Brownstoner Reader Survey
It's been two and a half years since the last time we took a reader survey. When we took the last survey the market was still in the throes of optimism; now, as we all know, the world's a slightly different place. So while we gotta do this so that we can have some fresh data to give potential advertisers, it'll also be interesting to see how the demographics and psychology of the readership has shifted. As always, we'll share the data with you and, as always, we thank you for your participation. If you have five minutes, please take the survey here.

Mr. B, you didn't put Kensington as one of your categories for neighborhood question (Question 10) and you have no "other" choice in the drop down either. I refuse to take the survey until my neighborhood is recognized by Brownstoner :o).
Posted by: Kensingtonian at October 14, 2009 10:00 AM
Oh, crap, sorry. Will add...
Posted by: brownstoner at October 14, 2009 10:05 AM
really didn't understand question - trustworthiness of brownstoner 'brand'.
Posted by: Petebklyn at October 14, 2009 10:05 AM
Done.
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at October 14, 2009 10:06 AM
I caouldn't find a "squatter" option on the pulldowns
Posted by: dittoburg at October 14, 2009 10:21 AM
lol ditto. im going to go take this, but before i do, i want to know if it's going to hurt my already fragile self esteem?

I'll be very curious to see the results of this poll. I just took it.
Posted by: infinitejester at October 14, 2009 10:51 AM
Brownstoner, PLG is not on question #18 and because we own in PLG and plan to stay at least another 10 years I also can't take the survey until that's corrected.
Posted by: traditionalmod at October 14, 2009 11:02 AM
Also done this morning.
I wish I had my survey from 2 years ago to compare.

How come our only choices of where we'd invest in real estate are in Brooklyn? I don't have plans to move any time soon, but if I did, I'd be looking in Manhattan or the Bronx before I looked anywhere in Brooklyn. If I want Brooklyn I'll stay in my current house.
I'd be interested in the answers to the question of how long you've lived in Brooklyn, and how long you've owned property in Brooklyn.
I wonder if I'm the only person on this site who will cop to an annual household income of less than $250,000.

"I wonder if I'm the only person on this site who will cop to an annual household income of less than $250,000."
I think there are more of us here than you think. A lot more, and making a lot less.
Posted by: Montrose Morris at October 14, 2009 11:29 AM
"I think there are more of us here than you think. A lot more, and making a lot less."
Well that's comforting. I was somehow under the impression that almost everyone here claims to make in the mid-six figures working 'in the arts.'
Posted by: Sparafucile at October 14, 2009 11:37 AM
LOL i bet im the only one who cops to making less than less than 50K (much less) a year!
*rob*
Posted by: Butterfly at October 14, 2009 11:44 AM
Rob, the "household income" section is just aspirational. Knock yourself out.
Posted by: dittoburg at October 14, 2009 11:52 AM
A quarter of a million dollars? I wish.
Posted by: Montrose Morris at October 14, 2009 11:54 AM
Mr. B;
How about adding an "income-o-meter" widget to the post? We can watch how it move around as people respond.
Posted by: benson at October 14, 2009 11:54 AM
Rob I make less than you.
so don't get too happy and think you're the poorest person on here.
Posted by: Santa at October 14, 2009 11:58 AM
Do disbursements from a trust fund count as income?
Posted by: dirty_hipster at October 14, 2009 12:19 PM
I got tripped up too with "trustworthiness of the Brownstoner brand." Was not sure what the brand was. Could not help taking into account the variable trustworthiness of the comments. That lead to me rating it a 3. But maybe I'm misinterpreting. I'm not a freakin advertising executive over here. I think I messed up . . . . I think it should have been higher. Sorry. I think despite the variable trustworthiness of the comments, that the "brand" has higher trustworthiness than a "3." More like "4". Can I have a do over? Am I overthinking this?
Posted by: Nomi at October 14, 2009 12:24 PM
I'm an old lady, LOL. Retired, zero debt, own my condo free and clear and can live nicely on investment income <30k !!
I will let you young folks pay my social security starting sometime next year, just gravy from my perspective.
Posted by: MarionG at October 14, 2009 12:47 PM
I thought you needed to be independently wealthy to post here??
Posted by: infinitejester at October 14, 2009 1:31 PM
a few currencies come to mind where my salary would translate to over one million per yr
Posted by: more4less at October 14, 2009 2:12 PM
Still no correct Mr. B. I guess I am not taking the survey.
Posted by: Kensingtonian at October 14, 2009 2:14 PM
I took the survey, even though PLG wasn't listed as a place for investment. I listed "Crown Hts., even though (sorry M.M.) that's really my second choice.
BTW, my income is under $250,000 and was less than that figure even before I retired. However, IMO I'm rich, because I have everything I want!

correction
Posted by: Kensingtonian at October 14, 2009 2:14 PM
No option for those among us who live in tents?
Posted by: CarrollGardened at October 14, 2009 2:24 PM
Yeah! Uh. Hello? What's with the anti-tent discrimination?
Posted by: Tent_Loving_Troll at October 14, 2009 2:26 PM
"a few currencies come to mind where my salary would translate to over one million per yr"
Great line, M4L. The old lira would be one.
Last time I was in Jamaica, a US dollar was worth $68J. Gave one pause just buying a magazine at the airport for the sticker price of $500.
Posted by: Montrose Morris at October 14, 2009 2:27 PM
Can I count illegal immigrants as dependants???
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at October 14, 2009 2:29 PM
Sorry, turns out we can't change the content of the questions once the survey has begun :(
Posted by: brownstoner at October 14, 2009 2:34 PM
dibs, not if you don't let them live under your roof. under you does count
Posted by: more4less at October 14, 2009 2:35 PM
As long as everyone's complaining, there's no manufacturing, or wholesale/distribution, and there's nothing btw Ninth Grade and high school!
As far as the income thing, at least the survey recognizes that there are a lot of well off people in this town; a lot of surveys stop at 100k.
Posted by: denton at October 14, 2009 2:36 PM
MM, albeit Bob sees crown heights as 2nd choice, it remains my first choice albeit the "investmt" has been negative cashflow so far - wondering why that's the case
Posted by: more4less at October 14, 2009 2:37 PM
Brownstoner brand: Isn't it how much you trust *the site* not those silly individuals on it such as myself whose household income is less than $250,000 per year?
Posted by: mopar at October 14, 2009 2:38 PM
Denton, aren't your a money manager?
Posted by: more4less at October 14, 2009 2:38 PM
"Sorry, turns out we can't change the content of the questions once the survey has begun :("
Why not? The Republicans do that all the time.

Posted by: brownstoner at October 14, 2009 2:34 PM
Oh well, I guess I'll be left out. I totally could have skewed that 25-29 brownstoner age category numbers.
Posted by: Kensingtonian at October 14, 2009 3:41 PM
AHGGG! "consume" the New York Times and other media!! Stop with the grating neologisms already.
Posted by: cmu at October 14, 2009 3:44 PM
I would have liked a "Nonprofit" job category.
Posted by: BrooklynZoo at October 14, 2009 4:00 PM
cmu, I hope to see you again at Union Hall tomorrow night. Details in the Forum.
Posted by: Biff Champion at October 14, 2009 4:03 PM
"Denton, aren't your a money manager?"
Huh? My firm (and I) perform engineering and diagnostic services on the mechanical equipment of large NYC office buildings. We also do some wholesale distribution and light manufacturing related to this. I dabble in the markets, photography, cooking, wine, and a few other things. Can't all be about work.
Posted by: denton at October 14, 2009 4:20 PM
Totally agree, CMU. And I'm swearing off events/places/products that are launched or curated.
Posted by: tinarina at October 14, 2009 4:34 PM
"I totally could have skewed that 25-29 brownstoner age category numbers"
I already did that :-)
Posted by: Bob Marvin at October 14, 2009 4:39 PM
also didn't put PLG as a good investment neighborhood when this is a gentrifying area.
Posted by: cmar7785 at October 14, 2009 5:17 PM
You didn't put in a "pathetically poor" category. I'm in that one. :)
Posted by: bxgrl at October 14, 2009 5:28 PM
I'll be the first to admit I fall in the over 250k category. Is that wrong to admit? It's funny how stating you are poor is bold and honest but saying you are wealthy is seen as arrogant and obnoxious.
Posted by: randolph at October 14, 2009 5:37 PM
both are obnoxious
Posted by: Santa at October 14, 2009 5:52 PM
Santa isn't real.
Posted by: randolph at October 14, 2009 6:01 PM
Santa is right. Anyway, I think Santa has health insurance. That is nice!
Posted by: mopar at October 14, 2009 6:34 PM
Randi, it is arrogant and obnoxious.
Posted by: tinarina at October 14, 2009 8:29 PM
i do have health insurance.
but through a company that layed me off a year ago.
Posted by: Santa at October 14, 2009 11:07 PM
How about asking about race and ethnicity? Mr B asked everything about demographics of the Brownstoner readership except for that.
