without fail, my anxiety levels are at a 9 and pushing to a 10, the day after labor day. this happens EVERY year! wtf?
i literally thought i was going to faint on the train and be one of those "sick passengers" that makes everyone late that people hate. thankfully i was able to focus on my book and avoid fainting.

Rob you must chill, or meditate, or for that matter medicate.

Posted by: TownhouseLady at September 8, 2009 9:19 AM

Also, I WAS the sick passenger once when I shattered my ankle when I slipped on an icy subway platform.

Now whenever they announce a sick passenger, I get a twinge.

did anyone see the anthony bourdain no reservations last night? it was all about eating in the outer boroughs. in brooklyn he focused on marlow and diner. pretty cool.

omg wanna hear something funny? i threw out a TON of stuff this weekend. next day i go outside and this nasty cranky woman who never says hi and closes the door in peoples faces in the lobby, was having a sidewalk sale and i totally saw some of the stuff i threw out for sale!

Did you registered dems get the election guide in the mail last week? You HAVE to read it! I've never seen a funnier collection of poorly written stuff in my life.

Don't miss the guy running are the 'rents are too damn high' platform? How did he even get on the ballot?

I gave it to da kid with instructions to email all of them about a proofreading job!

Yes, I'm still on vacation. Back Monday.

m4l, there's no arguing here in the OT. That's usually reserved for a real estate thread when cornerbodega or BHO or brickoven can't believe people would pay such money for places!!!

Also, I have about another hour of fence painting work. I also have to paint the new beadboard that I wrapped the kitchen island with.

They went on Citi/Amex presale at 9am which is sold out. They open to the general public at 12 noon via ticketmaster, so their might be some left then.

The realisation that I'm going to be "homeless" next month for the first time in 15 years is starting to set in...

Posted by: the chicken at September 8, 2009 10:18 AM

Posted by: Petebklyn at September 8, 2009 10:19 AM

Chicken, you'll soon have to sleep on top of the proceeds of the house sale - that should perk you up a bit

Posted by: more4less at September 8, 2009 10:27 AM

ah ok, i'm way southie and west of baltic/smith. i live in the sticks. made me nervous though, because i'm gone around then and was scared for my dog at home alone.

slow day here. well, except for the heat on the park slope condo sisters thread. is there nothing exciting to do/talk about other than hating on a couple of girls who scored decent digs?

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at September 8, 2009 10:58 AM

So I was looking at job opportunities in other states last night. I could potentially move to Phoenix, AZ - not take a pay cut and cut my housing costs by 70%.

Anyone been there? Would I want to impale myself on a cactus after a month?

Posted by: dirty_hipster at September 8, 2009 11:01 AM

DH, I have an older friend who moved out there about 5 years ago. She and her hubby sold their apt for about $500k and bought a sprawling home for about $130k and are quite happy. I don't know how Phoenix is for folks your age, but maybe you should take a week long vaca out there and see how it feels.

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at September 8, 2009 11:04 AM

DH, Heard it's actually pretty nice. A bunch of eye candy. You might like it but there is no Hipsters or Walter crackfoods there.

Posted by: Kensingtonian at September 8, 2009 11:04 AM

DH- I often do that and stop because well, sometimes it's painful to see.

I've seriously considered both Dallas and Austin. We could earn just about the same and reduce our cost of living 30%.

Posted by: TownhouseLady at September 8, 2009 11:06 AM

G'Morning Snappy!

Have you gotten any closure on Hari's situation yet?

Posted by: TownhouseLady at September 8, 2009 11:08 AM

Interesting guys - i'll have to check it out.

Posted by: dirty_hipster at September 8, 2009 11:12 AM

DH
The problem with living in places out in NM or Arizona is that EVERYTHING is trucked in. The water supply, the Veggies,Fruit etc so it's sorta weird that you are inhabiting a place that nature never intended people to inhabit...
plus it gets MAD HOT out there
on that note - Austin sounds fun to me!

Posted by: gemini10 at September 8, 2009 11:15 AM

We had a bad weekend. Had to put one of MM's kitties to sleep. I was a wreck at the vet. She had been my favorite- a beautiful little black and white. It turned out she had oral cancer and her body broke down. It was so fast- literally one day to the next. She was fine and then she wasn't.

Posted by: bxgrl at September 8, 2009 11:15 AM

Unfortunately no THL...I *still* havent gotten the poo test results (sons of $@!#%) And, he seems content to keep effing up my bathroom (found litter and shit flung all over the place this morning...nice way to wake up - having to don hasmat gear and scrub the bathroom down at 7am - dirty little bastard!) His blood results were good, but until I get the poo test results, he still has to stay away from Pia. But, for now, he's enjoying his times of parole to run around the living room and kitchen.

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at September 8, 2009 11:15 AM

DH, 1 plus is better Pro basketball team. Think it's one where you need to see with your own eyes cause it's much diff than NYC

Posted by: gemini10 at September 8, 2009 11:22 AM

She was less than 2. the vet was very surprised at how fast the cancer overtook her. That was the 2nd cat this week for her. Really awful. She was the runt of the litter and never very strong but it was so sad.

Posted by: bxgrl at September 8, 2009 11:22 AM

thx dudes - phoenix was hypothetical. saw similar stuff in portland, or and chicago. people always seem to justify the high housing prices in NYC bc salaries are higher, but it doesn't seem that moving elsewhere always = taking a 50% pay cut.

Posted by: dirty_hipster at September 8, 2009 11:23 AM

can anyone recommend a restaurant on author ave in the bronx? taking my 90 year old granny there for her birthday (her request!) with my parents etc and i have been charged with coming up with a place to go.

oh and rob, i didn't hear how your sister's birthday party was!? did you get a video camera? did she like the asparagus? did you dress up?! somehow i don't think my granny's birthday will be as exciting..

:)

Posted by: bodhi_brooklyn at September 8, 2009 11:23 AM

But even if you take the pay cut, sometimes the cost of living cuts as well and balances out.

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at September 8, 2009 11:24 AM

Sorry, Bodhi...I'm not familiar with bronx restaurants so I can't suggest any.

Posted by: dirty_hipster at September 8, 2009 11:26 AM

Snappy,

I saw this video this weekend and went momentarily gay. Holy Jesus, she should NEVER be allowed to wear pants. My hub walked through the room and I said look, pointed to the TV and he stood through the whole song staring mouth open like me.

I totally get what you see in her. The waist to hip ratio is WOAH!

Jump forward to the 23 mark the intro is annoying.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VbGV2_8Yqg4

Doesn't she look so pretty without the heavy makeup? Sometimes she looks a little draggish to me.

Posted by: TownhouseLady at September 8, 2009 11:26 AM

Bxgrl oh no! That's gut wrenching. poor MM.

She's at peace now.

And yes, she looks much better with little to no makeup. And I hate when they put shimmery hosiery on her...her thighs definitely look better au naturale and allowed to jiggle a bit :) Sigh...

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at September 8, 2009 12:10 PM

Thanks M4L. I'll do that. Funny thing was I was more a wreck than she was. I was more attached to Rocky because it was so hard to tame her, she was so shy. When I finally made friends with her she was a joy. Bad enough being too attached to my own guys- now I have to get attached to MM's cats too?

Posted by: bxgrl at September 8, 2009 12:15 PM

Ginger Ale and unsalted crackers are a near and dear friend to me.

I just wanted to hear what everyone else is eating because every now and again I'll hear something and think YUM! I could totally go for that right now.

I'm also oddly into toasted Eggo frozen waffles with peanut butter spread on them.

I never really like those waffles before and peanut butter had always been meh to me. It's like all my likes and dislikes are turned on their head.

DIBS, I was in Sunset Park recently and thought to myself "DIBS would be happy here - this hoods has tons of Mexicans and Chinese residents"

Posted by: more4less at September 8, 2009 12:45 PM

I'm old school. I LOVE the beach, love tanning, love swimming. I can do absolutely nothing except listing to the sounds of the birds and the waves for hours on end.

I just need a snack and a drink and I'm in heaven.

Posted by: TownhouseLady at September 8, 2009 12:46 PM

...and a towel.

Posted by: TownhouseLady at September 8, 2009 12:46 PM

It's just steamed rice (no salt added since the bacon is salty - also no butter...I hate butter on rice) and fried bacon crumbled up in it. It's really supposed to be salt pork and rice, but I have no salt pork and no interest in riding down to Pathmark!

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at September 8, 2009 12:47 PM

THL, add some shade and thick women in tankinis and I'll consider going! LOL

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at September 8, 2009 12:47 PM

Bacon makes everything better. Even blah white rice.

Posted by: TownhouseLady at September 8, 2009 12:48 PM

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at September 8, 2009 12:52 PM

That could be easily arranged Snappy.

Posted by: TownhouseLady at September 8, 2009 12:52 PM

Editorial note...I'm PRETTY sure Snappy was saying o.k. to the bacon comment. Not my self indulgent one about my hair!

Posted by: TownhouseLady at September 8, 2009 12:53 PM

LOL THL! Yes, it was about the bacon :) I've never seen your hair, but I'm sure that deserves an 'absolutely' as well! LOL

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at September 8, 2009 12:54 PM

LOL.

Don't you hate it when the posts go out of sync?

Posted by: TownhouseLady at September 8, 2009 12:56 PM

Oh, I forgot...the perfect drink with the bacon and rice is some kind of kiddie juice that is orange flavored. If all else fails, regular orange juice works as well.

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at September 8, 2009 12:56 PM

When that happens sometimes I have to go back and re-read for a bit cause I'm left scratching my head ... but then again, I'm easily confuzzed!

Ha! Think about it THL!!!

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at September 8, 2009 1:04 PM

I need a place to move to where it doesn't go above 75 or below like 50. And no earthquakes. And low humidity so I don't perpetually look like Buckwheat 'bout the head. Sigh. I guess it doesn't exist. :(

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at September 8, 2009 1:06 PM

"but there has to be a fun city out there with a lower cost of living than nyc!"

I totally agree and we ponder it from time to time ourselves. What about Tuscon? From my visits out there I think that would be more fun than Phoenix even if it's smaller.

"anyone go to the West Indian Parade?"

It was all that. We had a nice time.

Have a friend who moved out to New Mexico and loves it. Lots of artists out there and it's dry enough for your luxurious locks snappy :-)

Posted by: bxgrl at September 8, 2009 1:14 PM

CHiller - I keep hearing alot about Portland, OR. So much so that I think I need to take a trip out there. Not sure if anyone has heard anything

Posted by: dirty_hipster at September 8, 2009 1:14 PM

M4L, don't they get earthquakes though?

Bxgirl, Pluto may be the spot! I was pissed when it was downgraded from a planet. Nothing makes you feel older than to know that whatever you learned in science class as a youngin' is no longer in effect!

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at September 8, 2009 1:15 PM

DH, I can see you in Seattle but not portland.

Posted by: more4less at September 8, 2009 1:15 PM

Ya know, when I watch House Hunters when they go to NM, I always cringe at the architecture. I think I'd be depressed as all hell out there having to look at that stuff. Not my style :(

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at September 8, 2009 1:16 PM

MM and Bxgrl;

Sorry about the kitties.

News flash: Brooklyn Greene sides with me in the Sugar Daddy" thread! I think that this is the first time that BG and I have agreed on something.

Posted by: benson at September 8, 2009 1:19 PM

snaps- Househunters makes me cringe no matter where they are. But if you got an authentic adobe house or have seen some of the great architecture there, its quite beautiful. Not my style but some of the places I've seen in the mags I could definitely get used to.

Posted by: bxgrl at September 8, 2009 1:19 PM

Snappy, no sure about the earthquakes. 3 out of 4 aint bad either right?

Posted by: more4less at September 8, 2009 1:22 PM

I loved Portland when I was there. The downer is the weather, though. For us hair-impaired, it's a pit.

I'm a super modern, clean lines and sharp angles kinda girl. Rounded archways and adobe fireplaces make me wanna gag! It took me 8 months to find a couch simply because I refused to buy something with rounded arms. There's something about arcs and circles that just rub me the wrong way. I have a really nice print of a painting that features multi-colored glass but I've not hung it yet (been sitting in the frame on the floor for about 3 years) because the glass featured is circular. Argh! I know, I know, I'm a nut :)

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at September 8, 2009 1:23 PM

M4L, earthquakes is a huge no no for me!

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at September 8, 2009 1:24 PM

benson- the assumption that this man is a "sugar daddy" for his daughters is really out there.Tell me if your daughter asked for your help you would turn her down. I'm sorry- there is no way in hell you would. they re paying him back and it isn't like he's "keeping" them. people on that thread are being ridiculous.

Posted by: bxgrl at September 8, 2009 1:24 PM

"Portland, OR."

I've visited - nice, relatively clean downtown area. LOTS of bikers and public support of biking (thus, not a good city for Rob). Big hipster culture and also quite proud of its generally progressive social, political and cultural attitudes. Nike has a big presence in the city, as I recall. Not very much racial diversity, I'm afraid. A great area of the country if you're a hiker, biker, vegan, nature-lover.

Posted by: East New York at September 8, 2009 1:26 PM

snappy, fact you and I can't recall if san diego has earth quakes is a good sign - ie maybe it far enough away from LA's fault lines to get any. need 6yrs to chime in or someone to look this up on the net

Posted by: more4less at September 8, 2009 1:27 PM

I just don't understand why folks get so upset because a parent decides they want to give something, albeit a home, to their children. Why lose sleep over it? Really? Like I said, even for those who would not give it or accept it, you can't deny you'd like to be in the position to give or accept it. To each his own. If all kids were raised the same way and we all agreed on everything, this would be one boring ass world.

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at September 8, 2009 1:28 PM

M4L, that just speaks to my terrible aging process...memory is the first the go :)

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at September 8, 2009 1:29 PM

Uh oh...a little googling provided this

"Like the rest of southern California, San Diego County has a number of active earthquake faults. ...Since 1984 earthquake activity in San Diego County has doubled over that of the preceding 50 years."

No SD for me!

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at September 8, 2009 1:31 PM

"ENY: finally!- I mean none of you other Brooklyn regulars took part in the food fest of a lifetime!"

I live about 4 blocks off Eastern Parkway Gem, so it's great for me. I can walk over to the festivities, watch some of the parade, hear some great Caribbean music, eat tasty food I didn't have to cook, and check out the dozens of half-naked ladies (probably my favorite part). Just when I've had enough, I turn around and walk back to my house.

Posted by: East New York at September 8, 2009 1:34 PM

That Child running thread is hilarious
but seriously I guess I am old school, but when did it become commonplace to negotiate with a 4 year old?
I watched some woman on the train with her toddler and the toddler was going nuts, but I beleive the toddler was going nuts b/c the mother wasn't just stopping it. So for 30 mins I had to endure the kid screaming and I mean MURDER screams b/c the mother was just politley saying -"ok, we don't scream on the train" then the kid stops after like 5 murderous screams and says something about the stranger next to her and how she thinks it's funny if she threw her ice cream in his face...
and the mother just giggled with her daughter. It was bizarre. I kinda left thinking wow this mother is a total prisnoer to her kid....

DH, Portland is fantastic. Great bar scene, if a little on the incestuous side because it is, after all, a much smaller city than NYC.
Most people you meet will ask you all about NYC and Brooklyn, and you would be a big fish in a little pond.
There are a lot of hipsters in Portland.

I daydream about relocating out there or to the Pacific Northwest from time to time, but work keeps me tied here.

Good Afternoon All!
So, I'm looking to buy a new mattress. I went to Sleepy's over the weekend. There is such a variety out there. I tried so many and now convinced that mattress sellers are as shady as used car dealers.
I'm more confused now then ever about mattresses.

Can anyone recommend a good place to continue my search. Or even recommend some mattresses.
Just like my men, I like my mattress firm with great support and will give me a good night's sleep.
And how much should I be spending?

Posted by: Expert Textpert at September 8, 2009 1:42 PM

Oh, and you've seen my horrid version of a kitchen table! I refuse to buy a round one and just can't find a nice small square one that will fit into the space that isn't hideously overpriced. ARRRGGHHHH!

Posted by: bxgrl at September 8, 2009 1:47 PM

Snaps - Have you looked at the Gothic CabinetCraft-type 'furniture in the raw' places? My kitchen table is from one of those - 30 years ago. It's square & small & was very reasonable.
Portland has the most wonderful Japanese garden/landscape area - really stunning - in a forest setting on a mountainside w/ little formal areas among the primeval.

Posted by: Arkady at September 8, 2009 1:50 PM

Text,

They ARE shady but it's industry wide. You know how they all say they'll beat any competitors price or give you 20% back?

Well, that's because every mattress manuf. gives the same mattress a different name for each retailer. I learned that from someone who actually worked for a big mattress manuf.

So, The same exact Simmons mattress (just using Simmnons as an example) will be called the 'Excelsior' at 1-800-mattress, the 'Highpoint' at Sleepy's, and the 'Regal' at Macys.

It's so you can never compare apples to apples and they can keep the prices escalated.

Posted by: TownhouseLady at September 8, 2009 1:50 PM

"DH, Denver, Austin or Portland."

I agree with DeLepp here, having met you and spent time in those places. I could see you being happy for a bit there. Denver less than Austin or Portland.

Posted by: cobblehiller at September 8, 2009 1:51 PM

I remember in my younger years living in LA it seemed everyone was packing up and moving to Boise. From what I hear the LA gang problem of the mid-late 90s followed them there though.

Posted by: dirty_hipster at September 8, 2009 1:53 PM

A close friend of mine lived in Seattle for many years and I went to visit several times. It's GORGEOUS. That said, it also has a very weird racial vibe, and the seamier side is really seamy — of the meth-head trailer trash variety — and those folks really scare me!

Posted by: cobblehiller at September 8, 2009 1:53 PM

I'll have to check them again Arkady...last I looked they didn't have the size I wanted :(

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at September 8, 2009 1:54 PM

And why are conservatives getting all nuts about the presidents speech to American Kids? Sooo weird!, who does Obama think he is anyway? The President or something?

Posted by: gemini10 at September 8, 2009 1:54 PM

Question about mattresses...It's illegal for companies to sell used mattresses. So what do they do when they have those '90 day trials' for mattresses and someone decides they don't want it? Are they really destroying these mattresses?

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at September 8, 2009 1:56 PM

LOL Gem!

It's really just awful of him to encourage children to do good and stay in school because they're not only helping themselves but their country as well.

Talk about drinking the Kool Aid!!

Honestly, you have to seriously question the agenda of anyone who takes issue with that message.

Nutters.

Posted by: TownhouseLady at September 8, 2009 1:57 PM

"And why are conservatives getting all nuts about the presidents speech to American Kids?"

Gem, I'm beyond boggled by this. The absolute hysteria that this has taken on is absurd. Ask benson, he might know.

True, THL. At this rate, I'll be refusing to buy a new mattress until they bring back DDT for bedbugs! Thank goodness mine is still firm and only a few years old. Too scary.

Posted by: bxgrl at September 8, 2009 2:04 PM

C'mon benson, I was being serious - for once - and asking you if you know why so many on the right are hysterical, as in screaming and crying on TV, about Obama speaking to their school age children. Any insights?

Posted by: cobblehiller at September 8, 2009 2:04 PM

"poor conservatives have nothing left to pick on but Obama's speech to kids and Michele Obama's short wearing pics taken on Vacation!"

You're right!! Now that we killed Obamacare, and are picking off his radical appointees (Van Jones anyone?), we have to go after the smaller stuff.

Mwahahahahahah!!!

THE HORROR!

Posted by: cobblehiller at September 8, 2009 2:05 PM

to be totally honest, i think the right wing is reacting ridiculously to obama's every move because 1) the extremists are the most noticeable. if you interview 100 people, you're bound to find one nutjob quote and 2) the right wing is responding similar to people to the extreme left acted during the 8 years of GWB. the other side is always going to complain about the president.

Posted by: CG_ups at September 8, 2009 2:06 PM

CH and DH, what I like about Denver is that you could bike almost everyday of the year there. It may snow alot but that is usually gone by the evening commute. Austin gets hot but it is a fun town. The only gangs in Denver are the crazy broncos fans, and they are're usually to distracted/drunk.

Posted by: DeLepp at September 8, 2009 2:08 PM

Bxgirl, I'm trying to find a 36" square table that has an deep ebony/wenge finish or is unfinished so I can stain it that shade. I'm too picky for my own good!

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at September 8, 2009 2:09 PM

"Next thing you know, he'll be telling them to get a passbook and open a savings account!!"

Obama wants our countries children to bail out the banking industry? Doesn't he realize it's our nations youth that will ultimately pay the price for these lax regulations and abuses of power? Now he's trying to make matters worse by asking them to fuel it with their allowances?

Incredulous!!

Posted by: TownhouseLady at September 8, 2009 2:09 PM

CG-ups, I dunno, the 'noise level' seems awfully loud to me right now. It's actually felt frightening to me at times over the past few months. I mean frightening in the sense that there could be major violence over these matters. The tone is going way past the usual complaint dept of the opposite party.

Posted by: cobblehiller at September 8, 2009 2:09 PM

Hmm, good points DeLepp, and another nice thing is that the mountains are right there. And there are some cool towns to visit nearby, and a lot of good music goes through Denver.

Posted by: cobblehiller at September 8, 2009 2:11 PM

CH;

To tell you the truth, I haven't followed this whole "school speech" issue that closely. From the bits I've read, folks are upset about two things:

-according to the original plan, after the children heard his speech, they would be asked to write an essay along the lines of "What can I do to help President Obama achieve his goals"

-apparently the advanced planning on this was not well done, and the local school districts were not consulted, and they are in a snit about it.

Again, I'm not positive, because I haven't covered the issue that closely.

Posted by: benson at September 8, 2009 2:11 PM

portland is awesome but i think after new york, it might be a bit boring. it's tiny comparitively speaking. maybe a couple of neighborhoods to go out at night versus the kerbillion here. that said, the outdoor stuff is awesome. mt hood is a 40 min drive from downtown and is completely insane. great skiing / snowboarding most of the year with golf for a few months during the summer (or mountainbiking down the trails which is also awesome). seemed relatively diverse considering it's tiny size. i like it better than seattle, but that's just my opinion. quick shot up to vancouver and north for more amazing wintersports.

Posted by: CG_ups at September 8, 2009 2:12 PM

DH, I lived in Seattle and visited Portland enough times to know you'll like Seattle more. Seattle is more than just the city itself. Like Manhattan has its neighboring boroughs, Seattle has its version or neighboring boroughs of interest. one other plus is Seattle is closer to Vancouver - where "fusion" takes on a different meaning (in the form of hot hot inter racial "talent"). Seattle weather is not the greatest but its not down-right depressing like it's in Portland.

Posted by: more4less at September 8, 2009 2:13 PM

as a moderate, i feel the noise from both sides, and i can't say that one has been better than the other. i've been pretty grossed out by extremes from both sides.

CG_ups, "you pig!" - guess you finally remember the chubby Asian guy from the gathering.

for the benefit of DH, please vouch that I'm speaking of the truth regarding the inter-racial girls there in Vancouver.

DH, tons of bars in Vancouver have hot hot bartenders who are Italian Asians. Sizzling HOT

"Now he's trying to make matters worse by asking them to fuel it with their allowances?"

THL, smirk!!

Posted by: cobblehiller at September 8, 2009 2:25 PM

benson- the exact line was "help the President" not help President Obama. It was a generic line and had Bush used it, you wouldn't have said boo! And a reading of the speech and everything associated with it shows no political bias whatsoever.

C'hiller- i agree, The level of hysteria is frightening. When people bring arms (legal or not) to a Town Hall meeting where the President will be, we have seriously lost all semblance of common sense. When one party actively encourages disrespecting the President's Office (he's no longer the POTUS, but the head Democrat) we are seriously close to inciting violence and the undermining our entire country and the principles it was founded on. We may have hated Bush but no one was proposing to actively work to destroy everything he wants to accomplish. We don't think like a country anymore. We think like a bunch of immature brats in a playground.

"When one party actively encourages disrespecting the President's Office..."

Truth be told, we did that to GWB. Often. And unashamedly. Just sayin....

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at September 8, 2009 2:28 PM

I've never understood leather furniture. But then again, with cats, it's a dangerous prospect anyway. I just picture hot summer days when you wind up sticking to the darn things!

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at September 8, 2009 2:29 PM

As weird as it sounds, after spending the 2nd long weekend in RI area, that's the only other place I would settle in outside of NYC. I absolutely love the Newport and Warwick area. I don't care for hot weather much so the colder winters wouldn't bother me too much as long as I don't have to come out in 6 in the morning to shovel snow and just pay someone to do it, I am all for it.

I actually looked at properties there and it's pretty reasonable (compared to NYC) BUT why are property taxes so high in RI? Freaking tiny two bedroom cottage of the beaten path is 3,300 bucks a year in real estate taxes! what gives?

Posted by: Kensingtonian at September 8, 2009 2:29 PM

i was joking M4L (sort of! haha). but yes, the people in vancouver are extremely attractive.

Posted by: CG_ups at September 8, 2009 2:31 PM

One of the unique aspects of NYC is low property taxes, thanks to the large base of commercial business here (that kicks in its share).

Posted by: benson at September 8, 2009 2:32 PM

Why thank you, Benson! And now I'm afraid I must duck out of this argument before I get hit with a flying shoe! LOL J/K
:-)

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at September 8, 2009 2:33 PM

Snappy, leather is preferred if you have wife and young child who spills stuff on sofa all the time. Same reason I got leather seats in the car. If not for that, I prefer cloth - more color, pattern, etc selection and it looks better.

Posted by: more4less at September 8, 2009 2:35 PM

Thanks CG :) You are quite cool yourself!

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at September 8, 2009 2:35 PM

Snappy, you're so right about the GWB bashing comment.

Kens, most places you'll find have much higher taxes than the NYC area where the ppty taxes are unusually low but, high sales tax. It's a good trade off because tourists help pay the taxes through the commercial/retail industry.

Posted by: TownhouseLady at September 8, 2009 2:36 PM

It's not disrespect when you call someone out for lying, cheating & lawbreaking when he is guilty of all those things.

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at September 8, 2009 2:39 PM

Kens, don't forget NYC spanks us via the lovely 3.5-4% income tax

Posted by: more4less at September 8, 2009 2:39 PM

snappy- yes we did, but it was a tad different than what's going on now. Some of these people are advocating taking matters into their own hands and have no problem using racism or outright lying to get their way. There's disagreement and there's incitement. Plus we had 8 years of Bush so we had more than enough time to see how badly he was botching everything. We advocating voting him out, and not bringing down the government so as to take back power.

it's kind of ironic how either side is convinced that they are different when they do the same thing. this won't make me very popular but both sides have valid complaints about current and past presidents and both sides have had RIDICULOUS complaints about current and past presidents. Some of the stuff again st GWB was true, but some was equally as ludicrous as what is launched against obama. for real. hard to believe but true. that's why even though i am grossed out by the far right, i could never quite hop full over into the left. hence i am the mythical moderate.

Biff, it about freaking time you showed to the OT. Hey, you & family back in NYC already or you posting in Montreal?

Posted by: more4less at September 8, 2009 2:44 PM

Perhaps not, Arkady, but, rightly or wrongly, he was labeled as stupid, a laughing stock, etc. Keith Olberman (who I love by the by) had a field day for 8 years painting him as the head clown. Many dems who didn't really have a platform per se were fine with just saying basically that we should destroy everything GWB tries to get done if for no other reason than that he is GWB. That certainly meets my definition of undermining a president, our nation, etc. (I'm totally pointing a finger at myself in all of this too, because I was always eager to get in line and call him an ass, among other things.) I think that when one side has a pres they like, the noise from the other side is more audible than when they are on the opposing side. It's kinda like that thing where they say most people can't detect their own body odor but heaven forbid a rank person stand downwind of you!

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at September 8, 2009 2:44 PM

Re the NYTimes endorsement thread...several people called Jscheff out on it for painting an improper/incomplete picture as to what that candidate actually stood for and cited examples. I think a little fact checking may have proved him wrong in his statements, therefore it disappeared.

snaps- I still have to disagree re then and now. We had a lot we could actually point to and Bush did himself no favors (remember Mission Accomplished?). His policies put us in a huge amount of debt, was responsible for close to 5000 military deaths (not to mention the thousands of terribly wounded), did nothing to make us safe, decreased the separation between Church and State, sold out to big corporate interests- when he first got into office, despite How he got into office, the country adopted pretty much a wait and see approach. I certainly did. I was even a bit hopeful because he seemed to have a good record as governor of Texas.

But the second Obama got into office, the right has gone for the throat. It is very much over the top and the man has not been in office a year. They aren't even waiting to see if he can pull us out of trouble. They want trouble so they can get him out of office. There is a big difference.

Hey M4L. Sorry, been very busy today. Drove to Montreal on Saturday and then enjoyed a 9 hour drive back in stop and go traffic yesterday. I don't know how much longer I could have put up with all of the yelling, rude behaviour and constant requests for bathroom breaks. And that was just Mrs. C!!! The Champettes were playing and laughing hysterically the whole time, but even that got annoying. Fortunately, a combination of an extended stop in Lake George (a nice place that is edging towards Niagara Falls-esque tackiness) and DVDs kept things pretty much under control

Right, bxgrl. GWB got into office because the Supremes said so, not the people. But, still, he was given a chance but he blew it. This time the GOP has baldly stated that they want to negate everything Obama asks for - even when it's congruent w/ their own desires. I don't think anyone can find quotes of sitting Dem politicians calling for "death tickets" on a Rep. president as happened a week ago. The ugliness now is being fomented by supposedly reasonable people in the public eye & it's quite frightening to me.

The real problem with President Obama talking to the high school kids directly today is that he's talking to the wrong crowd.
He should be speaking to the 1 year olds, since it 's these infants and their children that will be paying off the huge debt he's wants to leave behind.

why conservatives are mad

1. unsustainable debt/gdp ratios. congressional budget office states this not me.

2. willful restructuring of society in the image of failed previous societies or in direct opposition to the historical models of success.

3. disingenous attempt at healthcare reform,
how do we know this?
because any serious attempt at healthcare reform will include reform of the legal system as well as the medical.

4. willful disregard for the capitalist system which is the economic engine of our society (also see appt. of Van Johnson, self-avowed communist)

that's for starters.

"Right, bxgrl. GWB got into office because the Supremes said so, not the people..."

I feel compelled to point out that the official results in Florida in 2000, after 3 recounts involving lawyers for both sides, revealed that George W. Bush was indeed the winner of that Presidential election. Even the NYTimes had to admit it, although they printed on page 16 if I recall, several months later.

as far as winning the plurality of the vote, Gore won more individual votes, but Bush won more states (35 states out of 50).
We have an electoral system to ensure that the smaller states have a say in voting in the President. if not, all the presidents would be picked by California, New York and Florida alone.

Posted by: Legion at September 8, 2009 3:21 PM

the people who scare me the most are the people who can't see that both sides are doing it. yikes.

Posted by: CG_ups at September 8, 2009 3:21 PM

legion- first, you need to get all the facts, not just one party's talking points (Dem or Rep).

He inherited a massive debt from the Bush Administration and no one taking office after Bush would be able to do much without some very painful choices that will affect us over the long term. In fact the bad effects over the long term are thanks to Bush.

I agree the legal profession needs an overhaul too- but the man has been in office 9 months. It took us 8 years to get to this really low point. Are we honestly expecting anyone to fix it in 9 months?

That capitalist system which is the engine of our economy needs an oil change. Agressive greed is the reason we are in the spot we're in. Capitalism without ethical, legal or moral limits is no better than Communism. It's just different. I'm waiting for commonsenseism from everyone. From anyone.

Posted by: bxgrl at September 8, 2009 3:22 PM

according to the analysis of the census numbers, approximately 90-92% of Americans have healthcare.
you make it sound like only 9 percent have healthcare.
again, talk to the facts not to the emotion.

why do you think Obama is on the ropes with this healthcare issue? he hasn't the support of the "poor" on this who already have insurance, the middle class, by a large majority have healthcare, and of course the wealthy are wealthy.

Where's his support except from the most diehard anti-capitalists.
sure the system has to be fixed to include those that don't have it, but not at the expense of our entire healthcare system which has taken two centuries to build.

Snappy!! I just tinkled a little. I seriously couldn't catch my breath from example #3.

Here is #308 for anyone who's not easily offended by very profane lyrics:

http://tinyurl.com/lpk4na

Posted by: TownhouseLady at September 8, 2009 3:40 PM

"When one party actively encourages disrespecting the President's Office..."

"Truth be told, we did that to GWB. Often. And unashamedly. Just sayin...."

I dunno, snappy, I've thought and said some pretty nasty things about GWB over the course of his presidency. I think, however, that I would have stopped short of demanding that my daughter be allowed to skip school so as not to have to hear the president speak, no matter who was president. The political right is usually the "America, love it or leave it" crowd, which seems quite the opposite of wanting to prevent schoolkids from listening to the president.

Legion, I don't want to get into a big argument about Bush v. Gore. There were many issues as to whether and how various aspects of the recount were to be done. Rightly or wrongly, a majority of 5 picked the method and parameters most likely to produce an eked out win for W in FL, which, of course, meant the entire election. The decision was completely devoid of generally applicable legal principle, which is why the majority itself wrote that the decision was to be of no precedential value.

Suffice to say, it was an extremely close election nationally and in Fl., and its outcome hinged on an after the fact determination of which rules to apply to the count. Even so, to close the circle on Snappy's point, although liberals were prone to challenge and even ridicule W, I don't think I know anyone who would have been afraid to let his/her child hear him speak. However he got there, he was president.

Posted by: slopefarm at September 8, 2009 3:40 PM

Posted by: CG_ups at September 8, 2009 3:40 PM

OMG. From a book on soccer - we have to ban this from our schools:

Attacking Principle
Penetration: Advancing the ball past opposing players by dribbling, passing and shooting.

The attacking principle of penetration ultimately leads us to achieving our attacking objective - SCORE!

Posted by: Biff Champion at September 8, 2009 3:41 PM

Your percentages are wrong. Its closer to 18% and the census bureau only counts those who are uninsured for a full year so when they took there count if you weren't uninsured a full year at the time, you weren't counted. No matter if you were uninsured then and possibly still uninsured now.

Frankly, if worrying about healthcare for everyone, education and any other quality of life over money issue makes me an "anti-capitalist", fine with me. Compassion is priceless.

I can't bear to even read your posts at times. So tell me, how are philanthropic organizations doing right now? Hmm. How many fired employees, shuttered their doors or cut back severely on giving? Sober up over there! The markets, the SEC, Government oversight, and the financial services companies need more than a 'tweak'.

The Right column story in the Sunday NYT told me all I needed to know. http://tiny.cc/a6tQ6 The mere fact that financial services companies are even THINKING about making money off Life Insurance policies [on top of the money the Insurance companies are already making, but I digress...] shows that we are a greedy and cutthroat country. Legion- in MN there was dubious votes and tactics on Coleman's side as well. The recount for Bush was decided in COurt and you should recall Katharine Harris- an extreme partisan -was in charge of it. Not to mention Jeb was governor. There was a lot of questionable stuff happening in the recount.

I can't stand the "truthers." That said, Van Jones hardly did anything to deserve getting hounded out of office. Let's do a mental experiment. Suppose there was a conservative or Republican administration official, who, in a press interview, talked about his background and his association with far right-wing radicals. Specifically, suppose he said that while he was in prison, he took up with Neo-Nazis for 10 years. Would you have given him or her a pass? I think not.

Van Jones freely spoke of his being associated with communist and marxist movement for a period of 10 years.

What is the difference? Please explain.

I had some sort of sweet roll once and it had bacon and brown sugar in it.

It was at one of those big cafeteria restaurants somewhere in Houston, Tx.

It was HEAVEN.

I should try to adapt a recipe and try to recreate it.

Hey Legion, how would you propose to 'include those who don't have it'? Because that is what it's all about, right? I don;t remember you stating how you would like to see this happen, I could be wrong.

As far as the 9/11 theorists go, I wouldn't blame that entirely on the left. There seem to be plenty of theories and plenty of nuts on each side.

Legion, It took a loooooooooooooong time for Norm Coleman to let it go. Wish the Gore team had fought that hard. As for letting elections go, tell it to the birthers. And I can't believe that you would respond to my post, in which I discussed the importance of teaching children to listen the president whether you agree with the president or not, by suggesting that I am a 9-11 conspiracy theorist. Where do you get that? Your view of life on the other side of the political aisle is like the old new Yorker maps. After New Jersey, it's just a plain, some mountains and an ocean with a few islands in it, and after Joe Lieberman, it's all trotskyites, anarchists and conspiracy theorists.

Benson- oh please. Once again you are doing your fantasy scenario writing thing. At least Van Jones turned his life around. You should really read up on Van Jones before you decide anything. Communist? Frankly we have far more to worry about from right wing extremists than we do about this country going communist. This is a guy who accomplished a lot of good things- and in case you've forgotten, in this country we are allowed to have political differences (But that said, Nazism is unforgivable. As a system of governance and as a concept.) And as a left wing radical, he fought for the rights of poor people and the disenfranchised. That's hardly a fight of the far right, is it?

DH -i don't know where to start there are so many interesting places in this country where you could probably move and not be totally bored. some ideas:

new orleans - granted i haven't been since after the hurricane, but it was pretty fun down there. def not boring!

i prefer boulder, CO to denver. it's smaller, prettier and feels less sprawling and mall-like to me.

i have a bunch of friends in nyc from atlanta, and they are all really cool. seems like it might be a fun place to live for a little while and save some $. most of them are into the nyc music scene and its big down there, though i haven't been. speaking of a music scene nashville, TN is pretty cool and i also like austin, TX.

santa fe, new mexico is gorgeous, though i hear it's a big addict recovery scene? also has an interesting art scene i think. could be fun.

oregon is also gorgeous. went to portland once and really like it, though it seems kinda small to me.

are there any other cities that you've been to that you like?

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at September 8, 2009 4:32 PM

Denton,
funny you should ask,

this is how you include those that don't have medical coverage into the current system.

-start with tort reform; loser pays law like in the UK, no more frivilous law suits that run up defensive medicine costs and add billions to the yearly costs of healthcare.

-start opening up insurance competition to interstate competition, healthcare plans in Iowa competing with plans from Virginia, watch costs come down.

-address massive fraud in current Medicare/Medicaid system, it is in the billions yearly, stronger laws and penalties for all involved.

-expand Health Savings Accounts/Major medical plans, to put the buying power in the hands of the individual as well as the healthcare dollars. the beauty of this system is that you are rewarded for good health and not going to a doctor because you keep the money in your account, in your name to be rolled over yearly until medicare age. It's your money , pre-tax.

-incentivize healthcare coverage for small employers who provide 80% of jobs with discounts and tax credits.

-stop paying the healthcare for people who are not citizens of this nation, encourage other nations to take responsibility for their citizen's healthcare.

I can go on if you wish.

santa fe is WONDERFUL, gorgeous and nice amenities and new mexico food is so good (green chile, holla!) but it is quite expensive. there are a lot of wealthy east coast retirees there, and property, restaurants et al are all quite pricey (a lot more so than one would expect for being in the sticks). it's nice but wouldn't be a young professional guy's place to live, just visit, i would think.

Posted by: TownhouseLady at September 8, 2009 4:37 PM

slopefarm,

I only suggested the conspiracy truther thing after you continued to push the "questionable" election results in Florida in 2000.

simply ask yourself this question, did the 3 recounts, under the close observations of lawyers on both sides, obtain a consistent result?

answer; it did. in all three recounts in FL in 2000, Bush came out the winner, the state court stepped in only after the left wing continued to persist in it's attempts to do recount after recount.

that is the definintion of crazy; doing the same thing over and over and expecting to get a different result.

let 2000 go, If Gore were meant to win, he would have won decisively in Florida and with many more than 15 states. I'm not obsessing on Coleman losing the decisive Senate seat in Minn.

have you personally be effected by right wing extremists?

In fact, President Obama has chosen to continue the wiretapping that Bush implemented. I wonder what happened to the jack-booted Bush brownshirts who were supposed to break down your door in the night?

How small does a mandoline slice things? And is it labor intensive?

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at September 8, 2009 4:50 PM

Hi Legion:

You actually didn't answer the question. You answered the question of how to pay for a plan to cover everyone, but you didn't state the mechanism that you would prefer _to_ cover those who are not covered. Unless you are saying the guvment would fund those HSAs... I would have no problem with that.

Many, but admittedly not all, of the uninsured are unemployed. I believe the actual rate of people who are unemployed but looking plus those who are unemployed but have given up is in the 16% range.

I'm not convinced that tort reform will reduce health care costs (altho I am in favor of it). There's nothing that will force them to pass the savings along, it may just go into the pockets of the system. I see that all the time in mfg; I get something in that used to be made here, all of a sudden it's made in Mexico. When I call up the big companies to ask why my price hasn't decreased, I get the same old line of BS about 'being competitive', but I don't get the savings, they do.

I'm not convinced about the waste and fraud either. Every politician gets elected on the same platform, nothing ever happens.

But it is refreshing to see conservatives such as yourself, and John McCain (who I used to like pre-Palin) finally agree that there should be some form of health coverage for every American. That is a recent turn of events.

Posted by: bodhi_brooklyn at September 8, 2009 4:53 PM

Vague at best, yeah i know. I think the only way to decide is just start hopping on some airplanes and going places and try to find a place where i say "yeah, i could live here"

Posted by: dirty_hipster at September 8, 2009 4:54 PM

"by the way, if it was a war for oil, where's the oil now?"

Yeah Legion, I have to agree with you on that one.. pretty funny... the left can be as wacky as the right sometimes.

Oil was $30/bbl going in, closed today @$71.33, may have stayed at $120 if it wasn't for the economic collapse.

Posted by: denton at September 8, 2009 4:55 PM

Yeah, I just looked at a mandolin on Williams Sonoma site and it seems like just cutting the damned things would be less labor intensive than that.

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at September 8, 2009 4:55 PM

"How small does a mandoline slice things? And is it labor intensive?"

It depends on the blade that you put in. And this can be a pill, depending on the model that you buy. The good ones are a little pricey. There is labor involved, and unless you buy a good one, a knife is usually easier. I'd save my money and buy a GOOD knife, much more versatile and useful!

Snappy - A mandoline is very good for certain things but a waste of effort for mashed potatoes. A good knife is better. How small do you want to cut them? I just halve them - quarter them if they're huge.
I'd do Zabar's before B'way Panhandler. Really a shame Bridge Co. went under - they had great sales on knives.

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at September 8, 2009 5:03 PM

My advice Snappy? Keep the knives you have, and buy one really good 8" chef's knife and a really good Paring knife. Henckel's. They last forever, they sharpen nicely. You won't ever regret it. Then you can add on over the years - a serated bread knife or whatever. I have those three, and I never need anything else.

Posted by: cobblehiller at September 8, 2009 5:04 PM

You're much better off buying individual knives, not in a block. Start w/ one really good one - chef's knife. Don't get a sharpening gadget, get either a good steel or a stone. A decent knife holds its edge for a long while.

Posted by: Arkady at September 8, 2009 5:04 PM

legion- I have an unusually exaggerated fear of any extremist. And maybe not my personal rights, but in an example- my ex was back in NYC after 9-11 and took a picture of the Brooklyn Bridge. He was arrested for taking a picture. And yes- I personally know several right wing extremists who bought the Bush line big time. As you also well know, the rights that were undermined have to do with privacy- the government can pretty much use any excuse to keep tabs on you, courtesy of Homeland Security. The papers are filed with people whose rights have been infringed and their lives disrupted because the right wing and neocons suffered mass mass hysteria. What's the sense of calling thisthe Free World if we are doing what every other police state does- spy on ordinary citizens? (And you can ask gays, feminists and pro-choice people about the brownshirts.

War for oil? Who said that?

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at September 8, 2009 5:09 PM

Denton,
allow me to elaborate,
the savings to be gained by implementing those few reforms I stated have been estimated to not only cover the cost of including the uninsured into the ranks of the insured, but also continue to reduce healthcare costs over the long term by better efficiency.
There is no doubt that tort reform would help to reduce costs of medicine as most doctors will agree that many medical problems can be diagnosed clinically instead of going through the process of costly testing (MRI/CT/biopsies) for conditions that are well understood and can be treated accordingly, doctors tend to over-test and over-refer in order to save their asses in that one in a million case that may not be the norm.

the savings are passed along in the form decreased costs of operating an office. For example, an Ob/Gyn, no longer faced with 150thousand a year malpractice insurance, may no longer have to be forced to charge insurances 500 per visit, or those without insurance 500 per visit since the malpractice insurance has come down to a reasonable rate.

as far as waste and fraud, the day we give up on addressing this issue is the day we might as well give in to lawlessness. we manage to keep our society civil to a certain degree by a system of justice, obviously people will continue to feel that scaming the system is a viable alternative to work or honest practice, these people have to be delt with. Harsh penalties or exclusion from the governemnt system seems to work. we are talking billions after all.

As far as the mechanism of inclusion, the middle class folks who do not qualify for insurance coverage would now be open to any number of healthcare options, paying for healthcare would not be a horror with a reasonable premium schedule, like car insurance. States realizing decreased costs could be more generous in opening up their plans to higher earners. Remember, the poor are already covered as are the wealthy, we are talking about a group in the middle who earn money but not enough to pay for healthcare.

Posted by: Legion at September 8, 2009 5:10 PM

snappy, a year ago I decided to check out Japanese knives instead of Western knives, and have never looked back.

I use to have a mix of Sabatier, Meridien, and Henkels.

Right now I'm using Shun knives. What I've found tho, is that one particular Japanese knife is SO good that I seldom use much else. I could have skipped the set entirely.

The one I use most is a 7" Santuko with kullenschliffs on the blade. In addition to a boning knife, a long slicing knife, and a cheap serrated knife for tomatoes, cheese, and such, I'm done.

Here's a pic, and you can check them out at CH's rec, Broadway Panhandler.

You do need a different steel as the blade angle is different on Japanese knives v. Western knives.

brighton, that's funny, but no, it's a beer and apparently the new nickname for my hubby as per Biff and DH.

and speaking of special dictionary definitions, I love this one -

Boy, n.: a noise with dirt on it. ~Not Your Average Dictionary

WS has a Henckels Santoku for $89.95. Is it really worth that price? Is any other brand's Santoku cheaper but still high quality? Remember, I'm unemployed...can't go spendin' good beer money on a single knife! >LOL

"Jeesh! Their cheapest single knife in that brand is $54.95!!!"

Snappy, that's pretty damn cheap. A knife is a long term investment that can last decades if not a lifetime. Don't cheap out on a knife.

Bitter, I prefer to think of him as The Prince. Especially after reading the Uniform Delta definition of Pork Slap.

Yup, CG! I may be buying an apple corer to get me through until I'm employed again and can afford to say 'eff it! gimmme the $90 knife'!!!

snappy, usually, whether it's knives or attorneys, you get what you pay for.

After some experience in life, I've come to realize that it's a true statement. So I always get the best tools that I can, whether it's in the kitchen, the toolbox, or whatever, my advice would be if you have knives now but temporarily are low on funds, wait until you are better off and buy something good.

Posted by: denton at September 8, 2009 5:24 PM

I will definitely wait on the knives. Being unemployed I simply can't justify 100 bones on a single knife. Beer is another story :-) I'm off to start chopping potatos! Nite everyone!

bxgrl,
in all honesty, I have few illusions about our privacy rights, at least in this computer age.
on any given day, my e-z pass tells people where I crossed a bridge and when, and they even take a picture of my car for good measure,

on any given day, my cell phone company knows where I am and where I have been by the reflections off cell phone towers,

on any given day, my musings on chat rooms are monitored by the web host, by the NSA for keywords and any host of people with the right credentials

on any given day my photo is taken in the bank at the ATM

on any given day, my movements are monitored as I stroll along a busy avenue in Brooklyn, like Knickerbocker for instance which has police cams

on any given day, my image appears on the black and white screen in the manager's office in my local supermarket through that opaque dome which nobody notices anymore on the ceiling

on any given day somebody could easily have one of those tiny cameras hooked up at work to monitor my comings and goings, it's legal after all

on any given day my computer posts can be accessed by the computer support division at my job

in short, privacy is an illusion in this day and age,
everyone has a phone with a lens and everyone has a means of transmitting that image or information at light speed.
