GOOD MORNING ALL

Posted by: HOBOKENROCKS at September 4, 2009 9:17 AM

I was first.. OH YEA.. Today is going to be a good day.. Does anyone have a favorite paint color that they would like to share? I am painting my place and need some suggestions...

Posted by: HOBOKENROCKS at September 4, 2009 9:20 AM

Hoboken...I am in love with grays and chocolate browns. During the free Glidden giveaway, I got a can of "blue gray slate" that's very nice.

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at September 4, 2009 9:27 AM

How about "Loser Lemon."

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at September 4, 2009 9:27 AM

Which room???

I have rooms done in a very light gray, a light yellow, a sage, a colonial blue and a mango. All with white trim.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at September 4, 2009 9:29 AM

I love browns and grays too... Loser lemon is a color.. What paint company?

Posted by: HOBOKENROCKS at September 4, 2009 9:29 AM

had a freddy krueger freak-out on the M train this morning. im sitting there reading and look up and im the ONLY person in the subway car, then look in the next car over and it's completely empty as well! and that was at 9am! sometimes i take the M train if it arrives but normally take the R because i prefer the bucket seats and the vintage orange color. Sometimes like on days like today i wish my commute was 10x longer, it's the only place i get any reading done and i like people watching on the train, tho today there were no people thus the freddy krueger did i just wake up in a nightmare situation i had this morning! i guess everyone is gone for the weekend already? is everyone getting out early today? anyone have good plans? im cleaning out my closets. im a super neat freak and keep everything clean but my closets are always a mess and my drawers are even messier so i think im going to clean both this weekend and try to have a stoop sale tho im sure no one will even be around to buy anything.

BMs, harbor haze, a relaxing light blue grey.

Posted by: DeLepp at September 4, 2009 9:32 AM

living and dining room which are both open and get alot of light.. I have 6 windows on one side and FLOOR to ceiling windows on the other...

Posted by: HOBOKENROCKS at September 4, 2009 9:32 AM

The M was packed to the gills at 9:15. But of course that was in the back, as you know.

Posted by: lechacal at September 4, 2009 9:33 AM

Rob, I'm sure there will be plenty of folks around for a stoop sale. Stay-cations are all the rage now :)

seriously, avacado green and mustard. that shi+ is coming back again and all the people with their hideous granite countertops and stainless steal appliances are gonna look like a bunch of bell bottoms at a rap concert.

*rob*

Posted by: Butterfly at September 4, 2009 9:35 AM

no lechecal, i think youre lying out of your ass. the M could NOT have been packed to the gills at 915, unless everyone is a last minute betty rushing to work or something. it was EMPTY. i.e. NO one at 9:02 exactly, i looked at the clock!!! you also claim the R is always packed and it's always empty!

anyone interested in investigating this "housing asset renewal program" with me? base-case hypothesis: the city is using tax money to supplement the selling prices of condos, bailing out their developer friends and sourcing cheap luxury apartments for their supporters, all in the name of affordable housing and blight prevention.

HPD INVITES DEVELOPERS TO APPLY FOR HOUSING ASSET RENEWAL PROGRAM FUNDING

http://www.nyc.gov/html/hpd/html/pr2009/pr-07-30-09.shtml

google HARP, NOFA, etc.

Posted by: joe_the_bummer at September 4, 2009 9:41 AM

Then you could easily do something dark with all that light.... Go to the Benjamin Moore site and go through the fandeck....

http://www.benjaminmoore.com:80/bmpsweb/portals/bmps.portal?_nfpb=true&_windowLabel=contentrenderer_1_2&contentrenderer_1_2_actionOverride=%2Fbm%2Fcms%2FContentRenderer%2FrenderContent&contentrenderer_1_2NodeUUID=%2FBEA+Repository%2F306001&_pageLabel=fh_explorecolor

Try the browns, reds and greens at the far right end or the bright yellows on the far left

Also some of these paint sites have a few rooms where you can change the color in them

One of the Brooklyn brokers has this feature on their listings now as well. Anybody remember who???

DIBS, it would've been funny scene if you & I wrote the 4/5 train this morning. after getting onto the train, I noticed a long hair tall asian girl standing a few steps away. If you were there, I would be commenting she's tall, nice legs, nice dark long hair,.... Of course you would tell me to sit down cause she is actually a guy. think he's thai. good looking chap. probably plays on your team. Man, I could've watched you in action and take some notes on Da Man working it

Posted by: more4less at September 4, 2009 9:44 AM

Dave I think it was Brown Harris Stevens

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at September 4, 2009 9:45 AM

Joe, investigating in what way? What are you looking to find and to whom would you report your findings?

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at September 4, 2009 9:47 AM

m4l...i'm on vacation now....and it's slim pickins up here for "rice & beans" other than the partner. NYC better watch out when I return, especially long-haired Thai guys!!!!!!

Posted by: dirty_hipster at September 4, 2009 9:49 AM

Rob - What're you reading?

Posted by: Arkady at September 4, 2009 9:49 AM

arkady, right now im reading some book i found on a stoop a while back called Love Junkie by Rachel Resnick. it's sort of a memoir, it's good but im trying to rush through it so i can start reading Virtual Girl by Amy Thomson. i love free books on stoops. question tho, can bedbugs hide in books? im always worried about that. i usually will hit the book a few times on concrete before taking it inside but i dont know if that is good? i'd assume people are nice enough to not leave stuff out for the taking if they have bedbugs, but what if they dont know? also jeeeeeez have you seen how many mattresses in casings have been strewn on the sidestreets of center slope in the last few weeks? there is a notorious bedbug building that is adjacent to Playa on the corner of 5th avenue. they are always throwing stuff out and they do nicely write bedbugs on it, tho sometimes there is furniture out with no signs. dont take anything from that street (i always forget what street that is..) one of the first named streets or something. it's the skankiest side street in park slope proper i think.

Posted by: Butterfly at September 4, 2009 9:54 AM

DIBS halstead had something like that.. Thanks all for your suggestions..

Posted by: HOBOKENROCKS at September 4, 2009 9:55 AM

rob - could have easily been one of those times when like 5 trains come back to back, and you got the last one of those, and then it takes 10 minutes for another train to come, and by the time it does everyone is sweating and pacing up and down and looking at their watches and getting pissed off. When I got the M/R platform at 9th St there were a lot of people standing there looking pretty uptight.

Posted by: lechacal at September 4, 2009 9:56 AM

It will be unless you STFU. :-P

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at September 4, 2009 9:57 AM

I have a friend who zaps used books in her microwave.

Posted by: Arkady at September 4, 2009 9:58 AM

haha DIBS ;)

Posted by: dirty_hipster at September 4, 2009 9:59 AM

Snappy if there is one I will find a city council candidate who's against it and tell everyone to vote for him/her. what bugs me is that it appears to be totally unchallenged in the press, but yesterday we ranted against it 10-0, which is not normal here. it's clearly corrupt when you think about it for 10 seconds, but council candidates are boasting about their support of it.

then again I'm open to the possibility that the foreclosure process will take SO long that it is worth the money to just get them sold. It's just that in that case there are calculation issues -- 50K each will not get them sold.

smells crappy. thought someone else would be bored today.

Posted by: joe_the_bummer at September 4, 2009 9:59 AM

There was a wonderful BM color called Putty -- a gray taupe that really took on the undertones of the colors around it. I am lookign for something like it again.

Grays -- with undertones of anything -- are wonderful backdrops. And do well in either bright daylight or at night with artifial light.

Posted by: BH76 at September 4, 2009 10:00 AM

My living room is painted a color called dry mustard. Its a beautiful goldeny-green that sometimes looks gold and sometimes truer green. I love that it changes- but it is one of those colors that needs several coats to cover. My bedroom is a medium/deep gray with white and the kitchen is a rich deep red. I'm a color junkie so some rooms are due to be changed again.

Posted by: bxgrl at September 4, 2009 10:03 AM

I'm wondering along with you Joe if there is a politician to be found willing to come out against it.

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at September 4, 2009 10:04 AM

WHOA! arkady that is an awesome idea! now i know what to do with that that damn Hello Kitty microwave!!!! thank YOU!

joe, snappy- not if they smell money. May take a big grass roots ampaign. I can't wait for the primary- there's a real chance we can get Al Vann out this time.

Posted by: bxgrl at September 4, 2009 10:06 AM

Painting is addictive. A few years ago I decided (like a damned fool) that I wanted a very soft, pale pink in my bedroom with a chocolate brown accent wall. The chocolate looks nice. The pink looks like freakin' bubble gum :-( And, my dad did a horrible paint job to boot! Sigh.

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at September 4, 2009 10:06 AM

My rooms are all white w/ a nicotine overlay giving them a warm, rich patina.

Posted by: Arkady at September 4, 2009 10:07 AM

i recently painted my bedroom a pale green and brown but unfortunately it only looks good in daylight. at night the brown wall looks reddish and the green walls look, i dont even know. but i use pink lightbulbs at night so that's def. why. with regular candescent light it looks okay and truer to the colors, but not as good in regular daylight. i totally picked the wrong shades for the colors i wanted tho.

Anyone else a fan of audiobooks? You can get a lot of the classics for free at Librivox.org. The books are not read by professional readers and sometimes the sound is a bit off, but hey, it's free!

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at September 4, 2009 10:08 AM

ROFL Arkady!!! I get that nicotine patina as well. But, it's time again for wall washing so it will soon be gone.

HR...just don't use HD Behr brand or whatever Lowe's own brand is...they are really crap coverage...Get Sherwin Williams, Benj Moore or another professional brand.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at September 4, 2009 10:11 AM

Snappy, i can't endorse it anymore than i normally do, but the Mr. CLean Magic Eraser is AMAZING and gets the gook off everything. the problem is that they disintegrate very easily and fast so you will go thru about 10-20 erasers for one full room's washing which is about.. maybe . ugh. 2.59ish for 2 erasers... so like yeah you do the math.

*rob*

Posted by: Butterfly at September 4, 2009 10:14 AM

arkady wins ... Just kidding.. Get the magic eraser out and clean them walls.. Those Magic erasers are the best... Clean almost anything... Easy..

DIBS I usually go with Benjamin Moore but I was thinking about going with Farrow and Ball till I saw their price per gallon.. My goodness.. I think I will stick to BM...

Posted by: HOBOKENROCKS at September 4, 2009 10:16 AM

who's al vann? I am new to this. two years of banking depression have forced me to find new hobbies (I am also learning chinese). the only real contender for district 33 (including PS, heights, boerum, burg, GP) whose position I can't find is Ken Baer. Also Isaac Abraham, but he is at least a part-time developer, so I doubt he's on our side.

The five others have come out in support of "HARP". If Ken's on our side, I'll tell everyone. I'm sure it's dangerous for a politician to be seen as "against affordable housing".

Posted by: joe_the_bummer at September 4, 2009 10:17 AM

If you buy the double strength MAGIC Erasers they last alot longer.. I HAD A day laborer clean up the walls to my rental home with a four pack.. I had a eggshell finish so it made it easier... Flat is going to be a PITA...

Posted by: HOBOKENROCKS at September 4, 2009 10:19 AM

I do use the magic eraser for some things, but when it comes down to wall washing, I don't feel like it's done until I've wrapped a damp towel with a smidge of antibacterial dish liquid around a broom and get to scrubbin'.

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at September 4, 2009 10:19 AM

OMG my comment in the Cougar thread... dave, i totally DONT mean you! hahah

*rob*

Posted by: Butterfly at September 4, 2009 10:19 AM

bxgrl - That's amazing - both heartening & disheartening.

Posted by: Arkady at September 4, 2009 10:23 AM

You can also add a bit of orange oil to your walls before the magic eraser.. The walls look and smell clean after this.. I had to have my baseboards painted though.. And the doors..

Posted by: HOBOKENROCKS at September 4, 2009 10:24 AM

Orange oil....can that be found anywhere? Any particular brand?

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at September 4, 2009 10:27 AM

I bought a magic eraser but haven't used it yet- so you guys are telling me it really actually works? Kewl.

Posted by: bxgrl at September 4, 2009 10:27 AM

Bxgirl, a magic eraser will get rid of marks like nothing else! It is magic :)

Mr B is back with his controversial topics!

Posted by: dirty_hipster at September 4, 2009 10:34 AM

it totally works bxgirl, but you have to wet it. my dumb ass self used it DRY for the longest time being all like ugh this doesnt really work..! duh i also freaked out my upstairs neighbor when i told her i took a bath with a magic eraser once. she said there is bleach in it! i didnt feel the bleach, but i used it with body soap so i guess it diluted it.

*rob*

Posted by: Butterfly at September 4, 2009 10:35 AM

POSTGASMED.. lol. Seriously buy the double strength ones.. I cleaned my grout with those.. Those are stronger and better than the regular strength ones.... Magic Erasers are truly MAGIC...

Posted by: HOBOKENROCKS at September 4, 2009 10:36 AM

I'll do that rob- I probably would have done the same thing. HR- cleans grout? Even better!

Posted by: bxgrl at September 4, 2009 10:39 AM

That bayridge thread is the HSF thread in a thin, poorly executed disguise.

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at September 4, 2009 10:39 AM

The double strength one does... One of my bathrooms is done in white subway tile and along with some orange oil it looks brand new.. Seriously I still thank the guy who told me about the MAGIC ERASER.. My wife is so much happier..

Posted by: HOBOKENROCKS at September 4, 2009 10:42 AM

bxgrl the grout has to have been sealed.. If not you will have problems..

Posted by: HOBOKENROCKS at September 4, 2009 10:43 AM

Where do I get this orange oil stuff????

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at September 4, 2009 10:44 AM

*rob*

Posted by: Butterfly at September 4, 2009 10:44 AM

Orange oil is sold in most home depots and pathmarks. I get mine at kings...

Posted by: HOBOKENROCKS at September 4, 2009 10:46 AM

Snaps - Most hardware stores & some supermarkets sell Orange. I haven't had much luck w/ it.

Posted by: Arkady at September 4, 2009 10:46 AM

Ahh.

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at September 4, 2009 10:48 AM

Rob, I may be banned by lunchtime. That bayridge mansion thread is starting to piss me off!

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at September 4, 2009 10:49 AM

If grout wasn't sealed than you will need bleach and a toothbrush.. I don't recommend using bleach and the magic eraser together.. All my grout has been sealed.. Still I like the smell of orange oil over the other leading cleaning agents.

Posted by: HOBOKENROCKS at September 4, 2009 10:51 AM

Posted by: Butterfly at September 4, 2009 11:01 AM

Rob...best car I ever saw...

Years ago my dad and I were driving down the street in Pittsburgh. Up came a car beside us. It was an old school brown station wagon with deep brown paneling on the side. The wagon was filled to the brim with junk. The car was leaning to left and seemed to be balancing on only the left rear wheel. On the back bumper, which was rusted and hanging down a bit, was a bumper sticker that simply read: TITTIES AND BEER

ROFL

True story I swear!

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at September 4, 2009 11:06 AM

Thanks, HR- I love the smell of orange too.

Posted by: bxgrl at September 4, 2009 11:10 AM

Back in Vermont there are super liberal bumper stickers on all of the subarus. I used to drive an old diesel VW rabbit, and I went down to the local hippie bumper sticker place (herk if you are reading - "Everybody's Books" on main street) and bought a bunch of the usual lefty bumper stickers and cut them up to say other things. I can't remember all of them, but I think I bought:

- You Can't Hug Children With Nuclear Arms
- Meat is Murder
- Feed the World: End Hunger
- Pro-Choice and Proud of It
- World Peace (with a peace sign)

And I cut them up and rearranged them on the back of my shitty old VW rabbit to say:

- Feed the World Meat
- Pro Nuclear Arms and Proud of It
- You Can't Hug Children with World Peace

And then I would drive around town past all of the subarus and get death stares.

My fave license plate was a Le Car that had the tag, Le Plate".

Posted by: Arkady at September 4, 2009 11:14 AM

The forum thread with the guy who wants to fire his contractor is getting really annoying. OP is one of those nitpicky, antsy, control freaky guys looking for anything to be pissed off about. I can't stand people like that- they've made my life miserable in the past.

Posted by: bxgrl at September 4, 2009 11:18 AM

Funniest bumper sticker I ever saw: Heart Disease: God's Revenge for Eating His Animal Friends

Posted by: infinitejester at September 4, 2009 11:19 AM

Remember when states started banning license plates that said MILF or ITMF (impeach the motherfucker) - re GWB? Ha! I wanted to smack some of those moms upside the head about the MILF one. I recall reading an article where one woman complained that she didn't want to be driving in the car with her 8yr old daughter and have to explain what a MILF was. WHY THE HELL WOULD YOU TELL HER, YA DIPSHIT!!!??? Argh. People expect government to do their parenting for them and it's disgusting.

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at September 4, 2009 11:20 AM

Jester, I have a friend who has that on a tshirt!

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at September 4, 2009 11:20 AM

I like the x-tian fish symbol that's composed of the word "Darwin" & has little feet on it.

Posted by: Arkady at September 4, 2009 11:26 AM

We need a PLUSA bumper sticker...."PLUSAs Do It Better" or something :) But, I don't have a car....I could attach it to my bum!

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at September 4, 2009 11:29 AM

mc mansion thread getting toasty!

Posted by: dirty_hipster at September 4, 2009 11:35 AM

I wonder if there's a single topic that could be posted & get unanimous agreement - not neutrality, agreement. Even brownies bring out dissention!

Posted by: Arkady at September 4, 2009 11:37 AM

LOL lechecal those are good. someone needs to get one of those little yellow signs you attach to the back of windows that say Crotchfruit On Board

*rob*

Posted by: Butterfly at September 4, 2009 11:38 AM

What's your problem DH? Do us both a favor and stop addressing any post to me. You'll do fine.

Posted by: bxgrl at September 4, 2009 11:39 AM

Arkady, we had the one yesterday about affordable housing being made from the failed condo developments. And I believe that was a first! I think the only way we can get consistent agreement is if we discuss "Is the grass green?" or "Do cars run on gas?" LOL But, then again, I can totally see Rob popping up to say that grass is really purple :)

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at September 4, 2009 11:40 AM

Yeah, Snaps. I thought of "The sun is shining" but Chicken would post from London saying WTF.

Posted by: Arkady at September 4, 2009 11:42 AM

Posted by: bxgrl at September 4, 2009 11:44 AM

I'm gonna go do some pre-pain foot rubbing and soaking and see if the board dies down a bit....now I'm like Rob...I smell a banning!

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at September 4, 2009 11:45 AM

Even moreso than Maureen Dowd, I think the writer I agree with most often is Frank Rich. I don't recall ever disagreeing with his opinion. His column alone is worth the price of my subscription.

"oh yes- if you like your babes without brains."

Works for me!!

;-)

Posted by: benson at September 4, 2009 12:58 PM

Ann Coulter is a MORON. I saw her debate Bill Maher recently, and she couldn't even pretend to keep up.

That's all.

Posted by: brighton beoch at September 4, 2009 12:59 PM

Bill Maher seems like he would be difficult to debate.

Posted by: dirty_hipster at September 4, 2009 1:01 PM

benson- *rolling my eyes in despair* :-)

Posted by: bxgrl at September 4, 2009 1:02 PM

Brighton;

I'm sure you went to the debate with an open mind.....

Posted by: benson at September 4, 2009 1:03 PM

I love Bill Maher too.

I was really disappointed when Dennis Miller did a 180 and joined the Dark Side. I read a couple of his books that he wrote years ago and was impressed. Now I can't stand him.

Posted by: Biff Champion at September 4, 2009 1:03 PM

I am so ambivalent about Bill Maher. I think he's brilliantly sarcastic but sometimes he does that at the cost of his guest being able to say something. I really want to see the interaction between him and his guests but sometimes I get the feeling they are just there to play second banana.

Posted by: bxgrl at September 4, 2009 1:05 PM

Bill Maher and Ann Coulter are two sides of the same coin, which is why they agreed to that "debate".

Neither has an interest in real intellectual debates, or explorations. They are more interested in creating controversy to garner ratings. They view their positions as a means to an end.

To put it in a sports analogy: they belong to the WWF.

Posted by: benson at September 4, 2009 1:07 PM

biff- so what made him change?

benson - please don't tell me you take Ann COulter seriously? The woman said we Jews need to be "perfected" by becoming Christians, and that America would be better off if everyone were Christian. Even FoxNews called her a "slash and burn" journalist (using the word journalist loosely, I am sure).

Nancy Grace: "Nightly Report to Frighten White Women"

Posted by: infinitejester at September 4, 2009 1:12 PM

Nancy Grace is one pissed off white lady!

Posted by: East New York at September 4, 2009 1:13 PM

I can't stand Nancy Grace. Hate her.

"biff- so what made him change?"
bxgrl, dunno if it was one particular thing or a series of things. I believe it was just after 9/11 and he got caught up in the WMD shit that Bush Jr. was selling, despite the lack of WMD, despite the lack of threat by Iraq to the US and despite the lack of ties between the Al Qaeda terrorists and Iraq. I lost all respect for him at that point.

Posted by: Biff Champion at September 4, 2009 1:16 PM

If Nancy Grace is not a frustrated cougar, she sure does a good impersonation of one.

Posted by: benson at September 4, 2009 1:17 PM

You too, ENY!

Posted by: cobblehiller at September 4, 2009 1:26 PM

Don't like many TV commentators. As Benson said, they are generally too focused on yelling rather than debating.

I don't often get to watch it but I do enjoy the 'Fox All Stars' segment at the end of the Fox News 6pm show. Well balanced and they all seem to respect each other. Charles Krauthammer is my favorite because he is clear and original - don't always agree (he's much more of a neocon than I am), but always see where he is coming from.

Posted by: etson at September 4, 2009 1:27 PM

Have a great one ENY!

"just because they couldnt FIND weapons of mass destruction doesnt mean they are not there. they do definitely exist tho."

Rob, what the HELL are you talking about? Have you been watching those clips of Chris Wallace interviewing Cheney unsupervised again.

Posted by: cobblehiller at September 4, 2009 1:44 PM

Nancy Grace is a talking head on CNN - she frightens me.

Posted by: dirty_hipster at September 4, 2009 1:44 PM

Yeah, Rob, every country is trying to develop them but there weren't any where GWB said there were - it was all lies (& they knew they were lying.)

Posted by: Arkady at September 4, 2009 1:45 PM

In 2006, Grace was involved in an incident when a 21-year-old woman, Melinda Duckett, committed suicide following an interview conducted by Grace concerning the disappearance of Duckett's 2-year-old son.[16]

Grace interviewed Duckett less than two weeks after the child went missing, questioning her for her alleged lack of openness regarding her son's disappearance, asking Duckett "Where were you? Why aren't you telling us where you were that day?"[17] Duckett appeared confused and was unable to answer whether or not she had taken a polygraph test. When Grace asked her "why" she could not account for specific details, Duckett began to reply, "Because I was told not to," to which Grace responded, "Ms. Duckett, you are not telling us for a reason. What is the reason? You refuse to give even the simplest facts of where you were with your son before he went missing. It is day twelve." According to the CNN transcript, Duckett replied, "(INAUDIBLE) with all media. It's not just there, just all media. Period." Grace then moved on to a media psychologist who asserted that Duckett was "skirting around the issue."[16][17]

Posted by: dirty_hipster at September 4, 2009 1:45 PM

yeah- me too biff.

Posted by: bxgrl at September 4, 2009 1:46 PM

Nancy Grace is on CNN about, say, every 5 minutes. She's an attorney, turned book writer, turned 'talking head'. She's got a very dogged attitude, and she's sometimes right, but mostly just wants to SCREAM and get her point heard.

http://www.cnn.com/CNN/Programs/nancy.grace/

Posted by: cobblehiller at September 4, 2009 1:47 PM

She's on Headline News - does an hour-long program featuring the latest normal-seeming guy to brutally assault, rape, or kidnap someone.

"Does your blog admin have a dark side?? Find out tonight on Nancy Grace!"

Then she shouts down people and recycles the same footage for each segment. Granted, a lot of stories are obvious, it's more like a "let's all tell creeps they're creeps" - it gets really old.

She was all over the place during Scott Peterson, he was her White Whale.

Posted by: infinitejester at September 4, 2009 1:48 PM

wow- Grace sounds like a complete waste of organic material.

Posted by: Butterfly at September 4, 2009 1:54 PM

Hey Rob;

Let me give you some advice, as I'm older than you:

You can't argue with "true believers":

Posted by: benson at September 4, 2009 1:54 PM

Heard her real name is Polly Esther

Is Greta Van Sustren still around? She also horrifies me.

Posted by: dirty_hipster at September 4, 2009 1:55 PM

"Not innuendo, insults and garbage."

But Americans like that stuff!

Posted by: infinitejester at September 4, 2009 1:56 PM

You MUST watch this!! It's the cutest puppy EVER (and that's coming from the cat lady!):

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X0-Sv6YnxEc

Posted by: TownhouseLady at September 4, 2009 2:01 PM

Greta van Susteren is on Fox still, I think.
From the trailers, she spent about 3 solid years just covering the American girl that went missing on Aruba.

There's something really revolting about the 'true crime' shows, but I confess I find myself watching them very occasionally.

Posted by: etson at September 4, 2009 2:02 PM

" She also horrifies me."

Likewise, DH.

Posted by: cobblehiller at September 4, 2009 2:03 PM

As a bleeding heart, liberal, pinko commie card-carrying socialist, I have to say that, although I typically agree with Jon Stewart's message, at times I find him to be condescending and self-righteous.

Posted by: Biff Champion at September 4, 2009 2:07 PM

When Clinton was in office, tings in Iraq were quite different. In addition, he had reputable documentation of Husseins activities and good reason to believe there were WMD's there. Let's not forget Hussein also started the Gulf War- this was not the has-been of 2002. In addition, the documentation used by Bush was not only out of date and known to be wrong, some of it was flat out lies. The only yellowcake Hussein seemed to be getting was with chocolate frosting on it.

On top of that we were supposedly going after Bin Laden in Afghanistan and suddenly we veer of into Iraq. With no reason whatsoever. In fact, as early as January of 2002, Bush said he didn't care about Bin Laden.

"You can't argue with "true believers":"

Yes- and they also say, "there are none so blind as those who will not see."

Posted by: bxgrl at September 4, 2009 2:08 PM

Agreed, DH and cobble.

I agree with that too biff- sometimes the medium outweighs the message. Or people get to a point in their celebrity where it becomes all about them.

Posted by: bxgrl at September 4, 2009 2:10 PM

No comments to my post, eh? He-he-he!!

Well, allow me to print out part of President Clinton's December 16th, 1998 speech:

"Earlier today I ordered America's armed forces to strike military and security targets in Iraq. They are joined by British forces," Clinton said.

"Their mission is to attack Iraq's nuclear, chemical and biological weapons programs and its military capacity to threaten its neighbors," said Clinton.

I think it you check the Congressional Record, you will also find that President Clinton signed into a law that said that it is the policy of the United States to bring about regime change in Iraq.

Facts are funny thing....

Posted by: cobblehiller at September 4, 2009 2:15 PM

The first Bush dropped the ball & left Clinton holding it. The 2nd Bush really hurled the ball out of play by going after non-existent wmd instead of pursuing Bin Laden. We'd be done w/ all of this if he hadn't started that spurious war.

Posted by: Arkady at September 4, 2009 2:15 PM

Posted by: TownhouseLady at September 4, 2009 2:18 PM

Hmm, I wonder how vodka tastes in a Cranberry & Pomegranate Emergen-C? Is it too early to try that? ; )

Posted by: cobblehiller at September 4, 2009 2:19 PM

"Captain Morgan Rum + Ginger Ale tastes like a cream soda."

..and a scoop of vanilla ice cream perchance?!?

Posted by: TownhouseLady at September 4, 2009 2:19 PM

And what's your point? You are completely missing the difference between Clinton and Bush and the situation in Iraq. We didn't invade Iraq under Clinton.

And yes there was a policy statement regarding regime change but it took Bush 2 to invade in an utterly useless and unnecessary pre-emptive war we have no business conducting. Also remember Clinton was coming in after the Gulf war, so there was far more reason to be worried about Iraq and Hussein capabilities, although Bush 1 certainly decimated his army.

So maybe you should take it up with Cheney.

Posted by: bxgrl at September 4, 2009 2:20 PM

DH, surprise surprise. For this wkend, I'm finally get my lazy behind to Lowes / HD to pick out stuff for the crown heights place. The HD here next to Bloomingdales is stocked with more pricy stuff than the ones in NJ or BK that I've gone to before. I had some sticker shock strolling through the aisles. But have to say, this store had the most "talent" I've ever seen at a lowes or HD - a few model quality too. So my eyes were full fed b4

Thanks Etson!

The cats love the house here. The stairs and the bedrooms are carpeted and they love running up and down because they get more traction on the carpets

Hey guys, I need your help. I'm taking a very artsy German friend on a long walk through "hip" Brooklyn tonight. I am going to take her from my place in the North Slope, down to Fifth Ave, across the Gowanus Canal, and up through Carroll Gardens and out to Red Hook.

I'm planning to stop on the way for drinks at Brooklyn Social, and dinner at Petite Crevette.

But I would love to add a gallery, or a cool shop, or a neat building to the tour. I already tried to arrange to get into the dumpster pool on Bond, but it is closed for the season.

Does anybody know any "design-y" type places in the area that would be good to add to my tour?

Posted by: WonTon at September 4, 2009 3:53 PM

ugh dipster. you were one of those people who would put a leash on their cat and then attentionwhore themselves outside?

lol (i did the same thing when i had a bunny)

Very true dave...Hari is sliding around the kitchen floor right now like he's in the icecapades. Very funny for me...not so much for him. He's gonna wind up with brain damage if he slides head first into the dishwasher one more time!

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at September 4, 2009 3:54 PM

I've had a lot of cats over the years, and FH had the temperment and mannerisms of a big dog, in the cuddly package of a fat cat. after him, i don't think i'd want to get stuck with an aloof, independent animal.

Posted by: dirty_hipster at September 4, 2009 3:54 PM

I should add: this German friend is also one of my major clients. I'd like to get her to do a book with me about Brooklyn....so I really do appreciate your suggestions.

Posted by: WonTon at September 4, 2009 3:55 PM

Sorry, Wonton...that area isn't my expertise :(

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at September 4, 2009 3:55 PM

"ugh dipster. you were one of those people who would put a leash on their cat and then attentionwhore themselves outside?"

haha - yeah that was me! We used to do it at my parents home before i moved to the city so i had to take him out he would just go to the front door and cry.

Posted by: dirty_hipster at September 4, 2009 3:57 PM

wonton - i think there is some sort of gallery on van brunt in red hook. i haven't been but i was invited to something there once.

what time are you going on this walk? on union street between 4th and 3rd avenue, usually around 4-5 in the morning there are a couple of regular raggamuffin ladies of the night that you can heckle and make fun of

When Widget was about 6 months old he banged into something by sliding & gave himself a bloody nose & bloody gums. Scared the be-jeezus out of me - tore to the vet who said he was ok but owner needed some valium. He still zips around banging into things.
I used to walk them on leads but too many dogs around.

So I'm coming back from a meeting in midtown today and I'm in a baking hot cab with no a/c with one of the partners I work for, and the cabbie is a total moron, and we get stuck in a major traffic jam going south on the FDR in the low 30s. Big accident, and there are cop cars and ambulances behind us and the idiot cabbie isn't getting out of the way, and everyone is honking at us, and the guy I'm with just completely loses his shit on the cabbie. So we get out of the cab right there on the frigging FDR and walk back up the FDR to the closest exit to take another cab. One of the oddest experiences I have had recently.

Posted by: lechacal at September 4, 2009 4:21 PM

Rob, thanks for the tip, but since my friend comes from Berlin, introducing her to those ladies would be coals to Newcastle.

Dave, can I take a raincheck on the Thai phallus tour? I'll bring over some of my Siva lingams and they can all get acquainted.

Posted by: WonTon at September 4, 2009 4:22 PM

oh - and there is some artists in Crown Heights now too apparently - mostly due to Tavern on Nostrand I hear.

Posted by: dirty_hipster at September 4, 2009 4:22 PM

WonTon,
Mopar mentions galleries etc quite frequently & seems to be in the know wrt the art scene. Perhaps she'll check in & give you a couple of ideas. Or maybe one of the other PLUSA's has her details & could contact her and ask?

Posted by: etson at September 4, 2009 4:23 PM

Lechacal, you would've done same if it was just you in the cab

Posted by: more4less at September 4, 2009 4:23 PM

Exciting stuff, Snaps. Gardening, swimming, lolling. Niece & kids coming Monday.

Posted by: Arkady at September 4, 2009 4:24 PM

lmao lechacal - that sounds like a grand ol time!

you should have just stared at the cabbie - he would have produced some jameson to mellow out the partner.

Posted by: dirty_hipster at September 4, 2009 4:24 PM

DH, that's old news. now they're saying its due to franklin park the beer garden.

Posted by: more4less at September 4, 2009 4:25 PM

I wouldn't have lost my shit on the cabbie. What's the point? A temper tantrum is only worth it if it gets results. I have temper tantrums all the time, but only when it will get me what I want. Why scream at an idiot cabbie when you're going to be just as stuck in the same traffic no matter what you say? Sit back and chill the fuck out while you make your way through the traffic jam.

Posted by: lechacal at September 4, 2009 4:26 PM

Wonton,

pray Wasder checks in too - he seems to know that stuff too

Posted by: more4less at September 4, 2009 4:27 PM

Arkady...Yikes!

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at September 4, 2009 4:27 PM

Lechacal, so you prefer to stay in the cab? if so, maybe you should've told the partner "let's see who'll be back in the office first" - as he walks off on the FDR.

Posted by: more4less at September 4, 2009 4:30 PM

DH, you provocateur, you.

Well, everyone, I was running around Manhattan most of today, trying to get free lance stuff done before the world closes early, and I'm on the F downtown to Delancy St. I was reading my novel, and someone taps me on the shoulder, and it's Kens. He was on his way home after a half day. It never ceases to amaze me that you can run into people you know in this city of 8 million people. Great to see you, Kens!

Posted by: Montrose Morris at September 4, 2009 4:30 PM

DH- I have to keep a water spray bottle next to the desk to drive away the aloof independent animals who never leave me alone.

Posted by: bxgrl at September 4, 2009 4:30 PM

lechacal, my issue with most cabs in NYC is why can I always get air con that works perfectly in third world countries like Malaysia, Indonesia & Thailand not to mention HK, Singapore & Japan and NOT in NYC??????????

If the A/C doesn't work there's no tip. Most cabbies are morons.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at September 4, 2009 4:30 PM

Arkady, the amplified antenna worked so well for my neighbor that I got one myself and disconnected the cable.

Posted by: bxgrl at September 4, 2009 4:33 PM

speaking of cabbies, a buddy of mine told me he got into a cab where the guy had a headset on and he was taking technical support calls for some bank. wow, now that's a hard working dude

Posted by: more4less at September 4, 2009 4:34 PM

DIBS I can actually picture you losing your shit on a cabbie and getting out in the middle of the FDR.

Posted by: lechacal at September 4, 2009 4:34 PM

Wonton;

Another thing you may want to do is to stop by at the old American Can factory building on the corner of 3rd Street and 3rd Ave. This place is chock full of artists and there is usually something going on. Also, on the corner of Union Street and *I think* Nevins, there is a porcelain studio that is open to the public, and they've got some really fine things in there.

Posted by: benson at September 4, 2009 4:36 PM

thanks, benson. I forgot about the american can factory!

Posted by: WonTon at September 4, 2009 4:38 PM

A colleague of mine emigrated to NY from Honk Kong about 30 years ago. One of his first jobs was to drive a yellow cab. He likes to tell the story (and he is pretty funny when he does) about one of his first pick-ups. Two guys get in,and when he asks them "Where do you want to go?", they replied "Just drive around". One guy then proceeded to service the other in the back. My friend likes to say "There I was, a naive new immigrant and this was like my *welcome to NY* experience".

Posted by: benson at September 4, 2009 4:40 PM

DIBS, speaking of A/C, went to 2 buddies' house for bbq recently and they both got the split units (both fujitsu) - 1 in each room. they told me it was more than 50% cheaper than the 2 zone central air they got quoted and they believe their electric bills have been lower than what their research on electric bill was with central air. The only issue for you is those units will be visible on the wall vs. tiny air ducts via central air

Posted by: infinitejester at September 4, 2009 4:58 PM

bxgrl - Oh come on, it's politics, not some kind of right wing conspiracy. Are you saying the left is above that kind of thing? If Bush made some kind of a similar speech on one of his pet issues the lefties wouldn't be accusing him of indotrinating youth of whatever?

Posted by: lechacal at September 4, 2009 5:00 PM

I have to work on the CH House tour program (rob- are you coming this year?) so that's my staycation.

Ha! Think you missed it jester.
Think Arkady was an inadvertent round number poster yesterday as well.

Posted by: etson at September 4, 2009 5:02 PM

lechacal- Even I didn't claim Bush was reading a right wing fundamentalist tract disguised as a children's book on 9-11. He's not making a speech on his issues- he's just talking to the nation's children - like many other presidents before him. This whole thing is getting so out of hand- I have news for everyone. Obama is the President of the United States, Duly elected. I respect the office and in this case the man. I have never seen this country behave as though it no longer matters if someone is elected, only what his party is. I hated Bush- but he was still my President. When we no longer respect our electoral process we may as well give it up but that means we no longer believe in the Constitution or democracy.

Posted by: bxgrl at September 4, 2009 5:07 PM

Lechacal;

I'm shocked, SHOCKED that you would suggest that our friends on the left would criticize a president for his actions. Tsk-tsk. Such scary tactics only emanate from the knuckle-dragging right.

Busier than a one-armed paper hanger around here!

Posted by: infinitejester at September 4, 2009 5:11 PM

For some reason many neighbors think I'm a weird cat lady. So I'm sitting here now trying to sew a patch on a window screen. The boys tore a hole in it this a.m. when a squirrel ran across the sill. Try sewing black on black while leaning at a 90 degree angle w/ 2 cats trying to help & one is also trying to get out the window because the screen is raised. Kids in the adjacent back yard are pointing & giggling. Wonder why...

Posted by: Arkady at September 4, 2009 5:12 PM

Lechacal;

Yup. I think you're on to something. I'd buy a few of your bumper stickers and put them on my car,and drive around Park Slope.

Posted by: benson at September 4, 2009 5:14 PM

Well whatever it is, hope it goes great.

benson- this is not about criticizing because yes, the left did criticize. This is about acting as though the President of the United States has no standing and using any lie to foster that. Now they're saying he will use this speech to indoctrinate the young. To push his political agenda- although how anyone would expect to use 10 year olds to push an agenda is beyond ridiculous.

This is about the extreme right making up the most outrageous conspiracy theories and ridiculous charges because they are sore losers. If you can't see the problem with extremists, that's too bad because quite a few of your fellow Republicans are concerned and talking about it. FYI- Bill O'Reilly thought Obama should make a speech to the nations' schoolchildren because his life story is a classic American Tale.

After all the ranting and raving about patriotism the least 8 years, what's patriotic about teaching children the POTUS is not important and that America isn't about democracy but about keeping your party in power?

Posted by: bxgrl at September 4, 2009 5:17 PM

benson- e-wife? Excuse me, but I was not the one who went on the cruise with you. E-wives are supposed to get benefits.

Posted by: bxgrl at September 4, 2009 5:30 PM

Needless to say, Benson, I strongly disagree that Lechacal's take on it is correct. There *were* conspiracies on the part of the Bush White House - they did lie, they did commit unconstitutional acts, they did waste tons of tax payer money on unaudited purchase deals of old cronies. That's not sour grapes, that's fact.

Posted by: Arkady at September 4, 2009 5:30 PM

I can't believe I missed this discussion for a nap with a heat pad under my back...SHE'S JUST KOOKY.

Michelle Bachman is A FRUIT LOOP. She's got a few screws loose. She's not playing with a full deck. She's 6 eggs short of a dozen. A few spoons short of a full set.

Posted by: cobblehiller at September 4, 2009 5:34 PM

bxgrl - These are the nylon but I did the same thing w/ a metal one. HD or Lowe's sells screening in rolls & they let me buy about 6 inches (by 42?) & I just cut bits off as I need them. In some ways the metal is easier because you can bend the very edge to fit in the matching holes in the screen - w/ the nylon, I have to sort of baste it first.

Posted by: cobblehiller at September 4, 2009 5:35 PM

lechacal- very true. But in the long run what is the result going to be with nuclear arms? That we used them simply to intimidate? Is it symbolic? And what's the reality if we ever use them? Its a no win situation all around.

I know there are terrorists and crazy countries who have no qualms about using nuclear weapons. So what do we do- bomb them back to the stone age while we poison ourselves and kill millions? I mean- what's the answer?

Posted by: bxgrl at September 4, 2009 5:36 PM

Arkady - It's comforting to know that Democrats don't waste taxpayer money on cronyism or lie or engage in conspiracies. I guess I should vote Democrat from now on so that those things will stop happening.

Not sure.

"And what's the reality if we ever use them? Its a no win situation all around."

It would be a huge debbie downer, that's for sure.

CH and Bxgrl;

I have a question for you: is there any Republican woman who is not a "kook", an "airhead" or a "bimbo", rather than someone who has a different approach than you?

I agree with virtually nothing that Hillary Clinton and Dianne Feinstein have to propose, yet I see them for what they are: bright women who serve their country.

Posted by: bxgrl at September 4, 2009 5:40 PM

Posted by: cobblehiller at September 4, 2009 5:42 PM

"I agree with virtually nothing that Hillary Clinton and Dianne Feinstein have to propose, yet I see them for what they are: bright women who serve their country."

That's why I rarely engage in political arguements. There is such a tendency nowadays to villify "the other side" Does anyone really think that anyone in politics actually wants to hurt anyone individually or the country as a whole? They are just doing what they think is right, and best. Doesn't always work out the way they intended though.

Posted by: dirty_hipster at September 4, 2009 5:43 PM

I understand that lechacal. I just wonder if the powers that be ever think further ahead than dinner next week. The Soviets perfected a nuclear weapon (I forget what it was actually called) that killed people but left the buildings standing and I'm thinking to myself- could there be a more useless weapon? Like- who's going to use the bathroom in one of those buildings, let alone be left alive to use them?

Posted by: bxgrl at September 4, 2009 5:44 PM

Oh, and my mother. She was a republican late in life after being an Independent for many years.

Posted by: cobblehiller at September 4, 2009 5:45 PM

It's called a neutron bomb. It's actually quite destructive, but much more energy goes into a neutron burst than into blast. But it messes up structures pretty good. It's funny, I was actually reading up last night on the history and design of nuclear weapons.

And the powers that be definitely think ahead. There are a lot of serious, intelligent people who have put real thought into our nuclear strategy over the years.

benson- let me be clear. There are many Republican women I do not find to be kooks. And many Republican men. The ones who raise my ire are the ones who , as DH put it, vilify. Those cut from the same cloth as Ann Coulter (and believe me, I don't even put Palin in that league).

Olympia Snow I do like. But the likes of Michelle Malkin, Coulter, Laura Ingraham,Bachmann? They are the most visible face of the women of the Right and I don't believe they are a fair representation of it.

I understand with what DH is saying and mostly agree- but I have to qualify that with the fact some people believe G-d is on their side and that gives them license to do whatever they want. That's their justification- and its been used a thousand times in history. Not to invoke Godwin, but Hitler thought he was doing good for Germany too.

"And the powers that be definitely think ahead. There are a lot of serious, intelligent people who have put real thought into our nuclear strategy over the years."

I hope and pray you're right.I'm sure you're right but as we've seen, it isn't always the most intelligent or serious people who make the final decisions.

I actually find the history of nuclear weapons fascinating (and terrible at the same time). One of my cousins used to work for Albert Einstein and my mother had a photo of the atomic test on Bikini Atoll taken by him. I know he died of cancer- I wonder if it was from watching the tests?

I feel similarly, the most visible female voices for the Republicans seem to be from the FAR FAR right. I can't relate to them at all. They are generally vindictive, insulting, shallow and manipulative. They lack substance and the ability to think deeply.

I just can't take Coulter, Ingraham and Bachman seriously. They aren't serious people. They are 'personas'. I think of them like info-mercials. They're quasi-entertainment for the right. They're cartoon-ish. And very little if anything of real substance comes from any interaction with them. That said, Ingraham does have great legs. ; )

The more moderate Republicans that I have listed seem to be able to communicate ideas without villifying the left, and seem to me to be thinking people. And some of them are with merit. And while it would take a lot for me to vote for a Rep, I have done it once. Not that I'm proud of it, but it was the best choice at that time.

Right! Yes, I was toying with the idea of inviting some 'stoner ladies over here for a little brunch. I'll email you, give me a couple dates to work with. The 12th is out, we have to go to NJ for a friend's 50th! [E-gads!]
