New Gowanus Club is Getting There

ultraviolet%20092009.jpg
Ultraviolet, the club on 7th Street and 3rd Avenue that's been in the works for about a year and a half, is nearing completion. The large lounge, which will have bars and DJ booths on three separate floors, has an impressive pedigree—one of the owners of the East Village's popular but now defunct Save the Robots is behind the venture—and it's on the same block as the Bell House. The space looks almost finished (no interior picture-taking is allowed, unfortunately, but it's pretty slick). The owners are waiting on a final city inspection and their liquor license, so it'll probably open within the next 3 to 6 months. GMAP

3rd Ave is bumpin!

Posted by: crimsonson at September 18, 2009 10:46 AM

Save the Robots was always a guaranteed good time. It would be difficult to replicate that vibe but I wish the owners luck. Sounds like a nice addition to Brooklyn nightlife.

Posted by: ilikeslices at September 18, 2009 11:05 AM

Save the Robots. That takes me back.

Posted by: CarrollGardened at September 18, 2009 11:11 AM

CGar, you get around!

Thi and one other Gowanus place are on my list to check out.

Posted by: infinitejester at September 18, 2009 11:14 AM

Now brownstoner is aging me, ugh. c-gar, what was the diner on 2nd and 6th? lots of runway shows on sunday mornings?

Posted by: DeLepp at September 18, 2009 11:27 AM

I try jester!

"Now brownstoner is aging me"

ROFL, DeLepp! I can't remember the diner.

Posted by: CarrollGardened at September 18, 2009 11:32 AM

Has anyone else noticed how lush Gowanus suddenly looks in the Google map? They're really doing some clean-up!

Posted by: CarrollGardened at September 18, 2009 11:35 AM

CGar, ha! Brooklyn, Iowa. Let's start planning the next gathering.

Posted by: jessibaby at September 18, 2009 11:49 AM

Gowanus, IOWA!

Posted by: BH76 at September 18, 2009 11:50 AM

I prefer Brooklyn, Ohio

Or maybe Brooklyn, MN.
Just north of Hibbing, the birth place of Bob Dylan!

I loved saved the robots! I lived a block away a long time ago.
But what was great about it was that it was after hours (illegal).
I hope Ultraviolet works.
Break a leg.

Posted by: gs3 at September 18, 2009 12:26 PM

Are you talking about Florent?! I loved that place. Save the Robots … geez … only time I even danced in a repurposed meat locker (as far as I remember). Very happy 3rd Ave is blossoming with places like this.

Posted by: Mr Joist at September 18, 2009 12:33 PM

Florent?
wrong hood.
25 yrs too late

Posted by: gs3 at September 18, 2009 12:38 PM

Florent was in the Meatpacking District, c.1990 until recently.

gs3, I used to love going to (illegal) after hours clubs. The other one I remember well was East of Eden - it was near Varick Street, not too far from Area.

Posted by: CarrollGardened at September 18, 2009 12:57 PM

c-gar, now you've done it by my mentioning area. My bones and joints are a aching!

Posted by: DeLepp at September 18, 2009 12:59 PM

DeLepp, as I recall Area always had a theme, which would change weekly? Monthly? Last night, and last Thursday, and the Thursday before that, are beginning to remind me of my long nights out at Area, followed by a long "morning" out at East of Eden (where they would frisk you on your way in) or another after hours club. As I just told wasder on the OT, as I approach 45, I think I'm having a bit of a mid-life crisis and reliving 1984!

Posted by: CarrollGardened at September 18, 2009 1:04 PM

Doh! I was thinking of The Cooler – is that place still around? Save the Robots was on Ave B, right?

Posted by: Mr Joist at September 18, 2009 1:09 PM

Mr. Joist, yes, I believe so as to Save the Robots - definitely Alphabet City. Don't recall The Cooler though.

Posted by: CarrollGardened at September 18, 2009 1:11 PM

c-gar, if I recall correctly area was wednesday nights. I think they changed by-monthly. Loved the pool. It was the first place where someone offered me coke. When r u approaching 45, I do it n Jan.
1984-1985 were great times to go club hopping, nobody cared what you were into, segregation and club kids came along after that and it got boring. Favs were BoyBar, Madame Rosa's, Forty Worth and Palladium. Only got to Save the Robots a couple of times as I always worked on Sundays.

Posted by: DeLepp at September 18, 2009 1:15 PM

joist, cooler was the 90s, they had a lot of acid jazz concerts.

Posted by: DeLepp at September 18, 2009 1:19 PM

Ditto everything you just said, DeLepp. Boybar and Palladium, yes, the other 2 I don't recall. Cat Club and Tunnel and Limelight and something with the word "Eyes" (4 words, begins with . . . ).

45 on October 10, which is why I want the Libra-Scorpio Gathering to be a blowout!

Posted by: CarrollGardened at September 18, 2009 1:22 PM

I can only think of private eyes....will definately need to do at least a sausage fest at keens.

Posted by: DeLepp at September 18, 2009 1:25 PM

DeLepp, you're good!! Private Eyes it was!! OK, so I was wrong about 4 words.

What's keens, but yeah, you know I'm up for it.

Posted by: CarrollGardened at September 18, 2009 1:35 PM

keens is a great steakhouse on 36 and their specialty is mutton chop. Been there since the 1890s

Posted by: DeLepp at September 18, 2009 1:37 PM

What a great thread.

Posted by: Lowhearts at September 18, 2009 1:38 PM

I practically lived in Save the Robots. Granted it was always a little disconcerting to walk out into daylight and see people beginning their day.

Posted by: gowanusdog at September 18, 2009 3:16 PM

And then there was The World a couple blocks away.

Posted by: gs3 at September 18, 2009 3:22 PM

I remember The World, too. And, gowanusdog, I remember that feeling well. Worse, I stayed with a friend, and we'd get back to his parents' apartment on the UES in the morning, and his father would invariably be getting ready to go running in Central Park as we were strolling in, and of course ask us if we wanted to run with him.

Posted by: CarrollGardened at September 18, 2009 4:30 PM

In the 60s the Dom was good.

Posted by: Arkady at September 18, 2009 4:31 PM

CarrollGardened,
When you came out of Robots did you have lots of dirt under your fingernails? I could never quite figure that out. It would get in one's too. Besides the glaring sunlight there were also plenty of times when I would look at my watch and wonder wth I was doing in a sandfilled basement dancing at 6:30 AM especially since I could have sworn it had been only 1:00 AM five minutes before.

And there was always Kiev for early (very) morning pierogis to help sop up the alcohol.

Posted by: gowanusdog at September 18, 2009 5:03 PM

gdog, back in the day time moved like sound. I often thought that I had taken a nap somewhere. Couldn't believe that much time had passed.

Posted by: DeLepp at September 18, 2009 5:10 PM

So jealous of you guys - sounds like a lot of fun back in the day.

Posted by: dirty_hipster at September 18, 2009 5:11 PM

"dancing at 6:30 AM especially since I could have sworn it had been only 1:00 AM five minutes before"

I don't remember dirt under the nails, but I do remember entire nights passing in only a matter if minutes. I love Kiev - isn't it still there?

Posted by: CarrollGardened at September 18, 2009 5:13 PM

DH, those were my "Bright Lights, Big City" days . . . following my acting stint at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts (I swear to God).

Posted by: CarrollGardened at September 18, 2009 5:21 PM

dh, it was fun and "democratic", all you needed was a fun risky attitude and a little originality and a little cash (sometimes just flirtation got you into a club). None of this bottle bar($200 yikes).

Posted by: DeLepp at September 18, 2009 5:22 PM

Speaking of clubs, hard as it may be to believe now, Hard Rock Cafe was one of the "go to" spots c.1984. The lines used to stretch around the block and around again. There were red velvet ropes in front. A friend finally got me a Hard Rock Gold Card - you couldn't charge anything with it, but you flashed it at the door and they let you right in without having to wait in line.

Posted by: CarrollGardened at September 18, 2009 5:26 PM

DH,
You haven't really lived until you've been to the Pyramid and had Danny the Pony Boy ask if you wanted a ride.

CarrollGardened,
I am sure Kiev is still there but those days are long over me.
