My brush with celebrity on the weekend:

Last night I went to see my friend's new apartment in the East Village before we went for dinner and drinks. Coming out of the apartment next to him was Adrian Grenier. We got on the elevator together and my friend starts talking to him. Apparently, one of Adrian's friends lives next to my buddy. I told my buddy to befriend his neighbour asap so he can be invited to some cool parties and try to catch some of Adrian's leftovers.

Posted by: Biff Champion at August 31, 2009 9:16 AM

Whatever happened to Grenier's green home in Brooklyn?

Posted by: BrooklynIsHome at August 31, 2009 9:18 AM

he lives in clinton hill right? i've seen him twice at habana outpost.

Posted by: dirty_hipster at August 31, 2009 9:21 AM

No way! I LOVE him. Your friend needs to befriend him ASAP so I can meet him.

Posted by: brighton beoch at August 31, 2009 9:23 AM

He lives on Mr. Brownstoner's block, in a house whose renovation was observed here.

Posted by: rf at August 31, 2009 9:25 AM

"Whatever happened to Grenier's green home in Brooklyn?"

I thought he lives in Fort Greene. Please read the fine print. HE does not live next to my friend. His friend lives next to my friend. He was just visiting. Looked exactly like he does on the show...big curly hair, scruff...

For the benefit of those folks (hint: myself) who are not tuned into pop culture, may I ask: who is Adrian Grenier?

Who is Adrian Grenier?

Morning all :)

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at August 31, 2009 9:29 AM

Phew...thanks Benson...I wasn't the first to ask that question! Ha! I too am no tuned into pop culture :)

"For the benefit of those folks (hint: myself) who are not tuned into pop culture, may I ask: who is Adrian Grenier?"

he plays the lead role of vincent chase on the HBO series "entourage"

Posted by: dirty_hipster at August 31, 2009 9:30 AM

Thank you benson, I'm clueless as well. [No comments DIBS. : P ]

Posted by: cobblehiller at August 31, 2009 9:30 AM

I don't have HBO. Has he been in anything else I might have seen?

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at August 31, 2009 9:32 AM

Ah Entourage, that explains it. I cannot watch that show for some reason. I've tried.

Posted by: cobblehiller at August 31, 2009 9:33 AM

Never seen Entourage. Don't have HBO.

"Losers

- This coming from a guy who is on vacation for two weeks as of today and still posted at 9:28AM? Sad sad little man...
:-)

"Ah Entourage, that explains it. I cannot watch that show for some reason. I've tried."
- I personally find the show unwatchable as well.

Posted by: Biff Champion at August 31, 2009 9:36 AM

"This coming from a guy who is on vacation for two weeks as of today and still posted at 9:28AM?"

Smirk!

Posted by: cobblehiller at August 31, 2009 9:39 AM

Entourage = Sex and the City for males, except it hasn't filled NYC with vapid 22 year old females.

Posted by: dirty_hipster at August 31, 2009 9:39 AM

I find all of HBO's series unwatchable. I don't subscribe to HBO at home. When I travel I sometimes tune in to see if I'm really missing anything. My conclusion is always the same: not missing anything.

So, I see that I missed quite a week in Brownstoner country during my vacation!

Posted by: benson at August 31, 2009 9:41 AM

How was it benson? Did the weather interfere? Was that the ship you were on that was parked at Red Hook yesterday?

Yes, it was INSANE last week!! Have you visited What's blog?

Posted by: cobblehiller at August 31, 2009 9:44 AM

As some of you know via weekend PLUSA emailing, I did tours this weekend of Bushwick and Greenpoint.

Not too much to see in Bushwick, but I ate the Dominican breakfast at a Spanish family restaurant / diner called "El Rey Restaurant". It was at Fulton and Bushwick. One of the best diner breakfasts I've ever had. A huge plate of chunky mashed potatoes and red onions, sausage, eggs, fried cheese... It was amazing. The breakfast, along with a bottle of beer, was under $9!

Greenpoint was much better than I expected. I'm still recovering from the delicious and filling Polish food that I thought my 10 miles of walking on Sunday would burn off. It is a very interesting neighbourhood and I would highly recommend people visit it. Eclectic mix of new and old world. Lots to see there in terms of shops, restaurants, architecture, etc. A Rite Aid store that was mentioned in my book is in an old theater that used to be a roller rink and was converted to a drug store. There is a big ramp leading down to the main area of the store which still has rails around the aisles and a huge disco ball hanging from the ceiling. I think Rob would love it.

Posted by: Biff Champion at August 31, 2009 9:45 AM

It is absolutely SATC for males, except for some reason I love it. Maybe I was a guy in another life.

Posted by: brighton beoch at August 31, 2009 9:45 AM

I wonder if Rob's been allowed back from exile. I want to hear about his sister's party. Guess I'll look at What's blog.

Posted by: Arkady at August 31, 2009 9:50 AM

What has a blog? What else did I miss? What's the url? (There's an Abbot & Costello routine in there somewhere.)

Posted by: slopefarm at August 31, 2009 9:51 AM

Dirty, how was your bday? Are you sober yet?

Posted by: brighton beoch at August 31, 2009 9:54 AM

Cobblehiller;

Yes, that was the ship I was on. My vacation was GREAT, despite the weather. I love cruising! It is so relaxing being at sea, cut off from phones, e-mails, etc. You can really unwind out there.

We were supposed to take off from Red Hook on the 22nd, but we had to stay in port for one night due to Hurricane Bill, and we had to skip Newport. We stayed on track for Boston, Bar Harbor, St. John's, New Brunswick and Halifax, Nova Scotia.

St.John's is a sad, haunting place. It is clearly a city that has seen better days. It's filled with lots of victorian homes, but many of them are in a state of disrepair. Halifax, on the other hand, is a booming place. We rented a car in Nova Scotia and drove to a small fishing village that looked like it came out of a Currier and IVes print. Just beautiful, and the folks are really friendly.

When I came home on Saturday, it struck me that Park Slope is the total opposite of the environment on a cruise. On a cruise ship, everyone is into eating, eating, and more eating. No one is uptight about anything! Non-organic, bountiful food - no problem!!

"The breakfast, along with a bottle of beer, was under $9!"

I love that you had beer with bkfast. Sort of like a mimosa I guess . . . .

Posted by: brighton beoch at August 31, 2009 9:56 AM

benson, I completely agree with you regarding your assessment of Saint John and Halifax. (I believe you mean Saint John, New Brunswick. It is often confused with St. John's, Newfoundland).

While I'm happy for the people of Saint John that they now have tours coming through to boost the local economy, it is a curious (not in the six beer sense of the word) stop for a cruise ship. Really very little to see there - it's pretty much the Buffalo of Canada (although not quite as bad). You're also correct that the people are incredibly friendly - like all Canadians!

Did you go to Peggy's Cove when you were in Halifax?

Posted by: Biff Champion at August 31, 2009 10:01 AM

Adrian Grenier is a celebrity?!?!
But okay.
Some of you are so easily amused and impressed :-)

Posted by: Bitter Renter Girl at August 31, 2009 10:02 AM

"I love that you had beer with bkfast. Sort of like a mimosa I guess . . . ."

beoch, where I'm from, beer is our orange juice. :-)
Actually, my "breakfast" was around noon, so it didn't seem that odd. And I had already walked a ton and needed some Canadian petrol to keep me going.

Posted by: Biff Champion at August 31, 2009 10:07 AM

I just want to apologize for being a little grouchy last time I saw a bunch of y'all. After you left, I went to another bar and got a pint. After two sips I thought, "I'd rather be drinking this in the comfort of my own home." So I stood up, walked right out and walked home, a kind of lengthy walk, sipping as I went. I was in a weird mood that night!

Posted by: infinitejester at August 31, 2009 10:09 AM

Biff, Greenpoint is indeed a wonderful area. Did you walk down Guernsey between Norman and Meserole? It's one of my favorite blocks:

http://www.scoutingny.com/?p=11

I also recommend Ashbox, the northernmost coffee shop in Brooklyn.

Posted by: Capital PLUSA at August 31, 2009 10:13 AM

Biff, I wasn't judging . . . I was applauding.

Posted by: brighton beoch at August 31, 2009 10:13 AM

Are you talking about Saturday Jester? You didn't seem grouchy at all.

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at August 31, 2009 10:17 AM

Biff;

Yeah, I was amazed that the ship would stop at St. John (thanks for the correction), but my guess is that the city is looking at them as their silver bullet for reviving the economy. They just built a new terminal, and three ships were docked there.

We did go to Peggy's Cove, but I didn't stay long. It is so over-run with tourists and tour buses. I felt sorry for the residents of the village, as it seems that the tourists outnumber them 4 to 1. We went to Hackett's Cove, instead - the picture-perfect village I described above.

Posted by: benson at August 31, 2009 10:20 AM

beoch, of course! I knew that, hence the smiley in my response.

Capital PLUSA, I don't recall walking on Guernsey. It might be the only street I DIDN'T walk on. I was on Norman and Meserole, however. Other streets I recall being on were Nassau, Bayard, Lorimer, Manhattan, Driggs, Russell, Humboldt, McGuinness, Noble, Kent, Java, Huron, India, Franklin, West. Also went through McCarren Park and McGolrick Park.

Peter Pan Bakery on Manhattan Avenue had some amazing donuts too.

Posted by: Biff Champion at August 31, 2009 10:24 AM

benson, I'm glad you enjoyed it. Peggy's Cove is definitely very touristy. Still worth a visit, but probably nicer to go more off the beaten path like you did.

jester, I didn't notice any sign of grouchiness in you whatsoever. Not at all.

Posted by: Biff Champion at August 31, 2009 10:28 AM

Yeah Snappy, thanks.

Biff, what a walk! Love a good walk.

Posted by: infinitejester at August 31, 2009 10:28 AM

Sigh. We are boring today! Where's the excitement? Where's the controversy? (I'm starting to sound like M4L pushing for a fight!)

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at August 31, 2009 10:41 AM

Oh, and as an aside...I stopped at the Park Slope Chip Shop on the way home from Floyd's Saturday night (thanks for the PLUSA van ride Kens!) and picked up some chicken tenders and chips after tasting what you all had from the one in BH. IT WAS HORRIBLE!!! The PS Chip Shop needs to take a page from its sister shop in BH. The tenders were severely overcooked and the fries were literally dripping with grease. YUCKOLA :-(

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at August 31, 2009 10:47 AM

Adrian Grenier also played the boyfriend in The Devil Wears Prada.

Posted by: Randi banned at August 31, 2009 10:47 AM

Biff,

You play any mini-golf in Bushwick? Putting Lot is hilarious and one block from Northeast Kingdom.

woop woop! i'm back!

Posted by: Randi banned at August 31, 2009 10:49 AM

Park Slope Chip Shop has lousy chips. It breaks my fried-food-lovin' heart.

Posted by: DitmasSnark at August 31, 2009 10:49 AM

I've seen and actually own The Devil Wears Prada, but somehow I'm blanking on the boyfriend...I'll have to pop that in this afternoon. Thanks Snark!

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at August 31, 2009 10:49 AM

I didn't like the chips from BH either (too flimsy) but the PS chips were exceptionally horrible. I was shocked. It had the consistency of those garbage Oreida frozen fries that you bake in the oven in addition to a ton of oil.

I will say this though, the newspaper wrapping my food was fresh...it was that day's NYT :)

slopefarm, I love mini-golf but didn't see it on my tour. Even if I had, I doubt I would have played. It's enough I drink and do walking tours on my own. Playing mini-golf by myself would indicate a level of pathetic loserness that even I would be appalled at.

None of you people saw Drive Me Crazy starring Melissa Joan Hart and Adrien Grenier, both of whom also appeared in the eponymous Britney Spears Video?

holla, I got to use eponymous in a real sentence.

Posted by: CG_ups at August 31, 2009 11:10 AM

Where is there mini golf in Brooklyn?

Posted by: Bitter Renter Girl at August 31, 2009 11:11 AM

My experience with Melissa Joan Hart pretty much ended when 'Clarissa Explains It All' went off the air many moons ago!

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at August 31, 2009 11:11 AM

Biff,

Head back to Bushwick with the Champettes before Putting Lot closes. They will love it. Putting lot is like the Dr. Seuss version of mini golf, with a sustainable design twist. Wyckoff Ave just off Flushing Ave (Jefferson St. stop on the L).

Posted by: slopefarm at August 31, 2009 11:13 AM

Thanks slopefarm. We've done mini-putt before. In fact, the last time was on Governor's Island during the arts festival when they had a fascinating course created by designers and inventors. I had no idea there was a mini-putt in Bushwick. As an aside, Brooklyn Heights got a mini-putz when I moved there.

Posted by: CG_ups at August 31, 2009 11:27 AM

Exhausting, frustrating weekend. Mr. Cypress Hill came over to help me paint my apartment. We had to move major furniture and about 89 gazillion books. Finally, Sunday afternoon, covered with Benjamin Moore Aura and sweat, we finished (except for moving back the 89 gazillion books).

I went into the bathroom to wash my hands, glanced up at the ceiling and saw...a giant bubble in the ceiling over the bathtub in the EXACT spot that I had repaired just three weeks ago.

The asshole upstairs has a leak. This is the third time it has damaged my bathroom, the third time he has "fixed" his leak, the third time I will have to endure several days of construction disruption.

The asshole upstairs, I just found out, has STILL not paid my workman for the damage repair of last month. I want to kill him. Or somebody.

Posted by: Bitter Renter Girl at August 31, 2009 12:43 PM

I like Entourage. Do people in LA really talk so politically incorrectly at the office?
Turtle's Affair with the beautiful actress that played Dawn Soprano is the most unlikely part of the story and yet they are actually an item in real life.
Vince's new Israeli security detail is pretty hillarious.
It's an unusual show for TV. The men are not pushovers or wimps. They break women's hearts and are not run over by a bus at the end of the program.

Posted by: Minard Lafever at August 31, 2009 12:44 PM

I would like to copy the following quote of mine from the "Judicial Don Quixote" thread. I share it with you because it is just so right.

"Your inability to understand Goldman Sachs does not make them evil. It makes you stupid."

That is all. Have a good one.

sorry wasder, I only do the giant shebangs organized a month in advance or the ultra last minute ones that leave everyone wondering how they missed it. Welcome back!

"Jessi and Biffy left like 5 minutes before we did."

Strange, usually the real party starts after I leave. I guess the loss of Jessi was too much. She dropped me at Key Foods on Montague where I picked up a giant bag of cheddar cheese flavoured kettle corn that I finished almost in one pathetic sitting while watching TV.

6k for cz??? Holy crapsticks! That seems outrageous.

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at August 31, 2009 1:15 PM

by small diamond, i meant 1 karat rather than a 2+ karat planetoid. she has small hands, tiny fingers, i figure it'll look nice, be real, and be classic rather than some kind of donald trumpian type hot mess. $6k can do it, no? am i out of touch on ring prices?

Posted by: CG_ups at August 31, 2009 1:17 PM

I'd rather get a simple platinum or white gold band along with the sweetest proposal ever than to get a fake diamond. Tell him to nix that idea and keep shopping. Maybe try places like Zales or Macy's for lower cost ideas?

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at August 31, 2009 1:18 PM

You can certainly get a small diamond for that but why not get a pretty antique colored stone & do a diamond after they've bought the house & paid for kids' college? All the 20 & 30 somethings I know really regretted having spent so much on a glam stone when the realities of marital bliss settled in.

DEFINTELY do not let your friend spend $6K on a fake diamond. This place in the diamond district is very reliable/honest and has good prices and quality. www.zolands.com Your friend should go in with a budget and let them show him what he can get for that amt.

Virginia Gotti, mom to the lovely youths pictured above (or are they youts?) had an exhibit of her paintings at the Hope & Anchor last year. They were weirdly good in a way that was difficult to put your finger on... the subject matter: anatomically awkward, ultra skinny women, posing next to out-of-perspective objects (chaise lounges, pools, etc) amid what I imagined were unmistakably Gotti-like surroundings. The fact that they were still somehow DECENT PAINTINGS was an especially tough nut to swallow.

Posted by: herkimermaid at August 31, 2009 2:05 PM

Snaps - I don't qualify for that.

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at August 31, 2009 2:20 PM

CG_ups, I went safe route on ring for the Mrs - went classic / simple route. I wasn't endorsing that ring for your friend but rather was questioning if it's that fugly.

anyhow, another option for ring shopping is the chinese dealers on Canal St and the Chinese & Jewish dealers on Bowery St - btw, the Bowery area was the original diamond district b4 they moved it midtown. Of memory, I bought my ring at the one of the jewish dealers on Bowery (near Hester St) cause it was ~10-12% cheaper than the diamond district dealers were quoting me. I even played the politically correct approach via buying rock from Canadien mines (rock has a laser edged bear logo in the diamond to designate this) vs. the conflict diamonds from Africa. Maybe your friend can go with that too to score some brownie pts

hmmm. convenient to transportation would be brooklyn heights or fort greene? those are both out of my usual baliwick, but i can suggest a couple of fun inexpensive outdoor seating places in CG/CH! Close to the F AND the G! :)

Abilene - very good, mellow, sidewalk seating
Zombie Hut - don't be scared off by the name, the garden out back is surprisingly pleasant

Or for indoor fun-ness:
Brooklyn Social or Brooklyn Inn - cos they have brooklyn in their name and they are good places
Prime Meats (sort of like Clover Club but less crowded)

Posted by: CG_ups at August 31, 2009 2:25 PM

Posted by: dirty_hipster at August 31, 2009 2:38 PM

CG_Ups, you can buy a really nice REAL ring for $2,000 in any style, such as new Tiffany style, new fashion-y artsy style, or vintage Deco or Victorian.

Slopefarm, the closing went off without a hitch. The sellers were unbelievably nice and they not only fixed all the plumbing they said they would, but they even fixed peeling plaster and paint they didn't need to, and left us an eight-foot ladder. They have fantastic taste -- the pumpkin paint in the dining room goes perfectly with the house. We are thrilled.

Biff, you went to Bushwick and didn't see anything? Ask me next time!

"Are rob, what and randi really banned? What happened that was different from the last year or so to cause that? Any other major PLUSA news? Any gatherings planned? Did Mopar close without a hitch?"

See the Carlton Mews thread on Friday. I believe Mopar closed, don't know about hitches.

I guess I'm the only one who finds the idea of buying jewelry on line, especially an engagement ring, to be strange. 6k for a FAKE diamond, that's plain dumb.

"On a cruise ship, everyone is into eating, eating, and more eating. No one is uptight about anything! Non-organic, bountiful food - no problem!!"

Yeah but Benson, did you see how much many of them weighed? On the one cruise we have taken so far we tried to enjoy the food, but we also speed-walked two miles every morning. We ended up around the same weight as when we got on.

Posted by: Arkady at August 31, 2009 2:43 PM

"Biff, you went to Bushwick and didn't see anything?"

mopar, I did see some things and Bushwick does have an amazing history, but I just didn't find it as interesting as some of the other neighbourhoods and destinations that I've toured such as Crown Heights, GreenWood Cemetery, Sheepshead Bay, BedStuy, Greenpoint, Park Slope, Victorian Flatbush, all of which are so unique in their own way. Bushwick was fine, but just didn't have that WOW factor for me.

Posted by: Biff Champion at August 31, 2009 2:46 PM

the guy who is buying the ring has been stationed in iraq for the past 14 months, which is why he's buying the ring online. i know he can get a better ring for $6K, which was why i was asking for suggestions. i don't really buy jewelry but i figured some people on the board could help. which they did.

Denton;

Indeed, but that goes to my point about a cruise ship being 180 degrees out of phase with the PS vibe. Folks on a cruise ship eat alot, they enjoy it, and don't mind the weight!

I tried to be good, but I think I put on a couple of pounds.

Posted by: brighton beoch at August 31, 2009 3:50 PM

CG you crack me up :)

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at August 31, 2009 3:50 PM

"everyone's welcome bitter renter, even the sausages, right?"

- sausages have t*ts too; just not as big as some of the non-sausages (although I'm developing quite the rack after gaining weight thanks to my new diet of PBR and pierogies)

"Bitter, come on along! We're not anti-sausage, per se, just excluding them this time."

- wait, so sausages ARE excluded?

Posted by: Biff Champion at August 31, 2009 3:51 PM

CG...just don't go usin' the Flobee! LOL

"What she said . . . don't forget there are 2 of us."

But only three feet and thus three shoes in total required, right, my Siamese Sirens?

I think we're mixing up festivities. I was suggesting Mezcal's for an impromptu margarita tonight. Not trying to take over planning of the 'Bake

Posted by: Biff Champion at August 31, 2009 3:54 PM

PLUSA meet up: 4th ave pub is great and has a nice garden. And they have the BEST sangria EVER. Very proximate to Pacific/Atlantic hub.

There's only 1 Mexcals worth patronizing and that's the one on the corner of President and 5th. Burrito Tintan with chorizo... yum! Now that's some sausage I can sink my teeth into :)

Posted by: herkimermaid at August 31, 2009 3:54 PM

CG, I vote for the first one.

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at August 31, 2009 3:54 PM

Posted by: dirty_hipster at August 31, 2009 3:55 PM

What 4th ave pub Herki?

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at August 31, 2009 3:58 PM

Two or 3 get-togethers are being discussed, right? A real 'Stoner one soon-ish, a possible sundowner this evening & a Clambake at a still-to-be-determined time & place. (And maybe a 4th event Weds or Thurs of this week?)
Signed,
Confused in PS.

der schwarze koelner?

Posted by: CG_ups at August 31, 2009 4:01 PM

I realized by saying "titted person" I included some hefty sausages.
Sorry ladies.

So when do we roast the sausages on an open fire?

Posted by: Bitter Renter Girl at August 31, 2009 4:01 PM

Wait...so let's go by order of the date. Who is going to the margarita mash-up this evening?

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at August 31, 2009 4:01 PM

Oh...speaking of roasting sausages...who here has a membership to costco? My friend in Jersey had some costco chicken sausages that her husband grilled up. YUM! I NEED TO GET MY HANDS ON A PACKAGE!

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at August 31, 2009 4:03 PM

Ok, may I suggest:

1) Margarita sundowner tonight

2) Open PLUSAfest this Thursday (location TBD)

3) Clambake next week

Posted by: Biff Champion at August 31, 2009 4:03 PM

i'm out for tonight but possible for tue or wed.

Posted by: CG_ups at August 31, 2009 4:03 PM

Why, it's the pub on 4th Ave of course Snappy! I love that joke. I'm like "let's go to the 4th ave pub!" and people are like, "where is it?" and I'm like "4th Ave silly!". It NEVER gets old. It's between Bergen and St Marks. Did the sangria catch your eye, eh snappy?? You won't be disappointed, truusssst meeee!

Posted by: herkimermaid at August 31, 2009 4:04 PM

I thought margarita mash up was tomorrow for the ladies.
BIFF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by: Arkady at August 31, 2009 4:07 PM

Wait a second here! Ignore the men for a moment! Ladies...are we doing our clambake this week or next? Any preferences?

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at August 31, 2009 4:07 PM

"I thought margarita mash up was tomorrow for the ladies."

I don't mind if the margarita mash up is tomorrow, but can we please move the 'bake to next week?

How about:

1) Margarita mashup / PLUSAPALOOZA tomorrow night

2) Clambake next week

Posted by: Biff Champion at August 31, 2009 4:07 PM

Hmmmmm...CG...that sounds yummy...I'll be by for dinner. Just be on the lookout for the limping PLUSA wearing a bib and holding a fork and knife :)

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at August 31, 2009 4:08 PM

I am so damned confused about the plans that are being made !!!

I wish I was back on the cruise ship right now. They make a martini called a "London Lemondae" that is just so great!!! Tastes just like lemonade, but packs a punch.

Posted by: benson at August 31, 2009 4:10 PM

1) Margarita mashup / PLUSAPALOOZA tomorrow night

2) Clambake next week

Better, Yes, will attend!!

"But only three feet and thus three shoes in total required, right, my Siamese Sirens?"

Actually 4 feet. We are joined at the knees, as you may recall.

"very fancy - u ladies know your EURO size"

Dirty, you've met us. You KNOW we are fancy.

i'm out for tonight - high stakes fantasy football draft!!

Posted by: dirty_hipster at August 31, 2009 4:12 PM

i'll definitely let you know the next time i make the chicken apple sausage potato delight. :)

Posted by: CG_ups at August 31, 2009 4:12 PM

If the margarita mashup is going to double as the full on sausage and bun plusapalooza, then can we do it at the Mezcal that Herki mentioned? Or is that too hard for everyone?

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at August 31, 2009 4:12 PM

i have a freezer full of frozen green beans. i don't know what the hell i was thinking. it's like 7-8 bags worth. recipes anyone?

Posted by: CG_ups at August 31, 2009 4:13 PM

So it's officially confirmed that there will be margarita madness tomorrow night and a clambake next week.

Should we go with one of herk's suggestions for tomorrow?

Posted by: Biff Champion at August 31, 2009 4:14 PM

That's a lot of beans. Try allrecipes.com

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at August 31, 2009 4:14 PM

ok bitter and snappy- I just got back. Yes, I spent the day curled in fetal position on he bathroom floor weeping over the fact that some other Bronx person won (SOB!!) But thanks- I'm better now. Can I substitute a magic marker for embroidery- I'm too disheartened over losing megamillions and my weeping will make the dye run in the floss. :*(

Posted by: bxgrl at August 31, 2009 4:15 PM

The 4th ave pub ....is there outdoor space? Serve more than beer for our non beer drinking PLUSAs?

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at August 31, 2009 4:15 PM

I'm like CG_ups' freezer...full of beans.

Posted by: Biff Champion at August 31, 2009 4:16 PM

Posted by: CG_ups at August 31, 2009 4:17 PM

Bxgirl, when I first heard that one of the two winning tickets were sold in NYC I about danced the jig on my bad foot. Then 1010 Wins announced that it was sold in the BX. Oh, how my little heart sank :(

Posted by: East New York at August 31, 2009 4:23 PM

yup the 4th ave pub has a garden in the back. They have a full bar and a very nice selection of beer on tap AND free popcorn to nosh on. I'm a little lost of events/places/preferences... just sort of tossing out suggestions willy-nilly, apologies... But, if margaritas are happening tomorrow then the 5th ave Mezcals has outdoor seating and the weather is supposed to be nice too. I had a margaritas yesterday at Pequena in Ft Greene. Also a top notch choice for the frozen variety.

Posted by: herkimermaid at August 31, 2009 4:23 PM

bxgrl, what a bummer! I was sure you'd won. Damn b!tches!

Posted by: bitter retort at August 31, 2009 4:24 PM

4th Ave Pub works for me.

Where's CGar? Not like him to miss a whole day; vacation or not. I hope his visitors didn't drive him to do something crazy over the weekend!

Posted by: Biff Champion at August 31, 2009 4:30 PM

Hey, anyone know source where I could find consumer spending and consumer confidence number from this year to prior year. I am freakin' trying to find crap that doesn't include the cash for clunkers numbers that are pushing all the numbers out of wack. Too bad DIBS is on vaca. Anyone else can help?

4:30 and not even 300 posts. You people are pathetic.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at August 31, 2009 4:32 PM

consumer confidence is online, you can google u michigan consumer confidence or abc consumer confidence. otherwise, you can also look it up on bloomberg, but internet is probably easier.

Posted by: CG_ups at August 31, 2009 4:33 PM

Not sure where you can find the breakout, Kens.

Posted by: bxgrl at August 31, 2009 4:35 PM

"Kens...pull your pony up to the What's website..."

I just looked at "http://asshathill.blogspot.com/" and there's an ad for free Trojan condoms. Is that some sorto of subliminal connection to Asshats?

This probably the last PLUSA bash of the summer (hate to remind, but Labor Day is next weekend), and y'all are just going to an outdoor garden to sip beer? YAWN!
How about a place to really let your hair down and either sing or dance the summer away?

Posted by: Bitter Renter Girl at August 31, 2009 4:39 PM

Brighton....nooooo! Back away from the yoga! By all means you should pickle your liver with the sweetness of margaritas. Yoga is bad for a PLUSA's social life.

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at August 31, 2009 4:40 PM

"Two words, DH: Leon Washington"

What round would be good value?

If you can get him in the 3rd round, you would be golden. Leon is not a starter, so he's not a first round pick. However, he's very productive (led league in all-purpose yards last year), so he will be a 2nd rounder for a lot of folks.

Thus if you can hold off and pick him in the 3rd round, you will have a ace in the hole on Sunday. Just my two cents.

Posted by: East New York at August 31, 2009 4:40 PM

Bitter Renter...that was Ellis...you missed it :-(

Go see "It might get loud", it's at the Cobble Hill Movie theatre. We went last night, BH gives it a two thumbs up!

1) Margarita Madness tomorrow night at 6pm at 4th Avenue Pub. Open to all PLUSAs.

2) Clambake sometime next week. Just for female PLUSAs. Day, time and location TBD.

"I don't think they serve frozen margaritas at the 4th ave pub!!"

Herki, the old bait and switch never hurt attendance at a 'Stoner gathering.

Ok, we'll call it "Magic Hat #9 Madness"

Posted by: Biff Champion at August 31, 2009 5:01 PM

Oh, that Biff, you just can't keep him away from organizing!

Posted by: infinitejester at August 31, 2009 5:01 PM

jester, what can I say? I'm a born PLUSA.

Posted by: Biff Champion at August 31, 2009 5:02 PM

Oh, Biff, you were looking for *architecture*? Oh!

There's a little bit of that on and around Bushwick Ave. Not too much, mind you -- most everything has been covered up with aluminum siding.

Otherwise, I'd recommend going to some kind of art, music, or dance performance thing, preferably at an illegal party on a loft rooftop. Or the mini-golf thing, which I haven't been to but understand is some kind of art installation. Also stop by for a drink or snack at Tandem, which is a very beautiful place decorated with salvaged gas lamps, old bathroom fixtures, and a wall of 60s-style art tiles handmade by one of the owners, an artist named Jane.

Posted by: mopar at August 31, 2009 5:03 PM

"born PLUSA" - hmm, might be my next neck tattoo.

Posted by: infinitejester at August 31, 2009 5:06 PM

mopar, yeah, the tours focus on architecture, cultural institutions and other buildings/sites of note, history, restaurants, shops, etc. The focus/intent is not at all on attending live performances (or illegal parties, for that matter. Although that would be fun too).

I forgot to mention that the NY Hall of Science also has a brand spanking new mini putt course that is fabulous. Only problem is NY Hall of Science is in Queens, so don't tell anyone I recommended it.
:-)

Tandem sounds fabulous. I would have loved to check it out.

CG...oh no!!!!

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at August 31, 2009 5:10 PM

Can you hop in a car svc and zoom over there in time? It's likely that the 1st 30 mins or so is just check-in.

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at August 31, 2009 5:11 PM

no, i effed up. they say to show up 15 minutes before the "start" time. obviously i'm too dumb to be on the show. :( i was in denial, because at first i was so happy that i could try out so late (6:30) rather than having to leave work early with some vague fuzzy excuse. WHY AM I SUCH A SPAZZ?!? blergh.

Posted by: CG_ups at August 31, 2009 5:14 PM

Ugh. So sorry. Maybe you can get a new try-out date? Until then, get thee to an alcoholic beverage!

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at August 31, 2009 5:41 PM

Yes, Biffy is totally safe. Good ole PLUSA that he is :)

Posted by: bxgrl at August 31, 2009 5:56 PM

Well, the poo is still an issue so other than effing up my bathroom about 5-6 times a day, he's fine! Remember those little spinny tops that were in the goodie bags at Ellis? He is batting one around the floor right now and enjoying himself immensely. It has become his new favorite toy. That and my toes :)

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at August 31, 2009 5:57 PM

snappy just had a thought... how are you with stairs vs your foot? Asking b/c there are stairs down to the garden at the 4th ave pub.

Posted by: herkimermaid at August 31, 2009 6:00 PM

Cobble, thanks. Maybe I'll show up tomorrow. i'm leary truth be told. The last time I met someone on-line I ended up having a year long relationship with and that's why I'm in the situation I'm in: Looking for a cheap rental and very bitter.
If I see another man, I just might knee the sausage in the meatballs.

Posted by: Bitter Renter Girl at August 31, 2009 6:01 PM

Beckett & Widget love that top too! It's my new fitness regimen - constantly crawling under things to find it. Yoga has nothing on top-finding.

Posted by: Arkady at August 31, 2009 6:01 PM

Arkady...I just fished it from behind the toilet! Ha! I plan to pick up another pack of them...I'll give you half of em (it's like a pack of 12).

Herki...I can do stairs...just very very slowly :)

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at August 31, 2009 6:03 PM

"Yoga has nothing on top-finding."

Now you tell me. Maybe I should multi-task. Go to the movie with Biff and BRG, and put my popcorn under the seat.

Posted by: brighton beoch at August 31, 2009 6:04 PM

LOL Brighton!

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at August 31, 2009 6:07 PM

Another yoga substitute is plumbing. I've spent hours today fitting new works into a toilet - the contortions to get at all the connections require extremely taxing pretzel shapes.

Posted by: Arkady at August 31, 2009 6:08 PM

Bitter, Ah, well then, I feel your pain, that sounds extra-special SUCK-O.

Then come to the ClamBake! It'll just be us gals, and a great group, too!

Posted by: cobblehiller at August 31, 2009 6:09 PM

Bitter Renter - Our whole group is really benign ;(

Posted by: Arkady at August 31, 2009 6:09 PM

"Another yoga substitute is plumbing."

LOL. I am sure they'll be offering a class at Equinox.

Posted by: brighton beoch at August 31, 2009 6:14 PM

Cobble, I know clean the bathroom at least twice a day...scrubbing and mopping the floor and scrubbing down the tub. I'm thinking of buying stock in Lysol and Formula 409. Seriously. I'm starting to think he's secretly laughing at me while I scrub away and plot what mess he'll make next!

Ha! The like to see us get up and work :) Thankfully Pia doesn't do it to me too. She just follows me around, waiting for me to sit or lay down so she can spread out across me and go to sleep. She's quite the snugglepuss.

Posted by: dirty_hipster at August 31, 2009 6:32 PM

Bxgirl...so you've trained him eh? I'll get you my pretty **insert wicked witch laugh here**!

Dirty, I'm still here. I have less than nothing to add on the cat front, so I've been silent . . . or as silent as I can be.

Was just reading about someone attacked on BushwickBK. Maybe it's lucky I'm moving. Getting tired of both the hipster invasion and the hipster hate.

I miss The What and Rob. When are they going to be unbanned?

Posted by: mopar at August 31, 2009 6:40 PM

The ban might be permanent, Mopar :-(

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at August 31, 2009 6:42 PM

permanent? that would suck

Posted by: dirty_hipster at August 31, 2009 6:51 PM

Oh. Did the offending comments get pulled? I read the thread and the comments that are still there didn't seem so bad. I bet The What was committing blogicide on purpose. You can tell he's bored with posting here. The What and Rob were lots of fun. Rob does not deserve banning.

Posted by: mopar at August 31, 2009 6:53 PM

It would suck indeed. They piss a lot of people off, but you can't deny that they provide something interesting to the site.

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at August 31, 2009 6:53 PM

Mopar, that was the thing. In that Carlton Mews thread there was nothing said (by Rob anyway) that was out of line. He simply said what everyone else was thinking...the photos attached to that thread were absolute crap. I think he got bounced for what he was saying in the Sunset Park school thread. I personally don't totally disagree with what he said there, but I will admit that the way he said it was quite harsh and likely very offensive to many. Still not worth a permanent ban though.

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at August 31, 2009 6:59 PM

i was banned a couple of weeks ago, imagine that, me banned.
I don't know what I wrote except one post where I was critical, perhaps a little snide, about the credibility of the NY Times. Zap! banned! It doesn't take much, although in Rob's case, it took a lot.
Beware of Fridays with rain in the forecast for the weekend.

Minard...you got banned? Did you ask Mr. B. why? How long did your banning last?

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at August 31, 2009 7:04 PM

Minard, that doesn't seem right.

Posted by: mopar at August 31, 2009 7:05 PM

I think the ban lasted about two maybe three weeks. I gave up after a while so I didn't start posting again for maybe a month or more.

Posted by: Minard Lafever at August 31, 2009 7:22 PM

I'm still here, but not for long.
So I guess no movies tonight and I sure as hell am not going to do any yoga!

Posted by: Bitter Renter Girl at August 31, 2009 7:25 PM

I'm amazed Minard!
Bitter - How are you at plumbing?
