StreetLevel: Abilene Folks Opening a Bar on 3rd Avenue
A bar is slated to open next spring in a former karate school space on 3rd Avenue between 13th an 14th streets. The biz is a spin-off of Abilene, the Carroll Gardens bar on Court Street, according to Ideal Properties Group, which brokered the deal. GMAP

I love it ... even in a recession CG is merging with PS thru Gowanus.
Lots going on ... Bell House, galleries, etc.

I'm telling you...Gowanus is going to be a really cool place in a few years. The changes just in the last 2 have been stunning.
As more and more of the Williamsburg crowd seem to be moving south to Prospect Heights, Crown Heights, Boreum Hill, etc, this area of Gowanus is going to attract a lot more of the music venue, bars, gallery type things...
Posted by: 11217 at July 21, 2009 2:12 PM
the meetup last wednesday at the dress barn was right on that block no?

Agreed, but I fear once the economy picks up, it's going to get dumboed into douchedom.

Yeah - Draft Barn is close to here, which is fantastic.
3rd Ave is great - has a really cool vibe. Dare I say better than 4th Ave?
Posted by: dirty_hipster at July 21, 2009 2:17 PM
3rd is definitely better than 4th I think.
I love wandering around down there.
Posted by: 11217 at July 21, 2009 2:20 PM
yeah i never really went to third avanue until last week. i like it. but i like the aesthetics in general of 4th avenue much better. it has a very city-in-jersey like boulevard feel to it.

Posted by: PitbullNYC at July 21, 2009 2:20 PM
and 5th avenue just makes me wretch. i avoid it at all costs.

Posted by: PitbullNYC at July 21, 2009 2:21 PM
I'm not gunna lie....I enjoy 5th. Not everything of course, but a walk from 5th and Flatbush to 5th and 20th Streets really gives you a nice sense of Brooklyn through the years. It's like a walk back in time the farther south you go.
And some of my favorite stores are in the north part of 5th.
Posted by: 11217 at July 21, 2009 2:24 PM
Rob - what do you like about 4th? Nothing buy heavy/loud car traffic, very low foot traffic,a large taxi place, Mcdonalds, and ugly new construction.
Posted by: troll at July 21, 2009 2:25 PM
i like the giant openness of it. i like the urban detritus, the litter, the construction, etc. diff'rent strokes, diff'rent folks. i like the inside of my apartment clean as a whistle, but when i walk outside i want to walk into urban decay.

oh yeah and 40 ounces are only 2.50 on 4th avenue and newports are still under 10 bux. woot!

> I'm not gunna lie....I enjoy 5th.
Same here. I must have worn a groove into the sidewalks with all the times I walked up and down it over the past five years.
Posted by: DitmasSnark at July 21, 2009 2:35 PM
"oh yeah and 40 ounces are only 2.50 "
2.50 is still way too much for a 40 anywhere!
Posted by: dirty_hipster at July 21, 2009 2:35 PM
why do you guys like it so much?
it's soo desolate and not a tree on that whole avenue I think
I have to respectfully disagree 11217. I agree a few places have popped up in recent years, I don't think it will turn into a hot spot like WillyB(actually I don't want to see that anyway) - I live near there as you know and whenever I drive through it it doesn't ring "cool" to me.
I could be sooo wrong. Are you saying that you expect to see more bars/cafes/restaurants/shops to open on the 3rd avenue stretch?
Posted by: gemini10 at July 21, 2009 2:36 PM
Ditto, Snark.
I know that stretch so incredibly well, I could practically tell you what's on almost every block.

where pray-tell do you find 40's for less than 2.50 anywhere in the city? even in jersey in the late 90s in the ghetto i was paying 3-350 for a 40 ounce.
also i do technically like 5th maybe after 10th street or so. not a big fan of the named streets on 5th. the shops just come across as superfluous and phoney to me. how many homemade 10 dollar baby birthday cards does one need!? im looking at YOU skardey kat! (btw their new spaces is absurdly too large for their stock) i think they were better situated in the tinier store across from where they are now, where it actually was quaint and looked like people were in it. tho ive seen people in the newer bigger store it just looks oddly empty.

4th Ave is going to be great in 3+ years by geography!!!!
1 block from established 5th Ave and 1 block from upcoming 3rd Ave. Booya

" Are you saying that you expect to see more bars/cafes/restaurants/shops to open on the 3rd avenue stretch? "
I do - although I have no idea what rents are like over there. The industrial buildings give owners much more flexibility with what they can do - Draft barn, for example, could never work in the smallish storefronts on 5th.
Posted by: dirty_hipster at July 21, 2009 2:44 PM
I don't think it will turn into another Willyburg, Gemini, but as you might gather, I don't really love Williamsburg.
Gowanus will never have all the condos that they have in Williamsburg, and I don't think it will ever have the high end retail/dining that Williamsburg has either, but I'm hoping it turns into something a little more organic, friendly and funky.
I don't necessarily think you will drive through it and say "now THIS is cool" but it has and will continue to have a lot of little hidden gems for those of us in the neighborhoods nearby to discover and enjoy.
And yes, I do think more restaurants and bars are going to be opening on 4th and 3rd. Despite the fact that we all make fun of the condos on 4th, they are being sold and rented and that's THOUSANDS of new people down there eventually.

> more bars/cafes/restaurants/shops to open on the 3rd avenue stretch?
It would shock me if it *didn't* happen.
Shout out to Bar Tano on 3rd @ 9th. Great brunch spot.

Rob,
I was in scaredy kat over the weekend picking up a gift for a kids bday party i had to go to, and it saved my life. they have THE BEST selection of stuff for kids in there. The old cramped store made me want to go postal, and this new layout is SO much better.
I'm guessing they got a good deal on the rent and probably got a larger space for about as much as they were paying before.

"but I'm hoping it turns into something a little more organic, friendly and funky."
I'm surprised there hasn't been any performance venues that have opened up down in Gowanus. WillyB has been in limbo since Luna closed, Galapagos moved and Knitting Factory decided they weren't moving there.
Posted by: dirty_hipster at July 21, 2009 2:53 PM
11217 are you making fun of me b/c I have a car?!?!?
hahaha
Ok I get your points. I think I am snobby b/c I like trees!
I will have to check out Draft Barn and Bar Tano!
I do go to Bella Marias - that pizza joint on 3rd and 3rd - does that count?
Posted by: gemini10 at July 21, 2009 2:54 PM
I rent a practice space for my band on 9th and 2nd ave and its nice to have more options around.
Posted by: Santa at July 21, 2009 2:55 PM
DH - there are.
The Bell House is SUPER fun.
There is BKLYN Yard on Carroll Street
Issue Project Room on 3rd Street.
And the people from Save the Robots were supposed to be opening a place also.
Posted by: 11217 at July 21, 2009 2:58 PM
11217, yeah that's one of the few stores ive shopped in for some small gifts for people. i just didnt understand the explosion of space, but im sure it must make sense for them. i havent been to the new larger beacon's closet yet tho. im just not ready for new clothes. i seem to find enough free clothes people leave out on stoops all the time to last me a lifetime :)

Posted by: PitbullNYC at July 21, 2009 2:59 PM
granted those free stoop clothes probably make me look like a lesbian hobo, but it's free. hey!

There's also this new Brooklyn Crossroads Supper Club place that seems to be trying to get off the ground. Brownstoner highlighted it a while back...

I love free stoop clothes too, Rob.
But my new favorite place is called ODD TWIN on Lincoln and 5th. They have some really great mens vintage clothes for pretty cheap.
Posted by: 11217 at July 21, 2009 3:05 PM
cool 11217 - will have to check those out.
Posted by: dirty_hipster at July 21, 2009 3:15 PM
i wonder how being a superfund site would impact the development of gowanus...wasn't there a discussion on here about that recently..?
Posted by: bodhi_brooklyn at July 21, 2009 3:17 PM
I like some of the new places on 3rd Ave, but I hope gentrification doesn't put the Mexico Tire Shop out of business. Those guys are the best.
Posted by: slopefarm at July 21, 2009 3:29 PM
there are tire shops on 4th ave still so im sure the ones on 3rd are fine.
Posted by: Santa at July 21, 2009 3:51 PM
I worry about the tire shop on Fulton, what with the beer garden and bookstore moving in. Yes, I am serious.
Fourth Ave will never get all that fancy because it's a highway. 3rd and 2nd, such as they are, if the massive brownfield issues ever get resolved, may get more of those cute out-of-the-way places that Brooklyn is known and loved for... but, even so, not that much.
