Closing Bell: The Pumpkins of Cobble Hill

cobble-hill-pumpkins-1009.jpg
It's time for what's become an annual Cobble Hill tradition: the great Kane Street pumpkin line-up. Every year (except one) since 1998, local artist Jane Greengold along with home owner Chip Gray have carved 100 or so pumpkins to line the fence of 176 Kane Street at the corner of Strong Place in Cobble Hill. They're lit on Halloween night and then left their to atrophy and die. As the tipster who sent this in wrote, "It's a very temporary, very local work of public art."

My favorite display of Pumpkins in Brooklyn! They actually get better over time, here are some from 2006 (you will need to scroll down)

it is so great, nice to know the background on it. as they decay, it just gets more awesome. CG loves holiday decorations. it's kind of cute, even the non-decorating holidays get the full treatment from the neighborhood from elaborate easter bunny displays to leprachauns chasing pots of gold. this one is definitely a favorite though.

Which year didn't they do it? And for what reason?

I saw the pumpkins being prepared the other day. Mr. Gray (I guess that is who it was) was punching holes in their bottoms. I said "YEAH! The pumpkins are coming back! They're the highlight of Halloween!"

Left THERE to die. Please.

I look forward to these every year, love when they start to decay! Jane & Chip, if you're reading, thanks for doing such a fun thing for the neighborhood!

I guess I'm going to be the lone hater here. I think it's a fantastic display BEFORE these little pumpkins start to rot. Year after year, once they start to rot (atrophy is too nice of a word), I have to avoid the house on my way home from the subway. It never dawned on me that this was an art project; in fact, the first year I saw this, I wondered if the owner had died, leaving no one to clean up the nasty mess.
