New Do-Gooder Org in Former Nonprofit Space

family%20home%20care%20092009.JPG
The office space on 7th Street between 2nd and 3rd avenues that used to house the Center for an Urban Environment is now being leased by Family Home Care Services, an affiliate of Catholic Charities that provides in-home care to the elderly, ill and disabled. What's more interesting about the space, however, is how it was abruptly vacated by the Center for an Urban Environment last April: With almost no notice, the nonprofit's board of directors decided to shut down the 30-year-old organization because of financial woes. The nonprofit hadn't been headquartered at the 7th Street location for very long. GMAP

Although I don't know the details, there was definitely more to the story than that. Center for the Urban Environment had not been able to use the space for months, and there was some significant legal issue going on. This was definitely not an abrupt move.

For some reason this is the only street being developed in gowanus, it seems. Every time I hear about office space being taken in Gowanus, it's always on this block.

Wasn't this the building that had BCUE bragging about how "green" and "LEED-certified" it was? If so, it seems a shame not to use all that "green-"ness for an environmentally-related group if the building is to house a non-profit. Wonder if we'll ever hear the full story behind the fall of BCUE, or if anyone else will rise to the challenge of filling some or all of their mission? They left quite a vacuum in terms of education about the urban environment; and Bob Guskind's death (and the subsequent loss of Gowanus Lounge) left a vacuum in terms of coverage and activism. Any banner-picker-uppers out there?
