Today's FGVOTD is dedicated to Cobble and Snappy, who are both celebrating their birthday today!

This must be the most famous rendition of "Happy Birthday" ever performed. It ties together the birthdays two of our most beloved PLUSAs and the recent death of Ted Kennedy (and yesterday's historic PLUSA Presidential election, but I digress...)

Cobble and Snappy, have a wonderful day and very happy and healthy year.

Enjoy:

Ditto - is it available online? Or do I actually have to buy a newspaper (who does that anymore?)

Thanks Biffy :) And thank you Dave for the cakes!

Bitter retort, it was delightful meeting you and brighton beoch last night. You two are absolutely hysterical and fun to hang out with. Hopefully you'll make it out to the next big 'Stoner gathering and meet many more PLUSAs, PITs (PLUSAs-in-Training) and lurkers. Thanks for inviting people out.

Posted by: Biff Champion at August 28, 2009 9:27 AM

Thanks Arkady :)

Hari tried some tuna this morning...loved it! May be a bad idea for him, but I always spoil the fuzzies on my birthday...I figure I can't treat myself to yummies and leave them out!

Happy Birthday to the founders of CobbleSnaps Productions!

I was at the cleaners this morning and they had the Today show on. Miley Cyrus was on stage, singing her little heart out and I thought of Rob :(

As for Swallow, yes, it's sad but true. I came back from Sixyears' place on Sunday morning and found the little guy floating at the top of his mini-tank. I didn't want to tell you Snappy, with Hari having his problems.

Posted by: jessibaby at August 28, 2009 9:28 AM

The large number of postings on the OT came from stimulating chats about trenchant ideas & deep philosphical musings, of course.
Among other topics discussed was why Rob was banned while Ghetto wasn't.

Posted by: Arkady at August 28, 2009 9:28 AM

Thank you Biff, I love Marilyn, I have a great Bert Stern print of her.

Thank you DIBS!

DH - its available online. And Curbed has linked it. Or you can just go down there and check it out for yourself! Take a chair though.

Posted by: dittoburg at August 28, 2009 9:28 AM

Btw, DIBS, it's too bad you couldn't make it over to Clover Club. In addition to the fact that bitter and beoch were anxious to meet you, I think you would have been very impressed with the young, Asian male tending bar.

Posted by: Biff Champion at August 28, 2009 9:29 AM

Oh, Jessi...sad news inded :( But, we'll have to get another Official PLUSA Pet. Perhaps we can name him Mini Swallow? :)

It was great fun meeting bitter retort and brighton B last night. Lucky I ran into DH on Smith. Biff, you may want to buy some milk thistle for the liver.

The bartender at Clover was adorable, though stingy with the gin. One could manage.

"Biff, is Clover Club an acceptable venue for the next meet up??? You've piqued my interest."

I'm certain it is more than just your interest that is piqued. Clover Club is a very nice place. Probably not enough space in the bar area, but it seemed there was a nice lounge area in the back, although I didn't get a good look at it.

Posted by: bitter retort at August 28, 2009 9:44 AM

biff, it was the teeny vessels. Her place on 19th, "flatiron lounge" has giant martinis. The g&ts were quite good though. After you left I "dipped" into the guy trying to pick up the girl. He could have used your coaching.

Posted by: DeLepp at August 28, 2009 9:44 AM

chicken, just let me warn you....don't let ghettoazz find out that you've paid for sex over there!!!!

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at August 28, 2009 9:44 AM

The bartenders at Clover Club are nice to look at but I don't recommend it for a meetup space. The front area isn't conducive to a big crowd and the backroom is seating only. No standing, like Angel Share or Little Branch. And they enforce it. Which is kind of silly but eh. There are other local bars in BoCoCa that are lots of fun. What about Brooklyn Inn? Or Abilene? Or MiniBar?

Posted by: CG_ups at August 28, 2009 9:45 AM

**Bring Back Robert on Fridays**

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at August 28, 2009 9:47 AM

Well in the interests of full disclosure, here are a few of Rob's comments from yesterday:

***

“3pm outside any school in nyc is liking being locked in a cage with a pack of wild animals.”

and…

“it's just that too many stupid people breed. it's disgusting. it's absolutely disgusting that people in nyc get benefits out the a$$ and paid to breed even more stupid people who breed. barf.”

and…

“it's just lame, the whole dynamic of housing prices and schools and parents and kids and everything. it's all LAME”

and….

“whatever. maybe one or two of them. but the majority are borderline retarded, violent, and dull.”

**

There were others. I guess they're not so bad individually, but he really went off. I think the final straw that for Mr. B's was Rib going out of his way to insult jscheff. Long story short he was acting like a jerk. I'm sure it pissed off Mr. B., the only umpire in this ballpark. But I don't imagine it's long-term. I think Rob needed a time out. I also think he needs to get laid. But I imagine Mr. B. will bring him back after a while. And he should be back - he's a funny guy.

Posted by: East New York at August 28, 2009 9:50 AM

Clover Club is fantastic. Space could be an issue if a lot of people show up. Another nearby favorite of mine is Brooklyn Inn.

Posted by: lechacal at August 28, 2009 9:50 AM

No, I am not ghetto. I like daveinbedstuy and my name is an homage to him.

Posted by: Sad sad little man at August 28, 2009 9:47 AM

Tell us more about yourself. Do you live in the ghetto and have you made bad financial decisions??? Have you ever paid for sex?? Are you male or female?? Or in between??? :)

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at August 28, 2009 9:50 AM

"Dirty, what time did you get home?"

3:30!!

Posted by: dirty_hipster at August 28, 2009 9:51 AM

"They dont let people stand?"

Correct. I tried doing it a couple of times and immediately the bartenders jumped out from behind the bar and bodyslammed me to the ground. They are very adamant about that rule.

Posted by: Biff Champion at August 28, 2009 9:51 AM

I think Rob needed a time out. I also think he needs to get laid. LOL

I think there are a few others here that need the latter as well.

Posted by: bitter retort at August 28, 2009 9:53 AM

ENY - This blog is unusual & laudable for not being particularly politically correct. Rob may've stepped near the line but others have gone further over it.

Posted by: Arkady at August 28, 2009 9:53 AM

"I also think he needs to get laid."

Yes, but with which sex!?

Posted by: cobblehiller at August 28, 2009 9:55 AM

"ENY - This blog is unusual & laudable for not being particularly politically correct. Rob may've stepped near the line but others have gone further over it."

I agree 100%. But, I repeat - Mr. B is the only umpire in this ballpark. If HE thinks Rob went over the line, he's going to ban Rob, as he did. Mr. B is the only one here with his hands on the controls. Rob got on his bad side, and paid the price.

Posted by: East New York at August 28, 2009 9:56 AM

Arkady, that's true and oftentimes I'm one of the biggest offenders but I only do it in the OT and that's where rob steps over the line, in almost all of the other threads. A good dust up in the HOTD usually at least sticks to real estate talk and calling names but rob has to learn that there are limits to the snarkiness in the other threads.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at August 28, 2009 9:57 AM

"Yes, but with which sex!?"

He's not fooling me. He's a homosexual male.

Posted by: East New York at August 28, 2009 9:57 AM

InsertSnappyNameHere, I come in peace. I am not angry and adore the regulars here.

daveinbedstuy, I live somewhere much worse than the ghetto. There are lots of old, decrepit townhouse type apartments that I believe people refer to as brownstones.

Everybody pays for sex, in one way or another.

Agreed.

Posted by: cobblehiller at August 28, 2009 9:59 AM

I think Rob's comments, while not polished, are one of the best things about this blog. I think, as THL wrote, Mr. B just doesn't "get him."

Randi banned made me spit coffee.

I am actually someone else's sockpuppet. Today Dave thought I got banned so I went ballistic. I sound like a crazy lady on the street. I am jealous of dave's sex life but that makes him a small man. He has paid for sex but no one will pay me for sex.

Now I want you to take my lunatic ranting seriously.

QED

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at August 27, 2009 7:06 PM

This is all you have Dave?

I would tell you to get back to work, but you don't work you post on brownstoner all day.

You should be banned Dave for engaging in illegal activity and then talking about it on this site. Mr. B's advertisers must be so happy to be supporting your childish and emotionally stunted life. HOnestly, I am surprised Mr. B hasn't had a word with you about cleaning up your act.

You can try to insult me all you want, but it just points to your pathetic little life.

Though I never liked Whuh or The What, they certainly had your number, Dave.

Get a life, Dave. One that doesn't require you to pay for peopel to be your "bf"

Sad sad little man,

Welcome!! Your PLUSA manual, tiara, and membership card are in the mail.

Please be advised that upon attending your first PLUSA gathering, you will be expected to buy the first round of shots. Identification of one or more PLUSAs will earn you extra credit.

Please send Snappy your membership dues by the 15th of the month, she gets cranky if you're late, and we stop sending the newsletter after two late payments.

Also, please advise your boss that s/he needs to lighten your workload so that you can keep up with posting regularly. Spotty posting is frowned upon!!

Best, Mgmt.

Cobble and Snappy, BIG HAPPY BDAYS!!!!!

I hated Clover Club, yuck!

Yesterday on the F train home (yeah I know dreaded F train) I heard THE BEST rendition of MJ's Billie Jean played by 2 Latinos (I think they were Mexican but not too sure). One played the melody on the guitar while the other imitated the lyrics (with high pitch MJ's voice) pattern on the violin. It was AWESOME! The whole cart clapped and pretty much everyone gave them money. They were by far the best musicians I've ever heard on the train or stations.

Posted by: cobblehiller at August 28, 2009 10:17 AM

I know I said it in yesterday's endless OT, but it's worth saying again: Snappy and Cobble, in the immortal words of Stevie Wonder, "Happy Birthday to you, happy birthday to you, happy birthday!"

Snappy, I hope you know once they've tasted pure tuna, there's no going back. Especially Hari. His uncle isn't called Piranha Boy for nothing, you know. He can consume an entire can, lick Charlie Tuna off the label, call it lunch, and look for more.

Posted by: Montrose Morris at August 28, 2009 10:17 AM

Yeeps. I was babbling a lot last night. Did I say anything weird to you guys at Clover Club? I can't remember what was real and what was my booze addled dreaming. I did have a dream about a kitten. I blame Snappy. ;)

Posted by: CG_ups at August 28, 2009 10:19 AM

ROFL! Thanks MM :)

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at August 28, 2009 10:19 AM

JB, if I was there that time, I would've stepped right in and gave your the usual line of "This is the alcohol speaking and is NO reflection of my boy DH who is a great guy whom you shouldn't hesitate to introduce to your friends". that said though, I might've laughed a few laughs before stepping in cause that sounds pretty funny exchange.

Posted by: more4less at August 28, 2009 10:20 AM

"Stevie Wonder, "Happy Birthday to you, happy birthday to you, happy birthday!""

Couldn't ask for better MM! Thank you! [I'm going to listen to that now!]

Posted by: cobblehiller at August 28, 2009 10:21 AM

"DH, 3:30?!! how do you do it man? I know you're young and everything but how do you do it"

I dunno - $12 cocktails get me rowdy.

Haha jessi - i'm glad you don't think I look like a guy with downs syndrome - and I loved your ferragamo bag!

CG...but kitten dreams are good dreams :)

**Bring Back Robert on Fridays**

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at August 28, 2009 10:21 AM

Yeah, MM. We had a Care for Kittens book when I was a kid & it said, "Never, ever give your cats people tuna" & made it sound as if something really lethal was in it. My mother happened to meet the author many years later & asked him why it was dangerous to feed them w/ the tuna & he said, "Because they'll never go back to cat food or they'll drive you crazy."

Happy Birthday cobble and snappy! Many happy returns.

Greetings from Nimes (where Levi Strauss found his magic fabric--hence it being called "de nimes"). I will have some spectacular real estate porn for you guys when I get back. Staying in a villa built by the Perrier family, as we are near the source of the Perrier spring. Anyway, happy Friday to all and talk to you guys next week.

man, sounds like a ton of you went to the clover club. would've came over too instead of trying to help neighbhor out with installing the digital converter and figuring out why they can only receive 4 spanish channels only. I was bummed DSK was off and now more bummed the event effectively moved to Clover.

hey Arkady, you got your TV working? did you have to get a new antenna? I think my neighbor needs a new antenna cause their old antenna aint cutting it

Perhaps Swallow wanted to give his life for Hari?

Congrats Snappy on finally winning! I did my best for you but certain others- who shall remain nameless- cared not and showed no sympathy whatever. I saw the epic battle between you and cobble. I am wondering if as legal counsel and cobble as PLUSA management that, perhaps there isn't a conflict of interest in winning the prize?

In which case, aforementioned prize should revert to.....ME!

Posted by: bxgrl at August 28, 2009 10:25 AM

Thank you everyone for the nickname suggestions. Any and all are fine, although I would prefer not to be called Slimey.

cobblehiller, thank you for my welcome package. I know I'm new and all and don't want to speak out of turn or rock the boat, but isn't there some sort of application package / enrollment process / initiation? Or do I get the manual, tiara and membership card for this prestigious club automatically?

I will read the manual cover to cover, but could you kindly direct me to the section that covers the minimum posting requirements so I don't jeopardize my new PLUSA status?

Posted by: lechacal at August 28, 2009 10:27 AM

M4L - Yes, I have to get an antenna. Have the name of a good one from a helpful vendor if you want but I'm still working out about a signal splitter for multiple t.v.s & how to snake the cables to all floors.
Antenna requirements are dependent on how far you are from towers, how high up you are & how many degrees separate the channels you want. There's a site for it if you want it.

Posted by: Arkady at August 28, 2009 10:28 AM

Snappy, I just sent you an email.

Posted by: cobblehiller at August 28, 2009 10:30 AM

Wasder, I wouldn't be too worried with g10. you're cool dude. your posts never come across over-bearing, unreasonable, insulting,... your posts are often a good & gentle reality-check - ie checking us on the loose & frequent use of dumb/sucker was appropriate. One thing about you is people might not always agree with your view pt but suspect most usually respect YOU.

Posted by: more4less at August 28, 2009 10:30 AM

lechecal - you missed even more. biff, dh and delepp are too much the gentleman to say anything but bitter and beoch are very attractive ladies too. that said, i'm scared of you. do you hang out at clover club often?

CG_Ups, I think you should ask the dude you were talking to all night. All we got was basically "hi" and "bye"!

Just teasing, you definitely didn't say anything weird - or weirder than usual. Thanks again for making it all the way over, despite the gimpy leg.
:-)

Posted by: Biff Champion at August 28, 2009 10:33 AM

Arkady, yeah give me the site. We live in a high rise so neighbor is basically restricted to a quality internal antenna - ie doubt bldg mgt will allow her to install external one on the roof

I didn't know if it was appropriate or not, but ditto to what CG_Ups said at 10:31. Our two newest female PLUSAs are quite the lookers.

Posted by: bitter retort at August 28, 2009 10:35 AM

I go to clover club a couple of times a month. The Mrs. and I alternate Friday nights out (one of us stays home with the kids and the other goes out) and on my Fridays out I usually hang out with a friend who lives around the corner. I have had many a ramos gin fizz (not on the menu) and many a corpse reviver (on the menu) at clover club. We generally hit Brooklyn Inn, clover club, maybe ceol or camp.

Lechacal, I missed the memo too and my son was sleeping over at the in-laws so I could've been there early (vs. my usual 9pm appearance) and my wife would've came along too.

Biff, I will vote against you on the next election if I miss another such memo. It's not your fault but as President, you get the blame when something goes wrong

Posted by: more4less at August 28, 2009 10:37 AM

ATTENTION ATTENTION FELLOW PLUSAs. I RECEIVED AN EMAIL FROM ROB TO RELAY THE MESSAGE TO ALL OF YOU!!!

quote:

could you relay the following for me in the OT?

1. sorry for referring to children as crotchfruit. ENY (or maybe denton?) claimed that in the past i specifically called posters' childrens that term. that is not the case. ive only used that term in the general sense referring to children. but if it offends people, sorry. from now on i'll just refer to the chirrun as organic crotchfruit.

2. i am none of the stupid ghostnics that have popped up, i don't do that. not my style, and i wouldn't be able to get away with it anyways, i'm pretty sure everyone would know it's me.

3. in regards to jscheff, i'm pretty sure the only thing i've ever said directly to him was that the one photo in that thread he posted was poor quality and you couldn't see what it was.

4. Mr. B needs to take a chill pill or something.

5. and yes, i do need to get laid.

6. snappy & cobble happy birthdays!!!!

Application? Uh, you did log in didn't you? Done.

As for posting minimums, you are of course expected to post as much as you can. We understand that some people have to work for a living and so this can get tricky. But once you carefully explain to your boss that your work load needs to accomodate posting, this shouldn't be a problem!! ; )

Clover Club is great but a little too genteel for us I think.

Posted by: infinitejester at August 28, 2009 10:39 AM

m4l, it was a lot more impromptu than you might think. It was basically beoch & bitter on the OT late yesterday saying they would be at Clover. Biff responded he was around there. I was actually eating about a mile away at Stan's Place on Atlantic and Biff phoned saying they were really a lot of fun but even I didn't make it over after 2 bottles of wine at Stan's.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at August 28, 2009 10:40 AM

Actually my mother in law was in town last night so I could have taken the Mrs. as well. I would say her interest in meeting the brownstoner crowd is probably about a 3 out of 10, but her interest in clover club cocktails is higher.

Posted by: lechacal at August 28, 2009 10:40 AM

M4L - Email Mike AT SolidSignal.com
F.Y.I. The indoor amplified antennas don't work well unless there's clear line of sight thru a window. Even leaves and tree branches interfere with the much less penetrating UHF transmission band. Also, if you're down a hill, you won't have line of sight. Thru masonry or concrete, the signal degrades by at least 60%. You can purchase a GE amplified digital antenna #TV24746 for about $30 and try it, but it too has to be mounted in the highest window in the house facing magnetic North. BTW, the compass pts often cited are based upon magnetic North, not true North; i.e. the curved face of the anntenna should point at 350 degrees from Magnetic North.

thanks. the antenna might work for her then. her apt windows are unobstructed (no trees, bldgs,...) and as I tried to claim unsuccessfully (thx Snark & g10) last time, Clinton Hill is highest elevation in downtown BK.

Posted by: more4less at August 28, 2009 10:46 AM

Biff, I was actually thinking of emailing you yesterday to see if you were out but then decided to say home. Had some co-op business nonsense to handle.

jessi, we are indeed single & str8 (that's for *rob*)

Posted by: bitter retort at August 28, 2009 10:46 AM

OK, my ego is not bruised. I was not deliberately not invited to an organized brownstoner event. I failed to pick up on an impromptu gathering.

For the record - don't care how attractive anyone is. As long as I'm going out drinking with strangers it's a little easier for them all to be guys, like our sausage-fest in Williamsburg last Thursday. I don't want to be coming home half in the bag telling my wife about how there were actually a couple of hot chicks there.

Posted by: bxgrl at August 28, 2009 11:04 AM

DH - My cocktail snobbery pretty much starts and stops with clover club. My manhattan drinking consists of the endless series of cocktail parties and clients drinks and recruiting dinners that get filtered through work.

bxgrl - No, I just have a policy of of not doing things that wouldn't be comfortable telling her about. I don't report every detail of every night I have ever had out, but just for example I wouldn't go to a strip club with friends (which happens on occasion) unless I was perfectly willing to say, when asked, that I had gone to a strip club. Of course it's fine to go out with the brownstoners if there are a couple of attractive ones there. But it's slightly easier - and the married guys can back me up here - if you can go home and report that it was a sausagefest.

Dave, I love watching soccer (futbol for non americans here). Let me know if you ever want to go to a game. We'll have to get tixs though.

The women's bball would be free. Oh well, I don't like it either but figured if enough PLUSAs wanted to go, I would go and pick up the tix from Santa's workshop. NEVER MIND!

I am waiting for hockey season to start. MSG seats are waiting for me ass to warm them.

Posted by: Kensingtonian at August 28, 2009 11:11 AM

M4L, complain to Lechacal, if you dare! LOL

**Bring Back Robert on Fridays**

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at August 28, 2009 11:11 AM

Lechacal, exactly. to pass a grilling by wife is a lot easier when you're telling the truth (ie f'ing hard to lie when a little buzzed and then to remember the lie the following morning when one has to pass another grilling but now head pounds a little too). key is rack up brownie pts for the break-out-of-jail outings where it's understood boys will be boys and no repercussions forthcoming.

you single lads taking notes. don't learn via mistakes. take it from the guys who already learned it the hard way (& paid the dues)

Posted by: more4less at August 28, 2009 11:11 AM

Well that strategy can backfire, lechacal. When I was living in Hong Kong I'd go to Bangkok almost every weekend with a straight friend of mine. We'd head off in different directions after dinner and a few past dinner drinks.

At one point his wife accused him of being gay because he went down there so often with me.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at August 28, 2009 11:12 AM

"I am waiting for hockey season to start."

NOW you're talking!!

Posted by: Biff Champion at August 28, 2009 11:13 AM

OK OK I'm not saying attractive people are unwelcome or that I am only interested in going to gatherings if it's just male brownstoners. sheesh.

Posted by: lechacal at August 28, 2009 11:13 AM

Snappy, if you didn't notice, I have the "HOT Head" imagine. you think I would be scared by the one with the "intimidating" look? besides, how can I complain to him when he got stiff'd too

Posted by: more4less at August 28, 2009 11:15 AM

Exactly M4L. You get what I'm saying. Life is just so much easier when you don't have to worry about remember versions of the truth. And let's be honest - no guy wants to go home and admit that he just spent the evening getting drunk with a bunch of hot chicks. Marriage really is an institution that can only be fully understood from the inside.

Posted by: lechacal at August 28, 2009 11:15 AM

Kens, I would be willing to brawl with anyone who dares to cut me off on the hockey hookup. that is one sport seeing LIVE is tons better than on TV

Posted by: more4less at August 28, 2009 11:17 AM

"At one point his wife accused him of being gay because he went down there so often with me."

Prior context is very important to a proper understanding of this sentence.

Posted by: lechacal at August 28, 2009 11:18 AM

Yeah, Lechacal, that's why I got out of mine - all that ugly viscera on the inside.

Posted by: Arkady at August 28, 2009 11:18 AM

Marriage:

When two people are under the influence of the most violent, most insane, most delusional and most transient of passions, they are required to swear that they will remain in that excited, abnormal and exhausting conditions continuously until death do them part.

Biffy, I always take my little brother with me to hockey games cause he is a die hard Rangers fan and hockey in general. If I ever get an extra ticket against Montreal or Toronto, it'll have your name on it.

Could we all post over on Curbed today?

Posted by: jessibaby at August 28, 2009 11:24 AM

WAIT! Today is not only historic and all-important because it's mine and Cobble's birthdays!

On this day in history:

From History.com

"On the steps of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C., the African American civil rights movement reaches its high-water mark when Martin Luther King, Jr., speaks to about 250,000 people attending the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom. The demonstrators--black and white, poor and rich--came together in the nation's capital to demand voting rights and equal opportunity for African Americans and to appeal for an end to racial segregation and discrimination.

The peaceful rally was the largest assembly for a redress of grievances that the capital had ever seen, and King was the last speaker. With the statue of Abraham Lincoln--the Great Emancipator--towering behind him, King used the rhetorical talents he had developed as a Baptist preacher to show how, as he put it, the "Negro is still not free." He told of the struggle ahead, stressing the importance of continued action and nonviolent protest. Coming to the end of his prepared text (which, like other speakers that day, he had limited to seven minutes), he was overwhelmed by the moment and launched into an improvised sermon.

He told the hushed crowd, "Go back to Mississippi, go back to Alabama, go back to South Carolina, go back to Georgia, go back to Louisiana, go back to the slums and ghettoes of our northern cities, knowing that somehow this situation can and will be changed. Let us not wallow in the valley of despair." Continuing, he began the refrain that made the speech one of the best known in U.S. history, second only to Lincoln's 1863 "Gettysburg Address":

"I have a dream," he boomed over the crowd stretching from the Lincoln Memorial to the Washington Monument, "that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: 'We hold these truths to be self-evident: that all men are created equal.' I have a dream that one day on the red hills of Georgia the sons of former slaves and the sons of former slaveowners will be able to sit down together at the table of brotherhood. I have a dream that one day even the state of Mississippi, a state sweltering with the heat of injustice, sweltering with the heat of oppression, will be transformed into an oasis of freedom and justice. I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character. I have a dream today."

King had used the "I have a dream" theme before, in a handful of stump speeches, but never with the force and effectiveness of that hot August day in Washington. He equated the civil rights movement with the highest and noblest ideals of the American tradition, allowing many to see for the first time the importance and urgency of racial equality. He ended his stirring, 16-minute speech with his vision of the fruit of racial harmony:

"When we allow freedom ring, when we let it ring from every village and every hamlet, from every state and every city, we will be able to speed up that day when all of God's children, black men and white men, Jews and Gentiles, Protestants and Catholics, will be able to join hands and sing in the words of the old Negro spiritual, 'Free at last! Free at last! Thank God Almighty, we are free at last!'"

they are so frustrating. used to get box seats via work and everyone would just get drunk because it was so depressing. stupid knicks. but i can't bring myself to get behind any other team. Patrick Ewing, you're always in my heart!

Kens, come on over! DH and I are hanging out in the One Hanson Place thread (a link from Brownstoner!)

Hi everyone. Sorry I missed Clover Club. I didn't see your last post, Bitter. After we hit 1000 I ran off to my two hour yoga class.

Yes, I passed up Brownstoner drinks for a yoga class.

I guess that makes me an EMP* PLUSA.

*Even More Pathetic

Posted by: WonTon at August 28, 2009 11:40 AM

OK so I just tried to get domain name PLUSA.com or PLUSA.net and make a website just for shits and giggles but BOTH are taken and beign offered at obsene amounts. Did any of you PLUSAs actually buy that domain name. I am left with MYPLUSA.com or THEPLUSA.com!!!!!! WTF!!!!!

Posted by: Kensingtonian at August 28, 2009 11:40 AM

CG_ups, I would love to see the knicks. I focus on the young players and day dream how they would work with King james. As bad as they are, I still watch, cheers then cry over them along with my pathetic Mets and Rangers (Kens, you have to agree they've underperformed big vs how good they look on paper entering season the last few seasons).

I occassion bust out some old taped games of the recent glory days of the knicks - ie the thug crew of Ewing, Oakley, Mason, Starks & anthony (almost forgot X man)

Posted by: more4less at August 28, 2009 11:41 AM

The box seats is what persuaded me...never had box seats to anything before.

Cobble, what does the PLUSA Manual say about PLUSAs spending time on other blogs?

Posted by: Biff Champion at August 28, 2009 11:42 AM

jessi, I don't feel like registering. I'll stick with Brownstoner plus I am off to home in an hour. Gotta go to parent's house and install a TV wall mount and run some cables in the kitchen so mom and dad can watch TV while hanging out in the kitchen.

Posted by: Kensingtonian at August 28, 2009 11:43 AM

Jon Starks is the man. I loved that punk. Glory days knicks. sigh. That was a great group, and don't forget Doc Rivers!

Bill Bradley, my second favorite knick of all time (after Patrick Ewing). Terrible public speaker (big handicap for a politican) but such an awesome dude.

Hey Dh:

What's your take on the comment the owner of Otte made in this article in Crains. True? Just bitter...?

WILLIAMSBURG—Trendy little boutique Otte has been holding a closing sale for a while, but it's about to get turned up a notch. Per the store: "In the next 2 weeks we will be clearing out our Brooklyn store completely and offering extreme deals on anything that's left! Currently nothing is over $80 and there are a lot of items in the $10-$20 range. We have select Commes Des Garcons wallets on sale, and Earnest Sewn and Current Elliot jeans for under $50." In an article in Crain's, Otte's owner was pretty blunt about leaving the 'Burg because nobody there has money anymore, so perhaps it's not a surprise that they've settled on Tribeca as their new home. Biff et al, According to the PLUSA Manual, chapters 35-37:

PLUSA members may post on other blogs, but only if they use their PLUSA login and are prevented from posting on Brownstoner.

Adam Carolla??

This is going from bad to worse!

I just looked at Curbed. That site blows. The only thread with any comments is the one from PLUSAs who went over to say hi to Rob. Pretty funny avatars and comments from jessi, Rob, et.al.

The What might get banned from two different blogs on two different days after he just insulted Curbed over there!

Posted by: Biff Champion at August 28, 2009 1:14 PM

You all need to see Lechacal's avatar on curbed! Too funny!

**Bring Back Robert on Fridays**

Yes, the What is going for a doubleheader on the banning thing!

**Bring Back Robert on Fridays**

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at August 28, 2009 1:16 PM

"The What

Happy Birthday ISNH and Cobblehiller! Maybe you can strip in front of a web cam!

Please post the URL, Thanks!

The What

Someday this war is gonna end..."

I don't know about you Snappy, but I have mixed feelings about those birthday wishes!

Well, actually, it's kind of in line with the 1-800-PLUSA-HO thing from the other day!

Posted by: cobblehiller at August 28, 2009 1:17 PM

I think robert on fridays still needs a bit of a time out. He's still posting the same stuff he did on the Sunset Park High School thread- and frankly, it was offensive and unnecessary. But I do think banning him for his photo comments was ridiculous.

Posted by: bxgrl at August 28, 2009 1:19 PM

LOL Cobble! And watch out with posting What's exact words...you may be next to get the axe from Mr. B!

**Bring Back Robert on Fridays**

lechacal- thought you were navy? Isn't that a Marine Sergeant avatar?

Posted by: bxgrl at August 28, 2009 1:23 PM

What has created his own blog! I won't post the link, but you can find it if you go to curbed.

**Bring Back Robert on Fridays**

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at August 28, 2009 1:24 PM

Yes, Curbed totally sucks. The comments are like teeny tiny and all the ads clutter up everything. Dave remarked once most blogs have formatting that really, really stinks; man is that ever true.

There's a reason why Brownstoner gets all the press. He earns it.

Posted by: infinitejester at August 28, 2009 1:24 PM

OMG, Biff does look a bit like Adam Gertler (though I wouldn't advertise that, Biff. I think AG is a bit of a tool.).

Posted by: brighton beoch at August 28, 2009 1:25 PM

Maybe all that's true but I bet Curbed gets to raise his ad rates after he's swamped w/ all the PLUSA input today.

Posted by: Arkady at August 28, 2009 1:26 PM

bxgrl - yeah, but that's just because snappy thought I was a Marine, and also because that is one of the best military characters in any film ever.

Posted by: lechacal at August 28, 2009 1:27 PM

"What has created his own blog!"

ROFL!! That's so great!

Posted by: cobblehiller at August 28, 2009 1:29 PM

"OMG, Biff does look a bit like Adam Gertler (though I wouldn't advertise that, Biff. I think AG is a bit of a tool.)."

I think I might have to reconsider my comment earlier regarding bitter and beoch.
"Our two newest female PLUSAs are quite the lookers."
Hmmm, maybe I can think of a different word that rhymes with "lookers". KIDDING!!

Posted by: Biff Champion at August 28, 2009 1:29 PM

bxgrl - He also did it 'cause marines hook more babes.

Posted by: Arkady at August 28, 2009 1:30 PM

I think 1-800-PLUSA-09 is funnier...it sounds like a real number.

Posted by: infinitejester at August 28, 2009 1:30 PM

Never thought I'd hear a Navy man say that about a Marine! :-)

I can't see the picture clearly- what movie?

Posted by: bxgrl at August 28, 2009 1:31 PM

"you may be next to get the axe from Mr. B!"

OMG!

Posted by: cobblehiller at August 28, 2009 1:31 PM

Biff, just to clarify, I remember AG from the FN - did not google pics now, which I gather are not flattering.

Posted by: brighton beoch at August 28, 2009 1:32 PM

OMG...I just looked over at Curbed. This stuff is really getting out of hand....and funny!!

I LOVE "The What"'s avatar! Snappy, yours is VERY cute, too! I LIKE it!

I need to do some work!

[back pedaling] What I meant to say was that you bear a startling resemblence to Hugh Jackman.

Posted by: brighton beoch at August 28, 2009 1:36 PM

Ok, beoch, you get a pass. And of course when I said "maybe I can think of a different word that rhymes with "lookers".", I was thinking of "cookers"!

I have lost all hope of doing any work today at The Death Star. One blog was enough to waste my whole day, now I have not one but THREE blogs open on my computer!

Posted by: Biff Champion at August 28, 2009 1:37 PM

My avatar is my inner child :) Mr. B needs to bring the ability to have avatars on this site. Just think how much quicker we could identify who is saying something just by seeing the little pic.

Posted by: CG_ups at August 28, 2009 1:57 PM

Full Metal jacket- you're right about the character. I thought the movie was totally disturbing and powerful and I honestly didn't know what to feel about it except to say we expect a hell of a lot from our soldiers and don't do nearly enough to help them. It was a brutal watch, though. Don't think I could see it again.

Posted by: bxgrl at August 28, 2009 2:24 PM

Bxgirl, I have a feeling (unconfirmed of course) that perhaps Jscheff and/or others complained about the statements against him or the pictures and Mr. B. got fed up and didn't want to deal with it while on vaca and just decided to boot em all out off frustration.

**Bring Back Robert on Fridays**

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at August 28, 2009 2:26 PM

Yeah, I agree w/ Snappy. Although they've said worse to Mr. B himself. Maybe he was just putting them on notice before he goes to Hawaii & they'll be allowed back on Monday - presumably more subdued (but that is unlikely - esp. given all the traffic on Curbed & What's new blog.)

NYC-Themed Hotel Opening in...NYC —

The Hotel Hell of West 40th Street is getting a whole lot weirder: HotelChatter has the details on the Distrikt Hotel opening in the fall, "with floors representing 10 different neighborhoods or districts beginning with a Central Park living wall in the lobby and renderings of Manhattan's grid around the elevators." Finally we can spend a night on the Upper East Side without having to go there. [HotelChatter via Real Deal]

Posted by: bxgrl at August 28, 2009 2:34 PM

I honestly think it's Mr. B's right to have the final say on who gets booted and why, but I really hope that Rob is simply on a time out and not permanently banned. That I wouldn't agree with at all. But, again, this is Mr. B's house and his toys we are playing with. True, without all of our clicks, the house and toys lose some value, but still. Our protesting may not do anything as he can't allow himself to be bullied by us and our desires. Argh...I just don't know.

Phew, WonTon. What a relief ;)

Posted by: jessibaby at August 28, 2009 3:22 PM

Biff, I had a blog on Blogspot for three years, Blogger itself has no IP tracking but if he installs a hit counter, then yes.

Posted by: infinitejester at August 28, 2009 3:22 PM

A friend of mine does a blogspot & can't get any info. Mind you, he's not terribly tech savvy.

Posted by: Arkady at August 28, 2009 3:23 PM

"Oh Crap. Biff, thanks alot for giving me an effing heart attack. YIKES!"

Snappy, for all his ranting, I wouldn't be too concerned about The What. I don't think he's really a nutjob. It was really more of a general question.

"Biff, we await your State of the Blog Union address."
Capital PLUSA, I'll (meaning Arkady) will put that together very soon.

Posted by: Biff Champion at August 28, 2009 3:24 PM

too late to worry now. you guys already posted there. can't be undone so chill.

Posted by: more4less at August 28, 2009 3:25 PM

Funniest thing about The What is how he never breaks character...I fell over laughing when I saw the "nametag" and his avatar on Curbed is hilarious. He actually takes the time to redo the whole persona!

Posted by: infinitejester at August 28, 2009 3:25 PM

Time for me to put up my foot and get my b'day celebration started (ie...cans of bud light and a movie!) See you all Monday :)

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at August 28, 2009 3:26 PM

Rob's email thru K @10:38 states:
1. sorry for referring to children as crotchfruit. ENY (or maybe denton?) claimed that in the past i specifically called posters' childrens that term. that is not the case. ive only used that term in the general sense referring to children. but if it offends people, sorry.

Yes, I claimed that. And you are lying. Proof is below.

Rob, you spew out so much sh*t that you can't keep track of it all. Below pls find your message to cmu on 6/12, in the bike thread. The reason I have this text is that I copied it and sent it to Mr. B in complaint. The only time I have ever done so.

""cmu. u are barking up the wrong tree. i grew up feral for the most part and took the bus to port authority from jersey to nyc from when i was 9 years old. (that would be the year 1986).

i do think it's lame when parents dump their kids on their bikes as fashion accessories and or political statements, which i see ALL the time in park slope. these same parents wont even let their kids eat peanuts.

beleive me dude, i grew up much more hardcore than you or your crotchfruit ever will."

Sound familiar? I find the term offensive. Stop using it. I agree what you said in the Carlton Mews thread was not up to the banning level, but you compensated for it elsewhere. I hope Mr. B lets you back when he comes back from vacation, but probably he doesn't need the aggravation meanwhile.

Who knows what this Schiff's guy relationship is to Mr. B. Could be closer than anyone knows.

I hope he brings back the What. At least he has a point of view and is funny most of the time.

Bye, Snappy. Have a great birthday!

Posted by: jessibaby at August 28, 2009 3:28 PM

I have a Blogspot blog and a counter and yes, you can. It's limited though. You'd have to match the specific post time to the address blah, blah, blah. It's not the simplest thing in the world.

Let's just say I got into a pretty vicious argument here and almost immediately after I had an "Annoymous Poster" who spewed vile comments at me on my blog for a little while. My husband the techie guy was able to figure it out and find out exactly who it was.

Posted by: TownhouseLady at August 28, 2009 3:29 PM

No Biff, haven't you been in the submarine tho?

BTW I was in the Museum of Natural History today, which I hadn't been in quite a while. What a zoo!

Posted by: denton at August 28, 2009 3:35 PM

THL, who was it? Anyone you knew?

Posted by: Capital PLUSA at August 28, 2009 3:37 PM

if he shows up at your work place, home,.., just bust out a smile and say "Hiya, WHAT brings you here on this lovely day?"

Posted by: more4less at August 28, 2009 3:37 PM

denton, I've been in a submarine, but not in NYC.

Museum of Natural History is one of The Champettes favourite places but I can imagine it's packed these days.

Posted by: Biff Champion at August 28, 2009 3:38 PM

me too - hi.infinitejester at gmail

saturday anyone interested in meeting up?

Posted by: infinitejester at August 28, 2009 3:39 PM

Interesting. If What figures out the name of my firm that's what he'll have, the name and the address. We don't have a website with any more than that.

At that point I'll actually be able to post for everyone what our investment performance is. I suspect we will then get inquiries to accept money.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at August 28, 2009 3:41 PM

I'd never tell but yes, I knew who it was.

Posted by: TownhouseLady at August 28, 2009 3:41 PM

I went on a date. I blogged about how rude she was. I noticed someone had searched for my name and found my blog from the place where she told me her friend worked. She emailed me to go out again, saying she'd not do the rude thing she did before.

Posted by: infinitejester at August 28, 2009 3:43 PM

Biff, are the Champette's boys or girl's and what age range? Just asking because I was considering taking my goddaughter there and I didn't know if it'd interest her (as much as it does me).

Posted by: TownhouseLady at August 28, 2009 3:45 PM

THL, the better question is whether you'll whoop ass when you do come face to face with the person. btw, I put my $$$ on you in a throw-down

Posted by: more4less at August 28, 2009 3:45 PM

beoch, I'm going out tonight in East Village and not available until later. Are you expecting a late night or do you think you two will pack it in more on the early side?

Posted by: Biff Champion at August 28, 2009 3:45 PM

I asked Mr. B at Rope & he said he can't track info.

Posted by: Arkady at August 28, 2009 3:47 PM

THL, how old is your goddaughter? I find kids of all ages love that museum.

Posted by: Biff Champion at August 28, 2009 3:49 PM

Posted by: more4less at August 28, 2009 3:49 PM

jester, re: tomorrow. It's possible. I am waiting to hear from a couple of people. Email me either way about your plans tomorrow.

Posted by: Biff Champion at August 28, 2009 3:56 PM

Electonric trace evidence is everywhere (hey I see enough TV shows to know that) so it's a matter of does someone have the skillz and/or the desire to track & trace.

Posted by: more4less at August 28, 2009 3:56 PM

Have you all been following the State of New Jersey's plight to keep Muammar Qaddafi from inhabiting his own house when he's at the UN??

Qaddafi actually wants to pitch a tent on the property while he's here because he always lives in a tent when he travels.

Of course it's all about the Lockerbie bomber's release.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at August 28, 2009 3:56 PM

Bravenet hit counters are free and easily added to the HTML source code in blogs. They show "referrals" from the website which the pageviewer clicked to get to your site. You can resolve the data to show either IP addresses or the names of the networks.

Posted by: infinitejester at August 28, 2009 3:56 PM

Biff, she's 7.

Regarding the tracking. It honestly wasn't the simplest thing to do. He worked on it for a little while and I never would just ask him to do it for the heck of it. That's ridiculous. This was an extenuating circumstances situation. I had a suspicion who t was and he was able to confirm it for me.

Mr. B has the IP's so yes, he could if he really determined to do so but, I suppose he's got bigger fish to fry.

Posted by: TownhouseLady at August 28, 2009 3:56 PM

Posted by: brighton beoch at August 28, 2009 3:57 PM

Posted by: Biff Champion at August 28, 2009 3:59 PM

Biff, I am celebrating a bit so am going out no matter what. I promise you that email my good man!

Posted by: infinitejester at August 28, 2009 4:00 PM

Thanks Biff!!

She's getting to that 'I'm SO cool' stage and anything that's not Hannah Montana glittery and sparkly seems to fall flat with her jaded little 7 year old heart.

You're right though, a giant dinasaur could so totally kick Hannah's butt.

Posted by: TownhouseLady at August 28, 2009 4:02 PM

THL, also remember to go to the lowest level where they have the giant whale suspended from the ceiling. That's another "WOW"-inducing sight for sure. Even for the most jaded 7 year old Hannah Montana fan.

Posted by: Biff Champion at August 28, 2009 4:05 PM

The whale!! That's right. He has major wow factor indeed!

Posted by: TownhouseLady at August 28, 2009 4:08 PM

"You're right though, a giant dinasaur could so totally kick Hannah's butt."

Don't let Rob hear you say that.

Posted by: East New York at August 28, 2009 4:08 PM

Biff, give some credit to the giant Octopus too. or am I thinking of something else with a whale and octopus?

Posted by: more4less at August 28, 2009 4:08 PM

Biff, get this. My friend's sister is looking to move to BK Heights and she heard that it wasn't safe north of Orange Street.

Posted by: jessibaby at August 28, 2009 4:09 PM

M4L, you're right. There is a display on the lower level with a giant squid battling another sea creature (forgot what it is though)

Posted by: Biff Champion at August 28, 2009 4:11 PM

JB, everyone knows the Fruity streets are iffy - some are sweet and some are sour

Posted by: more4less at August 28, 2009 4:14 PM

jessi, where the heck is she from, Antarctica? Unless she is considering the Bronx as north of Orange Street.

Arkady, good call. THL, take her to the Hall of Gems and Minerals (called something like that). A bit off the beaten path. There is also a beautiful sitting area in the Japanese section with a koi pond. The Champettes like it there too.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at August 28, 2009 4:25 PM

Am Girl is incredibly expensive & sometimes you have to book for it. It's mega-depressing for adults - awful Disney-fied supposed culture but really a BeanyBaby consumption thing.

Posted by: Arkady at August 28, 2009 4:25 PM

good point arkady. ok, i will chicken and waffle myself one night next week.

m4l, restaurants always want you to come in anyway. oh we'll squeeze you in somewhere crap, then make you wait 2 hours for a table hoping you'll just stick around.

10 minutes to departure time. to this week : kiss my a**!

Posted by: CG_ups at August 28, 2009 4:35 PM

Posted by: CG_ups at August 28, 2009 4:36 PM

" then make you wait 2 hours for a table hoping you'll just stick around."

sounds like every visit to Diner/Marlow I've ever had.

Posted by: dirty_hipster at August 28, 2009 4:38 PM

CG_ups, true true on what they say. I usually pay attention to people's tone and for any hesitation. call them about something else (ie store hours) then hit them with the crowd size. if the person hesitates, then the answer is probably a lie. but if next wk is an option, that works too cause more people are off that week than this week.

Posted by: more4less at August 28, 2009 4:41 PM
