2 Lefferts Place: Nice Brick!

We've been worried about what the facade of 2 Lefferts Place, the new four-story building going up at the corner of St. James Place, because, well, small developers in the area have tended to pick the ugliest brick possible in recent years. So it was with great relief that we noticed the choice of brick that's started to go up at 2 Lefferts in recent days. Nice matte red brick that looks like it could even be old. The close-up photo on the jump shows how it lines up next to the neighboring townhouse. Lintels look good too. Nice job!

Yeah, not bad. But why can't the windows match up vertically to the adjacent brownstone? Are they cramming in an extra story or something.

My neighbors have covered their entire property in various shades of disgusting yellow brick. Yes, not just the house, but the perimeter wall (corner lot), the yard, the porch, planting beds (very small), driveway, back garden, walkway, and anything else they could possibly find to attach a brick or paving stone to!!

While I find it quite ugly, they don't... so it's not that big of a deal to me. HOWEVER, i honestly do find the thoroughness of coverage disturbingly complete. And I still hear the diamond saw almost every weekend and I can't imagine where those bricks are going.... maybe they've started in the inside of the house... brick walls, brick flooring, brick kitchen cabinets, brick entertainment center...

It doesn't really take much effort or more money to do a nice job like this instead of a crappy one. I will send in a pic later this week of a facade veneer job with those ugly yellow/orange fake rocks that is going up on Macon St. between Lewis & Marcus garvey

Wow, I need new contacts.

I thought the BLUE was the brick (I know, it's grey concrete,but it is a beautiful blue on my monitor)...and thought what a wonderful color, better than the drab crap that everything is built with.

Nice job. It's refreshing to see a new property that looks similiar to the other's on the block. Now lets hope the developer doesn't ruin it with a cheap oversized gate...I hate those!

Hand-laid brick or pre-laid panels? If panels, we'll soon see some gross cracks filled with rubber goo, which will ruin the effect.

Bxgrl and I passed this the other day, and commented on how nice it was to see real terra cotta bricks that are contextural with their neighbors. Glad others noticed. Maybe more renovators will take notice, too. From what I could see, they were using real individual bricks, not a pre-laid panel.

they are real individual bricks, with a dark gray mortor and bluestone window sills and lintels (sp?). Looks good so far.
