I'm resurrecting the FGVOTD today in honour of Brownstoner's favourite PBL, InsertSnappyNameHere (aka "Snappy"), who is feeling under the weather.
You may already have seen it as the "Evolution of Dance" has been made the single most-viewed clip of all time. This is guaranteed to put a smile on your face.

And the first TKOTD Trophy of the day goes to our fearless leader, Biff Champion!
Posted by: CarrollGardened at October 6, 2009 9:28 AM
Morning, Biff. 2.5 points of business:
1. I posted the link to the space pod bathtub guy thread from 2007 the other day, but I realized later you were out (Friday). I know you were interested when I first mentioned it, but you might have missed my post. Did you see it, shall I post again, or did everyone else have enough of it, already? I posted as part of an exchange with brownjokester. Amazing how little commentary it got (it seemed like a lot at the time, but a trifling now -- under 70 posts). Now, if only we could find the rollerblading asshat performance artist thread.
2. I am recommending to all my friends, liberal and conservative (yes, there are a few), Bill Bishop's book "The Big Sort." Takes a good detailed look at how we got to this scorched-earth no middle ground politics that seems to be the only politics we have today. No, he doesn't blame any left or right wing conspiracies. he talks about underlying social factors that have changed over the last 40 years in where and how we all live. As opinionated as I am, and much as I love a good policy or political discussion, it saddens me how little meaningful dialogue crosses the political divide these days. The book provides an excellent perspective on how we got here.
2.5 -- OK, enough of that. Cats. Discuss.
Posted by: slopefarm at October 6, 2009 9:31 AM
I'll have to view it later- going out for cat food now (Just wanted to get the cat stuff out of the way early as we eagerly await benson's promised new Obama rant. (which will be the same as the old Obama rant) Pinko commie liberals please gather over here by the sign. :-)
Snappy- how are you feeling? Hoping better-

CGar, hehe. I purposesly resisted posting till he got the award
Posted by: more4less at October 6, 2009 9:31 AM
slopefarm- did you do a Vulcan mind meld on me or something? :-)
Posted by: bxgrl at October 6, 2009 9:33 AM
Thanks, m4l. Much appreciated. I mean, clearly, I OWN the TKOTD Trophy, but it's nice to share it every once in a while. (Besides, Biff seems to take perverse pleasure in awarding it to me!)
Posted by: CarrollGardened at October 6, 2009 9:33 AM
Good morning folks;
Hey Pete and all: I saw your comments yesterday. Well, if you think I'm alone in my thinking, allow me to present the following:
-liberal Washington Post columnist Richard Cohen: "Obama doesn't seem ready to lead""
http://www.realclearpolitics.com/articles/2009/10/06/obama_doesnt_seem_ready_to_lead.html
-liberal NYT columnist Bob Herbert: "Does Obama Get it?"
http://www.nytimes.com/2009/10/06/opinion/06herbert.html?_r=1&ref=opinion
-George Will: "The Obamas' Narcissism on Display".
http://www.realclearpolitics.com/articles/2009/10/06/olympic_gold_for_narcissism_98591.html
And of course, last Saturday's SNL skit, citing his accomplishments as "jack" and "squat".
And this just in: I'm watching a breaking news story in which some of the doctors who appeared with President Obama yesterday (Supposedly in support of his healthcare plan) are protesting. They were never told the reason for the invitation, were given white lab coats when they arrived and told "stand next to the President for the press conference". It turns out that some of them are adamantly against his proposal. Said one:"We were used as props".
Coming soon to a theater near you: "Jimmy Carter II". Look for attacks by killer rabbits.
Discuss.

"And the first TKOTD Trophy of the day goes to our fearless leader, Biff Champion!"
Serves me right for posting a video that is 6 minutes long!
Yippee, my first TKOTD. I would like to thank all of my "friends" who purposely didn't post, without whom none of this would have been possible.
Posted by: Biff Champion at October 6, 2009 9:34 AM
And benson, too. Amazing.
Posted by: slopefarm at October 6, 2009 9:35 AM
because biff also selfishly claims the 500th post of the day award for himself (even when he is only 400th). C Gar- we will have to come up with a new award for you and I can create a special tiara to celebrate it
Posted by: bxgrl at October 6, 2009 9:35 AM
slopefarm- am I psychic or what?
Posted by: bxgrl at October 6, 2009 9:37 AM
Slopefarm, thanks for that. I think I saw that story as I was doing my search but, by all means, post it again.
Posted by: Biff Champion at October 6, 2009 9:38 AM
Benson's contribution to partisan warfare is to get bx so riled up her cats starve.
OK, need to work.

Partisan?
Why I'm just quoting leading liberal columnists! Hehehehehe
Posted by: benson at October 6, 2009 9:42 AM
You are definitely not what, bx, so you must be psychic.
Now really off to work.
Oh, and here's the space pod thread again, Biff. http://www.brownstoner.com/brownstoner/archives/2007/12/bathroom_reno_9.php

I want you to know that the person in the bathroom pod post is a friend of mine. Soon after he posted that picture, they found out that the thing leaked like a sieve, and they had to tear it out. He now has a marble tiled bathroom with a new clawfoot tub.

Unless provoked beyond reason, I will not be participating in any political threads. No one is going to change my mind, and I'm not going to change anyone else's.
Also getting cat food. Later.

Chicken and Montrose;
I'm not trying to change anyone's mind. Please look at what I wrote above. Folks yesterday were saying that I was just some sort of lone wolf nutjob in my thoughts on the matter. Well, turns out not to be the case, which is why quoted liberal columnists.
Have a good day all!

MM - We continue in "hope springs eternal" mode that Benson will eventually see the light.
Off for kitty comestibles...

Benson...you're getting AttDefDisorder...you're supposed to be on Iran topic. And I was serious when asked on how you think our past pres policies/actions would be different than OBama's (or Obama's opponent in last election).
And what supposedly would you do differently.
Not trying to scrap about Iran but just asking, realistically, if the other party were in power, would policy significantly different?
(and if want to go into that Health care reform...you forgot to mention that one of your guys Bill Frist favors it).
Posted by: Petebklyn at October 6, 2009 9:54 AM
On the Iran thing, you're going to see all the Sunni nations (Saudi Arabi, Egypt the Emirates) join in with Israel against Iran because Iran has nukes and they do not. Strange bedfellows it will be.

Rob,
Orzo salad: You can make it the night before, save a little of the dressing to toss in the day off to freshen it up a bit. Don't overcook the Orzo. Be generous with the pine nuts.

LOL chiller, that sounds good, but we like to stick to the themes. a while back we had a Country Cookin' themed potluck and we all chose redneck recipes from a cookbook written by Loretta Lynn. i think we all gained 20 pounds that day hahaha

Posted by: brownjokester at October 6, 2009 10:29 AM
Pete;
I think McCain made his differences clear with President Obama on the subject of Iran during the debates.
Despite my differences with President Obama on domestic policies, I wish him goodluck on foreign policy. What disturbs me about his policy, however, is that he seems to believe that his considerable rhetorical skills and charm can always carry the day. When you are dealing with nuts who openly deny the Holocaust, who openly state that they want Israel wiped off the map, and who openly develop a nuclear capability so that they can enhance their terrorism-exporting capabilities (so that they can dominate the Mideast), we are dealing with people who have NO RESPECT for such skill sets. What they respect is the RAW display of POWER, in other words, FORCE and BALLS. In that department, I am sorry to say, President Obama is coming up way too short.
Folks who support President Obama can put their head in the sand, if they wish, and just file away the criticism as sniping from partisan hacks. That way lies the road to Jimmy Carterism. On the other hand, he can do what Bill Clinton did after his Presidency got off to a rough start: take a breather, take stock, rethink things through, prioritize, realize that getting things done takes more than a clever speech (it requires WORK) and ENGAGE with Congress (including your opponents). Recall that it was Bill Clinton working with a congress led by Newt Gingrich that got alot of good things done.
Finally, a small note: Bill Frist appeared on TV last night and said that he had been mis-quoted.

Heat oil in a large saucepan or Dutch oven on medium heat. Add onion, garlic, ginger and red pepper flakes. Cook on low for 3-5 minutes, until tender and fragrant.

Posted by: more4less at October 6, 2009 10:34 AM
Rob, That sounds easy as can be. Will you have a place to heat it at the office?
A dutch oven is just a big heavy pot with a lid. Sometime enameled.

"DUTCH OVEN!?! whaaaat? i did not know that was a REAL thing"
Rob, not only is it real, there's even a TV show dedicated to it. "DUTCH OVEN COOKIN' WITH CEE DUB"
The only reason I know this is because it's often featured on The Soup.

M4L, I'm thinking that we should retire the TKOTD award. It's resulting in mean people sitting on the sidelines and not commenting in the hopes of experiencing some twisted schadenfreude at the expense of others. Ok, perhaps I'm guilty of doing this more than anyone, but I'm officially retiring the award so as not to impinge Mr. B's maximum hit count. And what better time to do it after BJ just took another home?

FORCE and BALLS - are you saying invade?, bomb? use nukes?
what? and from what I recall during debates is that McCain was posturing saying not going to talk directly and claiming Obama would or something to that effect. And to me that was all nuance and posturing to appeal to voters - and not really how dept of state, diplomats really work.

In between, there are a few small much lesser know names who has rental ads posted in front of their store. after the block after fillmore, you wont see anything so cut over to Dekalb then head up toward Clinton. you should see a bunch of smaller firms starting around washington park / cumberland st

I know you're all waiting with bated breath for benson and I to engage. However, after reading Montrose's post and others, and burdened with a long memory, I've decided it ain't worth it. benson will always hate libs, dems, obama, - anything that doesn't reek of Bush and buddies. It's hardwired and if others want to take it up, I am happy to applaud from the sidelines. When someone has an irrational, systemic bias to the point where they are willing to cut off their noses to spite their faces, it makes no sense to argue with them and it is very little fun. If it were a real debate, rather than a name-calling ripping apart of other viewpoints, it would be one thing. I will point out that Obama made a big point of wanting to govern in a bipartisan manner and the reality is the GOP does not. It is so obvious that even moderate Republicans are getting nervous.
And as far as Iran and the nutjob who is in power- he is a nutjob in control of a country with weapons and well along the road to nuclear capability. Nutjobs do not respond well to sticks. They go- well-thermonuclear. Personally I don't care if all of Iran believes in the Holocaust or not- I care about how they are going to behave to the US and the rest of the world. Beating them with a stick did nothing. Now we need to try something else- and that is reality. And all the politics I will do today.
benson, we can talk about cats :-)

DH, here's the link to "Manhattan Skyline - NYC's Finest No-Fee Rentals", but it looks like the rentals are ONLY in Manhattan, in which case their slogan should really be "Manhattan's Finest No-Fee Rentals", no? I realize there's a Manhattan contingent here (Etson), but it does seem an odd choice to advertise on Brownstoner. But I digress:

hey folks,
I have to agree with Benson and his posts. This president is using alot of smoke and mirrors in an ill-advised attempt to push through this plan to "overhall" medicine. It is nothing but a thinly veiled attempt to capture more government control of the populace in that people will become even more dependent on government shills for their health and well being.
The doctors at the white house photo-op were duped. They were there for a chance to schmooze and what they got was a photo-op switcharoo.
What doctor in his right mind, unless he/she is directly funded by the government, would agree to sign on to a program that aims to cut their pay by 20% and increase their patient load by 15%, all the while allowing the legal industry (which the DNC chairman all but admits is their primary partner) to get away scott free. In other words;
YOU CANNOT HAVE MEANINGFUL HEALTHCARE REFORM WITHOUT TORT LAW REFORM!
NOR CAN YOU HAVE MEANINGFUL HEALTHCARE REFORM WITHOUT OPENING THE HEALTHCARE INSURERS TO INTERSTATE COMPETITION!
NOR CAN YOU HAVE MEANINGFUL HEALTHCARE REFORM WITHOUT AN HONEST ASSESSMENT OF WHO ACTUALLY NEEDS HEALTHCARE COVERAGE ASSISTANCE (THIS INCLUDES A DISCUSSION ABOUT COVERING INDIVIDUALS WHO ARE NOT CITIZENS OF THIS SOVEREIGN NATION).
what you will have is a medical field which is disgruntled, underpaid and litigated into leaving the field. why would one continue to be a doctor if all one works for is at the hands of an ambulance chaser looking to score. good luck.
notice how the president has been skirting the issue, saying things like there will be a panel formed to study the issue. lol, that's like the UN saying their security panel which includes Libya will study the issue of terrorist support in that country. what a joke.
Let the games begin.lol.

montrose morris,
Medicare is not socialized medicine. it is a government trust which is paid for by the individual over a life time. And it is going bankrupt. Not my words, that's the Congressional Budget Office's assessment.
medicare will be insolvent around 2017, that's 8 years away folks. so get your government run medical care while you can.
It is a good idea, at heart, but like many things administered by the government, it is rife with waste and abuse.
and now the president wants to expand "medicare" type coverage to the other 200 million Americans not in that type of coverage.
Wonder where they'll get the money to pull that giant rabbit out of Uncle Sam's hat?

My last comment on health care.
I don't have any. I can't afford any. I need it. I can't get it.
I am not lazy, my priorities are not screwed up, I don't spend my alleged health care monies on cars, clothes, vacations or appliances.
I do not run to the doctor if I sneeze, and have been to the emergency room 4 times in the last 10 years for reasons that could have been taken care of by a personal physician, if I had one. Those visits cost more than several visits to any private doctor. If I hadn't been in great pain, or fear of something more serious, I wouldn't have even gone.
I've toughed out conditions that I should have gone to a doctor for, and probably will again. Stupid? Probably.
I am the face of millions of people in this country, most of us educated, working, and possibly on the road to an early demise, or longer treatment and recovery than is necessary because we can't afford medical insurance, and thereby preventative medical treatment. I am sick of the fear of "socialist medicine", sick of the greed of insurance companies, and the power of the insurance and pharmecutical lobbies. Most of all, I am sick of politicians and pundits who are either too well paid off, or too complacent with the status quo to get off their well insured butts to do anything for me, and those like me. Any government plan that will enable me to get basic care, especially until I can afford to get better care, is a plan for me. Let's get it in place, the sooner the better.

montrose morris,
there are free market solutions to your predicament without resorting to overturning 17% of our economy which is already facing over a trillion dollar budget deficit.
here are some solutions for your predicament;
-enroll in a hospital based (HCC) healthcare plan for uninsured, they charge something like 15 dollars a month and require paperwork, but it is doable. In fact it is exactly what persons "without documentation" do in one of the hospitals in which I work.
-prescriptions are available at 4$ (four dollars) per prescription through Target Pharmacy and Wallmart pharmacy.
-look into local community clinic plans, some are private, there is one advertised in the Rockaway's queens which has you pay $365 a year with a 10 dollar per visit fee. For full access to Family practitioner, Gyn or other primary care offered at the center. No joke.
-consider a major medical plan for the unlikely event of a major illness or injury.
there is more.
No one is against increasing access to medical care for all, least of all myself.
what we are against is turning over a workable system serving most of the population in order to cover those who can be covered through much more economical means.
look at my suggestions posted earlier for a start;
increase interstate competition and see how fast the premiums will fall.

"Medicare is not socialized medicine. it is a government trust which is paid for by the individual over a life time."
Legion, would you care to define "socialized medicine" just so we know what's being talked about? As you know most countries accused of having socialized medicine have mandatory deductions from wages or welfare benefits which are used to fund the health services. Its not described as a tax of course. So what do you mean when you say "socialized medicine"?

No, THL, of course it's not free. The ,losers for that type of service though largely is the hospital. Stocks like THC have been doing quite well because, as hospitals, they will likely get reimbursed for care provided to all those who have historically not had any insurance.
That's the capitalistic, stock market interpretaion of all of this. Other winners wou;ld be generic drug manufacturers and WMT & CVS. Losers of course are HMOs and insurance companies.

Not for nothing but those guys have been winning at the cost to real people. Some of those "gatekeepers" need to realize they are dealing in people's lives, not numbers.
Posted by: bxgrl at October 6, 2009 1:01 PM
bxgrl,
I beg to differ, we are a compassionate people, Americans. we give more, of our own volition, than any other nation on earth.
what we are facing is a problem of coverage and it benefits all americans to have all americans covered.
the argument is on how to do it.
I do not believe, by any stretch of the imagination, that the government will be the solution to this problem. Look at their track record in wasting our tax dollars both Republican and Democrat.
the best run systems for healthcare are private enterprises. The best doctors I ever had were private, not at government run clinics, remember my previous posts about my experiences at the government run dentist's offices in Jackson Heights? Not good. The memories are still vivid.
The private solutions are there, we as citizens only need to mandate the proper solutions.
-open up health insurance competition
-clean up malpractice insurance industry overcharging
-stop the legal industry in it's abuse of the civil suit system at the expense of healthcare access
-work on limiting severe fraud and waste in the current government run systems
Posted by: Legion at October 6, 2009 1:01 PM
There's also a free non-emergency clinic at NYU hospital on 1st Ave. Did some research on this in case I end up uninsured.
I agree with Legion that tort reform is essential, but with MM that the current situation is undesirable. The proposals I have heard so far seem to make things worse by increasing the cost to the taxpayer while not seeming all that much cheaper for the consumer than the current system.
Perhaps mandating minimum coverage and requiring insurance companies to cover uninsured people via a pool system at a regulated price (like car insurance, exc for the set price) may work better.
The amount of effort and money spent (in general) on unnecessary lifestyle drugs also must be a source of inflation. Lost count of the number of adverts I've seen for drugs for 'restless legs syndrome', 'social anxiety disorder' etc. There has to be a way to incentivize the drug companies to focus on more basic and general needs rather than these frivolous invented problems (possibly via varying patent lengths, or varying R&D tax writeoffs).
I'm confused by healthcare and don't think there is anywhere in the world that has got it right.
Posted by: etson at October 6, 2009 1:02 PM
BTW- thanks for that information, Legion. I have been checking out what you posted a long time ago, and will look into this too.
Posted by: bxgrl at October 6, 2009 1:02 PM
Legion, I will look into those items, thanks. Hopefully there is something in there that will do for now. I still vehemently disagree with most of your points, however. I do think there needs to be tort reform, but that is not by itself, the reason why health insurance in this country is unavailable to many.
Dave, freelancer's union insurance is not cheap. Their best plan is around $450 a month, their lowest plan around $250, both with a high deductable for just about everything, and the even lower priced plans have a deductables so high, why bother? I can't afford $450 a month.
Posted by: Montrose Morris at October 6, 2009 1:04 PM
dittoburg,
socialism; a system of social organization that advocates the vesting of OWNERSHIP and CONTROL of production, distribution and management of capital, land,(healthcare), etc. , in the community as a whole.
as it applies to President Obama's plan, it is the takeover of our private healthcare industry by default with the implementation of a "government option" which will have the effect of a virus in undermining the competing and sinking the better run private healthcare plans. Remember what I said about the predicted insolvency of the Medicare system by the congressional budget office. Don't even get me started on Medicaid which is already on bailout money in new york state.
Posted by: Legion at October 6, 2009 1:07 PM
I figured it wasn't all that cheap.
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at October 6, 2009 1:07 PM
Re healthcare, I and many people I know are tied to a staff job so they can have healthcare.
Those doctor visit plans Legion mentioned sound good, but a plan that will cover you if you get cancer, diabetes, etc., runs at least $300 and up per person on the East Coast. And then they can drop you anyway.
Even staff health care doesn't cover everything. My dad had to pay $30,000 out of pocket one year because of his wife's diabetes medications and what not. That's enough to bankrupt the average person.
Posted by: mopar at October 6, 2009 1:08 PM
mopar,
doctor's have to work with patients on solving problems for patient's on an individual basis.
diabetes meds can be expensive, they can also be inexpensive. depends on what prescriptions the doctors are giving patients.
take antibiotics for example; a look at the Target 4$ list shows many of the basic prescription antibiotics that might be needed
including
-penicillins
-cephalosporins
and even meds like Cipro, which is the one if you will recall, used against anthrax.
same goes for diabetes meds, asking the doctor if he/she is doing their best to limit cost is not asking too much. especially if you are paying.
Posted by: Legion at October 6, 2009 1:17 PM
Legion, in general I don't find much to argue with you on that- but my experience has been that private enterprises care first and foremost for themselves and they will do so at the expense of those they claim to serve. How do you hold their feet to the fire to make them improve and be affordable? And there is talk of adding tort reform (I agree- badly needed). I still think you can't look away from all the studies that show countries offering health care are doing it well and better than the US. I mean, the idea of comparing a country that makes sure all of its citizens have access to health care, as compared to a country that has millions who can't afford it, or will bankrupt even those that do- what reasonable comparison could there be? Not only do Americans pay for health care, but they then have to fight for treatment. I know people whose insurance would not cover the most basic medications they needed. Managed health care has become a joke- you can save a dollar or save a life but not both?
Posted by: bxgrl at October 6, 2009 1:19 PM
what we have to keep in mind in the discussion of healthcare is not to let fear take over,
we are talking insurance here,
the truth is that most people are healthy between the ages of 10-50.
keeping that in mind, we should be thinking about structuring a system which emphasized maintaining good health with a "safety net" such as major medical which may or may not be paid into by the individual or the society at large for those who cannot afford it.
keeping in place the structures already in place for the seniors, the retired, the children and the indigent.
Posted by: Legion at October 6, 2009 1:21 PM
Thanks for the primer on Socialism. I asked what you considered socialized medicine as you seemed to distinguish medicare as not being socialized medicine on the basis that people were mandatorily paying for it rather than that the government was involved. Now you seem to be taking a different tack. Regardless, why does a government run healthcare OPTION virally lead to the downfall and takeover of the whole shebang? My diagnosis: hyperbole.

In the spirit of 'The What'...
Dropping Rents Will Drag House Prices Down with Them
Posted Oct 06, 2009 12:14pm EDT by Henry Blodget [yahoo finance]
http://tinyurl.com/ycfk6z8
The vacancy rate for rental apartments in the U.S. is now 7.8% and climbing, says the Wall Street Journal. This is the highest vacancy rate in 23 years.
Worse, the vacancy rate is expected to keep climbing through the winter, ultimately hitting the highest rate on record.
This is good news for renters and bad news for landlords. It's also bad news for anyone who owns and would like to sell a house.
Why are rising rental vacancies bad news for homeowners?
Because rising vacancies put pressure on rents, as landlords have to cut prices to woo a smaller pool of tenants. As rents drop, meanwhile, one of the key measures of house-price value--the price-to-rent ratio--also changes, and not for the good.
All else being equal, when rents drop, the "Housing P/E ratio" -- price to rent -- increases as rents decrease. This is the same thing that would happen to the P/E ratio of a stock if the company's earnings began to shrink.
The more the rent/earnings shrink, the more expensive the house or company is as a multiple of the rent/earnings.
Will people suddenly refuse to pay as much for houses because the price-to-rent ratio rises a bit? No. But they may decide to rent instead of buy, which will remove some demand from the housing market. And, this, in turn, will put pressure on house prices.
The chart below from Calculated Risk illustrates the price-to-rent ratio over the past 15 years. As you can see, it got way out of whack during the peak bubble years and has now fallen back within the realm of normal. As rents fall, however, the ratio will start rising again.
That is, unless house prices fall, too, which is the more likely scenario.
***Bid half off peak comps***

again, we are talking about insuring those who need insurance. let's identify those who need insurance, set guidelines for contributions by the individual or society and cover those using the current system which most people feel provides the best care in the world. There is a huge difference between getting healthcare and getting good healthcare.
The president could just sign an executive order and mandate all the hospitals receiving federal aid to enroll the uninsured. this would cover everyone but promptly lead to hospital closures and angry mobs of poorly treated patients and zombie like doctors overworked and ready to quit. we have to be smarter and target the solution to the problem. Everyone may be covered in Canada, but I know for a fact that many also have a private insurance plan which they pay for themselves.

Legion, when my dad was dying of cancer my family was frantically trying to move money around so that he and my mother would not lose all their money in order to get him care.
I know Americans are first in charitable giving, but I think as a country we have truly lost the sense of compassion for our fellows and everything i see in the political arena just reinforces that feeling for me.

BHO, you seeing rents drop alot in the prime hoods recently? regardless of where they dropped from, the current prices still look pretty expensive compared to what I pay on maintenance at my place. do see prices dropping in non-prime hoods - ie could've rented out my crown heights place for ~$2k-2.2k a yr ago but my dilly dally ass didn't do anything with it and now staring at rent dropped to ~1500-1700

dittoburg,
allow me to explain. the government option acts like a virus in undermining the private sector for a few simple reasons.
-first the government has the unlimited resources of the government and it's apparent lack of accountability as demonstrated by the impending insolvency of Medicare and the bail out of Medicaid in NY state and California to name two examples.
-lack of accountability for efficiency leads to the ability of the government plan to decrease costs at the expense of taxpayers. decreasing cost leads to unreasonable competition with private plans who may be well run and efficient but cannot decrease cost below a bottom line which apparently the governemnt has no qualms about doing.
- dont believe me? ask any doctor who sets their fee structure. they will answer Medicare. They set fees yearly for everything from blood drawing to open reduction of a femoral fracture to delivering a baby (and the current rate given for doctors to deliver a baby is about $900) ask your neighborhood ob/gyn how many deliveries he has to make to cover 120,000 in malpractice insurance.
medicare sets the fees because the insurance companies link their reimbursement schedules to medicare set rates, sometimes at a percentage of the going medicare rate (like 80%). This is a newer development over the past 20 years.
you may ask why doctor's have to accept these rates? the large majority do because they cannot make a living without accepting medicare. (remember most doctors graduate in their 30's with crushing debt and new expenses like malpractice, rent, food, family, practice fees, etc.)
so, understanding how Medicare sets fees, it is not a large leap to understand how the governement will set the premiums for private healthcare insurances until they go out of business.

As some of you may be aware, I usually stay away from controversial discussions on here but I have to agree with Legion on all of his points. Firstly, I can compare 2 different healthcare systems, one from a former communist life, as many of you know. Did you people know that in Russia, until about 1992ish, you had all your dental work done without any form of anesthesia. Good luck getting that root canal. If you needed complex surgery or were diagnosed with cancer and had money, you would fly to guess where, that's right, U S A (or maybe Israel) to get it cured because in Russia, that diagnosis meant that you were as good as dead. That's national healthcare for you. You WILL lose some of the brightest minds because no one will want to go to Med school, fellowship, surgical residency and spend 15 years to make 100K a year, if that.
I do have friends that are doctors (or in the midst of their residency) and they will tell you that first hand, just like Legion would. Some, even today, decided to go into Nursing and just get NPs because it doesn't pay to go through so much schooling and come out with loans and have malpractice insurance slapped on you as well.
Now statistically speaking, going private is still the best way. I did a great deal of my edumucational studies (papers, thesis) etc. on quantifying gov't agencies, healthcare, and big pharma. It was a while ago and I can't quote real numbers, but let me tell ya, gov't taking over is not the way to go. Gov't sponsored hospitals are the biggest money pits ever. I really wish I wasn't too busy to show some examples.
Also, there are plenty of options. Personal anecdote, my mom's friend came to work here as a nanny (illegally) and broke her leg. She signed up to one of those city hospital plans, was able to get a cast, follow up check ups and such for all around 60 bucks. This was legal and did require some paperwork but we got it done. Gov't will probably foot the bill for the rest but that's at our expense as taxpayers.
I know that it's not easy for some self employed people and that's exactly why I also chose to work for a corp. instead of working for myself. My reasoning took healthcare into the fact just like vacation benefits, salary, etc.

Legion-, you mean "covered" Americans. :-)
I think you haven't spoken to everyone because there are a lot of horror stories out there about people who do have insurance and have been denied what they need. I am not tlaking about unnecessary procedures or exotic medications. I mean the care they expected to get when they pay for coverage. There is a difference between health care and good health care- but frankly, if its not good, it may as well be non-existent.

bxgrl,
I am sorry to hear of your experience. This leads to a different discussion which we will all be forced to discuss at some time in our lives, that is, the allocation of resources. In some countries, the resources are rationed and individuals of a certain age are may not be eligible for extensive measures to extend life.
Keep in mind, I myself am for extending any and all measures for my loved ones and I wouldn't expect less of others. The truth is however, that in other nations, these choices have already been set by a govenment health panel. In the USA we currently have the option to choose every and all life saving measures such as radiation, radical surgery and chemotherapy. In other nations, those options are simply non existent or rationed.
Americans will have to come to terms with what we are willing to pay for in extending life, which reports show is being extended by health and diet in many nations without necessarily involving costly medical treatments. we will have to discuss what works in extending life and how long and how to pay for it. right now, the system is basically; those who can pay will receive extensive measures.Ironically, those that cannot pay and are on plans such as Medicaid also get extensive measures for life extension. Those caught in the middle are the ones who face bankruptcy or dissolving of their wealth by hospital/doctor fees.
There is no simple solution to this.

Good to hear from you snappy! Go back to bed and rest!
Kens- the issue isn't those who can afford insurance, its those who can't. And I wish I could find another job that offered it again, as my last job did. I got the cobra papers so it could be continued and I couldn't afford it at all. I'm not at all sure who really does win the money pit race- too many private hospitals treat you like crap if you have no insurance or less expensive plans. Been there, done that. When women are sent home 2 days after breast cancer surgery- and we are talking insured women- something is wrong. having had major surgery twice and so extensive they kept me in the hospital nearly two weeks, and having seen friends who had mastectomies sent home in pain and barely able to take care of themselves, I can truthfully say insurance companies suck a big one. I know what it is to recover from serious surgery- its hell. I was lucky- if it can be called luck- that my doctor fought the hospital to keep me there until I could take care of myself at home. My friend wnet home without a clue to what she was in for and only the American Cancer Society gave her real help- not the insurance company who wanted to take the easy way out.
Posted by: bxgrl at October 6, 2009 2:00 PM
Legion- it ocurred to me- late, of course- that you must face some seriously heartbreaking decisions as a doctor. I get angry at the situation and sometimes at some of your arguments but I have to also think this is a truly difficult issue for you on an everyday level.
Posted by: bxgrl at October 6, 2009 2:02 PM
Legion, I know we are just going round robin on this and will never agree, but I find it hard to believe that most Americans are satisfied with their heath coverage. If small businesses are the lifeblood of our economy, we all have multiple myloma. Small businesses are classified as those with less than what - 200 employees? Most of the small businesses I know, and have worked for, have less than 30. When I did have insurance, we paid quite a bit for it out of pocket, as my employers could not afford to do any better, and would have stopped covering us at all, if they didn't feel the moral imperative to offer insurance. What about all of the other occupations and single person businesses? Truck drivers, farmers, artists, craftsmen, even single practice small town lawyers, accountants and vetinarians? The guy who owns the grocery store, or the plumber? Not to mention the millions of other workers who just don't have insurance? I don't think the majority is happy. If it was, this wouldn't be an issue.
If I had to make a conspiracy out of it, the enemy is not the hospitals, or the doctors, or the people who check in under assumed names, or even the greedy lawyers who've made the practice of certain kinds of medicine almost prohibitive. I put the blame firmly on insurance companies, who have been feeding off of us for a century, pharmacutical giants who make gazillions, lobbyists and advertising companies, and the politicians and talking heads who defend, and are paid off, by these people. I wish Obama could clean house, but they are too strong, and too powerful. I don't think we will get anything that will really change the system, no matter how much he and the rest of us would like to. I hope he keeps trying though.

strangely im thumbing thru an 8th grade US history textbook and they say that when medicare and medicaid first started qualifying (whatever that meant at the time) were allowed two months of hospital care allowances and other medical care costs. then it talks about about the Great Society program making americans more dependent on government programs and entitlements..
personally i think the government needs to stay out of private affairs, but on the other hand i do believe in helping people who need it. the whole issue gives me a brain ache tho.

can I add that health care expenses are leading reason for personal bankruptcies in this country.
And if most people are happy with their insurace...it is people like me who work for gov't pay little or nothing for great policies, those covered by gov't health insurance (which I think is about 25% of population ) i.e.medicare, medicaid, and those who probably haven't had to use it much.

"Yeah, so there is a Brooklyn, Ohio. I think it's only fair that about 100,000 guido's move from Brooklyn, NY to Brooklyn, Ohio and start opening up pizza stores, soccer cafe's, social clubs, pork stores etc. They can walk around in Sergio Tachinni's, slicked back hair, drive down Main Street blasting techno. Does that sound ridiculous? I'm sure hipsters would say that there is nothing wrong with that. But I think it's a good comparison as to what has happened here. It's just as ridiculous. Oh and to the other annoying filthy transplants from Minnesota, and other mid-west states this applies to you too." -http://greenpointers.blogspot.com/2007/09/hipster-hatred-ha-has.html

We ended up going with the Dyson DC25. It's much lighter than our old monster - the one that mysteriously and coincidentally broke the one time I used it - and moves around really well. It's bagless, which Mrs. C was initially worried about as people seem to complain about dust flying everywhere when emptying the dirt, but this one empties from the bottom (no re-writes please) and should therefore hopefully not make a big mess.

As a Medicare beneficiary, I have to say I'm happy w/ my coverage for the first time ever. Got cancer in my mid-20s while living in London - moved back here to be w/ family & it cost me literally hundreds of thousands over the years - even w/ doctors waiving their fees. Took me over 20 years to pay everything off. Then I was uninsurable but finally got some coverage in my 40s. Last year I was paying $1100. per month for a n.v.g. HMO. This year, w/ Medicare, I pay a tenth that & get eyeglasses, various annual check-ups w/ no need for clumsy referrals & feel quite secure w/ what is available.
I do believe tort reform should be a part of any new plan - litigation & malpractice insurance are real drains on the system in many ways.
I firmly believe that if the far right hadn't done so much scare-mongering, the country is really pretty much in agreement about what should come about. But witness those poor misguided souls who affirm Medicare while screaming about keeping gov't uninvolved - that kind of shrill, uneducated ranting is the true cause of the inability to come up w/ an agreement.

CGar,
I have doubts that tort reform will produce all the savings its proponents claim, but I do agree it should be part of the mix on a health plan and will help to a small degree. I would go further and say that, in addition to med-mal award caps, offer an administrative claims matrix alternative to litigation. Forego litigation, get a smaller payment, but receive some real compensation for medical expenses and ongoing out of pocket costs, and perhaps a small extra amount akin to "pain and suffering", but far less than you might get in litigation.

"I'm not stocking 7 different kinds of milk for you lactose, vegan and organic pains in the asses."
I was once in an Au Bon Pain in midtown and an Italian lady (not American-Italian) was asking the morning beverage-wallah if they had any chamomile, thickly accented.
The guy looked around at his selection and told her "We got whole milk, 1%, half n half and soy milk but we ain't got no camel milk"

legion- I know! And I'm enjoying it :-)
We really need a recipe thread on here- you guys post the most mouthwatering sounding things. Maybe we need a b'stoner cookbook?
May I say there is at lest one crazy on the Brooklyn Friends thread (besides myself, of course) who seems to think they have it so tough over there.

I think the * * by Rob's name are supposed to be "happy fingers" like in the movie "Bring it On." That dance instructor was awesome.

Posted by: brownjokester at October 6, 2009 4:17 PM
camel milk- that was funny. Stuff like that is the story of my life - when you're hard of hearing, things like Parade of Shoes becomes Parade of Jews.

pete- I really don't enjoy those things- loafer went after me because I said I didn't think a school over the subway was a great idea. Then he started in on basically implying I was lying about living in the area for years. Well, I did, on Schermerhorn. So the nastier he got the more stubborn I got. I love a good argument when people are throwing around ideas. I love good disagreements- one reason I have come to enjoy legion. But to insult my opinion just because you don't agree with it- I take umbrage :-) (besides- us liberal pinko commie types have to stick together)
Posted by: bxgrl at October 6, 2009 4:37 PM
naps are awesome :)
Ditto, I love the camel milk story! funny slip-up story...
Years ago my mom and dad were grocery shopping for a cook-out they were hosting. My father *HATES* honey bbq sauce. While in the store, he keeps telling my mother that he hates honey bbq sauce, as if she could forget. While picking up sauces, my mom picked up a bottle of honey bbq sauce to move it out of the way to grab one my dad does like. Not realizing that she wasn't going to actually put the honey bbq sauce in the cart, my father shouts "I TOLD YOU I DON'T LIKE H*NK*Y BBQ SAUCE" just as a white woman walks by. My mother, horrified, turns and leaves him standing alone in the aisle. (the edited word is the slur George Jefferson used against white people)

"Biff, just trying to disprove your theory that the OT can't be hijacked!"
But Thread Hijacker, I stand by the theory. You didn't hijack anything. By it's very nature, you can theoretically post whatever you want on the Open Thread (including the word "me" 100 times in a row if you choose) as long as it's not too offensive (which is close to impossible) or libelous.
Posted by: Biff Champion at October 6, 2009 4:57 PM

I'm still very weak and gaspy with the whole breathing thing, but surviving nonetheless. On tap for tonight is a nice hot bath and a new James Patterson audiobook. Hmm, well, over the past few days I've made corn chowder, banana bread, an apple tart with puff pastry, a roast chicken with thyme/lemon, and i'm making an onion tart tomorrow, and cavetelli with sage, brown butter and italian hot sausage.
[I'm down about the job hunt, cooking is a quick fix, makes me feel useful and productive.]

bxgrl, I'm always paying attention, and the 15th, as we've discussed, at length, ad nauseum, is non-negotiable. Do the words "command performance" mean anything to you?
jokester, if we've met I hope to see you on the 15th; if we haven't met, I hope to see you on the 15th.
And, Cobble, what more can I possibly say, but that, no matter how many times I may celebrate my birthday, you know I'm utterly incapable of celebrating my birthday without you, Chad, Chet and BH.
