I saw a interview with Robert Shiller this morning on marketwatch.com. Still there, I believe. Basically he THINKS the drop in housing is over but he's full of so many caveats you can argue either way.
But what I learned is that he or someone has developed a couple of 3x leveraged funds that follow the CS index. One, for Team Bear. One for Team Bull. Details at macroshares.com, symbols UMM and DMM. Yeah, they're are all kinds of issues with leveraged ETFs, so read the prospectus.
What, BHO, Miss Muffet, you have a great chance to make some serious money on the further collapse of the CS index. When you do, don't thank me, a discreet envelope full of cash would be fine.

I wonder what cologne Robert Shiller wears.

All of you Team Bear members that hang your hat on every word from Roubini better wise-up....
Applying Roubini Wisdom to Stocks Means Missing Out
Aug. 26 (Bloomberg) -- Making money on the thinking of
Nouriel Roubini isn’t what it used to be.
The New York University professor, who in 2006 foretold the worst financial unraveling since the Great Depression, has yet to say the economy is worth investing in again. “There is a big risk of a double-dip recession,” wrote Roubini, also known as Dr. Doom, in his column in the Financial Times this week.
Anyone attempting to apply Roubini’s wisdom to stocks may be forgiven for missing the biggest rally since the 1930s as the Standard & Poor’s 500 Index climbed 52 percent in six months.
While Roubini said in March the advance was a “dead-cat
bounce,” that it may “fizzle” in May and warned in July that
the economy’s “not out of the woods,” the MSCI World Index was posting a 58 percent gain, the largest since it began in 1970.
“We’re looking at a bull cycle in phase one,” Laszlo
Birinyi said in a telephone interview yesterday. Birinyi was the top-ranked Dow Jones Industrial Average forecaster for most of the 1990s on PBS’s “Wall Street Week with Louis Rukeyser.” “No one wants to come out and say, ‘This is a bull market.’ Everyone’s just dancing around the term,” he said.
The S&P 500 added 14 percent since Westport, Connecticut- based Birinyi Associates Inc., which manages $350 million, said on May 20 that a bull market had begun, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. Roubini, who forecast in October 2008 that the U.S. was in a recession that would last 24 months, said on March 9 that the index might fall back to 600. It has risen to 1,028 since then.
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at August 26, 2009 9:21 AM
Yeah, Roubini and Prechter are like the proverbial stopped clocks...
Roubini has at least had the decency to say that there will be no 'collapse'. Not November either.

Has everyone heard about the blogger who called that model a skank so the model took the annonymous blogger to court and she was forced to reveal her identity?

well I was thinking, hasn't WHAT said enough to Dave to warrant a law suit? Or are we better off not knowing his true identity?

So Get this
Am walking to work today on 56th street and I pass a homeless man who is in his late 50's wearing Tevas, clean shirt and jeans and is busy typing away on his MAC!, um wha????
he had a little cardboard sign that said please help, I am homeless....

Randi...I saw that and wondered what kind of fallout there will be about anonymous postings on the web. This should turn into an interesting battle.

With a $352 MM jackpot you'll only receive about $125 MM, rob. That doesn't go far in buying entire blocks in NYC and building a giant Fedders monument.

I'd agree that driving with a PLUSA in the car is far more distracting than texting or making a cellphone call. Perhaps we need to speak to the Governor? :-)
Cobble, the official legal stance on this matter is that we may be in trouble...they came first! But, we can argue that we are in different fields of business and there would be no overlap and therefore no confusion to the public. But we need funds to fight this! PLUSA dues are late! DIBS, isn't the gen'l rule to div by 4 is what one expects to collect post paying off the taxes? so 352 becomes 176 after present-value which then becomes 88 after paying taxes

125 MM is still good. how many houses are on a typical block? 10-12? id just pick a block with houses less than a million dollars and raze that whole block. plus with coney island obliterated, Neverland Valley Brooklyn would be a destination fer sure!

Posted by: gemini10 at August 26, 2009 10:05 AM
Rough calculation m4l & chicken...First you discount back to the present value and then you get about 50% of that after taxes are paid.
It'd be enough for me to spread around to all my "friends with benefits" and start a new fund as well as buy a few Duesenbergs and a few places in brooklyn to rehab to keep me busy.

bxgrl, I disagree with her implication that there should be no anonymity on the Internet and people who don't want to disclose their identities are often cowardly. That's total BS. Of course, I'm assuming that is her stance as I don't feel she was very effective in expressing it.

HR, you'll never lose weight reading, no matter how many mags you read. Trust me I know :-)
Pretty easy, if you burn more calories than you take in you lose weight. If you take in more than you burn, you gain weight. So you need to watch what you eat and start some kind of exercise regimen, walking, running, gym, all of the above.

HR, I did the fat flush diet about 4 years ago and lost 18 pounds in 3 weeks. I kept that off for 3 years. Lots of fiber(psyillium every morning/night) and no booze. No alcohol is the key. Otherwise pretty easy diet. No dairy, refined sugars, tomatoes or potatoes. Lean beef, chicken, fish, lamb were all allowed.

"Anyone have any suggestions.."
HOBO, a good way to start is with portion control. Obviously try to eat healthier and cut down on the fatty, high calorie stuff, but if and when you eat it, just try to eat less. Stop yourself before you finish everything and give your stomach a chance to tell you're brain you're full. I think it takes something like 20 minutes for your brain to receive the signal. I have an awful metabolism and love food (deadly combo) and have battled weight gain forever. It's tough. Good luck!

If you've ever been the target of a whispering campaign you'd know. Anonymity is a great thing, anonymity without responsibility isn't.

I was reallllly chubbo as a teen, but when I was 18 I decided I didn't want to be fat as an adult and I just watched what I ate and walked on the track to drop the first 20 pounds and then I really kicked it into gear and joined a gym and ate way more veggies and fiber.
You have to choose foods that are filling and nutricious.
have a bowl of oatmeal with some walnuts and some blueberries for breakfast, eat a yogurt for snack with an apple, have a solid lunch like a turkey sanwich on WW bread with mustard and a veggie soup(non cream based). sure you can have 2 cookies or a granola bar for that 3pm snack time and then have a dinner with salmon or chicken or WW pasta with tomato sauce with a salad, followed by low cal pudding - it's totally doable - you should be sticking to a 2000 calorie diet b/c of your size.

bxgrl, I disagree with the scope of it, which is why I would have liked to hear her elaborate on her opinion. I disagree with the judges ruling in that particular case, based on the limited info I have, but do believe serious, repeated threats by an anonymous poster should be subject to prosecution. In this case, while not very nice, the comments were hardly falling into the "damaging people's lives" category. If they did, then at least half of us posters here could be subject to fines and prosecution. Almost all of us have said much worse at one time or another.

I did weight watchers online about 2 years ago...that really does work if you stick with it. It really helps you learn and internalize portion control. At first, you think...argh...only x amount of whatever isn't enough...then after you eat it you realize you are full and then get the picture that you were overeating all this time. It sounds so simple, but it really takes something like that for some folks to see it.

Not to brag but here's what I ate last night (Mexican bf not included):
A salad of fresh tomatoes (brought back over the weekend from PA) with feta cheese , balsamic vinegar & olive oil.
Lasgne from Fresco On the Go that I bought at lunch when I had my meatball sandwich.
Maybe 3 scoops of Hagen Dazs vanilla with a good squeeze of hershey's syrup.
Later a half peanut butter sandwich, Wise potato chips and a glass of milk.
I have no idea what the total caloric intake was but I suspect the Hershey's Syrup was the worst thing I consumed.

Hoboken, I would actually love to be 6 feet and be around 210-215lbs but mostly muscle weight. I would suggest to start working out and turning that mass into muscle.
I am 6"0 and 186lbs now and started going back to the gym again. When I used to train and had a hard core routine worked out, I was 193ish at my prime and looked great. Then grad school, full-time job, and drinking with PLUSAs pushed me into the stage that I am now. Working on changing that again and getting into prime shape.

G10, the X6 is really a POS. It couldn't do what it does if everything and anything wasn't computer controlled. It's a pig on top of everything else. The X5 is a truck. The X3 is a smaller truck even if it is built on a car platform.
I'd love to have the last generation M3 convertible. But I can't as my wife explained. TOO HARD to get the godammed dog in the back seat!!! So I'm not allowed to own any kind of coupe.
Not feeling any car with a V8 in it (like new M3/S4), as I believe we'll be seeing much higher oil prices sooner rather than later.

Biff- I agree with what you're saying except on this case. Only because the model was attacked using her real name. We do say a lot of stuff on B'stoner- name calling, etc. But we're doing it with user names. Very few of us use our real names here- the blogger went after the model personally and in such a way as to try to damage her. I think its a matter of degree. I was livid when that woman got off scott free after using a fake facebook account to cause a young girl to commit suicide. Somehow we are going to draw a line so that the freedom of the internet and privacy are protected, but it can't be used as a destructive weapon either. Don't know how we're going to do that.

I actually like trucks, even the smaller ones. I hate german engineered cars in general unless they are pre 1990s. Japanese kicked their ass long time ago in car production.
I used to love older M3s, drove plenty of them but they all have front differential problems. They keep on going from the fast driving and heavy engine. They might have fixed that problem in the newer ones.

hot tea in the early morning
granola and oj for breakfast
coffee from Starbucks
one of those Soba spinach noodles packages you get from Union Market
coffee from 7-11
salmon, fried potatoes, and beets for dinner w/ a glass of milk
Posted by: infinitejester at August 26, 2009 10:43 AM
That's how long they used to be open for before the Mutant Asset Bubble and everyone wanting 24/7.
I hope you know that 7-11 is owned by a Japanese company. it was originally started in texas and they gave the Japanes a franchise. The US firm went bankrupt in the early 90s and the Japanese bought the company. A few years ago they merged with Ito-Yoyado and the company is now called Seven & I holdings (3382)

HOBO: I have lost 35 pounds since December 2008. I was sitting at my desk at 3 am one day, eating Seamless Web takeout, and probably about to go to the snack room for a sugar high, and just decided to make a change. I stopped staying late (for the most part), stopped taking on more work than I should, started eating better and started exercising very regularly. I lost all of the weight before Aprilish. I had a spreadsheet that tracked all calories that went into my body and all calories that I expended (based on basal rate plus whatever I burned at the gym). At the end of the day there was a balance sheet showing net calories burned. 3500 calories equals a pound. So I probably won't make partner, but I won't have a heart attack when I'm 45.

Gem, BMW is a good ride BUT too many electrical problems. I never driven one that didn't have problems with it, NEVER. I heard a lot of people complained. I worked valet for almost four years in college and needless to say, driven over 1,000 cars easily, some for very short times but enough to feel the car. I even drove an ambulance once and an old style caddy hurst. That was a little freaky but the guy showed up on one who was a restuarant guest so I had to park it (there were no dead bodies in the back at that time).

Gem, its not about winning. I had some GOOD times on M5s and 540s on a stick. They hold the road really well and fun as hell to drive. I just wouldn't own one because of the headaches that seems to come along with it. I have a Japanese made SUV now for the past 4 years and couldn't be happier. Kensingtonian, I was about 195 last year with decent muscle mass.. I would love to get their again.. But easier said than done. I started counting calories at the beginning of the summer and went from 222 to 217 within about 3 weeks. Not bad. But then I started BBQ'ing on my terrace and went back to the bad habits.. But I am going off the soda, juices and all sweets.. That is my first step.. I have been walking an hour a night and now that my son is going back to class I will try to walk in the mornings as well.

Posted by: HOBOKENROCKS at August 26, 2009 11:18 AM
Hoboken, sounds like a good plan. You might cut quite a bit just by cutting soda, juices and sweets. Also a good way to get some exercise is while it's nice outside, play some sports with your kid. Not sure how old he is but I am sure you can think of something to play with him, no matter what the age is (my guess is that since he is in class as you stated, he can walk and run).

HOBO: To lose 25 pounds you need to burn 87,500 more calories than you consume. Over two months (let's say 61 days), that's 1,400 calories a day. Over three months (let's say 92 days) that's 951 calories a day. Either way, that is A LOT. You don't want to starve your body, because then your body will lower its metabolism and become more efficient at using calories - it will fight you. Shoot for something like 500 calories a day. Keep your body happy, don't starve it. Eat small amounts frequently to avoid blood sugar spikes. It takes a while, but once you are on a roll suddenly a few months go by and you have made real progress.

Posted by: HOBOKENROCKS at August 26, 2009 11:30 AM
Why am I killing you? I'm just telling you what it takes to lose weight. There are about a thousand lose weight quick with no effort ideas out there, but all of them basically suck or flat out don't work. There is no such thing as a realistic plan for quick weight loss that has any prospect of long-term success. 25 pounds in 2 or 3 months is too quick. Trust me.

"Phone-a-PLUSA options"
Those are great, Biff.
cobble, we need to add a "Lifeline" new chapter to the PLUSA Manual.
Posted by: CarrollGardened at August 26, 2009 11:34 AM
CG_ups, there's a new bar (and restaurant?) opening on Henry, just south of Atlantic, in one of the buildings adjacent to the Shell station. It's in the old C&G Television location. They've been doing the build-out forever. I'm guessing the liquor license is the hold-up. Will keep my eyes open for you.
Posted by: CarrollGardened at August 26, 2009 11:36 AM
C Gar- Cobble and I already added a LifeStyles section. I believe we can put biff's list in there?

CG_ups, :D I'll email you. Crazed today because I'm going to be on vacation for the next 12 days. Already in PLUSA withdrawal, which is truly pathetic, and, thus, I've come full circle.
bxgrl, a word? I hope I don't get any reports of your infidelity whilst I'm away.
Posted by: CarrollGardened at August 26, 2009 11:43 AM
Morning everyone!
Hobo, I've done Weight Watchers in the past. Very simple to follow and it really works. You can also track everything online which makes it very simple to use while at work, etc.
It basically let's you know what your intake should be based upon your size. It also gives you the skinny on how good or bad any particular food item is (they even list most fast food and chain restaurants) so you can make the choices yourself. Nothing's restricted but you'll want to make better choices so you can have more.
Posted by: TownhouseLady at August 26, 2009 11:46 AM
C Gar- would I do that to you? No! Our virtual marriage is virtually sacred to me :-) And have a great vacation! When you get back want to go to the Brooklyn Bridge Flea? MM and I want to.
Posted by: bxgrl at August 26, 2009 11:49 AM
HOBO - Got it. By the way, do you speak with a lisp in French?
Posted by: lechacal at August 26, 2009 11:49 AM
Tlady I don't know if I am ready to try WW.. But if my current plan doesn't work than I will have to do WW... I am not too overweight but I felt much better at 195-200 than I do at 220.. I have had friends that used WW and they have also spoken highly of them...
Posted by: HOBOKENROCKS at August 26, 2009 11:50 AM
Hobo- I recently ventured over to Carlo's Bake Shop (Cake Boss) and MmmmmmMMmmmm...those cannoli! Seriously, they were almost as good as Villabate in Bensonhurst. They also have awsome Pignoli tarts and Sfogliatella.
I was in heaven.
Posted by: TownhouseLady at August 26, 2009 11:51 AM
"Biff - I like the list!!! But I think I have to pick the phone a friend person ahead of time. :)"
If you have to pick one, pick DIBS. He would be my choice hands-down for the PLUSA with the deepest and most broad knowledge on the widest variety of topics.
"BTW you left yourself off the list. Any suggestions for Biff's area of expertise?"
Hmmmm, I think I would be very strong in Beatles and '80s music.
Posted by: Biff Champion at August 26, 2009 11:51 AM
bxgrl, would love to check out the Flea, if only to hang with you and MM! No doubt I'm sufficiently pathetic to check in over vacation (I mean, if Wasder can check in from the south of France and Biff from Canada . . . ), so I'll be watching.

I HATE MY MICROWAVE!
Sorry, just had to shout that for a quick second. I'm afraid to put it out for trash because heaven knows the DOS will find some reason to refuse to take it and then fine me. Sigh.
Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at August 26, 2009 11:52 AM
No .. Why?
Posted by: HOBOKENROCKS at August 26, 2009 11:53 AM
Biff, we all know that without the Beatles, there never would have been any '80s music.
And thank you for the compliment.
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at August 26, 2009 11:54 AM
It's interesting that, after giving HOBO weight loss advice, I then went out to grab a buffalo chicken wrap (with breaded chicken), smothered in blue cheese dressing, with another big side of blue cheese dressing for dipping and a bag of chips and bottle of soda. Of course this will all be followed up by another dinner out and copious amounts of alcohol tonight.
Do what I say and not what I do! :-)
Posted by: Biff Champion at August 26, 2009 11:55 AM
Tlady that place is addictive.. Be careful. He is part of the reason why I gained so much weight...
Posted by: HOBOKENROCKS at August 26, 2009 11:56 AM
But Biff, don't you bike or walk across the bridge almost daily? That's good exercise.
Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at August 26, 2009 11:57 AM
Oh Snappy, You're a little too late. A year before we moved we bought a really nice stainless countertop microwave.
When we got the house we needed to get the over the stove one (the existing cabinets which were all really nice custom were already built to house one).
We couldn't give the old one away to anyone! No one would take it. Finally I listed it as a free item and the person who wanted it never showed up to get it. That was the last straw. I put it out on the curb on garbage night with a note that said, "I'm only 1 year old and work like a dream but I just don't fit in the house."
I have no idea if the garbage men or a person needing it took it.

THL, dammit! I rarely use my microwave (I leave it unplugged!) and the damned thing is working my nerves. I've had it for like 13 years so I suppose that's all one can expect to get out of it. When I toss it I likely won't bother to replace it. I use it maybe 1-2 times per month if that. If I weren't too afraid of further foot pain, I'd kick that SOB down the steps tonight!
Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at August 26, 2009 12:02 PM
"if Wasder can check in from the south of France and Biff from Canada . . ."
True, but I only posted one comment over a one week period. That was an incredible show of willpower for the PLUSA President!
DIBS, no problem, I meant it. I'm constantly amazed by how you can speak intelligently on almost any topic raised on the blog (despite what a few of your detractors might say).
Posted by: Biff Champion at August 26, 2009 12:04 PM
When you're gainfully employed again I'd say get one. They're so inexpensive these days that you really can get a great deal when they're on sale at a Walmart or other such store. The only time you'll need one is when you don't have one. It's Murphy's Law.

Dave, how's the weather in Thailand in March? Are you going to make a list for us of what to "see" and where to eat?
Posted by: Kensingtonian at August 26, 2009 12:20 PM
Sorry to go off topic, whatever 'topic' may be, given there are hundreds of posts already and I can't possibly slog through them...
I'm having trouble focusing on anything else. My heart broke a little bit at Kennedy's passing just before this major health care bill he helped to craft, and a cause for which he battled fiercely throughout his career, comes for vote. (Reminds me a bit of the timing of Tim Russert's death last year). The irony is painful.
But I do hope the loss of his vote, and the difficulty of his quick replacement, will push the Dems to make use of the budget reconciliation process to approve a bill with a simple majority - and that they use that margin to craft a stronger bill.

He wasn't perfect, and who is, but he leaves behind a legacy of fine public service that most of the young,(and older) arrogant pups now in the Senate and Congress can never match. He could have been sitting in his compound enjoying the privileges of wealth and class, but chose public service instead, working with colleagues on both sides of the aisle, while never compromising his liberal philosophies. Even his enemies admired him. He will be very much missed.

Ay ya, Bangkok in March is really, really hot (April is the hottest month, monsoon starts in May)! The best time to be there is roughly from end of November to end of February.
How hot is Bangkok? Think of the hottest most humid day you've ever been in Washington DC. Then multiply by three.

M4L, I just did a quick search on NYT for coops and condos in the main areas Bstoner usually reps for COTD and came back with 1,999 hits. Obviously there is something out there to post! I still ask, what gives?
Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at August 26, 2009 1:35 PM
Actually WonTon, I always found Bangkok to be less humid than Hong Kong, even though the air temp might have been higher. You could actually eat outside in the evning in Bangkok during the Summer months whereas HK would be way too humid.
Chang Mai in January...sweaters needed!!!!!
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at August 26, 2009 1:37 PM
Biff, rayuela was the name of the place I wanted to recommend to you yesterday, but I couldn't remember the name. I went there with a group of friends for my birthday last year. Did you eat there, too? We thought the food was really good. And then we went to a bunch of different bars on the LES, though I remember none of the names, only that they were packed and we got carded everywhere we went, which hadn't happened in quite a while.

"there's really only so much stuff one can fill their brain with, but yeah i didnt know who he was. im sure i know lots of things that everyone SHOULD know that dont either, so it all evens out."
Sherlock Holmes famously didn't know the Earth traveled around the Sun, and said when Watson told him so, that he would promptly forget it. "A man's brain originally is like an empty attic, and you have to stock it with such furniture as you choose."
He can, however, identify 1,000 different varieties of tobacco remains.

Good luck with the move, Gem. It sounds like everything from the sale to the move is going very efficiently.
Biff, never been to Pearl but I love Marys and I hear they're practically the same. Last week, we wanted to go to Mary's but it was too late to get in, so we went to Aquagrille, where I haven't been in years because I can't afford it. It was so unbelievably good. Even the oysters were delicious even though it was 90 degrees out. I am still in a state of bliss just thinking about it. Now I want to go there every week, ha!

"ENY, they lost last night. this long days off is going to mess Joba up"
You gotta lose SOME time, M4L. That's what six-game leads are for.
I don't see this team going on any extended losing streaks w/CC at the head of the staff and the Yanks living up to the "Bronx Bombers" name. The season is not over, but I'm not sweating it, either.
"I truly hope they don't blow their lead this year - especially to Boston!"
Keep the faith, CarGar. It's gonna be OK. NO negative thoughts!!

Kens,
just so we're clear, prague activities would be the same as those in Thailand - except less gender confusion risk
Posted by: more4less at August 26, 2009 12:52 PM
M4L, those activities are WAY more expensive in Prague than in Thailand.
Posted by: Kensingtonian at August 26, 2009 1:54 PM
Yummy. DeLepp, I'm going to have to go back there to try the food. I had a look at the menu and it had a number of interesting sounding dishes. The cocktails were quite inventive and tasty as well.

There's very little chance of gender confusion in bangkok. You really need to seek it out. The bar patrons don't want that issue.
What are the prices in Prague???
In Bangkok it is anywhere from $4-7 to the bar as an "off fee." Then you tip them anywhere from $50-100.

"Noki, I miss Ted Kennedy already. He will be very much missed."
I'm with you ladies, I cried as I watched the very sad news this morning. Listening to comments on CNN and WNYC.
Posted by: cobblehiller at August 26, 2009 2:05 PM
Noki- I lift a glass to Ted Kennedy too. I can barely deal with it- it really is the end of an era. The Kennedys were a magnificent, flawed and tragic family but no one could ever say they left no mark.

Hey Biff, sorry for the delay. Pearl Oyster Bar is great. Foodwise it is very similar to Mary's Fish Camp. I think Pearl is a little more ambient for a night out or date while Mary's is a little more Cape Cod beach shack vibe. Personally, I like Mary's a tiny bit more because of the lobster pot pie during the winter, and the killer spicy shrimp tacos. Both have outstanding fried oysters/clams and amazing lobster rolls. You can't go wrong with a meal at Pearl but be prepared for a killer wait. Both have lines out the wazoo before they even open.

Speaking of restaurants, I need a rec for a place to go w/my cousins this weekend. One will be here from Montreal, the other from London. They are both in their 50s (they are older cousins : )), but hip (that may have come out wrong - do not mean to say that ppl in their 50s aren't generally hip). And no, Biff, I am not Canadian.
I generally refuse to go above 14th St on weekends, so downtown recs especially welcome.

Snake penises are even weirder. All snakes have at least 2 - called hemipenies. Venomous snakes have 4 (2 pairs). If they get startled "in the act", they leave one inside the female & scurry off. They're built like pneumatic gloves - lying inside their length & then fluid fills between 2 layers to tumesce. Some of the m are gorgeous - looking like coral necklaces or crystal acorns. King snakes can have them 8 feet long!
Posted by: Arkady at August 26, 2009 2:14 PM
It would seem that a lap dance in Prague is 4-5X more expensive than NYC. WTF??????????
I'm sure the hotels in Bangkok are much nicer than in Prague and cheaper too.

Oooh, I like Hearth. Good suggestion. Public, Peasant and Apiary are good too. I'm a sucker for Lure Fishbar, such good fried rock shrimp and the BEST new england clam chowder in the city. mmmm good. Mercer Kitchen is across the street from Lure and also good.
It sucks to be poor. I never get to go to restaurants any more. Maybe I should work at a restaurant so I can score some free meals.
Posted by: CG_ups at August 26, 2009 2:18 PM
Arkady, you seem to know a lot about penises. You were the only one that really knew Magnum condoms were for girth and not length!!!!!
Have you seen more of them in your lifetime than I have????

Arkady, interesting, a bit gross, and a topic I think I'll leave to others to make comparisons out of. (slight shudder)

Speaking of condoms and penii, let's talk discrimination here...when you go into a drug store, they have every type of condom known to man. To get a dental dam, you have to go to a sex shop. WTF is up with that??? NO FAIR!

A friend of mine specializes in them - used to be head of bio at NYU & was director of snake house at the Bronx Zoo. He has an amazing collection. His wife also taught at NYU & was describing some of the collection to the class of 250 kids & said, "Dr. Dowling has one 8 feet long!" Riot in the classroom...

Ha ha ha unfortunately completely true. I will be sure to tell Steve.
HobokenRocks, so you won't be moving to Brooklyn Heights? I am sorry to hear it.
Jessi, Bird is hiring, really? The one on Grand is always so empty I worry about them. Of course, if Kim France just goes by once a season and orders the whole stock, that should keep them in business.

Rob, why don't you make one yourself? Or go to a proper hallmark store (do they still have those kiosks where you create your own card and have a variety of graphics to choose from and you add in your own wording?) There's a hallmark/big card store in Bay Ridge on 5th Ave near the corner of 86th Street. Take the R to 86th Street or ride the south bound B63 bus.

Saran wrap breaks too easily and is porous so that makes the sex not so safe.

So Kens, does that mean you pay for the meal...and eat it?
Posted by: jessibaby at August 26, 2009 2:37 PM
Kens...I always was perplexed by my straight friends going to strip clubs and getting lap dances. It's soooo bad for the hetero community when gay guys can get the actual goods just about anywhere, oftentimes for the price of a drink or even nothing!!!!!!!
There of course was a downside that no one knew about until the late eighties.

Snappy, M4L, it's all good in the hood. Mrs. C knows full well that when her male friends show me the town when we're in Montreal, we aren't just going to get our smoked meat. Oh, that is prime for a very naughty re-write by switching around the words "meat" and "smoked".

CG_ups, although it's logical & easy to "say" that since parents made many sacrifices raising us and that we should return the favor when possible, it's another to see someone ACTUALLY go "do it" (especially now preparing to take 2nd job). much respect and super commendable. your mom raised a good kid.

Chinese kids seem to have an incredible sense of responsibility when it comes to taking care of their parents. My mom always insists on paying for everything when with her "kids", who are now middle aged and grandkids. Even if shopping and Mama Champion is around, she won't let anybody pay for anything.
Mrs. C doesn't understand or like it. Her theory is that, no matter how much or how little the parents have, they should always be taken care of by the kids when they go out (and doing more if the parents need help). And the times we've gone out for meals with my mom and Mrs. C's parents and my mom has insisted on paying, my father-in-law goes ballistic with the thought that a widowed elderly lady would pay for the group, regardless of her financial position. There are not many things as entertaining as watching the fights that ensue at dim sum over who will pay the bill.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at August 26, 2009 3:22 PM
Biff, ambush them by paying for the bill when you go to the restroom. I always do that. When the party is expecting the waiter to bring over the check & fight for it, the waiter is actually bringing me change.
Posted by: more4less at August 26, 2009 3:27 PM
Biff, I never knew that.
Do Chinese parents generally help their kids with downpayments or college tuition or that just not in the culture?
Posted by: Kensingtonian at August 26, 2009 3:28 PM
"Biff, ambush them by paying for the bill when you go to the restroom. I always do that."
M4L, I've actually done that many times. When Gon Gon realizes what happens, he gets pissed! I once had dim sum with a group that included a very burly, young, male Chinese cop (easy there, DIBS) and a visiting elderly Chinese woman, who was around 65 years old. She literally kicked his ass fighting over the check. I never saw anything like it. Chinese are visibly upset when they don't have the honour of paying for everyone.

Dibs - no here's been on!
Biff - whenever I want to pay for the bill for people I want to take out to dinner but know when the check arrives they will insist on paying, I always excuse myself right after I finish dessert and go to the maitre D and explain I would like to pay for the bill, they give me the check right away and I sqaure it away upfront in the restaurant, then I come back and say ok everyone let's go, dinners been paid for - that guy in the blue shirt over there paid for us, how nice!
Posted by: gemini10 at August 26, 2009 3:34 PM
Biff, I'd pay to see that.
Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at August 26, 2009 3:37 PM
"Biff, I never knew that."
Kens, I'm not sure if it's a cultural difference with Jews. I might be skewed as almost all of the Jewish kids I knew growing up had very affluent parents who paid for everything for their kids.
M4L, another funny story about a way to try to subtly pay for the bill. Was with Mrs. C and Mama Champion at a restaurant in Montreal. Mrs. C asks for the bill in French so Mama C doesn't have a chance to pay it. However, Mrs. C forgot that Mama C was born and raised in Montreal and understood everything, so she was all set to pounce on the cheque when the waiter brought it to the table. Mrs. C didn't try that trick again.

I'm not Chinese so I can't speak for the billions or so of them, but my parents did pay for my college tuition (though I swung grad school on my own, yay for student loans). So I returned the favor with a townhouse and cars. I think I got the short end of the stick.
Posted by: CG_ups at August 26, 2009 3:44 PM
Biff, the times I pull that stunt, the poor wait staff gets chewed out. How could you do that? Didn't I tell you I was going to pay the bill? My money is no good here?.....
Posted by: more4less at August 26, 2009 3:46 PM
Biff, that's what I am saying. Jewish parents help out their "crotchfruit" whenever they can. My parents are ready to give up everything for my sis and me just so we are happy. they'll give up their last peace of bread so they can add to our steak dinner which never made any sense to me but they insist.
It was very difficult for the to pack up everything in move here in their late 40s - early 50s, dropping careers there and fairly prominent good lifestyle to come here and live without the language knowledge and making something here just so their kids have a better lifestyle. My poor mom went from being and electrical engineer to cleaning floors and toilets just so we have a better future. She didn't do that for long and as soon as she learned the language and got a new career going she switched but still. How many people would do that?
I was just genuinely wondering if that's the same case in Asian cultures.

I was lucky my parents never needed us kids to help them pay for anything so it became a point of pride to be able to insist and pay for dinner at a nice restaurant. But I was planning to have Mom move in with me when she said she wanted to come back to NYC after my father died. Sadly she died before we could do that. We were raised that way- if family needed something, you helped out. My parents looked after a long line of needy relatives over the years. When we wanted to take care of them they were happy to tell us they didn't need it.

Haha, Arkady! She wasn't elderly from my perspective. She was almost too young to be my mom. However, compared to the cop, who must have been in his early '20s, she seemed much older.
Kens, I think both cultures have their merits. On the one hand, many (not all) Jewish parents seem to want to give every last cent to their kids and will do everything for them. I don't think this means Chinese parents wouldn't do the same. However, the Chinese culture is incredibly admirable to me in how much the children respect their parents and other older relatives, which is in contrast to what we typically see in other cultures in North America, and how the kids will do anything for and respect their parents. Just seems to be different expectations between the parents and kids between the two cultures, but I respect both.

Freaky thing...When I first bought the Pure Moods Cd I listened to Teardrop repeatedly and I kept daydreaming about being over water and moving it was raining. Kens,
same deal with asians. my parents took bs jobs forever. my aunt and her husband went thru the same career change as your parents. My aunt was a respected and decently ranked agricultural scientist in China but had to work in garment factory before she became a store manager somewhere else. Her husband was the head Doctor who ran a sizeable hospital but had to beg to be a nurse's assistant. I remember my cousins telling me how they hear their dad crying in shame at nights and that they owe them to "make it" in this country for their parents' big sacrifices. This is primary reason why so many immigrant kids do well in school and if they don't do well, it aint because they didn't try hard enough. Hunger to succeed is powered by more than just doing well for yourself but to help confirm their parents' sacrifices were not wasted or their hopes misplaced when they came to this country.

M4L, I think, to generalize, it seems the commonality between Chinese and Jewish parents is that that are typically very hard working and value education over almost everything else. My issue with the Jewish friends I had growing up is that they were so freaking spoiled from day one and just expected everything to be paid for - clothes, cars, education, homes, etc. They still ultimately did well in their own right because they had the fortune to be able to attend good schools and were mostly smart cookies.

"Jewish parents seem to want to give every last cent to their kids and will do everything for them."
This was certainly my experience with my parents and grandparents. The Mother's Day before my mother died, we were at a garden center together, and I bought her a hanging plant that she admired. She was very annoyed with me, but I refused to let her pay me back. A few months after my mother died, I was wearing my winter coat, which happened to have been at her house on Mother's Day weekend, and I open the front pocket and there I discover 2 crumpled $5 bills. My mother had found a way to send me home with the $10 for the plant without my knowing about it - those $5 bills were the last thing she ever gave me, and they're still in my coat pocket.

But of course! We might strain ourselves lifting everything!! LOL!!! HA HA HA!
Posted by: cobblehiller at August 26, 2009 4:30 PM
CGar, that story just gave me goosebumps. Wow. I suppose I also might have teared up if I was just a bit more curious.
Seriously, that is very moving.
Posted by: Biff Champion at August 26, 2009 4:30 PM
CG'ed, that's a nice story about your mum. It made me a little sniffly. My grams would always sneak money into my pockets because I wouldn't take it from her.

DIBS wishes he was Chinese by incarceration.
Posted by: Biff Champion at August 26, 2009 4:32 PM
cobble, its about refreshing and google adds paying for advertisement based on traffic. Trust me, he's making good money for this :o). PLUSA contribute more than you think and that's why this jscheff is either not a good journalist or is enjoying stirring up the pot in the threads. More posts = more people = more refreshes = more clicks = more payments for clicks through google ads.
Posted by: Kensingtonian at August 26, 2009 4:32 PM
CGar...that was a great story.
My grandmother used to give us quarters when we went to visit. Not all of us went every time but whoever did got the 5 quarters for all of us but we'd never turn them over when we got home.
When we were grown and she died we each dropped a quarter into her casket at the wake.

Re: PLUSA Handshake
Sorry, Kens, Cobble is right, so I'm guessing you didn't read the latest version of the manual distributed at Ellis. Given the time and effort, not to mention the portion of your PLUSA dues, that go into producing the manual, I must say I'm a bit disappointed.
(Cobble, I emailed you.)

CGar, :o(

Biff, I told the story here once about the time i was arrested in Hong Kong.
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at August 26, 2009 4:36 PM
Sad face is about your story, not the PLUSA manual
Posted by: Kensingtonian at August 26, 2009 4:36 PM
Dave...that's sweet too. I love the idea of that.
Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at August 26, 2009 4:36 PM
Dave...get your bony fingers back to the closing bell and give us the answer!
Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at August 26, 2009 4:40 PM
Thanks guys. Didn't mean to post it twice. No, really, I'm not trying for 600. My computer froze, I swear.

Hey Cobble...be sure to alert the paparazzi for our outing on Friday. When PLUSAs hit the town to shop, dine and be pampered, that's news baby! Ha!
Nite everyone :-)

That's a great story, dave.
Posted by: CarrollGardened at August 26, 2009 4:45 PM
Kens- my grand and great grandparents did that but my parents gave up a lot to make sure my sister and I had whatever we needed. we were so not affluent (I believe "poor" is a more accurate adjective). My mother used to say we would have to take care of them when they were old but it never happened that way. Still- I would have loved to have had the chance to do so before she died.
Posted by: bxgrl at August 26, 2009 4:47 PM
Totally lovely story C Gar- see, that's why I e-married you :-)
Posted by: bxgrl at August 26, 2009 4:54 PM
Cobble and Snappy- of course I will have offerings for your special day :-) (damn it! I already gave them tiaras!)

Snappy, you kill me!
bxgrl, I was just admiring my tiara last night. BH suggested that I wear it on my birthday!!

"More posts = more people = more refreshes = more clicks = more payments for clicks through google ads."
Exactly. Which is why it was strange a few months back to have Mr. B express a desire for better OT material (which at the time only Benson and I thought was an incredible occurrence). He's f-kng around w/his golden goose!
That was a wonderful story, CarGar!

Um, no. Unless you had some deal w/him going in, that is. Your "reward" is the same as it is for all of us - access to Brownstoner information and witty PLUSA banter.
But, that's probably a good estimate of what he's making per post.

ENY, so once again, the Chinaman is taken advantaged of
Posted by: more4less at August 26, 2009 5:26 PM

Hey, you're talking to a black man. Get in line!

Will do, lechacal
Posted by: CarrollGardened at August 26, 2009 6:30 PM

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at August 26, 2009 6:31 PM
Dave, what are you still doing here? I thought you'd be long gone by now.
Posted by: CarrollGardened at August 26, 2009 6:31 PM
Thanks DIBS!

DIBS, BH will watch football with you anytime! He's a Jets fan, but not for the same reason!
Posted by: cobblehiller at August 26, 2009 6:34 PM
I made a quick sandwich...foot is starting to swell on me again! Maybe later I'll break out the shrimp and linguine with veggies.
Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at August 26, 2009 6:36 PM
CarrollGardened and I ran into each other in midtown today. It was very funny. I was with work colleagues. CG, were you taking a smoke break? Couldn't tell.
Posted by: lechacal at August 26, 2009 6:38 PM
Snappy, is there such a thing as a special bootie that has the heel cut out, so you could stand on the foot without putting pressure on the heel? Would that even help?
Posted by: cobblehiller at August 26, 2009 6:38 PM
Dave, I just Googled Mark Sanchez, and we're in total agreement. (And this is why I'm going to be at the office until 10 tonight!)
Posted by: CarrollGardened at August 26, 2009 6:39 PM
Since my arch is now part of the problem and the pain from standing and walking is shooting up my leg, I don't know if a boot would help. I have an arch supporter stuck on my foot and it's also wrapped up in an ace bandage, but it's not helping right now.
Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at August 26, 2009 6:40 PM
lechacal, How did you guys handle that! Uh, hi, uh, I don't know your real name, and I can't introduce you to my co-workers...AWKWARD!
Posted by: cobblehiller at August 26, 2009 6:42 PM
I was with a friend who smokes. I was taking an iced coffee break and catching up with her before I leave for vacation. We used to sit next door to each other, but we got separated a few months back when [TARP Recipient] had to vacate our floor, so that's our chance to catch up.
Posted by: CarrollGardened at August 26, 2009 6:42 PM
Ok, well, then it's clear that we need to get you a maid! Preferably a nice thick lesbian! ; )
What can I do for you? I'm free for a chunk of tomorrow, do you need anything?
Posted by: cobblehiller at August 26, 2009 6:43 PM
(Will do C Gar!)
Snappy- that sounds awful! Really- let us know if you need us to come over and help you. When I had my foot operated on the Great EVLL was a saint.Of course those good times are over now ;)
Posted by: bxgrl at August 26, 2009 6:44 PM
That would be funny...in front of your co-workers have someone call you the jackal and you call him carroll! That would raise some eyebrows for sure! If any of you ever see me in the streets and you don't know my real first name, please stick with 'Hey you!' instead of Snappy or Insert!
Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at August 26, 2009 6:45 PM
I was with work colleagues on our way to a pitch. We were super early, so we were standing outside on the sidewalk talking and prepping for the pitch when I looked over and there was CGar. We immediately recognized each other of course, and there was sort of a "hey", "hey," and we shook hands, and there was some kind of hand signals that said "yeah we'll totally talk about this later," and then went back to doing our thing. CGar, did you see me when I got out of the car or just when I looked over and noticed you?
Posted by: lechacal at August 26, 2009 6:45 PM
bxgrl, Snappy, remind me to tell you a funny story about when I had foot surgery many years ago! The gist of it is that I was NOT a good patient! And my care-giver, uhm, got a little frustrated with me...and the funny part is how he told me...I was being incredibly ANNOYING!
Posted by: cobblehiller at August 26, 2009 6:46 PM
Thanks you two :-) I'm good though. Arkady has been my angel for the day...she brought me supplies for Hari this afternoon. That woman rocks! It was funny...I tossed my house keys out the window to her so she could get in without me having to go up and down the stairs :) I'm sure that was quite a sight for any passersby.
Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at August 26, 2009 6:47 PM
Hmmmm...a nice thick lesbo maid...I could live with that!
Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at August 26, 2009 6:48 PM
I say an annoyed patient is one that is not having her needs fully met by the helper! It's always the other person's fault :)
Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at August 26, 2009 6:49 PM
Good way to play it Lechacal.
Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at August 26, 2009 6:50 PM
Cobble, it was pretty funny (and weirdly small world). I spotted lechacal before he saw me, and when he turned around we made eye contact and said hello. No exchange of names, and I assured him I would never embarrass him (or any PLUSA) in front of "real" people, only in front of other PLUSAs.
Posted by: CarrollGardened at August 26, 2009 6:52 PM
Thanks Snappy. Then I went inside and stared down the prospective client until they caved and hired us. ;) j/k j/k
Posted by: lechacal at August 26, 2009 6:52 PM
Thanks, bxgrl
Posted by: CarrollGardened at August 26, 2009 6:52 PM
LOL! Get em with the serious Navy stare, eh? Ha!
Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at August 26, 2009 6:53 PM
CGar - but to be clear that reasurrence came in our later email exchange. I think we pretty much exchanged heys on the street, right?
Posted by: lechacal at August 26, 2009 6:53 PM
lechacal, I saw you as soon as you and your colleagues got out of the car.
Posted by: CarrollGardened at August 26, 2009 6:53 PM
600?
Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at August 26, 2009 6:54 PM
In a popular 12-step program, they call people that aren't in the program "Civilians". I find this endlessly amusing!
Posted by: cobblehiller at August 26, 2009 6:54 PM
600?
Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at August 26, 2009 6:54 PM
I mean, lechacal, you're hard to miss. You're a VERY intimidating guy! ;-)
Posted by: CarrollGardened at August 26, 2009 6:54 PM
Dammit! CarGar, you foiled my #600 efforts! Sigh. I'll never win again.
Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at August 26, 2009 6:55 PM
Did I just 600? How truly pathetic!
Posted by: CarrollGardened at August 26, 2009 6:55 PM
I totally expected Biff to pop up and snag #600...the sneaky bastard!
Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at August 26, 2009 6:56 PM
Actually, CGar, now that we're talking about this, I think we need to update the manual. We need a section on public acknowledgement of fellow PLUSAs!!
Without talking about the details, wasder and Biff had "a situation" once!
Posted by: cobblehiller at August 26, 2009 6:56 PM
a friend ran into smoking with a bunch of plusas at the ellis meeting. hahahha.

Absolutely, Cobble. I ran into sixyears on Henry & Atlantic the day after I first met him, and Biff said he ran into someone on Wall Street today.

You're quite right, lechacal. I had already spotted you, so when you turned around, I just looked at you and said "Yes", and you said "Yes" back, and then you said you'd talk to me later! That was it.
Posted by: CarrollGardened at August 26, 2009 7:03 PM
snappy get one of those elevator chair lifts for the stairs that the old lady in Gremlins had! tho honestly when the gremlins farked with the electricity and she went shooting out the window into the snow at 100 mph, lol, but i wouldnt want that happening to you. you need an old school raised bed with a bunch of thick-thighed oiled up lesbians in sarongs lifting you up and down the stairs.
