I know I'm going to get shot for this but Sarah Palin had a coherent op-ed in today's WSJ.

Posted by: DeLepp at September 9, 2009 9:24 AM

yay back to school! i was sort of worried id have to deal with the heathens on the train today since i take a later train to work now, but there were no kids on the train. tho i dont remember last year if i saw many kids on the R train in the morning anyway. when i used to take the 1 train i used to want to slit my wrists on it.

and what is up with this!?
on the news this morning they were talking about the NYC math reagents and how students only need to score 43% to pass. ummm :-/ that is just plain pathetic and sad. if you only need 43 percent right on a multiple choice exam, clearly you can just get all the super super questions right (and im sure there are many of those) and then guess the rest. if you can't score 43 percent that way you seriously are beyond dumb.

DeLepp - is she naked?

Posted by: dirty_hipster at September 9, 2009 9:25 AM

something tells me that sarah palin has one of those early 90's style V-cropped bushes.

(sorry for people eating breakfast)
*rob*

Posted by: Butterfly at September 9, 2009 9:28 AM

DH, still banking on her to make a wrong decision which yields a naked spread?

dh & fly, u both R warped!

as someone so eloquently pointed out last time, she looks like the hot librarian in a porno.

Posted by: dirty_hipster at September 9, 2009 9:32 AM

If your writing is coherent, thank an editor.

Posted by: Arkady at September 9, 2009 9:36 AM

Coherent (and obviously NOT written by her), but still pushing the same misinformation and spin. "Death Panels", again? Considering there is no government plan yet, where does she get her facts from? Answer: she has none, only right wind talking points, conjecture and a fair bit of fearmongering on her own (after accusing the democrats of it).

Posted by: bxgrl at September 9, 2009 9:37 AM

bxgrl - Great typo - right wind!

Posted by: Arkady at September 9, 2009 9:38 AM

what is the fascination with Sarah Palin?

Posted by: the chicken at September 9, 2009 9:39 AM

"If your writing is coherent, thank an editor."

I was just wondering how much 'help' she had in writing that. Or am I just being a cynical. Wait, don't answer that.

Posted by: cobblehiller at September 9, 2009 9:39 AM

Arkady, my writing is usually INcoherent, so who do I blame?

Posted by: more4less at September 9, 2009 9:41 AM

I'll bet more people understand Palin's op-ed than what has been put forth in the healthcare plan. Just like the evidence for WMD(which no one in the senate nor house cared to read except for one senator from vermont), the plan needs to be made coherent.

Posted by: DeLepp at September 9, 2009 9:44 AM

Posted by: cobblehiller at September 9, 2009 9:48 AM

Hey loser, you back from PTown?

Posted by: cobblehiller at September 9, 2009 9:49 AM

I was dating a woman around the time of the Pres. Ele. Whenever she mentioned Sarah Palin, she would get this stunned, far-away look in her eyes, just absolutely HATING her.

Never seen someone make so many NYC women so angry.

Posted by: infinitejester at September 9, 2009 9:50 AM

Cobble, my parents dont speak much Ngalish at all so someone is to be blamed

Posted by: more4less at September 9, 2009 9:53 AM

No doubt IJ

I don't understand why people think she is not intelligent. Poor public speaker? Sure. Bad at playing the 'average girl' roll in the election - probably. Regardless, she was a candidate for VP of the United States.

Posted by: dirty_hipster at September 9, 2009 9:55 AM

DIBS, were your eyes fully fed at the beach?

Posted by: more4less at September 9, 2009 9:55 AM

Yeah, mentioning Sarah Palin around liberal women is always good for a few laughs. It's like giving peanut butter to a dog. Predictable and kind of funny reaction.

Posted by: lechacal at September 9, 2009 9:55 AM

Yes- you need 'em when Palin is talking. She's never been one to let a fact get in the way of a lie.

Posted by: bxgrl at September 9, 2009 9:58 AM

"Regardless, she was a candidate for VP of the United States."

Even McCain realized his mistake, too late, but he got it.

Posted by: cobblehiller at September 9, 2009 9:58 AM

M4L, it was a JOKE dear.

It's a typical cliche remark that people make. As in: 'I have X problem, I blame my parents.'

Posted by: cobblehiller at September 9, 2009 9:59 AM

I found watching Palin to be totally fascinating. Like an SNL skit gone wild. [Obviously, I would have had to off myself if The Doddering Old Man and the Naughty Librarian won, though.]

" It's like giving peanut butter to a dog. Predictable and kind of funny reaction."

hahaha too funny

Posted by: dirty_hipster at September 9, 2009 10:03 AM

Its no surprise that liberal women, or really any women of any political stripe who understand the institutional/societal difficulties facing women attempting to reach high office, would feel angry and burned by Sarah Palin, who seems to have no qualifications for the jobs she seeks and who shows no curiosity about the world and its denizens. It would be far more surprising if this was not the case. It does go to show you how much looks count for in politics.

Posted by: wasder at September 9, 2009 10:04 AM

Hi folks;

Palin fever over?

In yesterday's thread about the dad lending his daughters the full amount on a $600,000 PS condo, some folks were all over me. This morning, I realized that I should have just quoted ole Billy Shakespeare, who had this to say on the matter:

"Neither a borrower nor a lender be;
For loan oft loses both itself and friend,
And borrowing dulls the edge of husbandry.
This above all: to thine own self be true,
And it must follow, as the night the day,
Thou canst not then be false to any man."

This is from Act 1 of Hamlet, in which Polonius is giving advice to his son, as he is set to depart for his education.

Posted by: benson at September 9, 2009 10:04 AM

Would you men really like to know what upsets us about Sarah Palin? That men picked tits and ass over brains, education, and accomplishments. A woman who lived so close to Russia she can see it- and that was all she knew about it? Are you kidding me? Her nomination was a slap in the face to every Republican woman who accomplished anything. Not to mention the rest of us. Picking Sarah Palin was an insult. But obviously it was like giving a piece of meat to a wolf.

Posted by: bxgrl at September 9, 2009 10:05 AM

yeah, Peggy Noonan certainly was no fan.

Posted by: wasder at September 9, 2009 10:07 AM

Cobble, too late for explanations - you're in the dog house. no one rides bus over my parents and expect to get away unscathed

Posted by: more4less at September 9, 2009 10:07 AM

"Regardless, she was a candidate for VP of the United States."

So was Admiral Stockdale.

"If your writing is coherent, thank an editor."

If your writing is coherent and you are otherwise not, thank a ghostwriter.

Sorry, a bit punchy this morning. But does anyone think even the brainiest pols write their own op-eds? Palin has lots of conservative pundit friends and supporters and I am sure she got help. That is not a knock on her. Most pols do it this way, although if you are in office and have a staff, it is usually a staff person, not an outsider, who does the drafting. But the op-ed's coherence is not proof of Palin's.

Posted by: slopefarm at September 9, 2009 10:07 AM

I would hardly hold up Polonius as an example of anything. Son- dead. Daughter- drowned. A sleazy spy and underachiever.

And you never answered the question. If your daughter came to you and asked for help, would you turn her down? Answer that.

Posted by: bxgrl at September 9, 2009 10:08 AM

Seriously Benson? Shakespeare didn't know ish about Brooklyn real estate - especially how dreamy Park Slope is. If he did, he would have Polonius telling his son to rob and steal to get a piece of the Brooklyn pie.

Posted by: dirty_hipster at September 9, 2009 10:08 AM

Here is a daily challenge to Arkady, bxgrl, etc.:

Assume for the day that conservatives are capable of thinking for themselves and vote based on ideas that they have actually considered in a rational way. Rather than engaging in ad hominem attacks on conservative voters and politicians, explain why you think your ideas will make the world a better place than their ideas.

I make the same assumption about liberals every day. It's easy once you get the hang of it.

Posted by: lechacal at September 9, 2009 10:10 AM

No benson- you just like making pronouncements and you always back off when you get called on it. I take this to mean you're a big proponent as "Do as I say, not as I do." After bitching about the father and his girls, you know damn well you would do the same for your daughter and you don't want to admit it. Typical of you.

meanwhile, I need to go get a haircut and half of the entrances to my building are blocked by the NYPD / secret service presidential security detail.

Posted by: lechacal at September 9, 2009 10:16 AM

Lechacal;

DH and I had a similiar concersation a few days ago. I put it this way: I agree with almost nothing that Hillary Clinton and Dianne Feinstein have to propose, yet I see them as brihgt women who serve their country. Talking it further, I would say the same thing about Russ Feingold (whom I admire alot - a real mensch - even though I don't agree with a single thing he has to say), Chuck Schumer, Joe Lieberman, Harry Reid and others.

My challenge for my friends on the left: please identify leading conservatives in the Senate or House whom you admire as serving their country. I didn't say you have to agree with them, just admire them for their service.

Posted by: benson at September 9, 2009 10:17 AM

"And you never answered the question. If your daughter came to you and asked for help, would you turn her down? Answer that."

From what little Benson has said of his daughter - she reminds me alot of myself in that my parents also have the means to hook me up with a condo - but I realize they have other more important things to worry about (retirement, medical bills, and their own rapidly depreciating home in the burbs) so I would never put them in that position - asking for 'help' by the way of a shiny condo with stainless steel appliances.

I associate 'help' with losing my job and needing assistance getting by for a few months while i straighten out my life, but not a half million dollars so i can live beyond my means.

Posted by: dirty_hipster at September 9, 2009 10:18 AM

No rob- I am just constantly amazed by the scope of it. :-)
---------------------------------------------
Lechacal- Palin is not a conservative. She's a right wing extremist. There are plenty of conservatives and conservative ideas I agree with but it seems their voices are being drowned out by right wing extremists like Rush. Even more moderate republicaans are concerned yet they are still allowing it. remember the reaction when even Michael Steele disagreed with Rush?

I don't spend my life divided into liberal or conservative. I don't consider conservative to be a dirty word- unlike many people here, such as benson who use "liberal" like a curse word. But when it comes to extremists- left or right? Those I never assume own a brain cell between them. And that makes them so dangerous.

Posted by: bxgrl at September 9, 2009 10:18 AM

Well, she was the governor. She had a career, and a happy family. Yes, she was unqualified, but the vitriol is not commensurate. It's seems to be like it makes women question their own life choices.

Posted by: infinitejester at September 9, 2009 10:18 AM

bxgrl - my dad had the means to help me out when I was in a rough spot and said no. i'm pretty certain that he loves me very much but he was always very insistent that I never be dependent on anyone. had a rough couple of years but got through it. so your insistence that money + love = "dad will help if you ask" is NOT true. stop pushing the point on that, it's not cool. i do think that i'm a better person for getting through things on my own, and am proud of the fact that I don't owe anyone, even my dad. and believe me, i was in a much worse off situation than the two ladies in the NYT article that spurred this whole discussion from yesterday.

Posted by: CG_ups at September 9, 2009 10:19 AM

benso, I'll do that (and in fact arkady and I both answered you the other day) when you answer my question instead of running and hiding from it.

Posted by: bxgrl at September 9, 2009 10:20 AM

M4L, please. I was in NO WAY shape or form slamming your parents!

Arkady, my writing is usually INcoherent, so who do I blame?

Posted by: more4less at September 9, 2009 9:41 AM

You made a self-deprecating remark, and I made a joke about it NOT aimed at you or your folks. I was making a joke that is typically made here in NYC when someone whines that they have a problem in their life and blame it on their parents. It was a silly joke, and how you could take it as a slight against your parents is beyond me. It had nothing to do with your parents, it was about YOU complaining that your writing is "usually INcoherent".

Now back to our regularly scheduled programming....

Posted by: cobblehiller at September 9, 2009 10:20 AM

Lechacal - That would take hours to do if there were any recent reasonable proposals on the part of the GOP. As it is, it's my belief that most of the mess we're in today is a direct result of GOP policies of Reagan & both Bushes. Had we had a Dem for the previous 8 years we wouldn't have the Iraq imbroglio which in turn might've staved off the financial debacle. In addition, w/ almost anyone else but Cheney (GOP included) we might well have gotten Bin Laden by now & the terrorist threat would not be costing us so much in time & energy wasted because he would've been seen to have failed.

Posted by: Arkady at September 9, 2009 10:20 AM

"My challenge for my friends on the left: please identify leading conservatives in the Senate or House whom you admire as serving their country. I didn't say you have to agree with them, just admire them for their service."

benson, I did, and you never responded. Olympia Snowe, Susan Eisenhower and my mother [although she never held office she did serve her country in other ways.]

Posted by: cobblehiller at September 9, 2009 10:21 AM

"such as benson who use "liberal" like a curse word."

Bxgrl;

Man, you are off to a good start today, aren't you? I would ask you to find ONE quote where I used the word "liberal" as a curse word. I'll tell you point blank: speak for yourself, and STFU when it comes to talking on my behalf.

Posted by: benson at September 9, 2009 10:22 AM

if people think democrats had nothing to do with the current financial debacle then they are grossly underinformed about the mechanics of how all these crappy mortgages came to be that made up the securities that caused the financial meltdown. both sides of the fence share the blame. seriously.

Posted by: CG_ups at September 9, 2009 10:23 AM

As someone remarked above, I admire Peggy Noonan - but must admit I don't understand her Reagan hero worship. Gotta run but there *are* other conservatives I look on favorably - I listen to them to hear how reasonable people can stay on the conservative platform.

Posted by: Arkady at September 9, 2009 10:25 AM

bxgrl - If you think Sarah Palin is an extremist, your exposure to the political spectrum is limited. She has various flaws. She is inexperienced and was unprepared for national office. But her platform - if you actually take the time to stop hating her and focus on it - is a pretty solidly conservative platform. Agree with it or not it is not "extremist." You and Arkady and others really do engage in a lot of ad hominem conservative bashing without really demonstrating an understanding of the issues or an appreciation for the depth of a lot of political debate. I'm sorry if this is offensive but it's true and someone has to say it. Really, take the time and write down the key points of her platform and then pretend it's Margaret Thatcher saying them. Stop hating the person and start understanding the ideas. The quality of the political debate on this site is really atrocious.

I think a lot of people projected themselves onto to these 2 girls and their father. I don't find it a crime that he wanted them to have a great place to live and I don't see why anyone else should. Some of the pronouncements about these women were amazing. Like any of us even know them? as I said- one woman became a teacher. I respect her for that and So I figure her dad must have raised her with some good priorities.

IJ- Palin came out swinging with quite a lot of vitriol of her own. Insults, racist slams, insulting anyone who wasn't for McCain as being un-American.What goes around, comes around.

Posted by: bxgrl at September 9, 2009 10:28 AM

Olympia Snowe is a moderate. Susan Collins is more conservative. (I'm from Maine).

"What goes around, comes around."

That's fair, but to me it just seems qualitatively different when it's educated white women talking about Sarah. It's just, so fierce and from the gut, not just the usual distaste.

Them's fightin' words lechacal.

You're talking to people that are very well read, intelligent and up on the issues on both sides of the aisle. This statement exemplifies a typical right wing response to me. You fail to recognize that we do, in fact, demonstrate an understanding of the issues and an appreciation for the depth of A LOT of political debate. Your statement exemplifies the dismissive qualities of the debate from the RIGHT. We don't agree with you, hence we must not understand the issues or appreciate the finer points of the debate. You've just written yourself off for not listening or trying to actually engage and converse.

Posted by: benson at September 9, 2009 10:35 AM

lechacal- yes it is atrocious. But lets not put the blame on arkady, I or c'hiller. We were discussing Palin's column and benson immediately comes out with his tin hat comment. He has constantly baited people. And while Palin's ideas may be conservative, her delivery is not. And many of her other ideas are very extreme. If you want me to listen to your ideas on the economy, don't tell me over and over the President's middle name is Hussein. Or tell me only "real" Americans will vote Republican. I don't hate her- I hate her method of operating. And it would be great if you and benson and all the other Palin-lovers stopped assuming we dislike her for no good reason. Or did you think your peanut butter to a dog comment was a serious debate point?

benson- Why don't you STFU? Instead of being such a self-righteous prig. I would never speak for you -ugh. What an idea.

Benson and Jackal, my smart conservative friends,

Here's my take. I know lots of smart conservatives. I met some in law school (profs and students), I've got some in my extended family, and I've seen them in the news as business and political leaders. I enjoy an intelligent discussion because I think you can only get to good policies by testing ideas against opposing ideas to expose the flaws. Liberals and conservatives would both benefit from honest intellectual exchange.

I don't consider Sarah Palin smart -- politically shrewd, yes (in a smaller pond), but not smart in an intellectual sense. She really had trouble getting coherent ideas out there on the campaign trail. I find it baffling that conservatives would try to defend her on the turf of intellectual capability. But that doesn't mean I think all conservatives are dim. Her choice would have been less galling if there were no better talent available.

What's really going on is everyone on all sides is afraid to concede a point. As if admitting Palin isn't the brightest bulb will doom conservatives politically, or admittign there are some flaws with Obama's health plan will doom his presidency. We all need to lighten up -- the fate of the nation won't be resolved on the brownstoner OT.

But you asked about conservatives whose ideas I would respect, even if I disagree. I have a hard time identifying conservative political leaders whose ideas I respect, because right now the idea seems to be to say no to everything, and to attack in a disengenuous way. I know conservatives wouldn't see it that way. I don't see conservative leaders putting forth positive ideas that I can evaluate.

Even under W's presidency, the legislative ideas seemed to be about how to affirmative grab power or hamstring government. (Rumsfeld -- now there was a smart guy -- I'm not kidding -- but I certainly don't respect his ideas.) I can't recall a cabinet official or legisaltive leader who had an idea that I reacted to by thinking "I disagree but that was really well thought out." Right now in conservative political circles, there is no doubt a lot of intelligence, but my own view is that there is not a lot of intellectual honesty. That's just how I see it and I don't expect you to agree. Where is the conservative leader who says "All this death panel hysteria is just unwarranted BS, but I really think that leaving it to the markets is the way to go, and here's why . . ."?

Now, I don't just think it is the libs on this site that paint with a broad brush. Yesterday I questioned the legal principles underlying the Supreme Court's Bush v. Gore decision, and legion called me a 9-11 truther.

liberals don't even call themselves liberal anymore. Feminists were more frightened of Sarah Palin than Al Qaeda. Why do all women have to think alike ? Everybody relax. The Democrats won didn't they ?? Why does MSNBC and media have such a hard on for Rush Limbaugh? you control both houses of Congress and the Presidency. Pass whatever the f*ck u want already......Quit moanin'....

"This statement exemplifies a typical right wing response to me."

cobblehiller - Really? That was a "right wing" response? Asking people to talk about ideas? Are you going to take the old "extremist" label out of the bag next? As for people being well read on the issues - I welcome evidence of that. So far the only congnizable idea that I can distill out of all of this is that a lot of people really hate Sarah Palin. My original challenge to you still stands. Let's see if you're woman enough to take it.

i consider myself a moderate, though probably relative to this board i'm leaning towards the conservative, but my favorite politician of all time is bill bradley. and not just because he was a knick. on a championship winning team. he is smart, honest, and pushes for things that he believes in and I think he is a truly decent guy. a rare thing in politics. if he weren't such a shitty public speaker, that guy would be president.

BILL BRADLEY RULES

Why do people have a hard on for Rush? Do you ever listen to him?

Yes the democrats may have won but you and I both know politicians are egocentric jerks. We'd get better government if cats and dogs ran it.

Mr. B, here is the ultimate post for gnerating the most clicks of al time:

"Sarah Palin purchases a condo in Brooklyn for her daughter. Chooses Park Slope over Williamsburg".

And I still haven't gotten a haircut b/c Marine One is parked outside and I don't want to deal with security...

ENY that show should be called How to NOT make it in America. BARF

"chances are i'll run into these jackasses either at my job or my neighborhood. :-\"

Also, your neighbors and people around your job will be heavily represented among those seeking to win a coveted role on the cast.

Posted by: East New York at September 9, 2009 10:57 AM

lmao benson - that might result in the most blogicides in one day ever on brownstoner.

Posted by: dirty_hipster at September 9, 2009 10:57 AM

benson, I see outages on that day!

Posted by: DeLepp at September 9, 2009 10:57 AM

Lechacal: The dismissiveness of your comment was the point. I have yet to have a conversation stating my points where a conservative doesn't dismiss my statements.

"Are you going to take the old "extremist" label out of the bag next? "

You did it again!! You're amazing! You say you want conversation and yet you sling the mud!!

What is it that you are looking for? Several people here have stated myriad reasons that Ms. Palin is found to be lacking. I happen to agree. I haven't seen her speak well, I think she is a bit more extreme as opposed to moderate in her views. I think she is manipulative and disingenuous in terms of the sex appeal, and the 'I'm just a regular gal' way that she attempts to play herself. She's like a lot of politicians in that she manipulates situations and statements to serve her point of the moment.

In terms of ideas, I think she is more heavily right wing than she is moderate. I don't have anything more to add to what has already been said.

And as for how much of a woman I am, say that to my face next time I see you and I'll show you. Or perhaps you'd rather speak to BH about it?

Posted by: cobblehiller at September 9, 2009 10:57 AM

"Also, your neighbors and people around your job will be heavily represented among those seeking to win a coveted role on the cast."

Seriously - leave Williamsburg alone. it was bad enough trying to avoid the real world cast last summer.

Today in news:
"GOP Chooses Rep. Boustany, Co-Sponsor Of So-Called ‘Death Panel’ Provision, To Deliver Obama Rebuttal

Republicans today announced that Rep. Charles Boustany (R-LA), a cardiothoracic surgeon, will be delivering tomorrow’s response to President Obama’s joint address to Congress on health care. House Minority Leader John Boehner (R-OH) sent out a press release heralding Boustany’s experience and lamenting that Democrats have refused to work with him:

boustanyboehner3

Actually, one of Boustany’s most notable proposals has received bipartisan support and was included in health care legislation: a plan to permit Medicare to pay for voluntary end-of-life counseling. Boustany, in fact, was an original co-sponsor of this provision. Republicans were the ones who objected to this bipartisan proposal, saying it would establish “death panels” ready to “pull the plug on grandma.”

Last month, Boustany said the “death panel” scare-mongering had gotten “out of hand” "

Stephen Hawking doesn't speak well either - dumbass

Posted by: dirty_hipster at September 9, 2009 11:01 AM

lechacal- that was a really sh*tty comment you made to cobble. Totally unnecessary.

Posted by: bxgrl at September 9, 2009 11:01 AM

Calm down there cobblehiller. You can't even take something like "let's see if you're woman enough to take a challenge" lightly? I'm not sure who BH is, but I'm happy to talk to pretty much anyone about anything.

Posted by: lechacal at September 9, 2009 11:02 AM

DH- so are you saying I shouldn't send over the hipsters we have in Crown Heights to your neck of the woods? Sorry M4L- he doesn't want you! :-)

Posted by: bxgrl at September 9, 2009 11:02 AM

You're right bxgrl. I went too far. Cobblehiller I'm sorry for that.

Posted by: lechacal at September 9, 2009 11:03 AM

I know, DH! The nerve of him being possibly the most brilliant physicist today.

Posted by: bxgrl at September 9, 2009 11:04 AM

Please lechacal, you know what you intended with that comment. Don't try to down play it now. It was inflammatory and you meant it that way. Now deal with the repercussions.

You've met BH, my better half. I'm sure you and he could have a lovely conversation about what you meant.

Posted by: cobblehiller at September 9, 2009 11:05 AM

And you were man enough to admit it, lechacal ;)

Posted by: bxgrl at September 9, 2009 11:07 AM

I think I'll forward that to my friend, ENY who is definitely hip and trendy and a bartender. She'd be perfect for a part.

bxgrl, maybe you can forward DH to her as well. Seems like his type :-).

Posted by: Kensingtonian at September 9, 2009 11:07 AM

Nothing good will come from a discussion of Sarah Palin unfortunately. There is just no way to parse it out without falling into stereotyping. Lets move on.

Posted by: wasder at September 9, 2009 11:08 AM

Ok, lechacal.

Posted by: cobblehiller at September 9, 2009 11:08 AM

"You've met BH, my better half. I'm sure you and he could have a lovely conversation about what you meant."

I think my money is on lechacal - only because he stared me down and made me say that.

play nice kids.

Just been checking out houses in the neighbourhood that I grew up in and they are asking around the $150-200k range....getting nostalgic....sniff....

Posted by: the chicken at September 9, 2009 11:09 AM

cobblehiller - Lighten up, really. I'm sorry for taking it too far. I shouldn't have done so. I don't recall meeting your better half, but I'm sure we could have a lovely discussion on any number of topics. And I do get the subtle threat there - I just don't take it at all seriously. If I found him threatening I would have remembered meeting him. Tsk tsk for bringing physical threats into this.

I think I need to leave the OT alone for the rest of the day.

Posted by: lechacal at September 9, 2009 11:09 AM

OK, I apologized, and then cobblehiller said something I thought was a bit incindiary after I already apologized, so I fired back. Then after that it seemed like she was burying the hatchet. There are wars that have started that way. Anyway, really, hatchet buried if you want ch, and I'm outta here.

kens- she also has tattoos. She's very cool. And pretty.

Posted by: bxgrl at September 9, 2009 11:11 AM

You're the one that brought my gender into it. And I just thought that if you aren't comfortable having a serious conversation with me, that you might be more comfortable talking to my BH. No threat there, BH wouldn't hurt a fly.

Posted by: cobblehiller at September 9, 2009 11:12 AM

Hey THL- how are you feeling today? How long does the nausea last? All day or just through morning?

Posted by: bxgrl at September 9, 2009 11:19 AM

THL, are you wearing those sea sick bands? I've heard that helps immensely...if you're serious about the nausea.

Dipster - Speaking of Stephen Hawking, I have been listing to this hilarious "nerdcore" rap lately by a faux group called MC Hawking. It's supposed to be Stephen Hawking rapping. Great lines like (in voice box voice) "time to give - a newtonian demonstration - of a bullet - it's mass - and its acceleration..." That's from the song "All my shootings be drive-bys" in which he raps about a drive by of a bunch of MIT students. Or, from "The Mighty Stephen Hawking" -- (also in voice box voice) "Dr Dre can suck my dick - that bitch got no PHD - me I lost count of mine - I've got stupid whack degrees - complex math it ain't no thing - I'm mad dope crazy fly - like quantum formula - I'll leave you asking why". If you're interested shoot me an email at lechacal2008 at gmail and I'll send you a clip.

Posted by: lechacal at September 9, 2009 11:26 AM

m4l and slopefarm - I have a few hairs on the back of my head, which Mrs Jackal usually cuts, but she's super busy these days with the move and kids so I figured I would give her a break and go get a haircut today.

OK, now I'm really really probably going to walk away from the OT. Not just an empty threat this time.

Posted by: lechacal at September 9, 2009 11:27 AM

hahaha lech - i actually saw that a couple weeks ago! hadn't had a laugh that good in a while!

Posted by: dirty_hipster at September 9, 2009 11:29 AM

When I was on my last cruise, the seasick bands did nothing to lessen my nausea. Of course, the 20 mojitos during lunch didn't help either.

Posted by: Biff Champion at September 9, 2009 11:29 AM

Is it safe to come in here yet? The anger spout seemed to be going at full blast and presented a serious drowning hazard for a while.

THL, lemon mint flavored Emetrol helps me with severe nausea. It's actually for pregnant women and I like it because it works extremely well. That and "ginger cuts" sold in the candy aisle of the supermarket.

Biff, I wore seasick bands sailing recently and they worked really well...except for when I got off the boat and took them off, everything started spinning! And, unlike you, I wasn't liquored up..

THL, the other thing is to carry Saltines or Ginger Snaps w you. Both of my sisters-in-law swore by them, they'd keep them by the bed and had a couple before getting up b/c mornings were the worst. I'm not even a parent and love giving pregnancy advice!

Not surprised ENY - being that I work mostly with women, I have noticed women LOVE to hate on each other.

Often, it takes more than two. People don't always recall events as accurately as they'd like to think, and others tend to embellish their stories or perceive events from a particular perspective.

Posted by: Expert Textpert at September 9, 2009 12:01 PM

On the B63 bus, they have added MTA sponsored signs in the ad spaces saying that one should give the front seats to elderly, disabled, etc. One problem? The signs are always in the very back of the bus. Ninnies.

When they had the VP debate last fall, one of the columnists from the Village Voice pulled off a journalistic coup. He noticed that Sarah's panty lines were those of the old style "mom" panties. He seriously cited this as proof that she was out-of-step with mainstream America.

I knew a woman years ago who was tiny. When she got pregnant she became so huge people literally left the subway car because they thought she was about to give birth on the train. She told me at least 2-3 people jumped up to give her seats wherever she went. She was HUGE at 7 months and less than 5 feet tall.

This from the guy who is asking about woman and their pubic hair. Not much difference.

After my ankle surgery I was shocked by how few people were willing to give up a seat to me with a air cast and cane.

9 times out of 10 it was an relatively older person 40+.

If I was on that train with my mom and didn't jump up immediately for someone in need she's have whacked me so hard and made me stand.

Have we completely stopped teaching kids manners?

Notice that the circle is now complete:

DeLepp mentions Sarah Palin artcile;

Lechacal enters into Sarah Palin fray;

Lechacal retreats from Sarah Palin debate;

Lechacal announces that he needs to go get a haircut;

Haircut announcement segues into hair relocation of middle-aged men;

Hair relocation topic segues into pubic hair discussion;

Pubic hair discussion leads to speculation about Sarah "down there".

Yes, we're back to Sarah Palin!! The circle is complete!!

Posted by: benson at September 9, 2009 12:07 PM

I've got a favorite bus driver. When the bus is full and a preganant woman, elderly person or a woman carrying a small child gets on and no one gives up their seat, he pulls the bus over, turns off the engine and announces that until that woman/elderly person is seated, the bus will go nowhere and if no one gets up he will take the bus out of service and kick everyone off except for the elderly/disabled/pregnant person. He rocks my world!

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at September 9, 2009 12:07 PM

THL- I don't know. Several times I've been on the train and a teenager asked me if I would like his seat. Young, African American kids.

Posted by: bxgrl at September 9, 2009 12:08 PM

ENY :-) C'mon...in that instance they do suck! Pretending to sleep or not see me while I struggle to stand on a jerking train makes those women sucky cows in my book!

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at September 9, 2009 12:08 PM

"He noticed that Sarah's panty lines were those of the old style "mom" panties."

So basically he spent the presser staring at her ass. Sounds like me towards the end of my reporting days. He gets extra credit for making a story out of it.

Sarah Palin & "mom panties".
She should come over to the liberal side and don a thong. She'd be hot!

Posted by: Expert Textpert at September 9, 2009 12:09 PM

I'm NO fan of Palin but to judge her by her panties? That's evil.

Snappy, thanks for the sleeping beauties. I love the exposed belly sleepers. Lou is the only one of my cats that like to sleep on her back paws stretched to the heavens. It's all I can do not to rub the fuzzy black and white belly.

giving up seat to pregnant ladies can be awkward. a few weeks ago, I gave up seat to a lady that I thought was a few months pregnant. She took the seat and told me "BTW, I'm not pregnant" upon which I responded "consider my seat offer as peace offering for the mistake". We both had a chuckle and that was that. But I did think thru what would've happened if that was with a lady who took major offense to it

That's the thing too about the trains. They jerk, incredibly so when you've lost the ability to stand on both feet. It's really scary.

Bxgrl, that's very encouraging to hear.

Posted by: TownhouseLady at September 9, 2009 12:12 PM

Sleeping kitty belly is irresistable. When Pia snoozes that way I always want to rub her, but she's a light sleeper so I cant.

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at September 9, 2009 12:12 PM

Yes Snappy, they do suck in that instance. I'd definitely give you my seat if I saw you hobbling into the train.

Posted by: East New York at September 9, 2009 12:13 PM

She's repulsive to me. Still two wrongs don't make a right. That reporter was WRONG!

I'd rather she be the one to show herself up than people taking pot shots at her lest we give her fuel for her whiney The media is unfair to me" fire. Why prove her right?

They pick on everyone- Michelle Obama's shorts (in 100+ degree weather on vacation) ring a bell?

"What's with those people standing up in a half-full car?"

infintite: They're've been studies on this. It's a personal space issue. People will sit a seat apart, but for awhile if there are only seats with a person sitting in every other, people will stand. It's fascinating. They showed time-lapsed footage of several subways cars. They were also talking about other public places, plazas, etc. I'll go look for the study/documentary online.

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at September 9, 2009 12:19 PM

snappy- for what its worth, in this society men were told they should be polite to women (which may account for the passive/aggressive behavior expressed here) and open doors for them, or give up seats. Until the day we are taught that gender does not override social niceties, it will probably stay this way. But I have in fact seen young woman get up for a pregnant one, and also for an older person with a cane or injury.

Posted by: bxgrl at September 9, 2009 12:19 PM

I stand up almost all the time in the subway, even when it's empty. I don't touch anything. It's kind of a fun subway surfing challenge. I stand with my feet kind of wide apart and try to make it the entire trip without having to lean on anything or grab a handle. I read while I am doing this.

Sure, Bxgirl, plenty of women do give up their seats for the person in need. I don't deny that. I'm just saying they don't do it for me. Not in the last month anyway. And politeness and what I in this situation consider to be common sense, has nothing to do with gender roles. If you are able bodied and capable of standing you should get up for a person in real need of a seat be you a man or a woman. We can't blame gender roles for rudeness. (well, I see it as rudeness, but I'm biased...I'm hobbling on a cane! LOL)

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at September 9, 2009 12:24 PM

DH- Then I guess you don't pay attention to what men call women (or other men) behind their backs.

I could write to Palin and tell her to her face but the point with her is she put herself out there for a really important position. You think you're up to a job like Veep? You are going to have to prove it because you are going to be responsible for a hell of a lot of people and their lives.

THL- on principle I agree with that. Not much of a journalist.

And there is this NYPD helicopter that keeps flying by my window. Anyone dare me to stand next to the window and act like I'm cutting a hole in it?

How about my weekly NYC trivia quiz?

In the 1920's,Robert Moses could foresee that the Port of NY, then one of NYC's economic engines, was in danger of becoming obsolete. The trucks to and from the piers on Manhattan's West and Lower East Side were always fighting the other types of traffic, and the speace for staging cargo was getting tighter.

Moses proposed that the Port Of NY move its main operations to a completely new area, located in Brooklyn. His proposal was accepted, and work began on the new port. Piers were built, as well as adjacent lofts and even housing for the workers. The project did not advance far, however, because the funding stopped (I think due to the Great Depression, but I'm not sure).

Until recently, remains of this "new" port remained. There were some loft buildings left standing, that were only recently leveled. The housing still stands, however.

Question: in what part of Brooklyn was this new port to be located?

I guess the President just left...the helicopters just zoomed very low over my head.

Posted by: Arkady at September 9, 2009 1:46 PM

gowanus!!!

Posted by: CG_ups at September 9, 2009 1:48 PM

And the answer is........

Mill Basin!!!!

Yes, believe it or not, Mill Basin, the current home of Brooklyn-style McMansions, was once slated to be an industrial hub.

Mill Basin was once an island, called Mill Island. My father used to camp on the island when he was a kid. It was united with the Brooklyn "mainland" when Moses started to build the port. He thought that Jamaica Bay would make a better port, as it has less tidal action.

If anyone is familiar with Mill Basin in the recent past, you would remember that there was a group of 1920's-style loft buildings (at around Ave. U and East 68th Street or so) that sat incongruously within the suburban-type landscape. These loft buildings were recently torn down to make way for a housing development.

Folks familiar with Mill Basin also know that it is divided into two areas: "old" Mill Basin, on the north side of Ave.U, and "new" Mill Basin to the south. Old Mill Basin was developed in the 1920's, as housing for the dock workers. New Mill Basin is that part that used to be Mill Island, and the housing there was developed in the 1960's and afterwards.

oh m4l i was thinking of the other annoying person. my fakey colleague with the machine gun laugh has also been pretty pathetic. we are few women on the trading floor but darned if we aren't like estrogen pumped animals in the jungle. houlah!

Posted by: CG_ups at September 9, 2009 2:54 PM

"this area is kind of a wasteland for grab and go food since they closed mangia."

CG - they closed Mangia!?

When I worked on Wall St - Starwich used to be right across the street - which was decent (but expensive)

Maiden Heaven (maiden just east of broadway) is pretty solid too.

They also closed the Cosi on 70 Pine right before I switched jobs too :(

Posted by: dirty_hipster at September 9, 2009 2:58 PM

"we are few women on the trading floor but darned if we aren't like estrogen pumped animals in the jungle."

I understand many estrogen pumped animals frequent The Wine Bar in Brooklyn Heights.

Posted by: Biff Champion at September 9, 2009 3:01 PM

And Biff, you are one of them..

Posted by: bitter retort at September 9, 2009 3:04 PM

yah, when mangia on wall closed, it was quite a tragedy. pret a manger is still around but nowhere near the breadth of mangia, though they did open a fresco to go. not the same though.

Yes, and I also cried during Brian's Song.

It's called having a sensitive side, bitter. Something you wouldn't know about. :-)

Posted by: benson at September 9, 2009 3:09 PM

Anyone else think Adrienne's pizza on stone street sucks?

Posted by: dirty_hipster at September 9, 2009 3:12 PM

I ate at 7-11 yesterday!

Posted by: infinitejester at September 9, 2009 3:12 PM

I wouldn't expect a place with "white" and "plain" in it's name to have very interesting cuisine.

Posted by: Biff Champion at September 9, 2009 3:12 PM

Benson, I call your downtown White Plains and raise you lovely NJ office campus

Posted by: more4less at September 9, 2009 3:13 PM

they have a decent burger shop but all the dang burgers are named after people on CNBC. i'll be damned if i eat a burger named after dennis motherfucking kneale.

Posted by: CG_ups at September 9, 2009 3:13 PM

omg, adrienne's is totally overrated biff! 100% agreed.

Posted by: CG_ups at September 9, 2009 3:13 PM

Does anyone remember Wall Street Kitchen and Bar in that funky bank-like building on Broad St near the NYSE? It closed in the last recession. Shame too. It was a fun after-work drinks spot.

Posted by: lechacal at September 9, 2009 3:15 PM

We had the best clam chowder on the Cape from Oliver's in Yarmouth. Also hed halibut fingers and fried oysters.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at September 9, 2009 3:16 PM

CG, you have me mistaken for DH. While it doesn't bother me, I'm certain he hasn't been insulted that much in a long time.

Posted by: Biff Champion at September 9, 2009 3:16 PM

"but all the dang burgers are named after people on CNBC."

What?? Oh, you know all the tools who use that as a pickup line.

Posted by: infinitejester at September 9, 2009 3:16 PM

M4L;

You win, hands down. I worked in that environment for 15 years. My condolences. After 15 years of that, I was actually excited to come to downtown White Plains!! Pretty pathetic, if you think about it.

Someday, I'd love to work in Manhattan.

i work in a eurotrash strip mall

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at September 9, 2009 3:26 PM

jester - it's even grosser because most of the burgers are named after chicks. yep, the gross jokes abound waiting in line at that place. i'll have a maria, no a becky, bleh.

Posted by: more4less at September 9, 2009 3:35 PM

I saw the discussion about Sarah Palin this morning before I left but I wasn't going to join in. I think she speaks for herself. A proofread editorial is a different matter.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at September 9, 2009 3:35 PM

"I think we need you and Biff back on the OT full time."

We're currently negotiating our contracts with Mr. B. We're almost there, except he's pushing back on our combined rider that demands limitless cans of PBR in our dressing room being served by semi-clad Thai male gymnasts.

"No doubt - the estrogen mafia has been a little too vocal lately. (love you gals ;))"

I thought DIBS and I brought too much estrogen already to the OT.

The only thing I know about semi-clad would have to do with replacement windows whose exterior is wrapped in aluminum, or aluminium for the EUROTRASH.

Posted by: Biff Champion at September 9, 2009 3:58 PM

Biff, I was actually going to ask if people wanted to do a super low key after work drinks thing this week, but haven't gotten around to it. OTOH don't want to interfere with the clambake.

Anyone up for an impromptu visit to the Brooklyn Inn?

Posted by: lechacal at September 9, 2009 3:59 PM

Biff...we had the clam and lobster bake out here in Provincetown. The What, cornerbodega, and ghettoazzpnkbtch were all here.

Disrespectful, dismissive, and foolish. Good work benson!

Yeah, mentioning Sarah Palin around liberal women is always good for a few laughs. It's like giving peanut butter to a dog. Predictable and kind of funny reaction.

Posted by: lechacal at September 9, 2009 9:55 AM

Dismissive and insulting, at the same time! Good work Lechacal!

Shall I go on? I can pluck a few more gems out of the 'discussion'.

Posted by: cobblehiller at September 9, 2009 4:07 PM

By the way, bitter, DH, Pork Slap (the real one) and I met for very last minute drinks last week at Trout. That and Pacifico next door would be an excellent place to hang out for a modest sized gathering. Great outdoor space and very jovial environment. AND...they serve cans of Pork Slap beer.

"Palin mentioned?

Where do I mention "liberal women" in my post? Where do I give any indication AT ALL as to who would be putting on the tin hats???? Methinks you read what you wanted to in my post.

Count me in for the Inn.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at September 9, 2009 4:12 PM

No DH, we're back on the sexist, partisan, instigating and really despicable tone that appeared on the thread today.

Posted by: cobblehiller at September 9, 2009 4:14 PM

Biff, Brooklyn Inn is great - unfortunately this week is much better for me than next week, but we can always start making tentative plans for next week and see what happens. How about next Thursday? I was thinking of something much more real-time, like tonight or tomorrow night, because I expect to get super busy with a big project starting Friday night sometime.

Posted by: lechacal at September 9, 2009 4:15 PM

"I'm around for the forseeable future. Warm up those drums!"

How about Brooklyn Inn this Thursday (what the heck, there's a doghouse in the backyard with my name on it already)?

Posted by: benson at September 9, 2009 4:18 PM

I thought benson's comment about bringing out the tin hats was quite funny. Of course, he actually turned out to be right but that was too easily predicted.

I don't agree with much of what he said about her. I think it was hipster who, early on in the discussion, hit the nail on the head with his description of her being a big fish in an inellectually snall pond (Alaska) but being a very good politician.

Although the tides are later and the sun sets a bit earlier out here than in NYC, it is quite close to 5:00 cocktail time.

Posted by: Biff Champion at September 9, 2009 4:20 PM

cobblehiller - I just realized that you totally remind me of one of my sisters. Not a bad thing, mind you, she's super duper smart, 4.0 GPA undergrad, top of class med school, but she gets really super worked up about political issues, which makes the rest of the family pretend to be conservative around her just to watch her get worked up. She's pretty much the textbook New England white liberal (go to www.stuffwhitepeoplelike.com for a full description of the species).

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at September 9, 2009 4:22 PM

And you're a Republican no, DIBS? So of course you found it amusing. Because the subtext of that comment is that anyone who doesn't want to fuck or elect Palin has to be a nutter.

This is at bare minimum disrespectful, and dismissive of the actual disagreement, and I'm shocked to find myself calling you guys out on this. And for those of you fellas taking a sexist tone on this thread today. I really thought you guys, despite our political differences - were a little more highly evolved and at the bare minimum had a modicum of respect for the 'estrogen mafia' on the OT. Frankly, I'm pretty disgusted right now.

Did someone say YANKEES?

Well I guess it's time to declare the AL East race over. Yanks win. Nevertheless, this being the greatest single franchise in the history of baseball, the goal remains a World Series. We haven't done anything yet.

That said, the Yanks will likely have their toughest test winning the AL pennant. Beating up on the National League team (for example the Phillies - if they make it) in the Series will be a mere afterthought.

Posted by: East New York at September 9, 2009 4:31 PM

Arkady - I seem to recall leaving some sort of plastic behind the bar (maybe my driver's license?) and running a tab, but I usually have my swerve on by the time I leave the Inn so I wouldn't swear to it. Any chance you can make it out next Thursday?

Posted by: lechacal at September 9, 2009 4:31 PM

For the record, I think she's the nut job. Perhaps politically savvy, TO A DEGREE, but still a nutjob and if anyone think's she'd get close to being President then they too are nutjobs.

McCain wasn't going to win but she was the icing on that cake. My, god, tht has to be up there as the WORST political decision in history. Yes, it ralleid a small segent of the population towards them but still, laughable if it weren't such a horror show.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at September 9, 2009 4:32 PM

"Beating up on the National League team (for example the Phillies - if they make it) in the Series will be a mere afterthought."

ENY - Um, sort of like the Florida Marlins in 2003?

Posted by: lechacal at September 9, 2009 4:33 PM

haha Arkady - i got stuck behind a woman at the grocery store in long island who paid with a cheque (sorry ENY, i spell it the EUROTRASH way)

the cashier had no idea how to process the payment. it seroiusly took 4 people + the manager to figure out how to run the check. Comical. Sometimes the express line ISN'T so express

lechacal - i checked, they are cash only.

people - don't poke the bear. step away from the babysitter. put the gun down.....slooowly

Posted by: more4less at September 9, 2009 4:37 PM

I'm in for either day. Biff said only next week works, but if people are in for tomorrow - and sounds like they are - I say we go ahead and do tomorrow and take next week as it comes.

Arkady - No Donkey hunting, I promise. :) Just curious if you'll be there. I don't think we really got a chance to chat at the last one.

You know, dave. I liked McCain and thought he had a serious chance of winning. I even thought about voting for him- but once he picked Palin, forget it. That decision made me realize his lack of judgment in this was a serious problem.

"seeing as a cocktail can cost upwards of $14-15 before tip, i think it's fine to pay for a drink with plastic. geebs. everyone is completely off the rails today."

my bad - i was ranting more about people that want to use their credit card on a $5 bud light.

True, CG-U, sometimes you just don't feel like going to the bank machiney thing.

Tomorrow is good for me...

Posted by: infinitejester at September 9, 2009 4:41 PM

i liked mccain against GWB and against democrat rivals, but this past election he just seemed kind of different. poor guy, it felt like the system finally got to him. of course the whole palin thing sealed the deal.

BILL BRADLEY 2016?

Posted by: CG_ups at September 9, 2009 4:41 PM

you are your crappy cheap beer dh :P haha

Posted by: CG_ups at September 9, 2009 4:43 PM

Lech, I would show up tomorrow if it works best for you and the majority of the others. I'll stick to my motto of "It's easier to ask forgiveness than it is to get permission".

Posted by: Biff Champion at September 9, 2009 4:43 PM

BB said he won't run again. Too bad, I really like him.

Posted by: Arkady at September 9, 2009 4:43 PM

What happened to the "cool McCain" during the primaries in 2000 against GWB. You know, the charsamatic laid back moderate guy who would go on the daily show and late night tv and poke fun at himself?

Posted by: dirty_hipster at September 9, 2009 4:44 PM

"I'll wager some money with you, ENY."

NOW we are talking! I knew that would get Dave going.

Sure thing Dave...let's wait until we get closer to the actual playoffs and you and I will set a wager like the gentlemen we are.

FYI, anyone else who wants a piece of this will be welcome.

"ENY - Um, sort of like the Florida Marlins in 2003?"

No, more like the Mets in 2000!

MILTON BRADLEY 2016

Posted by: Biff Champion at September 9, 2009 4:44 PM

I'll post a pic on the Forum next week from our favorite watering hole, pepe's Wharf, the bar overlooking the bay and the fishing boats. The sunset is spectacular.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at September 9, 2009 4:44 PM

I think he wanted so badly to win he took the advice of some truly moronic campaign advisors who told him to fight GWB's image, not establish his own. That whole maverick thing was so stupid.

Posted by: bxgrl at September 9, 2009 4:44 PM

what ever happened to charles barkley's political aspirations? wasn't he going to run for governor? if freaking al franken can win, i would think the c-dog could do it.

Posted by: CG_ups at September 9, 2009 4:44 PM

So it doesn't seem like the OT is filled with a bunch of misogynists today, can we now talk about how sexy John McCain would look in a thong?

Posted by: Biff Champion at September 9, 2009 4:45 PM

I still like the Texas Rangers for the wild card

Posted by: dirty_hipster at September 9, 2009 4:47 PM

Um, no, Biffers.

"I really thought you guys ... were a little more highly evolved and at the bare minimum had a modicum of respect for the 'estrogen mafia' on the OT."

Um, BIG mistake. How many men do you actually know, CH? What on earth could have made you arrive at a silly notion?!?

(JKING!)

Posted by: East New York at September 9, 2009 4:48 PM

I'd really like the truth about the whole process in selecting Palin.

Was it McCain's idea first? If not whose??

What level of due diligence was done and by whom??? Talk about finding WMDs!!!

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at September 9, 2009 4:49 PM

Darn, can't find a pic of McCain in a thong, but did find a consolation "prize": Saddam in tighty whities:

can we now talk about how sexy John McCain would look in a thong?

Posted by: Biff Champion at September 9, 2009 4:45 PM

"MILTON BRADLEY 2016"

Dammit, Biff!! It's always about Milton, isn't it?

"I'm talking about hatred, period. I'm talking about when I go to eat at a restaurant. I've got to listen to the waiters badmouthing me at another table. That's what I'm talking about. Everything."

g-d- that sounds good, dave!

Posted by: bxgrl at September 9, 2009 4:57 PM

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at September 9, 2009 4:59 PM

Best brussel sprouts ever....from Vetri & Xochitl * in Philadelphia....

Split brussel sprouts

Spread on cookie sheet and douse with olive oil, sea salt and pancetta (Bacon for you hoi polloi.)

Roast at 375 for about 10-15 minutes.

You will not go back to other vegetables after having this.

* Xochitl is run by a former Vetri sous chef and he brought the recipe with him

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at September 9, 2009 4:59 PM

Anything infused bourbon sounds wonderful right about now.

500?

Posted by: CG_ups at September 9, 2009 5:03 PM

CG - That's not even in the same family.

Posted by: Arkady at September 9, 2009 5:04 PM

ROFL @ "vile green things"!!!!

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at September 9, 2009 5:04 PM

Biff, cant speak for the other provinces but don't recall seeing broccoli during my time in China. Califlower (whatever the spelling) is pretty common. BTW, broccoli in chinese is referenced as western califlower

Posted by: more4less at September 9, 2009 5:05 PM

Ok...shall we move on the the heavenly pleasure that is oven roasted garlic??? It works so well on just about everything. Perfect to drop in a cup of Chammomile tea when suffering from a bad head cold.

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at September 9, 2009 5:05 PM

Fried cauliflower and zucchini is so yummy. Hmmmm...need to hit the produce section soon!

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at September 9, 2009 5:06 PM

CG_ups, chinese broccoli = califlower

Posted by: more4less at September 9, 2009 5:07 PM

We totally need to have Mr. B add a B'stoner recipe tab to this site. He could break it down to have it searchable by course, main ingredients, total prep time. Sigh. That would rock. Everyone here seems to know such good recipes.

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at September 9, 2009 5:08 PM

John "My friends" McCain annoys the everliving sh*t out of me.

2000 - acts like a maverick just to siphon off Dems
2004 - sells out Kerry, acts like a loyal solider
2008 - totally flunks out

Posted by: infinitejester at September 9, 2009 5:08 PM

roasted eggplant + dried salted fish + tofu is tasty treat - at least for the Chinese palate

Posted by: more4less at September 9, 2009 5:09 PM

M4L, that's not my understanding of Chinese broccoli. This is what it is, and what my in-laws refer to it as:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kai-lan

Posted by: Biff Champion at September 9, 2009 5:09 PM

The Japanese serve roasted garlic in some Yakitori restaurants. Yes, heavenly. Thai garlic is less of a sharp taste, less pungent, more flavorful.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at September 9, 2009 5:09 PM

i thought chinese broccoli was sort of in between regular broccoli and broccoli rabe

Posted by: CG_ups at September 9, 2009 5:11 PM

Mrs. C. makes Chinese Broccoli with Oyster Sauce (and garlic) and it is wonderful. They also typically have it at dim sum (the plates of it are huge). It's cheap as borscht to buy in Chinatown along Canal and a few of the side streets.

Posted by: Biff Champion at September 9, 2009 5:12 PM

I think anything that could combine bacon, oven roasted garlic and cheese would make my little heart go all a flutter. And, if it goes well with a light beer, jackpot!

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at September 9, 2009 5:12 PM

Oh, wait...grilled cheese sandwich with bacon and oven roasted garlic on whole wheat. And french fries. And beer. Oh my!

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at September 9, 2009 5:12 PM

I think it's in the kale family.

Posted by: Arkady at September 9, 2009 5:14 PM

snappy - garlic cheddar beer soup with crumbled bacon topping!

Posted by: CG_ups at September 9, 2009 5:14 PM

Biff, we're both correct. in the context of broccili is western cauliflower, cauliflower is the chinese broccili. In the context of what is it when someone says "chinese broccili", you're correct. BTW, the Northerners like to eat the big stem of the chinese broccili vs. southerners like the leafy portion

Posted by: more4less at September 9, 2009 5:15 PM

I thought Pauline was in the Kael family.

Posted by: Biff Champion at September 9, 2009 5:15 PM

snaps- totally agree about carrots. You guys are killing me with all the great recipes.

Posted by: bxgrl at September 9, 2009 5:16 PM

Whole wheat would destroy the taste of a grilled cheese sandwich, even more so a Croque Monsieur or a Croque Madame.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at September 9, 2009 5:18 PM

Thanks M4L, that clears it up.

Posted by: Biff Champion at September 9, 2009 5:18 PM

I only eat whole wheat bread Dave! Well, actually, if I'm out, I eat other kinds, but when it comes to loaves of bread, I only buy whole wheat.
