StreetLevel: Slope's Old Record Store Up for Rent

record-tape-center-08-2009.jpg
The storefront that houses the Record & Tape Center, the long-running biz near the corner of 9th Street on 5th Avenue, is being advertised for rent for $4,000. The listing is significant because initial reports on the closing of the Slope mainstay said the record store was vacating because the adjacent deli, which owns the record store space, was going to annex it. In any event, the listings broker says the record shop will be in biz until the end of the month. A June story in the Daily News said the Record & Tape center would be relocating to another storefront on the same block.

Props for putting this on here-

indeed, we lost something big even though temporarily.

Another of the old line pre-gentrification stores bites the dust. A shame.

Do both of your shop there?

Posted by: tybur6 at August 21, 2009 2:45 PM

They're just moving down the block.

Posted by: DitmasSnark at August 21, 2009 2:46 PM

So does that make the moving of the record shop an exercise in futility - he could've stayed?

Posted by: Arkady at August 21, 2009 2:55 PM

im sorta confused about what they sell there.?

They sell cassette tapes, 8-track tapes and a few records. But you should ask Denton and Brooklynchimp because they are regular customers, apparently.

When I was cleaning out the basement, they bought all my old LPs.

By the way, is $60 /sq ft the going rate for mediocre commercial rental properties in Park Slope?

Posted by: tybur6 at August 21, 2009 3:25 PM

Right, Arkady...I'd wager that the landlord just wanted them out. Bets on whether they'll actually move to a new space? I wouldn't bet the farm on it, personally.

Low rent for the space

On a related note, I just walked by Neergard Pharmacy. It is now a boutique-type seller of high end bath and beauty products, PLUS (and this really threw me for a loop) the window displays are mostly stuffed animal and toy gifts that are not very hard to find. The place has completely changed.

It's mostly used vinyl and some tapes. Always people in there digging through the stuff whenever I am there. There are many vinyl hounds out there and I am a member.

Posted by: doldrums at August 21, 2009 3:35 PM

So, $60/sq ft is "low rent" in this area? (5th Ave and 9th Street)

Probably have to clear $200+ every day, 365 days a year, on average just to cover the real estate costs for this location. I've never owned a small retail business, but that strikes me as quite difficult. No? And makes $60/sq ft seem quite pricey to me.

Just another business that failed to evolve and serve the community. Adios...

tybur6, being a member of the upper middle class, I did shop there. I shop everywhere, for the same reason.

Like doldrums says, there are many vinyl hounds out there, apparently both of us are card-carrying members.

I'm always interested in the best formats available for recorded music and film. Therefore I buy vinyl, some there. I don't buy VHS or 8-track, for the same reason. You could say then that he catered to the whole 'hood.

Rob, You should stop in, I could swear the have some old video games there also sometimes.

tybur- been going there for years. It's a good spot to dig, and like all good spots- the dollar bins are sometimes full of gems- mostly not.

They sell other stuff besides vinyl- tapes, vhs, cds, eps/lps/etc. I've only bought 45's from them. And a few mix cd's which were pretty good. [Delfonics/Queen mix]-as a request.

i shall miss temporarily-

But the main spot is still- THE THING!
