[Slowly opens door] [Searches for friendly faces] [Takes cover under pool table just in case]
It was just another slow Jewish holiday on the OT . . .

Happy thoughts today???

BTW, the new OT over on asshathill is posted at 8:30, effectively superceding brownstoner.

Is it STILL Jewish holidays???
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at September 29, 2009 9:17 AM
Mornin' dave! For the really religious, there seems to be a Jewish holiday every day. For the rest of us, it ended with the break fast last night. (I was merely referring back to the "quiet" day on the OT everyone was predicting for Yom Kippur yesterday)

DIBS. Did you see Case Shiller up 1.2%? Only 2 out of 20 metro areas had declines nationwide. Where is your friend B-Stones Half Off?
Posted by: Adam Dahill at September 29, 2009 9:23 AM
Safe yet? I'm away until tomorrow night so I want you guys to play nice. (protected by hazmat suit). C Gar- I expect you to watch the other kids today :-)
Posted by: bxgrl at September 29, 2009 9:26 AM
Adam, LOL, I was just about to post Case Schiller. I am very confident of my prediction that brownstone prices will have bottomed by the end of the year. Maybe they have already, 418 Macon Street foreclosure notwithstanding.

Adam, come drink with us at Union Hall on 10/16.

CGar, I'm just walking softly and carrying a big stick. Looks like I have more than one enemy here...
Did anyone see this on What's OT yesterday?
"Some of them have no life, yet some of them want you to return so they can keep up the same hostility (especially one woman)."
Gee, I wonder who 'they're' talking about. Wait, don't answer that.

Bitter and I thought we would take this moment on "The Day After" to tell those of you who have become strangely, awkwardly and inappropriately important to us over the last 6 weeks or so just how we feel (not particularly in ANY order, lest someone's knickers get in a twist):
- You can't spell Biff without "BFF"
- Lech, you are an Officer and a Gentleman
- Dirty, WE LOVE YOU MAN!
- DIBS, if you weren't gay, and we did this sort of thing, we'd totally have a 3-some with you
- Jessi, you put the "babe" in Baby
- DeLepp, we wish you were conjoined with us
- CG_FedEx, you really deliver, grrl
- Kens, yes, your accent IS sexy
We know that if we were chained to a cinder block on a chair in an elevator in the middle of the night, any and/or all of you would immediately jump to our aid, rescue and amusement, and for that we thank you profoundly and profusely, from the bottom of our hearts. Here's to the next 6 weeks!
That's all.

I know I've be absent lately. Trying to post more, but so bogged down in a ton of stuff. Switched firms, and then the new firm just moved offices, I'm renovating my bathroom, planning a wedding with the Mrs, been out of town every weekend since May, etc... Looking forward to the Fall.
Is the what gone for good? Does he spend all his time on his own blog now?

2) Has become awkwardly important to us
3) Has become inappropriately important to us
4) 1) and 3) but not 2)
5) All of the above

I think Steve Martin once said it best regarding married men and affairs, something akin to:
-Men believe that the physical act is the heart of an affair, whereas what really destroys the wife is the emotional attachment to another woman.
I believe that he is 100% correct.
Posted by: benson at September 29, 2009 10:22 AM
Oh, it's definitely emotional cheating for PLUSAs to go and have a substantive discussion about the real estate market on the open thread on what's blog. It may even be cheating cheating.
Posted by: slopefarm at September 29, 2009 10:22 AM
I agree with the Steve Martin comment. The other overriding factor is just make sure they don't know. Don't get caught, and FOR GOD'S SAKE don't have some guilt ridden emotional moment and ever confess.

FYI....
Sex Drive Boosted by Testosterone Spray, Study Finds
Sept. 29 (Bloomberg) -- Men with low sex drive because of decreased amounts of testosterone may someday find help as easy as applying an underarm spray.
The spray, called Axiron, restored levels of the hormone to normal in 84 percent of testosterone-deficient men after four months, its developer Acrux Ltd., said in a statement today. The Melbourne-based company said it will seek approval this year from the Food and Drug Administration to sell Axiron in the U.S., the world’s largest pharmaceuticals market.
More than a third of American men over 45 years suffer
testosterone deficiency, U.S. researchers found in a 2006 study. It can sap sex drive and cause impotence, osteoporosis and memory loss, according to the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota.

THL once said that many women allow gay guys to cop a free feel. I think there is market in the making here. Just like underage kids buy false driving licences so that they can drink, I think that straight guys would pay a hefty fee for a false "Gay Card".

Delepp--awesome that you are reading Norwegian Wood. There is such a sense of longing in that book. And also all of the descriptions of food etc made me want to go to JApan. When I finally made it to Kyoto I felt like I was home in a way.
Move on to Wild Sheep Chase and Dance Dance Dance (can't remember which comes first in the order--they are a pair).

if you are jonesing for noodles like real japanese style, go to ippudo ALONE (very important) and sit at the countertop (no wait). get the akamaru(?) broth - the cloudy rich one. heavenly.

ah no biff, that is hibino. ippudo is on 4th ave and around 10th street in manhattan. but be warned, it is a shitshow wait no matter what time you go. go alone, order the pork buns, a bowl of noodles, and an asahi. you will be in heaven. mmmm. wish i worked near there. i would hit that so hard.
Posted by: CG_ups at September 29, 2009 11:16 AM
Hibino is pretty good but never any Toro if you're in a sushi mood and that is just pure lame.
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at September 29, 2009 11:17 AM
Tampopo came to usa the same year as babette's feast I think, another great foodie movie.
Posted by: DeLepp at September 29, 2009 11:19 AM
DIBS - better that they only have it when they can get it fresh / high quality than substandard flash frozen shit though, ya know?
Posted by: CG_ups at September 29, 2009 11:19 AM
Lets not forget Eat Drink Man Woman, another great "food" movie.
Posted by: Biff Champion at September 29, 2009 11:24 AM
Toro pretty much always has to be fresh. It deteriorates when frozen. It's just that Brooklynians are cheap and won't often pony up for the Toro and they get stuck with it. Yamato and a few others always have it. All Japanese restaurants in Manhattan carry it.
And, they can ALWAYS get it fresh. They gave me a lame, typical Japanese, excuse for why they didn't have it. Something like they couldn't get it delivered. I guess Brooklyn IS too far from manhattan.
Otherwise, Hibino was very good.

wasder - live shrimp flopping around in the bowl on the tummy. eggs were involved at some point, but that is the really memorable bit :)

You forgot "Ratatouille", also a great food movie.

Nope - didn't see it. The owner never contacted me. :(

I would have loved to be a guest at that dinner Hannibal had where he cooked the bad flutists sweetbreads. What a lovely room. I'm sure the dinner and the paired wines were exceptional and, I love sweetbreads.

I was secretly hoping (ok, maybe not so secretly) that you might become a sloper.

Wine lover would read me the riot act.
Honestly though - rents in Williamsburg are asinine right now. Studios are non-existant and the 1 bedrooms (2 bedrooms railroads) are hovering around 2,000
All the failed condos turned rentals want 2600 for a one bedroom - no thanks!!

DH;
Really??
My daughter just moved into a 2 bedroom in Greenwood Heights (not far from Ellis) for $1700/month. Moreover, while the building is old, her apartment is brand-spanking new. I mean everything: kitchen, bathroom, wiring, walls, etc. Lots of young people in the building.
Even better, she got the apartment through Rapid Realty, which charges the landlord the brokerage fee.

I like Greenwood Heights alot Benson - I guess at this point I'm just feeling things out, and being very selective with where I'm looking, as I'd prefer not to have a longer commute than I do now.
I thought rents in Brooklyn were supposed to be plummeting!! What happened?!

:-)
Posted by: Biff Champion at September 29, 2009 1:59 PM
hmmm, been to char no 4 a bunch of times. smoked meats are always a safe bet. great brisket, ham, ribs, etc. good shrimp and grits. nothing too out there, simpler is better. their pancakes are surprisingly good, though no place has better pancakes than cafe luluc. holy moley. hmmm. the salted pecan caramel icecream thingy is pretty good. the bloody marys are excellent. hella spicy! hmmm. only disappointments have been the brisket hash at lunch and maybe the prix fixe ginormous brekkie is a wee quantity over quality but generally i like it.

Rye is mad expensive. Have never gotten outta there for less than 150 bucks for 2.

Snappy said late yesterday that she was taking a few day's break from the OT, after yesterday's melt-down. Snappy really takes these things to heart. She doesn't like to see folks fighting.
I think some of the comments on yesterday's Asshat OT about the women regulars on the Brownstoner OT got her and others very upset too.

"New office? Biff was there a promotion over at the Death Star?"
THL, no, it's more like winning Survival. I got the office by default, or by the fact others were let go. Turns out that after they gave so many their walking papers, they realized they went overboard when people recently started leaving voluntarily, including my old boss Darth. Now MoTU (Master of the Universe) is my new boss and, to appease the remaining Jedis, is offering perks, including asking me to move to a much nicer office than the one I've had for a few years now.

"and why is any of that irrelevant? why bring personal information about me from OT into a thread like this? jeez you can be vile sometimes."
Yes, Rob. SO much different then you doing the exact opposite and bringing your rants in here. I can't for the life of me understand why people on this board pay you any attention. You fill up the threads with your rants about bed bugs and other misinformed crap and then need someone to hold your hand to even get you to the most basic of meet up spots because you don't actually know much of anything about anything more than 5 blocks away from you, much less Brooklyn. Idiocy at its finest.
The way people on here coddle to you is exactly why people like Paris Hilton and Lindsay Lohan get so much attention.
LOWEST COMMON DENOMINATOR.
It's sad really that so few people on this board protect ignorance.

still, im sure even on their worst bad hair days Lindsay and Paris' hair has to look better than a long blonde brooklyn wig, no? i could be wrong tho.

See the Hotel over the highline park in the meatpacking district.
it's a regular strip show there every night.

Infinitejester:
Please see Rob's comment at 3:43 for the source of my frustration.
I know not everyone understands this, but I primarily read this website for the content and not to make friends or join a chat room.
So when I'm unable to make comments without the leader of the chat room chiming in about me being a "snotbag" or "the right lighting for my long blonde wig," you'll have to excuse the fact that I'm once again on the verge of committing brownstoner blogicide.
Where I once couldn't wait to come to read Brownstoner, it's now become something I'm addicted to, but don't actually much enjoy nearly as much. It's over run with crap. I'll stick to reading and limiting my postings (as I've tried to do lately) but it's really annoying when I make a comment and someone like Rob is all over me for absolutely ridiculous reasons.
Please remember who was recently banned here. I tip Brownstoner to things (stores/restaurants,bjork, etc) so it would be nice if I could comment on this blog without the idiots descending.
Too much to ask?

they have to wear wigs I hear.

to be honest, the wig jokes are getting old. i was about to post something and saw 11217's post. to be honest, i can see why both of you don't like each other, but you both deserve to post freely without being jumped on (unless truly provoked). lay off the low blows and just let it be.
Posted by: CG_ups at September 29, 2009 3:55 PM
11217- The thing is you sink to his level in a nanosecond. You jab back fast and nasty. So If you want him to stop maybe you need to as well?
What's good for the goose and all that crap...
Posted by: TownhouseLady at September 29, 2009 3:55 PM
"Rob and 11217 need to hug it out."
No, they need to fight it out, the old fashioned way, with the "dukes of hazzard." Best man wins.
In NYC days gone by, the bitter comments 11217 and Rob launched at each other today would invariably result in some mano-a-mano fisticuffs. However thanks to the Web, a person can insult someone else from the comfort of their computer monitor while avoiding the awkward possibility of ever having to encounter that person.
11217 and Rob are like oil and water....Spy vs. Spy...snake vs. mongoose....cat vs. dog....

omg, what a dork am i. to be honest. to be honest. i need a new catchphrase. i agree THL, they both are quick to take it dirty. the thing is, i do think people tend to pile on whomever is on the other side of a rob argument because a lot of people know him and like him, which is a little insdery and unfair to other people on the board. i don't think it is so good for rob either, because if you respect someone, you let them fight their own fights and deal with the consequences of their actions.

11217, not at all. There have been dominant posters here who really turned off the flavor of this blog for me too. I would check the threads and they'd be all over, always commenting, every single post produced a reply from them. It sucked. Somehow, it just switched one day and they no longer bothered me. Also, i've been posting online since 1993 and feel very comfortable with being able to handle things I dislike.
You are one of the posters I really look forward to reading, and I hope you will absolutely not commit blogicide and that the joy of this blog revives for you. The only advice I can offer in a quick brainstorming is the PLUSA gatherings really reset the dynamics. Even if you maintain your policy of anonymity, there are smaller get togethers from the people who find they are fast friends. I hope the PLUSA circle just grows and grows, and that you'll stick around.

Posted by: more4less at September 29, 2009 4:13 PM
These little tiffs are kind of funny to me. They remind me of the after-school fights at 3 PM at George Gershwin JHS in East New York. I'd just stand around and watch, that is, unless someone wanted to fight ME, then I'd have some thinking to do.
But otherwise the fights were all pretty much the same: someone takes a few impressive swings and there's plenty of "drama," but in the end no one gets too badly hurt. In a few days the whole thing is pretty much forgotten.
Posted by: East New York at September 29, 2009 4:13 PM
11217, you're a nut but this whole blog is a bag full of nuts. no worries. i think there have been points where everyone who reads brownstoner including the many lurkers have hated someone on the site at some point. i mean come on, look at the OT the past two days. heh.

ENY;
Your comments remind me of the Honeymooner's shows where Ralph describes his relationship with his mother-in-law (remember - when he is making a record to woo here back).

Crocs shouldn't be worn unless you're a chef or in the healthcare industry. They are uniform shoes, not meant to be a fashion statement (although, they do look kinda cute on little kids).

"i mean come on, look at the OT the past two days. heh"
I'll have to catch up on some light reading later on. I usually miss about 90% of the OT, but sometimes pop in for something here or there.
The funny thing about this whole Rob issue is that I'm fairly certain we'd get along in person. My stoner self would be more than happy to go with the flow, and we'd probably have a few good laughs.
It's just that on here, he manages to push all my buttons, and I'm nearly certain he knows it.
As ENY says...it's all rather funny.

DIBS - i kind of think that it doesn't matter so much though. if people are communicating on a blog, they should be held accountable for what they say there. we all are. sometimes i wonder, why is rob consistently the only one who says things on the blog that offend, aliente or upset people but constantly gets a free pass from everyone?
i know he's much nicer in person, i grant you that. but i truly believe that the way he is treated on this site does him more harm than good. he is a grown man. to treat him otherwise is an insult, no?
Posted by: CG_ups at September 29, 2009 4:28 PM
Thanks guys. I really wasn't reaching for the nice comments about posting, but I appreciate it nonetheless. There are many posters here I enjoy reading and look forward to hearing their thoughts.
I think I'm just going to need to suck it up one of these days and come to a brownstoner gathering so I can clear my name. I'm actually probably not a lot like my blog persona either. I'm MUCH more laid back. Maybe that's why Rob gets me so bad...cause he brings out a persona in me I'm not accustomed to...
And now back to your regularly scheduled cat talk...

CG_ups:
Your post at 4:28 is exactly my point. Rob and I are probably both around the same age I'm guessing and sometimes I'm made out to be a spoiled brat on here (which I am not at all) for working my ass off and buying a place in a neighborhood I love, and Rob is made out to be a superstar on here for hating all those things.
Of course, to each his/her own, but there does come a time when a man needs to be a man.
Posted by: 11217 at September 29, 2009 4:34 PM
11217,
I hear you, although I also agree with DIBS about rob, he's an ok guy who lets a little too much id hang out online.
Hanging out on the OT has come to feel like living in a sitcom. We all seem to fall into our roles and our entrances, exits and interactions seem almost to follow a script. Like on Cheers, after Norm said something, you always knew more or less what to expect from Cliff etc. Folks are having a lot of fun, but there was more substance, even on the OT, at one time than there is now.
Posted by: slopefarm at September 29, 2009 4:35 PM
the What called,
he said he's still predicting a complete meltdown of the markets for October,
but if that doesn't work, it will be sometime in the future.
also , there will be rain falling sometime in the next month, but not in the Sahara.
There will also be tides coming in along the coast sometime tomorrow.
that about sums it up.
Posted by: Legion at September 29, 2009 4:35 PM
that wasn't substance on the OT,
that was simply an overabundance of irony.
Posted by: Legion at September 29, 2009 4:37 PM

Render unto a blog poster his reputation, and let real life take care of itself.

can someone tell me what the f has been going on for the past few days? why has this turned into a massive brownstoner fight club?
though honestly, i am disappointed to see people attacking each other and stuff. that bums me out. it's really unnecessary to make personal attacks. it's cool to disagree, i mean life is about disagreement. i like stainless steel appliances and other people don't. but don't attack someone personally. i don't get it. doesn't work for me. i'd just like to say for the record, if anyone wants to hate on me and tell me their name, they can say it to me and i'll be okay with that. but maybe some other people might get hurt or offended when it starts to get personal and that is normal too. who wouldn't get hurt? anyway, i dont' know what else to say about that, except i'm confused why it got to the point of being so nasty.

"She's a BLABERMOUTH!! A BLABBERMOUTH!!"
I LOVE that episode, Benson! I lose it every time Norton starts playing the harmoinca to set "a romantic mood" while Ralph is trying to make the record.
To this day the Honeymooners is my favorite 1/2 hour comedy, because it really does depict a Brooklyn (and NYC) of days gone by. Norton even plays stickball with the kids. Reminds me of when I was in college and briefly lived in the Bronx. I taught the neighborhood kids some street games like roly poly, stickball, etc. That was fun.

I recall it was set in Bensonhurst, but on the show many streets referenced, such as Chauncey , are nowhere near Bensonhurst. They are usually Bushwick street names. Jackie Gleason who wrote or co-wrote most of the scripts was born & raised in Bushwick.
Posted by: Crescent Hill at September 29, 2009 5:04 PM
Rob and DIBS;
Whatever you think of their apartment, that was the Brooklyn of yore...Dads who drove buses or worked in the sewer, striving to get ahead....neighbors popping in and out.....kids playing on the street.
There is one tremendously poignant episode called "Young Man With a Horn". At the end of the show, Ralph is dejected because he didn't score highly on the civil service exam, and so will not get his hoped-for promotion. The speech he makes at that point was one heard in many a Brooklyn household back then.
Posted by: benson at September 29, 2009 5:09 PM
The fact that you guys would even TRY to diss Alice Kramden shows what kind of inauthentic, ignorant Brooklyn interlopers you really are. Alice Kramden is a SAINT in this borough, OK? She was here YEARS before you losers, and now that she's not around anymore to defend herself, you trend-sucking weasels try to throw dirt on her name! Jerks! You guys really need to take a long hard look at yourselves and ask "Do I really belong here?"

"The speech he makes at that point was one heard in many a Brooklyn household back then."
Right on the money. Ralph didn't hit the "high note" on the exam, but vowed to keep trying until he did. A couple of posters here could stand to adpot that kind of determination and grit.

I'm voting on the way home. Mark Green is a friend of a friend, and I like the cut of his jib, so I'll be voting his ticket. David Yassky is a sell-out who supported Bloomberg's hijacking of the term-limits law, so he WON'T be getting my vote.

Allow me to brag.
This morning the nonprofit where I sit on the board asked me to go settle a dispute with between them and a neighbor.
When I left, the man looked off into the distance and puffed on his cigarette and said, "This conversation is going a long ways to ending our differences. In fact, I think they are ended."

Honeymooners were set in Bushwich as I recall. OK, now I'm trying to picture Norton in a raccoon hat at the Putting Lot. Strangely, I think he'd fit in. Make a great episode. Catch you tomorrow.

CG - There's always something to bitch about. "If my guy had won blah, blah, blah." "I voted for you why are you (fill in the blank)?"
