Jay-Z Slept Here

560-State-0909.jpgNew York Magazine reports (and Curbed picks up) that the new single off Jay-Z's current album references his former "Stash Box" at 560 State Street." I used to cop in Harlem, all of my Dominicanos. Right there up on Broadway, pull me back to that McDonald's. Took it to my stash box, 560 State Street. Catch me in the kitchen like a Simmons with them pastries." The magazine goes on to say that 560 State would be an ideal location for a stash box, given its proximity to the intersection of Flatbush, Atlantic and Fourth Avenue. It sounds like Jay may be exaggerating the extent of his activities at his former address, however. One neighbor remembers him as a cordial and respectful neighbor. GMAP

If I was moving weight - I'd want the neighbors of my 'stash-box' to not think I'm a dick. They might go on the Brownstoner forum and complain.

Good Lord, that Mr. Z is a consummate lyricist, is he not?

Posted by: Brenda from Flatbush at September 17, 2009 11:28 AM

If you really think about it - its kinda sad

Posted by: fsrg at September 17, 2009 11:29 AM

I wish the What were here to comment on this.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at September 17, 2009 11:32 AM

stop sippin that haterade. Jay-Z is probably the most recognizable Brooklynite worldwide.

He also made the Yankees cap more famous than a Yankees game apparently.

Where is the What?

man those lyrics are genius. and the 'simmons' and 'pastries' link.....no wonder the kids around my area sound like CEO's in training when they speak.

Why is it Sad that Jay Z is a famous Brooklynite?

Posted by: gemini10 at September 17, 2009 12:55 PM

"Why is it Sad that Jay Z is a famous Brooklynite?"

good question.

Posted by: dirty_hipster at September 17, 2009 1:02 PM

> Why is it Sad that Jay Z is a famous Brooklynite?

Because his music blows.

Posted by: DitmasSnark at September 17, 2009 1:24 PM

wait a sec...I have no clue what Jay-Z looks like or exactly why he is famous.
Barbara Streisand on other hand is far far more famous.

This is the What's new blog:

http://asshathill.blogspot.com/

It's been posted multiple times on this website, but keeps getting removed. I have no idea why.

I'm also highly doubtful that the site is run my the real What. He seems to like a lot of fruity white boy bands from the 80's, which seems highly unlike the real What.

Also, his grammar has improved to the point that he no longer sounds retarded.

Or maybe he just stopped smoking crack. Who knows?

Posted by: IronBalls at September 17, 2009 1:37 PM

It's never been removed

Babs is certainly famous but so is Jay Z..
sorry but some 14 year old has no idea who Babs is anyway...
ahh - this is what happens I guess when you grow old and lose touch...

Posted by: gemini10 at September 17, 2009 1:43 PM

The people who know Babs and not Jay are the ones on their way out. So even if she is currently more famous, that won't last for long. ;)

Posted by: row at September 17, 2009 1:48 PM

Ok...I'll be the loser square to ask the question...WTF is a stash box?

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at September 17, 2009 1:49 PM

Wow - Babs vs Jay-Z

Funny

Posted by: dirty_hipster at September 17, 2009 1:52 PM

I thought Barbara Stanwyck was the most famous Brooklynite!

Posted by: GHB at September 17, 2009 2:22 PM

Jay Z is a musical genius and a genius businessman. Is he more famous than Barbra Streisand? I'm...uh...I...I think... Pass?

Posted by: GoGoMrPoPo at September 17, 2009 2:23 PM

Eddie Murphy is pretty globally known, more than Jay-Z? maybe just cause he's been around longer. Myke Tyson, another Bklynite who's somewhat worldly

"Jay Z is a musical genius..."

I think to qualify as musical genius you have to be able to play an instrument. And I'm not sure that bragging about your days as a drug dealer counts as poetry, even if it does rhyme. Seems to me he's more famous for being Beyonce's other half, no?

"I think to qualify as musical genius you have to be able to play an instrument. And I'm not sure that bragging about your days as a drug dealer counts as poetry, even if it does rhyme"

Wrong on all counts. So you're essentially saying hip-hop isn't a legitimate form of music because rappers don't play their own instruments? Even if you don't like the music - Jay-Z has made 100s of millions of dollars first and foremost through his music, so it seems enough people disagree with you. I don't even like him that much but all this hate is dumb.

" Seems to me he's more famous for being Beyonce's other half, no?"

Absolutely not - more like the other way around.

Posted by: dirty_hipster at September 17, 2009 5:09 PM

oh - Nickelback and the Jonas Brothers play their own instruments - does that make them more of a musical genius than Jay-Z??

Posted by: dirty_hipster at September 17, 2009 5:10 PM

No, I'm pretty sure he was famous before we even knew about Beyonce. I play an instrument - pretty well, actually - and I still think Jay Z is a musical genius. Some people have music in them and some don't. Seems to me Jay Z's got it, but that's just one man's opinion, I suppose. He may use the modern tools of digital music to craft his song, but I'm not going to hold technology against him.

But mostly he's a business genius.

Posted by: GoGoMrPoPo at September 17, 2009 5:13 PM

Jay-z helped put Brooklyn back on the map in a good way...it doesnt matter that he is a rapper.
Also, anyone that has ever met him will attest to the fact that he is quite a gentleman and not a thug like folks make him out to be.
Yes, he is a rapper, Yes he is from the projects but he did what he could to get out of there and look at him now.
Probably one of the brightest people out there.

Posted by: KBklyn50 at September 17, 2009 5:45 PM

I'm with DH on this one -- Jay is genius. Allus has been, allus will.

Posted by: talknerdytome at September 17, 2009 6:29 PM

KBkyln im a let you finish but B.I.G put Bklyn back on the map. JZ is riding the wave.

Posted by: jack slade at September 17, 2009 6:42 PM

Amazing that so many care about the What. I don't know what's more pathetic - people who spend hours each day monitoring and commenting on a real estate website, or people like him who desperately want to be down with this crowd.

For the record: the What ain't hood. And as a general rule, anyone employing the term "asshat" ain't hood. But that's not the only reason for my assessment.

And it's simply astounding that, in this day & age, there are people who still think that rap is not music. And y'all are from Brooklyn? Good God. As a longtime hip hop fanatic, i say Jay-Z is an OK rapper. Certainly no "genius," but good, talented, and smart. And not a thug, unless one considers all former drug dealers to be per se thugs.
