Streetlevel: Der Schwarze Kölner Now Open
After much anticipation and slight delay, Fort Greene's new beer garden opened on Saturday, reported The Local. Der Schwarze Kölner, as it's known, started pouring its 18 beers on Saturday night; the Local reported also noted that bratwurst and German pretzels were available to help absorb the generous servings of beer. For the time being, though, beer garden is a slightly inaccurate description, as the outdoor space is still under construction. Anyone stop by for beer this weekend?

I think this needs to be tested next week!!!!

How is this going to compare to Franklin Park, which has a REALLY LOVELY outdoor space...?

You beat me to it, DIBS! (Though we have been promising DH we'd go to Williamsburg)

all of these new places like this opening are totally destroying the fabric of family-centric neighborhoods.
YAY!

I'm in for testing!
(Frankly I am in for testing most places that serve beer, most of the time. This place does look v.good, though).

As a certified Beer Tester Extrordinaire, I feel the need to volunteer my services for a hands-on trial run.

snappy, you in no position to use "run" in your activities

Alrighty guys. Let's shoot for next Wednesday or Thursday at this place? What day works for whom? I think biffy and myself have emails for most of you.
Posted by: Kensingtonian at August 10, 2009 2:42 PM
The place is PAINFULLY loud inside. Desperately needs some drapes, acoustic ceiling tiles, something.
Posted by: zinka at August 10, 2009 2:45 PM
I wonder what outdoor space they'll have? Doesnt seem to be much space unless its a few tables out on the street?
Posted by: kjp216 at August 10, 2009 2:46 PM
Kens, Thurs for me. With Biff not around, you're holding the ball
Posted by: more4less at August 10, 2009 2:47 PM
Kens, you mean 8/19 or 8/20? If so I am around on either night (can't do this coming Wed or Thu).
Posted by: etson at August 10, 2009 2:49 PM
Thursday sounds good.
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at August 10, 2009 2:52 PM
I am shooting for 8/20th then. Biff is back next week (just emailed him to confirm) and seems like it's better for everyone. Maybe they'll have the outdoors open by then. Let's make it an unofficial 8/20th and I'll run it by everyone in the OT again next Monday.
Anyone care to go before and check out the kitchen help for DIBS? :o)

They have beer, but do they have karaoke?
Posted by: CarrollGardened at August 10, 2009 3:07 PM
Yogurt: "Use der Schwarze..."
Posted by: jeffrey at August 10, 2009 3:11 PM
I hope they have some German songs in their karaoke list. "Eine Prozit" anyone???

Oooo, let me know if you all go to the beer garden. Walked by Saturday night and it was packed.
For a Williamsburg bar, (DH would probably approve), you should look into the Abbey.

stopped by TWICE on saturday - first repeat customers
was lovely, but needs some patina and some noise mitigation.

M4L, my running skills are greatly improved with a promise of beer at the finish line :)

The Abbey is the perfect boring bar (which is a good thing)

Well, I guess "old" Brooklyn is gone for good.
When you see post-collegians in summer skirts and yellow t-shirts coifing beers in a Fort Greene beer garden's open plate-glass window, the borough's moved beyond -- even! -- the hipster phase.
It's now in full Hanover/Ann Arbor/Palo Alto mode.
The hipsters are dead. Long live post-collegians.
Until the next "set" comes along. (Which is any day now.)

> coifing beers
I've heard of beers with a head, but never with a coiffure.
How fancy.

am i the only one who thinks it's really ugly? i mean a plywood awning? wtf is that?
Posted by: bklynbpr at August 10, 2009 10:26 PM
Very funny -- the idea of giving a hairstyle to a mug of beer. Believe the correct spelling is quaffing.
Posted by: babs at August 11, 2009 10:17 AM
bklynbpr- agreed. it's horrible looking.
cheap, cheap, cheap and not in any kind of cool way.
