Sleepless on Livingston

According to the Livingston Street resident who sent in this video, it's been hard to get any sleep the past couple of nights. After watching, we can see why!

Street repaving. NO, they shouldn't be doing it a t night but by tomorrow it'll likely be finished.

What a complaining douche! Cry me a river - the city fixing the roads! at night! while the street traffic is at it's lowest! how dare they!

& shame on brownstoner for giving this complaining douche attention by posting his/her selfish complaint.

Posted by: CookieCutterBrownstone at September 22, 2009 9:59 AM

Really. This happens every few years in every neighborhood. This guy expects the city to shut down major roads during the day?

Posted by: BH76 at September 22, 2009 10:12 AM

Not fair rob. We've had serious construction going on well past midnight - in violation of code big time - for several nights on end before and I was a wreck at work and as a parent after a while. My 3 year old (at the time) was able to sleep through it, but we weren't! It really wrecked me.

Had to start calling 311 and so on to try to get it stopped. It didn't work, as paying the fines was worth it for them. to push through the nights. And it was infuriating, seriously. So having comments like "waaaaaaaa" "cry me a river" etc. is really shitty, and makes an already bad situation one is trying to solve (in this case by sending the tape to brownstoner) even worse.

Posted by: Nokilissa at September 22, 2009 10:13 AM

Ah. I didn't read that this was street repair, I thought it was just developer construction. Never mind. Carry on.

Posted by: Nokilissa at September 22, 2009 10:14 AM

Is it unfair that you never got notice that they were going to do this? Yes. But having lived through this on Court St last year I say get some ear plugs and it will be over in a night or two. Chalk it up to the joy of living in NYC.

Once again - "waaaaaaaaaaaaa" & "cry me a river". You win the biggest self-entitled p^&sy award. Stop by your nearest Duane Reade to pick up some tampons.

Haven't people learned by now that the only noise you are allowed to complain about in Brooklyn is noise associated with toddlers?

Posted by: northsloperenter at September 22, 2009 10:19 AM

annoying here last night. At least it should just be one night. They were out front of our place (62 Livingston) basically from 11:00 to 2:30-3:00. The steamroller was shaking the whole building.
The issue everyone here along livingston is having is that this isn't a major street that has to be done during the night. This block of livingston (between Clinton and Court) is virtually all residential and one-way... so basically the city decided that we should all have to stay up for a night so that some cars driving through during the day don't have to drive an extra block today while circling around looking for parking. nice, the all mighty automobile wins again.

I'm around the corner. And there were signs up, just with the wrong date. Was supposed to be done last week but wasn't. Never understood why DOT does that, puts up signs saying street will be paved on X date. And then do it on Y date without changing the signs in advance.

Posted by: HoneysuckleWeeks at September 22, 2009 10:40 AM

There was notice. All the buildings got letters in advance and there were signs on the street. Everyone knew (or should have) that this was being done. We all complain when these things are not done efficiently; well, this was.

Posted by: BH76 at September 22, 2009 10:40 AM

actually, the noise sucked but was to be expected. but what was not expected was the overwhelming concentration of the fumes, dust, and debris that were swirling through the air. closed windows did nothing for it and the apartment smelled like a tar pit. street looks great now, but would've preferred the noxious gasses to have dissipated by the time one would like to get some sleep.

"Never understood why DOT does that, puts up signs saying street will be paved on X date. And then do it on Y date without changing the signs in advance."

Because they are union and by definition lazy & incompetent.

the owner of the building i live in doing construction right above us at times not allowed. do i complain and whine about it? nah. whatever. people need to get stuff done. maybe if the noise bothered me or got in the way of sleep i would be annoying tho, so i guess you have a valid complaint.

im a firm believer in the "dont make waves" mentality tho.

That video looks like it could have been right outside my window. It honestly wasn't that bad. The rumbling of the building was worse than the noise. Earplugs and an Ambien and I slept right through it.

Actually, no. The city decided to do your predominantly residential block at the same time it resurfaced the more commercial part of Livingston Street, which is a major street and does need to be done at night. The city decided to plan the job for operational efficiencies and economies, rather than your convenience. These jobs generally are one night for milling and a week or so later, one night for paving, every five to ten years. Not too big a price to pay, is it?

Posted by: g man at September 22, 2009 11:56 AM

"Not too big a price to pay, is it?"

Not too big a price to pay for what?

You can pave the streets between 6:00am and 10:00pm just as well as between 11:00pm and 3:00am.

During the day you inconvenience drivers who have alternate routes even if they grumble about it.

At night you inconvenience residents who likely really don't have another option to go somewhere else and sleep and are unlikely to get a break from their boss the next day because a steamroller kept them up for 4 of the 7 hours they could have slept the previous night.

There is no good reason to be doing non-emergency road work between 10:00pm and 6:00am on a residential block.

Posted by: northsloperenter at September 22, 2009 12:13 PM

Not too [high] a price to pay for smooth streets, constructed in the most economical way for the city and its contractor.

some people need to work the nightshift, for various reasons. not everyone can be a day-bird

Just a thought: although I'm sure not inconveniencing drivers is high on the list of reasons for nighttime construction, it could also be to lower exposure to the dust and fumes to pedestrians and businesses during daytime hours...

Also if you think that's bad, try living next to the prospect expressway when they decide to strip and repaint the overpasses: WEEKS of nighttime noise, not days.

Geez Cookiecutterbrownie, misanthropic/misogynistic much?

I get the biggest 'self-entitled pussy' award, requiring my picking up tampons, because I was empathizing somewhat with the original poster, and had mistakenly thought the noise pollutants at 3am were private contractors saving money - much like we'd been through in the past?

Get some sleep. My god.

"Not too [high] a price to pay for smooth streets, constructed in the most economical way for the city and its contractor."

I'm not buying the argument that the city needs to do this work in the middle of the night in order to be "economical".

Sounds like an excuse someone made up when they were given some crap for it rather than a legitimate reason.

"some people need to work the nightshift, for various reasons. not everyone can be a day-bird"

rob -- you are the master of stating something which is both true and completely irrelevant.

Had the city claimed the work was done for the benefit of residents who work the night shift, what you say would matter here, but I don't believe they've trotted out that excuse yet.

Posted by: northsloperenter at September 22, 2009 2:12 PM

Perhaps the construction is done at night because there are fewer pedestrians and cars that get in the way of the heavy machinery, therefore making the construction quicker and safer. the noise is unfortunate. Let me tell you about Labor Day weekend in Crown heights!
