Nobel Peace Prize.

Posted by: benson at October 9, 2009 10:50 AM

wasder, you're welcome thank you for your great photos. I think that particular stone may have been shortened because the inscritption reads "graves" so there should be another name and date beneath Mr. Remsen's.

Posted by: Minard Lafever at October 9, 2009 10:50 AM

MM, you are right about the Pentagon beauracrats running the war and their inability to predict the response. Why is it that the military can't understand that when they are fighting terrorists, essentially a Holy War, that the response is not like fighting an ordinary paid army????

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at October 9, 2009 10:54 AM

kens, Sorry, I wasn't trying to be/sound uncivil. I love ya too.

I just take umbrage with what feels like a constant drum beat from the right that we're going 'commie'. It's just not even close to realistic to me, and feels disingenuous. You have every right to your opinions, but I think you have been unusually argumentative of late which is fine/good, but I had to say what was on my mind as well. : )

Posted by: cobblehiller at October 9, 2009 10:56 AM

The last thing Barack Obama needed at this moment is a prize for a promise.

He spoke about "promise" when he criticized parents for giving parties to their children when they graduated high school. He wanted them to aspire to college.

Hi Minard, Didya see that you were on the awards list of posters that quite a few posters would like to meet?! : )

Posted by: cobblehiller at October 9, 2009 10:58 AM

so who won the PLUSA Peace Price?
and PLUSA Piece Price?

Posted by: Petebklyn at October 9, 2009 10:58 AM

I heard Silvio Burlesconi was lobbying for the award for himself. Stand against a wall, ladies, if you are in his presence.

The only Nobel that still has any mystique is the one for literature. All the hard science awards get split now or go to researchers who are not public figures. They deserve it, but every October I just go, "Who?"

And Obama getting the award? Kind of just a slap in Bush's face. The Nobel committee is well known for being politically motivated.

Posted by: infinitejester at October 9, 2009 10:58 AM

CH, because the road to hell is (often) paved with good intentions. Actual results are more important. I'd rather have all the Prizes be like Lifetime Achievement awards, rather than endorsements of current politicians.

As for warmongers, if Kissinger can get it, anyone can! Yes, I know he got it for ending the Vietnam War, but his accomplishments were generally quite the opposite of what the prize is intended for.

Back to class!

Posted by: sixyearsandcounting at October 9, 2009 10:59 AM

Thanks Benson. I would probably do the same if I was your dad. I had a couple of similar situations.

Talking about healthcare. I had a huge feud at a hospital once when my grandma was very sick in the ICU and no one was taking care of her at all. They just let her rot there. I tried to be politically correct and nothing worked. I called the director of patient relations and let him have it and a few nurses on the floor who work union jobs and could care less shit. Grandma was screaming for pain medication and they were too busy drinking tea and talking about their weekend to care. Let me tell you, it got ugly. They called 3 security guys on me to escort me out. Guess what, they didn't even touch me. I explained politely what happened. Then told them that if after that, they still chose to throw me out, number 1 they have no right to touch me since they are not officers and can't lay their hand on me which gives me a right to self defend myself and throw punches back and 2 if they are going to attempt to kick me out of ICU, they will definitely need to approximate their force and I suggested that they bring another 3 guys since it'll take about 5-6 to get me out. They really reconsidered and left me alone.

CGar, what time and what is the address? I'll be the one standing behind you who'll say "booo"

Posted by: more4less at October 9, 2009 11:01 AM

In war, as in love, practice makes perfect. There is no doubt at the moment that US has the world's most formidable armed forces.
Speak softly but carry a big stick, that is the traditional American approach.
I believe the Nobel committee is endorsing that and is giving this award pro-actively rather than retro-actively. I approve.

I won the Nobel Peace Prize?

Posted by: Biff Champion at October 9, 2009 11:04 AM

The announcement was a shock to the president as well, he certainly didn't think he was a contender. It would be of more use to debate the fitness of past winners - Arafat for one, than give Obama a hard time for something he had no control over. Good choice, bad choice, the Nobel committee choice. Guess which one counts.

Posted by: Montrose Morris at October 9, 2009 11:04 AM

ok- that does it. You've been firing pot shots and can't let it rest from yesterday. I wasn't personal- I didn't call you any names. I responded to you telling me "no one told you to be freelance" so I should stop doing anything and go on welfare. You freaked out and today you're still freaking out. Yo want to tell people ow to live their lives, don't first rant about national health care and the government safety newt, then turn around and tell someone to go on welfare. Undercuts your argument big time. Now just drop it.

You are a wonderfully cheap awards banquet date, snappy. I'm sure when the Nobel folks hear you'll settle for a beer, they'll give you the science prize, too.

6Y -- You may be too young to remember Tom Lehrer, who sang humorous songs and song parodies in the 50s and 60s (more Ivy League than Weird Al), but after he retired, he said that awarding the peace prize to Kissinger made political satire obsolete.

If things get bad again today on the OT, I'll post the lyrics to National Brotherhood Week.

You know some people think the U.N. is nothing more than a fake debating society to make the third world countries particularly in Africa "feel good" about themselves when all the real power is held by the winners of WWII AKA the Security Council: England, France, China, Russia and the U.S.
In a way Obama is just like the U.N., a personal ego boost distraction for the (still) powerless third world while the real power is held by the war profiteers and their financial backers AKA Goldman Sax AKA Obama's ENTIRE Cabinet.

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at October 9, 2009 11:27 AM

Inspiring who? True, Chavez likes him, but other leaders have said he's immature and out of touch with reality. The verdict is not out on him "inspiring the world", you're really getting ahead of yourself. He's actually been silent about many of the pressing issues and problems in the world, which is more dangerous than confronting them. I guess they all got solved on election day, or he's got his head in the sand and doesnt want to do heavy lifting.

BSD, I'd like to see quotes on what "the other leaders" have said about Obama, because that's not what I hear. The leaders of the world seem to be giving him what many in this country don't want to give him - time. He's supposed to fix this country, as well as the rest of the world in 10 months? And with all of the problems here, he's supposed to involve himself and the country in every problem in the rest of the world? No one with a brain would spread himself, or the resources of this country, that thin.

Kens;

From where you are (18th Ave on F), it would probably take 1.5 hours by train to White Plains. By car, a little over an hour.

Purchase is right near White Plains, but I believe it is only accessible by car. I would add 15 minutes to the number above.

One of the reasons I moved to PS was to cut my commute, as White Plains is a pain the rear.

Have a good weekend all! Signing out!

No need to give it up unless I find a very good deal in a great location..

I'm right near St. Peters College/Lincoln Park. A lot of great homes, some great blocks, some scary blocks. I really like it here.

Hoboken is safer but for those prices I'd have bought in Brooklyn!

BJ- That video is hilarious. Someone had it posted on their blog and it just killed me. The guys are so droll.

"Besides eating it is good for cats to have some sort of hobby or pastime. For example, Zoe is an accomplished marathon lounger and spends many hours a day on a rigorous lounge training schedule. Here she exhibits a traditional feline slumber position and with this anchor technique she makes clever use of the earths gravitational field to keep herself firmly anchored to the floor of my living room."

One thing Hoboken has over brooklyn is the small town feeling combined with a main strip of retailers and restaurants.. Better safety and a much quicker commute to ny than many areas of brooklyn.. Taxes stink in Hoboken and the housing stock is not on Brooklyn's level.. Oh and the fact that you have to tell friends you live in NJ:)

ABTA 2009: Royal Caribbean to review tipping policy

(09 October 2009)
Royal Caribbean International is "evaluating" its gratuities system in the UK because the British won't tip.

Royal Caribbean Cruises vice-president and managing director UK and Ireland, Robin Shaw, told the Cruise Forum in Barcelona on Thursday that the British refusal to tip means the crew is not being remunerated as it should be.

Shaw said: "The British don't tip and that is a challenge for us. We are evaluating our options in the UK."

I kick all of the cats out of the bedroom except Cookie. She HATES all the other cats so that's her alone time with us where we dote on her and she rewards us with the highest pitched "it sounds like I swallowed a canary" cooing purr.

After we fall asleep and they hear snoring from us and Cookie they take their spots along the bottom of the bed.

If Cookie is still awake she goes down and cuts a bitch.

"I would like to see a list of people who AREN'T War-mongers/criminals who HAVE received the Nobel Peace Prize."

"Still, considering they give it out annually, a depressingly short list..."

Rationalization at its finest.

My .02:

while a startling choice, not yet justified by longer-term, overt & tangible accomplishments on Obama’s part, the award seems to me aspirational rather than merely laudatory – intended to endorse and reinforce the path the President is taking. I'll drink to that!

It is in keeping with a relatively recent trend in the Nobel awards in non-scientific fields, which can be viewed as commentaries on political or social trends in addition to being recognition for individual efforts.

Oh, and as one of my favorite bloggers put it, it is also in large part a big and richly-deserved “f**k you” to George Bush.

And on that note, allow me to take this opportunity to echo and endorse that sentiment: “George, from both the Nobel Peace Price Committee and me – f**ck you!"
Ahem. Carry on.

Now, now, you are just goading, benson. Having some fun, too, I see. You know, the reliably liberal posters on this site were pretty reflective and nuanced in their posts on this topic for the most part. Many said they didn't think the award was justified, and those that supported the award largely thought the aspirational motive was worthwhile, notwithstanding the absence of a tangible lasting achievement. So I am not sure who you think you are sparring with on this.

I would love to see similarly nuanced reflection on the right, either among posters here or in politics generally. In general, I just don't see it happening. It is easy for folks on either side to let their own sense of the correctness of their side blind them to their own rhetorical and strategic excesses while blasting those of the other side. My own take -- biased of course, like everyone's -- is that liberals see conservatives playing harball gotcha over every single issue or news development, and there is a tendency to feel the need to do the same thing back or risk ceding ground. Unfortunately, we've ended up with a sour political discourse that leaves little room for meaningful engagement.

Posted by: brownjokester at October 9, 2009 2:54 PM

I like clams and oysters, raw, steamed and fried but this discussion makes me glad I'm not having any this weekend.

I think we DEFINITELY need the gender verification police before randi shows up. There's been a back and forth on her own profile. I have been accused of being "obsessed" with what his/her gender is.

Inquiring minds want to know.

I'm telling you Snap, it's far. Probably a challenge if you're still a bit banged up in the legs. But, you take the #3 ("New Lots") train to Pennsylvania Avenue, take the bus right outside the station south (I think it's the #46 bus, but you can ask the driver for the "bus to Starret City" and he'll tell you if you're on the right one). It's about four to five stops away across Linden Boulevard. It would take about 1/2 hour to 45 minutes to get there from the Atlantic Avenue subway station.

I have a '68 Convertible now but it's an automatic. Numbers match. I'll try and post a pic next week.

I'm with you Snappy - so hard to get a good milkshake these days. Many moons ago, I used to work at a place that was known for its shakes - recipe was exactly as DIBS says (although we used Dreyers). The key is to only use enough milk so the blender blades aren't spinning in an air pocket in the ice cream.

Sugar cube soaked in bitters - crush
2 oz of bourbon
big ice cube

Cheetah legs is exactly right! He stoops over alot because they are so abnormally long. They seem to be growing much faster and not in proportion with the front legs. Poor discombobulated wee one!

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at October 9, 2009 4:37 PM

and usually better if the bartender has a handlebar moustache and is dressed like a 1920s paperboy

Posted by: dirty_hipster at October 9, 2009 4:47 PM

DH - did you end up going out after Henry Public?

Posted by: jessibaby at October 9, 2009 4:47 PM

joe- in that case yo may have missed the post where jessi and I agree t hat infusing bacon into alcohol makes it- miraculously- kosher, and we'll still trying to decide how to best respond to dib's post regarding wrapping Hari in bacon and toasting him like a marshmallow. We've restrained snappy to protect dibs.

Posted by: bxgrl at October 9, 2009 4:50 PM

DH- with enough drinks even no shadow would be sufficient. In fact I probably wouldn't be able to find my own shadow. :-)

Posted by: bxgrl at October 9, 2009 4:51 PM

I bet the chinese strategy for Hummer is to turn it from an SUV brand into a light pickup brand.

Posted by: the chicken at October 9, 2009 4:52 PM

Hari would eat the bacon long before he'd be toasted.

Posted by: Arkady at October 9, 2009 4:52 PM

And dibs would end up just smelling scorched hair & bleeding so much the fire would die.

Posted by: Arkady at October 9, 2009 4:53 PM

Hell, if a five oclock shadow is all it takes I'll have one of those by the time I' get off these damned steroids for my lungs!

DH handlebar mustaches? I'm sensing a trend here...at least my dad will be happy...

Posted by: Arkady at October 9, 2009 5:01 PM

Posted by: dirty_hipster at October 9, 2009 5:05 PM

Today just made up for the past 2 quiet weeks I've had at work. WTF? Apparently every one suddenly realized that Monday is a holiday (for some) and panicked. Man, oh, man.

Snappy, find a Friendly's and get a Fribble. A large coffee Fribble. If not coffee, chocolate.

Dave, did your convertible used to be a stick? Sexual innuendo aside, I love driving a stick.

Posted by: CarrollGardened at October 9, 2009 5:07 PM

THL - dibs doesn't understand the term "to no end".

Posted by: Arkady at October 9, 2009 5:08 PM

Not a handle bar, no but he definitely has what I call the "Fireman", that mustache that all city workers: transit, fire and police over 40 seem to have...with a respectable amount of salt-and-peppering of course. I thought he was gonna shave it off when he retired but I'm begining to think he draws Sampson-like strength from it...

Posted by: Joe from Brooklyn at October 9, 2009 5:08 PM

DeLepp, CarrollGardened, and I went to Floyd's. Lechacal showed up there after I had left.

Posted by: infinitejester at October 9, 2009 5:08 PM

Long lines at the 34th street station. Turns out the MTA can't handle the volume of credit card requests at the automatic terminals for the metrocard refills when it's rush hour.

What a bunch of f^^%^$ing idiots. This IS THE WORST SUBWAY SYSTEM IN THE WORLD

Posted by: dirty_hipster at October 9, 2009 5:13 PM

jessi, DH - jester, DeLepp and I went to Floyd's for a night cap. jester left after one, and DeLepp and I had a second. lechacal and I exchanged emails, and he says something like, "Wait there for me". The words, "OK, you intimidate me, and I am powerless under your spell" have barely left my BlackBerry when the man instantly appears in the bar (wildly waving some legal document) and then disappears just as quickly. The question is, was he really there? Or did DeLepp and I just have too much to drink?

Posted by: CarrollGardened at October 9, 2009 5:13 PM

LOL Arkady!

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at October 9, 2009 5:16 PM

Posted by: TownhouseLady at October 9, 2009 5:18 PM

Dave, I may be mistaken, but I think you can only do automatic refills with a monthly Metrocard, and you can only buy them through the MTA's website. Very convenient, I agree.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at October 9, 2009 5:21 PM

You give them a card number & they credit it to your metrocard - I think they send you a new metrocard & you may have to do a photo for it. (Mine's a senior card so I have to.) Then you use the card & any time the money amount drops below a certain figure they add another $10 or $20 to it & bill your credit card. The really weird part is that you get a statement of the month's activity saying things such as, Boarded D-train at 7:35 a.m. on such & such a date. Very eerie & Big Brother even though we all know the cards report that data.

Posted by: Arkady at October 9, 2009 5:21 PM

"Very eerie & Big Brother even though we all know the cards report that data"

Arkady, agreed, and thanks for the info. I've been meaning to get a monthly card. The only question I have is that the Metrocard is rather flimsy, so what happens when the card you have wears down or tears (as one of my credit cards just did)?

Posted by: CarrollGardened at October 9, 2009 5:24 PM

Don't worry CGar, you're fine without going on the pill.

Posted by: TownhouseLady at October 9, 2009 5:25 PM

I almost typed Male syrup ice cream with bacon.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at October 9, 2009 5:27 PM

CarGar - Dunno, I haven't had mine that long but it expires in Feb, 11. Guess they'd replace it & since it's an automatic one, they'd send it to you.

Posted by: Arkady at October 9, 2009 5:27 PM

"I see THL is all "revved up" after dealing with certain unpleasantness."

Posted by: CarrollGardened at October 9, 2009 5:33 PM

Ugh! Staten Island? Is the Fribble worth a damned ferry ride and lord knows what other alternate form of transportation I'd need once I hit that God forsaken island? (mule, yak, wildebeest, 3 legged turtle with a super strong back?)

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at October 9, 2009 5:33 PM

Manning runs a long way. If he's anywhere around 1200, very close but even 600 or 2000 isn't that far.

super friendly friendly's near by me at morristown - if anyone ever wants to drop by to see the Jets practice at their fancy facility here

There's nothing like chocolate syrup and whipped cream on a male, but definitely NOT with bacon.

Posted by: CarrollGardened at October 9, 2009 5:34 PM

CGar, I can wait til 6:30 but that's as long as I'm gonna last.

Posted by: jessibaby at October 9, 2009 5:36 PM

m4l: I'm in. will try to get a roommate or two.

Posted by: jessibaby at October 9, 2009 5:33 PM

that guarantees a good male showing

Posted by: more4less at October 9, 2009 5:36 PM

"Never say never."

I would Dave but it's not worth the effort. I

If she'd really hadn't meant it "in that way' or had mistakenly though I was a part of "the gang" as all of the guys speaking on her behalf said she'd have stepped in, piped up and apologized for the confusion or at the very least said she hadn't intended it. SOMETHING. Instead she sat back and let others do her dirty work. Which to me shows it was very intentional and quite ugly of her.

Posted by: TownhouseLady at October 9, 2009 5:37 PM

CGar, always have those Jello pudding cups on hand for just such a purpose...vanilla or chocolate

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at October 9, 2009 5:38 PM

But CGar,dear, please hold the chocolate sauce.

Posted by: jessibaby at October 9, 2009 5:39 PM

Posted by: CarrollGardened at October 9, 2009 5:39 PM

jessi, I'll finish up now, and let you know as soon as I'm done.

Posted by: CarrollGardened at October 9, 2009 5:39 PM

Hmmm...we are back to food. What's for dinner folks? I'm thinking salmon steak and baked potato and sauteed spinach and a pear for dessert.

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at October 9, 2009 5:41 PM

Posted by: bxgrl at October 9, 2009 5:44 PM

I'm cleaning out the leftovers tonight Snappy. We have everything from coldcuts, pizza, the steak, ravioli and random sides.

It all goes on the counter, you make your plate and in the nuker it goes.

Posted by: TownhouseLady at October 9, 2009 5:44 PM

jessi, how does 6:30 at the base of the bridge work for you? Same place that you, Biff and I met last time. (Though I noticed last night the tourists are gone and so is the hot dog vendor.)

Posted by: CarrollGardened at October 9, 2009 5:46 PM

Bxgirl, a fribble is allegedly the messiah of all milkshakes...still unconfirmed by me though...and will likely remain that way if I have to go to SI to get one!

THL, that sounds good! Kinda sounds like my family's ghetto version of potluck...No one is cooking anything new so grab a pot and good luck finding something in the fridge to toss in that pot!

Cargar, is today your birthday?

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at October 9, 2009 5:49 PM

You have a happy one CGar.

May you get the milkshake of your dreams and have it bring all the boys to your yard.

How's that?

Posted by: TownhouseLady at October 9, 2009 5:49 PM

Nice one, THL. His Bday is tomorrow.

Posted by: jessibaby at October 9, 2009 5:51 PM

Honestly- I'd rather have a chocolate malted than anything else in the entire ice-cream drink world.

Root beer floats are a close second followed by milkshakes.

Posted by: TownhouseLady at October 9, 2009 5:51 PM

Happy! Happy! CarGar.

Posted by: Arkady at October 9, 2009 5:52 PM

jessi- OUCH! :-)

Posted by: bxgrl at October 9, 2009 5:52 PM

Snaps! You're 600!

Posted by: Arkady at October 9, 2009 5:52 PM

ROOTBEER FLOATS RULE!!!

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at October 9, 2009 5:53 PM

Happy B-day Cargar!

Black & white ice cream soda w/ lots of whipped cream on top.

Posted by: Arkady at October 9, 2009 5:53 PM

[bxgrl, avert your eyes]

Thank you, THL! Much appreciated! So much nicer to be left with that pleasant vision (all covered in whipped cream, no chocolate sauce, or Jello pudding)!

My Snapster, tomorrow.

Snappy, I've seen that house in person - from the sidewalk. The porch and entry way were blocked with a mattress and debris. It looked like a caricature of a foreclosure. More to the point, it looked like a piece of the mansard roof was missing.

There was or is a very nice townhouse for sale a few doors down in near-perfect, move-in condition. I think they were asking $500,000 or $600,000.

If I am not mistaken, this block is one block from the projects, but not too far from the express train or the Heights. But I could be mixed up.
