Despite us being in the midst of the dog days of summer, this blog seems to be on fire. I counted at least 5 threads yesterday with 50+ comments and within them, there were some really interesting discussions. I wonder what the recent stats are regarding hits to the site.

DWI: 3.5 years for murder? If he had taken a gun and shot folks the sentence would have been longer. Why are we treating DWI murderers (yes, they are murderers) with kid gloves? Bull----.


Re: Habitat for Humanity - Love them! I got to work on an 84 hour house they did in PA and had the most fun ever. Everyone should try to volunteer for them at least once. It's a great experience you'll never forget.


Re: Restricted access to the book - Yep, the contents sound despicable enough. But this is a library. If you are going to carry the book, why make consenting adults make an appointment to see it? Either put the damned thing on the shelf or don't carry it at all.

I agree. I commented to Vicki that one should never taalk to the press with expectations that you won't be misquoted or taken out of context or be surprised that the reporter had a specific agenda and would slant your comments to reflect that.

I believe most reporters actually make up about half the "quotes."

But actually, none of the threads with the most comments appeared to be controversial, i.e., Bjork moving to Brooklyn Heights, the House of the Day, the new Mexican Restaurant in Park Slope, and an update on the Avalon. Sentencing guidelines need to be changed. On that we can agree. I won't call Jscheff a racist. I don't know the man and I don't feel like I can stick such a nasty label on him simply based on the crown heights post. The comments may have been ignorant and/or short sighted, but I think more evidence is required before calling someone a racist. I know you'll disagree, What.

You know something I realized 2 things-- ether you're so God Damned stupid or in concert with all this garbage.. Maybe your attitudes toward Covert Race/Class Warfare suits you and the "Agenda". I agree with snappy- 3.5 years is ridiculous. And that's true for any DWI diver who causes an accident. Why do we give them a pass? And in any case- what does this particular story have to do with Brooklyn?

I almost never agree with What but on the Crown Heights thread he was spot on. Still, I don't know that I would actually label jscheff a racist however. But i did call him out on the story because it was obnoxious, condescending, ignorant, inaccurate and just plain stupid. Of course racists possess all those qualities as well, but while not saying jscheff has jumped the R line, I do have to wonder how much he actually bothered to learn about Crown Heights before he wrote that post. And the answer- in a nutshell- nothing.

The Crown Heights thread WAS garbage. It was nothing less than insulting to the folks who live in the neighborhood (like me). The post suggests the neighborhood was a barren wasteland until Tavern on Dean came along to bring poor, misguided Crown Heights "up to its standards," whatever the hell that means.

Crown Heights has museums (Jewish Children's Museum, Brooklyn Chidren's Museum), parks (Lincoln Terrace Park, Brower Park), a terrific public boulevard in Eastern Parkway, tremendous ethnic cuisine, and it annually hosts the city's largest and most colorful parade, the West Indian Day Carnival. The neighborhood is most definitely thriving and is full of great people, but you wouldn't ever dream that from the "jscheff"'s ignorant and misinformed post.

OK....I left work early that day, that's why I missed it. But I remember pointing out a day or two ago that tavern on Nostrand was opened by a black guy who lives about 5-6 blocks away.

I agree that the "standards" comment is out of place, AT BEST.

I also think that Big Jugs, although she may or may not have big jugs, might fit the stereotype of anyone with big jugs being an imbecile.
