StreetLevel: Cleaners, Threading Joint Replace Argyle Office

threading%20and%20cleaners%205th%20ave.JPG
The 5th Avenue storefront that used to be a sales office for the Argyle condo now has two new businesses: a dry cleaner and an eyebrow threading salon. According to a suspiciously fawning review on Yelp, the threading biz is the first of its kind in the Slope.

I wonder how the prices compare with the countless Eyebrow Threading shops in Bed Stuy on Fulton St.

The review is actually pretty negative, unless I'm missing something.

Eyebrow threading? Well, at least it wasn't another nail salon. Or sushi joint for that matter.

I just had to look up what eyebrow threading is. In case you're curious:

**
Threading is an ancient method of hair removal which originated in parts of India, the Middle and Far East, and is now gaining popularity in Western countries.

Threading is a hair removal technique that uses 100% cotton thread. The cotton thread is twisted and rolled along the surface of the skin entwining the hairs in the thread, which are then lifted quickly from the follicle. It is more precise than waxing and allows for better lines.

The technique is rather inexpensive because it does not require costly chemical ingredients. Messy waxes and creams are avoided altogether. For women who would like to pursue a more natural beauty regimen, hair threading is a good choice, since it does not use harmful products.

As opposed to waxing, the top layers of skin are not peeled or traumatized in the process making threading gentler on the skin. Threading is highly recommended and an excellent option for those who use Retin-A, Accutane, or similar products.

Eyebrow threading is a practice of shaping the eyebrows. Eyebrow threading is a preferred hair removal technique for a number of reasons. Unlike tweezing or plucking, eyebrow threading removes one clean line of hair all at once, making it much quicker and easier to shape the brows. It is important to find an aesthetician who is experienced at eyebrow threading. Inexperience can result in uneven brows, hair breakage, ingrown hairs, or unnecessary pain.

does anyone know what store is coming in the former Zuzu's Petals spot on berkeley and 7th ave? theyve been doing something inside for a while

(reminds me of the tom waits song "whats he building in there?")

Posted by: goldie at July 2, 2009 2:20 PM

Thanks for the explanation 11217. The eybrow threading place on Flatbush and Midwood in PLG closed before I ever figured out what it was.

Goldie,

It's funny you mention that, because I was just curious about that also and was trying to do some research on it. The only thing I came up with was this....that space is 158A Berkeley Place and this came up for 158...

Then when I googled that studio, it's this:

http://www.lillianheard.com/

But perhaps 158 is somewhere else above where Zuzu's was and I'm totally off. I live very close to there, so I'll take a pic if I see it become anything.

rob...i was just looking on the radar map, it'll be over in about 30 minutes

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at July 2, 2009 2:43 PM

I'm not really sure where that 14K figure started out, Dave. Do you? Most 7th Avenue storefronts are more like 6-8K and down on 5th, they are more like 4-6K a month.

A lot for sure, but not 14K.

11217, i recall you living up the street from me. oddly, i think i may have run into you , but not sure. i'll be walking by that store tonight when i park, and will pop my head in to ask what's coming.

Posted by: goldie at July 2, 2009 2:46 PM

I heard it on here quite awhile ago. I remember doing an analysis of how many they'd have to sell to take care of salaries for 3 people, utilities and the rent. I assumed the gross margin on the ingredients itself was 75%. The shop had to sell thousands a day.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at July 2, 2009 2:52 PM

I don't think it's true, Dave.

I look at rents for commercial properties quite regularly, and I've never seen anything on 7th even approaching that number, unless it's an absolutely ginormous space.

I know that the new Turkish place that just opened up on 7th is paying 7500 and it's bigger than the Yogurt place.

I know this will come as a shock to you, but not everything on this blog is true. ;))

> not everything on this blog is true.

My beliefs now lie in tiny shards around my feet.

does anyone know where exactly on 5th this is? Thanks

Posted by: wineandcheese at July 2, 2009 4:23 PM

I think it's 5th between 2nd and 3rd.

Don't quote me, but I think...

Posted by: 11217 at July 2, 2009 4:35 PM

Pretty sure it is between 1st and 2nd.

The place does not look like the picture taken above its way nicer. Any way I have been there three times, there not just a eyebrow threading place, its a full service salon and prices seem to be cheap compared to most salons in PS.
