So it's 1 o'clock in the morning, and I find myself in the Wyckoff Houses with lechacal, DH and DeLepp, banging on apartment doors and shouting at the top of our lungs, "Everybody up! Get your life belts on! Everybody up! Get your life belts on!", under lechacal's command naturally, until finally this guy opens his door with a switchblade (I swear to God - I could not make this stuff up), but the second lechacal stares him down, the guy retreats back into his apartment. What happened after that is still a little fuzzy, so if one of my partners in crime could fill me in I'd be grateful.

CGar, are you serious!?!? I am so happy I left before that.
I'll go check today's crime blotter to see if any PLUSAs are mentioned.

CGar, tell me you were dreaming.

DH - Thanks for bailing me out dude. The knife wound kind of hurts but they gave me some pretty good painkillers.

As a gesture of peace to those whom I inappropriately offended the other day, I feel I should demonstrate that I do - regardless of my inarticulate and piggish comments - truly respect women. You know who is actually really smart and funny and a good writer and witty at the same time (and also really attractive but it's her brain that I truly respect)? Anne Coulter.
Have fun today kids.

Dang Todd, you just had to go and mention cats...
Posted by: Biff Champion at September 11, 2009 9:31 AM
It was all my fault - I was listening to my ipod, text messaging and completely unaware of my surroundings.

"As a gesture of peace to those whom I inappropriately offended the other day"
What about those whom you appropriately offended?
I don't think they deserve an apology.

OK good, so all the PLUSAs checked in who we left behind last night except DeLepp. Did he get home alright?
Snappy, Rob and myself ended up at a diner in park slope cause we were starving and had some good laughs.

BTW, Bitter and Brighton, it was great meeting you guys last night. We didn't get to chat much since you guys split quickly but hopefully next time we will. I'm looking forward to meeting Pork Slap as well :o).

Very funny, jackal. Yes, she's smart, clever, attractive (not my type), a good writer . . . . and a bit off her rocker.

well, I got to watch the game last night. crap, that doesn't sound like big enough silver lining for missing out the drink session.

My plumber never showed up. Grrr.
Posted by: Arkady at September 11, 2009 9:54 AM
Hi folks;
Damn, it sounds like I missed alot of fun. Sorry I had to leave early to prepare for my business trip. I'm off to Israel today, followed by Milan, Italy and then Oslo, Norway. How should I dress?!?!?!
I never seem to stay long enough to chat with all. Maybe next time.
Jackal: sorry, I disagree about Ann Coulter. She's a nut job in my book. I recently put her in the same league as Bill Maher: provocative just to garner attention, not because of any philosophical principles.
Now Laura Ingraham, that's another story!! I love Laura!! Not only is she smart, she's actually a nice person too.
Posted by: benson at September 11, 2009 9:57 AM
Arkady, we were discussing yesterday how, despite the current economy, contractors are as unreliable and unresponsive as ever. Must be nice to be able to survive these days while still giving the impression you don't give a crap about taking on new projects or finishing those you started.
Posted by: Biff Champion at September 11, 2009 9:57 AM
Arkady,
so plumber STIFF'd you. did you watch the football game while waiting or football not your thing?
Posted by: more4less at September 11, 2009 9:57 AM
Benson,
dont rub it in. summer ending is already denting the mood so you rubbing it in with those great locations is uncalled for. BTW, do these trips allow enough free time to check out the places? I find most of my business trips usually are way packed with too many mtgs lasting deep into the night
Posted by: more4less at September 11, 2009 10:02 AM
m4l - no t.v. yet.
Biffers - I invited the no-show by telling him it isn't an emergency. He's very responsive when I truly need him so I allow a lot of slack. He's also terrif at talking me through fixes he thinks I can manage - at base, he thinks I should be able to do this one but so far I've screwed it up.
Posted by: Arkady at September 11, 2009 10:02 AM
slopefram- can you believe benson and I agree on Coulter and Crooklyn? Yep. But Ingraham we most decidedly do not. She's an ape. Mentally speaking. And as bigoted as Crooklyn in her own way. Other than that I am not getting into a discussion of dem/rep on 9-11. Not the say for it.

Too true, I did a little 'damage' myself last night—nothing some advil and lots of water won't cure, though!
I heard some noise out on the deck last night, is the tent leaking again?
Posted by: cobblehiller at September 11, 2009 10:03 AM
Arkady, so you missed a PLUSA gathering knowing full well you might not have needed to stay in? Sounds like grounds for a hearing on your PLUSA status. Then again, since you were one of the four votes that got me elected President, I am inclined to look the other way on this one.
Posted by: Biff Champion at September 11, 2009 10:04 AM

I'm with you about 9-11. Jackal was just having fun and I thought a light response would be ok today. But yeah, no serious debates for me. I may actually try to keep it light for a while. My office is quite near the WTC site. I hear the bell when the toll it.
I would expect you and benson to agree on crooklyn. Good to see so many folks coming through.

DH / Kens,
if you guys notice later that there's fewer talent in your hoods than usual, the answer is they're here in Midtown. Man, today was the most talent (guys too) I've seen ever around here. Tons of model looking talent too. is it fashion week or something?
Posted by: more4less at September 11, 2009 10:25 AM
m4l:
BINGO! it is fashion week
Posted by: gemini10 at September 11, 2009 10:28 AM
Arkady,
No emergency. I'll wait.
benson,
the borsalino is ok. No need for a yarmulke. Many lubavitchers wear similar (albeit much less stylish) hats in lieu of yarmulkes. They'll think you're a chabadnik over there.
Reminds me of an old photo caption in the Jerusalem Post. It was a picture of the pope and Israeli prime minister reviewing a parade together (PM was probably Menachem Begin). Caption read, in part: "The pope is the one wearing the yarmulke."
Posted by: slopefarm at September 11, 2009 10:30 AM

Cobble, the tent is surprisingly waterproof - Chet did a great job weatherproofing this season. Sorry about the commotion on the deck - it was just lechecal, DH and DeLepp dropping me off after our tour through the Wyckoff Houses (and, apparently, the Gowanus Houses as well).

Any PLUSAs read Hebrew (other than Cobble, of course)?
We got something in the mail from the World Jewish Congress and Champette #1 asked me to read it and I actually had troubles. I was bummed out; I used to read Hebrew perfectly. It didn't have the vowels, which threw me off a bit, but still...

I'm not sure I've ever ridden the 71 so I can't say how that bus is. The absolute worst bus is the B41. Always super packed and full of folks who would rather risk going to jail stabbing you than to give up a seat or lose out on a seat that is opening up. Yikes. And, it's the longest ride ever to Kings Plaza on that puppy.

I only ever take it on weekends and usually early in the morning, so maybe that's why I never noticed it being that bad, until Prospect Park.
Ok, that was embarrassing. I just asked the Orthodox dude in my office about the words, which are printed on a little metal scroll type thing. Turns out it isn't words but the first ten letters of the Hebrew alphabet representing the Ten Commandments. I am a disgrace to Jewish Jedis everywhere.

Biff, I have an Acer (more off the shelf as-is vs. more customization thru Dell). inexpensive. almost 4 yrs already and no problems. a little more $$$, HP and Toshibas are good bets. I had a toshiba prior to the Acer and it too had no problems for the 5 yrs I had it. key is never buy the current top of the line model but rather middle of the pack model which is usually pretty discounted. This makes it a lot easier decision if & when you want to trade up for a new one 2-3 yrs later.

actually cobblehiller the key is for the first and last letter to be correct. Everything in the middle can basically be a complete jumble and people will understand it perfectly well. The brain of a fluent reader looks at the first and last letters and then does sort of a sampling of what's in the middle. Someone who is learning to read will actually focus on every letter.

Biff, I stick with Dells cause they are cheaper than MACs but if you're willing to shell out a bit more, get a MAC. Most of them run dual Windows and Mac software these days so they are compatible with your other PCs. If you need specific advice on specs then email me and tell me what you are going to be primarily using it for and I can recommend different options based on your usage.
Avoid VISTA at all costs!!!!

Hi, Open threaders,
I don't normally read or post here, but I have just learned that The What now has a blog of his own, and I thought I'd share. Maybe you already know about it, but I had to tell someone!

Cobble, I'll take it!
Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at September 11, 2009 11:21 AM
Lechacal, that's describes how I read Chinese.
BTW, you misspelled your name in your response to Beoch on faulty product
Posted by: more4less at September 11, 2009 11:21 AM
Oh for crying out loud, lechacal, do you ever relax?
Posted by: cobblehiller at September 11, 2009 11:21 AM
Speaking of the What, I was reading that triangle thread from yesterday (WTF by the way!!!) and saw that folks were asking Cobble to convince the What to come on back. Is he unbanned but now just in a self-exile status or is he still banned?
Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at September 11, 2009 11:22 AM
Cobble...Lechacal definitely relaxes...you shoulda seen him last night! We had a dirty joke fest going on :-) (still giggling)

Kris, We knew that the day he put up the blog. you have to visit us in the OT a bit more. :o)

Kris, you so two-thousand and late.
Posted by: infinitejester at September 11, 2009 11:24 AM
Slope, isn't the first one in the "jinx" to say the word/phrase/idea the recipient of said coke?
M4L, interesting. A member of Mrs. C's family who is a computer geek (bound to have at least one of those in a family of Asians, sorry) heavily recommended the Acer too. While lesser known and inexpensive, apparently they've cornered the market on something (which escapes me) that makes them cutting edge and the Company indispensable in the industry at the moment.
I like the idea of not going for all the bells and whistles as we just need it for the basic functions and I do like trading up every few years. Mrs. C said she's going to trade up in the husband department if I'm not careful.
I will check into Toshibas and HPs as well. I used Toshibas a lot at work and don't recall having major issues with them.
Posted by: Biff Champion at September 11, 2009 11:26 AM
cobble, have to agree with the Snapster - when lechacal isn't scaring the sh*t out of me, he's a blast to hang with
Posted by: CarrollGardened at September 11, 2009 11:26 AM
as long as WHAT continues to use that unnecessary nasty language to the PLUSA crew, he can stay away. I don't like anyone who uses that kind of shitty language against people I view as friends. in real life, if someone said shit like that to my friends, there would be nasty confrontation.
Posted by: more4less at September 11, 2009 11:26 AM
CH;
Your Italian is awful.
The correct phrase: Oggi fa freddo!
M4L;
Fortunately (for me) I do get some time to poke around each city. Hey, somebody has to do it!
See you around.
Posted by: benson at September 11, 2009 11:28 AM
Whoah cobblehiller - seriously - I was just explaining what's behind the whole letter jumble thing. I think it's actually pretty interesting. If that was offensive to you then I have absolutely no idea what your buttons are and really don't particularly care whether I offend you. You can either keep getting all worked up about everything I say or you can just chill way the fuck out.
Posted by: lechacal at September 11, 2009 11:29 AM
I understood it lechacal. I read the article too.
"Your Italian is awful."
You mean my mac translator is awful, thank you!

Biff,
You can't be first in a jinx or it's not a jinx. We were a minute off, so technicaly not a jinx. Coke goes to the first to call it.
Posted by: slopefarm at September 11, 2009 11:31 AM
Biff, Acer has pretty dominant mkt share in Europe and Asia. Since they bought gateway, think they're #3 computer maker in the world (HP #1, Dell #2).
if you have frequent fights for TV remote control with the Mrs, consider getting 17in or bigger screen with the antenna - so you can watch some TV on it

Pathetic Loser Usual Suspect Asshat
Kris,
Welcome!! Your PLUSA manual, tiara, and membership card are in the mail.
Please be advised that upon attending your first PLUSA gathering, you will be expected to buy the first round of shots. Identification of one or more PLUSAs will earn you extra credit.
Please send Snappy your membership dues by the 15th of the month, she gets cranky if you're late, and we stop sending the newsletter after two late payments.
Also, please advise your boss that s/he needs to lighten your workload so that you can keep up with posting regularly. Spotty posting is frowned upon!!
Best, Mgmt.

G-d- I can barely speak english and you guys are prattling away in hebrew, Italian,French... I used to read and speak hebrew, still retain some Spanish but only to read, and my Yiddish consists of cursewords- which is what I remember learning from my parents :-)
Sorry for sounding crabby earlier, slopefarm I didn't make it into the city today- a first for me this year. I woke up this morning and just couldn't deal with it. I did something last night and will be doing stuff tomorrow and several other days but it gets harder every year.
I bought an Acer last year at a great price. 4 g ram, 250g hard drive. The video card could be upgraded but at least its not sharing ram. $600 bucks. My biggest complaint? The cat snagged a nail under the cap lock and I have to stick it back on. My other laptop is an pre-Dell alienware which I have to upgrade a bit now.

"if you have frequent fights for TV remote control with the Mrs, consider getting 17in or bigger screen with the antenna - so you can watch some TV on it"
M4L, that never happens. Mrs. C and I have an understanding. I ALWAYS get the remote control. She's not so into TV and can watch another one if she really wants to. In exchange, she gets complete freedom over everything else in the home...furniture, renovations, decorations, etc. All I want is my MTV, I couldn't care less about anything else. Good thing, since I have no taste whatsover, other than in wives. (You reading this, honey?)

My employer has a no attractive people policy. Men and women alike. They hired one good looking lawyer in the mid-80s and no work got done for months. On a scale of 1 to 10 you had better be a 1 if you want your resume to be taken seriously. Just having straight teeth can put you in jeapordy of not getting a callback interview.

Posted by: Biff Champion at September 11, 2009 11:49 AM
It's modern & it says, "It's all Greek to me" (actually it says, "It's all Chinese to me" which is the language the Greeks use as a synonym for 'baffling'.)

I worked in a law firm by Central Park and it was definitely what Lechacal describes BUT then went to the one in downtown and figured out where the 7-10s lawyers venture. We had a pretty good looking bunch there. I am surprised I got hire there but then again, I was the back office help and they only let me out of my cubicle at nights.

Your custom made tiara with appropriate birth stones and a humongous star of david in the center is in the mail, e-hubs. I envision you wearing it with a psychedelic print tight knit shirt, (double knit), open to the waist, large gold Chai on a heavy chain, over tan double knit slacks. (You'll need curling chest hair to complete this look) Matching light color shoes with a heel. Otherwise you won't get the full effect.

In my experience a law firm's collective hotness is inversely proportionate to its standing in the league tables. Kens, I think I know what firm you're talking about. (first initial W?)

I actually asked the bartenders for a bowl of munchies at some point during the night and the dude said they don't give them out after 8. I loved the Brooklyn Inn, but it was a bit douchey to not oblige us with the snacks given all the money we spent. I wasn't very impressed with the bartenders. When I arrived and the place was still pretty empty, the first guy carried on a conversation forever with two regulars while I was waiting to order and he knew I was there. I can't stand that. It's a great place to hang out but the two bartenders were a tad CVS-esque in their service.

The bartender told Rob he'd have to wait to get a drink cause he need to go smoke a cigarette. WTF??? At one point DeLepp wanted a drink and couldn't find the bartender at all. Oh, and that back room is *way* too small for a pool table...even a rinky dink one like they had.

Agreed Biff. I really like the Brooklyn Inn, but the bartender was surly ("You can have another round of Kamikaze shots as soon as you return the shot glasses from the last round"), and we spent some decent cash there.

I actually mentioned to DH that I suspect the monkey suit might have irked them and spurred them to try to have some fun with me. Lechacal, did you have any problems or did you just frighten them into promptly providing you with drinks?

surprised to hear that the service was bad at bk inn but i think they are not used to big crowds and since being highlighted in gossip girl last season maybe they are suspicious (aka dicky) to non-regulars? totally uncool though.
Posted by: CG_ups at September 11, 2009 12:24 PM
"biff grew a beard? he didn't used to have one, right?"
That was a bit of poetic license on my part. It was actually more of a Don Johnson 5 o'clock shadow.
As they say, don't let the facts get in the way of a good story.
Posted by: brighton beoch at September 11, 2009 12:24 PM

For the record I will never give my employer's name on this site or even play guessing games along those lines. Offline if a totally different story of course. I'm just who I am and don't obscure anything at all for those of you who have gotten to know me in person. I actually think doing the anonymous thing once you have hung out with someone a few times is a little creepy, but that's just me.
Posted by: lechacal at September 11, 2009 12:31 PM
Hmmm, I feel like we were at a different bar. I had a pretty good experience in Brooklyn Inn. The bartender was very good with me and even called me Sir a bunch of times (which I found a bit weird). At one point, by the time I made it to the part of the bar where the bartender was, he already had a drink (vodka cranberry of course) waiting for me. He saw me walking towards him and poured it right away.

Lechacal, it's my former employer so I don't care much. You got the firm though right?
Brighton, if you email me I'll tell you what the real name of the firm is and the whole thing will make sense right away (BKJester3@aol.com). You definitely have heard of them. They are one of the big boys.

Tips for dealing with bartenders:
1) while sitting at the bar - even if it's noisy, they can hear everything you say. so complaining about service won't get you anywhere.
2) let them talk to regulars. i think proper etiquette is give them 5 minutes to wrap up a convo. Regulars are how they make their money during the week, because chances are your ass won't be back there next Monday alone.
3) Tip well. 2 bucks per beer - 5 bucks for a round of 3 and you'll eventually get that back.
4) don't do the awkward lean in between people at the bar and wave your money at them - they can see you standing normally. eye contact is sufficient.
Posted by: dirty_hipster at September 11, 2009 12:37 PM
All of those are definitely true, dh.

Are we not supposed to give our employer's name on this site?
Do I now have to refer to my Company as "Rhymes With Meth Bar"?
I like giving all of my personal details on this site and obscuring everything in person, but that's just me.

DH, I'll have my notepad on the next gathering so remember to usher me over as you're doing the bartender hookup thing - the chinaman wants to learn
Posted by: more4less at September 11, 2009 12:44 PM
DH, I think I pretty much followed the guidelines to a T. The only thing I might have been guilty of doing was leaning in and onto the bar. But I never ever do the waving the money thing, which I feel is degrading and obnoxious.
CG_Ups, if there was a feature to delete all of the comments one regretted posting, I wouldn't have anything left here. Then again, that would make many people very happy, I'm sure.

and when you do get a buy back tip back at least half of the drink amount

Uh oh. Does that include PBR? I'm definitely guilty of violating that rule!

I hope everyone has etched in stone the date for the Crown Heights North House Tour - Saturday Oct 3rd, from 12-5. We just nailed down the final houses, and we've got some absolute beauties, with something for everyone. Period detail dripping houses, modern gut reno's, some with a combo of both, and brand new loft condos. Advance tix are $20, day of tix are $25. If you want to buy advance, talk to me or bxgrl.
End of official plug.

Speaking of tipping, I remember years ago being in a pub in London with my cousin and I tipped a quid when served my first pint. He looked at me like I was crazy. I didn't realize one doesn't do that there...at least not way back then. I'll tip well when tipping is expected but I do think there is something to be said for putting the employer on the hook to provide a decent wage and not making servers live off tips. I can see the advantage of having control over what you give based on the service provided, but it's gotten out of hand when I'm expected to throw a buck or loose change in a makeshift plastic piggy bank thing at the corner store when picking up a coffee.
If one doesn't tip, even when experiencing horrible service at a bar, one basically won't be served, so it defeats the purpose of rewarding people for providing good service.

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at September 11, 2009 1:04 PM
Rob,
$1 might be standard but according to DH's proven track record of hook-up's the add'l $1 is worthwhile.
here's some math to prove the point:
- let's say beer is $5-$6 each
- 1 hookup (free $5-$6 beer) would require you to buy 5 to 6 beers (tipping $1) to break even from a $$$ standpoint
- plus now bartender knows / likes you
Posted by: more4less at September 11, 2009 1:04 PM

Sir, an explanation:
I was standing innocently outside talking with Snappy when some PLUSAs told me I should "start wearing bowties." I replied I'd rather pass out on the sidewalk "like this" than do that, and demonstrated. That ended the conversation rather abruptly.
Back inside, it was impossible to tell the story without demonstrating. And then it was just so much fun.

C-Gar - I was telling beoch last night about how there is a persistent rumor where I work that I used to be a Navy Seal. I don't know how it started, but it's one of those things that sounds cool enough that people want to believe it so no matter how many times I tell people it isn't true the rumor sticks. People are so misinformed by TV and movies that they think if someone was a Navy Seal they wouldn't even be allowed to talk about it, so of course I would have to say I'm not an ex-Seal even though I was. Really silly stuff, but on the other hand it is kind of a cool rumor to have out there. I mean it's better than people whispering that you have a raging case of crabs or something.

Biff, that was a per hookup ratio / relationship. 2 hookup's and one would need to buy 10-12 (tipping $1) to break even. Besides, just give your beer $$$ to DH cause he seems to be able to generate better svc and better BEER return on the investmt

Etson
what time is dinner?
reason I ask b/c you can probably get away at eating at countless great spots if you plan to eat before 7pm
after that- much harder and narrows down your choices
one of my favorite places to go is Ethos on 3rd and like 32nd street - really nice greek food, decent prices, nice staff - good Greek wine!
Posted by: gemini10 at September 11, 2009 1:24 PM
rob - blair went to brooklyn the first time to threaten vanessa to dump nate else she would blackmail her. SCANDALOUS! :)
etson - by not too far north, do you mean midtown and south? lots of stuff to fit in that description, be more specific! also it's a friday night, so a quiet place may be tough without a resy. maybe the place on west fourth street? one of my fave little mellow hidden spots, great food, nice vibe, and totally reasonably priced.

CarGar, I had a job all week. (yea!) I don't have computer access at these showrooms, so I'm pretty out of touch when I do these jobs. No Blackberry or IPhone here.
M4L, it's a self guided tour. You can redeem your ticket anytime between 12 and around 3:30, at St. Gregory's church on the corner of Brookln and St Johns, look at the map, and go. You aren't required to go in the order we suggest, or even see everything if you don't want to. The brochure has descriptions of each stop, and you can cherry pick, or go in any order you choose.
Kens, as I said the day after I saw you, it never ceases to amaze me that you can run into people you know in this city of 8 million. It was great seeing you, too.

RE: ROBI (return on beer investment)
you also have to factor in it's standard bartender etiquette (in a normal bar) to buy you your fifth round.
also, more likely to get a buyback on a draft beer than a bottle (bar might keep inventory on bottled beer or track levels of premium spirits used in mixed drinks)
at the very least, the extra dollar will get you prompt service.

Loser poll:
When you get to a crosswalk at a busy Manhattan intersection, do you stand back and wait for the walk signal or do you push out into the intersection and try to do a well timed jaywalk? Even though I'm a super fast walker I always just wait for the light to change before crossing. There are always all of these people in front of me pushing into the intersection and getting in the way of traffic. Most of the time they have to wait for the light anyway, and even if they do manage to cross I just walk past them 30 seconds later anyways. I just figure, out of the tens of thousands of times in my life that I'm going to cross the street at busy Manhattan intersections, why would I play frogger every time?
So who waits for the light and who plays frogger?

Lechacal, I jaywalk but only when road is super clear
Posted by: more4less at September 11, 2009 2:29 PM
CG_ups, how R U feeling so far? didn't do the hot/cold buffet right?
Posted by: more4less at September 11, 2009 2:30 PM
The only streets I refuse to jaywalk on is 4th ave and also flatbush. I've seen people die there.
Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at September 11, 2009 2:32 PM
no horking! :) just a bit puffy feeling from eating a super bready slice o' sicilian pizza. luckily it was light on the cheese, basically a giant piece of bread smeared with tomato sauce.
Posted by: CG_ups at September 11, 2009 2:33 PM
Lech - Depends on the corner & the traffic. With those lagged lights for turns on avenues I usually wait. Almost everywhere else I frog.
Posted by: Arkady at September 11, 2009 2:33 PM
Biff, don't listen to the macheads... but the OS here is key, I'd wait til Win7 ships. Else you'd have to 'downgrade' at add'l cost to XP and you can't upgrade directly from XP to win7, you'd have to reformat and reinstall.
If you want to do something a little different and think macs are cute you could get a Sony Vaio, they're really attractive and well designed.
I've bought a lot of Dells in my time including recently a server, never had a problem.

When you get to a crosswalk at a busy Manhattan intersection, do you stand back and wait for the walk signal or do you push out into the intersection and try to do a well timed jaywalk?
actually, i purposefully stand in the bikeline if there is one. i do it a lot outside here at work on spring and prince street when i cross.

Posted by: Butterfly at September 11, 2009 2:35 PM
I agree w/ Denton. I have a Vaio & it's terrif. Would also wait until 7's here.
Posted by: Arkady at September 11, 2009 2:35 PM
And if I'm carrying a cat I always wait & cross very safely.
Posted by: Arkady at September 11, 2009 2:37 PM
I first read Denton's comment as "don't listen to the *smackheads*!!! I was all ready to be like, 'who's on smack??? what???" LOL. Silly illiterate me :)
Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at September 11, 2009 2:37 PM
Balls & Nose? Hmmm.... I should have copyrighted my concept when I had the chance. I also once told someone he couldn't couldn't get it up for a vacuum cleaner hose with the power turned on. I can't believe I would even say that but he was such an evil chauvinist pig and I was so not as kind and gentle as I am today :-).
Posted by: bxgrl at September 11, 2009 2:38 PM
Thanks Denton and Arkady. I guess I'll wait for Win7. Do you think it'll be available and in stores on October 22 or just released and I'll have to wait longer to get it?
Denton, do you use a Dell currently?
I'll look into the Vaio also.
Posted by: Biff Champion at September 11, 2009 2:39 PM
Early press says 7 is on schedule & supposedly bug-free.
Posted by: Arkady at September 11, 2009 2:42 PM
At last night's event I proposed that a certain brownstoner (semi)regular has a feline personality. The person in question is vain, proud, easily offended, preens, and doesn't seem to want to make friends with anyone, but also has moments of playfulness. A human cat so to speak.
Any guesses?

anyone else hate the san genarro festival? what's the big deal about a bunch of sausage carts from new jersey?
Posted by: dirty_hipster at September 11, 2009 2:43 PM
bxgrl, i used it earlier today (very early on in the OT) and gave you a shout out. :)
Posted by: CG_ups at September 11, 2009 2:43 PM
Given the build-up Biff, and how Windows 7 is being touted as the solution to all of Vista's problems, I've heard that stores are going to be stocked by the 10/22 release date. Why don't you give J&R a call and see what they say.
Posted by: CarrollGardened at September 11, 2009 2:44 PM
I'm looking forward to Win 7 but a friend is working on getting me a mac too. My idea of paradise :-)
Posted by: bxgrl at September 11, 2009 2:44 PM
So Arkady, does that mean it'll be in the computers and on the shelf on Oct 22?
Posted by: Biff Champion at September 11, 2009 2:44 PM
i actually like the san genarro festival. but then again im originally from jersey. it's very carnivalesque and trashy. if it was all historical and stuff it would be snorezville.

Yes, Biffy, according to David Pogue - The Times guy who is really a Mac person but has been positive about 7.

Posted by: CG_ups at September 11, 2009 2:53 PM
hint - it's not someone who hangs out on the OT.
CG Ups - I know it's not nice, but you'll totally agree with me when I say who. India House is good for drinks. Was there a couple of weeks ago.

Posted by: infinitejester at September 11, 2009 2:57 PM
carrollgardened, the surprise birthday party for my sister was awesome. she was totally surprised and the goth theme went over great. our brother showed up too, he's 19, and it was the first time i ever met him in my life. their father then drove us into manhattan (they live in weehawken nj right across the river) to see the Halloween II remake. after the movie we all went back to my apt in brooklyn. best part of the trip back to brooklyn was us putting worms on some woman who was fast asleep on the train. (gummy worms but they looked like REAL worms.. they were in our party goody bags). but some good two shoes on the train was giving us the stink eye when we were putting worms on this woman and he got up and took them off her and nudged her and pointed as us. so we booo'd him. somehow we missed the union street stop and wound up in the 30s somewhere! wtf? hahahah.
*rob*

ps. anyone remember the 30 rock where tina fey gets all mad and makes josh do the worm and his agent do the crab? heheh

anyone have any suggestions on what to do in nyc with two goth teenagers?

Lechacal, if you ever stroll along in your hood and "feel" like someone is giving you the evil eyes, you'll now have a good guess who it is and why
Posted by: more4less at September 11, 2009 3:07 PM
By the way, Lech, I don't buy into your feline profile - mine are always friendly & very funny & too silly to be vain.

"anyone have any suggestions on what to do in nyc with two goth teenagers?'
Green-Wood or Woodlawn cemeteries?
Posted by: etson at September 11, 2009 3:12 PM
pizza hut. lordy lordy.
WIn7 puter's will ship on the release date of win7.
CG, I currently have a Dell netbook running Linux Ubuntu, no probs, but to be truthful I haven't had a Dell laptop in at least three years. I could be wrong but I don't think Dell makes them these days anyway, most laptops come from Taiwan or similar places.
And that reminds me, if I were in the market for a laptop, I'd definitely look into Lenovo. That's the old IBM unit, now Chinese-owned.

goth tourists? St. Marks, LES, 8th Street, the usual.
Posted by: denton at September 11, 2009 3:15 PM
Biff, aside from HP, as Denton suggests, I've also heard great things about Lenovo laptops. A friend who used to work at IBM has a Lenovo and loves it.

Just pulling out the old cat stereotype. It's been many years since I've actually spent any time around a cat.
Posted by: lechacal at September 11, 2009 3:17 PM
denton, yeah i thought about that, but i think those are the places they normally visit and probably the only places they know OF nyc. i was thinking maybe showing them like creepy old houses, or interesting cemeteries or something that they normally wouldnt think about seeing or even know exist in nyc.
*rob*
Posted by: Butterfly at September 11, 2009 3:18 PM
DO NOTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT get Lenovo.
IBM laptops used to be super reliable and packed with processing power.
The current IBM Laptops are really not IBM ones but rather IBM brand slapped onto Lenovo computers.

Posted by: Biff Champion at September 11, 2009 3:34 PM
Biff, I wouldn't get too crazy either, after all there's the CPU, the RAM, and the HD. A lot in a laptop tho is ergonomics, not better or worse but what suits you. You might be better off stopping into J&R on the way home from Death Star (I suppose you didn't bike today) and check out the keyboards and stuff.
Posted by: denton at September 11, 2009 3:35 PM
Thanks denton. That's similar to what a techie just said to me who roamed past my office at the Death Star. I don't like spending lots of time researching and prefer to make a quick decision although now I'll wait for Windows 7 so I'll revisit this in a month or so.

also maybe the new museum in the east village? personally i hate it, but then i'm a geezer.
Posted by: CG_ups at September 11, 2009 3:41 PM
I like a milkshake with a burger. Goodburger makes a great shake.
I also push to the front of the line at a crosswlk and cut across at the slightest let up in traffic. However, as you all slould know, if you plan your route through Manhattan, you should navigate the streets and avenues in a zig zag so that you never get stuck at a light. :)

Posted by: Biff Champion at September 11, 2009 4:20 PM
Hey, who's going to cater the next big PLUSA affair?
Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at September 11, 2009 4:21 PM
WOOF!!! WOOF WOOF!!!
Posted by: lechacal at September 11, 2009 4:21 PM
m4l - You do that & you'll be catapulted out of here.
Posted by: Arkady at September 11, 2009 4:21 PM
Not to get catty, but I'm getting a bit tired of this. Let's talk about something else. How about Fashion Week?
Anybody been to see the shows on the catwalk?
Posted by: Biff Champion at September 11, 2009 4:22 PM
M4L, don't be catty.
Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at September 11, 2009 4:23 PM
What a bunch of scatter-brains...
Posted by: Arkady at September 11, 2009 4:23 PM
M4L, sounds like you need to take a stroll amongst the pussy willows :)
Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at September 11, 2009 4:24 PM
Cobble??? Where did you go? Cat got your tongue?
Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at September 11, 2009 4:26 PM
Does anyone else find this cathartic?
Posted by: CarrollGardened at September 11, 2009 4:26 PM
Ok, we're now repeating the same things. I could say I'm still entertained by all of this feline banter but I would be lion.
Posted by: Biff Champion at September 11, 2009 4:28 PM
holy crap m4l, he wants $10k for that thing. woah.
Posted by: CG_ups at September 11, 2009 4:28 PM
Dog-gone! Has everyone looked at that shelving thread. He needs some really scathing responses.
Posted by: Arkady at September 11, 2009 4:28 PM
i think a cat scratched a hole in the top of my head and took a dump on my brain.

A little catachresis is always stimulating.
Posted by: Arkady at September 11, 2009 4:30 PM
no need to pile on the guy. he's entitled to say how much he's looking to get. whether or not he gets it remains up in the air, but no need to kick a guy in the nuts when he's already down (and out $14k for shelves). yeeps.
Posted by: CG_ups at September 11, 2009 4:30 PM
I wonder is atlas shelving will make it in this post lehman world. $7K for a chest of drawers.

I wonder if the bartender was mad at me yesterday because I forgot to pay the tabby.

I confess to knowing absolute nothing about Atlas shelving, but $13,400 new seems, shall we say, a tad overpriced, and $10,000 used doesn't seem like much of a bargain either. Perhaps it's just because it's not my taste.

Yeah, but Lech has the QOTD over on the shelf thread.

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at September 11, 2009 4:42 PM
I would like to thank all the little people who typed endlessly and nonsensically along with me to get me to this mountain top of PLUSAdom. Without you, I'd be merely one hand clapping, one paw swiping, one feline hissing alone in the dark. You inspire me, you awe me, you give me a great feeling of fleas flitting around in my tummy. I love you, one and all. Thank you!
Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at September 11, 2009 4:45 PM

Posted by: infinitejester at September 11, 2009 4:49 PM

are there any MOTs that can explain shiksappeal? is it a real thing?
Posted by: CG_ups at September 11, 2009 4:53 PM
You need to pounce faster, Biff. When it comes to quips and puns, Arkady is the cat's meow.
Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at September 11, 2009 4:54 PM
But just by a whisker, Biffer.
Posted by: Arkady at September 11, 2009 4:55 PM
What is MOT?
Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at September 11, 2009 4:55 PM
CG_ups, a shiksa is a somewhat derogatory word for a non-Jewish female. So I assume that means someone with a lot of shiksappeal is a hot, non-Jewish female.
Posted by: Biff Champion at September 11, 2009 4:55 PM
OK, I'm back from stompping on 2 little kittens and I blame all this cat posts
Posted by: more4less at September 11, 2009 4:55 PM
A shiksa is someone who does not say, "No schtuppa without a chuppa!" - regardless of religious orientation.
Posted by: Arkady at September 11, 2009 4:57 PM
oh hmmm. darn that seinfeld. was trying to figure out if this guy at work hits on everyone or just me, though i suspect it's everyone. so i shouldn't take it personally, right?
Posted by: CG_ups at September 11, 2009 4:57 PM
don't hurt the kittens. it's not their fault. it's the cuckoos who love them.
[ducks]
JUST KIDDING!!! :)
Posted by: CG_ups at September 11, 2009 4:58 PM
OMG...I just remembered yelling out "2 DOLLA SUCKY FUCKY" at Biff from Kens' car window in the middle of Bk Heights. Good heavens! What is wrong with me???? (don't answer that folks!)
Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at September 11, 2009 5:00 PM
eh ignore me. late day getting creeped out. i'll ask more clearly in person at the next meetup. men are such confusing dogs sometimes. i'll leave it at that.
Posted by: CG_ups at September 11, 2009 5:00 PM
CG_ups, I find normally women don't take it personally if they find the guy cute. Otherwise, they get offended.
Posted by: Biff Champion at September 11, 2009 5:01 PM
No worries, CG...we are a bit cuckoo!
Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at September 11, 2009 5:02 PM
Snappy, I didn't even hear that. If I did, I would have gladly scraped up a couple of bucks (and given Kens the honour of course).
Posted by: Biff Champion at September 11, 2009 5:03 PM
I've got dibs on the person who buys that shelfing unit for $10K. I would like to sell that person my current residence, furniture, car,.... after I'm done, that CG_ups is next selling stuff to that person
Posted by: more4less at September 11, 2009 5:03 PM
Apparently one can get 5,000 sucky fuckies in Brooklyn Heights for the price of that shelving unit.
Posted by: Biff Champion at September 11, 2009 5:05 PM
ROFL Biff!
Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at September 11, 2009 5:05 PM
m4l - And we could sell him a bridge too.
Posted by: Arkady at September 11, 2009 5:06 PM
OK...the boat is in, the lines are soaking and it's after 5:00. We all know what that means!!!!
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at September 11, 2009 5:06 PM
This is a test. Banned.
Posted by: Arkady at September 11, 2009 5:07 PM
"CG_ups, I find normally women don't take it personally if they find the guy cute. Otherwise, they get offended."
So so so so true. So completely and utterly true. This could be a new law of thermodynamics or something.
Posted by: lechacal at September 11, 2009 5:10 PM
who got banned? what happened?
Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at September 11, 2009 5:10 PM
m4l, I thought you knew me better than that. That shelving is drop dead ugly and something quite similar should be available for about $1,000.
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at September 11, 2009 5:12 PM
Snappy. I'd written a response to m4l about the kitten stomping in which the word banned was used but it never posted so I wondered if there were a filter on now. But apparently there isn't.
Posted by: Arkady at September 11, 2009 5:12 PM
So when in the taxi that was driving me home last night - the driver had the weirdest mix CD playing. First song when I got in was some uber indian song. Second was Jay-Z big pimpin, 3rd was a celine dion song.
Posted by: dirty_hipster at September 11, 2009 5:13 PM
Lechacal, don't scare off the would-be sucker on the shelving thread. I would like to sell my pad to that person for 990k via hyping how it's under $1M and if he/she likes any of the bridges seen from the windows, I can do a 2 for 1 special
Posted by: more4less at September 11, 2009 5:14 PM
interesting. thanks for the male perspective. obvs i can't ask my colleagues bc then they'll ask who it is. :)

Lech - Equal & opposite reaction.

panjabi mc? bc beware the boys is like the best single ever.
Posted by: CG_ups at September 11, 2009 5:15 PM
Why did everyone get all shitty in on that shelving forum post??? It's one thing to say it in here, but damn...to trounce the man's sale items on the forum post itself is RUDE!!!
Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at September 11, 2009 5:16 PM
DH, it might be the driver allows his 2 kids and/or wife download songs from net and he simply ask "burn me a CD of the songs on the computer"
Posted by: more4less at September 11, 2009 5:16 PM
it wasn't indian hip hop - it was like something you would hear in a bollywood movie.
he was mad cool though - let me smoke a stogie in the car and knew my cross streets
Posted by: dirty_hipster at September 11, 2009 5:17 PM
Snappy - But it's funny & he does have someone sticking up for him. (Plus it sounds as if he's got enough egostrength to deal w/ a bunch of PLUSA crap.)
Posted by: Arkady at September 11, 2009 5:18 PM
"CG_ups, I find normally women don't take it personally if they find the guy cute. Otherwise, they get offended."
Biff, dare I ask which reaction you get from the shiksas you hit on?

"men are such confusing dogs sometimes. "
Just don't call me a bitch.
Posted by: denton at September 11, 2009 5:19 PM
snappy, you can start the blasting at CMU. CG_ups and I posted fairly innocent posts. CMU fired the 1st shot
Posted by: more4less at September 11, 2009 5:20 PM
DH - You remember the cab ride home last night? Bravo. I vaguely remember climbing up a light pole to get my pants at some point but other than that it's pretty fuzzy until 6 am when I woke up in the back yard clutching some bail bondsman's business card.
Posted by: lechacal at September 11, 2009 5:20 PM
Lechacal's statement was funny, and true especially in regards to putting a cheap as poster in an expensive frame. Jester was RUDE!
Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at September 11, 2009 5:20 PM
i agree snappy, it went to jerktown pretty quickly in there.
Posted by: CG_ups at September 11, 2009 5:20 PM
I'm with Snappy. I feel bad for the guy trying to sell the shelves - he's entitled to post on the Forum.
(I mean, personally I think they're really ugly and astronomically overpriced, and totally agree with lechacal's comments.)
I bet shillstoner knows and understands what they are though.
Posted by: CarrollGardened at September 11, 2009 5:22 PM
jester was indeed a very bad boy.
Posted by: CG_ups at September 11, 2009 5:22 PM
I hadn't seen Jester's. I actually thought Lechacal's was Rob except spelling, grammar & punctuation were too good.
Posted by: Arkady at September 11, 2009 5:23 PM
They gotta be kidding with those shelves... I went to the 'build your own' section, I clicked 'shelf standard', and I get $522 for a $6 piece of metal! I think I'm gonna hate on them now :-)
Posted by: denton at September 11, 2009 5:24 PM
That was uncivilized.
Posted by: cobblehiller at September 11, 2009 5:25 PM
Jester, if the dude does show up and wants a fight despite you apologizing, I got your back dude.
Posted by: more4less at September 11, 2009 5:25 PM
"Biff, dare I ask which reaction you get from the shiksas you hit on?"
Well, I don't make it a point of hitting on shiksas, or anyone else for that matter, these days. The closest thing was me confessing to having a mancrush on DeLepp. So I suppose you would have to ask him for his reaction.
Posted by: Biff Champion at September 11, 2009 5:26 PM
Denton, a snarky way to counter the shelving post is you reposting pic's of your custom shelving in your house and mentioning rough cost in the spirit of info sharing
Posted by: more4less at September 11, 2009 5:27 PM
I 2nd you CGar. What's this mob mentality that's taking over here?

see the side-effects of the CAT Posts now? it makes many of us go insane. Those poor kittens. It wasn't their fault
Posted by: more4less at September 11, 2009 5:31 PM
someone wants you to be BANNED m4l. tread lightly.
Posted by: CG_ups at September 11, 2009 5:34 PM
We were building up a kitty of good karma. Not quite up to the catnip/herb day but a good couple of claws at it.
Posted by: Arkady at September 11, 2009 5:34 PM
I would think cats would make anyone go insane, that is, of course, EXCEPT for the cat that lives with cobble, BH, Chad, Chet, the CGar-dog and me.
Posted by: CarrollGardened at September 11, 2009 5:35 PM
CG_ups, really? that person must be an idiot if they thought I was serious with stomping on kittens
Posted by: more4less at September 11, 2009 5:35 PM
LOL Arkady :) I loved that thread.
Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at September 11, 2009 5:36 PM
I'm not so sure about that, CGar, but she is staying the hell out of this and is napping quietly on the bed right now. [Smart girl that she is...]
Posted by: cobblehiller at September 11, 2009 5:38 PM

I kinda think sometimes of us regulars is a little much. while it's shocking that some shelves will cost 13k, there is obvi a market for it. some people would probably think it's asinine to pay over a million dollars for an old fixer upper rowhouse as well. different strokes my friends.
