StreetLevel: Slope's Drama Cafe Becoming a Latin Joint

drama%20cafe%20new%2009%202009.JPG
Per the photo above, the old Drama Cafe space on 5th Avenue near the corner of 4th Street appears to be transforming into "Rico Cafe," and it will specialize in "Latin flavor." Drama closed a couple years back. The inside of the space doesn't look like it's seen any major upgrades during that time, but perhaps they will be forthcoming. GMAP

I could never figure out what Drama Cafe was supposed to be about. As far as I could tell, it had a fancy wood bar and lots of bottles lined up but no bartender, there was one friendly guy in the back who would whip up some Jamaican food for you by himself, and some coffee. On one side in the front, there was a very old fashioned looking office, divided from ther restaurant by some drapes. Never saw anyone in there. Wasn't open very long.

I agree.

I walk by here all the time, I couldn't even recall what had been there before when I saw the signs of life for this new store.

Isn't that the building with a crazy landlord, who I believe was "running" the briefly lived Drama Cafe? Hopefully this place fares better.

I was just about to ask about the crazy landlady. I believe its the same building. The tenants had a running blog about how crazy she is. Heard she slept with the previous owner to get the building for a song.

This space has had a steady succession of bad idea business that are unappealing and poorly run. Ill conceived. Ill executed. Ill will befall this new business as well.

If the landlord is the same crazy lady then the new buisness owne will have a very hard time. He should have googled the address.

I dont know if this place will be good enough to break the bad run of failed establishements preceding it - but if the name is any indication, I give it 3mo at best

Yea. That's a terrible name.

The woman running the building is horrendous. I lived in it with someone for one month back in 2005. Despite regular complaints, we had almost no heat, and it was late november/early december. I had to sleep fully clothed, jackets, etc. As far as the previous business? The place (Drama Cafe) was the shop of the nasty building owner, and it was closed by the health department at the beginning of last year. I don't think she was ever able to re-open it, and she eventually gave up (putting up a "for rent" sign). I would hope this business has as little to do with the landlord as possible.
