Checking In On Fulton Mall Arby's

arbys-fulton-1009.jpg
Earlier this week Lost City stopped by the Arby's at 372 Fulton Street on the Fulton Mall in Downtown Brooklyn. Since finally gaining approval from LPC in June for the interior renovation, the franchisee has been working steadily on the space. Lost City was able to stick its head inside and learned that the fast food joint will be ready to open "in a few weeks." Curious, we decided to head over there yesterday afternoon and were able get take this photo from the doorway. You can't really see the build-out at the rear which is where most of the renovation action is happening but there's certainly plenty of activity going on.

Arby's? ( yuck ) May West and Jimmy Durante are turning over in their graves.

Miss Edna Lewis is rotating in her grave, and I am depressed as hell. Who could have imagined that this historic treasure could actually take a step DOWN from TGI Friday's? Just sparing a moment to remember clam belly platters lit by gaslight sconces, courtly waiters and snowy linens, and the all-too-brief culinary renaissance under the masterful hand of Miss Edna.

Ya want fries with that?

As much as I wish someone else had taken the space and made a real restaurant out of it, better Arby's than empty. Boarded up could have meant fire, burst pipes and water damage, unchecked termites and all kinds of other neglect issues. Since the interior is landmarked, I'm hoping that care and precaution is being used in working with the Victorian decor that works for them, and covering up temporarily that which does not. They will not be able to rip anything out permanently.

Two regulars, an order of potato cakes, and a root beer, please. Here's a twenty.

I'd prefer a Roy Rogers

I eat plenty of fast food but arby's is horrible.
And a nail salon upstairs where the family that used to own run the place lived (pre-Edna Lewis days)

I think it's just sort of amusing... fast food joint takes over a fancy landmarked property. Silly indeed. I don't like Arby's very much -- but when I was a kid, I could not get enough Arby's Sauce! I got my mom to buy the bottles of it and I would mix it with ketchup so it would last! Mmmm.

> better Arby's than empty...

I guess, though I find myself wondering if "death with dignity" would be a better fate than this.

I wish they could have moved the whole interior to a different location so it could be really enjoyed and respected. But that's not what landmark is about. ( sigh )

Roy is far far better. but that arby sauce was good.

I'd bet my right arm that not one of you ever ate here when it was Gage and Tollner.

I can hardly bear to watch this. Hope to hell they don't f*** up that amazing interior. And, yeh Brenda, Edna Lewis was a goddess and one of the finest chefs to ever cook in this town. When she was well into her 70s, she was invited to make the dessert for a banquet in Atlanta. She took the train from NYC with her pie crusts packed in ice in large tea crates. What a dame.
