Brooklyn Food & Drink Round-Up

game.jpg
Game Night at Char No. 4
196 Smith Street, near Baltic Street, Boerum Hill; (718) 643-2106
Char No. 4 will be hosting a weekly Game Night on Wednesdays — tonight through January 27. New York magazine says, "Call two days ahead to preorder a whole smoked game bird, each of which comes with a different side dish like dirty rice. Squab and quail each serve one ($24), and guinea hen and duck feed two to three apiece ($65)."

Brooklyn's Best Sandwich?
Chowhound HankyT has posted an admittedly incomplete list of Brooklyn's top ten sandwiches:

*Panelle Special at Ferdinando's
*Grilled Pork Banh Mi at Ba Xuyen
*DeFonte's Roast Beef, Eggplant, Fresh Mozz, Gravy, S&P (seeded hero)
*Torta from Pueblo Market (not sure which variety)
*Chicken Cutlet Hero from Catene
*Lioni's hero (not sure which one)
*Cubano from Cibao on Smith
*Falafel from ??? used to say The Fountain but I'm not so sure anymore.
*Rollin' Roast Beef (as long as you put onions, gravy, salt and pepper on it)
*Spicy Beef Patty inside coco bread from Christie's

Can you think of any that this 'Hound is leaving out?

Barcade's 5th Anniversary Party
Barcade is celebrating their 5th birthday tomorrow night (Thursday, October 15), says Examiner.com. According to Barcade's Facebook invite, they'll be "opening early at 2pm and will be grilling out with free burgers and hot dogs," and their "crazy ass draft menu" includes Brooklyn Manhattan Project (which "tastes like a Manhattan. Seriously.") and Sixpoint Hops of Love.

After the jump: Early reviews of Ultimate Burgers and Dogs and Henry Public, a new sports bar on Fulton, Halloween at Habana, and a re-opening date for Totonno's...

Early Report: Ultimate Burgers and Dogs
243 DeGraw, between Court and Clinton, Cobble Hill
Ultimate is now open in the old Chicory space, and one Lost City commenter shares some constructive criticism: "Had a burger and tots there this weekend, both of which were good. This place would be wise to include some veggie options... My wife is a vegetarian and left empty handed as there was nothing on the menu other than sides that she could eat."

Early Report: Henry Public
329 Henry Street, near Pacific Street, Cobble Hill; (718) 852-8630
In more Cobble Hill news, Chowhound jmh reports on this new spot: "The transformation of the space from its former incarnation as a TV repair shop is amazing. You would think it had always been a pub... We tried the burger, which was very good (grass-fed beef ground on premises, and cooked to order). The food menu is limited here; the drinks seem to be the main thing. The cocktail list has some interesting house creations, and they have several beers on tap (I had an extremely fresh Six Points Oatmeal Stout)."

Quick Bites
Clinton Hill Blog says that Fulton Street may be getting a new sports bar between Olivino and Country House Diner. A commenter says, "It’s two store-fronts wide, and I saw them loading in HDTV after HDTV the other day." ...Meanwhile, Slice says that Totonno's in Coney Island should be reopening in November... And Clinton Hill Blog also reports on the two free Halloween parties at Habana Outpost. The kids' party runs from 4pm to 6pm, and the grown-up party takes place from 9pm to 4am in the Lowpost Lounge (below Habana Outpost).

That bird looks like it's high-fiving someone. Disturbing. Seriously disturbing.

the veggie pattie at Christies is better than their beef. Also the bbq chicken pattie at Lil Miss Muffin and her Stuffin (that might be the name) is waaay better than anything at christies. However the coco bread at christies is mindblowing.

as far as best sandwiches go...

RIP the sicilian chickpea panelle from tempo presto. that sandwich alone should have kept that place in business. oh, and the meatloaf. that meatloaf sandwich got me through my pregnancy.

One of top 10 sammiches has to be the Meatloaf Sammich at Rye in the Burg.

Best sandwich is a newbie-the Turkey Leg Sandwich at Henry Public. They've been open less than a week and I've already had 3.

No! Best sandwich is the Sidecar Club at Sidecar in the South Slope: oven roasted turkey breast, bacon, cave aged gruyere, granny smith apples, thin sliced red onion and sun dried tomato mayo on grilled sour dough

Joe's Superette fried-to-order rice balls and croquettes (bite size!!! 50 cents each!) are to die for! It is just behind the park and do not be scared by its appearance they are GREAT! I am told so are his heroes...

" oe's upperette" (the sign is falling apart) is amazing for the rice balls and prosciutto balls.

Paneantico on Third Avenue in Bay Ridge has stellar sandwiches and should be included on this list...but alas it is not...

The salami sandwich with hot peppers at Brooklyn Larder is phenomenal. Also addicted to their tuna.

try the muffuletta (new orleans style sub) at fort defiance in red hook .... awesome ....

I ate at Ultimate this weekend, too. Not bad, but when you consider you have to eat two hotdogs at $3.50-5.75 to get filled up, it's not that much of a bargain. Substituting the free chips with tater tots for a buck helps. I wrote about it and have pics here.

I've also consumed Henry Public's divine turkey leg sandwich _three times_ this week. Twice in a row. Just thinking about it makes me shiver--it's the very definition of "savory."

The chicken reminds me of the poor folks found at Pompeii, ossified in flight from the volcano...
