Looks as if today's hot topic is a mailbox on the Forum. Amazing which stimuli evoke passioned responses.

LOL, Arkady. I'm sure the bike lane thread will bring out the best of everyone as well.

Delepp, is that a firm or industry specific restriction regarding 401k changes once per qtr?

Posted by: more4less at September 30, 2009 10:29 AM

everytime i ask to opt out of the 401K, my employer ignores my request. :-/ it's the biggest waste of money, for me anyway. and i just wanna take out what i already put in it. ive been doing it for years and seriously i think i only have like a few hundred dollars in it anyway. lol

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at September 30, 2009 10:35 AM

chicken, you recommending all-cash, start short positions, go mainly cash,...?

Posted by: more4less at September 30, 2009 10:35 AM

rob - you are absolutely not required to contribute to your 401k plan. if you withdraw the money from your 401k, they will tax it heavily BUT you should absolutely not have to contribute to it if you don't want to. Speak to your payroll department (or if you don't have payroll people, speak to someone in HR who handles benefits). Or if your 401k is managed by a large company, like Fidelity or whatnot, you can probably opt out online or by calling the company managing your 401k.

Posted by: CG_ups at September 30, 2009 10:36 AM

OK, talk to us lay people. What are you finance/investment/trading types seeing today and just how spooked are you?

Posted by: slopefarm at September 30, 2009 10:37 AM

"chicken, you recommending all-cash, start short positions, go mainly cash,...?

Posted by: more4less at September 30, 2009 10:35 AM"

So much depends on your individual risk and liquidity profile - but would certainly have a decent slug in cash.
If you're paying aggressively then small short positions with tight stops in industries with high operational leverage and have benefitted from replenishing inventories of late.

Posted by: the chicken at September 30, 2009 10:41 AM

Not spooked. Selloff has been widely anticipated and been the consensus viewpoint. it isn't happening with any strength whatsoever. I believe we'll get a string year-end rally as investment professionals are largely lagging the indices and show that they have too much cash. Clients aren't going to want to see that at year end. Rally into year-end and then a sell off.

GDP numbers the next few quarters are likely to be surprisingly strong. Unemployment is a lagging indicator.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at September 30, 2009 10:42 AM

two investment professional, two divergent opinions. Just goes to show that it's a mug's game...

Posted by: the chicken at September 30, 2009 10:46 AM

Why would u opt out of 401K...it's free money...u don't have to buy equities...u can short them(SDS)...u can buy gold...u can buy a money mkt fund....it's tax free money 'til Congress takes it away.....Slopefarm turn off the lights the party's over....1st stop SPX 920...the forecast calls for PAIN....lots of it

Posted by: bklyn14 at September 30, 2009 10:46 AM

self contributions to 401k are not free money, they are taken out of your paycheck before taxes. it's money that you've earned. so essentially it's your own money but you are deferring your tax payment until when you withdraw it at retirement. if someone needs the cash now, then it makes sense for him to cease contributing to his 401k, as is his right.

the company match is free money but isn't worth creating financial hardship for oneself just to make the 401k contribution.

Posted by: CG_ups at September 30, 2009 10:50 AM

Chicken, I'm all cash currently. cashed out recently when mkt stopped powering up. I was itchy to lock in the gains and partly so I can brag to my friends I'm up for the crisis vs they're still climbing out of their holes. I would say my risk tolerance is high. in my mind, I would like to think I'm conservative but my actions reflect that of high risk investor - ie I usually have all $$$ in 5 or less equity positions

Posted by: more4less at September 30, 2009 10:52 AM

anyone thinks that the tax rate will be super high by time we're eligible to withdraw from retirement accts - ie big enough increase in tax rates to eliminate the benefits of the deferral of current contributions?

Posted by: more4less at September 30, 2009 10:56 AM

M4L, presumably you'll be in a lower tax bracket post retirement so then your lower tax bracket in the future would have to rise above your current tax bracket. that would probably be a big jump, no? also, you'd be paying taxes on that income now, versus deferring payment for 30+ years, so also add in the difference of paying those taxes now versus being able to invest that money. etc. If you can afford it, putting away for retirement is a good thing. esp since we'll probably won't have social security benefits like currently paid out.

Posted by: CG_ups at September 30, 2009 11:02 AM

M4L, although a 5 stock portfolio is not truly diversified it's also not necessarily high risk if they are low-beta and liquid.

I personally have ultra low risk tolerance for my own personal investments - I don't need to be much wealthier but I can't afford to be poor.

Posted by: the chicken at September 30, 2009 11:03 AM

NO, m4l. When you're withdrawing from your 401k you will have lower expenses in those years (you will have paid of your mortgage, not be renting and therefore have lower monthly outlays) and you'll be earning less.

So you will be in a lower tax bracket.

ANNOUNCEMENT:

CobbleSnaps Productions is CANCELING the October 15th event a Union Hall.

Please accept our apologies. Many thanks to the posters that were participating in the planning of and activities for the event.

Posted by: cobblehiller at September 30, 2009 11:03 AM

"401 k contributions r taken out of your pay check before taxes" CG that's the whole point and that's actually a good thing--unless u enjoy paying taxes. Saving and investing your money tax free is the same as receiving after tax income every 2 weeks ? Really ? Why r 401 k plans so popular? Financial hardship might be what one encounters when you're 59 and relying on a broke gov't

Posted by: bklyn14 at September 30, 2009 11:07 AM

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at September 30, 2009 11:13 AM

chiller - i hope that it is not cancelled due to the craziness that have been going on recently. i'm sorry that you and others have been the target of some awful, mean comments. the name calling and nastiness have been completely out of line. you and snappy shouldn't have to feel like you're doing a lot of work for an ungrateful audience, so you shouldn't have to be the organizer for the party if you don't want to do it. but hopefully you don't take the nastiness to heart.

Posted by: CG_ups at September 30, 2009 11:13 AM

hah dibs

Posted by: dirty_hipster at September 30, 2009 11:15 AM

I just can't do it.

If anyone wants to make up another event, feel free. I just can't participate.

Posted by: cobblehiller at September 30, 2009 11:16 AM

banks LOVE deposits right now. you can probably roll it into another CD. call your bank and ask for rates. i know that chase often has unadvertised "banker's rates" that can be better than the publicly advertised rates. they may have minimum deposits of $5k or $10k but if you are certain that you won't need that money for the time period, then they are a nice safe bet. especially since CDs are also guaranteed by the FDIC (under $250k, all rules as usual apply)

Posted by: CG_ups at September 30, 2009 11:16 AM

drama!

Posted by: dirty_hipster at September 30, 2009 11:22 AM

Well, it was you and Snappy who went through all the trouble of composing the ballot and getting us excited, and all of us are very, very grateful for that. Credit always goes to the people there are the finish line, rarely to those who get things started.

Posted by: infinitejester at September 30, 2009 11:22 AM

My money goes liquid in 2011, I will prob bite the bullet and buy then.

Cobble, Hi!

I am sick as a dog but I need to put in my 5 cents. Anyhoo, as Lech pointed out to me when I went ape shit on some moron for anti-semitic remarks, it's totally not worth it cause it's just some troll.

Why would you cut out a fun event that you guys had planned for some stupid troll(s) that came in? You know that PLUSAs argue all the time but then we have such great time at the events and there is a lot to talk about the following day.

Posted by: Kensingtonian at September 30, 2009 11:24 AM

We may still post the results of the ballots! That was fun, thanks for voting.

Posted by: cobblehiller at September 30, 2009 11:25 AM

C-hiller---c'mon! Don't drop a bomb like that and then disappear. I guarantee you we can have a party where reasonable, appreciative people show up and thank you and Snaps for your hard work. I am pissed about all the dumb crap people have been tossing around. Lets get it together folks.

Posted by: wasder at September 30, 2009 11:26 AM

DIBS / CG_ups,

I've been hearing some co-workers griping that the current 35% (or so) tax rate would/could balloon to 50% by time they're eligible to withdraw from 401k and such a spike would eliminate a ton of the deferral benefits. The basis for their thinking is someone has to pay for the massive ballooning deficits and that someone is us. I don't have an opinion on it yet as I'm still chewing on it

Posted by: more4less at September 30, 2009 11:26 AM

I'm here wasder. There will be other events in the future. Just not this one.

I know people liked the idea, not feeling unappreciated! : )

Posted by: cobblehiller at September 30, 2009 11:29 AM

m4l, I think that's the thinking of the lunatic fringe. Even I, as a republican, do not believe such an outcome is likely under the democrats.

Besides, by the time you retire the Republicans will be back to lower rates again.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at September 30, 2009 11:29 AM

m4l, the thing is (read my posts closely, i put thought into them!!! heheh) that you will be in a lower tax bracket bc you will have a much lower income (presumably) post-retirement. so EXAMPLE ONLY, i don't know your tax bracket, but if you're currently in 33% bucket making $ABC / year, you may be making $ABC minus $50,000 / year, putting you in today's $18% bucket (just example numbers to make it easier to understand). so even if all the rates get jacked up, today's 18% bucket would have to exceed 33% at retirement. what i think we're saying is that is a HUGE jump.

Posted by: CG_ups at September 30, 2009 11:31 AM

dh, what rate are you earning on the CD????

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at September 30, 2009 11:31 AM

Dave - it was an 18 mo @ 5.25%

Posted by: dirty_hipster at September 30, 2009 11:33 AM

Right on. cobble--check and then disregard your email then... (seriously--hate to play that game again)

'08 rise in NYC rich club

By ANDY SOLTIS

Posted: 2:47 AM, September 30, 2009

Just before the economy tanked, New York's rich got richer.

More than 43,000 city households last year joined the wealth club of those earning $200,000 annually or more, according to new US Census figures.

The jump was part of a rapidly growing income gap across the country that saw middle- and low-income families get pinched more by the recession.

In Manhattan, the number of households with incomes below $10,000 a year rose by 529 in 2008 -- while those in the $200,000-a-year class shot up by more than 19,000.

Other boroughs also saw a spike in the wealthiest households: an increase of more than 6,000 in Brooklyn, 5,300 in Queens, 1,500 in The Bronx and 1,400 on Staten Island.

In contrast, the average US household had an income of $50,303 last year, the lowest level in 12 years, and down from $52,163 in 2007.

"No one should be surprised at the increased disparity," said Richard Freeman, a Harvard University economist. "Unemployment hurts normal workers who do not have the golden parachutes the folks at the top have."

Posted by: 11217 at September 30, 2009 11:35 AM

dh - you can probably do around as good with shorter duration. i like to keep CDs a year or shorter. the nice thing is that you can totally shop for CDs. i think there are some websites that actually post rates for all the companies? maybe bankrate dot com or something like that. i should practice what i preach, i just roll mine over with chase.

Posted by: CG_ups at September 30, 2009 11:36 AM

It will be difficult to get that return without taking risk in some equities. There are a lot out there that yield 5% or more but you'll have to know what you're buying and be OK with volatility.

On my yield side, I own:

TSM 4.15%
CHT 5.87%
PHI 6.41%
PGH 10.68%
so 5.52%

There is no guarantee of pricipal stability with these names. 30 Year treasuries are at 4%.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at September 30, 2009 11:39 AM

just to throw into yield list, at&t (T) still has 6%+ yields.

Posted by: more4less at September 30, 2009 11:50 AM

Oh, no, cobble. So sorry this blog has taken a toll. I'm disappointed and was looking forward to the evening. But you don't owe it to anyone here to do something your heart isn't into.

I'm in the park so don't have access to all my stuff but from memory some yields are good on
VZ
MRK
STD
some of the MLPs

I figured the crash would be good for value investing so I've been chasing yields as well. Was a bit early but doing ok now.

I don't recall if it was Graham & Dodd who said 'one shoyld only by a stock to receive a dividend or in the expectaion of doing so'

Posted by: denton at September 30, 2009 12:26 PM

Thanks also Denton (plus Mrs. D), CG_ups, jester, DeLepp and all others who will still show to The End of The World Party (Redux).

I'll do some promotion as we get close.

Please see the information I just posted in the thread about this week's biggest sales. It's the data you've been requesting for some time on the condo market, and it is based on ACTUAL sales data in my condo complex. The bottom line? A 6% drop from the peak sales price. I want to see how folks are going to spin this. Miss Muffet? DIBS? Jackal??? Where are you????

Posted by: Butterfly at September 30, 2009 1:00 PM

OK....thanks to THL, we have a new T-shirt slogan for Oct 15.

"Don't Let Ugly Win"

Not as interesting as "One Swallow Does Not A Summer Make" but still catchy I think.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at September 30, 2009 1:02 PM

Biff, I would like to attend too. But given how I somehow missed the last 2 after me saying I'll be there, I won't ofter empty promises

Posted by: CG_ups at September 30, 2009 1:02 PM

rob--hate to say it but you really have to read Monday's OT to understand. And even then it won't make complete sense. Somebody made up a log in name and shat all over the OT members.

No one is answering because it's long and convoluted. You'd have to read Monday's OT combined with What's OT's.

Cobble, Snappy, I second slopefarm, wasder, DIBS and THL. It would be like the Whos canceling Christmas because the Grinch made off with their gifts and decorations.

I've been busy today and have to run. I just scanned the OT and realized what is going on.

Cobble/Snaps: please don't do this!! THL is so right: don't reward those who behave boorishly and devisively. You are both well-loved by many folks on this site, myself included. In fact,I'll go further and say that the two of you always strike me as among the most cheerful and fun. You two, along with a few others have been instrumental in building up this "PLUSA" thing we have here.

Don't reward the wrong people. Please, please, please reconsider.

Posted by: benson at September 30, 2009 1:32 PM

Great Nora clip, dibs! Looks as if she's going to have kittens, though.
I agree w/ what everyone says about not letting the uglies win but if Snaps & Cobble feel uncomfortable about it, it's those sensibilities that make them the people we admire.

And there is hope for us all - more posts about the mail box than about the bikes!

Posted by: Arkady at September 30, 2009 1:37 PM

"Don't reward the wrong people. Please, please, please reconsider."

"Somebody made up a log in name and shat all over the OT members."

"Don't Let Ugly Win"

It's officially a schism. Cliques have formed. Predictable.

heh. ENY, very true. histrionics are contagious.

Posted by: CG_ups at September 30, 2009 1:43 PM

let me further add...

To those who are continuing to engage in back room nastiness, plans for retribution, snide comments one way or the other, etc. are only serving to widen the 'PLUSA rift' and really makes you no better than those who initially engaged in the inappropriate behavior.

Can we all just get a grip, return our school uniforms, wipe the slate clean and go back to being semi-mature adults?

I mean, we could give it a shot right?

Posted by: TownhouseLady at September 30, 2009 1:43 PM

Posted by: CG_ups at September 30, 2009 1:46 PM

Might this be lechacal's first cat reference???

From the What's OT where we are having a discussion about going to strip clubs..

"I'll go ahead and field that one for the audience. Basically a lap dance in NYC means you don't get to touch them (otherwise the guy in the corner who does steroids will come fuck you up) but they kind of dance around / up against you for 2 minutes. It's kind of dumb when you really think about it, and in a lot of ways it's just a way to waste twenty bucks really fast, but they do make enough contact with you to leave you smelling like stripper. In a way it's kind of a question of who's touching whom. But in any event there isn't any touchy-touchy, it's more just suggestive rubby-rubby, like a cat that rubs up against your leg but it's a stripper."

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at September 30, 2009 1:46 PM

I agree, THL.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at September 30, 2009 1:47 PM

so ... much ... grease ...

Posted by: CG_ups at September 30, 2009 1:59 PM

Yesterday was one of the worst days I have ever had in recent memory.

I need help.

The short story: 48 hours before I'm scheduled to fly to Hong Kong (and before a very nice LA academic is due to move to my apartment for 4 month) I am awakened to find a bug on my white duvet cover. I smack the bug, and-OMG!-- blood bursts across the mattress.

I spend the next several hours in a frenzy, tearing apart my bedroom, the bed, the frame the bedding. I don't find anything but I do see one more dead bedbug on the floor. So I call the subtenant, call an exterminator, and begin packing up all my clothes, drying them at 140 degree heat, and sealing them in plastic bags in preparation.

Today some good news: the exterminator couldn't find signs of infestation. I'm going to do the exterminate anyway, of course. They need to do it twice, spaced at least 10 days apart. I postponed my departure by two weeks. I'm dealing with this part, as awful as it is.

But my poor subtenant--who still wants to stay here--has no place to sleep (she has an office in Manhattan).

So my question: do any of you guys know of someone who has a spare room to rent from now until October 15th to a really nice 50-something writer and academic from LA?

Thanks.

Posted by: WonTon at September 30, 2009 2:01 PM

omg, what a nightmare wonton! good thing you caught it before it got widespread. sounds like you might have nipped things in the bud. i dunno about any sublets but craigslist is usually pretty good for that sort of thing i think.

"So my question: do any of you guys know of someone who has a spare room to rent from now until October 15th to a really nice 50-something writer and academic from LA?"

No way - you have bedbugs. ;)

Posted by: dirty_hipster at September 30, 2009 2:05 PM

Awful, WonTon. There's a service called VRBO that has short-term rentals that's supposedly very good. I've had friends who've used it.

Neat clip, Dibs! Have you seen those crocheted balls anywhere? They used to be all over but I haven't been able to find any in the last 2 years.

well that public auction of props (I think mentioned on brownstoners this weed) - has a minimum bid for a carriage house on Hicks for $2m.....guess what - was owned by that same old guy. Who has died, no will, etc and thats why being auctioned off.
Interesting old coots out there.

Folks;

I'm back for a second. I want to make one more comment, in response to ENY's post about schisms and my statement: "Don't reward the wrong people". Let me be clear about what I meant with that statement:

-I do not consider myself part of any clique or schism, nor am I trying to promote any such thing.

-I would be happy if all folks returned to the OT,including those who decided to decamp to the What's blog.

-So, let me be clear by exactly what I meant by "wrong people": it is those people who decided to hide behind an anonymous log-in name and call Brighton and Bitter ugly, and also those on the What's blog who posted that some women on this OT need to get laid and other such vile stuff. I do not know for a fact who pulled these stunts. I do know that it was disgusting behavior, and I once again appeal to Cobble and Snappy not to reward it by cancelling an event whereby people from different walks of life get together for a few hours, have some laughs, socialize, and learn a few things.

Posted by: benson at September 30, 2009 3:14 PM

CG_ups, I give you. that was my "build it and they'll come" attempt you suggested I try. in the past, throw out some hate and there would be a spike in post count. guess people are really gone. oh well, guess it's time to hang out and meet some new friends on curbed.com

Posted by: more4less at September 30, 2009 3:19 PM

You can't meet actual friends on curbed.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at September 30, 2009 3:22 PM

"those on the What's blog who posted that some women on this OT need to get laid and other such vile stuff."

this i didn't see. this is a much more plausible explanation for why Cobblesnaps is off. one would think that enough time has been spent together digitally and in real life that we could resort from devolving into a highschool pissing match, but I guess its human nature.

Posted by: wasder at September 30, 2009 3:24 PM

It's pretty much me, lechcal and the two girls over on What's blog with a few additional new posters and one that looks/acts like Another Lurker; which is odd.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at September 30, 2009 3:31 PM

I find it hard to believe that any of the regular group is responsible for all that venom - certainly, no one who has come to the get-togethers. One thing I've liked about our gatherings is the idea that we're not hunched over keyboards & out of touch w/ human contact - I imagine we're unique as far as blog-ship goes & it's a shame if that ends.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at September 30, 2009 3:47 PM

rob, you crack me up with the 401k stuff... as usual.

The first question to ask, is your employer doing a 'match'. That is, many will 'match' what you put in up to 6% or so of your salary. You put in a hundred bucks, they put in a hundred bucks. Get it? It's like with every forty, you get one free. Why would you not take a free forty?

Second, even if you THINK they are taking a grand a month, or whatever, from your salary, you are not actually PAYING a grand a month. That is, because you are reducing your taxable salary by that amount and so you will not be paying any taxes on that grand!

Unlike what someone said above, it is highly unlikely that you will be able to short, buy gold stocks, or anything like that. That is so when people like you do exactly that and get killed, you will not be able to sue your employer. They do have enuf options to participate in domestic equities, overseas equities, or no equities at all. Alot of them are now offering those stupid 'target date' funds.

I do recall dibs offering to sit down with you and go over your options, so wtf?

Posted by: denton at September 30, 2009 3:47 PM

11217--if you google asshat hill you will find it.

NEW RULE FOR THE OT...which I think may bring a lot of people back....

No more talk about "check your email."

I think this got tedious, on people's nerves and wound people up.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at September 30, 2009 3:50 PM

since OT is now just the usual bs, let me ask a real estate question. anyone know what's the down paymt % for a 4, 6, and 8 family unit bldg? am asking cause I find these multi-family bldg look like relative bargains to the 1, 2, & 3 family units bldgs

Posted by: more4less at September 30, 2009 3:51 PM

ha denton. well my employer doesn't match our 401k contributions. and i only contribute 1 or 2% of my check to 401k anyway, not sure which one it is. so it really is a miniscule amount to begin with.

I don't know who or what has upset you, because I've been busy, as well as not really reading the OT lately. I just scroll past endless bon mots by the same people until I see something that interests me, sorry guys, but I do. However, Cobble and Snaps are among my favorite people, and I hate to think some small minded, pseudo witty person or people have upset you. Don't let them win! You know who your real friends here are. I am amazed and pleased at the real friends I have made from this site, and I consider both of you friends, as to many others. (Virtual hug)

DIBS, proposing & enforcing rules on OT is mission impossible and too BIG BROTHER. People should follow Rob's attitude for this crap:
- fight when you want to
- fight when attacked
- speak your piece when you want to
- tomorrow is a new day; not to forget stuff but dont put bad memories on 24/7 recall

if the small fire is too hot to handle, then you aint got what it takes to hang here and hang somewhere you're more comfortable with.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at September 30, 2009 4:15 PM

I am depressed today because my company has decided to shift some manufacturing from a plant in Indiana to one in Mexico. The manufacturing in question is for the automotive sector.

I've been to the plant a number of times - it is in the southern rural part of Indiana. In fact, to get to it,you have to fly into Lousville. It is a slice of Middle America, and I mean that in a good way. Folks work at the factory, and it provides enough to buy a modest home with a small boat in the driveway for fishing on the weekend - and that is fine with them. People with no pretensions - just good plain folk.

I am beside myself these days in watching all the business sectors related to engineering slipping away. Of course that's self-serving, but there is more to it than that. This morning I had to drive to work, which I rarely do. As I was driving up 4th Ave, I noticed that the construction site on 4th Ave and Baltic is active again -swarming with hardhats. Big, burly guys doing a job. Perhaps I'm strange, but such a sight makes me feel good. The problem is that it is happening less and less.

Sorry I've been away all week.

Did I miss anything?

That is a downer, Benson. (And I liked your earlier remarks about the thread too.)

"I am depressed today because my company has decided to shift some manufacturing from a plant in Indiana to one in Mexico."

DIBS, why don't you apply for the Foreman's position?

Posted by: Biff Champion at September 30, 2009 4:20 PM

"DIBS, check your email for my thoughts on the matter."

LOL

"Forgive me, that comment was inappropriate."

I thought it was funny. Also, as PLUSA President, shouldn't Biff be making the rules? Mr. President?

Posted by: East New York at September 30, 2009 4:25 PM

What's the position???

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at September 30, 2009 4:25 PM

No rules, just use common courtesy.

Posted by: TownhouseLady at September 30, 2009 4:27 PM

"No rules, just use common courtesy."

Elegant, and to the point.

Posted by: benson at September 30, 2009 4:30 PM

"What's the position???"

Not sure, but if it involves four men who are mexican, I'm sure you'll be interested.

"as PLUSA President, shouldn't Biff be making the rules? Mr. President?"

There are rules for punctuation and grammar, which should be followed.

Arkady - I've attempted to get shad roe to eat on a number of occasions - never pulled it off. I've had shad itself though which is just too boney for the effort.

Posted by: dittoburg at September 30, 2009 4:40 PM

Shad roe has a very specific season - in the spring for a very short time. As stated above, it's not a fave of mine but my motehr & brother loved it. Sauteed in butter. No good at all if not really fresh.

Posted by: Arkady at September 30, 2009 4:44 PM

Yoicks! Mother.

Posted by: Arkady at September 30, 2009 4:45 PM

I never had shad roe, although I have lived on skid row.

Posted by: Biff Champion at September 30, 2009 4:45 PM

What a good president, Biffy! Bringing it all back to real estate.

Posted by: Arkady at September 30, 2009 4:47 PM

Thanks Arkady, but on Brownstoner I should be discussing row houses as opposed to skid row.

Posted by: Biff Champion at September 30, 2009 4:48 PM

Trademark violation going on over at Asshat Hill. That bitch stole my [wink].

Posted by: Sarah Palin at September 30, 2009 4:49 PM

Get over there and defend yourself, one bitch to another.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at September 30, 2009 4:50 PM

The question is: is it "contextual" shad roe? Hope so, so that it gets Mr.B's thumbs up!

Posted by: benson at September 30, 2009 4:51 PM

So go complain about it over there. Why are you carrying it back over here?

Posted by: TownhouseLady at September 30, 2009 4:51 PM

Arkady - I know, when the Shad are running up the Hudson - my luck has been the places have sold out by the time I get there...

Posted by: dittoburg at September 30, 2009 4:52 PM

I'm sure the [wink] was ghost-written anyway, just like your forthcoming books. No big violation there. (There, that ought to get lechacal back here where he belongs.)

Posted by: slopefarm at September 30, 2009 4:52 PM

slope, come on. You don't think Sarah palin wrote those 400 pages?????

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at September 30, 2009 4:56 PM

they cancelled shad roe fest this past spring. 'cause not enough shad anymore.

I remember smelt season on Lake michigan when i lived in CHicago.....fried smelts...yuuuummmmmm

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at September 30, 2009 5:06 PM

M4L;

I just saw your question above regarding mortgages.

Here is the general rule:

Homes that are 1-3 family are considered "private",and fannie mae and freddie mac will buy their mortgage on the secondary market. The down payment required varies from 10 to 20%, depending on your credit score.

Homes that are 4 families or more are considered commercial/investment. Mortgages on these homes are not underwritten by Freddie or Fannie, and are thus more strict. Usually 30% down is required, and the interest rate is usually 0.5% higher than that of conventional single-family home mortgages.

Posted by: benson at September 30, 2009 5:09 PM

Funny DIBS. The papers were full of quotes yesterday from sources close to Palin talking about how hands on she was, how these are her real words, etc. No one was willing to come out and say she wrote the thing, but they tried to imply it without lying. Sounded like a bunch of realtors.

happy to play along if it gets lechacal (and Palin's wink) back.

DIBS, can one get fried smelts in NYC?

Posted by: Biff Champion at September 30, 2009 5:11 PM

A politician who uses a ghost writer. I'm shocked, SHOCKED,I tell ya.

Slopefarm, you do remember that when Hillary Clinton wrote her puff piece "It Takes a Village", she didn't have the courtesy to acknowledge her ghost writer on the cover page?

MWA HA HA HA!

Posted by: benson at September 30, 2009 5:15 PM

I've smelt fries in NYC.

Posted by: Arkady at September 30, 2009 5:16 PM

Biff, I haven't seen them. I get them at Sansome Street Oyster house in Philly.

Looks like I got pulled over by the punctuation beoch, er, I mean police.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at September 30, 2009 5:17 PM

I've fried tuna melts.

Posted by: Biff Champion at September 30, 2009 5:19 PM

Dibs - I didn't see any comment about your punctuation by the police - looks like a self-inflicted wound to me.

Posted by: Arkady at September 30, 2009 5:20 PM

MWA HA HA HA!

Posted by: benson at September 30, 2009 5:15 PM

Somehow MWAHAHAHAH coming out of your mouth seems uncharacteristic.

And that was a compliment.

OK...it's down in the subway for me, emerging in the ghetto in 35 minutes

Bye Bye

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at September 30, 2009 5:21 PM

Oh yes, benson, very funny, lots of pols do it. Pointless to engage in a Dem v. Rep. battle over whose books were ghostwritten. What I love, however, is the spin in Palin's case. There's no need to imply that Hillary wrote her book. She obviously could ahve if she wanted to, she was just too entitled/busy/lazy/arrogant/name your adjective. The reason people cared about Hillary not naming the gw is it revealed her arrogance, not stupidity, because whatever things people think about Hillary, they don't question her intellect.

The spin now is all about implying that, whatever's in those 400 pages, Sarah Palin could have written it herself, because there are inevitable doubts. To the extent the book is about burnishing her credentials, it fails if no one but true believers believes it is her book. You watch -- all the spin is going to be about trying to imply how much this book is really hers and reflects her writing, her intellect, her ideas, etc.

Posted by: slopefarm at September 30, 2009 5:25 PM

We'll know if she wrote it by the 'Gosh' and 'Golly' count. You have to assume the editors couldn't have caught and deleted all of them.

Posted by: TownhouseLady at September 30, 2009 5:29 PM

Slopefarm;

OK, I understand your point, but let me make a follow-up comment. Just as there are "true believers", there are also "true unbelievers". Somehow I think that no matter what Sarah Palin did here, including having a 3rd party witness her writing the book, would have convinced the True Unbelievers that it was her baby. She's just one of those polarizing figures (like Bill Clinton and "W").

Posted by: benson at September 30, 2009 5:31 PM

benson, really sucks what is going on. I am really fearful for the future of this country, for the first time ever.

Anyway, you're in engineering, not mfg. Someone still has to design the sh*t.

What I really effin' hate is when I get some new sh*t in that used to be made somewhere in the US, now it says made in Mexico or China. Happened to me last week. So I call up the mfgr and say, how come it's the same price? Then you get some blathering bs about the need to 'be competitive'. But the big companies are sucking up the money and not even letting the little guys getting a taste of what they save sending it offshore.

A few months ago I got blindsided like that by another American mfgr, you'd immediately recognize the name. I only noticed cuz the Mexican factory left some production slip in the box in Spanish. I called them up and told them we found a tequila bottle in the box. Assholes!

Posted by: denton at September 30, 2009 5:34 PM

THL, we can add, "Ya know" and "Darn" to that list.

Posted by: Biff Champion at September 30, 2009 5:35 PM

True!

Very few people these days write their own books. Particularly politicians. So even if she did 'write it' I'm sure she had plenty of oversight.

Posted by: TownhouseLady at September 30, 2009 5:37 PM

I just came out from long mtg where I have constant thought bouncing in my head "boy, am I surrounded by idiots (or numb nuts)"

Posted by: more4less at September 30, 2009 5:38 PM

CG_ups, I immigrant. not child genius like you. unappropriate, inappropriate - they look close enough to me

Posted by: more4less at September 30, 2009 5:39 PM

Benson and Denton I was watching the show Shark Tank last night. Don't really love the show but, what I did love was this one guy who came on. He'd developed a wheat free (for kids with allergies) version of Play Doh.

Play Doh was trying to buy the patent from him. One of the Sharks was trying to get him to do a deal with him and give away 51% of the company so that he could negotiate with Play Doh on his behalf.

Loved the guy. He would ONLY agree if the Shark made sure that it would bring jobs to his community. He wanted it to be manufactured in his town (I think somewhere in Indiana or Nebraska- I remember him standing in a corn field).

That guy made me so happy.

Posted by: TownhouseLady at September 30, 2009 5:42 PM

M4L- So I'm not an immigrant what's my excuse? Public schooling?

Posted by: TownhouseLady at September 30, 2009 5:45 PM

THL, blame the immigrants - it's a very convenient excuse

Posted by: more4less at September 30, 2009 5:50 PM

I agree, benson. The figures are polarizing and the public is polarized. People on both sides are unreceptive to contrary facts and unable to accept that their own opinions are not necessarily facts or the only way of looking at things. As for me, I'd probably need a video of Palin typing away, and the video needs to show the screen. ;)

Meanwhile, I join you and denton in bemoaning the loss of mfg jobs. The labor-oriented view is this is why we need protectionism. The right's view is this is why we need to reduce taxes, regulations and wage requirements. It's an awful choice -- wall off Mexico, become Mexico or let the jobs go. No easy answers.

Posted by: slopefarm at September 30, 2009 5:53 PM

later peeps. till tomorrow.

You know I follow Nascar and there was this big Brouhaha when they allowed Toyota in. Previous to that it had always been the big US automakers. so it got everyone's dander up.

Thing is my dad pointed out to me that while everyone was getting their knickers in a twist about that Ford moved one of their biggest manuf. plants to Mexico. Meanwhile Toyota operates several throughout the US. Texas, Miss, Alabama, Kentucky, W. VA.

that's right thl, it's not about the name on the front, it's about where it was built and by whom. I'm glad there's a '% domestic content' section on window stickers these days.

Something to lighten the mood.

A Blonde drops off a shirt at the cleaners.

The Asian lady behind the counter thanks her, and says
"Come Again".

The Blonde says
"No, it's toothpaste this time you nosy b*tch"

Have a good night all. Let's keep the mood happy tomorrow.

Posted by: brownjokester at September 30, 2009 6:27 PM

brownjokester, why does the joke have to perpetuate the stereotype that only Asians work at cleaners? That is VERY racist.

Posted by: Biff Champion at September 30, 2009 6:30 PM

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
AND I AM TOTALLY KIDDING! :-)
It was a good joke.
