All Along the Clocktower

Back in June, we heard that David Walentas was finally putting the clocktower apartment at One Main Street (shown at right under construction earlier this year) on the market. The New York Times reported on Friday that this colossal triplex is finally posted, for $25 million. The Times notes that the highest price ever paid for a home in Brooklyn was $11 million in 2006, and the highest for a condo was $7 million, also at One Main Street, in 2008. Even though the market is in a slump, Mr. Walentas said that the space, a three-floor, 6,288-square-foot apartment with four functional 14-foot clocks, is such a unique home that it will require a one-of-a-kind buyer willing to foot the bill. No widget for this????

DIBS, normal mortals have no idea what such a unit would command hence a widget would be a waste of time

I'd love to live in an apartment with a huge fabulous clock window like this one. But the interior is somewhat lackluster for 25 big ones. Granted, I'm not where near the target audience for this pad but for that kind of dough, it shouldn't just be the clock that has wow factor.

Quick show of hands please: who thinks $4000/sf in Brooklyn is doable? Anybody? Anybody?
Posted by: DitmasSnark at August 10, 2009 10:54 AM
ha! that's funny. it only just occurred to me just the other day what is meant by xxx amount per square foot. i mean i KNEW what it meant, but it didnt hit me until i stood on the floor and imaginarily marked myself in a square foot. then was like, wow this costs xxx for just this spot where i can barely stand. wtf!? how the hell can a square foot of something cost more than a playstation 3?!

Here's the slideshow....

It's 6,288 sq. ft., so at $1,000 psf it's worth $6.3MM. Because of the uniqueness of the unit and the most amazing views you'd ever find anywhere in NYC, add another $2MM or so. I say it doesn't go for more than $10MM.
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at August 10, 2009 10:57 AM
Snarky sez $8.5 million.
Posted by: DitmasSnark at August 10, 2009 11:00 AM
$4000/sqft seems impossible - requires some person driven insane with money to will its reality into existence. and the recent economy has seemed to have a strong anti-psychotic on the stratospheically wealthy. yeah, maybe 10mil.
also, agree with mrs. limestone, that the interior was somehow less impressive than i expected. the clocks are amazing, and that central elevator/stairwell is amazing. for instance, the sloped ceilings in the master bedroom are kind of cool in an apartment that isn't worth its space/time in 2007 hedge funds, but at that price it seems a little cramped with small windows.

I actually think it makes a better office space. Would you really want to live there? There are are better places -- with great views and outdoor space.

It would make a bitchin' supervillain lair.

heh. i was thinking more superhero pad than supervillain - total bruce wayne digs.

4 workable 14 foot clocks???...people just have to learn to read the time backwards, or scale themselves out around the front of the building.
Cool space, but not silly money cool space.

Anyone know where to find the floorplan?
Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at August 10, 2009 11:30 AM
I'd buy it but I think having my friends come over and say "Hey, anyone know what time it is" would get old very quickly.

some people doing some strange strange things - ie why pay 500 for a burger; what, just so you can brag to others about eating a 500 burger? So pad needs to locate that person who's able & willing to drop 25 LARGE so he/she can brag "yeah, I dropped 25 big ones on this pad"
Posted by: more4less at August 10, 2009 12:27 PM
G-d, what a gorgeous space. I would still have to seriously do something with that kitchen though. But if I had bucks, oh yeah. (Maybe not 25 mil- I can negotiate! Kens- you'll help a fellow Yid? :-)
Posted by: bxgrl at August 10, 2009 12:34 PM
bxgrl, if you saw my place, you'll understand that you're asking the wrong person for help. I gotz a longggg way to go to help anyone out with $25mil.

For $25 million, I want original detail and NO recessed lighting.
Posted by: CarrollGardened at August 10, 2009 2:23 PM
Anyone ever been inside a functional clock tower as it began ringing? It is seriously cool to witness a twelve foot gear begin stirring to life and the mechanism spin.

"For $25 million, I want original detail and NO recessed lighting."
And an apartment number that is not "P315" or some such thing! My personal pet peeve.

I think Walentas is dealing with the reality of a space like this, which is no matter what you put in the kitchens, baths, etc., whoever buys a place like this will just rip it out anyway. Trump is the master of understanding this, you should see what he used to put in his new condos...
