10:00

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at August 21, 2009 9:26 AM

Yes, details, por favor! more4less dropped sixyears off at my place around 1:00 and all he could do was mumble. Something about too many shots!

Posted by: jessibaby at August 21, 2009 9:27 AM

Shots! UH-OH!

Posted by: cobblehiller at August 21, 2009 9:31 AM

But, Rob, I bet you were adorable in the pantaloons!

Posted by: Arkady at August 21, 2009 9:34 AM

I did enjoy my first and last trip to Williamsburg thou. I bought churros on the L subway platform. But that train had WAY TOO MANY white hipster people for me!!! Scary.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at August 21, 2009 9:35 AM

Rob, you sound entirely too sober this morning! No shots for you?

Posted by: cobblehiller at August 21, 2009 9:36 AM

I left after first shot.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at August 21, 2009 9:38 AM

Such restraint DIBS!

Posted by: cobblehiller at August 21, 2009 9:39 AM

cobble, no.. i went home after work first and i just didnt have it in me to go back out. who showed up btw?

*rob*

Posted by: PitbullNYC at August 21, 2009 9:39 AM

I left around 11 when I got a whole cup of Cranberry vodka spilled all over my private parts! I had a couple of friends to meet up with so I stayed out till 3. I am barely typing this now.

It was loads of fun!

Posted by: Kensingtonian at August 21, 2009 9:40 AM

JB, I quiz'd & grilled 6yrs that this is indeed your residence that I'm dropping him off vs some late night bootie call with some other girl. glad to hear you just confirmed it's indeed your residence

Posted by: more4less at August 21, 2009 9:42 AM

I'm still drunk FYI

Lechecal, CarGar and myself were the last men standing at Pete's. After CarGar left it was approx 1am - then Lechecal and I went to 'Union Pool' and pretty much just walked around and made fun of hipsters to their face. So freakin funny.

Posted by: dirty_hipster at August 21, 2009 9:43 AM

Biff is the official headcount counter. He'll give his full report as soon as he visits the OT I am sure.

Posted by: Kensingtonian at August 21, 2009 9:43 AM

oh - and we left at 3:15am

Posted by: dirty_hipster at August 21, 2009 9:44 AM

Haha, more4less, I'm surprised he didn't just have you drop him a few doors down at that Blue Diamond place :)

Posted by: jessibaby at August 21, 2009 9:44 AM

So last night, did anyone go home with a hipster chick? a hipster dude? a dirty hipster? a clean hipster (is there such a thing)?

But, I guess I really should be asking: Last night did anyone get high with a little help from their friends?

Posted by: Expert Textpert at August 21, 2009 9:45 AM

3:15??? i haven't been up that late since 1993.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at August 21, 2009 9:45 AM

Loads of fun as always and happy I woke up inside. Thanks M4L for the ride.

Dibs, the arms on the bf! Was he around for the renovation?

Posted by: DeLepp at August 21, 2009 9:45 AM

So this penguin is having trouble with his car and brings it to a mechanic. Mechanic tels the penguin it's be a few minutes, so the penguin goes around the corner to get some ice cream. He comes back a few minutes later and the mechanic says, "hey buddy, I think I know what your problem is - it looks like you blew a seal." Penguin wipes of his chin and replies, "nah, it's just some ice cream."

Posted by: lechacal at August 21, 2009 9:45 AM

Kens, 3am?? was hoping you went hope by 12:30 - 1am so you could take care of business.

Posted by: more4less at August 21, 2009 9:46 AM

"I'm still drunk FYI"

Who bought the shots? A new PLUSA?!

Posted by: cobblehiller at August 21, 2009 9:47 AM

"Dibs, the arms on the bf!"

They are nothing compared to the Mexican bf!!!!

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at August 21, 2009 9:48 AM

I won't be online for much of the day, but I will report that Dirty Hipster and I stayed out until after 3 am doing what I can only describe as aggressively fucking with hipsters. More later. We were pretending to be from a reality TV show, or "management" of the bar, etc etc. Went to some total hipster dive. I of course was in suit and tie. I am so hung over right not.

Posted by: lechacal at August 21, 2009 9:48 AM

not to be a party pooper but i hope you guys arent driving around drunk! this aint nassau county

*rob*

Posted by: PitbullNYC at August 21, 2009 9:50 AM

LOL Lechacal! I need to hear more about this!

Posted by: cobblehiller at August 21, 2009 9:50 AM

Lechecal - It sounds as if your inner Snappy persona emerged!

Posted by: Arkady at August 21, 2009 9:52 AM

Excellent point Rob.

Posted by: cobblehiller at August 21, 2009 9:52 AM

Ha ha ha M4L. Me and DH were drunk texting each other after 1 am.

My last exact worded message to him was, and I quote myself

"OK! Ass success! Fugly but doable. Recently divorced check and dying to fuck! Yey!"

Of course I didn't do anything cause I don't really go for girls that make bad decisions but DH would have loved to be there. She flat out told me that she just signed divorce papers last week and is stressful going through med school exams and needs to get "fucked". I can't make this shit up folks. I send a friend of mine her way.

I was pretty drunk at that point. I guess I am all talk, no action :o(.

Posted by: Kensingtonian at August 21, 2009 9:52 AM

Lechecal - It sounds as if your inner Snappy persona emerged!

Posted by: Arkady at August 21, 2009 9:52 AM

It sounded like his inner curiosity emerged if he's commenting on my bf's big arms!!! :)

Did you get a look at his ass???

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at August 21, 2009 9:53 AM

Rob, I was totally drinking and driving BUT I am Russian. We're excused from those laws.

Posted by: Kensingtonian at August 21, 2009 9:54 AM

Kens, do you have diplomatic immunity???

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at August 21, 2009 9:55 AM

Kensingtonian, don't forget that your sister reads this blog!

Posted by: jessibaby at August 21, 2009 9:56 AM

Boys, boys, boys. Oh boy.

Posted by: cobblehiller at August 21, 2009 9:56 AM

oh yeah - and what a shocker, Dave's BF is a very attractive, ripped asian man

Posted by: dirty_hipster at August 21, 2009 9:58 AM

Also, none of the hipsters we aggresssively fucked with last night even lived in Brooklyn - it was full of weird hipster tourists from Los Angeles, Spain and Ohio.

Posted by: dirty_hipster at August 21, 2009 9:59 AM

dibs, sorry I didn't get to meet the bf. I got out of my yoga class at 9pm, dripping in sweat. I know that in a roomful of W-burg hipsters that nobody would've noticed my disheveled-ness, but I do have my standards. So: home, shower, bed.

Posted by: WonTon at August 21, 2009 10:00 AM

EUROTRASH

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at August 21, 2009 10:00 AM

It's times like these when I wish I had a video camera. I sort of envision DH and Lechacal walking around Wmsburg, with lechacal doing the manly Popeye thing, eating spinach and intimidating poor hipsters who probably ran screaming from them.

Hmmmm....no Car Gar yet? What have you done with my e-hubby, guys?

Posted by: bxgrl at August 21, 2009 10:01 AM

Dave, don't have diplomatic immunity unfortunately but we all have a bunch of lawyers on speed dial who specialize in just that. BTW don't worry about the sandwich $ thing.

Jessi, sis never lurks in the OT plus she knows me all too well. She wouldn't care at all if she read what I said.

Is Biff alive this morning or he got curious and left with some hipster?

Posted by: Kensingtonian at August 21, 2009 10:04 AM

Kens, am surprised u didn't offer her "car service"

Posted by: bitter retort at August 21, 2009 10:06 AM

I thought I only had 6 beers but I forgot to count the three I had in manhattan before arriving.

The Chinese bf is always amazed at how much white people can drink.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at August 21, 2009 10:06 AM

CGar can hang bxgrl. It was loads of fun. So which hood we're hitting next week? We might as well start a regular Brownstoner Thirsty Thursday thing going.

Posted by: Kensingtonian at August 21, 2009 10:08 AM

bitter, I only offer Ken's cab service to official PLUSAs
:o). Seems like M4L is competing in my market segment. We will have Cab wars pretty soon.

Posted by: Kensingtonian at August 21, 2009 10:09 AM

Isn't there a chapter in the rule book that says Thirsty Thursday 'hoods should be chosen by subway access?

Posted by: Arkady at August 21, 2009 10:11 AM

Burning Question of the Day #1:

- Did anyone use DH's "facilities"?

Posted by: brighton beoch at August 21, 2009 10:13 AM

"Isn't there a chapter in the rule book that says Thirsty Thursday 'hoods should be chosen by subway access?"

No, there isn't—yet, I'll rectify that as soon as the PLUSA manual managing editor CGar appears.

Posted by: cobblehiller at August 21, 2009 10:16 AM

"Isn't there a chapter in the rule book that says Thirsty Thursday 'hoods should be chosen by subway access?"

All the best places are furthest from the subway.

Posted by: dirty_hipster at August 21, 2009 10:18 AM

Cobble, doesn't CGar pitch a tent on your deck? Have Chad go and rouse him.

Posted by: jessibaby at August 21, 2009 10:20 AM

Somehow i just can't see CaGar living in a tent.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at August 21, 2009 10:21 AM

Yes, but the flaps are still down on the tent...I don't dare bother him.
CGar-dog might bite me!!

Posted by: cobblehiller at August 21, 2009 10:22 AM

Kens, I won't be looking to test your fighting skillz yet cause our cab coverage does not overlap yet.

Don't you folks have anything else to do?!

Been busy lately, preparing for vacation next week.

Posted by: benson at August 21, 2009 10:24 AM

Walks from the subway are fine - get to know the 'hood. But there ought to be a station to walk from that doesn't involve a 55 minute trip w/ 3 transfers unless MM escorts us & points out interesting arcana.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at August 21, 2009 10:31 AM

DH and Lechacal;

Stop bullying poor hipsters from Ohio! You want to really man-up? Go the the VFW bar (it's open to the public) on Van Brunt Street in Red Hook, where the old-timers hang out. Try them out for size, and see if you live to talk about it!!!

Present and accounted for. 6 Stolis on the rocks, on top of which some geniuses had the brilliant idea to do Kamikaze shots and then Jameson shots. What a combo. I got home around 1:30 - and still had to walk and feed the CGar-dog, and she doesn't care what time it is or how drunk I am, she's rarin' to go. I would've checked in sooner, but I couldn't get Biff to cover my 10am call.

Where's Snappy? Snappy, you're soooooooo right about lechecal. And I'm only saying this because he posted that he won't be around the OT for awhile. Intimidating does not begin to describe the guy. Scary intimidating. All the guy had to do was look at the bartenders and they just gave him drinks without charging him. Scares the bejesus out of me. That's all I'm saying.

Good to see Al Vann at the subway station begging for votes this morning. I think this is the first ounce of work he has done since the last election.

And if Al's people are reading this:

Tell hiim not to wear his pj's when trying to impress. I know you only have to walk 4 blocks to the subway entrance, but make it look like you are trying.

Tell him to press the flesh with his neighbors. We have met several times before but I guess he has never noticed me since his head was up his ass every time.

Tell him I don't care who he supported for president of the country. No one elected you to pick a president, least of all me. (And if that is one of your greatest accomplishment, you are sadder than I thought.)

Mornin' Asshats. Contrary to my expectations at this time yesterday morning, I'm feeling completely fine at the moment. I think I left the bar around 11:30 or 12 more sober than I've been leaving a bar in a long time. I had no problem getting a cab back to BH.

DH, thanks for organizing. Pete's was a fantastic venue and I had a great time.

Headcount: Kens, CGar, DIBS and bf, DeLepp, DH, Biff, Lechacal, etson, infinitejester, sixyears, more4less. Am I missing anyone?

Posted by: Biff Champion at August 21, 2009 10:39 AM

Posted by: more4less at August 21, 2009 10:40 AM

Benson, I actually got some ridiculously cheap specials in mail for that trip a few weeks ago. It was on Norwegian for 10 nights, $629 bucks for the inside room. You can't beat that. I think you're going for the 7 day one though right? The 10 day covered more places from what I can remember.

I am looking forward to my long weekend getaway to RI (Warwick, Providence, Newport and Block Island). Etson, you ended up going there not to long ago, correct? Did you like it? I've been to most of those places before but never Block Island. I love RI.

Posted by: Kensingtonian at August 21, 2009 10:41 AM

Yeah, I'm going on the 7-day, with Princess. Princess is better for us older, over-the-hill Asshats.

Miss Chiff...is Bill Cunningham running against Al Vann????

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at August 21, 2009 10:44 AM

ha. so it was basically a sausage fest

*rob*

Posted by: PitbullNYC at August 21, 2009 10:44 AM

Miss Chiff;

It's incredible to me that Al Vann is still around. The guy hasn't had anything to say for -oh - 20 years or so? Well, I guess being in the NYC Council is better than real work.

Posted by: benson at August 21, 2009 10:45 AM

"ha. so it was basically a sausage fest"

I prefer to refer to it as Boys Night Out.

Posted by: Biff Champion at August 21, 2009 10:46 AM

"ha. so it was basically a sausage fest"

Indeed. We were buying each other drinks left and right.

"some geniuses had the brilliant idea to do Kamikaze shots"

I take full credit for that one! I left with etson around 11:15 I think, because I had a nightcap back in the Slope.

and please etson - remember my words of wisdom

When some asshole calls you a 'pussy' for leaving a bar (like me) you respond to them "I am what I eat!"

Do solo efforts count?

Sounds like sixyears had the opportunity at the end of the night but not sure if the drinks hampered the performance. JB, care to comment?

Posted by: Biff Champion at August 21, 2009 10:54 AM

Kens,
I enjoyed Newport. I went with my mom over Memorial Day w/e when she was over here, and so it was special for that. It was a little crowded for part of the weekend, but guess you get that anywhere. Would be really awesome to be there during the week in summer.
Also enjoyed the natural scenery in Jamestown.

DH, forgive my poor manners. What Biff said. Pete's was great. And thanks for calling the car - got me home in about 5 minutes. Much to my surprise, I was totally up for going with you and lechacal, but I had to get home to the CGar-dog.

lechacal, thanks for posting the penguin joke, still ROFL!

Posted by: CarrollGardened at August 21, 2009 10:56 AM

Dave: I think Bill is running against Al. There was another woman a month or two ago. Last name was Wright I believe. Both Bill and "Wright" were engaging, well-dressed, had copious campaign material and said hello to me first before I could say something to them. I don't know either of them from Adam, but they left a good impression with me.

Benson: Al Vann is a waste of space. I'll take a complete unknown over him. He doesn't even get his face in front of a camera or his name in the press like Tish. He is on autopilot. He needs to find another job. Hopefully one wear he can wear his pj's.

Posted by: Miss Chiff at August 21, 2009 11:00 AM

Miss Chiff....Bill lives around the corner on Macon bet Stuyvesant & Malcolm X. He's either a retired cop or fireman, owns a number of buildings in the area. He's the one who recommended MIllad to me. Millad has done his brownstone work. He seems like a nice outgoing guy.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at August 21, 2009 11:03 AM

"When some asshole calls you a 'pussy' for leaving a bar (like me) you respond to them "I am what I eat!""

It's a good line, DH! Wishful thinking much of the time, in my case.
Haven't been called out for that in a while, b/c usually I am the asshole that overstays his welcome at a bar!

(speaking of which, jester - I am totally up for trying your local sometime)

Posted by: etson at August 21, 2009 11:03 AM

Sounds like Al Vann is in the right position, one where he can't do too much damage. Imagine if he drove a bus?

Posted by: DeLepp at August 21, 2009 11:03 AM

ughhhhhh my head still hurts! DH, thanks for organizing!

Anyway, if you asshats want to keep drinking on Saturday, come to Sycamore in Ditmas Park anytime after 2. We'll be there awhile and if the weather cooperates, we'll be out in the garden.

If you want to do a short self-guided tour of the area beforehand, get off the Q at Church, turn right on Church, left on East 16th, and right on Albemarle. You can then turn left on any of the streets to Cortelyou.

Posted by: sixyearsandcounting at August 21, 2009 11:03 AM

I think we should do a gathering in Union Square next time. I'll plan it! Big subway hub you know ;)

(I know I know, Brooklyn blog, Brooklyn digs...)

Speaking of Manhattan, just got back home after walking about with my kids. In a metropolitan swamp. I'm not kidding. Smells like a simmering gravy consisting of human urine, hockers, feces, bacteria of every imaginable type, eau d'body odor and a smattering of 'God-only-knows-what' thrown into said swamp for good measure.

Sigh. I've gotta get me to Brooklyn.

DH, thanks for organizing the drink fest. Petes was a cool spot. Loo lines were unexpectedly short.

Posted by: DeLepp at August 21, 2009 11:06 AM

Alright folks, I'm bringing back my Friday NYC trivia quiz. Here goes...

The last trolley line in NYC was terminated in 1955. There was a reason that this trolley line was the last to go, as it had a unique stop on it. At this stop, one got off the trolley car, and then took an elevator to the actual destination. At that time, this trolley/elevator combination was the only way to get to this place. The trolley line was kept until an alternate mode of transportation could be developed.

Question: where was this trolley stop, and what mode of transportation replaced it?

Be back later.

Posted by: benson at August 21, 2009 11:07 AM

dave--I translated the signs in the Sunset Park thread. It makes me nostalgic for Hong Kong! I march in a lot of demonstrations against destruction of traditional neighborhoods by the government colluding with rapacious tycoons!

The signs are in simplified Chinese, so not Hong Kong Cantonese.

Thanks to the pic, now I know that "Sunset Park" is called "Yat Lohk Gung Yuen".

"Somehow i just can't see CaGar living in a tent."

And why not, dave?! I'll have you know I used to do a lot of backpacking and camping in the White Mountains. Of course now I'd probably have trouble hiking out of the parking lot . . .

Posted by: CarrollGardened at August 21, 2009 11:18 AM

Benson, from the wikipedia for Roosevelt Island:

Although Roosevelt Island is located directly under the Queensboro Bridge, it is not directly accessible from the bridge itself. A trolley connected passengers from Queens and Manhattan to a stop in the middle of the bridge, where passengers could take an elevator down to the island. The trolley operated from the bridge's opening until April 7, 1957.

Hmmmmmm??? That makes it more difficult.

"CGar-dog might bite me!!"

Cobble, CGar-dog has never bitten anyone. She's a real people person and loves everyone. That said, sincere apologies if I woke you, Chad, Chet and BH when I got home last night. (And I've added Arkady's manual request to this weekend's To Do list - Item 7 by my count.)

jester - just sent e-mail

DIBS, see my 11:19 post.

IJ, your post got cut off.

DH, we had IJ's kamikazes, lechecal's Jameson, my Jameson...those are the ones I remember. I also had three Jamesons on the rocks (which unfortunately had more rocks than Jameson) and two PBRs. At least.

Posted by: sixyearsandcounting at August 21, 2009 11:32 AM

dave, your building in Hong Kong has a different name in Chinese than it does in English. A lot of buildings in Hong Kong are like that.

Yu Ging Fa Yuen means "Abundant View Flower Garden".

I know the buildings--they are next to the Gleanealy School, at the intersection of the shortcut road I use to hike up to the Peak. It's a big mess there now--lots of construction. The gov't engineering department is doing something with the drainage.

Posted by: WonTon at August 21, 2009 11:32 AM

"CGAr, can you fit CGAR-dog AND a penguin in that tent?"

Yes, bitter retort, as a matter of fact the CGar-dog has a stuffed Opus the Penguin (Bloom County) she likes to play with.

Posted by: CarrollGardened at August 21, 2009 11:33 AM

CGar, sounds like the clown car. You could probably host next week's drinks in that tent. Impressive!

Ding, Ding, Ding!!! Correct!!! The trolley elevator combinatio was replaced by the no-name automobile bridge that connects Astoria with Roosevelt Island. Folks continued to complain, however, as there was no direct connection between Manahattan and RI. Moreover, this new link was only good for automobile drivers. Hence, the tram between Manahattan and RI was born. This latter link was supposed to be only temporary. It was only supposed to be there until a subway link was built, which eventually happened. However, the tram proved to be so popular that it stayed.

Wow.... last night was hilarious. DH and I walking around some ridiculous hipster hive, toting PBRs, walking up to pretty much every group of people we saw with a new line of utter bullshit every time. Me in suit and tie, hipster also looking pretty non-hipster....

DH you're so right - they were all from Ohio and Spain (that was random) and other very non-NYC type places and had all moved to williamsburg in the last five minutes or so. Megan and Josh from Ohio so to speak.

Online for a few minutes only then off to VT...

LOL, WonTon, as you well know, the Hong Kong Government's "Make Work" Public works expenditures have had that place torn up off and on for 20 years!!!!!!

We used to have a vegetable truck stop there one day a week.

Also, there's a condo just below the LRC, next to it, that has a tiny store in it and that was the only place I could find the canned cranberry jelly for Thanksgiving back in 1992!!!!!

I miss those days in Hong Kong!!!!!

"DH - Was I speaking Spanish at some point last night? Fuzzy memory but I feel like that maybe happened."

Yeah - you were speaking spanish to that cute spanish chick who was with the french dude who looked like andre the giant.

They were actually really nice.

I think we only offended the asian guy, and maybe those two black hipsters we talked to first.

Good times - have fun in Vermont lech. Don't forget to stop at the border for your Vermont 'welcoming package'

Posted by: dirty_hipster at August 21, 2009 11:49 AM

CH, last time I was in Dallas and ordered a pecan pie, I pronounced it Pee-KAN. The waiter told me that's what you keep next to the bed for use in the middle of the night.

Posted by: bitter retort at August 21, 2009 11:52 AM

What Asian guy, dh???

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at August 21, 2009 11:52 AM

Oh yeah - Andre the giant and his girlfriend. Talked to her about Spain for a while. We definitely offended the asian guy. The two black hipsters just thought we were weird, understandably. Dibs would have been well within his rights to call me an asshole. On the other hand all of those people needed to get fucked with. There's something about hipsters that just makes me want to needle them and rile them up.

Posted by: cobblehiller at August 21, 2009 11:55 AM

"What Asian guy, dh???"

There was this asian hipster dude at Union Pool who might have been gay (he was hanging out with mean, ugly chicks)

He looked kinda like your BF - but very skinny.

Posted by: dirty_hipster at August 21, 2009 11:55 AM

dave, the public works stuff up in that Peak area seem pretty legit to me. The slope engineering there is a marvel. I do a lot of hiking up on the slope, and the network of conduits, drainage outlets and erosion controls is beyond impressive--we're talking about a city built on a tropical mountain slope with a monsoon season and typhoons. It must be a bitch to maintain.

Posted by: WonTon at August 21, 2009 11:56 AM

"Dangerous Slopes"

All of us gweilo had a real laugh at that one. Have you seen "Gran Torino" yet!!!!????

Posted by: cobblehiller at August 21, 2009 12:01 PM

BTW, dibs, your rent at that place sure was insane expat-package ripoff levels! Over 100,000 a month!

For that amount, you could probably rent an entire building and rooftop in Soho.

Just to give you an idea of "normal folk" rents in HK, my flat--2BR, high floor, 24hr doorman, great open view, middle of Soho next to the escalator--is 9,600.

Folks;

Since I need to sign off and get ready for my vacation, I'd like switch gears a minute. I HIGHLY, HIGHLY recommend an article in the September issue of "Atlantic" magazine entitled "What Washington Doesn't Get About Health Care". This article is brilliant in its analysis of the current state of our health care, and what President Obama is proposing.

I'd like to also point out that the author, David Goldhill, is a self-proclaimed Democrat, writing in Atlantic Magazine.

See you later!

cobble- you gave him a tin cup with a rusty bottom! Had you given him a Royal Doulton, 1865 porcelain chamber pot with original cover I would not have objected. I realize it would not go with the civil war cot but my e-hubby is entitled to the finer things in life.

Posted by: bxgrl at August 21, 2009 12:06 PM

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at August 21, 2009 12:11 PM

I thought this was an e-marriage..

Posted by: bitter retort at August 21, 2009 12:11 PM

bxgrl, Listen here lady! If you were any kind of an e-wife....you wouldn't let your e-hubby live in a tent on a deck in the first place!!

Btw, CGar, Chet, Chad and BH will be mixing the first round of drinks beginning at 4pm sharp, and we can get going with the PLUSA manual edits. It should only take us until Sunday Noon time. Not to worry though, I went to the liquor store and bought 15 bottles of vodka, 32 bottles of Jameson, and 43 bottles of wine.

That should keep us, no?

Posted by: etson at August 21, 2009 12:16 PM

True, Cobble...especially as I have lost several towels to the wee one lately! Ok...keep the towels...but I don't want to hear anything about them being pre-warmed on a heated towel rack!

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at August 21, 2009 12:17 PM

dave, that sounds more reasonable. But looks like the management jacked up the rent like crazy after the handover.

The sister of a good friend of mine just got posted to HK on expat package with hubby. Their company's paying 90,000 a month for a very undistinguished 3BR on Kennedy Road. I advised her to take the allowance in cash, then find a cheaper, nicer place away from the "expat zone".

But she can't do it. Her company pays all the allowance to its HK agent, who "negotiates" the deals with the property management companies.

It's such a huge, wasteful, scam.

Posted by: WonTon at August 21, 2009 12:20 PM

"I don't want to hear anything about them being pre-warmed on a heated towel rack!"

cobble, not to worry, bxgrl takes good care of me. Besides, after selling the manse, I'm enjoying the simple life in the tent, and couldn't ask for better hosts than you, BH, Chad and Chet.

And, yes, the CGar-dog is a she, but no one has done her "gender verification" yet, so "confusion" is to be expected (and I should know!).

Funny, I could really go for shots right now! Kamikazes! Jameson! Bring it on! What is it they say about the hair of the dog that bit you!

wow i cant believe 3 people jumped on zinca's gay ice cream comment about donating blood, 2 of them gay themselves.

when you donate blood they ask if you are gay. if you are a gay male you cannot donate blood. unless youre a virgin. seriously. hasnt anyone tried to donate blood before? i mean i guess in a sense it makes sense considering gay men are a high risk population, but im shocked people had no clue about this.

Then they added the questions on the form that if you lived in Eastern Europe from more than 2 years at a time (which I was since I was born there, I can't donate anymore. No one complained when I donated pints and pints for years before! I really wanted to help but they don't want my blood, oh well. And I got good blood too god damn it!

Posted by: PitbullNYC at August 21, 2009 1:14 PM

Ya know...speaking of screening...here is my rant.

When you go to the City's Health Dept. offices to get a free anonymous AIDS test, they ask you if you see any mental health professionals. I told them yes, I see a therapist. They then told me that I can't do the test anonymously and must register with my name, DOB, therapist's name, etc. When I asked why seeing a therapist relieves me of my right to do this anonymously, they said it was the City's policy to not allow people to do AIDS tests anonymously if they see mental health professionals due to the risk that they may become suicidal and hurt themselves if their test comes back positive.

Now call me crazy (no pun intended!) but wouldn't a person who already has a support system in place (ie a therapist or whatever) be in a better position to take bad news from an AIDS test? WTF? I told them this and also told them that such a policy only encourages people to lie about their mental health background, thereby defeating their 'safety protocol.' The director totally agreed with me and said there was nothing she could do. So what did I do? Went to another location for the test and lied about my seeing a therapist. Ninnies.

Unfortunately for the rest of us, those in that age bracket who were big Dynasty fans saw Joan Collins as a role model and, as a result, became very, very bitchy. I know, I was "married" to someone like that!!! LOL

Bloomberg: Drug CEOs Don't Make Much Money

NEW YORK (AP/1010 WINS) -- The mayor -- and wealthiest person in New York City with a fortune estimated at $16.5 billion -- made the comments on his radio show Friday during a discussion about health care.

"You know, last time I checked, pharmaceutical companies don't make a lot of money, their executives don't make a lot of money -- not that they couldn't be better,'' Bloomberg said.

"I've had 2 years to grow claws, Mother. Jungle Red!"

"One of the advantages of being single is you get to spread out in bed like a swastika". (It was 1938, so this line still passed muster, somewhat.)

Little Mary: "Sheba, get off of Daddy's coat."

Posted by: dirty_hipster at August 21, 2009 1:50 PM

Dave, Little Mary was awful, though the actress, Virginia Weidler, was quite good as Katharine Hepburn's younger sister, Dinah Lord, in another favorite movie, "The Philadelphia Story".

BTW, my college roommate who loves the movie (a member of the Team) is the one I told you about who lives in Philly. I'm sure his house is not far from yours, but I can't remember the street offhand because he's bought and sold a couple of houses in Center City.

I first saw "The Women" when I worked in a video store in Center City when I was in college. The manager (another member of the Team) played "The Women" in the store on an endless loop, and how could you not pick up all those great Clare Booth Luce lines. Never saw the remake; don't want to; I hear it's unwatchable.

(Working in the video store was a truly unpleasant experience - had to wear Philip Morris costumes on deliveries, and one day the owner actually asked me how much he'd have to pay me to get me to kow tow to him, to which I replied that he didn't have enough money, and I quit shortly thereafter!)

Arkady...back in 1971 I was at the Concert For Bngladesh and I fell in love, totally with one of the guitar players...he looked Latino.

I think it was both he and Johnny Crawford who made me become infatuated with that look.

I never found out who that guitar player was until I got the DVD of the Concert a few years ago...it was jesse Ed davis and he was a full blooded American Indian. He died tragically of drugs in the eighties but ot this very day I remember the exact episode of the Rifleman where I first saw the son and the time Jesse Ed davis walked on stage. I couldn't have cared less about gerorge harrison, Ringo, Eric Clapton and the others up there on stage. I was mesmerized by that guitar player

I might be mad enough to host. I was talking about this last night. I want a big old fashioned keg of Rheingold out on the deck.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at August 21, 2009 2:59 PM

Yesterday I got in trouble cuz I didn't know only gay guys drank pina coladas!

Today the gay guys don't know they're not supposed to donate blood.

"And don't they screen the blood anyway??? "

Snappy they do but I believe there's an incubation period of some kind where blood can be infectious but it can't be picked up in screening. That's why if you have an incident, like pricking yourself with a needle, or are the victim of a sex attack, or find that you have had unprotected sex with a poz person, you need to be tested a number of times over a period of at least a year.

I remember a story from the early days of AIDS... there was an organized crime figure who was going in for a pre-planned operation in which he needed a transfusion. He was too smart to get blood from the normal pool, might be contaminated! So he enlisted his 'safe' relatives to get transfusions and store the blood. You, one of them was infected and hey both died.

Hey DIBS, remember Daxor? They were going to make a fortune storing people's blood over time so they wouldn't have to get it from outside. That was the only stock I ever owned that tripled in a week!

Posted by: denton at August 21, 2009 3:00 PM

Tell me what I can bring, Dave. I can get the keg on Court Street, but can't guarantee Rheingold.

Hi Jackasses! Before I sing off for the weekend I hope you get in some splinter tighting exersises. The I-Beams are on the way! Here's an example...

August 20, 2009
Contesting an Appraisal?

We are trying refinance our Bed Stuy brownstone and our appraisal came back with an absurdly low number (37% less than 2006 purchase price). Property values in our section of Bed Stuy have held up well with recent sales on our block 7% less than our 2006 purchase price. Our neighbor across the street has their house appraised 3 months ago and it came in a 6% below our 2006 purchase price. Not bad considering the economic situation. We have given the broker/bank a list of recent comparable property sales to support a higher value, but have not heard back. Has anyone been in a similar situation and had the bank make the loan eventually? We are trying to decide whether we should give up with this application and reapply with another broker or keep waiting. It seems getting an accurate appraisal is a game of chance. Thank you for sharing any of your experience.

Ooops- true, M4L. And PS mommies who don't like ice cream vendors suck too!

And can we get a rousing "SHRILLSTONER SUCCCCCKKKKS!" (in the historically appropriate typefont)

"Biff, come on by...we'll swig beer and play with cats!"

*MUST...RESIST....TYPING...RE-WRITE*

sixyears, I would have joined you but unfortunately have plans tomorrow. Let me know if there is a send-off part 3.

Posted by: Biff Champion at August 21, 2009 4:35 PM

I only know this because they use that song all the time on So You Think You Can Dance, but the song is

Boom Boom Pow by the Black Eyed Peas

at first when i saw it, i thought you were talking about Boom boom by John Lee Hooker, which is aweeeeeesome. :)

Posted by: CG_ups at August 21, 2009 4:35 PM

Going on a cruise with storms and hurricanes ahead of you sucks.

Bxgrl, you e-divorced me? I didn't even get a "Dear John" e-letter!!

Posted by: benson at August 21, 2009 4:36 PM

Arkady - Glover Park, just north of Georgetown. The street I'll be living on is so quiet it makes Brooklyn Heights seem like Williamsburg! Luckily the amenities aren't that far off, but I'll be studying too much to enjoy them.

Posted by: sixyearsandcounting at August 21, 2009 4:36 PM

Oooooh! Big bolt of lightning - looks as if it were right over you, Snappy.

Posted by: Arkady at August 21, 2009 4:36 PM

Love that song Six!

Biff, ROFL! Even 11217 would laugh at that!

Jester, I vote for lopsided bowl cuts with the word PLUSA painted in hot pink down the left side :) Fancy!

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at August 21, 2009 4:37 PM

OMG naked (unattractive) man in the window doing weird things in the hotel across from my office! ACK! LOL. happy friday everyone!

Posted by: bodhi_brooklyn at August 21, 2009 4:37 PM

6 years;

I'll be pulling away from Red Hook at the time of your send-off party. Best of luck in your new endeavor! I'm sure we'll see you again.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at August 21, 2009 4:41 PM

"I don't know if he remembers it, but biff and I planned last night to form a singing group."

jester, I was thinking of that today and am still serious about it. Not singing, but jamming with my drums, your bass, wasder's guitar and any other PLUSAs with any musical talent whatsoever. Let's keep the idea going.

Posted by: Biff Champion at August 21, 2009 4:41 PM

Thanks CG! Incidentally, that's the song I danced the hardest to at Ellis thus complicating matters with my foot! Damned Black Eyed Peas and there bangin' beats!

Happy Friday Bodhi!

Yikes...loud thunder...screaming cats!

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at August 21, 2009 4:41 PM

Mullets for the band!

benson- well, excuse me but it wasn't I who was invited on the cruise. What's an e-wife to do?

Posted by: bxgrl at August 21, 2009 4:41 PM

Six, BH and I aren't going to make it over to Sycamore, but if there is a last Hurrah, please advertise!! And, of course, all the best in DC for you!

Posted by: cobblehiller at August 21, 2009 4:42 PM

Hey, can one of you asshats teach me how to play my acoustic guitar? I started teaching myself a year ago, but stopped. I need help!

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at August 21, 2009 4:43 PM

lol. thanks CHiller. I can't help but stare. i mean it is a summer friday and i'm bored out of my skull! this is serious entertainment.

Posted by: bodhi_brooklyn at August 21, 2009 4:43 PM

I assume you're going to call the band "The PLUSAs"? And I bet you could play at Pete's.

Posted by: CarrollGardened at August 21, 2009 4:44 PM

Biff, absurdity rules the day after a PLUSA gathering but yeah, I'm totally serious too about jamming. how I ever gave up jamming when all I do is listen to music is beyond me. Life intervenes I guess.

Posted by: infinitejester at August 21, 2009 4:44 PM

Yes, Six, you need an official Thursday night PLUSA send-off. When are you leaving?

Bodhi, it's art.

Arkady: Nice, I walked down that street Wednesday. The area reminds me of some of non-brownstone Brooklyn with tree-lined streets and small houses.

IJ: Hope you can make it!

Benson: Enjoy your vacation!

Posted by: sixyearsandcounting at August 21, 2009 4:45 PM

Yes six, all the best. Will you occasionally sign in???

Dave, ROFL on your Open House comment! You riding the train?

Posted by: CarrollGardened at August 21, 2009 4:45 PM

I think you all should call yourselves Asshats on Parade or maybe What's B!tch. No...wait! Take Arkady's quote and go for One Swallow Does Not a Summer Make. No one would ever forget the name of your band then!

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at August 21, 2009 4:46 PM

oh biff beat me to it hahahah

*rob*

Posted by: PitbullNYC at August 21, 2009 4:46 PM

thanks snappy! i'm so happy to not be at work after five today...though if i am getting PLUSAs organized correctly, you recently lost your job? if that's right, i'm sorry! :( i got laid off once too and it totally sucked, until i started collecting unemployment! then it wasn't so bad..when life gives you lemons... :)

Posted by: bodhi_brooklyn at August 21, 2009 4:46 PM

"Mullets for the band!"

Been there, done that. Didn't you see my old band pictures?

Posted by: Biff Champion at August 21, 2009 4:48 PM

Snappy, you will now become the heir to Ferron and will someday perform at our gatherings. I studied an instrument enough to be able to play chords and build playing endurance, so I could write songs. Biff played live all over; my friend and I would just write song after song and play them for ourselves.

Posted by: infinitejester at August 21, 2009 4:48 PM

I'm actually in car going to Philly. My partner was up in NYC for business and he got a car service back to Philly. These big drug companies spend money better than Wall Street nowadays.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at August 21, 2009 4:48 PM

DIBS: Yes, I'll troll on by fairly often. I have a feeling the OT will make good reading to decompress during lunch or at the end of the day!

Posted by: sixyearsandcounting at August 21, 2009 4:48 PM

Isn't Mr. B leaving today, too?

Posted by: Arkady at August 21, 2009 4:49 PM

500 posts suck

Posted by: Biff Champion at August 21, 2009 4:50 PM

Thanks Bodhi...the other upside to unemployment is being able to play PLUSA more often during the day :)

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at August 21, 2009 4:51 PM

*robert*

did you figure out how to "make" your unsub yet?

Posted by: bitter retort at August 21, 2009 4:51 PM

Jester, my goal is to be able to read the sheet music sufficiently so I can play James Taylor songs for myself. That was the only reason I bought the guitar! I'm such a loser! ha

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at August 21, 2009 4:52 PM

Snappy - Go for the 500 mark!

Posted by: Arkady at August 21, 2009 4:52 PM

BTW;

I have no doubt that Shillstoner = Sam. The tip off's:

-writing style;
-as much devoted to the preservation of brownstone interiors as their exteriors. This was one of Sam's hallmarks;
-central AC;
-hate of McMansion-style interiors;
-lives in PS.

benson, I took a similar cruise a coupla years ago. Hope you got an outside room. It's the Caribbean cruises that attract the younger crowd irrespective of line.

Our daughter helped us with luggage to the Cruise Ship Terminal. After checking out the lines, she told us we are now 'certifiably old'. You may be one of the youngest on board. But you can still enjoy it.

You won't be the first lady I've disappointed, Snappy. There's a LOOOOONG trail of them, headed up by my ex-wife and the chick who stalked me years ago. And the PR person whose press conference I blew off when I was a reporter. And that chick who threw crazy signals at me that time but I was too drunk to be eloquent (or responsive). And....well, you get it.

Snappy, I have to be honest with you if our cyber-relationship is to have any semblance of honesty. I hate EVERYTHING about Scooby Doo, even the THEME SONG!

However, I LOVE "Yard Crashers" and I think chocolate is overrated. Friends?

Posted by: wasder at August 21, 2009 5:44 PM

Posted by: wasder at August 21, 2009 5:51 PM

I'm with Mopar, I too love the subway.

Consider the alternative and get back to me.

Hell, I do all my reading on the subway!

Too bad most of you guys didn't see the subway back in the day. Straw seats. Ceiling fans. Incandescent bulbs. Smoking allowed. Stuck doors. You may like the song 'Take the A train' but you might not have dug the train when it was written!

Duke would dig the A train today.

Posted by: denton at August 21, 2009 6:14 PM

Wasder, officially it's 9/1, but I go down there Tuesday to start orientation. My apartment's a mess now!
