Development Watch: 330 Clifton Fugly, As Expected

When we checked in on 330 Clifton Place back in June, there was little reason to think that the two-family structure would turn out to be anything but ugly. And now we have confirmation. At least the eventual residents will have a place to put their archers should an enemy's cavalry decide to attack.

Look at that, a white castle opening soon in BedStuy!

Those crenelations will come in handy once civilization collapses as His Whatness keeps predicting.

"At least the eventual residents will have a place to put their archers should an enemy's cavalry decide to attack."
Aye! The resident militia will muster here to repel the onslaught of the invading asshat forces!

I realize this isn't in a recognized historic district, but is there really no architectural review board in Brooklyn? At very least an aesthetic review board?
Posted by: backinbrooklyn at August 4, 2009 3:01 PM
WHY WHY WHY!?! That is horrendous and shameful!
Posted by: A CrownHeightsLady at August 4, 2009 3:04 PM
any guess as to what room is behind that special octagonal window?
Posted by: bowl of dicks at August 4, 2009 3:15 PM
They did this . . . deliberately? What were they thinking (or taking)?
Posted by: CarrollGardened at August 4, 2009 3:20 PM
This is not an attempt to look like a castle, but an ingenious architectural 'loophole' developed in Columbia University called Fractional Fortification. It allows the builder to meet height codes while only using half the construction material of a full wall for several feet, yielding an improved profit margin.

I'v got 2 pics to send in on some things going on on a block that is calandered...Macon St. bet. Lewis & Marcus garvey...one fugly 4th storey addition in light brown brick and one completely new facade in that really fucking ugly yellow/orange fake stone.
HOW CAN THESE PEOPLE REALLY BE SO STUPID AND INSENSITIVE? I have some good ideas though but you won't want to hear them.
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at August 4, 2009 3:28 PM
There's an actual term for this type of foolishness?! OMG Does anyone have any idea how much this piece of crap is going for?
Posted by: A CrownHeightsLady at August 4, 2009 3:32 PM
Riders of Brownstoner! Tonight we blow up the sewer and sneak into Shelm's Deep!
Posted by: jack slade at August 4, 2009 3:38 PM
Come on! OF COURSE it's supposed to look like a castle! And I, for one, think it looks Awesome!!
Posted by: tybur6 at August 4, 2009 3:49 PM
Oh... DIBS... you can use the eff-word. I was told not to yesterday.
Posted by: tybur6 at August 4, 2009 3:50 PM
I predict that, one hundred years hence, this building will be a beloved landmark.

tybur6....I think it can always be used when it's in support of Mr. B's definiton of what's right and what's wrong with architecture. i usually agree with him.
Sorry if I offended anyone but that yellow fake stone just makes me so angry. These people are really a bunch of morons and their neighbors are whimps for not getting something done the minute it started to go up.

> one hundred years hence, this building will be a beloved landmark
You're probably right. I suggest that we get a head start and begin referring to this place as Dr. Fedderstein's Castle.
Posted by: DitmasSnark at August 4, 2009 3:56 PM
calm down everybody its affordable housing for white castle workers...
Posted by: aj at August 4, 2009 3:57 PM
The architect must be a Monty Python fan. This building has the same appealing fakeness as vintage BBC sets.
Posted by: Maly at August 4, 2009 3:58 PM
Why do we have to wait 100 years? The landmark commission can list this place when they list the Nathan's building. :-)

The octagonal window- for those of you who asked- is for the cannon. All of you chivalrous types get into your chainmail, mount up your steeds and go forth. There's a big sword in the lobby- whosoever pulls it out gets a round table (from Ikea).

Shocking! Not a single (serious) post calling Mr. B an elitist and saying "oh, it's not so bad." Come on, anyone wants to give the builder points for creativity?
Posted by: heck_of_a_job_brownie at August 4, 2009 4:38 PM
maybe the rest of the lego pieces are still in transit.
scary thing is there are probably people involved who looked at the designs with pride. i can only hope for the hood's sake this is cheap construction and will topple soon.

*rob*

He IS an elitist, heckuva. But even I have to admit this is strange. I'm not going to move out of Brooklyn or anything, though.
Posted by: East New York at August 4, 2009 4:56 PM
I think this place is awesome. I hope it comes with a trebuchet for putting out the trash.
Posted by: DitmasSnark at August 4, 2009 4:59 PM
Oh God!!! A garbage Trebuchet would be soooo sweet!!!
Posted by: tybur6 at August 4, 2009 5:12 PM
As long as the trebuchet is multi-directional, I guess it would be a very effective asshat repellant.
Posted by: Maly at August 4, 2009 5:29 PM
i know the developer (personally) and the architect (by reputation), both pretty crappy... however i suspect that this building may look slightly better (or less ugly) once the handrails are in place, giving the parapet a cleaner finish... then again it may not
Posted by: Rising Crane at August 4, 2009 5:33 PM
> i suspect that this building may look slightly better...
... once the drive-thru window is in place.
Posted by: DitmasSnark at August 4, 2009 5:40 PM
rising crane, i appreciate your loyalty, but geez... a railing will never help this disaster. if you know the developer personally you may want to help guide him to another profession.
Posted by: archigoddess at August 4, 2009 7:59 PM
I had a bid in on an apartment in this place, but I'm pulling out due to a severe lack of turrets.
I was promised a damn turret, and these crenellations simply won't suffice. Whether they are railinged or un-railinged.
My archers deserve better.
Posted by: bkrules at August 4, 2009 8:34 PM
Funny, funny thread.
Rob, I was actually going to address my previous post to you, but didn't want to be insulting.
ENY, you're probably right, but I'll look at it as a compliment. I think being an elitist in the sea of ignorance isn's such a bad thing. Prime example: red vs blue.
Posted by: heck_of_a_job_brownie at August 5, 2009 8:39 AM
Go away, you silly English k-nigghet types, eh? Ze architect blows heez nose at you! Ze developaire waves his prrrivate parts at your auntie! Phhhhbbbbt!
Posted by: Brenda from Flatbush at August 5, 2009 10:11 AM
i appreciate your loyalty, but geez...
no loyalty whatsoever, in fact i detest both of them - i just think that a handrail will take away the castle feel, not the crap smell though
