Longtime Thai Restaurant in the Slope Shutters

t%20thai%20092009.jpg
T Thai, the second-floor restaurant on the corner of 7th Avenue and Carroll Street, closed down last week, and signs have gone up announcing that the space is for rent. In its window display, the Thai joint boasted of being in business since 1980. GMAP

went there once i believe, and i lived only a block away. a) it made no positive impression, and the dining room felt ugh b) being on a 2nd floor means it was never within normal eyeline and thus never a reminder that one should revisit.

unless youve got some amazing food or unique angle, you should be visible to passerbys.

The place was not good at all.

Mango Thai is 3 blocks up on Lincoln Place and 7th, and is fantastic.

Posted by: 11217 at October 1, 2009 10:40 AM

oops, one more thing...PS is fine with 1 less thai place. PLEASE someone bring some good:
- fried chicken joint
- southern / soul food that isnt overpriced
- good divey bar on that 2nd floor for a decent view

Posted by: BSD at October 1, 2009 10:41 AM

A good run but did they close because of business or personal reasons. If it's the former, one would wonder why they didn't get a store front when the rents were lower. Having a restaurant on a second floor is practically a death sentence.

Posted by: Crownlfc at October 1, 2009 10:41 AM

The food wasn't that good, the atmosphere was eh, but the view of the street for the Halloween parade was great.

Posted by: tiptoe at October 1, 2009 10:42 AM

Yes, a pretty impressive run indeed for a 2nd floor space. I agree with everyone that it was mediocre at best. Next on the chopping block has got to be that 2nd floor mexican place on 7th Avenue in Park Slope. Subpar.

Posted by: Shoots and Leaves at October 1, 2009 10:50 AM

went there once a few years ago. I had the frog legs which were tasty. I dont really go eat on 7th ave very often anymore tho.

Posted by: Santa at October 1, 2009 10:51 AM

bsd a fried chicken joint on 7th and carroll? that is easily the best idea team bear has had all year. imagine...

Posted by: joe_the_bummer at October 1, 2009 10:56 AM

Agree with Santa, 5th Avenue is the place for a good restuarant in Park Slope last couple of years.

Posted by: broker at October 1, 2009 10:58 AM

The competition was too tough for this place; Rice, further south on 7th Avenue is a much better Thai restaurant IMO.

Does anyone, besides me, remember when this space had Le Parc Gourmet, one of the first upscale restaurants on 7th Ave. {Or, at least would-be upscale, because it wasn't so hot).

Posted by: Bob Marvin at October 1, 2009 10:59 AM

I remember Le Parc Gourmet. Long time ago...

Posted by: broker at October 1, 2009 11:01 AM

Do you remember Circles where Two Boots is now?

Posted by: broker at October 1, 2009 11:02 AM

I agree that 5th has been better than 7th, but recently I have to say that 7th is getting tons better and my more favorite places are, in fact on 7th...

Olive Vine
Beer Table
Mango
Chiles and Chocolate
Fonda
La Taqueria
Roma Pizza
Oshima (best sushi besides Blue Ribbon in PS)

All on 7th...

Posted by: 11217 at October 1, 2009 11:04 AM

But THE BEST Thai in Park Slope is Song (on 5th) imho.

Posted by: 11217 at October 1, 2009 11:07 AM

am i the only one who things restaurants are just silly?

*rob*

Posted by: Butterfly at October 1, 2009 11:08 AM

Blue Ribbon
Blue Ribbon Sushi
Stone Park
'sNICE
La Bogota
Nana
Alchemy
Osteria
Bonnie's Grill
Al Di La
Brooklyn Fish Camp
Press
Los Pollitos
Pizzatown
Miriam
Chocolate Room

5th Ave...

Posted by: broker at October 1, 2009 11:12 AM

Yup, broker and you're forgetting:

Tacos Nuevo Mexico! (So good!)

But I still frequent the places I mentioned on 7th more than those on 5th (except Al Di La) which I go to often.

7th ave has plenty of great places to eat but I just live far enough away from 7th ave I just don't go there anymore.

also restaurants are silly but so are dirty dishes.

Posted by: Santa at October 1, 2009 11:27 AM

that's what styrofoam plates and polystyrene utensils are for, duh ;)

BSD - totally agreed
Park Slope has WAY too many Thai joints
I would LOVE to see a REAL southern comfort food joint
or a nice West Indian place!

Posted by: gemini10 at October 1, 2009 12:02 PM

Girls, girls, stop fighting! There is good food everywhere - and it's all within walking distance. There are like eight Thai restaurants I can think of on 5th AND 7th.

Somebody recently said that Korean would be the new Thai - I am still waiting!

Posted by: bupe at October 1, 2009 12:04 PM

Broker.

Circles was one of our regular places for eating out when we had a small child in the '80s.

"Somebody recently said that Korean would be the new Thai - I am still waiting!"

One of the best Korean places in the city is on 7th Avenue and Garfield Place...MOIM!

I've brought Korean friends there who prefer it over anything in Koreatown!

One of the best restaurants in PS, if you ask me. Forgot that one on the list...

Posted by: 11217 at October 1, 2009 12:12 PM

broker, great list...

+
Convivium Osteria
Canaille
Miriam
Luscious
Blue Sky Bakery

and if you want coffee, of course, Gorilla.

Posted by: dwarbi at October 1, 2009 12:12 PM

... but there are also plenty of great places on 7th. The problem is walking past all the great ones on 5th to get there!

Posted by: dwarbi at October 1, 2009 12:14 PM

This conversation just proves how awesome the selection of restaurants is in PS. 5th AND 7th!

And 4th...Ghenet (Ethiopian) is FANTASTIC!

Zuzu Ramen (also on 4th) is delicious.

And there's a new place called LOT 21 on 6th Avenue right across from where the new Lucali's is opening. So all over, there is good stuff.

Posted by: 11217 at October 1, 2009 12:17 PM

Ghenet is one of my faves in the nabe
LOVEEEEE blue Sky Bakery
not into Miriam - have to admit. I ate once and really nejoyed it, went back ordered the same thing a month later and it was dry and overcooked
oh well
Oh! - good one 11217 I will check our Moim
did you make it over to Fonda yet? that place is packed

Posted by: gemini10 at October 1, 2009 12:44 PM

Yeah, I have tried Fonda...I really like it a lot. Definitely worth a visit! The place was totally packed!

Just so you know, Moim is slightly hidden as it's off 7th Avenue just a bit heading towards 8th Avenue on Garfield...It has a multi-colored awning.

P.S. That space right there on the corner (formerly HaNaBi) is being turned into a Wine Bar, or so I'm told. They were working on it a lot over the weekend. The rest of the space farther down 7th has been turned into a new chicken and custard place called Chickadee Chick, which I have yet to try...

I'm not into Miriam anymore either, and I just forgot my favorite brunch spot in the hood (and it's on 5th) which is Get Fresh Table and Market. I go at least a couple times a month. LOVE that place!

Posted by: 11217 at October 1, 2009 12:51 PM

11217
i went to Get Fresh this weekend for sat brunch
have to say - wasn't into what I ordered at all. it was reallllllly bland and uninspired - egg frittata with greens and white bean and quinoa - it needed a lot of seasoning. The ice tea was really tasty - perhaps I will go again and try something else

Posted by: gemini10 at October 1, 2009 12:57 PM

Hmmmm...I've only ever had the egg sandwich with a nice big cup of Stumptown Coffee, and as someone who doesn't regularly eat a ton of breakfast, the simplicity and freshness of that always really hits the spot for me.

Definitely give it another try some time...

"am i the only one who things restaurants are just silly?"

only if:
- have no disposable income
- not cultured enough to have an interest in food variety
- don't value spending nice time conversing with friends/loved ones

other than that, totally. this new fad will pass.

Posted by: BSD at October 1, 2009 1:02 PM

Bob Marvin.

I am sure I was your busperson or waitress at some point as I was one of the "circle girls" which is what we were called back then. Small world...

Posted by: broker at October 1, 2009 1:13 PM

11217 - ok I will
I have stopped in there a few times about a year ago before their whole move into seated dining and I love supporting locally grown stuff!

Posted by: gemini10 at October 1, 2009 1:15 PM

They grow all their herbs out on the back deck too, Gem!

What about all the wonderful places on 3rd Ave.

-Bar Tano
-Atlantic Resturante
-Tony's Restaurant
- that BEER bar btw 11th and 12th on 3rd ave
- Crooked TAIL CAFE

Posted by: Gowanus_Bklyn at October 1, 2009 2:16 PM

I think you all eat out too much. If you didn't you could afford that house on the park block.

Posted by: Petebklyn at October 1, 2009 2:21 PM

"I think you all eat out too much. If you didn't you could afford that house on the park block."

some people end up affording that house BECAUSE theyre good at eating out.

oh, you meant something else. nevermind.

BSD, those kinds of comments are reserved for DIBS!

BTW, DIBS, what's the food scene like in BS?

Posted by: bupe at October 1, 2009 4:05 PM

5th avenue = "RESTAURANT ROW" .......nuf said.

Posted by: landlord at October 1, 2009 6:26 PM

Gowanus - 3ed avenue? where is that?

Posted by: landlord at October 1, 2009 6:28 PM

This was basically the only Thai choice, along with Lemongrass, on 7th when I moved to the neighborhood in 1992. The food has always been mediocre, but I was impressed by the places's longevity and rooted for it to survive.

Why is no one mentioning Taro? It is, in my opinion, the most authentic sushi in PS, closely followed by Blue Ribbon (If BR wasn't so expensive, I'd say they were equals.)

I am sorry, but all those spots on 3rd Ave are kind of lame (except for I haven't been to the beer bar.)

I do remember, years ago, 7th Ave was the main strip in the Slope, the it switched to 5th; now there seems to be some sort of a tug-of-war between the two streets. Good! We could use two restaurant rows.
