I am amazed. Are people like getting civil and nice.
Just wanted to say I think that was great. Arguments stayed to dissing decor and how long it takes to walk to subway.

So a Bed Stuy HOTD Thread is civilized for over 150 comments and Park Slope HOTDs typically deteriorate into name calling and bouts of Neighbourhood Sensitivity Syndrome almost immediately. Interesting.

great! my roommate was the one to figure out the problem. it was the chemicals in the cleaning agent that came with the swiffer wet jet i bought last weekend that caused his eye irritation. my roommate was like, um the last time you bought the first swiffer plain wet mop duke had the same eye problem (this was back in the spring! good memory on his behalf). i googled swiffer wetjet and pet problems and WOW! hundreds of people have written up complaining about their dogs having eye irritation, skin irritation, and even SEIZURES! so i will not be using the chemicals that came with the swiffer stuff anymore. someone said you can use a pliers to open the thingie and put in your own cleaning agent, so ill probably just dump the swiffer chemicals and refill it with maybe vinegar? the thought of cleaning a kitchen floor with vinegar seems pretty skank to me tho, but supposedly it works?

The HOTD was truly great.
Did anyone see the morning’s links about the Westboro protests? They had like 5 people at Brooklyn Tech High and over 100 students gathered to protest them. Ha ha ha. Losers.
Apparently they are not only going to the Park Slope synagogue to protest on Saturday. They are starting there but moving to one on Eastern Parkway and then another one in Cobble Hill. I hope someone kicks their asses at one of these places. I hope they would attempt to target a Russian synagogue on Brighton Beach. They are sure to get destroyed. After the persecution towards Jews in Russia and given that most Eastern Europeans had family members or knew someone who was lost in Holocaust, Russian Jews don't take these things lightly. Imagine my reaction to Crooklyn X 500.
I cracked up at this quote from the article:
Rabbi Bachman said he did not anticipate violence from his congregation, but the NYPD will nonetheless be out in full force.
Phelps-Roper, the Westboro spokeswoman, laughed at the suggestion that Brooklynites would react violently.
“Don’t flatter yourself, Brooklyn,” she said. “We serve the living God. You mess with us, you’ll get double destruction for what you do.”
Posted by: Kensingtonian at September 25, 2009 10:07 AM
CGar, sounds like some woman was paying you to never return to her home. :-)
"Cargar...that means you want to do the horizontal rumba with a prostitute :)"

Re Westboro "church" - God as the ultimate bouncer and enforcer. What utter rot.
I hope no one touches a hair on their stupid heads. People like that thrive on the abuse and well deserved ridicule. It feeds into their sense of righteousness. There's nothing like persecution from the godless heathen to inflate a sense of divine purpose in a godless world. The ultimate dis would be for people to not even look at them, and go about their business, especially the media.
There's nothing here....move along.

Snappy, I respectfully disagree. Racism and bigotism should not be tolerated. What you say above is what people kept on saying about Nazis and Hitler and look where that got em. If Jews and other opposing forces took action early enough, none of it would have happened.

Kens, it should never be tolerated. On that we agree. I just disagree with going down there to actually kick the asses of these Kansans. In such a scenario, they come out looking like the sane ones. Think of how MLK fought against racism without violence. It can be done.
Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at September 25, 2009 10:26 AM

the difference tho ken is that i dont think these freaks even have a leg to stand on in ANY way, with ANYONE for the most part. it's like they are just talking into the wind flapping their ignorant lips, unlike unfortunate injustices of the past that had more a following? i dont know.. i mean i do understand your viewpoint as well. i find the people in the subway stations preaching hate messages with their pamphplets just as bad, but for some reason they get a pass? i dont know why, it's weird. i think the ones in the stations in times square?

The notion of free speech is one of the things that separates us from many of the troubled places around the world, past & present, where hate like this actually gains traction.

the existence of these hate groups is so depressing. it really does make me sick every time i think about them, but i do think that they feed off the attention. their wet dream would be for someone to attack them. then they get to think they're martyrs. they don't deserve to know that you care or take them seriously enough to act. they are miserable cowards and in a just afterlife, they will in fact get what they deserve.
Posted by: CG_ups at September 25, 2009 10:36 AM
I'm not sure Benson.
Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at September 25, 2009 10:36 AM
The report on the protest at Brooklyn Tech said there were only 5 weirdos & they folded their tents & walked away when they saw all the students.
They didn't even get support in whack-o Richmond, VA.
Posted by: Arkady at September 25, 2009 10:37 AM

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at September 25, 2009 10:45 AM
I think Rob is right re Westboro. Just a different scale & seriousness vs outrages in the past. Westboro is nothing bigger than a small bunch of whack jobs and nor is it ever likely to be.
Even in the earliest days the Nazis et al were bigger, and such groups often took care to cloak their real aims by addressing other more widely held concerns.
Posted by: etson at September 25, 2009 10:46 AM
I'm just so encouraged that news of Westboro being there spread virally, and the kids turned up!

The Faggot Foot Long: A big helping of beef with special sauce on a foot long roll
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at September 25, 2009 10:53 AM
Ok, ok...so I think Etson/Rob's point is that the Westboro group won't gain traction because they aren't trying to even put a front of legitimacy. Just wackos. Had they tried, as Nazis did, to appear as more than just hate, then they would be a group to take seriously. Ok. Got it.

Lechacal:
Too funny....a friend of mine is looking to move to the Slope (I know, I know...everyone is sick of hearing about it) but this is good.
So she forwarded me the listing on craiglist from this guy who it seems found such a good deal on a 3 bedroom that he decided to rent it himself and then find 2 roommates. He said it's on Berkeley between 6th and 7th!
It wasn't until an hour later that I realized...hey wait...didn't Lechacal just move out of his 3 bedroom on Berkeley between 6th and 7th and didn't he always say he had a great deal!

Not sure that it constitutes 'a leg to stand on' but early on the Nazis gained support by playing on legitimate and more widely held grievances such as the unfairness of the amount of reparations Germany was required to pay after WWI.

JB,
I visited Talinn as a teen in 1981. Must be much different. A friend and I had wandered away from our tour and kept trying to eat on our own in restaurants and they all refused us and said we had to go and eat with our group. Very weird. Did they think we were spies? Did they think KGB would think we were spies and would get tehm in trouble for having us there?
I remember there was a little cave dug out of a massive rock at the base of the hill of the old city that served spiced wine. It really was a cave.
Old Talinn looked like a middle-European village from the 17th century. Very cute and well-preserved. Wonder if it still looks like that or has been destroyed by oligarch developers.
benson,
I really respect rabbi Bachman's call for non-engagement but entirely sympathize with ken's anger about this. While these crazies are entitled to their beliefs, they are going to be creating a confrontational situation outside a synagogue on the holiest shabbat of the year (think Sunday mass right before Christmas) and it is some kid's bat mitzvah at the same time. I really don't care whether they are threatening violence, the protest is despicable. The notion of one group trying to impose its idea of god and holiness on another in an angry way is despicable to me, and I have a few thousand years of history to back me up on that. I imagine that is what is driving ken's anger. I think non-confrontation is probably the way to go and the key is to keep enough of the entrace free and clear to that the holiness of the day for the congregation and family members can remain relatively intact. Confrontation would make this harder. Hopefully this will fizzle.
kens, I doubt they will target synagogues in Brighton as I imagine none are particularly well-known for supporting gay rights. Not that they are bigoted, just not necessarily hotbeds of liberal theology or activity.

...although if it's on Craigslist it's almost certainly not my place. Landlords listed it with like 3 or 4 different brokers. I wouldn't say deal of the century although the asking keeps dropping and is now $575/mo less than what we were paying. As a sign of the times the place has been on the market for well over a month, lots of lookers but no takers. When I rented the place I grabbed it literally minutes after it hit the market and at the time it was one of the only liveable 3 beds on the market. The rental market in the slope is obviously much, much softer that August 2007.

A good idea for the synagogues would be to erect some sort of large sheet that would block off view of the synagogues themselves and leave those nutballs yelling at a black screen, unable to see the worshipers at all and shielding the worshipers from having to even see their disgusting signs.

I agree with Jessi, *rob* and etson. The Nazis formed a political party and originally came to power in Germany in 1933 through the legitimate electoral process. The Westboro people are nothing more than traveling hatemongers, and I can't imagine any of them being elected to anything.

I am just as conflicted. I wouldn't want to give Westboro the satisfaction of a confrontation but it seems wrong somehow to ignore it, as if we don't care. The Rabbi is right- his shul should ignore them, but would the rest of us standing in silent protest give anything to Westboro? I don't think so. Westboro will use it as they will- but seeing fellow New Yorkers standing together send a powerful message to us, ourselves. We're the ones who need it.

James Bond has a preservationist connection.
Goldfinger was named after an architect who had desgined some modernist houses in Hampstead, north London. Ian Fleming, the author of the James Bond books, was a local resident & preservationist and objected to the deomolition of a row of cottages to make way for them. His revenge was to name the baddie in one of the books after Goldfinger.

The Kensington studio seems like a pretty good deal. Seems clean and fairly nice layout. Mine is bigger with a bit higher maintenance and nicer renovations. If someone is willing to give me 150K for mine today, I'll sell it and walk away gladly.
By the way, get ready for higher real estate taxes. Had a board meeting yesterday and city slapped us with 33% tax increase!!!!! We'll try to fight the new assessment in court but unlikely to win since Bloomy is trying to get money any way he can. We'll have to increase maintenance by 7 percent this year to make up for these increases. Freakin craziness.

"that's a remarkably civilised way to "get back at someone" Etson!"
The best way to "get back at someone" is to write them into a book/movie available to the entire world.
Better to re-write about them.
Sometimes it's best to just write them off.

By the way, the studio location is great, convenient to everything and the building is really nice. I saw a one bedroom in that building during the peak of the market and wanted to put in an offer but they wouldn't budge on the price and they wanted on the higher end of what that apartment was worth during that time.

hipster, remember that that friend of mine I told you about - the one who lives around the corner from the Brooklyn Inn? He and I have strategized at some length over many cocktails at the Brooklyn Inn as to how exactly one would survive the zombie apocalypse in New York City. We concluded that surviving the zombie apocalypse would be easier than surviving an attack of killer robots because zombies, even though potentially great in number, are comparatively easy to put down (blow / shot to head - I mean come on, everyone knows how to kill a zombie) and are much dumber than killer robots. Problem is, depending on the killer robots they might be easier to hide from than zombies, which can access any space that a human can shuffle into. But I would say that on balance I would rather face a zombie apocalypse than an attack of the killer robots.

lechecal, I can't believe I not only followed your post on Zombies vs. Killer Robots (great movie concept, btw!), but agree with you totally. Perhaps I've seen one too many Zombie movies, but, if you have the ammo, you can take 'em all out. Robots, not so much.
Posted by: CarrollGardened at September 25, 2009 12:51 PM
C-Gar - in fact this entire debate ultimately spawned the defeatist catch phrase "let the killer robots win!"
Posted by: lechacal at September 25, 2009 12:54 PM
Interesting point Kens (at the risk of bringing a real estate discussion into the OT).
Renters are not going to put up with rising rents in this economy so the landlords are going to have to wear the tax increases = lower net yield = lower achievable prices for sales that do go through.
Bernanke & Co may be trying to keep the RE market afloat but Bloomberg is tugging it back down again.

Real estate is far scarier to me than zombies.
I'm outta here!!!!!
Posted by: Biff Champion at September 25, 2009 12:57 PM
The counter-argument, of course, is that zombies are effectively self-replicating while killer robots are not. Also, there is no effective way to incapacitate all zombies at once rather than killing them one by one. Killer robots, on the other hand, may be susceptible to computer viruses.

she's a black belt in karate

to defeat those evil machines
I know she can beat them
Oh Yoshimi, they don't believe me
but you won't let those robots eat me
Yoshimi, they don't believe me
but you won't let those robots defeat me
Those evil-natured robots
they're programmed to destroy us
she's gotta be strong to fight them
so she's taking lots of vitamins
'Cause she knows that
it'd be tragic
if those evil robots win
I know she can beat them
Oh Yoshimi, they don't believe me

Thanks, Arkady- will do!
Personally I never travel into the zombie/killer robot zones without a personal geek hacker who reprograms the robots to kill zombies (saving us ammunition), and then will either self-destruct or shut down for further reprogramming once al the zombies are dead. Zombies, being composed of dead tissue cannot replicate. It is possible that killer robots have the technology to self-replicate asexually but seem to have little interest in going that route. On occasion they have had sex with zombies (we all know what that's like- they just lie there) but they seem to be extracting the oil in body fat to grease their working parts.

Back to real estate talk.... Chicken, indeed Bloomy will drag the prices down if he keeps instituting these tax increases. Prices for co-op will drop if the maintenance will be through the roof with no offer of amenities unless every building and house has a rise in taxes at the same percentage which I am sure will not happen. How are these things assessed anyways? Based on land and building value? Depreciation included? State of the co-op included? Cash reserve included? Just based on income statement? I'm meeting with our accountants next month and will pick their brains about that.

california closets suuuuuuck. overpriced. crappy labor. not worth it versus custom. elfa is a good midpriced option (container store). and for the first time, they have been having REAL sales on elfa. a friend of mine did a master closet for about $4k i think it was. with all the bells. installation was smooth. i did 4 closets with cali closets years ago and it was a nightmare. they had to do one 3X because they kept messing up the measurements. granted, they looked pretty nice when they were done, but was very turned off by the cheesy sales people (the consultant is just some random person that is a franchisee or something and is of NO HELP with follow up issues. my consultant, winston something was just awful). if those are your only two choices go elfa.

"Carroll, why don't you start a porn site with Zombies and Robots."
ReW, I know some people get off on sex with Zombies and Killer Robots, but they just don't do it for me. Though, these sites do cater to all sorts of fetishes, so I suppose we can have a Zombies area and a Robots area, but I'll have to run it by DIBS first (I'm sure it'll be fine if at least some of the Zombies and Robots are Asian).

Posted by: CarrollGardened at September 25, 2009 1:23 PM
On a serious note lechacal - zombies are not necessarily easier to avoid/kill - it depends from what movie the zombies will act like. Night of the Living Dead, sure - they are slow and stupid. But Dawn of the Dead, 28 Days Later and some other ones the zombies are fast and smart.

"lechacal, you and I are the only other two members of the BRC (Brownstoner Republicans Club) if I remember correctly."
DIBS, there are others, but I can't divulge their identities on the OT

Speak for yourself, Dave.

anyone ever cut their nails too short? paaaaaaaaaaaaain! i'm trying to finish off some work and keep getting distracted. earlier i got a giant chocolate blob from maison du chocolat across the street. the upside of them hurting for business means that you get tons of free samples while shopping there. :) of course the downside is that a small bag of choco is $25. and by small bag i mean like 8 pieces.
Posted by: CG_ups at September 25, 2009 3:35 PM
my friend had a mocachino right before we went to get chocolate so afterwards she had a mega sugar caffeine high and would NOT shut up. she called me as soon as we got back to our desks and i had to hang up on her! haha

OT Rules and Regs
Here's what's allowed on the OT: Discussions about things relevant to life in Brooklyn such as cats, poop, parties, Europeans, cuisine, butts, breasts and other body parts. Here's what's not allowed: Discussion of bodily functions (except poo mist) and gross talk about preening and personal hygiene like fingernail cutting. Thank you.

So - yelling " we walk on the right side of the sidewalk in America" at a european tourist might almost get you into a fight apparently.

"So - yelling " we walk on the right side of the sidewalk in America" at a european tourist might almost get you into a fight apparently."
This is why you are NOT allowed out of the office during the day, Dirty.
[Hopefully you also dropped your shoulder and knocked the ET over as you went by too.]

Take my responsibilities as a citizen seriously? Moi? As much as I hate to disabuse of that notion, I must confess to owning a major share of the nanotechnology company that I will be using to overwhelm the killer robots. Think of the money I'll make! (future projects include preventing gerbil pregnancies, creating intelligent beings out of diatomaceous earth and shiny little outfits for dogs.)
Posted by: bxgrl at September 25, 2009 3:55 PM
you're ok with poop and graphic discussion about the eyebrow raising activities in your "boudoir" and elsewhere, but referencing fingernail maintenace is too much for you dave? haha. different worlds.
Posted by: CG_ups at September 25, 2009 3:57 PM
Of course Beoch - they were also walking 4 people across Lafayette. Seriously?
Posted by: dirty_hipster at September 25, 2009 3:57 PM
Dirty, I just noticed that it appears you have a double space between dirty and hipster in your name. was that intentional? is it some sort of hipster punctuation style specific to wmsburg?
Posted by: brighton beoch at September 25, 2009 3:57 PM
were they holding hands four across as well, covering the ENTIRE sidewalk? that is one of my personal favorites.
Posted by: brighton beoch at September 25, 2009 3:59 PM
dh, people walking more than two abreast (and slowly) is very, very annoying.
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at September 25, 2009 3:59 PM
Or how about the two people together each carrying one strap of each side of a large bag!!!!!
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at September 25, 2009 4:01 PM
dave, i was going to use the term "abreast" but was afraid of the discussion/comments/puns that might ensue. but since you busted it out [oops] . . . .
Posted by: brighton beoch at September 25, 2009 4:01 PM
haha - it is meant to be ironic beoch - check your email and i'll explain
dave - yeah, i can't STAND when people walk more than 2 abreast on nyc streets. one of the reasons I hate working in soho is bc no one seems to give a shit about walking into people.

Nothing gets by your sharp mind, beoch, nothing.
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at September 25, 2009 4:04 PM
Another thing...tourists who wait at the corner for the crossing light to change when there is actually no traffic. Arrrrgggghhhhhhh.
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at September 25, 2009 4:06 PM
The best is the women who walk around with their hand bag resting on that soft spot on the inside of their elbow with their arm cocked upwards, and doing the same thing with a shopping bad with the other arm (usually from Topshop) - so they are walking around with both arms pointed up. Looks atrocious.
Posted by: dirty_hipster at September 25, 2009 4:07 PM
One time a tourist asked me where "soho street" was.

dh...an American friend of mine who lives in Hong Kong was flying into Hong Hong once back in the day when you flew right over the bright lights of the city and could even see all the neon signs.
Some American tourists were on the plane and one of them saw the signs and said "That must be Chinatown."
WonTon..you remember that approach to Kai Tak??? Wasn't that the best????
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at September 25, 2009 4:12 PM
Where's the retort today???
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at September 25, 2009 4:12 PM
I am at the epicenter of bad tourist behavior myself - lodged uncomfortably between FAO Schwarz and the Apple store. I rarely leave my bldg during the day lest I go postal on some family of ETs having their pic taken with the grown men dressed up as soldiers in front of Foxtrot Alpha Oscar. Now THERE'S a career change you might consider, Dirty.
Posted by: brighton beoch at September 25, 2009 4:15 PM
hiding from you, Dave.
Posted by: brighton beoch at September 25, 2009 4:16 PM
haha Dave - I'm sure American tourists can be 1000x more obnoxious than foreign tourists in America
I usually love giving directions to people who aren't familiar with the city.
The one i get the most is "where is cleveland place"
Posted by: dirty_hipster at September 25, 2009 4:16 PM
What's on Cleveland Place???
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at September 25, 2009 4:18 PM
haha beoch - i'd be the only fake soldier with a real bayonette on his fake rifle.

All, the Crown Heights North House Tour is NEXT weekend, Oct 3rd, from 12-5. Tickets are $20 in advance, $25 at door. The tour starts from St. Gregory's Church on the corner of St John's Place and Brooklyn Ave, close to the 3 train at either Nostrand or Kingston stops. We've got 9 houses on tour, and other architectural goodies. We're showing some amazing architecture and interiors belonging to oldtimers, newcomers and those in between, with period gems on up to new condos. It's going to be our best tour yet, with lots of variety, and also easy to walk. We are having opening ceremonies at around 10:15, with informational tables and snacks.
If you need any more details, let me know. I can also reserve advance tickets for you.

"i'd be the only fake soldier with a real bayonette on his fake rifle."
I don't doubt it for a second.
Posted by: brighton beoch at September 25, 2009 4:21 PM
"What's on Cleveland Place???"
not sure - a crappy mexican joint, a cheesecake store - but I think the 'storefront for art and architecture' might have a cleveland pl address even though it's on Kenmare.
Regardless, people are looking for something there.

Women like that are the only ones in New York it seems. Every morning I see them parading to the subway, with their personal bag on one side, their gym/yoga/change of clothes on the other.

JB - what is it that you'd like me to share?
Posted by: brighton beoch at September 25, 2009 4:44 PM
I'm from Philly, too. Thought we might be old neighbors.
Posted by: jessibaby at September 25, 2009 4:48 PM

i grew up in lower merion. you?
Posted by: brighton beoch at September 25, 2009 4:52 PM

Posted by: brighton beoch at September 25, 2009 4:53 PM
Ding ding ding!!! Too funny. Taking the train to Merion station tonight! Did you go to LM?
Posted by: jessibaby at September 25, 2009 4:54 PM
JB, I'm on 12th & Waverly, just south of Pine
When did you last live there??
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at September 25, 2009 4:55 PM
no WAY!!! I sure did! I'm from Penn Wynne.
that is great! and now you are basically my neighbor in BH too.
we need to play main line geography at some point (not on the OT).

will you bring me back a corned beef sandwich from hymies (or are you a murray's girl)?
Posted by: brighton beoch at September 25, 2009 4:57 PM
dave, so NOW you want to talk about philly. you looked at me like i was from mars when i tried to talk to you about it at ratifico.
Posted by: brighton beoch at September 25, 2009 4:59 PM
BB - Love it!
Dave, I haven't lived in Philly since 2001, but when I last did I was on 15th and Waverly. I'm always trying to drag my friend to Dmitris on Catherine St. but they all have kids and won't leave the burbs.
Posted by: jessibaby at September 25, 2009 5:00 PM
Done! I'm a total Hymies girl.
Posted by: jessibaby at September 25, 2009 5:03 PM
dave, you can bring me a cheese steak from jim's.
Posted by: brighton beoch at September 25, 2009 5:03 PM
I don't remember that Beoch. But perhaps it was because I was with the Chinese bf and didn't really want to talk about my life down there with my actual partner. If I gave you one of those weird looks, that must have been it. Sorry. LOL
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at September 25, 2009 5:04 PM
JB..Dmitiri's is still great. They have one now on FitlerSquare but it's not as good as the original.
There are sooooooo many great restaurants now in Philly. We are going to a relatively new one tonight, Cochon, one of our new favorites.
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at September 25, 2009 5:07 PM
fantastic! i was always jealous bc one of my best friends' families had a house account at hymies. she could literally go there and get whatever she wanted, whenever. plus it was in walking distance from her house. we had to drive.
Posted by: brighton beoch at September 25, 2009 5:07 PM
Sorry, beoch, I only go to Ish Kibbibles
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at September 25, 2009 5:07 PM

Posted by: brighton beoch at September 25, 2009 5:08 PM
yeah, the restaurant scene in philly got so much better after we moved away. every time i go there now (which admittedly isn't that often), i am amazed at all the great places there are to eat.
Posted by: brighton beoch at September 25, 2009 5:11 PM
Certainly explains the stink eye you gave me!
Posted by: brighton beoch at September 25, 2009 5:08 PM

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at September 25, 2009 5:16 PM
What crappy ass handbag are you carrying today JB?? ;)
Posted by: dirty_hipster at September 25, 2009 5:17 PM
