My Rob Rant for the day.....

I don't get it. I posted a Forum request for contractors to come in to bid on renovating our lobby and I didn't get one response not even for recommendations, NOT ONE!

Everyone is saying how there is no work and bad economy, yet no one wants to come in and place bids and actually get a nice chunk of dinero in their pocket. I just don't get it.

Does anyone else find it a little suspect that Bill Clinton was allowed to fly on the same airplane with grateful two young asian women after freeing them from captivity?

Posted by: lechacal at August 5, 2009 9:24 AM

Kens, what do you mean? I saw a response.

Posted by: Biff Champion at August 5, 2009 9:27 AM

Lechacal, what does the fact the women were Asian have to do with Bill's lechery?

Posted by: Biff Champion at August 5, 2009 9:29 AM

No. That was the deal. ;)

How out of it am I? I didn't know it had been successful! My heart fills for the families of those two. Now for the three hikers captured in Iran...

Posted by: Nokilissa at August 5, 2009 9:29 AM

Hey all. Anyone know any good resources for exploring alternative careers? Anyone been through the process of a change in the past few years & have any insights?
I have a couple of ideas but need to take a break (pretty burned out) & brainstorm a little. Not left current job yet, but close.

Don't think lobby renovation would be my thing.

Posted by: etson at August 5, 2009 9:29 AM

did anyone read the wall street journal article today about Whole Foods? since they are losing money and people dont want to spend their entire paycheck anymore they are trying different marketing things. one of them is rewarding workers to losing weight and stopping smoking. :-/

personally i think, while, POSSIBLY a noble idea, it sets up a precedent that is very bad.

question: what's the closest beach to park slope? it doesnt have to be clean or anything. i need to dip my footsies in the ocean at least once before summer is over or else i feel like i wasted the entire summer!

Haha nice, Biff. Kensingtonian, our lobby was recently repainted. I'll try to find out who did the work.

Biff - Just the whole white middle aged men going after young asian women thing. It has an extra dose of creepy.

Posted by: lechacal at August 5, 2009 9:31 AM

Biff, good point! I missed it. I think he was falling into a stereotyping trap (In this case the stereotype of the beautiful, desired, young Asian woman)

Posted by: Nokilissa at August 5, 2009 9:32 AM

Rob - I often take kids to Coney Isl. Easy trip.

Posted by: Arkady at August 5, 2009 9:32 AM

etson...I looked at doing the same thing a few years ago. Looked at a bed & breakfast (I don't relish the idea of waking up at 5:00 to start muffin baking) and a few other retail ideas. the fact of the matter is that retail is very, very risky. You have to put in a lot of time and energy and in the end you never make anywhere near the amount of money that you would in the job you are currently in.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at August 5, 2009 9:32 AM

That wasn't me Biff, think it was chicken.

Posted by: etson at August 5, 2009 9:32 AM

Hola all!

Cobble! I sent you another email for a forum post today with a new pic.

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at August 5, 2009 9:33 AM

Etson - What would you like to do? What are you good at doing?

Posted by: Arkady at August 5, 2009 9:33 AM

So Lechacal, you're basically saying that Asian women are easier than other women? Is that it??

(I'm totally kidding by the way and know you didn't mean anything by it...just want to give M4L something exciting to see when he checks in)

Posted by: Biff Champion at August 5, 2009 9:33 AM

etson- why don't you look at idealist.com? I know you're involved with your church and idealist has job listings and a lot of information about careers in not-for-profit. You might find a new field there.

Posted by: bxgrl at August 5, 2009 9:34 AM

Noki, in that case, I could actually argue that Lechacal was paying a compliment to the beauty and desirability of Asian women in implying that they are even more fetching than all other women. See how one can argue two different sides quite easily?

Posted by: Biff Champion at August 5, 2009 9:36 AM

Biff - Just the whole white middle aged men going after young asian women thing. It has an extra dose of creepy.

Posted by: lechacal at August 5, 2009 9:31 AM

I'd have to agree with that. There should never, ever be any cross racial dating. Nor should young Asians ever be interested in older guys. It's just creepy. Actually creepy how prevalent it is :)

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at August 5, 2009 9:37 AM

After Monica, Gennifer, Paula, and maybe Juanita, I'd say Bill Clinton's type certainly isn't young Asian women.

Posted by: sixyearsandcounting at August 5, 2009 9:38 AM

Come on, does no one else think there is something a little creepy about white middle aged guys who go after young asian women (seeking out particularly giggly/submissive ones)? I have always assumed they just can't handle a peer in bed, but whatever.

Posted by: lechacal at August 5, 2009 9:39 AM

Thanks bxgrl and Arkady. That's a good suggestion bxgrl.
Personal interests - history, social policy.
In terms of work - something more 'people-related' than I am in now. I am a good people / process manager. Think I would be good in marketing but have very little related experience.

Posted by: etson at August 5, 2009 9:40 AM

didn't Saraghina close down mysteriously recently for "logistical" reasons?

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at August 5, 2009 9:42 AM

Lechacal, I tried to blow it off, but you might have just dug yourself a deeper whole.

Posted by: Nokilissa at August 5, 2009 9:43 AM

Thanks six. I'll greatly appreciate it. I am sick of this board of directors gig.

Biffy, funny one. I am surprised you weren't mugged in my neighborhood in your monkey suit BTW. Let's hope you can survive Greenwood Heights (really known as Sunset Park to most people who were here 10 years ago - Now waiting to duck while Snappy is throwing goodie bags my way for that comment).

Dave, as Arkady mentioned, Saraghina was featured in the Times which I thought was cool. I didn't find the pizza similar to Luzzo's though.

Etson, I thought about that over and over. I decided to switch industries 3 years ago and couldn't be more happier. I would still love to own a business of my own or do something on the side considering my "full-time" workweek is like 25 hours. You coming to Ellis by any chance? or we talk about it on Sunday if the walking tour is happening.

WTF?!?!? just because clinton rode home on the same plane as the two girls doesn't mean that it turned into some kind of big orgy. i'm sure it wasn't reported as such, so the creepy is in your imagination.

Posted by: CG_ups at August 5, 2009 9:44 AM

"question: what's the closest beach to park slope? "

Brighton Beach or Coney Island, if they haven't been paved over to make way for condos yet. Take the B/Q.

Posted by: northsloperenter at August 5, 2009 9:44 AM

Etson - if you have some ideas of other fields of interest, try attending a networking meetup / party. With so many people unemployed, they seem to have a meetup for everything. Best place to start is probably speaking with people in the same field. If you want to share fields of interest, I'm sure people on the board can help you get started.

Posted by: CG_ups at August 5, 2009 9:45 AM

Thanks Six,
I have thought about it - as you know I was a history major also and though about continuing with academic work for quite a while. How big of an issue is discipline wrt teaching? I think I would be good with older kids.

Yes, dug a nice little hole there. I am not saying that I think that asian women fit that description. What I am saying is that it seems like there are plenty of middle aged white guys out there who have some kind of a fetish about that stereotype and seek it out. Don't confuse that with my thinking anything at all about asian women. Sheesh.

Etson- Good Luck with the search. There isn't much out there these days. Starting over and trying to keep the same standard of living is a tough feat in this economy.

I've been kicking around the same ideas, may go back to grad school after the wedding is over. I'm just bored with my job. I'm good at it and make enough cash but it doesn't stimulate me and it isn't what I set out to do when I was younger.

Been toying around the idea of opening a wine and tappas bar, but restaurants are SOOOO risky.

Posted by: PitbullNYC at August 5, 2009 9:52 AM

Rob, for just plain sand and water, Coney is closest but not particularly nice in my opinion. If you want a nicer beach and want to try out surfing, Long Beach is quite nice and an easy LIRR ride (drops you right on the beach). The people are a bit better looking in Long Beach I think.

Posted by: goldie at August 5, 2009 9:53 AM

Etson - as for discipline, it really depends what school you're in. Luckily I've never had serious problems. You could check out private and Catholic schools, which generally pay less but have far better working conditions - no absurd bureaucracy, better discipline (i.e. kick the disruptive kids out), and smaller classes.

lechacal,

Yikes, you picked the wrong crowd for this topic. I guess you hadn't noticed that the majority of the group spends an inordinate amount of time discussing their love of all things Asian.

My husband dated a Japanese woman for a while and everyone assumed he fell into the creepy white guy category. Hardly the case, they were both serious pool players and bonded over that. In fact I heard through the grapevine (his sisters) she was quite the opposite of delicate, submissive and giggly.

Posted by: TownhouseLady at August 5, 2009 9:55 AM

Thanks again for all the responses guys. May end up being a small change or a big one but I appreciate the perspective.
Agree with you Adam re restaurants.
I would be willing to go into a less well paid career so would not be looking to keep similar income necessarily. I am blessed with cheap tastes!

really the only beaches ive been to in nyc is coney island. i like it there. i dont mind dirty beaches at all. i do like the beaches in south jersey though. but it's a little more annoying to get down there. i dont have a driver's license or a car and buses from port authority take forever and are pretty expensive.

Rob, you should come out for the Blondie concert next Thursday at Seabreeze park. It's right on the beach pretty much and you can hang with me and DH while you're there. Should be fun times.

Awesome thing about Brighton cafes is that you can get a cold beer on the boardwalk and they'll put it in a coffee cup (same goes for hard liquor as well) so that you don't get bothered by cops (come to think of it, they might only do that for Russians but that still rocks nevertheless).

Etson, upgrade that to a YES and come drink with us. How can you say no to a PLUSA bday bash?

Posted by: Kensingtonian at August 5, 2009 10:00 AM

etson - The Meet Up suggestion is excellent. Even browsing through their categories stimulates ideas about what you might try.

Posted by: Arkady at August 5, 2009 10:00 AM

Rob - if you have the whole day, take the ferry to Sandy Hook in NJ. Lovely boat trip and a great beach. Not sure of the logistics (they can probably be googled easily) but a friend of mine does it fairly often and loves it!

Posted by: CG_ups at August 5, 2009 10:02 AM

Just becoming a teaching ain't that easy... i've looked into it. New York State has some really odd rules about what degrees are "acceptable" for someone to become a teacher. i.e., you must have X to teach Y. While appropriate, of course, to some extent, they seem to be very non-flexible. But I could be wrong. I'd like to be wrong in this case.

Private schools seems to be the option -- though the pay is crap, so I have to wait until I find my sugar mama before I become a teacher.

DIBS - Can you fill me in on the Butternut Market story? Thanks.

Posted by: etson at August 5, 2009 10:04 AM

etson,

I think a lot of people have been feeling similarly.I was actually discussing this with a bunch of my friends a few weeks ago. Concesus (amongst a group of wine swilling women) was that the economy having people feeling trapped in their current situation. Everyone is scared that they can't make any moves right now. So even if normally they'd be content in their current situation the feeling of not being able to move has everyone feeling shifty and unsettled. Does that make sense? Now sure if I'm explaining it properly. I'm not trying to imply that situation applies to you.

Anyhoo, I wish you the best and hope you find satisfaction in whatever you do now or next.

Posted by: TownhouseLady at August 5, 2009 10:04 AM

there's only one beach for me: Riis Park, If you walk far enough away from the main kiosk you get the odd person fishing, running their dog, nude bathing, smoking weed -- in other words, it's very laid back, uncrowded and generally unmonitored. But you really do kind of need a car to get there...

etson- NYC needs teachers. You would be great at it.

Posted by: bxgrl at August 5, 2009 9:54 AM

Bxgrl, I think the genius of the Teaching Fellows program is that it attracts lots of ambitious young people with the promise of a career with benefits and a master's degree at reduced cost. I've heard it's eliminated the perennial shortage in teachers, but I could be wrong. The problem is that its target population is the population most likely to get frustrated and move on to other careers. But never mind, there are more ambitious young people out there to fill the pipeline. What NYC needs to do is *retain* the best of its young teachers. In this, the DOE fails miserably. Since I started teaching in 2000, my department of 25 has seen 42 teachers come and go - and I'm at a very good school!

Posted by: sixyearsandcounting at August 5, 2009 10:07 AM

Thanks THL! It makes perfect sense. I am blessed in that I would not need income immediately (I have no dependants and some savings) but feel like I need to get a more defined plan before I go ahead.

Posted by: etson at August 5, 2009 10:07 AM

All I know is Mrs. C is far from giggly OR submissive when I'm around!

DIBS, to your point, should we suggest to Mr. B that he includes in the login profiles a space to state one's sexual preference, including any fetishes? If he implements this, you might need a few extra pages added to your profile.

Posted by: Biff Champion at August 5, 2009 10:10 AM

you know what really irks my buttons? unemployment statistics. they claim unemployment is almost at 10 percent. hello, that is such baloney. id wager a guess that the REAL unemployment rate for adults (non senior citizens) in the nyc area is about 30-40 percent. and don't give me the whole "oh it's that percent for people who can work" or "want to work". some people are just plain LAZY. and some people just have tons of MONEY that they dont have to work. so stop with the 10 percent and just say it's 40-50 percent because that is what is real.

Posted by: PitbullNYC at August 5, 2009 10:12 AM

Tybur6, if you have a master's in teaching X, you'll be more or less automatically certified, so it doesn't matter if your undergrad degree was in Y. I majored in Religious Studies. Of course some stupid bureaucrat in the then-Board of Education tried to tell me I wasn't qualified - "Um, this is a SECULAR institution, we don't teach about RELIGION" were her exact words - but the state overruled her. There are also a few exams to pass, but they're really easy. The correct answer is never d) kick the student in the nuts. You also have to attend a two hour Violence Prevention Seminar. I don't remember ever doing this, but a friend did it at Brooklyn College and the prof lectured for the entire time about how masculinity causes violence.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at August 5, 2009 10:17 AM

6years- my brother in law has been teaching for many years- you guys could swap some stories, I bet! A few years ago my sister went into teaching but the combination of work and having to go back to school to get a math masters was just too much. I was relieved when she quit going for her degree because she was totally exhausted and getting sick. They put her under so much pressure- I don't know how she stood it for 6+ years. And she loved teaching- got no support form the Brd of Ed. This is a woman who graduated summa cum lauda from Fordham and who wrote an advanced computer program for a senior class that the university took over because it was so useful.

And I think a lot of middle-aged or older people would go teach if conditions were better and they got better support.

Posted by: bxgrl at August 5, 2009 10:17 AM

Rob, concert is at 7:30 I think. Let's discuss tomorrow with DH.

Chicken, it is an easy job but the co-op requires insurance just so if something happens to the workers while working in the building, they have insurance to cover them. Just a safety precaution to avoid any possibilities.

Posted by: Kensingtonian at August 5, 2009 10:21 AM

Anyone watch Family Guy? When Rob posted...

"you know what really irks my buttons?"

Made me think of when Peter did that news segment "What Really Grinds My Gears".

Love that show.

Posted by: TownhouseLady at August 5, 2009 10:21 AM

Bxgrl - That story sounds all too typical. There should also be a way for outstanding teachers to work reduced hours later in their careers or after they're technically retired. Quite a few would love coming back to teach one or two classes for part of the year, rather than the full courseload. Of course the union would prevent any idea that threatens the status quo.

Rob - that happens to some teachers. Not me - I take my frustration out on the bureaucracy!

Posted by: Arkady at August 5, 2009 10:27 AM

definitely more power to you if you are a teacher, it's a great noble professional, and someone has to do it! i wouldnt be able to handle it because it's like there are two types of kids in nyc. violent and uneducated kids on welfare with terrible parents and snotty priveleged annoying brats with terrible parents.

personally i dont think schools are necessary anymore, it's very last millenium. kids should just learn on the computer at home or whereever they choose. we'd save a TOOOOOOOOON of money in taxes that way, and kids would be smarter than they are now.

Ok...back to work for me...chat with you all later :)

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at August 5, 2009 10:33 AM

Etson, let me throw in a different viewpoint (not that I don't agree with the other suggestions but rather just another viewpt). if the job is not pissing you off big time and/or giving you health issues (ie ulcers, high blood pressure,...), suck it up for 2-3 yrs so you can pad the savings so that if you choose to switch careers, $$$ would be much less of a concern. You're still young enough to push the career change decision back 2-3 yrs.

don't know if Bubba Clinton received any "gratutious affection" from the 2 Asian women, but I'm pretty sure good old bubba got something something while in N. Korea. To believe bubba going into big candy store and NOT come away with some treats is hard to believe

Posted by: more4less at August 5, 2009 10:36 AM

Etson, may I suggest that you find someone to "knock up" cause a mini-Etson will make you forget about career change stuff

Posted by: more4less at August 5, 2009 10:38 AM

Rob, we could do away with schools, or at least make it optional. Even if a lot of people are doing distance learning, someone still has to "teach" those courses. There are a lot of kids who actually like school, usually because it's where they see friends and so on.

Of course schools will never go away - parents these days are too afraid to let kids do much of anything unsupervised, and entrenched political interests are too powerful. The educational system has become more and more centralized over the last 20 years (long before NCLB) and will crush most innovative reforms.

M4L, can one find "gratutious affection" in North Korea? Isn't it pretty straight laced and restrictive there? I thought South Korea would be much more of a "candy store".

Posted by: Biff Champion at August 5, 2009 10:45 AM

i agree eton. i LOVED school. i had perfect attendance every grade except for 1/2 a day in 8th grade and 1 day in 12th grade :( (i hated my home environment with a passion) so school made me happy. so yeah you do have a good point. sadly tho, school for a lot of parents is just free babysitting.

Posted by: PitbullNYC at August 5, 2009 10:45 AM

etson, M4L is right on one part. Sometimes it's not the career, it can be just boredom. I know your situation a bit from what you told me and I can tell you a funny story that put the icing on the cake that made me switch industries. The story involves office promiscuity so a few others might be interested in that story as well (not going to mention names or point fingers). If you come tomorrow, remind me to tell you the story.

Biffy, I gotta show you another picture of someone you will surely approve and this time you wont be telling me that I am an idiot :o). Let's just say I didn't kick this one out of bed for eating ______(insert famous kazakhi/mongolian dish here).

Truer words never spoken. My first and second year teaching were full of nights like that. There were days when I came home at 4:00 pm, fell asleep to take a "nap" and woke up at midnight with lessons to prepare.

This summer, of course, is a different story!

For the past 3 years it's pretty much heaven on earth career wise.

Posted by: more4less at August 5, 2009 11:02 AM

hey etson,

at various times in my life, feeling burned out or restless, I've:

taken on a huge reading load to rearrange my head
gone to therapy
indulged in vices to take my mind off stuff
adopted a "I'll give my job the second-best effort of the day" mindset
took a lot of time off
persisted in my rut until I got fired

Soe,times it's a thing where you go away from it for a while, and you fall in love with things all over again. Other times it's more you just have this nascent part of you doing something else, and that just takes you over bit by bit.

My advice if you're really bummed: consulting OR going to school whilst working in a service job like bartending or waitering (interacting with and serving people at work makes me feel pretty fulfilled, believe it or not)

Posted by: infinitejester at August 5, 2009 11:03 AM

"indulged in vices to take my mind off stuff"

Jester, you must have some good stories here...

Posted by: sixyearsandcounting at August 5, 2009 11:06 AM

Either I'm later than usual, or it's shaping up to be a 500+ post day.

Etson, I've been considering alternative careers for years, but I haven't yet figured out that "one thing" that I really want to do and that will really make me happy (due credit to Jack Palance in City Slickers). I've considered most everything people have suggested: B&B, teaching, retail . . . starting a porn website (looks like I might be able to sign up rob and DIBS). Meanwhile, I opted for a "small change", as you put it, from private practice to in-house, and though I'm still trying to figure out what I want to do when I grow up, the small change has made a huge difference. But, I'm still looking for that "one thing" . . .

Noki, I posted this in the Forum Thread, but in case you don't go back there...

Yes, let's discuss tomorrow DIBS, because I've had the exact same thoughts. There are definitely underserved groups out there, and no lack of money to be made in online porn!

-In process, probably.

CGar and DIBS, I actually have a little different idea for gay dating world that is a rip off from the hetero dating world that I think is underserved in the gay community that can bring in a reasonable profit, if worked out.

I thought there are loads of websites for gay dating. My friend is on like 3 or 4 of them and meets guys online all the time. I know one of them is AOL and another one is a popular one like Match.com or Eharmony or one of those.

Kens, have you been holding out on us? I have to double check with Snark, but I believe there's still room on the Gay Ark. And clearly Biff is right about needing new check boxes on the profile.

Posted by: CarrollGardened at August 5, 2009 11:23 AM

There are loads of them. However, compared to the one that I bring up, most of the sites are poorly constructed, not that user friendly and just don't compare.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at August 5, 2009 11:24 AM

The richness of the site I'm talking about is in its ability to direct you to people very near you for "hookups." You can search the world using many diffferent features: physical features, age, preferences, proximity, with or without a pic, etc, etc, etc. The subscription fee is only $50 per year.

You can enter your travel plans, etc.

i can search, for example, a guy in Budapest between the ages of 35-40, by height, eight, sexual prefernces, etc, etc, etc.

It is a very well constructed site, has NO advertising and now has just under 200,000 members of which I estimate anywhere between 35-50% pay the full $50 and I think that numbe may be conservative.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at August 5, 2009 11:30 AM

dibs, would it be a gay dating site for non ho-bags and skanks? cuz that is the only thing i think is missing really.

You can state in your profile what you like/dislike.

No segue (other than eye candy perhaps), but had a nice walk over the Brooklyn Bridge last night. Spike Lee sighting on a bench on the Brooklyn side - he and his crew appeared to be filming surreptitiously - but still too early to spot the jumper. And not to reopen the Whole Foods debate, but if anyone is looking for good organic food, I had a great dinner at Siggy's on Henry Street, dogs welcome (ironically, across from 75 Henry, that anti-dog monstrosity).

I just took a sledgehammer to your lavaliere, CGed :-)

Posted by: bxgrl at August 5, 2009 1:49 PM

Ken's, aren't you supposed to be saving those compliments for Herk's friend? Or was that faithful who's bringing a friend? I'm so confused. Herk, are you on the market?

Posted by: Biff Champion at August 5, 2009 1:50 PM

well I'm not exactly wimpy but it wasn't one of those huge sidewalk grates either and I'd really wedged that heel down in there... Ruined my shoe! Did I mention that it was embarrassing?

Posted by: herkimermaid at August 5, 2009 1:52 PM

Biff, it's Faithful who is bringing the SINGLE LATINA. Plus I suspect the boyz are hoping JB brings her 3 single roommates too

Posted by: more4less at August 5, 2009 1:53 PM

OK, tourgoers, an update. My buddy Amzi can't do this Sunday, something came up that is taking him out of town this weekend. We can do one of 2 things - postpone till next Sunday, or do a Crown Heights North tour this Sunday, anyway, without the hunky and exhuberant Mr. Hill. You'll just have l'il ol' MM to lead you around.

Think about it, and let me know. We could then do Bed Stuy on another Sunday. I'm game if everyone else is, or I can wait. It's up to the touring public.

Posted by: Montrose Morris at August 5, 2009 1:53 PM

My plus 1 tomorrow is going to be a body guard! :)

Posted by: herkimermaid at August 5, 2009 1:59 PM

Has anybody checked out the help in the ROTD for me???

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at August 5, 2009 2:01 PM

Ack! This is getting outta control! If you did not let me know before that you were coming tomorrow, speak now (or by 5pm!) or forever hold your peace! I also need to know if you are bringing a friend. If we go over 30 folks I need to update the folks at Ellis and prepare a few more goodie bags. 5pm is your deadline ladies and gents!

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at August 5, 2009 2:02 PM

Snaps - You should ask for r.s.v.p. on Forum post as well.

Posted by: Arkady at August 5, 2009 2:04 PM

Just a warning: I might get insanely retarded tomorrow night.

Posted by: dirty_hipster at August 5, 2009 2:04 PM

Montrose,
I am still up for CHN on Sunday. Thanks!

Snappy,
I upgraded to maybe for tomorrow night (which probably means yes for a while when it comes to the crunch) . Sorry to be a bit flaky. Don't worry about a goodie bag - I shall admire them from afar if I make it.

Just a warning: I might get insanely retarded tomorrow night.

Posted by: dirty_hipster at August 5, 2009 2:04 PM

In that case, me and DH will be doing a rendition of Hero by Enrique Inglesias tomorrow. This is not to be missed. Of course, I would have to be plastered as well.

Posted by: Kensingtonian at August 5, 2009 2:11 PM

MM, since this Sun no good for me, Bed Stuy tour next Sun is perfect

Posted by: more4less at August 5, 2009 2:11 PM

No goodie bag for me :(

Posted by: the chicken at August 5, 2009 2:11 PM

Etson, I already had you on my 'yes' list! You simply must show up! And, I've got a goodie bag for you so no need to admire from afar :)

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at August 5, 2009 2:11 PM

Snappy, why don't you just give goody bags to those who have confirmed? Don't discourage lurkers, but don't drive yourself crazy either.

Posted by: Biff Champion at August 5, 2009 2:12 PM

No gay speed dating. No "bricks and mortar" old economy business model. Internet only. I haven't picked up a guy in a gay bar in many years. Only online.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at August 5, 2009 2:12 PM

Chicken, we'll make you a special 'Welcome Back to This Side of the Pond' goodie bag upon your return :)

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at August 5, 2009 2:12 PM

etson, stop being flaky and just said YES.

MM, I am down for either or. Please keep me updated.

Biffy, the saved compliments were for faithful's latina friend. I can still compliment Herki all I want, even if she is coming with a body guard. I think I am a youngling in her eyes.

M4L, did someone say JB is bringing roommates? I don't think so :o(.

Posted by: Kensingtonian at August 5, 2009 2:13 PM

hmmphf....well goodie bags are so much easier than tiaras!

Posted by: bxgrl at August 5, 2009 2:13 PM

Dave, I am telling you, it may work. May not be your idea of meeting guys but I bet there is a whole market for that.

Posted by: Kensingtonian at August 5, 2009 2:16 PM

Kens, that was my sly way of suggesting to JB that her single roommates are more than welcome to join

Posted by: more4less at August 5, 2009 2:17 PM

Too late Biffy, I passed 'crazy' about 15 miles ago and I'm coming up on 'loony' in another half mile or so :) But I think I am gonna stop....my house and poor cat are already covered in confetti!

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at August 5, 2009 2:19 PM

MM, whatever you decide I'll try to be there for. Have this Sun slotted already but next would probably work too. Either or for me.

Posted by: herkimermaid at August 5, 2009 2:20 PM

good job M4L. I like your sly style.

Snappy, you're so fancy. I thought my arranged gatherings were highly organized when DIBS would bring the nametags and I would bring the marker (except for last time when I forgot and DH came through with the marker).

Do you think we still need nametags at this point? Perhaps we should for any friends and first-timers.

Posted by: Biff Champion at August 5, 2009 2:25 PM

Dave, before I open that, is that safe for work?

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at August 5, 2009 2:26 PM

Name tags are up to you, Biffy. It might be a good idea. But, please, please, please don't add them to my list of things to do! Cobble? You there dear? Favor!!!

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at August 5, 2009 2:27 PM

Yeah, Snappy, pretty much

Biff, I assume I'm bringing the name tags again.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at August 5, 2009 2:27 PM

Posted by: dirty_hipster at August 5, 2009 2:29 PM

Biff, I also loved superheroes as a kid, but nothing beat the Flintstones, and I love the Great Gazoo ("dum dums" courtesy of the late great Harvey Korman). ENY, Hy Fye was a great episode.

bxgrl, still love you even though you trashed my lavaliere.

Posted by: more4less at August 5, 2009 2:32 PM

Maybe listen to DH and ditch the nametags. We know most of each other right now and can probably do without them. Plus, this way we can give CGar and Herk an impromptu "Name That PLUSA" quiz; their last hurdle to attaining full PLUSA status.

Boy, it'd be nice if biff were back organizing these things. :)

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at August 5, 2009 2:36 PM

Snappy, how about giving them buzzers:

Herk: I can name that PLUSA in three guesses

CGar: I can name that PLUSA in ONE guess

Herk: NAME THAT PLUSA!

Posted by: Biff Champion at August 5, 2009 2:37 PM

are CGer and I really the only new PLUSAs?? Everyone else has met?

Posted by: herkimermaid at August 5, 2009 2:37 PM

FYI, I am NOT a hasidic jew, otherwise I would be at 360 Adam Street now buying up all those foreclosures and my house would be worth 3.5 million (will be featured on the last week's biggest sales) and located next to a prominent shul according to PropJoe.

"Biff...I do have a buzzer from the game 'Taboo'!"

Ahhhh, Taboo was the very first porno I ever saw.

Memories...

A bunch of us adolescents were watching it on my friend's couch with his parents throw pillows on top of our crotches. That was in the days before bean bag chairs.

Posted by: Biff Champion at August 5, 2009 2:46 PM

JB hasn't actually moved in with said roommates yet, so I don't think they'll be coming.

I always liked the name tags - they add a certain Star Trek convention-ish cult charm to our gatherings. I forget which gathering it was when some non-PLUSA asked Rob what group we were and he was going to answer that we were a convention of furries.

Posted by: sixyearsandcounting at August 5, 2009 2:49 PM

"Biff...ROFL! I'd never peg you for a fan of that type of porn! Or was it just the excitement of seeing one period?"

Snappy, beggers couldn't be choosers in those days! My friend somehow snagged it from his uncle's collection. Nobody else in our school had even seen one. This was before most people had VCR's! We had to settle for the heavily editted blue movies on CITY TV late night at night. My friend became very popular.

To this day, I still have a soft spot in my heart (and hard spots elsewhere) for Kay Parker and Juliet 'Aunt Peg' Anderson. Ron Jeremy was da man!

Posted by: Biff Champion at August 5, 2009 2:55 PM

I give up.

Yeah Snappy; what does that mean "seeing one period"?

Posted by: Biff Champion at August 5, 2009 2:57 PM

LOL Arkady! I haven't seen any tv news promos lately, but perhaps it's circling the drain of my subconscious!

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at August 5, 2009 2:58 PM

"I always liked the name tags - they add a certain Star Trek convention-ish cult charm to our gatherings."

Yes, and when SNL spoofs our little Brownstoner conventions, Mr. B will show up a la William Shatner and tell us all "get a life, will ya." (And he'll be right.)

I know, Biff, but I thought it was hysterical and didn't want to give it away!

Posted by: CarrollGardened at August 5, 2009 3:31 PM

Me too, Troy. Been a lurker, but a newbie to meeting the PLUSAs.

Posted by: CarrollGardened at August 5, 2009 3:33 PM

Snappy, I'm also more than willing to donate my goody bag to any brave newbie who shows up. I would rather they show than feel bad for not warning you and decide not to attend.

Posted by: Biff Champion at August 5, 2009 3:35 PM

Ok...here's how this will work...lurkers and other first-time meet-up attendees will get dibs on the goodie bags. The rest of you PLUSAs will have to fight it out for the remaining bags (I think I have 28 or so regular goodie bags aside from the special Leo/Virgo bags), but I think everyone will likely still get one.

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at August 5, 2009 3:40 PM

Is the correct spelling "goody" or "goodie?" I also think the term "goody" or "goodie" means different things to different people. What if we don't like what's in our "goody/goodie" bag. Are they exchangeable??

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at August 5, 2009 3:42 PM

DIBS, for what it's worth, Googling "Goody Bag" produced 1,970,000 hits, while Googling "Goodie Bag" produced 1,610,000 hits.

I hope the bags are gender specific as the ones for girls will likely be more popular among this crowd than the ones for the boys.

Posted by: Biff Champion at August 5, 2009 3:47 PM

Dave, you are free to exchange the contents of your bag with your fellow party-goers.

I think the spelling is actually 'goody' but I prefer the 'ie' spelling :) I'm odd like that :)

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at August 5, 2009 3:47 PM

I was wondering about the spelling, too.

In Hong Kong the "goody/ie" bags are red and filled with the one thing that everybody wants.

Posted by: WonTon at August 5, 2009 3:53 PM

Ha! Love it. Total classic with Kay Parker and Ron Jeremy. We actually have this movie at the Townhouse. What can I say, I'm a sucker for nostalgia.

Posted by: TownhouseLady at August 5, 2009 4:16 PM

"CGar, I've always relied on the kindness of strangers."

DIBS, you watch GWTW again this week?

~*~*~*~*~*~

I never thought Squeaky Fromme would be paroled either.

Posted by: CarrollGardened at August 5, 2009 4:18 PM

" We actually have this movie at the Townhouse."

The "Townhouse" is a gay bar on East 58th St. that caters to older gentlemen and those who like them.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at August 5, 2009 4:19 PM

No, CGar but I think i saw some shows on maybe Discovery about the lives of Mitzi Gaynor and a few other long lost starlets.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at August 5, 2009 4:20 PM

Am I the only one who doesn't recall Ron Jeremy being in Taboo...maybe because he's a boy....I tend to ignore those things :)

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at August 5, 2009 4:21 PM

Speaking of porn, I was walking home last night and noticed a Hispanic busboy checking out the same hot white woman I was checking out.

I thought, someone should make a line of pornos with Hispanic immigrant types banging hipster babes.

Posted by: infinitejester at August 5, 2009 4:24 PM

"I thought, someone should make a line of pornos with Hispanic immigrant types banging hipster babes."

Or something like that, DIBS?

Posted by: CarrollGardened at August 5, 2009 4:26 PM

I thought, someone should make a line of pornos with Hispanic immigrant types banging hipster babes.

Posted by: infinitejester at August 5, 2009 4:24 PM

Or maybe banging hedge fund managers. All these story lines have been done already.

You should go in a porn shop someday and look at the thousands of Latino porn titles, gay and straight.

Just don't get caught up in the she-male section, that's really creepy.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at August 5, 2009 4:26 PM

"Am I the only one who doesn't recall Ron Jeremy being in Taboo...maybe because he's a boy....I tend to ignore those things :)"

He's in the group party scene.

Posted by: TownhouseLady at August 5, 2009 4:31 PM

Oh, ok. With all those bare butts in that scene it's hard to tell what belongs to who!

How many of those movies did they make? Was it like 4 of them?

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at August 5, 2009 4:38 PM

THL apparently has a "pornographic memory." :)

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at August 5, 2009 4:39 PM

You sure you don't mean Taboo II? He's also in that, in a group scene.

Can't believe I'm postimg that!

Posted by: infinitejester at August 5, 2009 4:39 PM

the HOTD thread is making me SO ill.

someone actually just said this to me :-/

"Rob: puh-lease yourself. My child IS much more worldly and sophisticated because she grew up in NYC. There's simply no question about it. You would be, too, if you'd had her advantages when you were growing up."

:-/

*rob*

Posted by: PitbullNYC at August 5, 2009 4:41 PM

Not to be a weather nerd again, but I'm working from home today (no A/C, brutal) and according to my weatherbug alert it's already raining. Does anyone in Brooklyn see rain? Meanwhile the heat has made my dog constipated so all the windows would be open anyway (because of wicked wicked dog farts).

Posted by: CG_ups at August 5, 2009 4:41 PM

"Lai See!!!!!

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at August 5, 2009 3:59 PM"

You say that in the wrong intonation and you're declaring to the world that you're about to take a dump!

Posted by: the chicken at August 5, 2009 4:41 PM

No comments for me. I know I said I am in toy biz, BUT not THAT kind of toy biz. Santa will be very mad if I started commenting on the last few posts.

Posted by: Kensingtonian at August 5, 2009 4:43 PM

You're right infinite it is Taboo II.

Posted by: TownhouseLady at August 5, 2009 4:44 PM

CG_ups: No rain here either yet, but I'm only a few blocks away from you!

Posted by: cobblehiller at August 5, 2009 4:46 PM

Snappy according to adult film data base (yes there is such a thing) the series goes up to 19. After 4 you lose Kay Parker and Honey Wilder.

Posted by: TownhouseLady at August 5, 2009 4:50 PM

I don't know if I'm going to die first from heat or dog farts.

Rob - what that person said was totally uncalled for. I just read the thread it has gone completely off the rails. Don't take it personally, some people are just jerks.

Posted by: CG_ups at August 5, 2009 4:50 PM

I slapped back for you Rob

Posted by: the chicken at August 5, 2009 4:53 PM

拉屎!

Ha ha chicken! LOL

Posted by: WonTon at August 5, 2009 4:53 PM

I added something to the HOTD comment about the "sophisticated" child. that kind of talk is soooo "new york" and frankly, rather unsophisticated.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at August 5, 2009 4:54 PM

We should teach dibs how to tell the waiter he wants crab at a restaurant...hee hee....

Posted by: WonTon at August 5, 2009 4:55 PM

I think we should have the next gathering in Maplewood, NJ.

Posted by: Arkady at August 5, 2009 4:55 PM

Won Ton, that's disgusting. Only rob gets to post about all things poo.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at August 5, 2009 4:55 PM

That was my first one!

Posted by: infinitejester at August 5, 2009 4:56 PM

lol thanks. oh no, i definitely wasn't offended, just a little shocked people can say such things with a straight face!

*rob*

Posted by: PitbullNYC at August 5, 2009 5:00 PM

OK, I totally thought it was turning into a pile on in the HOTD thread but to quote Tom in Bridget Jones' Diary when Colin Firth and Hugh Grant start slapfighting "FIGHT! FIGHT!" Don't let me down people.

Posted by: CG_ups at August 5, 2009 5:01 PM

I jumped in an commented there too rob.

Posted by: TownhouseLady at August 5, 2009 5:04 PM

19 of them??? Damn! Talk about overkill.

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at August 5, 2009 5:06 PM

That HOTD thread is insane. I want to slap the crap out of that PS person.

Posted by: cobblehiller at August 5, 2009 5:10 PM

Hey that was chicken talking bad, not me, Dave.

I understood you were talking about red envelopes not shit. But I am used to listening to gwailos try to speak Cantonese.

Posted by: WonTon at August 5, 2009 5:10 PM

Dibs - Gulp...

Posted by: Arkady at August 5, 2009 5:19 PM

chicken's got a fowl mouth, Won Ton

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at August 5, 2009 5:21 PM

Arkady, many months ago, BayRidgeGirl committed blogicide for at least a weak because of a "Swallow" incident.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at August 5, 2009 5:22 PM

a weak week it was without her!!!

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at August 5, 2009 5:22 PM

DIBS, apparently that "swallow" post did her in in the end

Posted by: more4less at August 5, 2009 5:25 PM

OK PLUSAs...thanks to Arkady, we have a theme or at least a slogan for tomorrow night's party

"One Swallow Does Not A Summer Make"

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at August 5, 2009 5:26 PM

I'll bring my kneepads.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at August 5, 2009 5:27 PM

"I don't know if I'm going to die first from heat or dog farts."

CG_Ups, how long are you going to continue blaming it on the dog? :-)

Posted by: Biff Champion at August 5, 2009 5:27 PM

Chicken won't tell you what his name--gai-- means in Cantonese!

Posted by: WonTon at August 5, 2009 5:29 PM

I brought that on myself

Posted by: CG_ups at August 5, 2009 5:30 PM

Biff, our neighbor in Philly has a cat that farts.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at August 5, 2009 5:31 PM

My faux pas re: Ron Jeremy. He didn't "appear" until the sequel. It was many years (and many pornos) ago.

Posted by: Biff Champion at August 5, 2009 5:31 PM

"I brought that on myself"

Brought that on or brought that out?

Posted by: Biff Champion at August 5, 2009 5:32 PM

Just catching up here after actually making it out into the heat for a few hours - eagerly looking forward to the HOTD fight, since the house is in my 'hood! (more or less)

""I thought, someone should make a line of pornos with Hispanic immigrant types banging hipster babes."

You could find the entire cast in Bushwick.

CG ups - no rain here yet. Clouds are hovering. I don't think it's supposed to start until 7 or so.

Posted by: sixyearsandcounting at August 5, 2009 5:32 PM

WonTon...I'm Bloomberging him now

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at August 5, 2009 5:32 PM

All animals fart! People fart! Dogs fart! Cats fart! But as the dog owners can vouch, dog farts are exceptionally deadly. And the furry little bastid is actually aiming his butt at me. Grrrrrr.....

Posted by: CG_ups at August 5, 2009 5:35 PM

Cobblehiller: slap me, slap me!

Posted by: Park Sloper at August 5, 2009 5:36 PM

I've never known a cat to fart - I had one who burped. He was so delicate & elegant except for that.

Posted by: Arkady at August 5, 2009 5:38 PM

I have one that's a toxic farter and one that's an avid burper.

Both of them are females. Go figure.

Posted by: TownhouseLady at August 5, 2009 5:41 PM

Park Sloper, after taking quite the beating today in the HOTD learns that he must be very careful with how he words things. No sooner does he rectify the situation to all those who were arguing with him; he then sticks his head into the OT for even more abuse. :)

Welcome.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at August 5, 2009 5:41 PM

Hey chicken! Speaking of farts, a friend's kid (4 years old) asked if chickens fart eggs. Could we have an answer, please?

Posted by: sixyearsandcounting at August 5, 2009 5:42 PM

Well, it's a poor day that I don't learn something here.

Posted by: Arkady at August 5, 2009 5:42 PM

"Cobblehiller: slap me, slap me!"

Cobble, PS must not know about BH!

Posted by: CarrollGardened at August 5, 2009 5:42 PM

I wasn't all that much of an animal person before the last hour's pet fart discussion. This may have confirmed it forever.

Posted by: etson at August 5, 2009 5:43 PM

If you don't fart, they won't let you out of the hospital.

Posted by: mopar at August 5, 2009 5:43 PM

"Cobblehiller: slap me, slap me!"

Do NOT tempt me PS. Really.

Posted by: cobblehiller at August 5, 2009 5:43 PM

I'm not sure Lechecal will venture back in here anytime soon after this morning.

"Cobblehiller: slap me, slap me!"
I prefer, "whip me, beat me, treat me like cake mix"

Posted by: Biff Champion at August 5, 2009 5:44 PM

CH, would you rather I slap you? That's fine, I like to switch! :-)

Posted by: Park Sloper at August 5, 2009 5:46 PM

"A woman, a dog, a walnut tree...the more you beat them, the better they be."

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at August 5, 2009 5:46 PM

"I've never known a cat to fart - I had one who burped."

Family friends in San Diego adopted a female cat (they named her Bob) but it turned out that Bob farted so much that she had to be kept permanently outside.

Posted by: sixyearsandcounting at August 5, 2009 5:47 PM

"CH, would you rather I slap you? That's fine, I like to switch! :-)"

I'd rather you took your self-satisfied Park Slope a$$ out of here.

But "I rather" a lot of things.

Posted by: cobblehiller at August 5, 2009 5:50 PM

PS- I did respond to you back in the HOTD thread. Was already typing away before I realized you were headed this way.

I'm out, have a good night everyone!

Posted by: TownhouseLady at August 5, 2009 5:50 PM

Dibs - You might prefer this version:
A woman, an asse, and a walnut tree, Bring the more fruit the more beaten they bee.

Posted by: Arkady at August 5, 2009 5:51 PM

"CH, would you rather I slap you? That's fine, I like to switch!"

Posted by: Park Sloper at August 5, 2009 5:46 PM

Do we have a versatile PLUSA BDSM team?

(DIBS, let me know if you think I'll need to define my terms.)

Posted by: CarrollGardened at August 5, 2009 5:52 PM

im pretty sure ive only farted like 2 or 3 times in my entire life. not everyone is vile like that.

*rob*
