House of the Day: 333 Winthrop Street

333-winthrop-street-0909.jpg
Though a little off the beaten track from most of the houses we tend to profile, 333 Winthrop Street grabbed our attention because it had a low price tag (of $419,000) and appeared to have some nice old bones. When we started digging a little deeper, however, we discovered the real bummer about the two-family house: The block it's on is dominated by a stretch of unattractive newish townhouses that look like they were built as affordable housing a couple of decades ago. So while we still think the house itself has promise, the whole deal's looking a lot less interesting to us now.

Off the beaten track indeed. This is nearly five whole blocks from the Midwood Street HOTD posted last week.

Not sure I'd say the block is dominated by those ten or so less attractive houses to the west of this house; there are maybe 15 or 16 old row houses to the east of it. What the block's really dominated by is that gigantic parking lot on the other side of the street.

Not the prettiest block, but price may still be reasonable for what does look like good bones. At least from what's shown. Wonder about those apts, tho. Six rooms/three bedrooms each? Must be awfully cramped.
