RE: the pedophile and attempted abduction. This stuff enrages me like nothing else. And the guy was an ultra-orthodox Jewish man! It's probably best I don't say on a blog what I would do to a person if they ever tried to do anything to either of my kids, but they would end up wishing they were in prison instead.

In lighter news, the tomato growing problem seems to be a blessing for our health as someone suggested yesterday in the Open Thread that eliminating tomatoes from one's diet was part of an effective weight loss program.

Posted by: Biff Champion at August 27, 2009 8:45 AM

Tomatoes, especially raw ones, have health benefits that far outweigh any additions to weight that they may bring.

More on topic though, I have some plants doing very well and some not so well. It is a very weird growing season indeed.

Anyone see mention of Jon Crow in the rat article??? Is he the same one who was bashing Union Hall???

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at August 27, 2009 8:58 AM

What's with all the complaining? My tomato crop is coming on a treat - 6 varieties, all doing well and all bearing delicious fruit as we speak.

“I, Bernard Mutterperl, have realized for quite some time over the last two or three years that I have a problem that when I see young girls I just want to go after them,”

That statement alone should get him a life sentence. I don't think pedophiles, especially self admitted ones, should ever get out of jail. Why ever let him out? So he can do it again? I don't believe in all that bs about reforming them, etc. They will do it again and again. Either kill them or lock 'em up forever.

Agree Snappy. They will never change. This is a deep seated pathology that has developed over the course of their lifetimes much like a sociopath or a psychopath.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at August 27, 2009 9:26 AM

Biff and Snappy, agreed. Some people hide behind their religion. Sixyears has a great story about something similar to that that he told a few PLUSAs.

On other news....

"Brooklyn's Bicycle Man Unites Hasids and Hipsters".

Looks like DH and myself can finally be friends!

Posted by: Kensingtonian at August 27, 2009 9:26 AM

snappy- I have a feeling this guy will not be leaving prison with the same equipment he went in with. Prison folk absolutely hate pedophiles.

Posted by: bxgrl at August 27, 2009 9:30 AM

I think anyone with the first name of "Bernie" should be in prison.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at August 27, 2009 9:38 AM

While believing almost everyone deserves a second chance, in my mind, that doesn't apply to convincted pedophiles.

Posted by: Biff Champion at August 27, 2009 9:39 AM

"convicted", that is.

Re: BrooklynRats article-
quote "One correspondent said she has often seen them in the garden of a popular Atlantic Avenue restaurant. “I love [this restaurant], so I am not saying this to put them out of business. The rats most likely are back there because there are many restaurants -- but they are HUGE. Last time, I just left with my husband and so did two other people who were at the next table. I only eat inside at [this restaurant], never outside.”

This has been issue for me...Everyone just loves this backyard seating for restaurants but they have created a serious rat problem on many blocks and I wish health dept would forbid them.

Posted by: Petebklyn at August 27, 2009 9:40 AM

DIBS and Kens, both very funny lines!

Posted by: Biff Champion at August 27, 2009 9:40 AM

I'd bet that the rats come from poor domestic management of rubbish, not that of restaurants.

Posted by: Arkady at August 27, 2009 9:44 AM

Right Arkady...if there's nothing there for them they tend not to hang around. Kinda like PLUSAs without any beer.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at August 27, 2009 9:46 AM

mshook, my tomatoes have been coming on like gangbusters as well. 20 plants, 10 varieties, and all but one produced a lot of fruit. My sungold is about nine feet high. I was having nightmares about late blight, but it looks like we dodged it, at least on my block.

Posted by: Frederick Law Homestead at August 27, 2009 9:52 AM

Arklady - customers eating food in backyard are bound to be leaving orbs and crumbs and such of food on ground that attract rats. They then nest close to their reliable food source. (easy to dig in backyards). I am sure there is no restaurant on Smith st that has backyard garden that does not have rats sitting around waiting for your dinner.

Posted by: Petebklyn at August 27, 2009 9:57 AM

are you F'ing kidding me? i eat tomatoes almost everyday on my dinner sandiwch :(

*rob*

Posted by: PitbullNYC at August 27, 2009 10:35 AM

Pete - Orbs? Orts?
Rob - That may be the most healthful thing you do!

Posted by: Arkady at August 27, 2009 10:50 AM

tomatoes - love. Unfortunately I have the proverbial sere and withered thumb, not green. tried to grow cherry tomatoes on my window sill. At the end of the summer I had harvested @ 6 total. Ah well- still better than a few years ago where my plants just took one look at the sky and instantly mummified.

Ahem, TV and print news everywhere claiming recession is over, home prices are up -- BUT NO LINKS ON BROWNSTONER??????? HELLO. HELLO.

Posted by: mopar at August 27, 2009 11:51 AM

I hereby apologize for dissing the Chicken Bicycle Guy. Anybody who can bring together hipsters and Hasidim, even a tiny bit...and more important, anyone who would make a Star of David out of rubber chickens...has my respect. He sounds like a genuine character, even with an ironic fedora.

oops orts. Trying to check brownstoner in middle of training session where other folks can see my screen.
