New Toy Store on Atlantic

A new kids store opened a couple of weeks ago at 152 Atlantic Avenue in Cobble Hill. In addition to toys and books, the new spot, called Mini Max Toys and Cuts, also offers hair cuts, performances, arts and crafts, as BHB points out. It was started by four local mothers in the space formerly occupied by Pomegranate Looms and Cook's Companion. Anyone check it out yet? GMAP

enough of these kids shops have shut down in parkslope, but hopefully this does better given the variety of services. and hopefully they dont have $100 baby sweaters like the others.

And I hope they have fun stuff, not just educational p.c. developmental toys.

What ever happened to slinky toys? Pick-up sticks? Uno? Silly putty? Those new-fangled toys can be quite lame.

It looks like it's modeled after Lulu's on 5th, which is just fine - this place is closer. I'd just like to see more of a variety of toys....do we really need another outlet for Melissa and Doug toys at full price?
Posted by: CHMomma at September 18, 2009 10:53 AM
Ah yes, Lulu's. I couldn't recall the name. Is Lulu's still open?
Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at September 18, 2009 10:57 AM
yep. educational toys are ZZZZZZZZZZZZZ. sorry but if you buy your kids crappy toys they wind up growing up to hate you.

I recommend Jarts, Sit n' Spin and Kerbangers (check on Ebay).
Now they were fun!

Sit n Spin ruled...until I hurled! A child with motion sickness...I had very little fun!
Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at September 18, 2009 11:14 AM
omg the sit n spin thingie was something i ALWAYS wanted as a kid hahahah. for some reason i never got it. grrr. i totally miss the days of being able to eat and chew on your toxic toys without grown-ups having a fit about it. it must suck to be a kid today. no fun

I really need a toy cell phone and/or TV remote to amuse my kid as he is obsessing over them.
Been to 3 toy stores and can't find one. I'd give him a real one, but I'm pretty sure he'd eat it.
Lulu's is still open.

Northsloperenter...check the dollar bin at Target. They have that kind of stuff in there all the time. Also go to the dollar stores on 5th ave in the south slope...full of that kind of stuff.
Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at September 18, 2009 11:19 AM
yep. dollar stores have toy cell phones. they even come with candy in them :) ive been suckered into buying a few myself hahahah. just dont be one of those annoyingly over concerned parents that frit and fret over every toy and the possibility of toxicity blah blah blah. believe me, if you do that, in 18 years your kid will hate you.

Remember that SNL skit of new toys to give your kids for x-mas I think...Bag-o glass!

I had a nice wood burning set as a kid. I made a lovely name plate for my bedroom door and an even more attractive blister on my pointer finer.
Good times.

We took our two-year-old there last week for a haircut and the staff was great--very patient and friendly. $26 might seem high for a toddler's haircut but when you consider the squirming, crying and sometimes screaming that goes along with said cut, they earn every penny.

haircuts?

I went looking for a good chemistry set a while back, couldn't find one. Chemistry rules.

Rob, $26 is appropriate for a child's haircut. As bookchic pointed out, children squirm, scream and cry while getting their hair cut. That's something you have to pay for and $26 is a small price to pay to have someone patient/skilled enough to deal with that.

From the book "What to Expect: The Toddler Years":
"If you think about it, being afraid of the barber is perfectly understandable. A stranger, aiming right for your child's head with a pair of scissors (an implement you've probably warned is dangerous): what's not to fear?"
Posted by: infinitejester at September 18, 2009 12:52 PM
Yeah it's:
$10 for hair cut
$8 for keeping kid calm and not cutting his ear off while he flails about
$8 for doing all this with a smile while mom and dad are less than 5 feet away hovering about
A bargain if ever there were one.

I took my son in for a haircut a couple weeks ago. It was a great experience - very nice people and a great set-up. Not chaotic like Lulu's. They give you 10% off any purchases w/ a cut...got my son a ball and a couple puzzles and we all left happy.

Northsloperenter, The best kid cell phone is made by Parents and is sold at Target. YEARS of amusement. They are not fooled by cheap versions and will prefer the real one to them.

Looks I better stop off at Target on the way home. Thanks for the tip.
Posted by: northsloperenter at September 18, 2009 2:15 PM
wait, Cook's Companion is gone???
Posted by: badifat at September 18, 2009 2:28 PM
Cook's Companion moved a block away awhile ago, same block and side of the street as sahadi's

Nice -- just got one. I like that you can record your own message on it for the kid.
I'm going to have to cue up Empire Strikes Back and get Darth Vader saying "I AM YOUR FATHER!" as the playback message.

It was $0.75 for a haircut when I was a kid, and a quarter tip. You stayed still or got slapped. Are you guys kidding? Put a bowl over their heads.
