Development Watch: 4th Avenue Best Western

Despite a partial Stop Work Order that's been in place since December, the Best Western at the corner of 26th Street and 4th Avenue in Greenwood Heights has risen to six out of an ultimate ten stories. According to the management company's website, the hotel's slated to open next Spring, a prediction that seems a little optimistic to us.

There is a certain banal ugliness to New York architecture that has no equal in the World. Nothing like this could be built in Chicago, London or even China. Maybe next to an interstate in Nebraska, but never in a dense urban setting.
An architectural approval process is more critical to the health of our urban environment than zoning.

4th ave is the new bowery

Low end hotels are built with cardboard and glue. I bet they can get a bunch of third-graders to finish this project for mother's day.

Perhaps we should simply require that all renderings must reflect the actual site -- and not some Nebraska cornfiled.

What an awesome place to stay.

Hey, just what NY needs to make it an even more expensive place to live!

banal ugliness of 4/26th?
are you from out of town grand pa?
i don't recall the precise layout of that stretch of 4th ave, but if it is anything like the rest (further north) then that building will be an actual improvement.
and i generally like best westerns compared to alternatives.

Methinks Grand Pa has ever been to that corner. Nor Chicago, London or even China.

I've been to China.
It makes 4th Avenue look like the 4th Arrondissement.

Another example of how the city's zoning laws are slowing destroying what is left here. At least Wall Street is now done so the collapse will be quick.

Wall Street is done?
Looks like business as usual. Bonuses flowing. No real reform on the horizon. Somewhere the next big debacle is in embryonic form.

Does anyone know if they will be renting by the hour?

I think this represents a significant investment on a stretch of 4th ave that could use it. I'm impressed with how much people are investing. Take the new C-town right above the 25th street stop. that is an amenity most neighborhoods would kill for, and the owners made a pretty significant investment to spruce it up.
