Happy Happy thoughts this morning everyone!

Ya'll see the article about Amy Sohn today?

http://www.nytimes.com/2009/09/10/garden/10sohn.html

The couple is considering having a second child, in which case they will need a larger apartment and will most likely move to the south Slope or Windsor Terrace, a familiar migration, Ms. Sohn said. “As you have more children and life gets more expensive,” she explained, “you get priced out and move south.”

Kens, you sound like Mr. Rourke from Fantasy Island.

Please Amy Sohn, don't move to WT or South Slope. Keep going South, like New Jersey, where you belong. In the endless "branding"of Brooklyn, few have disgraced the Brooklyn name than Amy Sohn. Like you don't have the money and -have- to move South.

Gross.

They love the radiators!

From the Brooklyn Lit schedule Sunday...

12:00 p.m. Faux Society. Amy Sohn (Prospect Park West), Robert Dunn (Meet the Annas) and Laura Albert (Sarah) talk about the real people and fictional characters who inhabit the societies represented in their work. Moderated by Alisa Valdes-Rodriguez.

Posted by: denton at September 10, 2009 9:32 AM

Denton,

I'm having a wee bit of trouble picturing Amy Sohn dealing with a gut reno of a sagging Greenwood Heights frame and getting her veggies at the CSA.

Oh, sorry. I'll stop talking house on the OT.

Posted by: slopefarm at September 10, 2009 9:32 AM

I saw a woman on the train this morning who looked like Sa...... nevermind.

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT

Brownstoner drinks, tonight, at the Brooklyn Inn. Give a shout if you think you can make it.

Posted by: lechacal at September 10, 2009 9:35 AM

DH - Were you rocking the MC Hawking on your commute this morning?

Posted by: lechacal at September 10, 2009 9:36 AM

Being the good Northerner I am, I like the house cool and usually have the A/C on. For the limited amount of summer she spends at home, Mrs. C ends up freezing and needing a blanket. Do all women feel the cold more than men? Is it due to the fact I'm 180 pounds and she's around 115?

Does anybody else engage in air conditioning wars during the summer with their other halves and/or kids (and/or pets)?

Posted by: Biff Champion at September 10, 2009 9:37 AM

Dee Boys, Boss, Dee Boys.

Where are the young ones at? Any here?

Posted by: Couger at September 10, 2009 9:39 AM

My sister, who is very petite (maybe 105 pounds soaking wet) always battles her kids and other half, who is 6'4" and 250 pounds to keep down the A/C.

So in her house, the A/C war is 3 to 1 against her, so she's always wearing an extra layer in the summer. She said she's the only person she knows of who is actually looking forward to menopause and getting hot flashes!

Posted by: Biff Champion at September 10, 2009 9:40 AM

Couger is funny, albeit a bit lacking in the spelling department.

Posted by: Biff Champion at September 10, 2009 9:41 AM

Haha Lech - unfortunately i got home late last night and didn't get a chance to update the ipod. I'll be busting out mad rhymes tomorrow mornign for sure.

Posted by: dirty_hipster at September 10, 2009 9:41 AM

Biff;

This is a constant issue between Mrs. Benson and me, but the situation is the opposite of yours. I have a high tolerance for heat and could almost do without AC. My wife, on the other hand, would run the AC until October. She always feels hot.

Posted by: benson at September 10, 2009 9:43 AM

Let's not get into another tedious gender war today. Biff, you're probably offending someone with the air conditioning discussion. How about a show of hands for who is going to be at the Inn tonight?

Posted by: lechacal at September 10, 2009 9:47 AM

Sorry lech - no can do re: Inn - it's also the start of football season!

Posted by: dirty_hipster at September 10, 2009 9:48 AM

Hola peoples! Lehcacal, I'm in!

I hate a.c. and only use it when my asthma is threatening to kill me.

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at September 10, 2009 9:48 AM

I might be able to drop by to Brooklyn Inn but after 8. Have the NHS orientation to go to tonight. Anyone else sign up for the classes?

Posted by: Kensingtonian at September 10, 2009 9:48 AM

I wish I could tolerate the heat. I would love to be more green and just open the windows and be happy with a nice breeze. I try not to rely on the A/C too much. I love the fall, when the breeze is cooler and I can air out the joint better.

I never understood when people would complain about temperatures in the 70s in NYC in the summer and then say it was a beautiful day when it's in the mid-90s and humidity is 98%. Who are these people? I'm about to pass out from the heat and they're lovin' it. I feel sorry for the ortho Jews in NYC in August with their black suits and hats on.

Posted by: Biff Champion at September 10, 2009 9:49 AM

Biff,
While I'm a cold person at heart. My body is HOT!
Btw - How old, or should I say young are you?

Biffy, we got another one who thinks you're dreamy.

Couger, he is not a cougee material unless you're a Puma.

Wait...where is the Brooklyn Inn? Can I get there via bus?

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at September 10, 2009 9:52 AM

Lech, I'm in for tonight. If you don't see me around here tomorrow, send out the search party. Mrs. C. should be the prime suspect.

What time will you be there?

Posted by: Biff Champion at September 10, 2009 9:53 AM

It's a yes for me for the Inn.

Posted by: jessibaby at September 10, 2009 9:53 AM

My husband and I are pretty much equally match temperature wise (I have some padding).

What I can't fathom for the life of me are the women who wear wigs in the summer!!! I can't even stand to take my hair out of a ponytail because of it sticking to my neck in the humidity. I can't fathom how they can wear a wig.

This is going to sound so gross but every time I see them I immediately think of the stench when they go home and take it off after sweating in it all day.

Arghhhh...I can't!

It's worse than that; I'm not cougee material unless you're dead.

"Biff, am sure Mrs C and your sis will appreciate the shout out with weight deetz.."

Hmmm, so would posting the results of their last pap smear be considered TMI?

Posted by: Biff Champion at September 10, 2009 10:04 AM

Brooklyn Inn is on Bergen and Hoyt. It's a short hike from the atlantic terminal trains and 1 block from the F/G at Bergen street.

Biff - maybe you're hot and she's cold b/c you're a bit more hirsuite(sp?) and she is not. :)

Snappy - not sure about tonight. Will be out but may stop by on my way home. Can't find my ipod in my bag though, and am worried that I lost it so may rush home to hopefully find it sitting on the table. I hate that! Will worry periodically through the day. sigh.

Posted by: CG_ups at September 10, 2009 10:04 AM

I've come to believe that tolerance for heat is part "psychological conditioning".

I'm always amazed when you look at photos of NY in the 20's,including Coney Island. Folks are dressed in a suit, and no one looks like they are sweating it. On the other hand, folks wear shorts and tank tops today, and they look exasperated.

BTW, here is another "Benson trademark": I almost NEVER wear shorts. I put on shorts perhaps once or twice a year, when I go to my brother's shore house. You will never see me walking around Park Slope in shorts.

My reason is simple: many people look gross in shorts. I wish they would look at themselves in the mirror before they step out of the house. How could I advise them not to wear shorts, if I don't do the same?

I know, I'm strange.

Posted by: benson at September 10, 2009 10:05 AM

All right... I'll check back in later for the details of tonight. Later all!

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at September 10, 2009 10:10 AM

benson, I know exactly what you mean but I think there must be something to be said for our bodies adjusting to different weather (blood thinning and thickening, perhaps?)

I remember having no A/C at all growing up and have no recollection of problems sleeping due to the heat (yes, it does get very hot even in Toronto in the summer). I think many of us/our bodies have unfortunately come to rely on A/C and have a lower tolerance for heat. I'm trying to wean myself off the A/C by turning it on less, setting it at a higher temp, etc.

Posted by: Biff Champion at September 10, 2009 10:11 AM

I rarely turn the a/c on, it's got to be 85 and humid. Sometimes Pork Slap comes home and tells me it's cooler outside than in the apartment.

Posted by: bitter retort at September 10, 2009 10:12 AM

Have to run errands today. Maybe I'll check back in later.

Play nice!

Posted by: TownhouseLady at September 10, 2009 10:13 AM

A/C is great - but hasn't been necessary this summer. There was maybe a week where I wished I wasn't too lazy to put mine in. Other than that, fans and open windows have been sufficient.

Posted by: dirty_hipster at September 10, 2009 10:13 AM

Bitter, your presence alone makes any place a little bit cooler.

Posted by: Biff Champion at September 10, 2009 10:14 AM

many people DO look gross in shorts and thank god summer is almost over. there was nothing grosser looking then men in very short shorts this year. ick. SO femme.

i like it to be as cold as possible. i love the summer because i love the smell and feel of air conditioning. i sorta hate the in between times when it's too cool for AC but still hot and uncomfortable. like today.

Posted by: bitter retort at September 10, 2009 10:17 AM

I prefer no a/c - used it about a week this summer. What I don't like is when people keep the house colder in the summer than they tolerate in the winter before turning the heat on.
I'm planning to make it this evening - may have a problem but hope not.

Posted by: Arkady at September 10, 2009 10:19 AM

Posted by: Butterfly at September 10, 2009 10:23 AM

My different bfs tolerate the heat /cold differently but there doesn't seem to be any racial or geographic stereotype. I've had a few from the hottest areas in the world but I've never had anyone from Alaska. :)

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at September 10, 2009 10:23 AM

Denton, does that mean you're buying a few beers for Rob ;)

Posted by: jessibaby at September 10, 2009 10:23 AM

Benson:
I think the weather has gotten worse in the NYC area. I remmember summers being hot, but not as humid and gross and stifling as they are now.

Posted by: gemini10 at September 10, 2009 10:25 AM

I can see Alaska from my house, and we never use aircon there. Todd runs hotter than most [wink], but I won't allow it. I wear the pants in my family [wink].

Posted by: dirty_hipster at September 10, 2009 10:28 AM

gemini10, how long is your perspective??? If you lived here in "brownstone times" with these layer upon layers of Victorian clothes I think you'd say differently. These days when people like yourself run around scantily clad they have a different perspective on temperature. :)

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at September 10, 2009 10:28 AM

I'm sure you're right, denton.

BH and I have dinner plans with an old friend from out of town. That part won't change, my current feeling might — with time. I think I'm off 'Stoner events awhile.

Posted by: cobblehiller at September 10, 2009 10:29 AM

"I remember having no A/C at all growing up and have no recollection of problems sleeping due to the heat (yes, it does get very hot even in Toronto in the summer)."

Biff, I remember growing up in NY in the mid-1960s during a terrible heat wave and drought, and being on the top floor of a six story walk-up, with one window overlooking an airshaft. Definitely had trouble sleeping!

Altho Mrs. D is much smaller than me, we're about the same tolerance, we like it cool at night, altho we can do without during the day for the most part.

Mrs D is Latina, and used to have a higher heat tolerance than me, we when she gave birth to da kid on American soil, she seemed to have become a true gringa and we became about the same.

Posted by: denton at September 10, 2009 10:30 AM

"Denton, does that mean you're buying a few beers for Rob ;)"

I'd be happy to buy him a forty :-)

Posted by: denton at September 10, 2009 10:31 AM

Gemini;

Funny, but my feeling is just the opposite. It seems to me that summers were hotter when I was a kid. For instance, I remember August being one, long hot month. Now it seems to me that the hot weather breaks around mid-August.

Did you just move into the lower number streets between 4th and 5th Ave? We must be neighbors then!! I live right across from Washington/JJ Byrne Park.

Posted by: benson at September 10, 2009 10:32 AM

cobble...how about next week????

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at September 10, 2009 10:32 AM

I grew up in DC w/o a/c & it was tolerable if you had a decent fan. But kids have different sensibilities from adults.

Posted by: Arkady at September 10, 2009 10:34 AM

Sorry folks, I need to pass on tonight's gathering. I know how many strings lechacal and benson had to pull to arrange for Sarah P's appearance. Sorry to miss it (although that winking is driving me crazy). Bx, I hope you've got some good cornermen(cornerpersons? -- it's a boxing term) if you go and things get nasty.

Posted by: slopefarm at September 10, 2009 10:36 AM

I would make the observation that when I get out of the train at Fulton Park and walk up Stuyvesant Ave, it is definitely cooler there than where I entered the train in Manhattan. The lack of heavy traffic, towering buildings and the heavy tree coverage in Brooklyn makes a huge difference.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at September 10, 2009 10:36 AM

Wife turns on A/C all the time vs. me viewing it's not necessary most of the time (but I keep opinion that to myself). Young son sweats all the time though

Posted by: more4less at September 10, 2009 10:37 AM

There's no worse place to live in NYC than Chinatown during a heatwave, especially when your room has no window and is in a 6th floor walk up.

Posted by: dirty_hipster at September 10, 2009 10:40 AM

The Champettes never have A/C on in their rooms. They're happy with a fan going at most, but we haven't used even that this year - then again, they weren't here for the hottest days. They also like sleeping only in their tighty whities, so that helps.

What about the "grown ups" here? Silk pajamas? Flannel pjs? Au naturel? I'm usually in boxers and a tee, but the tee comes off almost immediately (because I'm warm, not because Mrs. C rips it off). I don't use covers either in the summer.

Posted by: Biff Champion at September 10, 2009 10:40 AM

Posted by: more4less at September 10, 2009 10:44 AM

Gemini;

I' ve lived there for 4.5 years.

The park is really a nice place: chock full of kids and dogs! My favorite place is Cafe Regular, on 11th Street between 4th and 5th. It's bit far away, but it is worth the schlepp because they have the best coffee in Brooklyn, IMHO. I'm not crazy about the crowd that hangs out there, but then again, I really don't fit into the PS scene all that well anyway.

I suppose it's a bit heretical for me to go to Cafe Regular, as one of my uncles is a partner in the "Brooklyn Bread" place on 5th Ave and 6th Street.

"DH, no window? were you in a rooming house?"

it was a super old tenament - i had to walk through an internal alley to a staircase in the back (which was outdoors) - i did have a window, but it was super small and overlooked the staircase. When opened, stagnant air and rotting fish would waft in. Ah, the wonders of downtown living!

Does anybody remember "The Patty Duke Show"???

I liked the show, but always felt that there was something incongruous about it. The show was supposed to be set in Brooklyn Heights, and they did sometimes include outdoor shots from the Promenade. Yet Patty's house was a typical 1960's suburban ranch home straight out of Middle America. It was just weird.

Posted by: benson at September 10, 2009 11:52 AM

Biff, when I say CPA - it means someone whose certification is still active. So unless you've been keeping up with the annual courses, your CPA is in hybernation mode

Legion, I just called the aquarium and they're all on board. While the seals, jelly fish and sharks were unanimous in their support, it was difficult getting the octopus to agree, but with a little arm twisting (ok a lot, he does have 8 of them, after all), he consented.

Posted by: CarrollGardened at September 10, 2009 1:15 PM

Benson - it's more of just frustration with the cost of living in the city and salaries being stagnant. the other night, after a quick scan of jobs in my industry around the country - i noticed i could move somewhere where my salary would remain the same and i could decrease my housing costs significantly. of course, i have family here and other extraordinary circumstances that will make it hard to leave (plus, i like it here). but sometimes seeing what is out there makes you question whether NYC is the end all.

Tsampa in the East Village also looks good.

DH, you should seriously consider going to Asia. You have very transferrable skills and would do very well there. You're also young and mobile enough and without too many attachments keeping you here, other than your immediate family of course. The current economy also might make it a smart move at this time. I have a number of friends who did the ex-pat thing in Hong Kong, Singapore, Tokyo, etc. who loved it. I'm sure DIBS would concur.

(Of course, selfishly, it would also give me another friend there and a reason to go visit!)

Posted by: Biff Champion at September 10, 2009 1:28 PM

DH - I went through that three years ago. In January 2007 I moved up to Connecticut and bought a beautiful 5000 sf old brick home on an acre and a half in a leafy suburb. Took a job as an in-house lawyer for an insurance company, working much fewer hours for pretty much the same pay. Bought a grill and some deck chairs and other trappings of suburban life. And within 7 short months we had sold the house and moved back to Park Slope and I took my old job back.

I'm still seriously considering a move to Vermont, but that's more of a long-term project.

DH;

I think we all go through that from time to time. The only way to figure it out is to try another locale. In my case, it was the Bay Area for a couple of years. I came back. In my case, the prospects for engineering are DECIDEDLY better outside of NYC. Virtually everyone I know from college lives in areas like NC, CA, and parts of NJ. I decided to come back, and knew the career hit I would be taking in doing so.

Only you can figure it out for yourself. My only advice would be that if you decide to try out a different place, rent first.

Made it as far as the Boston 'burbs (renting only, thankfully) with the intention of heading to Burlington after a year. After 3 months (living on the edge of a nature preserve, mind you), I couldn't wait to get back to Brooklyn, and I had to get my fix from Law & Order re-runs!

In other words, as my posting on the blog increases, so does the positive performance of The Death Star. As I start focussing on work, you can be assured that The Death Star will begin to falter.

Posted by: Biff Champion at September 10, 2009 1:47 PM

DH, don't let the banker give you false hope. Expat gigs are for big front office rev folks or big back office exec. Unfortunately for us lowly back-office worker bee number crunchers, expat gigs are a pipe dream. Only angle is if somehow you got yourself onto some special assignment to implement some financial system thingy (ie conversion to IFRS)

Posted by: more4less at September 10, 2009 1:48 PM

jester, I hope you'll forgive me for the Law & Order re-runs! You going tonight?

lechacal how were you able to go inhouse and make the same coin?

Posted by: bitter_bubble_buyer at September 10, 2009 1:49 PM

C Gar- you just got home and you're going out again??! No wonder I turned to others. And don't expect me or the dog to wait up, either. (note to self: Call cobble so she can commiserate with me).

"Expert - You asked about URL companies. I use NewTek"
Thanks, Ark. Will check them out.

I asked this question late in yesterday's OT. I'll ask again.
Anyone have a website? Who hosts it? Are you happy with them?

Doing some research now. Anyone familiar with FatCow for hosting?

Posted by: Expert Textpert at September 10, 2009 1:51 PM

DH;

Since you are a CPA, have you ever considered opening your own business? I have a friend who opened his own accounting firm, geared towards small businesses, and he does very well. He then branched out into managing small properties, like meddical offices.

Posted by: benson at September 10, 2009 1:52 PM

bxgrl, you're a fine one to talk! Should we discuss your professions of love for Snark here, or wait for counseling?

Posted by: CarrollGardened at September 10, 2009 1:53 PM

M4L, admittedly, the ex-pats to whom I referred do fall into the "big front office rev folks or big back office exec" category, but I would have to think all levels of accounting jobs are in demand in most places, especially somewhere like China, with such great potential for economic expansion. I can't say this with certainty, but would definitely pursue it if I was in DH's position.

Posted by: Biff Champion at September 10, 2009 1:53 PM

Expert, a lot of people I know are happy with GoDaddy. I've used GoDaddy in the past as well but not to create and host anything professional.

Posted by: Kensingtonian at September 10, 2009 1:53 PM

well - thanks all for your advice and listening to my semi-annual 'my life sucks' tirade. not surprisingly your responses were alot more useful than my friends who say 'yo bro, nyc is where it's at!!"

now back to our regularly scheduled programming.

Posted by: dirty_hipster at September 10, 2009 1:55 PM

Oh, sure, Kens, now you post!

Posted by: CarrollGardened at September 10, 2009 1:56 PM

Biff, tons of Asian talent is repatrioting back home. Tons of home grown talent too. back office accounts are not high paying gigs. language hurdle. Not saying it's impossible but just want to "keep it real" for my boy DH. BTW, not sure if DH would like the warm beer that's popular in some of the spots in China

Posted by: more4less at September 10, 2009 1:57 PM

DH, I think you need to discuss this over a Jameson shot and can of Pork Slap tonight.

CGar, no worries, I watched L & O: Criminal Intent the other night, two of 'em back-to-back, they were pretty good. Still hate the regular show though.

Yeah, I'll be there, I love bars set on quiet residential streets. Such ambience. Might have to go back to my policy of only two at B'stoner gatherings though.

Posted by: Biff Champion at September 10, 2009 2:02 PM

Kens,
No to GoDaddy (bad reviews).
Now if it was Who's Your Daddy, I might be interested.

Posted by: Expert Textpert at September 10, 2009 2:02 PM

Benson - that's definitely a goal down the line once I gain some more industry experience. I would need to have my sh*t together if I hoped to do something like that in NYC, as it's a big pond with alot of big fish. Another reason why moving to other cities is more appealing, as it might be easier to find a little niche.

I can believe that lots of Asian folks are headed back home.

I work for a Japanese company that does alot of business in both the US and SE Asia. We are seeing no pickup in economic activity in the US, at least so far. On the other hand, business in China is really picking up again. Their stimulus program seems to have worked more effectively (or, at least, more quickly) than ours.

It's getting such that the US office is almost completely "off the radar" to the folks in Tokyo. They are totally focused on our Chinese and SE Asian offices.

herk, are you going to Brooklyn Inn tonight?

Lechacal, who has confirmed so far?

Posted by: Biff Champion at September 10, 2009 3:02 PM

My rant of the day:

I'm sure Mr. B has noticed that there are 300 some comments in the OT today, 3 for the COTD and less than 20 for the HOTD.

Even a thread about Park Slope garnered less than 30 comments.

This website has become nothing but a jerk off session for a bunch of people who should be talking over gmail chat.

No offense, but I'm sure Mr. B ain't pleased.

I could contribute more I suppose and not be a hypocrite, but the posts seem less and less interesting and the commentary is so sparse that it's like talking to oneself on half the threads.

Any suggestions or are you all fine to take this website down the tubes?

Posted by: 11217 at September 10, 2009 3:03 PM

K I am back! wooooooosssaaaaaaaa wooooooosaaaaaaaaa

Question #1 - How old are you?

It's in my profile and will be that age for 3 more weeks

Quesiton #2 - Would you mind if a woman paid for the date?

I am an old fashioned type but if it's a cougar/cougee relationship then probably wouldn't

Question #3 - At the end of our date, how will you make me purr?

I do work a toy company

11217 come out tonight to Brooklyn Inn.

I kind of think you're right but there has been a bunch of very controversial topics recently and not that much real estate porn so maybe that's why. I mean, if you look over at the forum threads, people are still asking and giving great advice.

I found a couple of great guys to put in bid to redo our building lobby and most likely we found the one that we're going to hire. Herki, I call Martin as per your recommendation but he came down, took measurements and disappeared and never put in a bid. what gives?

Posted by: Kensingtonian at September 10, 2009 3:08 PM

Darn, I was off the mark with the lyrics. It's more like:

"Life is a Cabaret, old chum, Come to the Cabaret."

Posted by: Biff Champion at September 10, 2009 3:08 PM

11217, Mr. B announced that there are 1,500 Twitter followers as of yesterday. I hardly think that we're taking this site down the tubes. Why don't put on your blonde wig and slink back under your rock.

just catching up. SUCH A busy day. ..it's a lot cooler being a failure career and relationship wise in nyc than almost anywhere else in the country tho dipster! that's how i look at it! hahah. it's also more justifiable. people always say people come to nyc to make it big and make money, but it's equally one of the best places to be if you just wanna coast and be insignificant and live life with more of an external locus of control whereas your failures really are not your own, it's just that you are surrounded by too many people trying to be the greatest.

You know, I hate to say "I told you so", but I knew where that Billyburg triangle story was going to go the minute I saw it. Here is what I posted when I first saw it this morning:

"Such are the fruits of NYC's political system that still thrives on a toxic combination of overweaning government and a racial/ethnic spoils system"

With the emergence of "post-ethnic" NYC in the Bloomberg era, this is not as prevalent as in the past, but at one time, this was ALL NYC politics was about, and it still lingers in some quarters.

My grandmother and uncle lived in a housing project in Canarsie for 39 years. The project was divided between two ethnic groups that shall go nameless, and my folks belonged to neither. When my grandmother and uncle decided to move out, they merely informed the NYCHA. They were visited by a member of one group, who asked why they were not given a heads-up, so that "we could make sure that we got one of our own in here".

Posted by: benson at September 10, 2009 3:27 PM

I've lost track of everyone who has confirmed. A probably incomplete list is:

- Benson
- beoch
- bitter retort
- [infinite jester?]
- C-Gar
- maybe CG ups depending on some stuff
- Arkady I think

It's with an 'E'!!!
'E' for Eager

Pretty good today. Had an iffy moment in the meat section at BJ's but overall much better. Thanks CGar.

The cats are going bonkers from the blowing wind whipping in through the windows. They're tearing around like crazy doing that "I must be in the other room right.....NOW!" routines replete with ears back, sideways jumping runs, tails all puffy. It's insanity.

Herki, thanks. We will probably go with another person but wouldn't hurt to hear from Martin and see how much he priced the job at. He seemed like a great guy though.

If you're talking about the beer, then I will answer with a resounding "yes".

If you're talking about your other half, while I do think he's a great guy, I can't say I'm mancrushing on him, valid driver's license or not.

CG ups, BTW, you seem like you know your way around the kitchen. Why not pick up extra dough as a private chef? You will probably like it and it's a nice chunk of supplemental income.

I read a story (NY Times?) a while ago how a chef was hosting private dinner parties at her house and charging like $80 bucks or so for a 3-4 course dinners for 12 people or so and had very good success doing it.

You might even have clients set up from PLUSAs salivating over your food already.

I can't lie anymore, I must be Jewish. I was out shopping for my world famous Kosher Cholent and Raisin Farfel Kugel. I thought I might make a Tsimmes Salad. And, of course, we'll have some chopped liver and gifilte fish on hand.

Who's bringing the Manishevitz?

home made parmesan and rosemary popovers
homemade cured salmon (been dying to try cooking that) with rye toasts and garnishes

One of my old bosses was Kosher and his father-in-law also worked in the office.

Whenever his FIL was away he'd get a shrimp salad sandwich for lunch. EVERY TIME! He even swore me to secrecy. You can NEVER tell him!

Story is he didn't grow up in a Kosher household and had to adapt to it once he got married. Poor thing would always look SO guilty when he was eating it too.

rob, do you have a bike? if so might I recommend the "bike path of evil" that is Bergen street, and leads directly to the Inn (and affords you several other drinking options along the way).

Why all the Jewish jokes?

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at September 10, 2009 5:07 PM

I got a bit tipsy at Ceol one summer day, started walking home. I strolled through the projects - some Hispanic woman began walking next to me, yelling in my ear. A few of her friends tagged along but I totally ignored them. I was blasting music on my headphones and wearing a suit jacket 9it wasn't very warm out). Eventually she gave up as I never even ackowledged her.

dh, I have been to the Carlyle. That bar is a beauty and arguably more intimate than King Cole. The lighting is a lot different.

Speaking of the Carlyle, a friend in Buck's County bought Bobby Short's sofa at auction after he died. I didn't see the attraction to a used sofa except maybe one that belonged to a historical figure from the past.
