We pay good money to get this posted at 9:15. And now this false advertising to those lazy people who don't wake up until 10:00 that the OT was posted at 9:15 when it didn't really post until 9:38.
Did the shop go "union??"

Today's FGVOTD features one of my favourite songs and will hopefully help keep things fun and calm.
It's the legendary Ray Charles doing the definitive version of a classic. According to Wiki:
"Georgia on My Mind" is a song written in 1930 by Hoagy Carmichael (music) and Stuart Gorrell (lyrics). It is the official state song of the U.S. state of Georgia. Gorrell wrote the lyrics for Hoagy's sister, Georgia Carmichael. However, the lyrics of the song are ambiguous enough to refer either to the state or to a woman named "Georgia". Carmichael's 1965 autobiography notes that a friend suggested: "Why don't you write a song called 'Georgia?' Nobody lost much writing about the South." Thus, the song is universally believed to have been written about the state."
A quote from Ray, "I'm not into the money thing. You can only sleep in one bed at a time. You can only eat one meal at a time, or be in one car at a time. So I don't have to have millions of dollars to be happy. All I need are clothes on my back, a decent meal, and a little loving when I feel like it. That's the bottom line."

f'ing ny times! im reading the home section this morning and there is an article about properly cleaning your clothes and some expert who wrote a 400 page book on the matter. i know youre supposed to seperate colors and whites, but this guy says you need 5 different piles. (i never seperate colors and whites) and it says that your clothes wind up turning all drab, which is true, my entire wardrobe is kinda drab and washed out, even the bright neon colored things. grr. i always thought color bleeding was an old wives tale. then he says that those concentrated small bottles of detergent are meant for NEWER front loading washing machines that use less water, not top loading older models. grrrr. i always buy the concentrated one :( and i always overload, another no no apparently, apparently my clothes arent rubbing up on each other (called agitation) so essentially not getting clean. which i guess i sorta knew cuz sometimes ill take my clothes out of the washing machine and parts of certain things are still dry. one thing i was happy this guy said is that the detergents with chemicals they sell in the supermarket are actually MUCH better than the natural organic type detergents, so at least im doing something right!! i do like this part "Environmentalists may balk at using hot water and additional rinse cycles, but ms. mendelson is a fan" hahaha. "the cleaning power of hot water simply cannot be underestimated." and "America's dirty little secret is that Americans frequently wash clean clothes". i totally agree with this, if you wear underwear there is no reason you need to wash your pants. "unless youre washing sports or gardening or dirty underwear lol, a lot of what wash isnt very dirty"
i hope you enjoy your lesson on laundry. do i get an A for my book report Arkady!?

I think Brownstoner may be part of a LBO - selling off parts of the site and will be so in debt that files for bankruptcy but the lawyers and bankers get bonuses.

"I know someone named Georgia."
But many more individuals named George, I suspect.
Posted by: Biff Champion at October 8, 2009 9:47 AM
9:38 and it reads "9:15"
Pathetic manipulation of the system.
"Those who seek absolute power, even though they seek it to do what they regard as good, are simply demanding the right to enforce their own version of heaven on earth. And let me remind you, they are the very ones who always create the most hellish tyrannies. Absolute power does corrupt, and those who seek it must be suspect and must be opposed."

Today's Merriam-Webster Word of the Day is "polemic".
Meaning
1 *a : an aggressive attack on or refutation of the opinions or principles of another b : the art or practice of disputation
2 : disputant
Made me wonder what ever happened to Polemicist.

wow- amazing video, biff. The sound was so good even I could hear the words clearly- which never happens with 99% of the videos. And then I watched the Louis Armstrong one, What a wonderful world. Nice to start the day off in tears :-)

Sorry, folks. As always, it was set up for 9:15-ish but was left in draft form so it didn't automatically publish. More detail than you probably need but bottom line it was a simple clerical oversight, not a conspiracy to derail the OT.

bxgrl, I noticed that Louis' song was linked there and watched it again. I featured Satchmo's "What a Wonderful World" as the FGVOTD on May 12 of this year (thank you to the PLUSA Records Department for that).

I think MM beat him back into his cave.
Now Barry Goldwater was a man of integrity and great intelligence. I always admired him, even if I didn't agree with him. He is sorely missed in American politics- he was a real statesman.

It was also Biff's opening song at Karaoke.

Jokester - A niece of mine who worked for P&G said to always err on the low side - before introduction of the concentrate, she said to use only half the recommended amount. Today's article suggested similar.

biff- and Louis' was always the most touching version. I wonder who posted those old videos? The quality and the sound were so good. I usually don't bother watching most of the music links because the sound for me is impossible.

Posted by: cobblehiller at October 8, 2009 10:01 AM
Poley gave me squirrels on the brain. He has some strange ideas of civilization, for sure. we once dubbed him "Pestilence" but I can't recall who the rest of the 4 horsemen were :-)
Posted by: bxgrl at October 8, 2009 10:01 AM
Love, love, love the quote from Ray "...and that's the bottom line."
That song was played at our wedding, sigh. I'd always assumed it to be about a woman, even while easily allowed to mean the state too. And Georgia, despite its many flaws, is utterly lovely and lovable.
Laundry: I am a firm believer in lotsa water, the hotter the better, and not over-stuffing. I also use more detergent than I should, and more fabric softener than I should. I'm a sucker for that Downey smell.
But Rob, just from your average sweating throughout the day, skin cell sheddage, body oils and sitting all over the city, including subways and benches, even WITH a good ol' pair of underwear, pants need to be washed every few wearings. IMHO. Otherwise they start to get stinky. To others anyway, you might not smell your own smells.

Posted by: cobblehiller at October 8, 2009 10:05 AM
Ark - I use a concentrated detergent, one with the 'he' label.
It's odd watching the cycle cause it doesn't really fill up with lots of water and get sudsy.
I grew up going to a laundromat; where you poured in a pint of detergent. Sometimes there was much suds it would ooze out the side of the machine and you pretended it wasn't yours.

Posted by: Biff Champion at October 8, 2009 10:08 AM
I know people who throw their clothes into the laundry if they worn it for 2 hours- Americans do overclean, and overuse chemicals to do it. I saw a news report a while back that said the rising numbers of asthmatic children may be tied to the overuse of cleaners. Kids can't build up any immunity to bacteria and such. On the other hand, have you ever spent a few hours with those Europeans who don't believe in deodorant? They used to come to the SoHo antique clothing store I worked at years ago and try on dresses. After 20 minutes everything stank and had to be rewashed or drycleaned. After awhile we either told them they couldn't try them on or they had to wash their underarm area first.

Really neat thing in today's Times was about a group called Fixers Collective who have a Thursday clinic to which you can take something that's broken & ask if they can fix it. I'm planning to go tonight. Google the name for how it works. If you fill out a form on line they'll have ideas about it before you get there. $5. fee. (Plus parts, presumably.)

There are over 600 comments. That's absurd.
If you're between jobs, as they say, then I'm sorry. But please, People, find something more creative to do with all your time instead of sitting in front of the computer if you don't have to...and if you're sitting at work commenting all day, then shame on you!

I think you're right. doctor's are linking food allergies to overdoing the clean routine with children. The human body needs to build up defenses against viruses, bacteria and fungal organisms.
In the old USSR, they used to inject children with some kind of virus/bacterial coctail with the 50-100 most common threats. that sure wouldn't fly here. imagine the lawsuits.

Bxgrl, I once bought this fabulous, yarnie/hippy sweater I found at a Euro-boutique called Smakk on the LES. Actually had to return the damn thing because when I got it home, the armpits stank to high heaven. I mean HIGH heaven.
I even tried to air it out first, because it was one of a kind. Nope. Back it went.
Brrrrrrrr...I shudder at the recall of that smell even now.
Posted by: Nokilissa at October 8, 2009 10:39 AM
Legion- I LOVE that song! It's on the Crooklyn soundtrack.
It's better to use too little than too much detergent. use too much and it doesn't rinse out so over time you're building up more and more soap reside on the fibers of your clothing. The soap is sticky and it actually gathers dirt and stains.
Also, don't use too much fabric softener on towels/dishrags. It also leaves a reside on the fibers that stop them from being as absorbent as they might be.
I also don't wash any clothing in hot water. Sheets towels and knickers only. No one in my home works in construction or anything that requires the boiling water sterilization treatment.
I'm also old school, I like to line dry my clothes. Keeps them looking better longer. The dryer destroys clothes.

"they say kids who had pinworms as a kid wind up being pretty immune to almost everything as an adult"
My son would love that, if true.
Seriously, all that excessive cleaning, washing and hygiene must lead to too many allergies and low immunity. Coming from a more relaxed country, I'm always amazed at how much washing/cleaning up the average person does here (see any post on how many loads of laundry done per week if you have kids.) My laundry load shrank to a 1/4 after my split, and I do change my sheets on a normal frequency.

Legion, I never even heard of the Louis Armstrong Museum. Thanks for the tip.
Ok, so I just took time out of my very busy sched to get a hair cut. I go to a true blue old school barber shop(as anyone who has seen me in person would surmise) as opposed to a fancy schmancy salon. A few observations:
1) I was pathetic enough to be reading Brownstoner during the cut and LOL'ed at DIBS' post at 10:26. Barber thought I was nuts.
2) Barber's fingers smelled of cigarette smoke. Couldn't he at least wash his hands before he cuts my hair? I guess that's what one expects at a barber shop.
3) The bastard told me I have a lot of grey hair (even more than shows) and it's somehow not showing as it's "hidden". I have no freaking clue what that meant. I guess that's also what one expects at a barber shop.

bxgrl,
from what I am hearing it seems to be a combination of increasing incidence and increasing diagnoses.
regarding asthma, there is definitely an increased incidence in certain populations which they are relating to environmental factors like proximity to major highways in the city and home exposure to allergens and fomites.
Autism is harder to quantify because it falls along a spectrum of normal human behavior and development and it's cause is not directly known. There is definitely a factor of increased diagnosis and awareness, something like 1 in 150 children today. 30 years ago, these children would have simply been put in the "special help" class and nothing further. Today there is much more awareness and intervention involved which has been proven successful, everything from aggressive socialization therapy to dietary control as some believe it stems from an intestinal condition.

Judy Davis has gotta play Arkady. And Phylicia Rashad could play a mighty Montrose. I have to work on Biff and Dibs. I'm thinkin' perhaps a bit of Vince Vaugn crossed with Kevin Kline for Biff... Dibs is more difficult.

I'm not sure what's worse...being compared to Kevin Kline or that goofball from the Food Network show.

Dirty Hipster could be nicely played by Seth Rogan on a good day, perhaps Paul Rudd could step up. Dibs...Dibs...

Good CALL, Snappy! I was going to say Jack Black crossed with Ryan Seacrest for Rob, but Black really could do the trick, fine actor that he is.
Biff, I adore Keven Kline! What is wrong with you?

Well, you don't think Cary Grant or Clark Cable should come back from the dead to play you, do ya?

2) Confuses the hell out of peeps who read any Russian lit as it's a men's name

CG_Ups
Bxgrl
CGar
six
Amzi
Mr. B

CarGar - robin williams

I still like John Malkovich for dibs. Methinks it is perfect! Back up could be Paul Schaffer ;)

This post failed earlier.
Legion,
Are you a jazz fan? We might actually agree on something (although we'd probably start arguing moderns vs. moldy figs -- and if you get the reference, then we really do have something in common).
As for Dibs, I was sort of thinking late 80s Richard Dreyfuss (circa Tin Men). Lean, gray, kind of aggressive and edgy. Not the pudgy bearded guy in Jaws and Goodbye Girl. No? Paul Giamatti? No? Malkovich seems too reclusive, holding too much back.
Posted by: slopefarm at October 8, 2009 11:19 AM

M4L, you mean Rudy? No! I'm def Queen Latifah!

Hey, someone forgot to cast a commie PLUSA here. I know I am going to regret asking this but who is going to be playing me?
Posted by: Kensingtonian at October 8, 2009 11:44 AM
Snappy, I'm seeing either Kim Fields (Tootie from Facts of Life) or the actress who played Dee on What's Happening playing you.
Tina Fey is a good Cobble.
I can see Richard Dreyfuss (think of him in The American President, and a Republican there to boot) as DIBS.

"I think Richard Gere would be better suited for Biffy."
I'll take it (sans hamster)!

YES THL! THAT'S HIM!

I always pictured 11217 as a Nathan Gunn type. He's a very sexy opera singer, a baritone.

Dustin Hoffman for wasder.
Abbie Hoffman for slopefarm.

jessi = nelly furtado
Posted by: dirty_hipster at October 8, 2009 11:46 AM
OK, we overlap some, legion. My taste starts around early Ellingon, but goes more modern than you -- includes Dolphy, 70s loft scene, 80s to present mainstream and some experimental (not many republicans like that stuff ;) ). I admire Wynton's technique and smarts, but I'm not a big fan. Also, I appreciate Satchmo, but N'awlins style isn't generally what I listen to. And, per your earlier post, I'm always happy to hear some classic boogaloo, but I need to learn the terrain better.
Posted by: slopefarm at October 8, 2009 11:46 AM
DH should be Joshua Jackson
Lance Riddick would be lechacal- same laser stare.
Cobble's BH- Jude Law

bxgrl,
thanks, I've always been a big fan of LL, especially around the time of Rock The Bells, but my appearance is more of a hispanic Russell Wong, if you can believe it, lol.

Arkady, I've never heard of this guy, but I just used Google Images, and I'll take him! And I'm agreeing with whoever cast Helen Mirren as you.

"ENY = fishburn (or whatever is the spelling) from matrix"
People who know me have compared me (in terms of looks) with Eddie Murphy (years ago) and more recently, with Don Cheadle. I'm not a fan of Denzel. Good actor, but I don't like "BMOC" types. Lawrence Fishburne is OK. He actually lives in Brooklyn.
I tend to think of Dave (although I've never met him) as a Claude Rains type. Without the class, that is.

I can see Don Cheadle as ENY.
Biff, Dustin Hoffman is a little old for me no? Perhaps mid career Dustin I could accept.

Kathy Najimy as bxgrl

"CarGar - John Galecki from Big Bang Theory"
I know that I'm not quite your type CGar but I've always had a huge crush on Galecki. He also played David Darlene's boyfriend on Roseanne.

You won't be joking when the Phillies beat the Yankees.
Eddie Murphy is hot, and most likely closeted gay. no homo
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at October 8, 2009 11:56 AM
wasder, I was thinking more like Dustin in The Graduate.
But who will play Mrs. Robinson?
Posted by: Biff Champion at October 8, 2009 11:56 AM
Helen Mirren- that was me, ehubs! No wonder we're still married :-)
I want Patrick Stewart for you, but he'll have to wear a wig. Wait! NO- Johnny Galecki is perfect!

Dev Patel is going to play the Indian guy I met in The Oak Room last night. Trying to coax him on here.

I can see ENY as Don Cheadle. Legion- In that case I see Amzi playing you!

THL, what makes you think you're not my type? ; ) BTW, other than Wednesday, did we cast you yet?
Posted by: CarrollGardened at October 8, 2009 12:07 PM
wasder,
No. I don't get out to hear jazz as much as I used to. It's on my to-do list, along with Sista's out in Bed-Stuy for some experimental sounds. Now I sneak out for an hour at a time to Puppet's, three blocks from home. Music is a bit short of a-list, but sometimes great, and they treat you nicely in there.
Btw, I did meet Abbie Hoffman once. I don't think I look look him, though. Also, I may be fairly liberal, but I'm not inclined to disrupt the NYSE by tossing dollar bills down.
Posted by: slopefarm at October 8, 2009 12:07 PM
slopefarm,
excellent. you see, it's always possible to find common ground. who can say no to Satchmo, Bird and Lady Day?
Posted by: Legion at October 8, 2009 12:08 PM
Slopefarm, it was less about the looks and more about the politics, passionate debating and connection to the courts that prompted it. Meant to be a huge compliment. My old band wrote and performed a song dedicated to Abbie.

Viggo Mortensen = Kens. Good casting call.

g10, I don't have an iphone either but given my itouch runs similer apps, I would say it's very good. only issue is you're paying a pretty big premium on the rate plans - ie for the same data svcs, you'll be paying more due to iphone vs. non-iphone. if you could/would wait a little longer, you should cause there should be much more competition forthcoming - such as new google android phones coming to at&t and verizon, palm pre will show up in verizon (not sure about AT&T, new blackberry storm,....
I suspect many of those goodies should be out soon as I think they would want to capitalize on holiday season buying binges

Very true. Call me crazy though, when I'm at one bar I don't keep talking about how great the other bar is and all the fun times I have when I'm over there. Nor do I run back and forth telling each what's going on at the other. When I hop I leave the other behind.
I think that's rude and inconsiderate to the management.
Maybe you're a different kinda patron then I am though.
Posted by: TownhouseLady at October 8, 2009 1:59 PM
THL, you know I like you. But no need for a blanket insult. For the record, not everyone is doing what you're saying. For instance, I don't think I've done any trashing of either blog nor have I ever quoted over there anything one has said here and vice versa. No need to paint everyone with the same brush. Just like not everyone here acts the same. Ok, back to Georgia on my Mind.

g10, if tmobile allows you to float month-month till into Dec, do it. you might still end up with the iphone but at least you'll be deciding post having oppty to play with new gizmo's from all the providers before deciding - regret is an annoying little bitch you want to avoid if you can and that's the reason why I'm suggesting you wait to play with the new gizmos if they're indeed coming out before yearend.

Happy to see that I'm on the top of your list!
First, thank you for advising me that I'm an attention-seeker. I'll especially take that advice from someone who has their own personal blog, and who is one of the top posters on this site.
On to your other point, please repeat this idea to yourself, and this goes for others: you are not the owner of this site, and no one appointed you or any others as the hall monitor. You and others are not here to hand out the script. When that point is clear, I'll be back.
When this all started to happen, I was one of the defenders of this OT. What did I get for it? A gratuitous ad hominen attack for stating an unpopular opinion.
Moreover, there are those who try to police this site to be politically correct.
When this is a true OT, I'll be back. In the mean time: no homo, baby!

Posted by: Arkady at October 8, 2009 2:17 PM
Dibs,
I don't think it was gemini and minard's Italian comments that drove benson today. He, bx, jtb, and montrose were having an intense, intelligent and civil exchange on the affordable housing therad, and some newbie showed up and called him a schmuck. He had enough and left. His choice, but it wasn't the regulars who drove him off. It was a relatively intelligent discussion on all sides up to that point. You spar about politics, poverty and social policy on any blog long enough, someone's gonna call you a schmuck, or worse, no matter what your views are.
I guess the nice thing about what's OT, and indeed the entire blog, is nobody has a substantive word to say about anything at all.

Slopefarm;
Sorry, you've got it wrong. I'm a big boy, and can take being called names. In fact, I tried to deflect the affordable housing thread by calling myself a schmuck.
Consider instead something that happened two days ago on the OT. I wrote an e-mail to Pete about Obama's foreign policy (to which he later responded).
What was interesting to me, however, was that Montrose wrote a post stating that she would not respond to me. Interesting to me. When I don't want to respond to someone, I just don't respond.
Soon thereafter, Bxgrl comes along, also repeats that she won't respond, launches into an ad hominen attack, and then indeed responds.
Thread monitor much? Political correctness much?
Hey, if I can't express my ideas freely, and the only thing this thread is going to be about is bon mots back and forth, then I'll just go to the What's thread. It's more fun. No thread monitors.

benson (assuming you are still lurking),
Glad you clarified, and I wouldn't presume to speak for you. We've disagreed on many things but I do like your posts. Not sure how bx and montrose keep you from posting freely. Bx can get a bit excitable, as can you, hence your shared award, but you did return after the exchange you cite to engage thoughtfully with her today. I am not saying you have any obligation to be here or to put up with anything you don't like. But I think you overstate the case about "thread monitors." I may be wrong, but I don't recall anyone telling you you are not entitle to have, or express, your point of view.
Fwiw, yesterday I posted a recommendation for "The Big Sort" by Bill Bishop. He talks about a lot of the social factors that have lead to increasing polarization, left and right, over the last 30 years. Among other things, he talks about how, after we have all sorted ourselves by residence and various activities and associations into increasingly like-minded communities (again, both left and right), we tend -- and there is lots of psych. and sociological research on this -- both to move towards the extremes and come to perceive the otehr group as more extreme than it is. I am afraid that communication by computer -- email, blogs, etc. further amplifies this trend. I am not at all singling you, or conservatives on this site in general, for this. I do bemoan how often these discussions deteriorate into mere sparring and namecalling.
Enjoy life over there. I won't be joining you. Hope to see you at a real bar again, either a PLUSA gathering or otherwise.
Posted by: slopefarm at October 8, 2009 2:55 PM
You're being too modest Biff (also a very Clooney-like quality, I might add).
Posted by: herkimermaid at October 8, 2009 2:57 PM
Legion, nothing to do with conservative views. Nationalizing healthcare will drive this country into the shitter and I for one, will not like that. I left a communist country for a reason and don't want it back. That's how shit starts. You nationalize healthcare, what's next, nationalize other competitive fields? Fuck the land of opportunity, reward laziness.
If someone wants national healthcare and is still bitching, go live in Russia or any country that provides that. People love to bitch and moan but not do anything about it.
I am sick of this nonsense already. You people live in the greatest country in the world, have greatest luxuries in the world and bitch and moan. M4L and myself understand that wholeheartedly. If you had something to compare to, you would praise U.S. real fast once you see that 95% of the world living is not as peachy as here.
Now, I better be nominated for next years Best Rant awards!!!!

Slopefarm;
As usual, you make some good points. From a techncial point of view, you are right: no one can stop me from posting whatever I damn please here, so maybe I should clarify my point further.
One participates in a community when one feels that their views are given a respectful hearing. That statement perhaps sums up my issue the best. Take a look at what happened on that OT, and you tell me who was being respectful to whom. You're a smart guy, and I'm sure you know that there is a sociological phenomenon for how communities self-enforce (as an engineer, I don't know the term, but I think you know what I'm talking about).
See you around. I plan to be at the Union Bar, but on the late side.

Herk, the awards were announced the other day (Tuesday, maybe?). The Ultimate PLUSA would be the one who could name the winners and honourable mentions in each category. Not even I could do that.

kensingtonian,
I have a friend from an old USSR satellite republic. you just summed up his opinion exactly.
My opinion is that we have to decide which of the following is the most basic of human qualities;
fear or laziness
because both lead to a jackboot on the back of our necks and both are found in far too much abundance in a complacent population.
namely the USA.
Posted by: Legion at October 8, 2009 3:09 PM
The PLUSAs were only yesterday, Biff, LOL.
Posted by: CarrollGardened at October 8, 2009 3:10 PM
Kens, I grew up in Canada, so I suppose it's all a matter of perspective. I feel I'm coming from a place with a much better system than the US and you're coming from a totally opposite place, so it's understandable we might feel differently. It's interesting how one's views are so dependant on one's benchmark for comparison.

Shoot I thought it the awards were for the thing at Union Hall next week. Is there a list? I missed submitting but want to see who won.
Posted by: herkimermaid at October 8, 2009 3:11 PM
Having traveled extensively and lived in Asia, I consider it (including the PRC) to be the most capitalistic, enterprising and entrepreneurial part of the world. I can definitely see the reference to laziness and complacency here. The sense of entitlement is mind boggling.

A few months after my mother died, I was wearing my winter coat, which happened to have been at her house on Mother's Day weekend, and I open the front pocket and there I discover 2 crumpled $5 bills. My mother had found a way to send me home with the $10 for the plant without my knowing about it - those $5 bills were the last thing she ever gave me, and they're still in my coat pocket.

Who gives a crap where anyone posts, and what they have to say about what they post and where? I've posted 1-2 times at the What's blog, but don't go there too often because I spend enough time screwing around here. If someone wants to post on both OT's and talk about what's happening THERE over HERE, no big deal. While that stuff pisses THL off (and I happen to like THL), I just don't care. It's kind of funny, if anything. That said, I do like the stripper picture The What posted the other day.

No benson- no one did any as hominem attacks on you. You take everything and everyone who doesn't agree with you as an ad hominem attack. I can remember several such explosive attacks by you on other posters, including THL, BRG and Montrose. So you have no cause to whine about anything over here. On the affordable housing thread you went after Orestes, who had not said anything to you or about you.
slopefarm- it isn't what you say to me, its how you say it. If you think I'm a little excitable, perhaps everyone needs to take a good, long look at their own records as well. Lots of glass houses around here, if you catch my drift. Some of us seem more capable of overlooking their own characteristics than they are of overlooking others.
Posted by: bxgrl at October 8, 2009 3:26 PM
Dave, I was going to put you into a mention as well because I know you traveled and lived in parts of Asia so you know exactly the comparison of average life there and here.
Legion, I think it's laziness. I am a lazy person but you will never see me bitching as to WHY I have a studio co-op and someone has a 3 million dollar brownstone. If that's was my only goal in life, I would take out enormous loans, go through 15 years of schooling to become a surgeon, lawyer, whatever or open up a business and work 200 hours a week to get to that goal.
Biff, I consider you (Canadians) the other 5%. To me Canada is just an extension of U.S. (not meaning that in offensive way or in any political way). Also, Canada is not all that peachy because I have friends there and issues arise there as well. If you want higher expertise you have to wait for months to get appointments. If you want top notch surgeons, they don't take gov't insurance and take only cash. Look at it this way, if I had a set of skills that were irreplaceable and someone's life counted on them, why the heck would I practice in a place like Canada when I can just move to U.S. and make literally millions and millions of dollars or stay in Canada and fuck the insurance and require cash?
Posted by: Kensingtonian at October 8, 2009 3:27 PM
A thread monitor would be someone w/ official powers to ban, delete, etc.; what we have is people w/ differing tastes & beliefs. The "di" in dialogue refers to there being at least two people & it can be measured or shrill. Huffs, tantrums, ad hominem exchanges & the like are often responses to counter-viewpoints. So?
Posted by: Arkady at October 8, 2009 3:28 PM
Kens, you are definitely right and I recognize the Canadian system has it's share of flaws too. I just think overall that, despite the very real concerns and problems you rightly mentioned, it results in greater access to healthcare for a much larger percentage of the population. I'll still take it, blemishes and all, over the US system.
Posted by: Biff Champion at October 8, 2009 3:32 PM
Oh, and, in some ways, especially when it comes to financial markets, Canada is definitely an extension of the US. But in other ways, it is noticeably different.

ANA Airlines(9202) has announced a promotional programme called “e-Flight” to reduce the amount of carbon dioxide expelled by its aircraft. As part of this programme it is
asking passengers to visit the lavatory before boarding. According to the CNN report of the story, “the airline estimates that if 50 per cent of passengers relieved themselves before boarding, it would reduce carbon dioxide by 42 tons a month”. Not a lot of people know that.

Biff you are right and I think Canada is just generally better quality of life than U.S. Problem is, for a country like ours, it's hard to mimic Canadian healthcare system because population wise and economy wise, it's a totally different beast. It's like comparing a bee hive to an ant colony.
America is a land of opportunity and you will note quickly that not many Canadians emigrate here unless they get lucrative careers or go to well known colleges here. You probably wont see a Canadian immigrant here working as a waiter, construction worker or a grocery clerk while you will see plenty of Russians, Asians and immigrants from some other countries where quality of life is not as great as here.
Can the national healthcare system work in Luxembourg or Litchenstein? Hellz to the yeah and probably work great there because it's much easier to approximate the population, give out subsidies where you have the biggest town consisting of maybe 5,000 people.
Like Legion said, healthcare system does need fixing and can be done in somewhat better ways for everyone without Nationalizing it. Will it help everyone all the time? NO, that's just not possible. There are always going to be losers and winners, That's life.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at October 8, 2009 3:54 PM
let's get down to brass tacks folks,
what we are witnessing in the USA today is a movement from above towards redistribution. The president has said as much.
now consider these facts, before we go off blaming evil capitalists and their disregard for the poor;
-the poor in america receive something like 30thousand a year in entitlements between housing, education, job training, food and health subsidies.
-poor in america means you get three meals a day, you have a 1 bedroom apartment and you only have one tv.
-poor in Sierra Leone or Equatorial New Guinea means you live in a ditch by the side of the road with no means of subsistence.
-we have an epidemic of OBESITY in America, not one of starvation. I cannot site a single case of starvation in this nation in recent history, save for mental illness.
the redistribution appeals to many people as it did to many people in Venezuela because it means basically pressing the RESET button in the game of life.
let's shuffle the board once again and see if I can come out on top.
let me tell you, the only people coming out on top will be thuggish opportunists and vermin politicians.

Posted by: Arkady at October 8, 2009 3:58 PM
Pete, you are very right on that. I again, am not comparing U.S. to Canada and maybe Canada does have a better system which is still not perfect. All I am saying is that no system is perfect and if U.S. decides to nationalize healthcare, it will be a lot of trouble for this country. There is a way to better it and maybe we can even come close to perfect healthcare system or at least improve ours and give access to most people but Nationalizing it and what the proposals are is not the way to go, in my opinion. I don't want to repeat anymore but Legion made enormous amounts of arguments that will help the system. There are smart advisers to the government, why not try those?

"You probably wont see a Canadian immigrant here working as a waiter, construction worker or a grocery clerk while you will see plenty of Russians, Asians and immigrants from some other countries where quality of life is not as great as here."
Kens, that is because it would be virtually impossible for a Canadian to legally emigrate to the US for those types of jobs. Even the most qualified of professionals have to jump through hoops, especially since 9/11 to be sponsored for a Green Card. I know all of this first hand. And most people in Canada will not and do not have to illegally come to the US to take on such positions to support themselves and their families back home when they can get the same jobs (in the fields you mentioned) with equal pay and better benefits in Canada.

Benson, honestly, you take things that aren't even directed to you personally, and then complain that people are making ad hominem attacks. I said the other day I wasn't going to debate politics, because it served no purpose, and no one was going to change their minds. I fail to see how that is either hall monitoring, or even more absurd, some kind of personal attack on you, or anyone else. It was only my voiced personal opinion to not want to engage in your Obama bashing. Today in the housing thread, you found yourself outnumbered in the thread, although Joe is closer to you on point than others, and instead of debating points, which was going on pretty civilly, you get all in a huff over imagined personal slights and huff off to the What's blog to complain that we were being politically correct.
I don't care if you disagree with me. I don't care if you agree with me. I enjoy debating with anyone, and having the opportunity to express my opinions, and stating my case. I happen to think I do it decently well. For some reason, it really bothers you that other people agree with me, and yes, you do take that personally. That is your issue, not mine. If it floats your boat to think that we have hall monitors, or to call bxgrl, myself and others "sandy vaginas", and yuk it up with your new buddy, the What, on his little blog, go right ahead. You might want to remember that that is the same guy who said some pretty personal and unflattering things to you in the not so distant past. It's nice to see that you can forgive and forget, and bond over your mutual hatred of Brownstoner, preservationists, and those of us that like both him and the blog, and don't plan on doing anything different in the future.

bxgrl, sorry no one HAS to die. People here get medical care being in Jail for goodness sakes. Care is provided to anyone. If you are dying, and can't take care of your illness with you self employment, for goodness sakes, STOP doing anything for a living, get welfare and medicare and go get help. No one is stopping you. No one told you to be self employed. There are loads of government programs to help.
Sorry but I write a bunch, yet you pick at one last couple of words that I wrote. Are some people just generally down on luck and unfortunate? Yes. Do we need to nationalize healthcare for those and not look at other financial options? NO.

Legion- I agree, to be poor in this country is not the same as being poor in Sierra Leone. But poverty in this country is no joke and hardly the well fed picture you are painting. I don't see how having a safety net for basic and humane needs is a redistribution of wealth. I do think that so long as we are invested in the idea of competition and not cooperation, we are undercutting ourselves as a country. When the words "greater good" have no meaning, I don't see much hope for us.

biff,
I see it this way,
The Mexican government has alot to answer for to it's people.
Let me tell you, If I was Mexican, I would be a revolutionary. I would not settle for being marginalized in my own nation and forced to seek a life elsewhere.
mexico has plenty of money and resources.
They are simply corrupt and don't give a damn about their poor.
as far as Canada, I know Canada is doing well with it's resources but is facing increasing pressures from unchecked immigration. You will be facing some tough questions in the next decade as well.

Redistribution of wealth??? I think we need some definitions here.
First of all, I don't think anyone will disagree that when the government is involved, it is the least efficient system imaginable. There have been many luminaries quoted on this, not fanbatics like Rush Limbaugh and Anne Coulter but the Founding Fathers...Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin FRanklin and that ilk.

Legion, I partially agree with your last point although the profile of immigrants to Canada is far different in terms of education, experience, wealth, profession, etc. I'm not saying they are better or worse as a people, I'm saying they typically are experienced professionals who have emigrated there legally (many from East Asia). If they don't have a job they are going to, they also can come with tons of money they inject into the economy through opening businesses (such as what happened with the enormous influx of wealthy Chinese prior to 1998). Anyway, my point was simply to point out to Kens the reason Canadians do not typically illegally emigrate to the US for service / construction type jobs.

I am too busy working, making life for myself, my family, supporting (emotionally and physically, not monetarily) my aging parents and living in the land of opportunity than looking at healthcare reports. I am not much of a philosopher, writer or conversationalist. I know what I have to do to succeed in this country and I am too busy doing that. I used to like Charlie, and I'm the first to argue for innocent until proven guilty, but the near daily revelations of his improprieties are astounding. $1,100 undeclared dollars a night to rent his place in the Dominican Republic! There seems to be some consensus of opinion in much of this country, not just here on this site, that there are vast amounts of poor people lazily partying hardy on our dime, while the rest of us work like dogs to allow them to do that. While being poor here is nothing like being poor in Haiti, it still is no bed or roses, or an all night kegger. People do starve here, I'm sorry, but they do. They also freeze to death, die of heat prostration, malnutrition, and from rat bites. They suffer from poor nutrition, die early from high blood pressure and diabetes and stroke, and have third world like birth mortality rates. They live in neighborhoods we zoom by in our cars so we don't have to see them, and we ignore them on our streets. They live in mountain shacks without electricity, in rusting trailers and in sweltering shotgun shacks. They are wailing on tv when their children are shot going to the store, and are the criminals doing the perp walk for mugging 101 year old ladies. For all of the welfare cheese, subsidized housing, medicaid and afterschool programs we have, we don't come anywhere near solving their problems or making their lives much better. We can't seem to solve poverty.
In comparison, we, who are educated, come from comfortable backgrounds, or have risen on the strength of our resolve and determination, are here thinking that it's a party getting all of those gobment freebies, well, think again. Yeah, there are the UNdeserving poor who make the news, and give charity a bad name, but there are a whole lot more who need every cent of aid this government and private sector give, and so so much more, just to exist. And existing ain't no party for them.
That's my rant for the day.
Posted by: Montrose Morris at October 8, 2009 4:32 PM

Posted by: TownhouseLady at October 8, 2009 4:37 PM
Kens- touchy much? That was a generalized statement and not pointing fingers. I was replying to your comments on health care and you telling me to go on welfare. After your rant about people in this country wanting entitlements? You make pronouncements about about how health care will ruin the country and I mention there are new reports out about how it can save money and your response is to go thermonuclear?
Now you want to make it personal by telling me how everyone has a problem with me? Fine. You aren't the only one with stress. (Hey slopefarm- what was that excitable thing?)
Posted by: bxgrl at October 8, 2009 4:38 PM
MM I agree with you 100%. You know I admire you to no end and I don't mind paying a single penny of my taxes to help the poor and unfortunate. Without the help of taxpayers/charities, I wouldn't be able to survive in this country since my family got some very small assistance when we got here for my mom to take English courses and get certified in her field. Bloomberg increased my co-op taxes by 33% this year and I am going to pay more and I HOPE that money goes to programs to help the communities and unfortunate or keep the street clean, keep crime down, etc. I am just saying that when you private things or have tort reform, you can usually achieve much more without gov't intervention. I am glad that people are passionate about politics even though I am regrettably not, because that's what makes this country great. People would revolt if we got a Stalin or Putin in the throne.
I work hard, pay taxes, donate a bunch of money for things I am passionate about and make sure I can first provide for my future family and myself in terms of the basic needs for survival and even more luxury things. I do have a car but if I had to give it up to pay for my increased medical insurance, so be it. I wouldn't expect the gov't to intervene and make insurance nationalized just so I can have insurance AND a car. My rant is over.

it's a cultural divide that can't be bridged without living it. what Kens said is very true from a hungry-for-better-living immigrants who have that mindset since the day they arrived in this country. Not every immigrant has that mindset or the conviction to go make it happen. But for the ones with that mindset, it's very tough for them to see or accept how someone can't make life better than be at mercy of material assistance from govt or private entities. We simply see too many oppties and not big enough obstacles to prevent us from making life pretty good in this country.
not saying this view can be transplanted to folks here in poor condition or if it's the right view for them but this is simply the view for many of us immigrants who have very little at our home countries and are amazed at the oppties here.

Bxgrl, us immigrants do the welfare path too. we smart enough to utilize both tracks. if we cant improve enough not need welfare, we divert all assets elsewhere and pretend to be dirt poor to get welfare. Kens' point was if things got that bad where serious health issues came about, dont be stupid with your life but rather do what it takes to get the health taken care of - ie pretend to be dirt poor and get the medicare to get the health svc. Not saying that's right or wrong but I agree if those are some of the choices to consider, I would do what it takes to save my ass then ponder later if actions was righteous or not

Partly because no one really wants to keep track of that in the wealthiest country in the world. But there are plenty of stats available on malnutrition, which directly leads to death, in the form of heart conditions, diabetes, infant mortalities, and a host of other preventable medical ailments.

Jeez, real linoleum + installation is expensive.
$7,000 to $10,000 for two kitchens, two microscopic baths, and a mudroom.
Just thought you'd all want to know that.

Ok, here comes the hearthless, grouchy republican again.
I have to quote FSRG here: words matter, and the word "starve" is an extreme one. It has a quite different meaning from mal-nourished or under-nourished.
ENY: you provided links to news stories of negligent parents wherein the kid starved. I think that is a far cry from starvation due to economic distress. One of these kids lived in the Bronx, where every single day of the year free lunches are served in the local public school.
THL: I know I'm going to take alot of heat for this, but I am not convinced by literature from charitable organizations, as they are self-serving. Moreover, I think it doesn't talk about "starving" people, it talks about undernourished people.
MM: I really wish you would stop implying that this is an uncaring country. As I write this trivial message, there are men and women dying in the service, and they get little gain out of it. Whether or not you agree with the war, the fact is that these people volunteered for this service, to fight for freedom at risk of their own life, and we're talking about over a million folks. Where the hell are other countries when it comes to doing the heavy lifting? As Kens said, this is the greatest country in the whole damn world.
This is exactly what I mean: words from certain posters are taken as gospel, in which they try to impugn the motives of those who simply have a different philospohy.

Can we discuss Title IX? Anyone know of a wealthy relative or friend who gave away all their assets in anticipation of needing or wanting Title IX to pay for nursing home care a few years down the road. I believe the look-back period has been extended from 3 to 5 years, perhaps longer. I'm not saying I condone it, though I was almost a beneficiary of a relative's largesse once - almost, but we went the reverse mortgage route instead.

THL - Try PaperBackSwap.com. You list your books by isbn & request books by author or title. Person sends you a book - free. When someone requests one of yours, you pay the postage. The site does all the tallies & you click on the request & it tells you how much postage to put on & then you print out the label. You can buy postage on the site or put stamps on. It's really wonderful.
Mopar - Real lino is incredibly expensive - most people use a small bit as an area rug nowadays. Resilient vinyl flooring in sheet goods is very good & replicates lino quite well.

"this is the greatest country in the whole damn world."
And with that, we are brought full circle. Here is Ray Charles doing what has been called the definitive version of America the Beautiful:

Biff, is there a TV in that VIP area at Union where we might be able to plug in the Wii so some of the PLUSA's can settle the score via an unfriendly boxing match?
Posted by: more4less at October 8, 2009 5:47 PM
M4L;
Well if that is what you want, then perhaps you talk to people who make statements like:
"There seems to be some consensus of opinion in much of this country, not just here on this site, that there are vast amounts of poor people lazily partying hardy on our dime"
Where did anyone on this site make that statement?
Posted by: benson at October 8, 2009 5:47 PM
M4L, where I come from, scores are not settled via video games. We put on our skates and grab a stick and battle it out on the ice.

- an unfriendly boxing match?
I'd like to knock out a few people myself.
Posted by: brownjokester at October 8, 2009 5:51 PM
biff, indeed, why they chose kate smith's "god bless america" over "America the Beautiful" at the 7th inning stretch is beyond me.
did anyone see the usopen where david archuletta sang america the beautiful? He changed the words. Why oh why do entertainers feel the need to personalize a perfectly wonderful song.
Guess I got my rotd in.

"ENY: you provided links to news stories of negligent parents wherein the kid starved. I think that is a far cry from starvation due to economic distress."
Benson, if you take a closer look into those stories, several of the people involved were in distressed circumstances, which undoubtedly contributed to the outcome. You're a good guy, but I think you're dead wrong on this. There are people who starve in America.

"I also can't do the kindle thing. I spend enough time at a screen I like the feel and smell of a book in my hands."
THL, I love books and will keep buying them (though $10 for a paperback seems high), but I'm about to go Kindle. Just saw what you can do with the New York Times on the Kindle - including your own My Clippings folder(s) - and I gotta say I'm tired of the Times and Times' clippings cluttering up my apartment. It's also nice for travel - you can take up to 1,500 books with you at any given time since you never know what you'll be in the mood to read on the beach.

Benson, maybe my word selection is not the best but my point is debate crosses over the preaching / recruiting when people try too hard to convince the counterparty to agree with his/her view point and that's how things can get personal unnecessarily.
each throw out his/her best punches then hope the audience sides with them.
I usual have my say and I don't necessarily need or wait for active confirmation that people agree with me. I ain't vying for votes for office or something.
you, MM, bxgrl are good people in my eyes and when the debates get personal, it's sad for me to see it

You can't start thinking about these things too soon, CGar! [ducking...oh crap, he knows where I live! ; ) ]
Posted by: cobblehiller at October 8, 2009 5:54 PM
Benson, nowhere did I state, imply, suggest, or otherwise say that this is an uncaring country, or impugn anyone's motives. Once again, you put words in my mouth in order to make what I write in black and white seem wrong. Why bring up soldiers fighting in the war? That has nothing to do with anything we've been talking about, and is just flag waving for the sake of trying to belittle my point.
I'm sure those who are mal and undernourished would find little difference between their condition and starving. Since both of those conditions generally lead to an early death, or a miserable life, I hardly think it worthy of a debating point upon which to score on.
This is the greatest country in the world. However, like any country or any human enterprise, it is not perfect. Someone who really loves this country should be free to express their opinion, and be able to find ways to make it even better for everyone. That is what we are supposedly fighting for, is it not?

I looked at those statistics, and I remain in my stand. It does not use the word "starve", it uses the word "food insecurity", whatever that means.
Furthermore, if you really want to get into it, their main metric seems to be income/poverty levels, and that just reinforces my point. Whenever the government measures income/poverty levels, they always do so WITHOUT including government aid, such as welfare, foodstamps, etc. This is a fact. Anyone doubt it, I invite them to prove me wrong.
Look, I'm not saying that there aren't people hurting out there, and that they don't need help. If someone wants to appeal to my better angels to help out, let them do so. I'm not a bad guy, despite appearances (:-). However, what I don't appreciate is an appeal that suggests that if I don't agree with the pitch, or think that there is a better way, well, then I'm heartless, or morally deficient.

DeLepp, I totally agree with you. There are also those who don't change the words but re-interpret to an extreme - Roseanne and the National Anthem anyone?

I just locked the doors to the deck, so unless he tries to squeeze in next to the air conditioner, I think I'm safe!

Food Insecure is the similar to being financially insecure. Sometimes they can provide food for themselves/family other times not. Leading to malnutrition.
"Furthermore, if you really want to get into it, their main metric seems to be income/poverty levels, and that just reinforces my point. Whenever the government measures income/poverty levels, they always do so WITHOUT including government aid, such as welfare, foodstamps, etc. This is a fact. Actually they do quote those statistics. You can find it in the section headed: Use of Emergency Food Assistance and Federal Food Assistance Programs
"However, what I don't appreciate is an appeal that suggests that if I don't agree with the pitch, or think that there is a better way, well, then I'm heartless, or morally deficient."
Your words not mine. Guilty conscience?

"There seems to be some consensus of opinion in much of this country, not just here on this site, that there are vast amounts of poor people lazily partying hardy on our dime"
Where did anyone on this site make that statement?
It is said, and implied just about every time rent control, housing lotteries, affordable housing, and any kind of program or idea to house, doctor, or feed lower income people is mentioned on this site. Would that the search feature could bring up all of the instances. You would just have to punch in the word "unfair" as whined by so many. And, believe it or not, I read and see a whole lot of things that are not on Brownstoner, hence the "much of this country" part. I know you are wanting chapter and verse. I'll provide when you actually answer some of my real points in a debate, instead of trying to deflect with flag waving or by simply changing the subject or accusing someone of attacking you personally.
I think we've flogged this to death. Good evening everyone.

Benson, I guess the point is you asked for statistics and there they are. No personal attack, no deflection from the facts. Just real data from reputable sources.
Digest them, discredit them, whatever you want. It has nothing to do with your circumstances of which I have no interest and serve no relevance to the hunger topic. Remember we're trying to keep this non-personal after all.

Everyone:
Made my daily check-in at Brownstoner at a cafe table far from NY and found myself totally absorbed in the OT -- so much so that I continued reading into the street, where it's raining, forcing me into a galleria.
I must look very strange leaning against a shop window pecking this out, but I just have to say "thanks" for the entertaining and informative thread. (The casting of Brownstoners was terrific. But who'll direct? John Waters?)
Regards from the Brooklyn Diaspora,
Nostalgic on Park Avenue

Hi NOP,
I guess you're not OP today then. Glad you enjoyed but I can't see to devoting my encroaching senior insomnia to reading the unreal number of comments above. What I read of it, it seems to be 95% drivel, Rob.
Hi Bxgirl!
David, you're too old to write things like "STFU". Arrested development?
Biff, no earful, sorry.
Arkady, when is the next gathering? I have a right mind to come to one of these things.
The cabdriver who brought me home tonight was very nice--that was the second taxi. The first car I got in smelled of vomit and air-freshener. I said I was sorry and hopped out. It was ooguey. Felt sorry for the guy.
Pretty amazing how much heavy drinking and throwing up there is in Manhattan from Thursday night onward. I see some very sad scenes of drunk kids stumbling around. A couple of weeks ago a young man "walking alone" lurched and zigzagged back-and-forth actually slamming into trees, cars. It was terrible.
Feh.
Nighty night, All!
