Invasion of the Invisible Dogs

Anyone out and about in Downtown Brooklyn (or neighboring areas like Boerum Hill and Cobble Hill) yesterday afternoon would have been forgiven for thinking they were losing their marbles. Legions of mostly young people blanketed the streets walking invisible dogs. They were everyone. So what was up? Turns out it was the work of Improv Everywhere, a group that "causes scenes of chaos and joy in public places" and is tied to the impending opening of a new gallery installation at 51 Bergen Street. Well done!

not really hipsters. mostly losers.
Posted by: CG_ups at September 28, 2009 11:21 AM
A lot of them actually look like cats, not dogs.

Exactly what I was going to say, Rob.

Was taking a smoke break w/a friend at my local yesterday afternoon, two guys walked by with these. they said they were just walking around when questioned. The group next to us called them "retarded."

lighten up people. They had a good time and was probably cute. Smile once in awhile. Just hope they cleaned up after their pets.

Yawn.

Sounds like everyone has a case of the Mondays.
Grrr look at those young whippersnappers with invisible dogs!!
Posted by: dirty_hipster at September 28, 2009 11:40 AM
some of the stuff this group does is pretty funny. but these people were being ANNOYING. one woman with the invisible dog was screaming at this poor dude for kicking her dog.

It was stupid. It's one thing to have people converge somewhere for a single event. But in this case, what happens? You see a couple of them and think "are those lame invisible dog things back?" Then you see a whole bunch more and think, "I guess it's a lame stunt." Then curiosity gets the best of you, and you ask one of them "which lame stunt group are you with?" and of course they feel compelled to stay "in character", at which point you think "what a bunch of dumb douchebags." At least, that's what happened to me.

These "legions of mostly young people" seem to have an awful lot of time on their hands, most of which they apparently spend trying to attract attention to themselves. It's the invasion of the annoying overindulged children come to flower.
Posted by: orestes at September 28, 2009 11:53 AM
lol...I didn't think folks still had those stupid things.
Posted by: A CrownHeightsLady at September 28, 2009 11:54 AM
I saw these all over the neighborhood yesterday and just thought it was a cute stunt. No harm, no foul. Lighten up folks.

i WAS all ready to hate, but then you have to remember this is what makes nyc fun and interesting. i mean yeah, it might seem lame, but it's not a bad thing. performance art is kind of fun. in my performance art class in college we filled a parking garage with balloons. honestly i am not sure the point was, but it was fun, and a good memory made.

This is what happens when you don't get enough attention from your parents during childhood.

Legions of mostly cranky old farts blanketed the thread...

You should NEVER walk an invisible dog over a manhole like the girl in the picture is doing...you pet will wind up a victim of Con Ed.

Did they get government funding for this project?

Well, we can ask their imaginary parents about that when we next see these folks pushing around empty wheelchairs.
Anyway, it all seems like good clean fun, although I wouldn't exactly say it caused "scenes of chaos". Were they expecting people to scream and head for zee hills, War of the Worlds style?

Can we sue, using invisible lawyers for the invisible pit bull that bit the invisible child? Sounds like this was a hoot and funny too. If you really need to get angry at something Westboro Baptist is still around. they deserve it.

God, what a bunch of cranky haters on this board. Can't you all take a break from scowling and being bitter?
Posted by: Park_loper at September 28, 2009 2:23 PM
Nope, we can't take a break but thanks for asking.

One of the more asinine things I've seen in the past year or so...

Back in the day at least one of these sheep would've been beaten with the visible portion for being a jack ass.
