okay why is the news and all the papers making such a big deal out of the year 1969? what a dumb year.

Not trying to be 1st but here goes, at least a chance to not get lost in the thread.

Where are all the new Brooklyn people getting jobs?
I realize Brooklyn has been gentryfying for years as well as NYC. I realize there are realy no "new" people as the city is always a destination and will continue to be so. However, after several walks around "BOCOCA", Williamsburg, Greenpoint I can't help but wonder what all these people do. I've lived in NYC my whole life. I've never seen so many "new"people.

If so much RE is NOT selling and if there truly IS a recession, why is it that Brooklyn continues to fill up at such a rapid pace? Where do these folks work?

Its fascinating.

Posted by: Prodigal_Son at August 14, 2009 9:23 AM

rob, its the 40th anniversary of Woodstock. You weren't even born then. You probably don't know what a "flower child" is. :)

they are all creative professionals who work from home and occassionally will sit in coffee shops on their macs "working". duh! :-/

Oh, and anyone looking for a job, the cat clinic on 5th avenue in park slope is looking for someone to work there. it's only 9 bux an hour (which isnt bad for playing with cats i guess) but it says must work weekends. id SO do it if it was JUST weekends but i dont think it is, or if i knew how to handle cats, which i dont.

Cat right early in the morning.

Anyhoo, the Blondie and Pat Benatar concert was a mob scene yesterday. I managed to bump into sixyears but didn't see any of my friends that were there. I stayed through The Donnas and Pat but didn't wait for Blondie since it was getting way late and I was annoyed for all the politicians and councilmen speaking in the breaks between the bands of how we should vote for them bla bla bla. Marty was there too preaching his usual self.

The crowd was full of mid 40s MILFs, wanna be 80s chicks decked out in Cyndi Lauper gear or Willyburg hipsters. Also some 50-60 year old beat up rocker(s) here and there. The Donnas sounded pretty good but no one cared for them or even knew who they were except some 16 year old teeny boppers. Pat sounded worn down, her voice was not what it used to be and they lowered the volume on her mike so you could barely hear her. That's my review.

did pat sing Invincible? that's my fav. song from her!!! from one of my FAV> movies of all time, The Legend of Billie Jean. the part when she shaved her head in the mirror and took control is probably one of american cinema's greatest moments.

*robert*, I hate to admit it, but I love both the song Invincible and The Legend of Billie Jean. Great song. Terrible movie (with a very young Christian Slater) but still love it.

Amzi, are you around? MM? Just wondering if there's any way to push the Bed Stuy tour off a week since I know there are a few PLUSAs who want to go but won't be around, and DIBS won't be at his ghetto house to receive us this weekend. I have a conflict and may not make it back to Brooklyn in time - promised a friend I'd take her 11-year-old son to the Titanic exhibit in Times Square, though a PLUSA who shall remain nameless suggested I take him to Bed Stuy instead!

Posted by: Return of Randolph at August 14, 2009 9:57 AM

Alternatively, are there plans to repeat the Bed Sty tour? I'll be staying over in Jersey Saturday night and likely won't be back in time to stroll with you all.

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at August 14, 2009 9:57 AM

DIBS,

Per your response to Robert, I know you went to the Concert for Bangladesh. Did you make it to Woodstock? Know folks who did? I was six, so too young to make the trek on my own. My parents considered it, but they thought it was going to be a folk festival. They didn't bother on account of traffic reports. If they had gone, they would have been in for quite a surprise (as would I, as we would have gone as a family).

Anyone else? Cas any b'stoners honestly say they were at Woodstock (assuming you remember). I've only seen the movie, but Sly Stone, Janis, Santana and the Who were my favorites from the film.

"Sunset Park"

Location: 8th Avenue. Mrs. Chan bumps into her friend, Mrs. Lee.

"Hello Mrs. Chan!"
"Mrs. Lee! Long time no see."

"Yes, I was in Hong Kong. We had to make sure little Ping's Hong Kong ID card was renewed."

"Little Ping is getting so big."

"He is very stupid and lazy. He can only read 2,000 Chinese characters."

(Mrs. Chan looks at her with tender pity)

"Oh, I'm so sorry. And he is already four years old!"

"Yes, but when Mr. Lee gets back from Hong Kong, we're going to hire a tutor for Siu Ping."

"So your restaurant business is prosperous?"

"We are lucky. The New York magazine restaurant critic gave us a great review. Also, some website called Brown Stone wrote an article about our cuisine. Now the restaurant is full of white ghosts all the time. Naturally, we raised the prices, and fired our expensive chef. Why bother? Those silly gweilos only order Kung Po chicken."

THL - Just put out your own trot line & you don't have to go anywhere. A piece of rope w/ chunks of eel or fish tied on. Leave it for a while & then gently tow it in. If you get doublers it means they'll peel at the next tide &, voila, soft-shells!

ROFL Wonton!!!

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at August 14, 2009 11:25 AM

THL: omg TOTALLY ewww that Tania chick was horrid. um hello, Lisa has gorgeous hair - jealous biatch!
is it me or does Nene seem sorta nervous for the camera a bit? or she's sorta "over-acting" or something. Something just ain't right
and how dreadful was that party Dwight had? um where were the guests?

Wonton - wow how cool? how are you able to post that?!?!?

Posted by: gemini10 at August 14, 2009 11:26 AM

MM/Amzi - I'm a game time decision. Might have to run out to Long Island on Sunday and won't know until Saturday night. I'll let M4L know via email the morning of if I'll be coming.

Cool, wanna come Arkady? What I do want to do is dig for mussels. Our neighbors have this big piles of rocks on their beach that you can dig next to. Those are a particular favorite with me.

Posted by: TownhouseLady at August 14, 2009 11:31 AM

ok is it weird for me to want football season to start?
I guess I associate it with cooler days and laborious sunday dinners
hahahaha

Wonton - ROFL! that was really funny

WonTon, ha ha ha! Love the brag about Little Ping.

ROFL, WonTon.

It reminded me of the back porch gossip between the housewives at the beginning of "The Wedding Banquet."

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at August 14, 2009 11:36 AM

Nene is doing a caricature of Nene this season.

Tania annoyed me ever since she took Sheree to the shooting range and taught her how to shoot a gun with stilettos on. If that were me (or anyone else who every responisibly handled a firearm I'd have said, Rule One, put on some damn sneakers the gun is going to knock you on your broke leather pant wearing ass. This isn't an episode of Charlies Angels you big phoney.

Posted by: TownhouseLady at August 14, 2009 11:36 AM

Gem - Yes, it's weird. We haven't had a decent summer yet.

Posted by: Arkady at August 14, 2009 11:38 AM

THL - You might find crabs clinging to the rocks, too, just before they peel. Would love to join you! (But will be satisfied if you just bring back a couple of bushels for the PLUSA crab fete.)

THL - yes!!!! you are soooo right about Nene doing Nene! and I agree Tania is a phoney baloney - who wears 5 inch heels to the shooting range with tight leather leggings?!?!?

Arkady - so true!

Posted by: gemini10 at August 14, 2009 11:46 AM

gem - not weird. I also crave the pigskin. Who is your team? I'm wearing a NE polo shirt right now. I'm glad vick is back, how much punishment do they want out of the guy? He's never complained once. Stallworth killed someone with his car, he got 24 days.

Posted by: infinitejester at August 14, 2009 11:48 AM

snappy. i agree with THL, prenatal vitamins are great, esp if you can get the prescription ones. a friend game me some when i was feeling low energy, and they really made a difference. i was NOT a fan of the prenatal vitamins at GNC though.

IJ:
disclaimer - I am a woman who makes the sunday dinner while husband watches the game! I just like the "feel" of NFL football Sundays! hahah

I will always root for the Giants though - always!

Ewww and I hate Michael Vick. Why should HE complain??!?!?!

Posted by: gemini10 at August 14, 2009 11:50 AM

aaaaah, thank you infinitejester. i was wondering what the guys at work were yelling about this and that football players going to prison and killing people versus dogfighting. geezalu, bunch of loonies playing pro football!

@WonTon 11:23 - it's funny cos it's true!

Posted by: the chicken at August 14, 2009 12:03 PM

hi snappy. there should be other ones online maybe? i would guess either drugstore.com or amazon.com (they have tons of reviews). are you taking them for general health or low energy? if it's energy, you may want to take the ones with iron. i avoided the iron ones because they can upset your stomach (they made me really sick til i switched over to the iron-free version)

Posted by: CG_ups at August 14, 2009 12:09 PM

Re Bed Stuy.
Great! See you all on Sunday.
Just to confirm - 3pm, Old Girls' School, Nostrand & Macon. Is that right? Thanks!

Posted by: etson at August 14, 2009 12:11 PM

I would make him a Troy Brown-type guy: WR, kick returner, slot receiver on the goal line. Also a running back in certain short yardage situations. The Steelers have some guy who only comes in when there's gonna be an option play I think...that type of thing.

Posted by: infinitejester at August 14, 2009 12:12 PM

Ladies, don't forget to get enough Omega-3 in your diet, whether from fish, Omega-3 eggs or a supplement.
Very important for women.....helps in lowering the risk of female cancers.

Posted by: Expert Textpert at August 14, 2009 12:19 PM

BWWWAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH, ENY. The G-Men!!!! What a joke. Whenever I hear about the "G-Men" I think of J. Edgar Hoover in a dress.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at August 14, 2009 12:20 PM

Fish is one thing I definitely eat a lot of (no pun intended). I probably have fish 3-4 times a week.

CG, I want vitamins for basic low energy and a general ick feeling I've been having lately.

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at August 14, 2009 12:24 PM

I was hoping Mark Sanchez would make the starting spot, the Jets are so boring to watch and the teams in their division all suck except NE, it's never a good viewing experience. At least the Giants have Dallas and Philly, six fucking games right there.

Posted by: infinitejester at August 14, 2009 12:31 PM

Snappy - Not surprising w/ bad foot & forced idleness, sick kitten, job loss. But if you're tending towards anemia, iron's important for women your age.

Posted by: Arkady at August 14, 2009 12:31 PM

Snappy - have you been able to exercise? i know we're booming hair sisters AND bum-foot sisters. :) i've felt like crap since the foot surgery, mostly because i can't even walk around. i have low energy and overall just feel like poo. i was thinking of trying to hit the pool for some exercise. your metabolism has slowed down because of the bum foot. dunno if maybe swimming or something low impact might be even more helpful than vitamins. trust me, i totally sympathize!

Posted by: CG_ups at August 14, 2009 12:32 PM

Dave, the G-Men will have McMNabb and Vick in dresses by time the season's over. And won't they will look pretty!!

Face it - the Eagles will fail spectacularly (again) in their never-ending quest to actually WIN a championship for the first time since 1962 (that's 47 years, Dave, older even than some of your suits). Andy Reid will be fired, but at least he will then have plenty of time to try (again) to get his sons out of jail and off drugs.

The fact that the Eagles signed a jailbird/dog killer/animal torturer/jerk provides strong evidence as to their level of desperation.

Posted by: East New York at August 14, 2009 12:32 PM

"At least the Giants have Dallas and Philly, six fucking games right there."

Don't forget the Redskins - that makes two more G-Men wins on the way to re-claiming the title.

Posted by: infinitejester at August 14, 2009 12:39 PM

I meant six good games to watch, I'm lukewarm on the Giants, I've picked Philly for the SB this year too.

Posted by: infinitejester at August 14, 2009 12:42 PM

And my math sucks - that's only FOUR games.

Posted by: infinitejester at August 14, 2009 12:44 PM

CG...indeed! I don't swim though...it's a hair thing! Ha! I can walk around a bit, I'm trying to increase my exercise because at this point I feel like I'm not doing my foot (or the rest of my body) any favors by remaining idle. I figured I'd start walking a 1/2 mile or so a day until I can increase my foot strength and hopefully gain some energy through the exercise until I can get back to more substantial walking. I figured vitamins might give me a boost in combo with the walking. Maybe I can hit a pool and just hang on to the sides, keeping only my bottom half under water, and kick my legs for an hour or so. I remember when I had severe back problems the physical therapy/rehab place I went to had an aquatic treadmill. It was awesome because I got to work out without putting any pressure or strain on my back muscles. Maybe hanging on to the side of a pool and kicking my legs will do the same for me without aggravating the foot.

Posted by: gemini10 at August 14, 2009 12:51 PM

Spinach makes you strong to the finish.

Posted by: East New York at August 14, 2009 12:51 PM

snappy, i'm sure that will be great. you can definitely get a good workout doing stuff in the pool without swimming and getting the hair wet :) if you want to get super fancy, they sell these resistance booties that help add a bit of challenge to the underwater running. it's supposed to be a fantastic workout (either with or without the booties). have you seen a doc? are you ok to walk? i got in trouble with my doc for putting some weight on my foot. very depressing, it's so hard to function without ever putting any weight on it. but if you can do a pool workout, that will be great for you! good luck! :)

Posted by: CG_ups at August 14, 2009 12:52 PM

If iron hurts the tummy, then maybe that's why I've felt so yucky in the tummy this week. I've had spinach every day for the last 6 days. I love spinach, but for some reason I've been eating it more than usual (usually only have it 2 or 3 days a week).

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at August 14, 2009 12:53 PM

Insert, don't eat just any old fish (pun intended), but go for the fatty ones (I know you like them thick!), salmon, albacore tuna, mackerel, trout, herring, cod, halibut, sardines, mussels.
Watch the mercury levels though.

Posted by: Expert Textpert at August 14, 2009 12:53 PM

iron can definitely cause stomach upset. and i know this sounds ridiculous, but i saw an episode of one of those doctor shows (i think it was scrubs) where a patient was on an all spinach diet and got sick because of too high a concerntration of some mineral. everything in moderation! :)

Posted by: CG_ups at August 14, 2009 12:58 PM

Thanks CG. The doc last told me to take it easy because I had been moving around quite a bit at work and my foot was swelling really badly several times a day. At the last meetup, I danced (like a damned fool!) and really killed my foot...swelled up like a football. Now, about once or twice a day I'm experiencing wanna-chop-your-foot-off-and-smack-your-momma level pain. I'm gonna have to go back get another prescription for pain pills because Advil just isn't cutting it anymore. I've also got one of those night splints I have to sleep in too give the tendon a good stretch, and the minute I take it off in the morning I'm ready to cry :( I swear, I wanna chop off this foot and just have a wheel stuck on there!

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at August 14, 2009 12:58 PM

Expert...I usually eat salmon (yum!) and lately I've been mixing it up with mahi mahi. (incidentally, Trader Joes sells a pre-seasoned mahi mahi that you can just toss in the oven or in a pan and be stuffing your face with fishy goodness in no time at all - it's delicious...particularly with sauteed spinach!)

guys guys,

football is a show-me sport. strong on paper means jack squat. when vick went down, Atl did great with new young QB. so did baltimore with their new QB. before season starts and a couple of game action to show who's hot, not,.. respect the Champs (steelers) and all others are TBD.

just like the year our G-Men took the trophy, we came out of nowhere.

Posted by: more4less at August 14, 2009 1:05 PM

Kens,

someone wrote a counter argument on that RS attack on Goldman:
http://tinyurl.com/q6no6e

Posted by: more4less at August 14, 2009 1:09 PM

And you pick stinks, IJ. You need to form your own opinions. WATCH some football games, study the teams and figure out who's playing well, who has sufficient team depth, etc. If you're going to rely on a "national sports show" for your picks, you may as well just ask Dave.

Posted by: East New York at August 14, 2009 1:10 PM

Oh, with regard to Goldman and oil from yesterday, which I read late:

I have no doubt that a significant part of the run up in the prices of oil and other commodities was due to an increase in the capital deployed in the commodity markets by financial institutions such as GS. But I do not think it is right to characterize it as a conspiracy by GS. Plenty of others did the same thing (Morgan Stanley most notably) and it was legal & allowable.

Now that I've watched I understand all the minutia that contributes to having a winning team. It's really quite amazing once you start to really watch you begin to appreciate it and get excited by it.

Oh yeah, you MUST watch it in surround sound. I like to feel the base of the engines as they tear around the track.

>Actually my daughter's friend Ping is a girl. Is it the character that means bell or the character that means smelly duckweed?

Posted by: rf at August 14, 2009 1:33 PM<

The "Ping" in my story is named with this character 平, which means "peaceful" or "equal". Most Chinese names in Hong Kong consist of two characters plus the surname, but little kids often get called by a nickname. Often the nicknames are based on their "official" name, with a diminutive added like "Little" "Big" "elder sister" or "Fatty".

So, for instance, our PLUSAs might be called "Little Sister Snappy", "Big Brother Kensington" and "Fatty DIBS".

I just hate the idea of the intrusion :(

Have a good weekend Cargar!

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at August 14, 2009 2:55 PM

You, too, Snappy! Hoping you have better news to report on Hari on Monday.

Posted by: CarrollGardened at August 14, 2009 2:56 PM

Fatty DIBS

Ha!

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at August 14, 2009 2:57 PM

i know snappy. it is gross. if it makes you feel any better, for my last 3 jobs i had to be drug tested, had background checks run AND get fingerprinted (with my prints sitting in some SEC database in Washington D.C.). yeeps. but we gotta work, right? just give it a shot. interviews are like dates, you can hit a dry spell for a bit but once that first one comes along it's like a flood. :)

Posted by: CG_ups at August 14, 2009 3:00 PM

Actually, those nicknames make us sound like a bunch of Hong Kong Triad gangsters!

"The nefarious PLUSA Brownstoners, a Triad mob from Brooklyn, led by the ruthless Fatty Dibs and his lieutenant Little Sister Snappy, is responsible for more than 50 brutal choppings in BedSty, Kensington, Williamsburg and Park Slope....

"Victims have ranged from rival gangsters like "Skinny Butt" Rob, to nameless unfortunate civilians whose only crime, seemingly, was a preference for recessed lighting and exposed brick walls.

Posted by: WonTon at August 14, 2009 3:04 PM

That's a good analogy, CG :)

Alrighty everyone...I'm out. Have a great weekend and if I don't make it to the tour on Sunday, someone snap some photos!

Smooches!

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at August 14, 2009 3:05 PM

Had to go 1 more round with Petebklyn. Couldn't help myself. Now I'm really, really outta here. I earned my "PL" today, since I could've left my office an hour ago!

Posted by: CarrollGardened at August 14, 2009 3:05 PM

ROFL Wonton! Now there's a story in the making!

Ok..I'm really outta here now...Ciao.

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at August 14, 2009 3:06 PM

WonTon....its a long story but my friends in HK used to call me the Wa Wa Fish. There is a fish in the Yangtze or some river that makes a noise. There was this other gweilo that used to hang out in the bar and they called him Wa Wa Fish because he sounded like one but when he left HK they started calling me the Wa Wa Fish. The bar was the Waltzing matilda and has had various names/locations in Kowloon near Nathan Road and the old Holidat Inn

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at August 14, 2009 3:14 PM

DIBS, as long as they dont call you waterfish, you're fine

Posted by: more4less at August 14, 2009 3:17 PM

"Maybe I can hit a pool and just hang on to the sides, keeping only my bottom half under water,"

Snappy, I guess I'll see you down at the deep end of the pool :-)

Don't let the job requirements get you down, they are pretty standard in corporate America today, and required in some industries.

Posted by: denton at August 14, 2009 3:17 PM

etson, what do you think about the role of these fairly new commodity etf's? Just as easy to go short as long in them, but I guess there is a tendency to go long for most small investors.

Posted by: denton at August 14, 2009 3:19 PM

Wa Wa Yu! LOL!

Posted by: WonTon at August 14, 2009 3:20 PM

why all of sudden ETF is getting a bad rep recently? Been seeing recently a bunch of negative headlines regarding ETFs

Posted by: more4less at August 14, 2009 3:24 PM

Well, GLD doesn't actually own much gold for one thing. Some of the commodity ETFs have had curbs put on them because of the amount of trading they represent in the underlying commodity. The stock ETFs are all pretty plain vanilla.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at August 14, 2009 3:28 PM

Dave, now I understand why they called you wa wa yu. Take a look:

Posted by: WonTon at August 14, 2009 3:29 PM

WonTon that was brilliant.

Posted by: infinitejester at August 14, 2009 3:31 PM

Aiiiiiiiyaaaaahhhhhh.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at August 14, 2009 3:34 PM

The headline reads something like: Guizhou police discover giant wa wa yu!

Posted by: WonTon at August 14, 2009 3:36 PM

Undoubtedly they discovered it in a Guizhou gay bar.

Posted by: WonTon at August 14, 2009 3:36 PM

Denton,
Think commodity etf's had a similar but less important effect. To your point, I think that any new sources of capital coming in to a market, whether via etf's or investment banks, will have a tendency to both increase volatility and drive prices higher.
Probably stating the obvious, but oil would not have seen prices in the high $140's and low $30's in the same 12 months were it not for changes in the availability / commitment of capital that were not directly related to oil supply and demand.

"why all of sudden ETF is getting a bad rep recently? Been seeing recently a bunch of negative headlines regarding ETFs"

What DIBS said. Also because some of them have been doing a very bad job of tracking what they are supposed to track.

Posted by: etson at August 14, 2009 3:41 PM

DIBS, I own IAU which seems to own the physical commodity. Not a gold bug, just seems to be a prudent hedge in these times...

Posted by: denton at August 14, 2009 3:43 PM

They just launched a Vietnam market ETF today...VNM, I this really a good idea?????

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at August 14, 2009 3:45 PM

I have no clue which way gold is going. Earlier this week though I sold some gold chains I bought in HK many years ago. These are 24k and you can sell them in Chinatown for about a 10-12% fee....better than the rate you get on coins these days.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at August 14, 2009 3:52 PM

Hey, everyone, enjoy the dog days of summer (and the cat days, too). I will be offline for a while after today. Hoepfully, there will be some more trashy brownstoner rewrites to catch up on when I return. Waiting for a good Red Hook version and perhaps Kens could do a Brighton version.

Good luck with hari, snappy.

Posted by: slopefarm at August 14, 2009 3:53 PM

Denton, just buy a gold bar and put it in your basement safe. it only cost ~400k or so and you can hold it in one hand. of course, that would mean you can't let visitors go down to louge around in the basement

Posted by: more4less at August 14, 2009 3:55 PM

Gee-zus! What kind of frog develops from that giant tadpole?

Posted by: Arkady at August 14, 2009 4:31 PM

m4l, do you know what the sales tax would be? Have to buy it in NH :-)

Posted by: denton at August 14, 2009 4:35 PM

Posted by: dirty_hipster at August 14, 2009 5:23 PM

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at August 14, 2009 5:30 PM

Yeah - thank god!

Have a good one DIBS

Posted by: dirty_hipster at August 14, 2009 5:38 PM

What the hell is that thing in the photo? It looks like the "fish" in one of those cheezy horror movies on SciFi (now SYFY) channel. The one starring Bruce Boxleitner.

Snappy, I hope Hari gets better soon. I'm so sorry to give you a defective, and defacating, cat.

Posted by: Montrose Morris at August 14, 2009 5:41 PM

anybody still around? I just finished taking pictures and writing up my kitchen and bathroom renos and was going to post but it will probably get lost in the forum posts over the weekend.
