It's Raining Cars at 1BBP

The folks over at Curbed bring us news that One Brooklyn Bridge Park, the warehouse-turned-luxury-condos (and now rentals), is handing out cars with units priced over $2 million, along with a parking spot to berth it. And this isn't the first luxury development to launch such a campaign, apparently: Windows on 123 in Harlem and 727 Prospect Place in Prospect Heights have both offered internal combustion engines to lure buyers. Curbed points out that the Audi A4 lists in the low $30,000s, which might be beneath any buyers who are capable of dropping $2 million on a condominium, but let those marketers try. GMAP

Sorry but Audi A4's roll around on the VW Jetta chassis. Nuff Said.

i'll be the first to say it: 727 Prospect Place is in Crown Heights proper, not even close to the disputed PH/CH border.
whatever.
i think it's good marketing.

say it with me...."CUT THE PRICES"
Posted by: joe_the_bummer at September 9, 2009 10:44 AM
has such gimmicks worked in moving pricey units as such at other developments?
Posted by: more4less at September 9, 2009 10:46 AM
BOD beat me to it - Audis are nothing more than dressed up VWs aka mechanical nightmares.
Posted by: dirty_hipster at September 9, 2009 10:50 AM
I guess that last round of price cuts did not work at all? How low do they have to go?
Posted by: bitter_bubble_buyer at September 9, 2009 10:52 AM
DH, so you pushing for some Lexus LS?
Posted by: more4less at September 9, 2009 10:52 AM
for sure m4l - i'd buy japanese before german anyday.

the units facing the water are special - how special (pricey) is up for debate. The ones facing BQE is the exact opposite (no view, lousy air quality, long trek to subways,...). Think they need to price the units as such - try to hold on units facing the water and fire sale the ones facing bqe. the monthly mainenance is big nut too.

Is this the complex that was supposed to earn money to maintain the park?
Posted by: bxgrl at September 9, 2009 11:05 AM
ha ha bxgirl yes i think it was. not THE park (that they're building now), but A park -- don't know what the status was but pretty sure that plan was scrapped.
Posted by: joe_the_bummer at September 9, 2009 11:15 AM
thanks, joe. (loved your comment on the sublet thread, btw.)
Posted by: bxgrl at September 9, 2009 11:20 AM
it looks like units are renting there, but not selling at all. The common charges are ridiculous
Posted by: muttdogz at September 9, 2009 11:21 AM
What's wrong with VWs? I like them a lot.
I like Audis even more - just not sure if they're worth the premium over the equivalent VW.
Anyways, Mr Scheff has it right - wrong car for a $2m pad. There have been similar schemes in the UK, mostly by private sellers, that have offered porsches and ferraris to go with the house.

I guess it sort of makes sense, because the only reason to live in such an out-of-the-way location is if you drive everywhere. Sad, though.

re: "pretty sure that plan was scrapped"
One Brooklyn Bridge Park is already making payments in lieu of taxes (PILOTs) to the Brooklyn Bridge Park Development Corporation. Senior staff at the development corporation report that the funds paid to date and in the future are sufficient to pay for park maintenance and operation until 2013. By that time, additional development (as approved in the general project plan) will need to come on line to generate greater revenue.

What person in their right mind with the money to afford an apartment at 1BBP would choose to live with a view right onto the BQE? Maybe they should have made the water side condos and the BQE side offices. Or a prison.

VW's/Audi's are notorious for electrical problems.
I have owned 4 VW's and 2 Audi's throughout the years, so I should know. The only redeeming quality of the Audi brand is their Quattro legacy.

photo looks like an S4, not an A4, whole different ball a wax.
Had an A6 2.7T for five years w nary a problem, Audis rock!

you people are missing the targeted demographic! this is not for rich people, but the working class children of rich people. i.e. teachers and their unemployed artsy fartsy sisters. the car is only worth 30K, so it's a working class vehicle for the NYC working class! why would a NYC school teacher be riding around in a ferrari? this condo/car combo deal is perfect for their budget. and all the haters are just jealous. duuuuh

too small for the family. Make it a Q7 and I'll reconsider.
Audi's are fine, especially if you're 6ft or over. Anyway, whats a Lexus if not a Toyota?
Posted by: dittoburg at September 9, 2009 1:09 PM
DBurg, look at the A6 Avant wayyyyy before the Q7.

They say the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different outcome.
Can't say I agree with you though - never had any electrical problems with either.

Buy a depreciating asset get another for free. Which one will depreciate faster is yet to be seen. I vote that the car will hold its value longer than the apartment.

Saw a 3br 3.5 bath w 1740 sq ft 7th fl sw corner yesterday. Unit below w same layout went for 1.3ish last week - supposedly. Lots of wasted space, small master bed, windows on harbor start at 4ft from ground and are not majestic views. Lots of bs ammenities. Lame. Zoned for another building just south to block those views.
